Catalogued by THOMAS L. ELDER, Numismatist Thirty-two East Twenty-third Street, New York City Telephone 5899 Gramercy Registered Cable Address : "Ranfurly, New York' V o^ x V OTIS H. KEAN. INC. , NEW YORK. FOREWORD. It is only in rare instances that numismatists have an opportunity to draw upon such a rich and valuable collection as that of the late James B. Wilson, Esquire. This collection is undoubtedly one of the finest in the country to-day and represents many years work. Mr. Wil- son was a collector of keen discrimination and judgment and with the means and facilities at hand to gratify his appreciation. Not only did he collect American coins, but he appreciated choice foreign pieces as well. His interest in things Oriental led him to gather together some choice examples from the Oriental countries. In the American collection particular stress should be laid upon many pieces which on account of their great rarity and numismatic interest stand apart and above all the others. These include the uncirculated 1802 Half Dime, the finest known specimen; the Proof 1838 O. Half Dol- lar, also the finest known specimen; the Proof 1827 Quarter Dollar; the $5 Bechtler, the "150 Gr. Rutherford County" variety; the $2.50 Templeton Reid; the round $50 Wass Moliter "Slug," and the un- circulated Cents of 1793 and 1804. Mention should also be made of choice early eagles, half eagles and quarter eagles, and of the rare and choice gold proof sets running from 1 863 almost to date. The private gold collection is one of the best that has ever been of- fered. The prize $5 Bechtler specimen above referred to has not been offered for a great many years and this is probably the identical speci- men that was last sold. Mr. Brand, of Chicago, has one of these in his splendid Bechtler collection, besides which there are certainly not over three known. The $2.50 Templeton Reid is another piece seldom offered. Three magnificent slugs, each of high rarity — the round Wass Moliter $50 practically uncirculated, will be appreciated by those who are familiar with the private gold issues. Then there are choice Mor- mon, Oregon Exchange Co., Moffat, Clark, Gruber & Co., U. S. Assay and other issues in large variety. In gold a small but choice lot of foreign and Oriental pieces are included. In the dollars are splendid examples of 1 794, 1 836, (including the "Gobrecht in field" variety), 1838, 1839 (2), 1851, 1858 (2). Besides these are included numerous examples of the early and later dates in perfect condition. There are many half dollars, including many mint-marks, in superb preservation, with two very fine 1 797s and an uncirculated 1815. The quarter dollars run uniformly choice from the early to the later dates. The collection of dimes is also noteworthy and contains some remark- ably fine specimens of 1797, 1798, 1800, 1803 and 1804. It will not be too much to say that in the collection of half dimes are some of the finest specimens ever offered. Uncirculated specimens are offered of 1794, 1795, 1796, 1797, 1800, 1802, 1803 and 1805, several in duplicate. The minor coins are complete in like perfect condition. The collection of patterns, small, but choice, contains very rare "Commercial dollars" and two splendid glittering proof $4 pieces, or "Stellas." Too much cannot be said of the collection of United States cents, because a finer lot has never been offered at auction. The best 1 793 cannot be excelled; it is perfect. In 1 794s there are several uncir- culated, and probably a dozen that are fine to very fine, several of them rare. Mr. Wilson could well be proud of his 1 795 s because he possessed two varieties of the thick planchet type, and two varieties of the thin planchet type; all four pieces are of a light olive color, and all are uncirculated. Choice 1796s, 1797s, 1798s, 1800s, 1801s, 1802s, 1803s, 1805s, 1807s, there are in profusion. The 1799s should not be passed over lightly, the 1 799 over 1 798 specimen being especially interesting, as it is about uncirculated; the perfect date variety is a very fine one also. The superb uncirculated perfect die 1804 cent will be one of the sensations of the sale. Some have pronounced the 1 806 the "best," and a record price for this date may be expected. A number of 1 808s include a particularly choice example of a light color which should bring a high figure. The 1 809 and 1811s are gems of high order. Connoisseurs will be interested in the fine proofs of 1821, 1822 and 1832. The 1824 perfect date, sharp and uncir- culated, is valuable and very rare. All the intervening dates not men- tioned above to 1 85 7 are uncirculated. The examples cited are suggestive and more or less typical of the entire collection which abounds with rare and interesting specimens. The collection, as a whole, is unquestionably one of the highest in quality which has been offered in many years. It is not too much to regard it as a monument to the zeal and discrimination of its late owner who was in truth one of our most successful and patient collectors. THOMAS L. ELDER, 32 East 23rd Street, New York City. ORDER OF SALE. ON OCTOBER 5th, Lots from Nos. 1 to 480 inclusive will be sold. ON OCTOBER 6th, Lots from No. 481 to 1017 inclusive will be sold. The finest specimen known of this great rarity, which has not been offered in any of the recent sales. Was purchased by Mr. Wilson, in Oct., 1884, at a high cost. Excessively rare. So far as can be learned, the last time a specimen of this rare piece was offered for sale was in 1882, when the R. C. Davis collection was sold, and this probably is the identical piece. There are probably only four specimens known, hence the piece is the second rarest half dollar, ranking next to the noted one of 1853, without rays or arrows. Excessively rare. Plate. 347 1838. Unc.
