A heavily armoured cruiser combining the armament of a battleship with the speed of a cruiser. The latest battle-cruisers attain a speed of 30 knots, carry eight 13"5-inch guns, and are of 28,000 tons displacement. Battleship. Regarded as the best type of warship for a general fleet action. Heavily armoured and gunned, their speed varies from 18 knots in the older types to 25 knots in the latest types. Beam. The breadth of a ship at the " waist " or widest part. Boom, (i) A spar from which torpedo-nets may be hung out. (ii) A system of harbour defence. Bridge. The raised platform for the use of navigating officers. Broadside. The aggregate number of guns which can be brought to bear on one side of a ship. Bulkhead. The instrument used in gunlaying for determining the angle of elevation. Commodore. The title given to the senior ofi&cer in command of a small squadron or flotilla. Complement. The total niunber of officers and men carried on board ship. 9 A SHORT GLOSSARY OF NAVAL TERMS Conning-tower. The armoured observation-chamber of a warship from which the steering or gunfire is controlled. Control Station. The raised platform used by the range-finder and controller of gunfire on certain types of ships. Cruiser. A ship of comparatively high speed used primarily for scouting or protection of trade routes. Davits. Iron cranes or derricks for lowering or raising boats. Displacement. The term denoting the weight of water " displaced " by a ship when afloat. Draught. The depth of water which a ship draws, i.e. the distance in feet from the normal water-line to the keel. Flotilla. The name given to squadrons of light cruisers, destroyers, or submarines. Flotilla-leader. The largest type of T.B.D. Foremast. The mast nearest the bow of a ship. Ounlayer. Specially trained seaman who " lays " and fires the guns. Knot. One sea mile = 2,026| yards. The unit of speed for ships. Laying. A flat-bottomed vessel chiefly used for loading ships with supplies. List, To. The term used to describe the leaning over to one side of a vessel caused by shifted ballast, inrush of water, etc. Log. A mechanical contrivance for registering the speed of a ship. Mainmast. The second mast from the bow of a ship. Mine. A floating or anchored and submerged re- ceptacle for high explosives, which is detonated by contact with the hull of a ship, or by electric contact wires controlled from the shore. Minefield. The area over which mines have been laid or dropped. Mine-layer. A ship fitted for laying mines. Mine-sweeper. A ship fitted with contrivances for dragging a suspected minefield. Mountings. A SHORT GLOSSARY OF NAVAL TERMS Spotter. The look-out man whose duty it is to signal the exact spot on which the projectiles fired from his ship strike the target or enemy vessel. Starboard. The right side of a ship as seen when facing towards the bows. Stokehold. The portion of the hull of a ship containing the furnaces and boilers. Strategy. The term denoting manoeuvres carried out to secure an advantage over the enemy before an engagement. Submarines. Under-water torpedo-boats, of which the latest can run at a speed of 16-20 knots on the sur- face, when they are propelled by gasolene engines, and at a speed of nearly 12 knots when submerged by ncieans of electric motors. They are able to dis- charge torpedoes from tubes placed forward and aft, and the later types mount a disappearing quick-firing gun. Submersion is attained by ad- mitting water into compartments and by lateral planes. The water is ejected by naeans of com- pressed air when it is desirable to come to the surface. Modern submarines may be over 200 feet in length, carry six or seven torpedoes (q.v.), and have a displacement of 600-800 tons. Super-Dreadnought. The nose contains a bursting charge of 200 or 300 lb. of wet gun-cotton which is fired by a de- tonator on striking the target. It has an extreme range of about 7000 yards. The torpedo is pro- pelled by twin screws driven by compressed-air engines, which are automatically started as the torpedo leaves the tube. By means of a gyroscope the course of the torpedo is automatically corrected from any deviation. Torpedo-boat Destroyer (T.B.D.). A small vessel of high speed originally designed for the destruction of torpedo-boats, which they have now practically rendered obsolete. Modem T.B.D.S may be of 750-1100 tons displacement, attain a speed of 29-35 knots, and carry four 4-inch guns and four torpedo-tubes. Trajectory. The curve described by a projectile from the instant it leaves the gun to the moment of impact on the target.
