From Irene Ambers (now Mrs. Billingsley) "It affords me great pleasure to recommend your System of Shorthand. It is not only very simple, but also very easy to transcribe." From Adeline Bakley "I am so much pleased with your Improved Shorthand, that I am anxious to help push it ahead and gain for it the position it should have — foremost amqng the various systems. I wish to congratulate you and also wish you great success for the future, for you most undoubtedly deserve it." From Elsie Brampton "Your Simplified System of Shorthand is the best. I have had most satisfactory success with it. Your method is not only simple, but also inter- esting and thorough, and any person of ordinary intelligence can grasp the principles." From David L. Brown "Without your excellent shorthand I would not have been able to get into the U. S. Coast Guard Service as Chief Yeoman." From Dorothy Drapkin "I am positive that Stein Business College is the BEST, and will do all in my power to make Stein's easy System of Shorthand known to others. I am greatly indebted to it for my progress. Even my employers acknowledge Its superiority." From Eva Driver "I am glad your System is gaining headway. Considering the short time I had before leaving Philadelphia, I do not believe I would have been able to hold a position had I studied any other System." From Esther Friedman "I take great pleasure in advising you that, due to your efforts, I am now holding a position as private secretary and am receiving very good compen- sation for the same. I highly recommend your school to those who desire the education to become thorough stenographers. Your system of personal Instruction greatly aids the student in acquiring the necessary knowledge within a very short space of time." (Note — When Miss Roletter resigned as stenographer in the Secretary's office of THE NORTH AMERICAN, to become Mrs. Lynch, the office chief, after expressing his sorrow at losing her services, remarked: "You and Miss Hayes" [who is now with the First National Bank] "were the BEST stenographers we ever had." This was a great compliment to Stein Busi- ness College, because both are its graduates.) From Evelyn Shelley (now Mrs. Hanna) "Although many other stenographers find their shorthand troublesome to transcribe, I never had trouble with my notes, owing to the great Simplicity of your System." From Fred Vogel "A superior course in Shorthand like yours can not be fully paid for with money. Yours is the BEST system obtainable. I will do my utmost to recom- mend it." From Anna Young "I find, in comparing Stein Shorthand with others, that it is the quickest, easiest, and BEST method ever copyrighted. I feel no hesitancy in recom- mending Stein Business College." ABSTRACTS FROM GRADUATION PAPERS By John Shevland (Night Class) We owe much indeed to the careful teachings and to the extremely pains- taking methods of Mr. Stein. It is therefore with deepest appreciation that I now say to him that we members of this graduating class, each and every one, do now, and shall always, realize how very responsible we are to him for our success. To-night we celebrate the completion of our course in Stein Business Col- lege, covering a period of some months, not entirely free from trials but never- theless happy ones. We have studied faithfully throughout the entire period INDEX 23 (Route) 52nd Street 35s: Parkside to BaltimoreAv(on 49th to Woodland) 70s: Jefferson to BaltimoreAv(on 49th to Woodland) 35n: BaltimoreAv to Parkside (to 45th) 70n: BaltimoreAv to Jefferson (on 54th to Bala) 58th Street 46s: BaltimoreAv to Woodland (2200 south) 46n: Woodland to BaltimoreAv (on 60th. to LansdowneAv) 60th Street 46s: LansdowneAv to BaltimoreAv (on 58th to Woodland) 46n: BaltimoreAv (1200 south) to LansdowneAv (1600 north) ALPHABETICAL INDEX Allegheny avenue: Route 60 Amber street: Routes 5n and 27n Arch street: Routes 9, 33, 44 and 48 Bainbridge street: Route 63e Bala: Route 70 Ball Parks: Shibe Ball Park: Lehigh & 21st street Franklin Field: 33rd & Spruce streets Baltimore avenue: Route 34 Belmont avenue: now called 44th street Belmont Mansion: on Park Trolley Berks street: Routes 3 and 26 Bridesburg, via Orthodox street: Route 75 Bridesburg Arsenal: Routes 15 and 73 Bridge street terminus on Ffd ave: Routes 3, 4 and 5 Catharine street: Route 63w Chelten avenue: Routes 49, 52 and 75 Chester City: Routes 37 and 76 Chester City to Media: Route 77 Chester avenue: Routes 13 and 62 Chestnut Hill: Route 23 Chestnut street: Routes 13e, 18e, 36e, 42e and 51e Take Chestnut Street cars to STEIN BUSINESS COLLEGE City Line on York Road: Routes 24, 55 and 65 City Line on Glenside Div: Route 49 City Line on Germantown avenue: Route 23 City Line on 54th street, at Bala: Route 70 24 STEIN BUSINESS COLLEGE ABSTRACTS FROM GRADUATION PAPERS of our instruction because from the outstart we all realized that nothing of consequence is obtained — no goal of importance attained — without conscientious and consistent effort on our part. We have endeavored to lighten the burdens of our patient instructor, and hope that we have in some measure succeeded. Having completed our course fitting us for the business world, and having graduated now from this institution which has so ably cared for us, we are, after all, standing only on the threshold — at the commencement — of another period of our respective lives, beginning a new era for us. We are now to begin our struggles in the business world. We feel that our future, because of the very thorough training that we have received at the hands of our esteemed principal, Mr. Stein, will be very suc- cessful and prosperous. May the happy hours that we spent together, while pursuing our studies, be long remembered. 2 By* Sarah Richman (Day Class) My message to you to-night is to show you the greatness and simplicity of our method of stenography, thereby showing the greatness of its inventor and publisher, Francis J. Stein. I know that you are all heartily in sympathy with me when I say that we have had ample proof to test for ourselves and others the scientific exactness, clearness, and simplicity of our Shorthand, because. Firstly: — Our system of stenography is so wonderfully and scientifically arranged, that the study of it has been made more and more interesting day by day. Secondly: — Our students in a short time read their own shorthand with such ease and exactness as can not be equalled by any other system. Thirdly: — Our students have taken responsible positions, after only five to eight months of study, with excellent results. Fourthly: — The complexity of vowels which is found in the Pitman method has been so completely simplified by Mr. Stein that the new system can be compared with the old, as the light of the sun against that of the moon. It is therefore gratifying for me to say here that our success will be due to Mr. Stein's years of hard labor and untiring effort to develop this new method. My prophecy is, that, in the years to come, STEIN Shorthand will rank above all others. 3 By Victoria Goldberg (Day Class) We expect to go out into the business world now to make our success, and it is to Mr. Stein, our principal, that we owe our knowledge of the thorough System of the wonderful Shorthand which we will use in our work. We are all anxious to commence our work, but still it makes us feel a little sad to leave school, because, after all, school days are happy days. But we must continue to work hard and aim to secure a place worth while in this world and make the most of our lives. 4 By Freda Keller (Day Class) When we first entered, some months ago, we all seemed to see before us, in large letters, the word SUCCESS, and due to our most able principal, Mr. Stein, our dream is now fully realized. We are on the eve of separation — we may enter different lines of busi- ness — but that policy of loyalty, which we acquired while at school, take with you to the business world. With a feeling of pride you will say that you are a graduate of STEIN Business College, wearing a smile of success which will serve as a model for other students, but not forgetting to thank our parents for choosing Stein Business College to mould a business foundation for us. 5 By Marie Vogel {Night Class) We have had many happy evenings together preparing to go into this great business world. But now, thanks to Mr. Stein and his wonderful Shorthand, We are ready to take our stand in ilfe. We may come across many trying hours in our future, but we must persevere and keep on pushing. Many of the great men of this country have started at the bottom, and through continually stead- fasting at their ideals have made our honorable country what it is today. Therefore, dear friends and classmates, never drop out of the race of life, but keep on pushing till you have reached the very height of your ambition. As we leave this school to-night, let us carry this great thought of Perse- verance with us. 6 By Marie Carr (Day Class) This class, as all other graduating classes before, must thank our principal, Mt. Stein, who, I am sure, is very much pleased at the success of this class in securing good positions. It is to him we must look up to in future years, for what he did by passing on to us the knowledge of his Shorthand, which we all think very much of, to help us keep up with the tide of the business world. It depends largely upon the graduates, how much credit he will get for his untiring efforts to teach us the rules of business people. If we remember his instructions, we are sure to succeed in bringing much credit to him in the years to come, and we all hope that Mr. Stein will succeed in making his won- derful Shorthand popular among the different countries of the world.
