NEW-YORK. 'j^ i88i. Press of Francis Hart & Co. N. Y. KEPLER'S TABLES RUNNING RACES 44 MUTUAL "FIVES, GIVING THE PERFORMANCE OF EVERY HORSE STARTING UP TO THE END OF FIRST SARATOGA MEETING, POINTS ON PARIS MUTUALS. GEO. KEPLER. NEW-YORK. ' 1881. J^ofi^TK^ ^ Copyright, 1881, by Geo. Kepler. INTRODUCTION This little book will be of value to all who desire to make hasty compai-isons of "fields." Few, except professionals, can carry in the mind the names and relative performance of all horses. Many make selections from fancy, or liking or not liking the color or manner of the horse. Others because he has made one lucky hit in which they have participated, although he may never do it again. Others always take low-weighted horses, and avoid top-weights — a great mistake — for, when owners accept weights and enter, it shows them to be satisfied that they are about evenly matched, and the owner should know best about his own horse, and usually does. Handi- capping is reduced to a science, and the novice may leave out of consideration the weight his horse carries, ninety times in one hundred. Our Tables are to the horse what Commercial Agents' reports are to business men. giving, in a line that can be taken in at a glance, the number of races started in, the number won, the best time and how it compares with the best recorded time, if not up to it ; gives the number of seconds slow, the condition of the track ; also how much it would cost to follow up the horse in the Mutuals, put on an estimate of one "5'' for each start, showing what the Mutuals 3 paid, which are actual, and can be verified tVom The Spirit of the Times, Herald, and World, all of which report Mntnais ; with a loss and gain column that tells its own story. The best recorded time is printed at the head of every page, and can be referred to upon opening the book at any part. This will be foimd handy at the end of races for comparison, and yon will not have to wait until you read in your newspaper next morning that you saw the best race of the year. Those who will use this book are not likely to seek profit or gain from horse-racing, but may take an occasional "five" in the Mutuals for the increased interest that will attach to "backing one's choice," and to do this wisely and well, a perusal of our "Mutual Tables" will be of interest. Those, however, who take more interest in the winnings than pride in their choice, the Tables will help to a profit, giving the winnings of favorites, and of second, third, and fourth choices, and showing that second, third, and fourth horses were taken 'against the favorite and the rest with a profit, at Jerome, Sheepshead, Monmouth, and Saratoga. It will be seen that favorites do not pay miicli, althougli winning the majority of races. * We therefore take against the favorite and the field — the latter seldom wins — by choosing 2d, 3d, and 4th in all fair-sized fields; and in very large fields it would he well to take otli and even 6th choice,— hut only in very large fields, and when the favorite and field are heavily taken. It is not safe to take any one of the three to stand on through a meeting, as instances occur where some one of them does not win a race. If there are more wius in 2ds, the gains will be less ; if in the 4ths, more, as will be seen by an examination of the tables. Sheepshead.
