Barnes OBITUARIES GENERAL ALFRED C. BARNES was born in 1842 in the city of Philadelphia, of Connecticut parentage on both sides, his pedi- gree dating way back to Colonial days. His father, Alfred S. Barnes, had already established the publishing firm of A. S. Barnes & Company in 18B8, in the city of Hartford. Believing that Phila- delphia would be the future publishing center, he moved thither, but soon abandoned it for New York where the firm has ever since carried on a successful business. Alfred C. was his eldest son, and his father's successor at the time of his death in 1888, as head of the firm. In 1890 the firm sold out its school book interests to the American Book Company. The subject of this sketch went with it and became Vice President of this great concern, which is probably the largest publishing house in the world. In 1891 he founded the Astor Place Bank and became its President. In 1900 he was elected Chairman of the Associated Bankers of New York City. He was also an active member of the New York Chamber of Commerce. He was appointed without solicitation a trustee of the Brooklyn Bridge during its period of construction, and afterwards received five consecutive appointments. Many of the well known features of the Bridge were of his devising, especially the station and plaza at the Brooklyn terminal. Unfortunately the plaza was afterwards defaced by the installation of tlie elevated roads, against his earnest protest. He was for manv vears a trustee of the Brooklvn Librarv, and served three terms as its President. When the Library was trans- ferred to the trustees of the Brooklyn Public Library, he became one of that board. He was the founder and first President of the Oxford Club in Brooklyn, and was President of the Aldine Club of New York at the time of his death. The Aldine was originally an association of publishers, but being consolidated with the Uptown Association, has now a very distinguished membership from the best classes of the commercial world in the vicinity of Fifth Avenue and 18th Street, where it is located. He was also a member of the Tuxedo 28 Barnes Family Year Book 1910 and Hamilton, and Cornell l^niversity Clubs, and of the most notable patriotic societies, including the Society of the Colonial Wars, Sons of the Revolution, Society of the War of 1812, and Pennsylvania Society. He succeeded his father as a trustee of Cornell University, where he founded Barnes Reference Library, and constructed and presented to the University a Geodetic Observatory in honor of the lamented E. A. Fuertes, Director of the College of Civil Engineering. He was also formerly a trustee of the Polytechnic Institute and of the Adelphi Academy in Brooklyn, and of the Brooklyn Hospital. His Military career began in 1801 when he accompanied the Seventli Regiment of tlie National Guard to the front. Only the Sixth Massachusetts preceded the Seventh Regiment, whicli was therefore the second military body to respond to the call of the President for troops to defend Washington. He was subsequently transferred to the Twenty-thinl Regiment upon its oi-ganization in 1862, and in that Regiment participated in the Gettysburg campaign in ISO.'! in response to an emergency summons. At the expiration of liis first term of service, he retired, and remained unattached until 1877, when he returned to the Twenty-third Regiment as its Major. In 1S8<) he was appointed upon Governor Cornell's staff, with tlie rank of Brigadier General and General Inspector of Rifle Practice, State of New York. In this capacity he directed all the educational processes in this im- portant department of the service, having charge of Creedmor and all the other ranges, and fixed the routine of duty to be observed by all of the troops. Upon his retirement at the conclusion of the Governor's term, he was elected Colonel of the Thirteenth Regi- ment, N. G. S. N. Y., and remained with that organization for two years, during which it enjoyed great prosperity. The Thirteenth was subsequently transferred into an artillary regiment, and it is now the largest National Guard organization in the United States. While holding this commission, General Barnes' rank as Brigadier General was renewed by brevet. After an interval of sixteen years, he was recalled to his old Regiment, the Twenty-third, as its Colonel, his rank of Brigadier being again renewed. His principal service of public interest during this last incumbency was the conduct of his Regiment to Obituaries 29 suppress the Albany strike and incidental riots in 1902. As show- ing the facility with which a reliable National Guard Regiment can be convened for duty of this sort, it is interesting to record that the orders to proceed to Albany was received at eight o'clock in the evening, and at daylight the next morning the organization was at its post of duty in the threatened city. The authorities relied upon it principally to suppress disorder, which was successfully accom- plished in the short term of three days. General Barnes was a charter member of Lafayette Post, G. A. R., the most celebrated and influential organization of Veterans of the Civil War. On January 1st. 1902, he was elevated from the ranks and installed as Commander of the Post and the following year was re-elected for a second term, — two years being the consiitutional limit of office. Lafayette Post has over 500 members and its roll includes such names as General Barlow, Butterfield, Collis, Clarkson, Dodge, Greeley, Miles, Pierson, Serrell, Webb and Viele, Admirals Meade and Barker, and men distinguished in civil life like Chauncey M. Depew, Richard Watson Gilder, Robert C. Ogden and Joseph J. Little. General Barnes was an extensive traveler, having visited Europe many times, and in 1892-3 made the tour of the World, visiting the Hawaiian Islands, Japan, China, India, etc. He had also been to Madeira, Algiers, the Nile, the Holy Land and Con- stantinople, as well as Cuba, Mexico, Alaska, and nearly every state of the Union. His house was filled with interesting curios from all parts of the world, personally gathered during his travels. General Barnes' private life was spent quietly in Brooklyn, where he resided at No. 114 Pieirepont Street, up to the time of his death in November 1904. His wife, Mrs. Josephine R. Barnes, died in 1899. Two children survived him, Harriet Josephine, wife of Truman H. Newberry of Detroit, who was Secretary of the Navy in President Roosevelt's cabinet, and a son, Alfred Victor Barnes. He I'esigned the Wahpeton field to take the first presidency of Fargo College, to which posi- tion he gave four years of arduous labor carrying the institution through its most trying ordeal for existence. He visited New England and gave lectures of such eloquence that he obtained generous contributions to place the College on an enduring basis. ISAAC BARNES of Burlington (see Page 37, year book Xo. 2) died at his home surrounded by his family Mar. 28, 1909 in the seventy ninth year of his age. Mr. Barnes was born and brought up on a farm and that farm has always been his Jiome. The glitter- ing accounts from the gold fields of California in forty nine lured him to that eldorado of wealth. He took passage on a vessel over- loaded with gold seekers but with provisions for a few^ days only and which became exhausted upon the high sea. With starvation almost certain if the voyage was continued, the master was placed in chains, the mate in command and a race made for land, havins: reached the coast of Mexico and finding no food available most of Isaac Barnes Obituaries 35 the party struck out for California and crossed the Continent on foot, a journey the hardships of which can only be realized by those who have taken it without preparation for making the attempt, soon becoming bare-footed and stamping foot prints of blood along the rocky paths over which they were lead by treacherous guides, or carried if to sick to stand; no halting on the way; the dano-ers surrounding them put them on a race for life. Mr. Barnes reached the gold fields at last, but in no condition for labor, and witli a longing to reach the old farm alive uppermost in his mind; he reached it in time, ■ wiser if not richer. He recovered from the physical wreck he appeared and regained a robust constitution. From that time on he sought riches by hard labor and a close attention to his business interests. Besides carrying on his ex- tensive farming interests he has engaged in lumbering, butchering and numerous other business projects. He has at all times stood ready to council and assist in every public enterprise and has been closely identified with everything of this nature throughout his immediate locality. He was a director and a leading factor in the Farmington Valley Agricultural Society from its start until his death, a quarter of a century. He helped to establish and became a director of the Canton Trust Company, and a trustee in the Collinsville Savings Society. He has been a Representative in the Legislature and honored in his town. He has left a good life record, has been a true and faithful citizen, and he will l;ie missed and not forgotten while any who have known him are left to honor his memory. MRS. EMMA E.
