PREFACE 
 
 The Songs and Poems comprising this collection, 
 with but two or three exceptions, have been written 
 since the commencement of the present Slaveholder's 
 Rebellion, and many of them were suggested by ex- 
 citing incidents connected with the war for its sup- 
 pression. 
 
 As it has not been the fortune of the author to serve 
 his country as a soldier, he has not written sentiments 
 and songs for the soldier from what he has experienced, 
 except so far as a sympathetic nature and an excited 
 fancy have enabled him to see and feel as the soldier 
 sees and feels, and if he has failed in any instance to 
 express the true sentiments of the soldier, it must be 
 attributed alone to this fact. 
 
 Although some of the Songs and Poems will be 
 specially interesting to the soldier, and others to the 
 members of the soldier's home, it is believed that the 
 citizen and general reader will be interested in all. 
 
 That this offering may go forth to cheer the soldier, 
 and the loyal hearts of every home, and also be the 
 means of inspiring all to labor with renewed zeal to 
 bring the time

THE SOLDIER'S GOOD-NIGHT SONG.

 As we sit by our fire's dim light ; 
 Let us sing of our days of most innocent joys, 
 And banish from mind every thought which destroys 
 
 The peace of the soldier at night. 
 
 Yes, yes, brave boys, let us sing to-night 
 
 Of the days when most happy were we, 
 In the home where fond parents could gladden our sight, 
 And brothers and sisters made time, in its flight. 
 Gaily ring with their laughter and glee. 
 
 Those days to us were most blissful days— 
 
 The happiest days of our life I 
 We spent all the hours in the merriest ways, 
 Our labors were pleasant, and pleasant our plays, 
 
 And our country was free from strife. 
 
 O days of childhood and youth now flown. 
 
 How blest do they seem in review I 
 Though the present a shadow has over them thrown, 
 They seem far the brightest we ever have known. 
 
 For the world and all hearts were then true I 
 
 Yes, oft let us muse on those days, brave boys, 
 As embathed in our life's morning dew, 
 
 For theirs is a freshness time never destroys, 
 
 A freshness and beauty that never cloys, 
 Though oft they are held in review. 
 
And let us muse on the future, too, 
 
 As in hope it is pictured most fair ; 
 And let us take heart trying scenes to go through, 
 Till we finish the work we are missioned to do, 
 Ere the pleasures of home we can share. 
 
 And now let us go to our rest, brave boys,

 Our brother leaves his home.

 Oh I who is not the soldier's friend ? 
 
 Who loves not him who dares to go. 
 His country's honor to defend, 
 
 And battle a rebellious foe ? 
 
 His path is one of trials sore, 
 
 And, such great dangers round it lie, 
 
 He needs of strength a lasting store 
 
 To pass through all the scenes which try. 
 
 Far from his own loved friends and home, 
 And all the social joys they know, 
 
 From place to place he's doomed to roam, 
 And guard against a fearful foe. 
 
 It is the same when light and dark — 
 The same 'neath clear and cloudy skies : 
 
 He is to every foe a mark. 
 
 And danger ever round him lies. 
 
 He starts with every dawn of light, 
 Upon his long day's toil and tramp. 
 
 And often takes his rest at night 
 Upon a bed both cold and damp. 
 
 All hours to him are trying hours ; 
 
 They slowly wear away his life ; 
 For storms and sunshine try his powers, 
 
 As well as march and battle's strife. 
 
 His precious moments may be spent 
 In battle — marching — out on guard, 
 
 Or lonely lying in his tent, 
 But all to him is service hard.

 His country's foemen to subdue,

 MISUNDEESTANDINS. 
 
 Misunderstanding works no good, 
 But works a world of ills : 
 
 It breaks the bonds of brotherhood. 
 And warmest friendship chills. 
 
 It keeps the heart unreconciled 
 
 As long as under ban ; 
 It makes the most unhappy child. 
 
 It makes the jealous man. 
 
 It sows the fruitful seeds of hate, 
 The human heart within ; 
 
 It makes of trifles troubles great, 
 And thus leads man to sin. 
 
 Quite seldom men would disagree

 There are tears for the fallen soldier,

 Sad news has gone home to the loving,

 To freedom restore to each downtrodden slave,

 And to wrest of his power each political scamp

 Truth will work out man's redemption : 
 Let us aid her evermore — 
 Aid her till life's toils are o'er. 
 
 Let us view all things created, 
 And as we're to all related, 
 Let us with most high ambition 
 
 All life's mysteries explore : 
 Let us learn by meditation- 
 Learn by calm investigation — 
 Learn man's highest destination, 
 
 And our faith increase still more : 
 Faith will go beyond our seeing 
 
 When of things we've knowledge more, 
 
 For with knowledge Faith can soar. 
 
 Aid our country, fathers, mothers ;

 Till the light of Truth and Reason 
 
 Bars for aye Oppression's door : 
 Care for more than vain earth-glory 
 Which may written be in story, 
 When this reign of war most gory 
 
 Shall be past forevermore : 
 Care for all that's worth preserving — 
 
 All that's good and nothing more, 
 
 Much or little be the store. 
 
 Yes, toil on, brothers, ever, 
 Labor on with high endeavor, 
 And with light that is divinest 
 This fair land to peace restore :

 Guard our country through all dangers, 
 Guard Guerrilla raiding rangers : — 
 Freedom's foes to truth are strangers 
 Needing light and nothing more — 
 Needing light from Truth's clear fountains — 
 Truth's clear light and nothing more, 
 Pure as from Heaven's radiant shore. 
 
 Oh! look up time-toilers, ever; 
 Upward look with high endeavor, 
 And from Truth's divinest fountains 
 
 Aim to make your soul's whole store : 
 Be your spirits howe'er lowly, 
 Striving with a purpose holy, 
 You can rise though it be slowly. 
 
 And in time to proud heights soar ; 
 Yes, to heights that are divinest. 
 
 With high purpose you can soar 
 
 To be lowered nevermore. 
 
 At each stage of life and season 
 
 Right earth's wrongs with truth and reason, 
 
 And in souls that lack true wisdom 
 
 Light from Truth's clear fountains pour : 
 Let this moral reformation 
 Spread through every clime and nation, 
 To both high and low in station. 
 
 And war's reign will soon be o'er, 
 Swords will be laid down in earnest, 
 
 By mankind the whole world o'er — 
 
 To be lifted — nevermore I

 KEOONOILIATION. 
 
 When we diflfer from another 
 Whom we think to rashly err, 
 
 We shall ever act most wisely 
 Kindly with him to confer. 
 
 Friendly interchange of feeling 
 Fills no human heart with guile, 
 
 But with men of worthy motives 
 It will all hearts reconcile. 
 
 Friendly words can win to^friendship 
 Hearts that are most cold with hate. 
 
 For where threats can never enter, 
 Friendly words can penetrate. 
 
 Threats avail mankind but little ; 
 
 Harsh words grate upon the ear ; 
 Words of sympathy and kindness 
 
 Mortals soonest bend to hear. 
 
 Yes, all words with coldness spoken 
 
 Further set our souls apart, 
 While the words that glow with friendship 
 
 Bring usnearer, heart to heart. 
 
 Then remember, ye who differ, 
 
 Ye whose hearts are jBUed with guile, 
 
 Friendly interchange of feelings 
 Always tends to reconcile.
