At an early age he accompanied his parents to London, where he obtained his education, and where the germ of that skill was first awakened and matured to proficiency, whereby he has acquired fame and distinction second only to that of the world-renowned "Herd Laddie." In youth the bent of his genius gravitated to music, which he sedulously cul- tivated, and " In notes of many a winding bout Of linked sweetness long drawn out," he charmed his admirers with his violin, and finally adopt- ing this art as a profession, he was enabled to support him- self by his practice on that instrument. It was not until he had attained maturity that his atten- tion was given to checker playing; but, having once seriously entered into a study of the science, his progress was rapid, In several minor matches, in which he was successful, he estab- lished a reputation, and became recognized as one of the most accomplished players in the metropolis. A match was projected and arranged by J. Barber, an ardent admirer and skilful player of the game, who sup- ported Martins in many of his subsequent contests, and who ultimately had the satisfaction of having his conviction of the talents of his protege rewarded, and his predictions of success verified, by Martins wresting the laurels from the Scottish champions. This match was played by Martins and Harper Colthard, at Xewcastle-on-Tyne, March 19, 1S49, the conditions being the first nine wins, for ^"30 a side. Col- 7 8 BARKER VS. MARTINS. thard won nine to six, and twenty-seven drawn. In the preparation and during the progress of the encounter, Mar- tins was attended by J. MacKerrow, and Colthard by the celebrated player and author, Andrew Anderson. The next match of importance was with Mr. John Mac- Kerrow of Douglas, for £100 a side, and the championship of England and Scotland. It took place on Dec. 21, 1858, at St. Mary's Hall, Glasgow, thirty games, wins and draws to count, and it ended in a tie, each winning one, and twenty- eight drawn. In 1859 he was matched to play Mr. Wyllie for £100 a side and the championship, fifty games, wins and draws to count, which took place at the Crown and Anchor, Edinburgh, commencing on June 14 ; and, after play- ing nearly three weeks, Martins proved the victor, having won four games to Wyllie' s one, with forty-five drawn ; and for the first time the laurels encircled the brow of an English champion. Again he met MacKerrow for £100 a side and the championship, fifty games, wins and draws to count, in St. Mary's Hall, Glasgow. After playing fourteen days, com- mencing on Nov. 28, 1860, Martins confirmed his right to the title of champion, by winning ten games to MacKerrow' s six. In 1863, Aug. 31, he contested another match with Wyllie at the Trades Hall, Glasgow, for £100 a side and the champion- ship, fifty games, wins and draws to count; and, after playing thirteen days, the match resulted in all the games being drawn. In his next contest the tide of fortune turned. In a match commenced in the Trades Hall, Glasgow, Jan. 18, 1S64, and lasting three weeks, for £100 a side and the championship, sixty-two games, wins and draws to count, Wyllie won ten, Martins five, and forty-seven drawn. Again he tried con- clusions with Wyllie, in a contest which took place in Levia- than Hall, Glasgow, commencing on Aug. 5 and ending on Sept. 13, 1867, for £100 and the championship, sixty-two games, wins and draws to count. This match resulted in each player winning seven games, and forty-six drawn, when they mutually agreed to close the match, leaving two games unplayed. To these performances may be added a match played with BARKER VS. MARTINS. 9 the late Albert Brown, of Bristol, which Martins won, and a victory he obtained at the Birmingham checker tourna- ment in 1861. In 1849 Martins assisted in the publication of "Bonn's Handbook of Games." The same year he published the "Match Games of Colthard and Martins," in 1859 the "Mac- Kerrow and Martins Match Games," and in 1864 the " Martins and Wyllie Match Games." Shortly after his match with Wyllie in 1864, he married and settled in Douglas, Lanark- shire County, Scotland, where he still resides. In 1866 he issued a challenge to the checker players of America, but it met with no response. The desire to meet the players on this side of the water was still cherished by Martins, and during the year 1876 he was enabled to gratify it. He arrived in America Aug. 12, 1876, and soon after he is- sued a challenge to any player in the world, "particularly Mr. Wyllie." This defi was accepted by the late Robert D. Yates. The result of the match with Mr. Yates was, Yates three to Martins one, and forty-five drawn. The succeeding fall and winter were spent by Martins in a tour through near- ly all the cities of the West and South-west. This closed Martins' career in this country, and he took his departure for Scotland on June 6, 1877. In the international team match, England vs. Scotland, Martins was elected to play with the Scottish team, and ac- quitted himself most creditably. His last venture with our young American champion, re- sulted in Martins' defeat. Martins has got a gentlemanly demeanor, and urbanity in victory or defeat, that make friends of all who have the good fortune to meet him. 10 BARKER VS. MARTINS.
