My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother : Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck. When thou goest, it shall lead thee; when thou sleep- est, it shall keep thee; and when thou awakest, it shall talk with thee. For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life. Prov. 6, 20-23. The law of the Lord is perfect, converting the soul : the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple. The statutes of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes. The fear of the Lord is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether. More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold : sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb. Moreover by them is thy servant warned : and in keep- ing of them there is great reward. Ps. 19, 7- 11. My son, forget not my law ; but let thine heart keep my commandments : For length of days, and long life, and peace, shall they add to thee. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee : bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart : So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. Prov. 3, 1-4. Prov. 4, 7-9. Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding : For the merchandise of it is better than the merchan- dise of silver, and the gain thereof than fine gold. She is more precious than rubies : and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her. Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her : and happy is every one that retaineth her. Prov. 3, 13, 18. Receive my instruction, and not silver; and knowledge rather than choice gold. For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it. I love them that love me; and those that seek me early shall find me. Riches and honour are with me; yea, durable riches and righteousness. My fruit is better than gold, yea, than fine gold; and my revenue than choice silver. I lead in the way of righteousness, in the midst of the paths of judgment : That I may cause those that love me to inherit sub- tance; and I will fill their treasures. O that thou hadst hearkened to my commandments ! then had thy peace been as a river, and thy righteousness as the waves of the sea. Isa. 48, 17-18. The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. Good understanding giveth favour : but the way of transgressors is hard. Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge : but a fool layeth open his folly. Prov. 13, 14-16. A wicked man hardeneth his face; but as for the up- right, he directeth his way.
