GENEALOGY OF THE AYRES FAMILY of Fairfield County, Conn. Compiled by James Noyes States, New Haven, Connecticut, 1916. OCT 4 tfiS VERMONT HERALDRY: Pages 121-122. Eyre, Ayres, Avers, Eyers, &c. George Ever of Keveton, County Nottingham, England, came over to New Jersey in 1727 and settled there. He was the Great Grandson of Sir Gervaise Eyre of Newbold, Co. Derby, and Keve- ton, Co. Nottingham, a direct descendant of Baron William Eyre of Hope, Co. Derby, (tempo Henry III.) There is another family of Eyres, whose Founder in America, John Eyre came over in 1718. There is extant, a letter of his, with a seal reproducing the following devises: Arms: "Argent, a chevron, ermine between three escalops Gules." CREST: "A demi-lion, rampant." These arms are attribut- ed by Burke to the Eyres of County Norfolk, a family in no way con- nected with the Ancient fatnilv of Countv Derbw Crest: On a Cap of maintenance, proper, a booted and armed leg, couped at the thigh, quarterly, Argent and Sabre, Spur on. This family name had a curious name as is attested by ancient legend and chronicle. It came from no less a personage than WILLIAM, the Con- queror of England. There was a battle raging, and William had a good many of them in which he took a personal hand himself. In this one some mailed warrior hit him a blow on his helmet and crushed it on his head and gave him great pain. His assailants were driven off and the first of his attendants to reach his side, quickly loosened his helmet, and relieved him of the cruel pressure of iron. William asked his name. "Truelove," was the reply. "Thou shalt be from Truelove called EYER," said William, ' 'for thou hast given me to breathe the pure air of heaven. ' ' Vol. I, Page 1029. The name and its synonyms: Ayres- Ayer-Ayre-Eyre-Eyer-etc, is not uncommon. It is found dating back to the 11th century. The legend concerning its origin is found in Thorp's Catalogue of the Deeds of Bat- tle Abbey. Legend : The first of the family was named Truelove, who was one of the followers of William the Conqueror at the Battle of Hastings (1066). The Duke was flung from- his horse and his helmet was beaten into his face, which "True- love" observing, he pulled it off and horsed him again. Duke William told him, "Thou shalt hereafter instead of Truelove be called Eyre (or Air) because thou hast given me the air I breathe." After the battle the Duke found him severely wounded, his leg and thigh having been struck off. He gave him lands in Derby, and a Coat of Arms — the leg and thigh in Armor cut-off, and an honorary badge yet worn by all the Ayres, Eyres, in England. 2 THE AYRES FAMILY. Arms: Argent on a chevron sable three quarter foils, or, Crest: An Armored leg couped at thigh erect per pole. Motto: Lacte aere Florent. In Vol. X, 1st Series of Notes and Queries, is the fol- lowing taken from Rhodes' Peak, Scenery ', page 244. The Eyres (Ayres) is one of the oldest families in Derbyshire, where they have continued to reside more than seven hun- dred years, as appears from the following curious extract from an old pedigree which is preserved at Hassop, (here follows the preceding matter down to the word Derby when follows) "and the seat he lived at he called 'Hope,' because he had hope in the greatest extremity," &c, &c. See page 1170, Vol. II, for members of the family that have attained distinction. Genealogical Gleanings in England, WATERS, N. H. Pub. Lib. Page 79. The records of Essex County, Mass., have frequent mention of this name under many forms, viz., Ayres, Eyre, Eyres, &c, &c. The ancestor of most of the name in New England, and the earliest one who lived in Essex County was John Ayer. It is supposed that he came from England, and was living in Salisbury, Mass., as 4 THE AYRES FAMILY. early as 1640. He removed to Ipswich in 1646, and in the next year to Haverill, and died there March 31, 1657. His will was made March 12, 1657, and probated Oct. 6th, following. He was survived by his wife Hannah, the mother of his children, who died Oct. 8, 1688, having been a widow for more than thirty years. Cornet John, fourth son of John and Hannah, was born about 1633, perhaps in England, was made a freeman in Haverill about 1666. He was a farmer in that town which he represented in the- General Court in 1683-1685-1689- 1690. Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. II, Page 291, N. H. Pub. Lib. Y Ayres, John, (Flourished 1680-1700) an eminent English penman, was of very humble origin, but date and place of his birth are unknown. Coming up from the country a poor lad he became footman to Mr. Wm. Ashurst, Alder- man of London, then resident at Hornsey, who was knighted in 1689, and Lord Mayor of London in 1693-4. He set up as a teacher of writing and accounts. His income from scholars was nearly 800 pounds, ($4000.00) a year. Pub- lished many Scholastic works, &c, &c. Page 292. Ayres, Philip. (1638-1712) Author of many books. He was born at Cottingham, and educated at Westminster and St. John's College, Oxford. He became tutor in the family of Montague Garrard Drake, of Admon- desham, Bucks, and lived in the family till his death, Dec. 1, 1712. Vol. I, page 56. N. E. H. & G. Reg., says: Richard H. We now come to more recent immi- grants. June 20, 1693, Philip Ayres, mariner made his will, being about going on a voyage, probably in the Ketch Pros- perous, of which he had just bought a quarter, and left his property to the children of his brother, John Ayres, of Jer- sey, and his brother, Thomas A., of the same Island. Upon one of these occasions the Meeting House and nearly every dwelling in the village were burned, {Magazine of American History Vol. Ill, Page 685. Nov. 1889.) It is supposed that the records of the church, preserved in the minister's house, were de- stroyed in this conflagration . Page 66 . The records of the Presbytery however show that in spite of these difficulties the Pastor of the Bedford Church was present at its ses- sions for nine (9) successive years, from 1769 to 1778. Joshua Ambler being an elder yet much of the time lived nearer to Pound Ridge, was advised by the Presbytery to continue where he is. The Early Germans of A T ew Jersey , by T. F. [8] We now come to more recent im- migrants. June 8, 1693. Philip Ayres, mar- iner, made his will being about going on a voy- age, probably in the Ketch Prosperous, of which he had just bought a quarter, and left his property to the children of his brother, John Ayres, of Jersey, and his brother Thomas A., of the same Island. In 1711, James Ayres, late of Kent, England, now of Boston, was ap- pointed adm. to his brother William Ayres, late of the Parish of St. Peters, Co. Kent, who had died on his passage hither. July 7, 1715, James (Ayres,) m Sarah Dispan (a name 52 THE AYRES FAMILY. • called very strange by Savage) and I suppose it was his will which was proved May 4, 1759, being James of Londondery, and names wife, sons William and Samuel, and four daughters. Vol. XV, Page 57. [9] Savage mentions also Henry A., of Portsmouth, R. I., 1655, William of Hart- ford, 1651-9, and Samuel, an apprentice, who came over in 1637. All the rest mentioned in his article seem to be descendants of John of Haverhill, whom we propose to trace hereaf- ter. Page 57. Eyre. In addition to Savage's article on this name, I find the following: John, son of Simon, had five children who d young besides those named, and of these latter, Catherine m David Jeffries, and Bethia m John Wolley, March 18, 1713-4. Page 58. Oct. 12 1696, John Ruggles and his wife, Martha, only child and heir of Richard Moseley, late of Boston deceased, and Maria, his wife, dau. of Simon Eyre, of said Boston, signed a deed of land to their uncle, John Eyre, who was heir to the other half. John E.'s will mentions his neice, Martha, wife of John Ruggles. Simon and Elizabeth Eyre had Eli- zabeth, b Oct. 30, 1690, at Boston. This was Simon, third of the name. Simon Eyre, Sr., seems to have left only 2 sons, Thomas and John, and his son, Simon, who died before him, had only one son, Simon, recorded. Thomas is said to have died s. p. in Viranin. John's only son, John, removed to Portsmouth, though perhaps he had at Boston, Sept. 14, 1733, by wife Anne, a son, John, and. we are at a loss to find the parentage of the man we are record- ing, unless he be the son, Jonathan or Benja- min, two sons of the first Simon, of whom we know very little. Benjamin perhaps d y, but THE AYRES FAMILY. 53 Jonathan was educated for a surgeon, 1656, says Savage. Vol. XV, Page 58. In my last, I noted several Ayres families, not descended from John of Haverhill. I have now to add another. Samuel Ayres, Sr., was of Ipswich, and his will proved March 29, 1697, mentions sons Samuel and Joseph, daughter Mary, and gr. dau. Susana Wait. Of these Sam- uel appears to have died s. p. , as his will of Oct. 30, 1743, mentions wife, Mary, and sister Mary, and leaves all his property to the children of his brother Joseph, of whom Joseph is to have a dou- ble portion . But there was a John Ayres of Ips- wich, who d Nov. 23, 1690, a cordwainer, who appointed his brother Joseph adm. and from the coincidence of names, I presume him to have been another son of Samuel, Sr. But again on Sept. 23, 1683, John Ayres of Ipswich (probab- 54 THE AYRES FAMILY. ly the same man) presented an adm. account of the estate of his son, John of Andover, de- ceased, who seems to have been young and un- married, and who owed debts to his father, and to his brother Zachary. This latter item serves to identify that Zachary Ayres, who is said to have m Eliza Chase at Andover, June 27, 1678. Perhaps John, the father, had also lived at Andover, as we find Samuel, son of John, and Mary Ayres d there Sept. 5, 1670. We find by the Reg., Vol. VII, 78-9, that Samuel, Sr., and John were living at Ipswich in 1678, and I think we may presume that John was the eldest son of Samuel, but who was their son, Samuel, Sr. ? If John were his son we must fix his probable age. If John's son Zachary was m in 1678, his father must have been 40 years old at least, i. e. b 1638, and Samuel, the supposed father of John, would be at least 20 years younger. In that case he could not be the ap- prentice who came here aged 15. Vol. XV, Page 331. Now in all this confusion only a few things seem certain. 1. John of Ipswich, was probably son of Samuel, Sr., for, excepting the latter'sson, we know of no Joseph to whom he could be brother. 2. Samuel, Sr., must in that case have been born as early as 1618, and was not the apprentice, unless the latter's age was incorrectly given or unless Zechariah of Andover was not married so soon . We must leave this part still in doubt , for others interested in the family to investi- gate. We will now proceed to the descendants of John Ayer of Haverhill, whod March 31, 1657. He had children; John, Nathaniel, Obadiah, Rob- ert, Thomas, Peter, Hannah, Rebecca and Mary. Rebecca m John Aslett, or Aislebec (see THE AYRES FAMILY. 55 Reg-., VIII, p 227) Oct. 8, 1648. Of the sons, Nathaniel, I presume, d y as I find no trace of him. Savage has no corresponding person. Obadiah was of Newbury and had son John. Robert was of Haverhill and left large issue, all of whom I trust will be noted in Mr. Chase*s promised history. The county records of Sa- lem have several wills and inventories, es- pecially, I would note, of his sons Samuel and Timothy. Vol. XV, Page 331-332. Thomas m Elizabeth Hutchins April, 1657, and had John b May 4, 1657; Eli- zabeth b Dec. 23, 1659; Mary b March 22, 1661; Love b April 15, 1663; two sons, b in 1664, d same year; Thomas b June 9, 1666, and Samuel b July 11, 1671, d July, 1672. Thomas himself d Nov. 9, 1686. Peter was like the last named, settled at Haverhill, and by wife Hannah Allen, had Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Mary, Samuel, William, Rachel, and Ebenezer. Thus far we have traced, adding much to Savage's account. The eldest son, John m 1st, Sarah Williams, and had a daugh- ter Sarah by her. His second wife was Susan- nah Symonds, but by which wife respectively were his children, I do not know. He removed to Brookfield, was a Captain, and was killed by Indians, Aug. 3, 1675. His family was of course scattered, and we will now try to trace them. In May, 1703, his sons Samuel, John, and Thomas, were appointed adm., and in 1713, Thomas, Joseph, Mark, Edward and Nathan- iel, brothers, claimed the estate. Samuel we know was dead in 1714, as it was then so stated by his son, Edward. John we may presume was also dead, and these seem to have been his oldest sons. In 1714 the heirs were Edward, son of Samuel, John, son of Edward, Abraham, 56 THE AYRES FAMILY. and Thomas, sons of Thomas, Nathaniel, son of Nathaniel, and John, William, and Benja- min, sons of Joseph. We will see where these children were settled after the Brookfield settle- ment was destroyed. Edward, Mark, and Nathaniel, sonsof Capt. John, doubtless settled in New Hampshire, as Savage notes persons of these names as living there in 1685-9. Thom- as went, without doubt, to Newbury and is the one mentioned by Savage, as we can hardly suppose there were two Thomases each hav- ing a son Abraham. Joseph's locality is still unknown. Nathaniel and John perhaps came to Boston, and were the persons men- tioned in Gleanings No. 26, (ante pp 56-7) as the circumstances agree. Viz., Nathaniel having a son of the same name, and John's dying in 1711 without children. The Boston John's birth seems conclusive and he died just before the date of the deed in which his name is omitted from the list of heirs. There remains now only Samuel, when I pre- sume to have settled, like Thomas, at New- bury, and to be the one mentioned by Coffin, who had a son Jabez b there, Dec. 27, 1690; because a Jabez i\yres, the only one I have found yet, settled at Brookfield when it was re- settled, and tradition as given by his grandson, says that he was a descendant of Capt. John. I can hardly conceive of any other person than a descendant returning to the town. I am aware that this record is very incomplete and largely conjectural, but I hope some one may be inter- ested enough to confirm or confute my conclu- sions. Jabez Ayres of Brookfield, by his wife Rebecca, had Stephen b Aug. 3, 1719; Eliphalet b Mar. 4, 1722; William b Feby. 28, 1723-4; Micajah THE AYRES FAMILY. 57 b Sept. 24, 1729; Onesephorus b Apr. 7, 1733; Stephen b Feby. 12, 1735-6; Jabez b Apr. 26, 1737. XII, p 251 ) and d Aug. 22, 1830; leaving one son John, and three daughters Lovice, Mary and Rebecca, of whom Lovice m Charles O. Whitmore of Boston. [Note. It will be noticed that Jabez had a son Stephen, as had also his supposed father, such coincidences strengthen any conjectural pedi- grees.] Vol. XVI, Page 144. Vol. XVII, Page 308. A son b Nov. 1, 1666; d 14th of same month; Samuel b Sept. 13, 1667, d Dec. follow- ing. He moved to Woodbridge, New Jersey, and had there a son b Oct., 1670; a child b April 4, 1674; Thomas b Oct. 3, 1675; Mary b Feby. 16, 1680, d Feby. 23, 1698-9; Sarah b April 13, 1683, d Nov. 8 following; and a daughter b Sept. 7, 1685; I presume two of these unnamed children were Obadiah and Joseph, who with John and Samuel, settled at Woodbridge. Nathaniel Ayer of Haverhill m Tamesin Tur- loar May 10, 1670, and had Hannah b June 2, 1671: Hannah b Dec. 19, 1672; Elizabeth b Aug. 19, 1764; Nathaniel b Nov. 15, 1676; Abiah b Feby. 5, 1578-9; Obadiah b Jan. 30, 1690, d April following; Ruth b Dec. 30, 1680, d April 24, 1682; a child b Sept. 5, 1683, d Sept.; Benjamin b Aug. 9, 1684, d June 17, following; Mary b Sept. 9, 1687; Ruth, again, b May 12, 1689; his wifed Dec. 13, 1700, and he died Nov. 17, 1717. I shall not attempt to trace the marriages and issue of these grandchildren of John Ayer, Sr., though I have them, except in one or two instances. John son of John Ayer died, no doubt, unmar- ried, as on Sept. 23, 1683, his father presented his inventory. (Reg. XV, 331 lines, 11-18.) Zechariah Ayer, another son of John, was alive at Newbury, Oct. 24, 1696. I now proceed to the family whose name was commonly spelt Ayres. I have already shown (Reg. XV, 56) that there was a Moses Ayres 60 THE AYRES FAMILY. of Dorchester, 1687, whose son came to Boston and left issue. There were also at Ipswich, Samuel and John Ayres, living- at the same time, but between whom no relation is known to have existed. Samuel Ayres, Sr., of Ipswich (perhaps the ap- prentice mentioned by Savage) had Samuel b Sept. 14, 1658; John b May 1661, Joseph b Oct. 29, 1664; Mary b June 22, .1667; and Susan, whom Thomas Wait, Nov. 21, 1677. He d Feby. 17, 1696-7, and perhaps he had m a second wife, Mary Johnson of Hampton, Dec. 14, 1681. Of his three sons, John, no doubt, d Nov. 23, 1690, and made his brother, Joseph, his executor. (Reg. XV, 331, line 8.) He was a cordwainer, and I think did not marry. Samuel Ayres of Ipswich m, I suppose, widow Mary Fuller (Pub. June 23, 1721) and had Samuel b Feby. 17, 1722-3, d Dec. following; Lydia b July 31, 1728, dAug. 10, following; Samuel b Oct. 1, 1732, d Nov. 12, following. He d Oct. 21, 1743, aged 87, and left his pro- perty to his brother Joseph's children. The dates and circumstances seem conclusive that this was the son of Samuel, Sr. Joseph Ayres of Ipswich, a tailor, m Margery , and had Mary b Aug. 10, 1694; Sarah b May 6, 1696; Elizabeth b Sept. 21, 1699; Deborah b April 8, 1701; Joseph baptized Nov. 1705. He d March 4, 1730. If these records be properly placed, it would seem that Samuel Ayres left but one grandson, while John Ayer had fourteen, all but one of whom married. I now turn to Capt. John Ayres of Ipswich and Brookfield. I have shown that Savage was wrong in giving him Sarah Williams for a THK AYRKS FAMILY. 61 wife. It has been suggested that he was the John Eyre, grocer, of Norwich, England, aged 40 in 1637, who went to Holland, (Reg. XIV, 327) but this seems highly improbable. I notice in the Historial Collection of the Essex Institute, Vol. 1, 95, that William Lampson of Ipswich died leaving 8 children before March 29, 1659, and his widow Sarah desired to marry one Thomas Hartshorne of Reading, but her brothers William Fellows and John Ayres opposed it, 1661. Now as John Ayres m a Symonds, and we learn of no other daughters of Symonds except those recorded by Savage, it seems probable that this Sarah Lamson was own sister of John Ayres. We learn from deeds at Salem, that John Ayres lived at Ipswich, 1648, and as a tenant on Mr. John Norten's farm. In Nov., 1672, he seems to have sold out all his rights in the town, including those derived from his father in law, Mark Symonds, and he was killed by- Indians x-\ug. 3, 1675. I find on the original inventory by his widow "I have seven sons and one daughter." She died Feby. 8, 1682-3. I suspect that she was related to Samuel Symonds, at least Mrs. Rebecca Symonds, his widow, having the distribution of some char- ity, gave a portion of it in 1682 to Mrs. Ayres. I have already (Reg. XV, 332) shown from deeds the names of these eight children. They were John, Samuel, Thomas, Joseph, Edward, b Feby. 12, 1658; Mark b Dec. 14, 1661; Nathaniel b July 6, 1664. Susannah, the daughter, m a Day and had a son Robert Day of New Roxbury, 1716. John Ayres, I suppose, was of Ipswich, and had by wife Mary, a child bSept., 1677; Abigail b May 14, 1680. Ruth d Dec, 1685. He 62 THE AYRES FAMILY. seems to have had no issue, and I think d at Boston, Aug. 12, 1711, aged 62, but I am not sure that I identify the right man. Samuel Ayres of Newbury m, March 21, 1677, Abigail, daughter of William Fellows, pro- bably his own cousin, by whom he had Mary b Jany. 13, 1677-8; John b March 16, 1678-9; William bjany. 26, 1681-2; Ephraim b Feby. 13, 1686-7; Stephen b March 13, 1689; Jabez b Dec. 27, 1690; Samuel, Joseph, Ebenezer and Edward, these names I add from a deed of Oct. 5, 1717, of the mother and brothers of Stephen, to his widow. [I may here add that Jabez is recorded as the child of Samuel and Sarah Ayres, yet his first wife was Abi- gail, his widow was Abigail, and in 1710 William Fellows in a deed mentions "my brother-in-law Samuel Ayres, who m with my sister," and I think it more probable that the clerk made an error, and that Samuel had three wives, two of the same name, and mar- ried the second so soon after the death of the first. I have given (Reg. XV, 332) the de- scendants of this Jabez.] Thomas Ayres of Newbury m Hannah Errington, Mar. 21, 1677. Thomas b Jan. 25, 1678-9; Hannah b Aug. 2, 1680; Rebecca b May 27, 1682; a daughter b at Ipswich, June, 1686; Abraham b June 18, 1688; Sarah b Aug. 29, 1690; Me- hitable b April 5, 1697. Joseph Ayres of Ipswich m Sarah Caldwell, June 9, 1684, and had Sarah b Aug. 5, 1685; Eli- J zabeth b Jan. 28, 1687, m Aaron Kimball, Feby. 5, 1716-7; John b Feby. 26, 1692-3; William b Sept. 13, 1696; and Benjamin b Dec. 16, 1700. Page 310. I think he m a second wife, widow Hannah Dutch, pub. Apr. 21, 1714. A deed THE AYRES FAMILY. 63 recorded at Worcester, 1741, but dated Jaitv. 14, 1716, is from Thomas, Mark, and Edward Ayres, all of Portsmouth, Nathaniel Ayres, blacksmith of Boston, Samuel of Ipswich, son of Samuel Ayres, deceased, and Robert Day of New Roxbury, whose mother was Susan- nah Ayres, to Joseph Ayres of Ipswich sell- ing all the land at Brookfield, formerly pos- sessed by our honored father, John Ayres. Of Mark and Edward I know only that they were of Portsmouth and Kittery. Nathaniel of Boston I indentified in a previous note (Reg. XV, 56.) I will notice but one or two of these grandsons of Capt. John Ayres, whose names may be confounded with others. We have seen that John Ayer, Jr., went to Ipswich after Capt. John Ayres had removed, this causing one confusion. We now see that Samuel Ayres, Sr., the apprentice, no doubt had sons, Sam- uel and Joseph married at Ipswich, at the same time that Capt. John Ayres two sons of the same names had families. I hope I have kept them distinct, and indentified them by reference to deeds. A third Samuel Ayres, son of Samuel and Abigail (Fellows) and grandson of Capt. John Ayres, m Eliner Ran- dall of Ipswich, June 7, 1715, and had Marth b March 2, 1718; John b Nov. 22, 1719, d Feby. 20, 1720; John b Sept. 17, 1721; Eliza- beth b Oct. 6, 1723, d 9th of same month. His wife d Oct. 31, 1734, and he married Hannah Gold, published Dec. 31, 1737. Jabez Ayres m Rebecca Kimball, Dec. 8, 1718, and lived at Beverly, whence he removed to Brookfield. A deed dated June 2, 1821, shows that she was the daughter of Henry Kimball of Haverhill . The record shows that 64 THE AYRES FAMILY. His wife and son, John, were killed March 15, 1698-9. She was the daughter of Onesiphorus Marsh, who mentions in his will his grand-daughter, Rebecca Kimball, and this explains why she names her child, Onesiphorus Ayres. Onesi- phorus Ayres of Brookfield m Anna Good- ale, 1759. She was the daughter of Solomon Goodale and b June 18, 1740. Fifteen days after Easter, II Charles I. 13 April, 1635.) Final Concord in the King's Court at Westminster between Timothy Oldmanes, alias Pricke, and Mar}' his wife, querents, and Simon Eire, gentle- man, and Dorothy, his wife, deforciants, of two messuages, one stable, two gardens, and one orchard, in Bury St. Ed- munds. Plea of covenant. Simon and Dorothy have acknowledged the aforesaid premises to be the right of Timothy, as those which Timothy and Mary have of the gift of Simon and Dorothy, and they have demised and quitclaimed them from Simon and Dorothy and their heirs to Timothy and Mary and their heirs of Timothy forever. And moreover Simon and Dorothy have granted for them- THE AYRES FAMILY. 83 selves and the heirs of Simon that they will warrant to Timothy and Mary and the heirs of Timothy the afore- said premises against Simon and Dorothy and the heirs of Simon forever. And for this Timothy and Mary gave to Simon and Dorothy £ 80. (Translated from the Latin) [Feet of Fines, Suffolk, II Charles I.] Because of the lack of wills nothing has been learned about the ancestry of Simon Aires, and his wife Susan Vale, par- ents of Simon Aires, or Eyre, who emigrated to New England in 1635; but both were probably descended from families of their respective names that had been resident at Laven- ham, Co. Suffolk, since the middle ages. The following pedigree, therefore, begins with the father of the emigrant. (Page 250.) I. Simon Aires, of Lavenham, Co. Suffolk, born probably about 1557, died after 1637. He married atLavenham, Feby. 7, 1582-3, Susan Vale, who was buried at Laven- ham, Sept. 21, 1637. Children baptized at Lavenham. I. Susan bapt. Oct, 18, 1585, buried at Lavenham, June 20, 1589. II. Simon bapt. June 21, 1588. III. Anna bapt. Apr. 23, 1591. IV. John bapt. Jany. 5, 1593-4, perhaps the man who m at Lavenham, Nov. 13, 1627, Dorothy Huske, and had children who are recorded there. V. Anthony bapt. Oct. 24, 1596, buried at Lavenham, March 2, 1615-6. Simon Aires or Eyre, of Lavenham, and Bury St. Edmunds, Co. Suffolk, and of Watertown, Mass., Surgeon, baptized at Lavenham, June 21, 1588, died in New England in Dec, 1658. He married first, probably about 1616, Dorothy Payne, born about 1598, died in Boston, Mass., Aug. 11, 1650, daughter of William and Agnes (Nves) of Lavenham. (Dorothy Payne was a sister of Elizabeth, wife of William Ham- mond, of Phebe, wife of John Page, and of William Payne, all of whom were early settlers in New England . For Payne, and Page, entries in the Parish registers of 84 THE AYRES FAMILY. Eavenham, Co. Suffolk, vide infira, pp 251-252. The surname "Nves" is probably an incorrect spelling of Neves, or Neve.) At some time after the birth of their first child they removed from Eavenham, probably to Bury St. Edmunds, where on April 13, 1635. They sold two houses, a stable, two gardens, and an orchard. Two days later, with their eight children, they sailed for New England in the ship "increase," and settled, on their arrival, in Massachusetts, at Watertown. Simon Eyre married secondly about 1651, Martha (Hubbard) Whittingham, born in England about 1612, died July 13, 1687, daughter of William, and widow of John. He was freeman April 17, 1637; representative in 1641: selectman 1636-43; and Town Clerk in 1641-5. He was admitted to the church, April 17,1647, and soon afterwards he removed to Boston. In his will, dated July 5, 1658, an abstract of which is given in the Re- gister, Vol. IX, pp 39-40, he mentions wife Martha, and children Thomas, Dorothy, John and Maria, and states that the rest of his children have had their por- tions. The Other daughters therefore were probably married before this will was made, as we know to be the case with Anna. Children by first wife. I. Marie, bapt., at Eavenham, June 22, 1619, came to Watertown with her parents, m Richard Mosely; mentioned in the will of her uncle, William Payne, in 1660. II. Thomas, born in England about 1621; died in Virgin- ia in 1666; came to New England with his parents and was living at Watertown in 1644; mentioned as eldest son in his father's will in 1658. III. Simon, born in England about 1623; came to Water- town with his parents; married about 1651, Ey- dia Starr, who died in Boston, Aug. 10, 1653, daugh- ter of Comfort of Ashford, Co. Kent, and of Cam- bridge, Mass., died a few days before his wife. Child, Simon, b Aug. 6, 1652, died 1695; mentioned THE AYRRS FAMILY. 85 in the will of his great uncle, William Payne, in 1660. Northampton, and Boston, Mass., who d Jany. 1, 1684-5, aged 75, his wife surviving him. They lived at Charlestown and Boston, and had issue. VII. Benjamin, born in England about 1631, came to New England with his parents; mentioned in the will of his uncle, William Payne, in 1660. VIII. Sarah, born in England in Jany., 1634-5; came to New England with her parents; probably died young. IX. Jonathan, born at Watertown, March 20, 1637-8; ed- ucated for a surgeon in 1656; no further record of him. X. Dorothy, born at Watertown, June 4, 1640; men- tioned in the will of her father in 1658, and in that of her uncle- William Payne, in 1660. Children by second wife. XI. We have no account that Obadiah ever married. He was a graduate of Har- vard College; studied for the ministry; a man of talents and influence, but subject, occasionally, to aberrations of mind, at which times he had lodgings in Boston pro- vided for him by his particular friend, John Hancock. 3. The records of Essex County, Mass., have fre- quent mention of this name under very many forms, such as Aars, Aers, Aier, Aiere, Aiers, Air, Aires, Airs, Ares, Aries, Ayeres, AYERS, Ayhaire, Ayre, AYRES, Eaire, Eairs, Eares, Eayer, Eayr, Eayre, Eires, Ever, Eyers, Eyre, Eyrs, Heires. I. The Ancestor of most of the name in New England, and the earliest one who lived in Essex County, was John Ayer. It is supposed that he came from Eng- land, and he was living in Salisbury, Mass., as early as 1640. He removed to Ipswich in 1646, and in the next year to Haverhill, and died there, March 31, 1657. His will was made March 12, 1657, and pro- bated Oct. 6, following. He was survived by his wife, Hannah, the mother of his children, whodiedOct. 8> 90 THE AYRES FAMILY. 1688, having been a widow for more than thirty years. Their children were: John, Rebecca, Robert, Thomas, Peter, Mary, Obadiah, Nathaniel, and Hannah. The eldest received the homestead by will. II. Cornet Peter, fourth son and fifth child of John and Hannah Ayer, was born about 1633, perhaps in Eng- land, and was made a freeman in Haverhill in May, 1666. He was a farmer in that town, which he repre- sented in the general court in 1683-1685 and 1689- 90; and otherwise active in town affairs, and in the Indian Wars. He was married Nov. 1, 1659, to Han- nah Allen, who was born June, 1742, in Salisbury, daughter of William and Hannah (Goodale) Allen. She survived him nearly thirty one years, dying his widow, Dec. 22, 1729, at the age of eighty seven years. He died in Boston in Jany., 1689. Their children, all born in Haverhill, were Ruth, Hannah, Abigail, Mary, Martha, Samuel, William, Rachel, and Ebenezer. III. Captain Samuel, eldest son and sixth child; of Cor- net Peter, and Hannah (Allen) Ayer, was born Sept. 28, 1669, in Haverhill, in which town he lived and was a yeoman. He was a man of property and among his possessions was a negro slave, named Lot. He succeeded his father as a member of the committee for the control of the common lands of the town. His efficient leadership in the Indian wars did much to prevent savage outrages. He died Jany. 2, 1744. He was married, Nov. 21, 1693, to Elizabeth Tuttle of Ipswich, who survived him nearly nine years, and. died Nov. 20, 1752. Their children were Hannah, Peter, Samuel, William, Ebenezer, Elizabeth, Simon, and Sarah. (Mention of Simon and descendants ap- pear in this article). IV. Lieut. Ebenezer, fourth son of Capt. Samuel and Eli- zabeth (Tuttle) Ayer, was born Feby. 18, 1705, in Haverhill, and settled in Methuen, Mass. Upon the establishment of the Province line in 1741, his home- THE AYRES FAMILY. 91 stead became a part of Salem, N. H. The following inscription is found on his tombstone in that town: "Here lies the body of Lieutenant Ebenezer Ayr. He departed this life March 3, 1763, aged 57 years." He was married, March 29, 1726, to Susanna, daughter of Robert and Susanna (Atwood) Kimball of Bradford, Mass. She was born May 25, 1707, and died Sept. 26, 1749, having been the mother of ten children, five of whom died young. By a second wife, Elizabeth, Lieut. Aver had five children. His widow died Jany. 2, 1786, aged seventy one years. The five surviving children of his first wife, and the five of the second wife in order of age were Ebenezer, Peter, Timothy, Joseph, Isaiah, William, Elizabeth, Samuel, Philip, John. V. Major Ebenezer, eldest son of Lieut. Ebenezer and Susanna (Kimball) Aver, was born March 22, 1727, in that part of Methuen which is now Salem. He settled in Pepperill borough, now Saco, Me. In early life he was one of Capt. John Lovewell's men in the memorable Indian fight at Pequaket, and was engaged in other expeditions. He was in the ill fated excursion of Benedict Arnold through the wilds of Maine in the winter of 1775-1776. After the Revolu- tion he did not return to Saco. He was married July 4, 1754, to Hannah (Plaisted) Scammon, widow of James Scammon. They were undoubtedly the parents of the next mentioned. VI. Moses Aver was born March 17, 1757, in Saco. Me., and was an active resident of that town. By his wife, Mary (Tyler), born Aug. 10, 1759, he had the following named children, born in Saco, Me.: Eliza- beth, John, Sarah, Hannah, Abigail, Andrew, Moses, Tristam, whose sketch follows: Tristam, eighth child of Moses and Mary (Tyler) Aver, was born in Saco, Me.,Feby. 19,1709, and died Dec. 21, 1851, in Buxton, Me. He was married Aug. 20, 1820, to Frances Moses of Buxton, who was born Jany. 24, 1801, and died 92 THE AYRES FAMILY. June 13, 1870, in Buxton. They had children named as follows; Mary A., William, Sarah E., John L., Maria G., Lyman G., Francis J., and Charles H. VII. John Lyman, fourth child and second son of Tristam and Frances Ayer, was born June 17, 1829, and died Feby., 1903, at Plymouth Mass. He was a paper maker and millwright by trade and was employed in a paper factory at Welles River, Vt. Later he worked in a saw mill, and at the lumber business in Haverhill, Mass., and vicinity. In 1890, he returned to Wells River and worked ten years for the Adams Paper Co. This concluded the active period of his life and he afterward lived retired at Plymouth, Mass. He married in Haverhill, N. H., Melissa Pike, and they were the parents of sons, JohnT., and Charles J. VIII. Charles James, son of John L. and Melissa (Pike) Ayer, was born in Haverhill, N. H., Nov. 24, 1858. Was alive in 1908. IV. Simon, son and seventh child of Capt. Samuel and Elizabeth (Tuttle) Ayer, was born Dec. 26, 1709. in Haverhill. Was a farmer. He married, Dec. 20, 1733, Mary Webster, who survived him eight years, and died Jany, 24, 1782. He died Jany. 1, 1774. Ayres, x\yers, Avars, Ayer, Ayre, Eayers, Eyer, Eyre, etc., are some of the forms of this an- cient name dating back to the eleventh century. Among the theories of its origin is the following legend: When at the battle of Hastings, 1066, William the Conqueror was flung from his horse, and his helmet beaten into his face he was rescued and mounted by a faithful follower named "Trulove. ' ' "Thou shalt no longer be called Trulove, ' ' said the Duke, "but Eyre or Air for thou hast given metheeire I breathe. ' ' Trulove was given lands in Derbyshire, a Coat of Arms displaying leg and thigh in armor cut off, and an honorary badge still worn by all the Eyres in England. What representative of the name first brought it to New England it is difficult to determine, but it is probable that the determination to hazard the future in the great New West came to several at about the same time. 94 THE AYRES FAMILY.
