/8V1 Hollinger Corp. pH 8.5 IS 1 ! 1 ] GENERAL CATALOGUE OF THE OFFICERS AND GRADUATES IN THE DEPARTMENT OF ARTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA: FROM 1749 UNTIL 1849 1 PHILADELPHIA; CRISSY & MARKLEY, PRINTERS, NO. 4 MINOR STREET. 1849. \) The following Catalogue of the Officers and Graduates in the Department of Arts, of the University of Pennsylvania, has been prepared in accordance with a Resolution of the Managers of the Society of the Alumni, and under the authority of the Board of Trustees. The Committee, appointed to prepare it, were much assisted by a manuscript catalogue drawn up, several years since, by William B. Reed, Esq., and one more recently prepared by Thomas H. M'Allister, Esq., (now of Louisville, Kentucky.) The old Gazettes in the Philadelphia Library were also ex- amined, and the Catalogue, as now presented, the Committee believe to be as complete as the deficiency of the college re- cords will allow. Some years, it will be perceived, are entirely without the names of the graduates. The occupation of the city, by the British army, in 1777 and 1778, and the consequent closing of the College, account for a part of these deficiencies. In several other years, it is thought that no commencements were held, so that the actual omissions are perhaps narrowed down to four or five classes. The friends of the University are requested to do all in their power to supply these blank years, and also to note such errors as may exist in the present Catalogue, so that a second edition may be made as perfect as possible.
