At the annual meeting in January, 1898, the Society voted to publish an alphabetical list of its members, under the direction of the Committee on the Rolls of Membership. After mature considera- tion I have decided to adopt an arrangement similar to that of the lists published in the annual proceedings for 1877, and to which John Ward Dean, A.M. devoted much time. It is now five years since the Rolls of Membership were printed, and the changes since have averaged upwards of one hundred each year. We have annually had an accession of about seventy new members, which number will be considerably increased in 1898 by the admission of women. We have annually lost by death nearly forty members, by resignations eleven, by forfeitures for non- payment of dues three. The proceedings give the names of the new members from year to year, and also contain a very complete and carefully prepared necrology. An alphabetical list of the resignations from January 1, 1893, to February 1, 1898, has been recorded by vote of the Council in its records for March, 1898. Few names have been added to the Honorary and Corresponding Rolls in recent years, there being no limitation in the present by-laws as to the place of residence of persons desiring to become Resident members. The policy of electing as Honorary and Corresponding members only those whose contributions to historical or genealogical knowledge are thought to entitle them to special recognition, has been strictly adhered to by the Society. To the lists of members will be added such additions and cor- rections of the Rolls published in 1892, and which contained the 4 N. E. HISTORIC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. names of all who had ever been members of our Society, from 1844 to the close of 1891, as have come to the knowledge of the com- mittee. The'Rolls which were issued early in 1893, of the then present members of the Society, were practically reprints of the Rolls of 1892, with the names of those omitted who were no longer connected with the Society, and with the addition of the names of the new members for 1892, and were therefore necessarily chrono- logical, and were without an index. The Rolls of Membership published in 1892 have an elaborate preface containing much infor- mation relative to the subject. In view of the fact that we have had no complete alphabetical lists since 1877, the desirability of them is obvious. The date preceding a name is that of the year of the member's election. In the case of a Life Member two dates are given, the first being that of the year when the life membership began, and the second, in parenthesis, that of entrance into the Society. Where a membership had ceased and has subsequently been renewed by election, the later date only will appear. The titles " Honorable " and " Esquire " are omitted, as are also military and naval titles, except in the case of an officer of the regular Army or Navy. Villages and post-offices are not recognized unless within the municipal limits of Boston. It is earnestly requested that all errors be reported. CORRECTIONS OF THE ROLLS OF MEMBERSHIP. It seems advisable to note the folloAving corrections of the chro- nological "Rolls of Membership," 1844—1891, which were pub- lished by the Society in the spring of 1892 : On page XI. of the list of officers tlie terms of service, as a director, of Almou Danforth Hodges, should read 1^!5!»-G1, 1862-78. On page 11 of the Rolls (Rev.) A.M. should be appended to the name of .Tohn Stetson Barry. Tlie second name on page o-t should read Samuel Clarke Clarke, and not Samuel Curtis Clarke. Page 47. William Fletcher Weld died 12 December, 1881, and not 30 November, 1881, as stated in the Rolls, and in the Proceedings for 1882, p. 29, correction made by his son, William Gordon Weld, who wrote the memoir of William Fletcher Weld for the Register. See vol. 45, p. 117. Page 48. Enoch Redington Mudge died 1 October, 1881. See Regis- ter, vol. 36, p. 90. Page 69. George Sheffield, LL.B., died 30 October, 1884, and not 30 December, 1884, as stated in the Rolls and in the Register, vol. 40, p. 416. Page 71. For .Tames William Clarke, A.M., Dorchester, read James Wilson Clark. Jr., New York, N. Y. Page 74. Rev. William Sweetser Hey wood now writes his middle name Sweetzer. Page 93. Charles Turelldied 26 May, 1863 ; see Memorial Biographies, Vol. v. Page 94. The Committee on the Rolls has for years regarded the Rev. George Edward Day, D.D., now Professor Emeritus in Yale College, as legal- ly a corresponding member. He was a resident of New England when elected in 1847, and his name, in the opinion of the committee, should not have been included in the list of corresponding members whose member- ships were terminated 30 November, 1869, because of change of residence. There was no limitation as to place of residence until 3 October, 1855, and our bydaws have never been retro-active. 34 N. E. HISTORIC GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY. In 1888 a by-law, since repealed, was enacted, which provided that a resident member removing from New England should cease to be a mem- ber of the Society, but the Council unanimously decided that this limitation could not apply to any member elected prior to the adoption of the by-law. This conclusion was in accordance with the principles of law. and was the only logical and consistent decision possible. Page 06. The residence of the Rev. Richard Manning Chipman, A.B.. was Athol, Mass., at the time of liis election. Page 99. Camillus Kidder died IG .January, 1883. There is no record of the termination of bis membership by resignation or otherwise prior to his decease. Paoe 110.
