Y. h 'T'HIS volume presents some fugitive glimpses of the village of Canton, New York, the t county seat of St. Lawrence County. Canton is a thriving, hospitable village, containing about 3500 inhabitants, situated on the River de Grasse, about 130 miles north of Syracuse and Utica, and on the line of the Rome, Watertown & Ogdensburg Railroad. It is the centre of a beautiful rolling country, dotted with fine dairy farms, and upon the edge of the Adirondack wilderness. Here is located the St. Lawrence University, the only college in this section of the State, where numbers of distinguished men and women have received their education. There are six Churches, a commodious Union School, numerous Mills and many fine Residences. The new St. Lawrence County Court House, just dedicated is without a superior in the State, and its fittings and decorations are most beautiful. Adjacent to it are the Clerk's office and County Jail. Arching maple trees and well kept lawns make the village fair to look upon and the spirit of good taste is shown by the public park in the centre, laid out and adorned by the efforts of the Village Improvement Society. According to the state vital statistics, but one locality in the whole state has a better health record than Canton. It has a modern system of sewers and water works and is becoming a popular summer resort. It is a favorite and convenient point of access to the Adirondacks, an easy drive bringing the tourist to some of the most charming spots in the wilderness.
