 NEW CASTLE, one of the most progressive of the many industrial communities of Western 
 Pennsylvania, lies in a beautiful valley at a point where the Shenango, the Neshannock, and 
 the Mahoning unite to form the Beaver River. The history of New Castle covers' a com- 
 paratively limited period, only about one hundred years, and is the story of a slow and 
 steady development through the usual stages of settlement, village and town, to the importance of a 
 city. In 1884, the city of New Castle had ten thousand inhabitants, and in 1890 but eleven thousand. 
 
 It was about this time that New Castle began to attract general attention as the possibili- 
 ties of the point as a center of production were noticed by manufacturers. During the last 
 fifteen years the growth of the city has been phenomenal from an industrial view-point, and 
 the population has increased to over forty thousand souls. 
 
 Here are located the largest tin-plate mills in the world, some of the immense plants of the 
 United States Steel Company, several window-glass factories, and hundreds of smaller enterprises, 
 which, together with the great brick-yards and limestone quarries, give employment to an army 
 of over ten thousand workmen. 
 
 Capital has concentrated in New Castle because of the abundance of favorable mill sites, the 
 unfailing water supply, the low rate of taxation, and the presence of a class of laboring men 
 who are largely the owners of their own homes. In addition, five trunk lines with uniformly 
 reasonable rates give to the city unequalled transportation facilities which are immensely superior 
 to those of any rival manufacturing points. 
 
 The less material side of New Castle has kept pace with its industrial development. The 
 highest standard of excellence is required in the educational institutions of the city. All 
 denominations are represented by religious edifices, and the pulpits are filled by men who are 
 earnest and eloquent. The moral standards of the community are high. 
 
 The citizens of New Castle are, as a whole, enterprising and successful. In the past they 
 have been and will continue to be potential factors in forwarding the prosperity of their city.

 One of the leading hostelries of New Castle, situated on East Washington Street, at 
 the square. It contains eighty-one rooms, and is thoroughly equipped with every
