R. T.). Both systems have lines in Manhattan, and neither transfers to the other. Interborough Lines West Side Line. Composed of the First Sub- way north of 42nd St., with its Broadway and Bronx branches, and of the Seventh Avenue Sub- 30 way from 42nd St. south to the Battery. A branch of this line extends to Brooklyn, connect- ing with existing Interborough Lines in that bor- ough at Borough Hall. Express stations in New York: South Ferry, Rector St., Cortlandt St., Chambers St., 14th St. and 7th Ave., Pennsyl- vania Station, Times Square, 72nd St. and Broad- way, 96th St. and Broadway. From this point the Broadway Branch extends to 242nd St. and Broadway (Van Cortlandt Park). The Lenox Avenue and West Farms Branch continues from Broadway and 96th St., the Lenox Ave. section terminating at 145th St. and Lenox Ave., and the West Farms Branch diverging at 135th St. and Lenox Ave. to pass through the Borough of the Bronx and terminate at 180th St. and Boston Road (Southeast entrance to Bronx Zoological Park). The White Plains Road Extension from 177th St. is an elevated railway which runs to East 241st St. The Park Place, William and Clark Street Subway connects by subway and tunnel underneath the East River between the West Side Line and the First Subway in Brook- lyn, at Borough Hall. Stations in New York: Wall and Pine Sts., Fulton, John and Ann Sts., Park Place and Broadway, where it joins the tracks of the West Side Line, the next station being Chambers St. East Side Line. Composed of the First Sub- way south of 42nd St., with its Brooklyn connec- tion to Atlantic Ave. (Long Island Ry. Station), and of the Lexington Avenue Subway north of 42nd St. with its Jerome Ave. and Pelham Bay Park branches in the Bronx. The Lexington 31 Avenue Subway connects with the Bronx Branch of the West Side Line at 149th St., which has been extended on White Plains Road to 241st St., as above. Express stations in New York: South Ferry, Bowling Green, Wall St., Fulton St., Brooklyn Bridge, 14th St. and Union Square, Grand Central Station (42nd St.), 86th St. and Lexington Ave., 125th St. and Lexington Ave. From here the River and Jerome Avenue Branch continues to Woodlawn, with express stations at 149th St. and New York University. The Pel- ham Bay Park Branch diverges at 138th St. and extends through the Bronx to Pelham Bay Park, with express stations at 3rd Ave. and 138th St. and at LIunt's Point Ave. Incomplete beyond this point. Interchange of traffic across 42nd St. between the East Side Line and the West Side Line is effected by a shuttle service between Times Square and Grand Central Station, operated over tracks of the First Subway. Queens Line. Consists of the Queensboro Sub- way, beginning at Grand Central Station, Man- hattan, and extending to Astoria and Corona. This line will eventually be extended from Grand Central Station to Times Square. New York Municipal Railway (B. R. T.) Lines Broadway Subway. From connections with the subway and elevated systems in Brooklyn by tunnel to Whitehall St., Manhattan, and thence north, principally in Broadway, to 59th St. and 7th Ave. At 59th St. a line will extend east into 6 2 Queens, connecting with the Queens Line, above mentioned, over which this company has track- age rights. Connection is also had to other B. R. T. subway and elevated lines in Brooklyn by way of the Canal Street Subway and the Cen- ter Street Loop Subway, and elsewhere. Ex- press stations in New York are as follows: Whitehall St., Rector St., Cortlandt St., City Hall, Union Square (14th St.), 34th St. & Broad- way, Times Square, 57th St. & Broadway. 14th Street-Eastern Line. Under construc- tion. SURFACE CAR LINES Practically every avenue except Fifth Avenue and Riverside Drive has a surface car line run- ning North and South. In the main, these lines travel the greater part of their route on the ave- nue from which they take their name, and the more important exceptions are as follows : Sixth Avenue Line, except for those cars which run to 59th St. only, crosses 53rd St. and continues up Amsterdam Ave. to 125th St., via Columbus Ave. and Broadway. Third Avenue Line runs a Fort George Branch which leaves 3rd Ave. at 125th St., crosses to Amsterdam Ave. and continues to 195th St. (Fort George). A Kingsbridge Branch leaves Amster- dam Ave. at 162nd St. and continues on Broad- way to 225th St. Broadway Branch Line runs on 1st Ave. from 34th St., through 42nd St. to 7th Ave., to 45th St. ; thence on Broadway to Manhattan St., to 33 Amsterdam Ave. and 162nd St., to Broadway and 1 81 st St. Columbus Avenue Line runs on Broadway to 45th St., up 7th Ave. to W. 53rd St., to 9th Ave. and Columbus Ave., to 109th St., to Manhattan Ave., to 116th St., to Lenox Ave., to 146th St. Lexington Avenue Line runs on Broadway to 23rd St., to Lexington Ave., to 131st St. Some cars cross 116th St. to Lenox Ave., to 146th St. Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue Line leaves Broadway at 45th St., goes up 7th Ave. to 53rd St., to 9th Ave., to Columbus Ave., to Broadway, to Amsterdam Ave., to 125th St. Besides the street railways running North and South there are Crosstown lines on the following streets (only the more important are given) : Crosstown: 8th St., 14th St., 23rd St., 28th St. west to east only, 29th St. east to west only, 34th St., 42nd St., 59th St., 86th St. — only runs west as far as 8th Ave. — 116th St., 125th St., 145th St., 149th St. TAXICABS AND HORSE CABS Taxicabs may be picked up on any main thor- oughfare, and there are also cab stands in many of the squares and in the side streets adjoining the avenues. The rate for public cabs is as fol- lows: One or Two Persons First half mile 30c. Each quarter mile thereafter 10c. Three or More Persons First half mile 30c. Each one-sixth mile thereafter 10c. 34 Public taxis all start their meters at 30 cents, but this does not apply to private taxicab com- panies, who make different charges from the pub- lic taxicabs. A charge of 20 cents may be made for each trunk, but bags are carried free. The rate for horse cabs is 50 cents for the first mile or any part thereof, and 20 cents for each additional half mile or any part thereof, or $1.50 per hour for shopping and calling. TEA Nearly all the large hotels have tea rooms where there is music during the tea hour. The tea rooms and confectioners given below all serve luncheon as well as tea, and most of them serve dinner. They have been grouped here in accordance with their scale of prices in the same manner as the hotels and restaurants. Below Forty-second Street a. Henry Maillard, 5th Ave. and 35th St. a.
