The first pupil spells pegged, the second pegging, the third pegger, the fourth then spells peg. % When the teacher pronounces ship, the first word to spell is ship- ped, second shipping, third shipper, fourth ship. Hence it appears that when the teacher pronounces one word four words are to be spelled by the pupils.
