PREFACE There is scarcely any condition of life in which a know- ledge of the modern languages may not be found of advan- tage. The statesman, the merchant, the seaman, the sol- dier; every one, in short, whom business, pleasure, duty, or distress may cause to visit or correspond with foreign nations, must occasionally be sensible of its importance. The French, it is true, is generally understood in the higher circles, and in the principal cities of Europe; but a person travelling through the interior of a country, or who may have business among the middle and lower orders of people, will find himself greatly at a loss with the assistance of that alone. The English and German languages being derived from the same origin, bear a great affinity to each other ; and the analogy between the French, Italian, Spanish, and Portuguese, and the Latin, from which these last are evi- dently derived, is still stronger. It was from observing this connection, and the uses to which it might be applied, that the plan of the following work first occurred to the com- piler. He natters himself, that by bringing this parent tongue, and the six principal languages of Europe under one point of view, the student will not only be supplied with the same means of acquiring either, that an ordinary vocabulary would furnish him with ; but that by shewing their mutual dependence and relation, the attainment of any one, or all of them, will be greatly facilitated. Hence may fairly be deduced the propriety of making Latin the groundwork of literature ; and with deference he submits this work will be found useful in schools, to teach ortho- graphy, as well as languages, the junior classes being taught to spell the English, when repealing the Latin or French word ; while those more advanced, after going through one column, might learn the rest; till by degrees a boy, before leaving school, would become master of them a!!. 80 san- guine, indeed, is the author, of the success of such a plan, as to hazard a conjecture, that a boy of tolerable capacity, xV PREFACE. while learning the Latin or French column, would, as it were insensibly, acquire so much of the remaining ones, us by the time he could read Caesar or Gil Bias in either, to be able, with very little difficulty, to construe those ex- cellent authors, if not from the German, at least from the three southern European languages. This is particularly true of those well grounded in Latin, which proves the propriety of teaching it. This book possesses one advantage over any other com- pilation of this nature the author has met with, that of being composed in alphabetical order; when this is not the case, much time is necessarily lost in searching for a word which after all is not to be found ; but as this arrangement is is now chiefly serviceable to the people of this country, the author has now in the press, and will shortly publish in distinct small pocket volumes, the Portuguese and Spanish parts of this work ; the foreign language being placed first, in alphabetical order. These little books, the plan of which he believes to be new, and the want of which he has him- self experienced in teaching foreigners English, will not only assist the natives of the peninsula in acquiring a ge- neral knowledge of English, but prove highly useful to a master in teaching pupils who come here to acquire that language. The other languages will likewise be published in a similar manner. The Verbs and the Substantive are the constituent parts of speech in every language ; the former may not unaptly be termed the wheels of the carriage, and the latter the body. Both are supplied in this compilation, to a very considera- ble degree,* and little is wanting but the inflexion of. the verb,f to give a learner such a general knowledge, of either of the languages contained in this book, as to enable him to make himself understood in the country in which it is spoken, upon ordinary occasions, or to construe any easy author. Indeed, the compiler knows of no better method for a student, even, than to do the same, and trust to good authors and good speakers for attainment of the rest. As * Small as this book may appear, from the pains taken to com- press it as much as possible, it contains, taking all the languagei together, not less than 13,000 Substantives and 2,100 Verbs. t The Latin is expressly excepted from this reasoning. PREFACE. V to travelling through the laboured definitions and unintelligi* ble distinctions with which many grammars abound, and which the late Dr. Gregory termed the mere pedantry of grammar, it is worse than so much time lost. A man will learn more of the French idiom and tournure des phrases, from reading ten paged of Le Sage, than from all the at- tempts ever made to construe them — Indeed, many cannot be rendered, which exposes the poverty of even the best translations. Persons who affect to hold compilations such as the pre- sent lightly, would do well to reflect, that there are but two ways by which knowledge of any kind enters the mind ; through the eyes or the ears : now the former is only to be effected by means of Translations, Dialogues, or Vocabu- laries. The first of these is tedious, and will do but little in a long time towards the acquirement of a living language; beside, there are but few books, and those of course but little known to foreigners, whose subjects are adapted to the purposes of common life : a person may read Telemaque from beginning to end without knowing the French for a kitchen or a candle. Dialogues, though highly useful, if Avell con- structed, are liable to great objections ; inasmuch as whole sentences being moved together, the learner often knows not the precise meaning of any one word ; beside, there are but very few foreigners who know enough of the idiom of the language into which they profess to render their own, to do it correctly.* The Vocabulary, on the other hand, is simple, its subjects adapted to the common purposes of life; and requiring no prepared and laborious chain of thought, may be as effectually consulted by the gentleman while sitting in his chaise, or the officer when in his cabin or tent, as by the student in his closet. The Portuguese, independently of their settlements in the African Islands, from having been the first European nation that weathered the Cape, and planted colonies to the east of it, have dispersed their language very widely on the coasts of Hind os tan, and through the islands. of the Indian Archipelago. The importance, therefore, of a knowledge of it to gentJemen in the Honourable East India Com- * In order to construct a set of Dia'oir.scs property, it requires the united talents of a native of eat '. ftf the countries whose lan- guage* are contained in them. 2 a VI PREFACE. pany's service, or to those who may have occasion, to visit that part of the world, is obvious. Indeed, by means of that, and its parent Spanish; these two nations, to their honour, having been the first who made discoveries in the East, as well as the West Indies, an intercourse with the natives of both may be very generally effected : thus there has long existed a motive for the study of both these lan- guages. To this we may add the information and amuse- ment every rational mind must derive* from the perusal of foreign authors, in their native strength and lustre; undi- minished by the weakness, and unclouded by the errors of translation. The present intimate connection between Great Britain, Spain, and Portugal, affords a still more interest- ing motive for the study of these two languages ; the poli-> tical and commercial interests of these countries, in the new world and old, are now become so blended and involved, that a knowledge of each other's language appears to be rather an object of business, than of science; of use, than of ornament; to their several inhabitants; since scarcely any one at all connected with the Cabinet or Compting-house, the Navy, the Army, or the Merchants service, can tell how soon he may be called upon to exer- cise it. In order to facilitate as much as possible the difficulty of learning a foreign tongue, the German is here expressed in the ordinary character. The paths of science should in every pursuit be cleared, as much as possible of the rub-r bish that lies in the way of learners, especially those of a tender age. The very sight of a German book is enough to daunt a boy, and terrify a young lady ; indeed the differ- ence of character, especially when badly printed, which is often the case, presents more serious impediments to the ac T quirement of that or any other language, than those at- tached to received customs are willing to admit. With all due deference to that ancient, able, and learned nation, it is not easy to conceive that their language would lose any thing of its force or beauty, were it divested of this anti- quated dress, and made to look like that of its neighbours. It were the height of ignorance and presumption to suppose a work of this nature can be literally correct ; but the utmost endeavours of the author and his friends have been used to make it so; to all of whom, and par- ticularly to Mr. Brian, of SomersTown, for his revision PREFACE. Til of the German pari of the work, he thus publicly begs leave to return his thanks. A considerable number of military terms are inserted, foe the -use of Gentlemen in the army; and any additions or emendations which any. gentleman in the service may be pleased to suggest, in order to make this part of the work more extensively useful to either officer or soldier, will be gratefully acknowledged. For the sake of perspicuity, the substantives are here given without the articles, which, when expressed by an elision, are apt to be confounded with each other, and with the noun, especially by children. This obliges the author to give such a general idea of the latter as is necessary to the use of the work, which he will do as briefly as possible, refeiv ring the student to the respective grammars for a more pei> feet knowledge. The articles are certain little words prefixed to nouns in the modern languages, to determine the extent of their signification. They are of two kinds, the Indefinite and the Definite. The former is expressed in English by a before nouns beginning with a consonant, and by an before those beginning with a vowel. The Definite Article is expressed by the, whether before nouns beginning with a consonant or vowel; as, Indefinite. Definite. a man, a woman; the man, the infant, an actor, an actress; the actor, the actress. The English language, with singular propriety, admits of no other distinction of gender than what exists in nature ; and its articles, as may be seen above, are common to both. It is far otherwise, however, with the rest of the lan- guages contained in this book. The Latin admits of three; the masculine, feminine, and neuter ; but it has no separate article corresponding with our a and the. The German follows the same regime as the Latin; having like it a neuter gender, determinable by the nature of the noun. The Indefinite Article is ein, eine, ein; as, ein mann, a man ; eine frau, a woman ; ein kind, a child. The Definite Article is der, die, das; as, Sing, der vater, die mutter, das kind : Plural, die, for the three genders. The French have but two genders, the masculine and feminine ; under one or other of which all things, animate and inanimate, are classed. Vlll PREFACE. The Indefinite Article is, «n, for the masculine; and une, for the feminine ; and answers to our a and an ; as, un homme, a man ; une femme, a woman. The Definite Article is, le, for the masculine; and la, for the feminine: but this is merely before nouns beginning with a consonant ; for, before tho.,e beginning with a vowel, or an h without the aspiration, no distinction in the article prevails in the singular number, the final vowel being cut off, and its place supplied by an elision. They make the plural alike; as, le pe;e, the father; la mere, the mother; /'homme, the man ; /'enfant, the child ; les peres ; les meres ; les homines; les enfans. The Indefinite Article in Italian is, uno, for the mas- culine ; and una, for the feminine : the former of which is curtailed before nouns beginning with a consonant; thus, they say, un libro, a book The Definite Articles are, i/and lo, for the masculine, and la, for the feminine. // is placed before nouns which begin with a consonant, and makes i in the plural; as, il padre, the father; i padri, the fathers. Lo, which makes gli, in the plural, is placed before nouns beginuing with an s, followed by a consonant ; as, lo specchio, the looking glass ; gli specchi, the glasses : but before nouns masculine, beginning with a vowel, the o is cut off; as, /'onore, the honor; g7'onori, the honors. La is the feminine article, which makes le, in the plural ; as, la casa ; le case. The Indefinite Article in Spanish is, uno, for the mas- culine, and una, for the feminine ; but, uno, when it comes before a noun, loses o; as, un hombre, a man; un libro, a book. The Definite Articles in Spanish, are el, for the mascu- line, which makes los in the plural ; and la, for the feminine, which makes las in the plural; as el rey, the king; los reyes, the kings; la reyne, the queen; las reynes, the queens. The Portuguese Indefinite Article is, hum, for the masculine ; and hurna, for the feminine ; as, hum homem, a man ; huma mulher, a woman. The Definite is, o, for the masculine ; and a, for the femi- nine, which make their plural by os, and as; as, o homem, the man ; a mulher, the woman; os homems, the men; ~ "S ° w ^ u, S < s -. ^ 5 "3 '3 5 rr*3 o £ £3 g";. a" S -5 S S ~- c * 8 a ■ • • 1? « . «J ^ q £ s s < S ^ ! -§ v -rd ^ q g a a a a 5 -I g g 6 E a EsJD 3 u a 5 c to c^S q ft fe cc ?- ex 4 >■ > p — g ~ -? s r;- g . +j a a; — .3 i* § § 1-2 || £ t£i o -5 W < ^ < C .2 jb 2 S § 5.1 J s f-i b S> w p "S ; S g a § « «* R « OO/, to Europa, /.
