 PREFACE 
 
 In taking up this subject which is attracting so much 
 attention these days, we do not propose to attack Mrs. Eddy 
 or Christian Scientists, as we have no quarrel with them. 
 But we do propose to prove by Scripture that the teachings 
 of Mrs. Eddy, and as taught by Christian Scientists, are not 
 only, not in accord with the teachings of Jesus Christ, as 
 taught in the Bible, but opposed to the teaching of the 
 Word of God. And not being in harmony with the teaching 
 of Jesus Christ, cannot be rightly called CHRISTIAN. 
 
 We propose to use Mrs. Eddy's own words, and prove 
 to the reader that she does not believe the Bible ; That the 
 statement "That the Bible is their only guide," is wholly un- 
 true. We shall prove that the so-called healing as taught 
 and practiced by Christian Science, is NOT "Divine Heal- 
 ing," as taught in the Bible ; and believed by CHRISTIANS ; 
 And that the so-called religion of Mrs. Eddy is not the re- 
 ligion of Jesus Christ, and the Apostles, and as revealed to 
 us by the Holy Ghost. 
 
 It is not our intention to go into an exhaustive study of 
 this cult, as this has been done most effectively by others. 
 But we do propose to take every fundamental doctrine of 
 Scripture, and show that Mrs. Eddy either positively denies 
 it, or by her method of explaining Scripture, theorizes it un- 
 til it has lost its Scriptural meaning, and wrested from its 
 Bible connection. 
 
 We are not going to tell what we think about Christian 
 Science, nor what any person thinks of it, but what God the 
 Holy Ghost says about it in the Bible, and that will be final 
 to every honest seeker after the truth.

 We are going to quote from MriL Eddy's book, and then 
 give the Scripture, chapter and v^rse that will answer the

quotation. All quotations found in this book, are taken 
 from the 1913 edition of Science and Health, unless other- 
 wise stated. We have been accused of not quoting cor- 
 rectly the statements made by Mrs. Eddy, since some can- 
 not find the quotation on the page given. The book has 
 passed through so many revisions, that the page given in 
 the 1913 edition, does not always correspond to the same 
 page in other editions of her book. Some of the chapters 
 found in the middle and back part of other editions, are 
 found in the front of the edition that I am using. So has the 
 subject matter been shifted, that even the same matter is not 
 alv/ays found under the same heading. By this act of shift- 
 ing, in revising her book, she has changed the location of the 
 contents of the book. If you will refer to the edition from 
 which I am quoting, you will find every quotation as given 
 here. This is important to the reader. 
 
 All quotations of Mrs. Eddy and her followers are 
 printed in bold face type. 
 
 The answers and attack made here, is the Bible's against 
 the teachings of Mrs. Eddy. We propose to prove that the 
 Bible and Christian Science do not agree, and thus answer- 
 ing the question found in the title of this book. We believe 
 that any person seeking to know the truth on this subject, 
 will find the light, and be saved from one of the most dan- 
 gerous teachings abroad in the land today.

CHAPTER I 
 GOD 
 
 P. 331. L. 18. .."God is divine PRINCIPLE." 
 
 When you hear a Christian Scientist talk about God, 
 you know what they mean. A PRINCIPLE. That is not 
 the God of the Bible, and that Christians pray to, and be- 
 lieve in. The God of the Bible has all the attributes of 
 personality. Has emotions. Zach. 8: 17, "I hate saith the 
 Lord." God can hate. Next, He can be angry. Jer. 4: 8, 
 "For the fierce anger of the Lord is not turned back from us.' 
 God is JEALOUS, Joshua 24: 19, "He is a jealous God." 
 Has INDIGNATION, Ezk. 21: 31, "I will pour out mine 
 indignation upon thee." LOVES, John 3: 16, "For God so 
 loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son." Full 
 of MERCY. Eph. 2 : 4, "But God who is rich in MERCY." 
 
 Has the attributes of personality. Gen. 1 : 27, "So God 
 created man in His own image." 
 
 Gen. 2: 8, "And the Lord God planted a garden east- 
 ward in Eden; and there He put the man whom He had 
 formed." 
 
 Gen. 3 : 8, "And they heard the voice of the Lord God 
 walking in the garden." 
 
 Gen. 3: 21, "Unto Adam also and to his wife did the 
 Lord God make coats of skins, and clothed them." 
 
 None of these attributes can be applied to principle, 
 but to a PERSON. Let us substitute Mrs. Eddy's God PRIN- 
 CIPLE, and hear how it will read. 
 
 And the Principle planted a garden eastward in Eden ; 
 and there Principle put the man which Principle formed. 
 
 And they heard the voice of the Principle walking in 
 the garden. 
 
 But Principle which is rich in mercy. 
 
 So Principle created man in Principle's image. 
 
 Unto Adam also and unto his wife did the Principle 
 make coats of skin.

Luke 1: 19, "And the Angel answered and said unto 
 him, I am Gabriel, that stand in the presence of Principle." 
 
 74th Edition, P. 452. "God is SUBSTANCE, that is, the 
 only real substance." 
 
 Then the only real substance in the world is God ; and 
 God is good, all else SIN, Sickness, Satan, Death are unreal. 
 The ONLY REAL thing is Deity, and this Deity is IMPER- 
 SONAL. So the ONLY REAL thing in the universe is IM- 
 PERSONALITY, as Christian Science says on Page 605, 
 "IMPERSONAL BEING." 
 
 Hear the testimony of the Bible. 
 
 Exodus 3 : 14. "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT 
 I AM ; and He said, thus shalt thou say unto the children of 
 Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you." 
 
 2 Chron. 13: 12, "And, behold God Himself is with us 
 for our captain/' 
 
 Isaiah 41 : 13, "For I the Lord thy God WILL HOLD 
 THY RIGHT HAND saying unto thee, Fear not; I WILL 
 HELP THEE." 
 
 What stronger language could be used to show that 
 God is a Person, and not as Mrs. Eddy says, a Principle, or 
 SUBSTANCE. 
 
 P. 284. L. 1. "It is not rational to say that mind is in- 
 finite, but dwells in finiteness,— or that matter is the medi- 
 um of mind." 
 
 Mrs. Eddy charges the Bible as not being rational, for 
 it tells us different. 
 
 John 1 : 14, "And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt 
 among us, (And we beheld His glory, the glory as of the 
 only begotten of the Father) (full of grace and truth." 
 
 P. 275. L. 12. "LIFE, TRUTH, LOVE, are Scripture 
 names for God." 
 
 Life, truth, and love are not Scriptural names for God. 
 They are the attributes of God. God is love, but love is not 
 God. God is truth, but truth is not God. When Mrs. Eddy 
 speaks of God she explains herself, her meaning by saying, 
 "God is Principle," that is, not God in the concrete, a per- 
 sonal conscious being, but God in the abstract, as Principle, 
 Truth, Love, Power. The heathen have always understood 
 God in this light, hence they deify every passion and am- 
 bition. 
 
 The Bible teaches that God is a PERSON, Scriptural, 
 eternal, and all powerful. His natural attributes, unity, 
 eternity, omnipotence, omni-presence, omnicient, immut-

ability and invisibility. These attributes He cannot com- 
 municate to His creatures. Then His moral attributes, wis- 
 dom, goodness, holiness, justice, mercy, truth and peace. 
 These attributes are not God, but are essential qualities of 
 His nature ; through these He manifests His being. 
 
 Heb. 1 : 1-3, "God who, at sundry times and in divers 
 manners spake in times past unto the fathers by the 
 prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by HIS 
 SON, whom HE hath appointed heir of all things, by whom 
 also HE made the worlds ; Who being the brightness of HIS 
 glory, and the express image of HIS PERSON, and uphold- 
 ing all things by the word of HIS power, when HE had by 
 HIMSELF purged our sins sat down on the right hand of 
 the Majesty on high;" 
 
 Exodus 6:2, 3. "And GOD SPAKE unto Moses, and said 
 unto him, I am the LORD : And I appeared unto Abraham, 
 unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of GOD Almighty, 
 But by my name JEHOVAH was I not known unto them." 
 
 P. 284. L. 13. "Can the infinite dwell in the finite?" 
 
 If the Bible is true it can. The incarnate Christ lived 
 in the fleshly body thirty-three years. 
 
 Heb. 2: 14, 17. "Forasmuch then as the children are 
 partakers of flesh and blood, he also likewise took part of 
 the same; that through death he might destroy him that 
 had the power of death, that is, the devil ; Wherefore in all 
 things it behooved Him to be made like unto His brethren, 
 that He might be a merciful and faithful high priest in 
 things pertaining to God, to make reconciliation for the 
 sins of the people." 
 
 P. 256. L. 9. "THE THEORY OF THREE PERSONS in 
 one God, (that is personal Trinity or Tri-unity) SUGGESTS 
 POLYTHEISM, rather than the one ever present I am." 
 
 That is what Mrs. Eddy says, but the Bible does not 
 teach this; So she must be wrong. Jesus said before He 
 went away, 
 
 John 14: 10, 16, 17, 26. "Believest thou not that I am 
 in the Father, and the Father IN me? the words that I speak 
 unto you, I speak not of myself ; but the Father that dwell- 
 eth IN me, he doeth the works. And I will pray the Father 
 and He shall give you another Comforter, that He may 
 abide with you forever; Even the Spirit of truth: whom 
 the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither 
 knoweth Him: but ye know Him; for he dwelleth with you, 
 and shall be in you. But the Comforter, which is the Holy

Ghost whom the Father will send in my name." 1 John 5 : 7 
 'Tor there are three that bear record in Heaven, the Father, 
 the Word, (or Christ) and the Holy Ghost: and THESE 
 THREE ARE ONE." 
 
 Now get Mrs. Eddy's definition of the Trinity. 
 
 P. 331. L. 26. .."Life, Truth, and Love constitute the 
 triune Person called God. ..God the FATHER-MOTHER; 
 CHRIST the SPIRITUAL IDEA of SONSHIP; DIVINE 
 SCIENCE or the Holy Comforter. These three express in 
 divine Science the threefold, essential nature of the infinite." 
 
 Take the testimony of the Bible here, and you will see 
 that the Bible teaches something very different from the 
 statement above. 
 
 1 John 5:7. "For there are three that bear record in 
 Heaven, the FATHER, the WORD, (meaning Christ) and 
 the Holy Ghost: and these three ARE ONE." 
 
 This does not say that Life, Truth and love constitute 
 the triune God, but that GOD, JESUS CHRIST, and THE 
 HOLY GHOST constitute the triune God. 
 
 John 14:26. "But the Comforter, which is the Holy 
 Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name." 
 
 Notice the persons mentioned here. COMFORTER, 
 FATHER, SON. (My name) 
 
 Mrs. Eddy's God is LIFE, TRUTH, LOVE. Her Christ 
 is a SPIRITUAL IDEA. Her Holy Comforter, is Divine 
 Science, — She means Christian Science, and yet she says, 
 "She takes the inspired word of God as her sufficient guide 
 to eternal life." Here you see how she takes it. Mrs. Eddy's 
 God, in spite of all her claims, is not the God of the Bible. 
 By no reasoning, logic, or common sense can Mrs. Eddy's 
 definition of God be reconciled with the Bible. 
 
 Soul is not God. Principle is not God. Life and Truth 
 are not God. An attribute of a person is not the person, 
 any more than a building is the builder. 
 
 Christian Science takes away a personal God. 
 
 The Bible reveals a personal God. 
 
 The God of Christian Science is not to be found in the 
 Bible. 
 
 The God of the Bible is not to be found in Christian 
 Science. 
 
 Which do you accept. To choose one, is to reject the 
 other. 
 
CHAPTER II 
 
 JESUS CHRIST 
 
 P. 29. L. 32, "Jesus was the offspring of Mary's self- 
 conscious communion with God." 
 
 This is almost, if not altogether BLASPHEMY. When 
 the Bible says in Luke 1 : 30, 31, 35, "And the Angel said 
 unto her. Fear not Mary: For thou hast found favor with 
 God: And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and 
 bring forth a SON, and shall call his name JESUS. — And 
 the Angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost 
 shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall 
 overshadow thee; therefore also that Holy thing which 
 shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God." 
 
 Math. 1: 20, "But while he thought on these things, 
 behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, 
 saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto 
 thee Mary thy wife ; for that which is CONCEIVED IN HER 
 IS OF THE HOLY GHOST." John 1 : 14, "And the Word 
 (Christ) was made FLESH, and dwelt among us, the only 
 BEGOTTEN OF THE FATHER." 
 
 P. 29. L. 17, "The Virgin mother CONCEIVED THE 
 IDEA OF GOD, and gave to HER IDEAL, the name of 
 Jesus." 
 
 According to Mrs. Eddy Jesus Christ is only an IDEA, 
 but according to the Scripture, Jesus Christ is a PERSON, 
 BORN of the VIRGIN MARY, CONCEIVED by the HOLY 
 GHOST. 
 
 Math. 1 : 20, "The angel of the Lord appeared unto him 
 in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to 
 take unto thee Mary thy wife ; for that which is CONCEIV- 
 ED in her is of the HOLY GHOST." 
 
 Luke 2 : 7, "And she brought forth her first BORN 
 and wrapped HIM in swaddling clothes, and laid HIM in 
 a manger." 
 
 P. 29. L. 26, "The Christ dwelt forever AN IDEA in 
 
the bosom of God, the divine principle of the man Jesus, 
 and the WOMAN PERCEIVED THIS SPIRITUAL IDEA, 
 though at first faintly developed." 
 
 The Christ never was an IDEA, and never dwelt as 
 such in the bosom of God, for the Scripture declares He was 
 a PERSON. BORN into the WORLD. 
 
 Luke 2 : 7, "Anb she brought forth her first BORN 
 SON." 
 
 Luke 1 : 80, "And the CHILD GREW." 
 
 Luke 2 : 40, "And the CHILD GREW, and waxed strong 
 in spirit, filled with wisdom ; and the grace of God was up- 
 on HIM." 
 
 1 Tim. 2 : 5, "For there is one God, and ONE mediator 
 between God and man, the MAN CHRIST Jesus." 
 
 P. 315. L. 29, "Jesus wearing in part a human form 
 (that is, as it seemed to mortal view)." 
 
 According to Christian Science, Jesus did not really 
 EXIST in the flesh. He only "seemed" to have a material 
 body. But the Scripture teaches otherwise. 
 
 Isa. 9 : 6, "Unto us a CHILD is BORN, unto us a SON 
 is given, and the government shall be upon His shoulders, 
 and HIS name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The 
 Mighty God." 
 
 Heb. 1 :16, "For verily He took not on Him the nature 
 of anprels ; but He took on Him the seed of Abraham." 
 
 1 Tim. 2:15, "The MAN Christ Jesus." 
 
 John 1: 14, "And the Word (Christ) was made 
 FLESH." 
 
 74th Edition, P. 229, "Christ was INCORPORAL, 
 whereas Jesus was a corporeal or bodily existence." 
 
 The Bible says, in Luke 2: 26, "And it was revealed 
 unto him (to Simeon) by the Holy Ghost, that he should not 
 see death, before he had SEEN the Lord's "CHRIST." How 
 could Simeon have seen him, if he was INCORPORAL? 
 
 Math. 26: 67, 68, "Then they did spit in HIS FACE, 
 and BUFFETED Him; and others SMOTE HIM with the 
 palms of their hands, Saying, Phophesy unto us, Thou 
 Christ, who is he that SMOTE THEE." 
 
 They SPIT in Christ's face, They BUFFETED the 
 CHRIST, They SMOTE the CHRIST; They talked to the 
 CHRIST. Could language be stronger to prove His COR- 
 POREAL or BODILY existence? 
 
 But again, Rom. 7 : 4, "Ye are become dead to the law 
 by THE BODY OF CHRIIST."

74th Edition, P. 231, "A portion of God could not enter 
 corporeal mortal man, neither could His fulness be reflect- 
 ed by him, — God can only be reflected by spiritual, incor- 
 poreal man." 
 
 The Bible says that Jesus while on earth was MORTAL 
 man. He Himself said, John 14: 9, "He that hath SEEN Me 
 hath seen the Father." 
 
 Isa. 9: 5, "Unto us a CHILD is born, unto us a SON is 
 given* and His Name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, 
 The Mighty God." 
 
 Here we have a CHILD BORN, and this CHILD is the 
 MIGHTY GOD. 
 
 Col. 2 : 9, "In Him dwelleth ALL THE FULNESS of the 
 GODHEAD BODILY." 
 
 2 Cor. 5 : 19, "GOD WAS IN CHRIST." 
 
 P. 333. L. 32, "By these sayings Jesus meant, not 
 that the human Jesus WAS OR IS ETERNAL, but that THE 
 DIVINE IDEA OR CHRIST WAS AND IS SO and therefore 
 antedated Abraham; NOT THAT THE CORPOREAJL 
 JESUS WAS ONE WITH THE FATHER, God was greater, 
 infinitely greater, than the fleshly Jesus." 
 
 Christian Science robs Jesus of His Deity. But the 
 Bible is very clear here, and its testimony must be taken. 
 
 John 10: 30, "I and my FATHER ARE ONE." 
 
 John 5: 18. "The Jews sought to kill Jesus because He 
 made "HIMSELF" EQUAL WITH GOD." 
 
 John 14 :9, "He that hath seen me, hath seen the 
 Father." 
 
 Phil. 2: 5, 6, "Let this mind be in you, which was also 
 in Christ Jesus; Who, being in the form of God, thought it 
 not robbery to be EQUAL WITH GOD." 
 
 74th, Edition, P. 84, "The spiritual Christ was IN- 
 FALLIBLE; Jesus, as material manhood, WAS NOT THE 
 CHRIST " 
 
 The Bible says Jesus WAS THE CHRIST. 
 
 Matt. 1: 16, "Jesus, WHO IS CALLED CHRIST." 
 Acts 17: 2, 3, "Paul, as his manner was, went in unto 
 them and three Sabbath days reasoned with them out of the 
 Scriptures, opening and alleging, that Christ must needs 
 have suffered, and risen again from the dead; and that 
 THIS JESUS, whom I preach unto you, IS CHRIST." 
 
 P. 334. L. 10, "The INVISIBLE CHRIST was impercept- 
 ible to the so-called nersonal sense, whereas JESUS WAS A 
 BODILY EXISTENCE. This dual personality, continued

until the Master's ascension, when the human, — material 
 concept, — or JESUS DISAPPEARED, while the spiritual 
 self, or CHRIST, CONTINUED in the eternal order of 
 divine science. 
 
 Let us take the above quotation and compare it with 
 the Scripture, and you will see that the "Scripture does not 
 teach this at all 
 
 "The INVISIBLE CHRIST," Christ was VISIBLE be- 
 cause He had a BODY. 
 
 Heb. 10: 5, "Sacrifice and offering thou wouldest not, 
 but a BODY HAST thou prepared me." 
 
 Rom. 7 : 4. "Ye also are become dead to the law by the 
 BODY OF CHRIST." 
 
 1 Peter 2 : 24, "Who his own self bare our sins in His 
 OWN BODY on the tree." 
 
 The statement above makes a distinction between Jesus 
 and Christ. It makes Jesus the HUMAN MAN ; Christ THE 
 divine IDEA. But! the Scripture teaches that this is not 
 true. 
 
 1 John 2:1, "We have an advocate with the Father, 
 JESUS CHRIST the righteous." 
 
 Matt. 1 : 16, "JESUS, WHO IS CALLED THE CHRIST." 
 
 Acts 18:5, "Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified 
 to the Jews that JESUS WAS CHRIST." 
 
 Acts 18: 28, "For he mightily convinced the Jews, and 
 that publickly, shewing by the Scripture that JESUS WAS 
 CHRIST." 
 
 According to the quotation above, "Jesus disappeared" 
 at his death, and ceased to exist, Whereas "Christ continu- 
 ed to exist." The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ went to 
 the Father. 
 
 Acts 7: 55, "Stephen, being full of the Holy Ghost, 
 looked steadfastly into Heaven, and saw the glory of God, 
 and JESUS STANDING on the right hand of God." 
 
 Heb. 4: 14, "Seeing then that we have a great high 
 priest, that is passed into the heavens, JESUS the Son of 
 God." 
 
 P. 316. L. 19, "Jesus demonstrated Christ; he proved 
 that Christ is the divine idea of God, — the Holy Ghost, or 
 Comforter." 
 
 Christ was not the HOLY GHOST. He said to His 
 disciples, John 16: 7, "For if I go not away; the Comforter 
 will not come unto you ; but if I depart, I will send Him un- 
 to you."

John 14: 16, "And I will pray the Father, and He shall 
 give you another COMFORTER, that he may abide with 
 you forever." 
 
 John 15: 26. "But when the COMFORTER IS COME, 
 whom I WILL SEND UNTO YOU FROM THE FATHER,— 
 HE SHALL TESTIFY OF ME." 
 
 P. 30. L. 5, "Bora of a woman, Jesus' advent in the flesh 
 partook partly of Mary's earthly condition, although He 
 was endowed with the Christ, the divine Spirit, without 
 measure." 
 
 The Scripture teaches that Jesus was not ENDOWED 
 with the Christ, but Jesus was the Christ. 
 
 1 Tim. 2: 15, "The Man CHRIST JESUS." 
 
 Matt. 1: 16, "JESUS, who is CALLED CHRIST." 
 
 Acts 18: 5, "Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified 
 to the Jews that Jesus WAS CHRIST." 
 
 Acts 17:3, "That this Jesus whom I preach unto you, 
 IS CHRIST." 
 
 P. 473, L. 12, "Jesus is the name of the man who, more 
 than all other men, has PRESENTED CHRIST, the true idea 
 of God, healing the sick and sinning and destroying the 
 power of death. JESUS IS THE HUMAN MAN, and 
 CHRIST IS THE DIVINE IDEA, hence the duality of Jesus 
 Christ," 
 
 Here she contradicts the Scripture, which teaches very 
 distinctly that JESUS CHRIST is the ONE SAME person, 
 and not two as Mrs. Eddy says. Hear the testimony of the 
 Scripture. 
 
 1 Cor. 2: 2, "For I determined not to know anv thing 
 among you, save JESUS CHRIST, and him crucified."

 thee shall be called THE SON OF GOD." If Jesus was the 
 Son of God, how then could He have FALSE BELIEF? See 
 how her statement is proved to be untrue. 
 
 John 1 : 17, "Grace and TRUTH CAME BY JESUS 
 CHRIST." 
 
 74th, Edition, P. 84. "Jesus IS NOT THE CHRIST." 
 
 1 Tim. 2: 15, "The Man CHRIST JESUS."

 Christian Science, you REJECT the BIBLE. If you accept 
 the teaching of the BIBLE, you reiect Christian Science. 
 You CANNOT believe them both. Which will it be?

 coming is Christian Science." 
 
 The Bible says the second coming of Christ, is the 
 coming of HIMSELF.

 According to Christian Science, the Scripture would 
 read. "The Lord Himself shall descend from a DIVINE 
 STATE OF MIND," or more correctly, "Christian Science 
 shall descend from a divine state of mind." 
 
 Again, Rev. 1 : 7, "He cometh with clouds." But Mrs. 
 Eddy says, "Clouds are evil thoughts." Then this should 
 read, "Behold ; he cometh with EVIL THOUGHTS." Again, 
 Zach. 14: 4, "And His feet shall STAND IN THAT DAY, 
 UPON THE mount of 01ives.' , He has feet. Has Christian 
 Science feet? His feet shall stand upon the MOUNT of 
 OLIVES. Christian Science feet stood in Boston. Mount 
 of Olives is in the East before Jerusalem ; Boston, is on the 
 Boston harbor, Mass. Again, Zach. 13: 6, "And one shall 
 say unto him, What are these wounds in thine hands? Then 
 he shall answer, Those with which I was wounded in the 
 house of my friends." They will see HANDS. They will 
 see WOUNDS in his hands. They will ask about those 
 wounds, and He will tell them of whom He received them. 
 The testimony of the Bible is that the second coming of 
 Christ, is PERSONAL, VISIBLE, and CORPOREAL, and 
 cannot be Christian Science.

CHAPTER III 
 
 THE HOLY SPIRIT 
 
 P. 55. L. 27, "In the words of St. John; 'He shall give 
 you another comforter, that he may abide with you forever,' 
 THIS COMFORTER I UNDERSTAND TO BE DIVINE 
 SCIENCE." 
 
 We shall prove by the Scripture that the COFFORTER 
 is not divine Science. First. The Holy Spirit or Comforter 
 TESTIFIES OF CHRIST. John 15: 26, "But .when the Com- 
 forter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, 
 even the Spirit of truth, which procedeth from the Father, 
 HE SHALL TESTIFY OF ME," while Christian Science 
 DENIES the Christ. .."P. 316. L. 19, "Christ is the divine 
 IDEA OF GOD." Second, The Holy Spirit, or Comforter 
 teaches the PERSONALITY of Christ, Rom. 7 : 4, "Ye also 
 are become dead to the law by the BODY OF CHRIST.' , 
 1 Pet. 2: 24, "Who His own self bear our sins in His own 
 BODY on THE TREE." John 1 : 34, "And I saw, and bear 
 record that this (Jesus) is THE SON OF GOD." Christian 
 Science denies the PERSONALITY of Jesus Christ, and 
 teaches that He is only an IDEA. P. 29. L. 26, "The 
 CHRIST dwelt FOREVER AN IDEA in the bosom of the 
 Father," P. 316. L. 19, "Jesus proved that Christ is the 
 DIVINE IDEA OF GOD." The Scripture proves these 
 statements of Mrs. Eddy to be untrue. Third, The Holy 
 Spirit or Comforter comes to CONVICT OF SIN, John 16: 
 8, "And when He is come, He will CONVICT the world of 
 sin." Christian Science, says there is no sin, P. 447. L. 22, 
 "THERE IS NO SIN." According to Christian Science, the 
 Holy Spirit came to do some thing that cannot be done, for 
 if there IS NO SIN, how could the Holy Spirit CONVICT 
 OF SIN. Fourth, The Holy Spirit or Comforter, never 
 speaks of Himself, John 16: 13, "Howbeit when he the 
 spirit of truth is come, he will guide you into all truth ; for 
 he shall NOT SPEAK OF HIMSELF, but whatsoever he

shall hear, that shall hie speak;" while Christian Science 
 speaks of nothing but itself. If you have ever attended one 
 of their mid-week meetings, and listened to their testimonies, 
 they are all to the wonder workings of Christian Science. 
 Seldom, if ever do you hear the name of Christ Jesus men- 
 tioned in a Christian Science meeting. If the statement, 
 P. 127. L. 29, "SCIENCE- IS THE COMFORTER," is true, 
 according to the Scripture, it would NEVER SPEAK OF 
 ITSELF. John 16: 13, "for He SHALL NOT SPEAK OF 
 HIMSELF/' 
 
 P. 271. L. 20, "Our Master said, 'But the Comforter 
 shall teach you all things,' WHEN THE SCIENCE OF 
 CHRISTIANITY APPEARS, it SHALL LEAD YOU INTO 
 ALL TRUTH." 
 
 The Bible does not agree with this statement, but says, 
 in John 14: 26, "But the COMFORTER, which is the HOLY 
 GHOST— He shall teach you all things." Here the Bible 
 plainly declares that the Comforter IS THE HOLY GHOST, 
 and that this HOLY GHOST WILL TEACH ALL THINGS, 
 and not "SCIENCE OF CHRISTIANITY," as taught by Mrs. 
 Eddy. The Holy Spirit, or Comforter is sent from the 
 Father, (God) John 15: 26, "Whom I will send unto you 
 from the Father," said Jesus. Christian Science teaches 
 that God is only a principle, P. 331. L. 18, "God is DIVINE 
 PRINCIPLE." How could Jesus ascend to "principle?" 
 and has "PRINCIPLE" the Comtorter? If not, how then 
 could Jesus send him from principle? You will notice that 
 the "comforter of Christian Science" comes from "principle" 
 and testifies of "IDEA." But the Comforter of the Christian 
 and the Bible comes from GOD, THE FATHER, and testi- 
 fies of Christ. John 15: 26, "But when the Comforter is 
 come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, — he shall 
 testify of me." 
 
 P. 127. L. 29, "SCIENCE IS THE COMFORTER 
 WHICH leads into all truth." 
 
 Science is not the comforter, as we have shown by the 
 Scripture. 
 
 P. 562. L. 1. "John saw in those days the spiritual IDEA 
 as the Messiah, who would baptize with the HOLY GHOST, 
 
 —DIVINE SCIENCE/' 
 
 How any honest person can read the above quotation 
 into Scripture, is beyond all reach of reason. Hear what 
 the Scripture says. 
 
 John 1 : 29, "The next day John SEETH JESUS coming

unto him, and saith, Behold the LAMB OF GOD, which tak- 
 eth away the sin of the world." 
 
 John SAW JESUS. Can you SEE an IDEA? JESUS 
 WAS WALKING. Can an IDEA WALK? John says 
 JESUS was THE LAMB OF GOD, not a SPIRITUAL IDEA. 
 
 P. 84. L. 28, "ALL WE CORRECTLY KNOW OF 
 SPIRIT comes from God, and is LEARNED THROUGH 
 CHRIST AND CHRISTIAN SCIENCE." 
 
 If all we CORRECTLY know of SPIRIT, is learned 
 through CHRIST and Christian Science, Then the testimony 
 of Christ is final, for the Spirit never SPEAKS of Himself, 
 John 16: 13, "Howbeit, when he the Spirit of truth is come, 
 he will guide you into all truth ; for HE SHALL NOT SPEAK 
 OF HIMSELF." The testimony of Christ ALWAYS repre- 
 sents the Holy Spirit as a PERSON, and therefore cannot be 
 Christian Science. John 14: 16, 17, 26. "And I will pray 
 the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that 
 HE may abide with you forever. Even the Spirit of Truth; 
 whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth HIM not, 
 neither knoweth HIM; but ye know HIM for HE dwelleth 
 -with you, and shall be in you, But the Comforter, which is 
 the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, 
 He shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your 
 remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you/' 
 
 P. 46. L. 30, "His students THEN RECEIVED THE 
 HOLY GHOST. Bv this is meant, — thev were roused to an 
 ENLARGED UNDERSTANDING OF DIVINE SCIENCE." 
 
 The Bible does not say, "they were roused to an en- 
 larged understanding of divine science," Mrs. Eddy says 
 this, and this CANNOT be found in the Bible. The Bible 
 says, Acts. 1 : 8, "Ye SHALL RECEIVE POWER, after that 
 the Holy Ghost is come upon you ; and ye shall be WIT- 
 NESSES UNTO ME." They received POWER, POWER to 
 WITNESS, and TESTIFY OF CHRIST, and not. "an EN- 
 LARGED UNDERSTANDING OF DIVINE SCIENCE," So 
 this quotation is not true. 
 
 Miscellanies Writings 1897, P. 55, "There may be those 
 who, having learned the power of unspoken thought, use it 
 rather to harm than to heal, and are using that power 
 against Christian Scientists. This great sin is the sin against 
 the Holy Ghost spoken of in Matt. 12: 31, 32." 
 
 Mrs. Eddy would make those who oppose her, and her 
 system of teaching, to be guilty of committing the unpar- 
 donable sin. Never before has sinful human being, more

flagrantly deified itself, than here making her teaching, 
 the work of the Holy Ghost. But surely no one will be 
 alarmed. Just remember that Mrs. Eddy has said, THERE 
 IS NO SIN," and that, "God did not make man capable of 
 sin," so there is no danger after all. 
 
 P. 565. L. 18, 'This immaculate idea, REPRESENTED 
 FIRST BY MAN, and according to the Revelatory LAST BY 
 WOMAN, will baptize with fire." 
 
 Here she means to teach, that SHE IS THE FEMININE 
 representative of the spiritual IDEA, (which she says is 
 Christ) That she will baptize with the Holy Ghost. Can 
 sin's delusion lead unregenerated human beings farther 
 than this? Here she ascribes the work of the Holy Spirit 
 to herself. If this is not blasphemy, will Christian Science 
 tell us what it is?

 Now which do you believe, the Bible account of crea- 
 tion, or Mrs. Eddy's plain contradiction of the Bible? 
 
 P. 545. L. 21, "The translators of the record of scienti- 
 fic creation entertained a false sense of being. They believ- 
 ed in the existence of matter, its propagation and power." 
 
 The Bible teaches there is matter. Gen. 1 : 1, "In the 
 beginning God created the heaven and the earth." 
 
 If God did not create it, who did? 
 
 Gen. 1 : 7, "And God made the firmament." 
 
 If God did not make the firmament, who did? 
 
 Gen. 1: 16, "And God made two great lights." 
 
 If God did not make the sun and moon, who did? 
 
 Gen. 1: 21, "And God created great whales, and every 
 living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth 
 abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after 
 his kind." 
 
 If God did not create these living things, who did?

 The teaching of this false prophetess is that God did 
 not Create the world as the Bible says He DID, in Gen. 1 : 1, 
 and in the following verses His creation is described, as the 
 EARTH, the HEAVENS, the SEA, the SUN and MOON and 
 STARS, the FISH of the sea, the BEASTS of the forest, the 
 FOWLS of the air, the green HERBS, the TREES of fruit, 
 and finally MAN. But the author of Christian Science in 
 the light of this Bible account and hundreds of other pas- 
 sages in Scripture, declares that, "God DID NOT CREATE 
 MATTER, that matter is an illusion of mortal mind/' Then 
 if it is an illusion of the mortal mind, then mortal mind ex- 
 ists, for there could not be an illusion of a thing that does 
 not exist, but she also declares that the,"MORTAL, MIND 
 IS AN ILLUSION." If God did not create the mortal mind, 
 who did? You will see here that Mrs. Eddy not only con- 
 tradicts herself, but the Bible, and yet she declares, "The 
 BIBLE IS MY SUFFICIENT GUIDE."

 Before we answer this statement, get another quota- 
 tion from Mrs. Eddy. 
 
 P. 497. L. 3. "As adherents of the truth, we take the 
 Inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal

 Please keep the above auotation in mind, and then hear 
 her say. "Man is CO-EXISTENT with God." Then God did 
 not CREATE man as the Bible says He did. Gen. 1 : 27, 
 "God CREATED MAN in His own image." How are you 
 going to harmonize these statements? 
 
 P. 644. L. 1, GOD IS THE ONLY BEING, and HIS RE- 
 FLECTION is man and the universe." 
 
 Here again note the contradiction. Christian Science 
 says, "Man is the reflection of God." The Bible says, Man 
 is the CREATION of God. Mrs. Eddy's man is a REFLEC- 
 TION. The Bible man "Is a CREATION." Gen. 1 : 27, "So

 P. 305. L. 27. .."Because man is the .reflection of his 
 Maker, he is NOT subiect to DEATH to BIRTH, GROWTH, 
 MATURITY, DECAY." 
 
 Did you ever hear such ridiculous teaching outside 
 Christian Science? What does the Bible say? Gen. 21 : 20, 
 "And God was with the lad, and he GREW." 
 
 Gen. 25 : 27, "And the boys GREW." 
 
 Exodus, 2: 10, "And the child GREW, and she brought 
 him to Pharoh's daughter." 
 
 P. 336. L. 28. "God and man CO-EXISTED and are 
 ETERNAL." 
 
 This is not true if the Bible is true. And she says, "She 
 takes the Bible as her only guide." Her statements here 
 would make men INCORPORAL, but the man of the Bible 
 is not an ethereal being, but a man of FLESH and BONES. 
 Gen. 2 : 7, "And the Lord God FORMED man out of the 
 dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath 
 of life." 
 
 This shows that man was not CO-EXISTENT with God, 
 but CREATED by God. It also shows that man is not an 
 ETHEREAL being, but a CREATED being. 
 
 P. 476. L. 13. "MORTALS are not fallen children of 
 God. THEY NEVER HAD A PERFECT STATE OF BE- 
 ING, which may subsequently be regained. They were from 
 the beginning of MORTAL HISTORY, "conceived in sin and 
 brought forth in iniquity." 
 
 Please note the contradiction here. On P. 447. L. 22. she 
 says, "Man cannot be a sinner because THERE is NO SIN." 
 and here she says, "man was conceived in sin and brought 
 forth in iniquity." Which of these shall we believe? and on 
 P. 345. L. 13, she says, "In this volume of mine, there are no 
 contradictory statements." 
 
 Now let me show you how she repudiates the account 
 as given in the Bible. She says, "They never had a perfect 
 state of being." How about God's statement. Gen. 1 : 27, 
 "God CREATED man in His own IMAGE." If Mrs. Eddy's 
 statement is true, God did not have a PERFECT IMAGE, 
 nor BEING. 
 
 In Gen. 1:31, "God saw everything that He had made, 
 and behold it was very good." Then God pronounced 
 something "very good" which did not have a perfect being, 
 and was brought forth in sin. Some thing wrong here. 
 
 P. 478. L. 30. "Mortal man is really a self -contradictory

phrase, for man is not mortal, neither indeed can be; man 
 is IMMORTAL/' 
 
 Again the contradiction between this and the preced- 
 ing quotation, in the quotation above she said, "Mortals 
 were conceived in sin." and here she declares that MORTAL 
 man does not exist. 
 
 Let the Bible speak here. 
 
 Job 4: 17, "Shall MORTAL man be more just than 
 God?" 
 
 Rom. 6: 12, "Let not sin reign in your MORTAL 
 bodies/ 
 
 Rom. 8: 11, "But — He that raised up Christ from the 
 dead shall also quicken your MORTAL bodies." 
 
 In the light of Scripture is Mrs. Eddy right when she 
 says man is not mortal? 
 
 Eight Edition, Vol 2. P. 147, "Science," — she means 
 Christian Science — "decides matter of the mortal body to 
 be NOTHING BUT A BELIEF AN ILLUSION/' 
 
 This does not agree with the Bible. 
 
 Rom. 6: 12, "Let not sin reign in your MORTAL 
 bodies/* 
 
 1 Cor. 15 : 54, "So when this corruptible shall have put 
 on incorruption and this MORTAL shall have put on im- 
 mortality." 
 
 It might be interesting just to read, the scripture as 
 Christian Science interpretation would make it. Notice 
 just a few here without being sacreligious, if you can. 
 
 Rom. 6 : 12, "Let not sin reign in your ILLUSION body. 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 54, So when this corruptible shall have put 
 on incorruption, and this BELIEF shall have put on AN IL- 
 LUSION. 
 
 Rom. 8: 11, But he that raised up Christ from the dead, 
 shall also quicken your ILLUSION. 
 
 P. 345. L. 13, "In this volume of mine, there are no con- 
 tradictory statements." 
 
 How are you to harmonize the statements quoted 
 above? Saying a thing is so, does not make it so. 
 
 P. 267. L. 8. "It is generally conceded that God is 
 Father, eternal, self-created, infinite. If this be so, then 
 FOREVER FATHER MUST HAVE HAD CHILDREN prior 
 to Adam. Hence man and the spiritual universe coexisted 
 with God/' 
 
 Here again she is drawing on her imagniation for facts. 
 There is not one word in the Bible teaching that God had

children such as we are before Adam was created. But 
 remember that she says she takes the Bible as her sufficient 
 guide. 
 
 P. 468. L. 8. ''Question, — What is the scientific state- 
 ment of being? Answer, — There is no life, truth, intelli- 
 gence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite MIND, and 
 it's infinite manifestation, for God is all-in-all, Spirit is God, 
 and man is His image and likeness, Therefore MAN IS NOT 
 MATERIAL: he is spiritual." 
 
 What saith the Scripture? 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 45, 49, "And so IT IS WRITTEN. The first 
 man Adam was made a living Soul; the last Adam was 
 made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which 
 is spiritual, but that which is natural ; afterward that which 
 is spiritual. The first man is of the EARTH, EARTHY: the 
 second man is the Lord from heaven. As is the Earthy, such 
 are they also that are earthy, and as is the heavenly such 
 are they also that are heavenly. And as we have BORN 
 the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the 
 heavenly." 
 
 Here the Scripture speaks for itself, and pointedly 
 contradicts Mrs. Eddy's statement just quoted above. Now 
 if you accept the teaching of Christian Science, you deny 
 the teaching of the Bible, and if you accept the teaching of 
 the Bible, you deny Christian Science.

CHAPTER VI 
 
 ATONEMENT 
 P. 44. L. 28, "His disciples BELIEVED JESUS TO BE 
 DEAD while HE was hidden in the sepulcher, WHEREAS 
 HE WAS ALIVE." 
 
 You will notice that I am going to prove by the words 
 of Jesus Himself, that He WAS DEAD, and that the dis- 
 ciples were not mistaken, but that Mrs. Eddy is teaching 
 that which is not true. 
 
 Rev. 1 : 8, "I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and 
 the ending, Saith the LORD, which is, which was, and 
 which is to come." Now read, Rev. 2: 8, "And unto the 
 Angel of the Church at Smyrna write; These things saith 
 the FIRST and the LAST, which WAS DEAD, and is alive/' 
 Now read Rev. 1: 5, "And from Jesus Christ, who is the 
 faithful witness, and the FIRST begotten of the DEAD." 
 Now read, Rev. 1: 18, "I am He that liveth and WAS 
 DEAD; and, behold I am ALIVE for evermore, Amen;" 
 This is final is it not? 
 
 P. 42. L. 24, "Jesus LET MEN THINK THEY HAD 
 KILLED THE body." 
 
 You will please notice the statement, "Jesus LET MEN 
 THINK he was dead." If he was not dead, and let men 
 think He was, then He was practicing deception, and fraud, 
 and was an arch deceiver. Mrs. Eddy maligns the charac- 
 ter of Christ when she so represents HIM. Take the testi- 
 mony of the Scripture here. 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 3, "For I delivered unto you first of all, that 
 I also received, how that Christ DIED for our sins, accord- 
 ing to the Scripture." 
 
 Rom. 5: 6, "For when we were yet without strength, 
 in due time, Christ DIED for the ungodly." 
 
 Rom. 5: 8, "But God commendeth His love toward us, 
 in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ DIED for US." 
 
 P. 46. L. 20, "Jesus, unchanged physical condition af- 
 ter what SEEMED TO BE DEATH." 
 
 The Bible says it was DEATH, not SEEMED TO BE 
 DEATH. 
 
 Rom. 14: 9, "For to this end, Christ both DIED and 
 ROSE, and revived, that He might be the Lord of the DEAD 
 and the LIVING." 
 
 Phil. 2: 8, "And being found in fashion as a man, he 
 humbled Himself and became obedient unto DEATH, even 
 the DEATH OF THE CROSS."

2 Cor. 5: 15, "And that He DIED for all, that they 
 which live, should not live unto themselves, but unto HIM 
 WHO DIED for them/' 
 
 P. 45. L. 32, "Jesus' students, not sufficiently advanced

 many wonderful works until they saw Him after His cruci- 
 fixion and learned THAT HE HAD NOT BEEN DEAD." 
 
 John says He was dead. John 19 : 33, "But when they 
 came to Jesus, and saw that He WAS dead already, they 
 braked not His legs." 
 
 Paul says He was DEAD. 1 Cor. 15: 3, " — How that 
 Christ DIED for our sins, according to the Scripture/' 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 12, 20, "Now if Christ be preached that He 
 rose from the DEAD, how say some among you that there 
 is no resurrection from the DEAD? But if there be no 
 resurrection of the DEAD, then is Christ not RISEN : And if 
 Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith 
 is also vain. Yea we are found false witnesses of God ; be- 
 cause we have testified of God that He RAISED UP 
 CHRIST; whom He raised not up, if so that the DEAD rise 
 not. For if the DEAD rise not, then is not Christ RISEN; 
 And if Christ be not RAISED, your faith is vain, ye are yet 
 in your sins. Then they also which are fallen asleep in 
 Christ are perished, But now IS CHRIST RISEN FROM THE 
 DEAD, and become the first fruits of them that slept." 
 
 Peter believed and taught that Jesus Christ DIED on 
 the cross. 
 
 1 Peter, 1:3, "Blessed be the God and Father of our 
 Lord Jesus Christ, which according to His abundant mercy 
 hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the RESUR- 
 RECTION of JESUS CHRIST FROM THE DEAD." 
 
 1 Peter 1: 21, "Who by Him do believe in God, that 
 RAISED HIM UP FROM THE DEAD." 
 
 1 Peter 3: 18, "For Christ also hath once suffered for 
 sin, the just for the uniust, that he might bring us to God, 
 being PUT TO DEATH IN THE FLESH." 
 
 Now in the face of this array of Scripture, Mrs. Eddy 
 says, "Christ's disciples believed Him to be dead/' but they 
 found out their mistake, and. "LEARNED THAT HE HAD 
 NOT DIED," If the disciples learned that Jesus had not 
 died, and continued to teach that HE HAD DIED, — as they 
 did until their death, then they continued to deceive the 
 people, as long as they lived ; and the New Testament is mis- 
 leading, for it reveals the fact of sin, and that Jesus Christ

-was CRUCIFIED, DEAD, BURIED m Josephs new tomb, 
 and the third day He rose from the DEAD. 
 
 P. 21. L. 6. "Christians do not continue to labor and 
 pr*v, expecting because of ANOTHER'S GOODNESS, SUF- 
 FERING, AND TRIUMPH, that they shall reach his har- 
 mony and reward." 
 
 P. 23. L. 23, "One kind of faith trusts one's welfare to 
 another. Another "kind of faith, understands divine love, 
 and how to WORK OUT one's own salvation, with fear and 
 trembling." 
 
 What saith the Scripture? 
 
 1 Peter 2: 24, "Who His own self bear OUR SINS IN 
 HIS OWN BODY on the tree, that we being dead to sins, 
 should live unto righteousness; by whose STRIPES YE 
 WERE HEALED." 
 
 Isa. 53: 5. "But He was WOUNDED for our transgres- 
 sions. He was BRUISED for our iniquities: the CHASTISE- 
 MENT of our peace was upon Him, and WITH HIS STRIPES 
 WE ARE HEALED." 
 
 Eph. 2: 8, 9, "For by grace are ye SAVED THROUGH 
 FAITH : and that not of yourselves ; it is the GIFT OF GOD; 
 not of works lest any man should boast." 
 
 Titus 3: 5, "Not by works of righteousness which we 
 have done, but according to His mercy He SAVED us." 
 
 Do you see by these numerous passages from the Bible, 
 there is a clear line of difference : and that Christian Science 
 plainly contradicts the Scripture? For the Bible teaches 
 that it is only because of ANOTHER'S SUFFERING and 
 DEATH upon the cross that this world has any hope of 
 Heaven. 
 
 Do not forget that there is no place in Christian Science 
 for the Atonement of Jesus Christ. According to the teach- 
 ing of Mrs. Eddy, there is no necessity for the Atonement. 
 She says. "Man NEVER SINNED. MAN COMMITTED NO 
 SIN." "Man is INCAPABLE OF SINNING." These are her 
 words. If this be true, the tragedy of Calvary was a great 
 mistake on God's part. Do not forget that Mrs. Eddy says, 
 "The Bible is her only sufficient guide," in formulating the 
 system of theology. 
 
 Her own words quoted in these chapters, positively 
 deny Jesus Christ as the savior of the world, and make of 
 none effect the DEATH of the Son of God upon the cross. 
 The denial of the Lord that bought us, is very clearly stated 
 in the quotations referred to.

If Peter had written the following words on purpose 
 to describe Mrs. Eddy's religion, he could not have been 
 more to the point. 
 
 2 Peter, 2: 1-3, "But there were false prophets also 
 among the people, even as there shall be false teachers 
 among you, who prively shall bring in damnable heresies, 
 even DENYING THE LORD that bought them, and bring 
 upon themselves swift destruction, — And many shall follow 
 their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth 
 shall BE EVIL SPOKEN OF. — And through coveteousness 
 shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you." 
 
 8th Edition, Vol 2. P. 143, "JESUS NEVER RANSOM- 
 ED MAN BY PAYING THE DEBT THAT SIN INCURRED; 
 Whoever sins must suffer." 
 
 This is a strange statement indeed, for she says,P. 447. 
 L. 22, "THERE IS NO SIN," Some contradiction here, and 
 on page 345, L. 13, she says, "In this volume of mine, there 
 are no contradictory statements." A right minded person 
 could not believe her statements. But let the Scripture 
 sneak here 
 
 Eph. 1: 7, "In whom we HAVE REDEMPTION 
 THROUGH HIS BLOOD, the FORGIVENESS of SINS." 
 
 Col. 1, 14, "In whom we HAVE REDEMPTION 
 THROUGH HIS BLOOD, even the FORGIVENESS of SINS." 
 
 P. 23, L. 3, "ONE SACRIFICE HOWEVER GREAT, IS 
 INSUFFICIENT TO PAY THE DEBT OF SIN. That God's 
 wrath should be vented upon His Son, is divinely unnatural. 
 Such a theory is man-made. ..The scientific theory is, that 
 suffering is an error of sinful sense which truth destroys, 
 and that eventually both sin and suffering will fall at the 
 feet of everlasting love." 
 
 On P. 447 L. 22, she says, "THERE IS NO SIN." How 
 can it fall at the feet of love ? 
 
 Every statement in the Scripture concerning the sacri- 
 fice of Christ, is a denial of the quotation just made. Hear 
 the Scripture. 
 
 Heb. 7: 27, "Who needeth not daily, as those high 
 priests, to offer up sacrifice, first for his own sins, then for 
 the people; for this he DID ONCE, when he offered him- 
 self." 
 
 Heb. 9: 12, 14, 26, 28, "Neither by the blood of goats 
 and calves, but by HIS OWN BLOOD He entered in ONCE 
 into the Holy place, having obtained ETERNAL REDEMP- 
 TION for us.— How much more SHALL THE BLOOD OF

CHRIST, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself 
 without spot unto God, purge your conscience from dead 
 works to serve the living God. — Now ONCE in the end of 
 the world hath he appeared TO PUT AWAY SIN by the 
 SACRIFICE OF HIMSELF.— So Christ was ONCE OFFER- 
 ED to bear the SINS of many." Heb. 10: 14, "By ONE 
 OFFERING HE HATH PERFECTED FOR EVER THEM 
 THAT ARE SANCTIFIED." 
 
 Now against these plain statements of the Bible, place 
 Mrs. Eddy's statement, "ONE SACRIFICE however great is 
 insufficient to pay the debt of sin," and all the while keep 
 in mind that she claims that, the "Bible is her sufficient 
 guide." 
 
 P. 25. L. 6, "THE MATERIAL BLOOD OF JESUS WAS 
 NO MORE EFFICACIOUS TO CLEANSE FROM SIN 
 WHEN IT WAS SHED UPON THE ACCURSED TREE, 
 THAN WHEN IT WAS FLOWING IN HIS VEINS AS HE 
 WENT ABOUT HIS FATHER'S BUSINESS." 
 
 There is no atoning blood in Mrs. Eddy's plan of re- 
 demption, but there is in God's plan. Which do you accept? 
 To accept one, is to reject the other. 
 
 Heb. 9: 22, "R. V. And according to the law, all things 
 are cleansed with blood, and without the SHEDDING OF 
 BLOOD, there is NO REMISSION OF SIN."- 1 Peter 2: 24, 
 "Who His OWN SELF BARE OUR SINS in His own body on 
 the tree." Col. 1 : 20, "And having made peace through the 
 BLOOD OF HIS CROSS." Heb. 9: 13-14, "For if the blood 
 of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of an heifer sprinkling 
 the unclean, sanctifieth to the purifying of the flesh; How 
 much more shall the BLOOD OF CHRIST, who through the 
 eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge 
 your conscience from dead works to serve the living God." 
 
 Rev. 5: 9, "For thou wast SLAIN, and hast REDEEM- 
 ED us to God by the BLOOD." 
 
 Unity of Good. P. 78, "In Science (Christian Science) 
 CHRIST NEVER DIED — the fleshly Jesus seemed to die, 
 though FLESH NEVER HAD LIFE." 
 
 Then the Bible teaches a false-hood, and is not to be 
 believed. Hear the Scripture here. 
 
 Rom. 5: 8, "God commendeth His love toward us, in 
 that, while we were yet sinners, CHRIST DIED FOR US." 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 3, "CHRIST DIED FOR OUR SINS." 
 
 2 Cor. 5: 15, "And that HE DIED for all, that they

 Remember that on P. 447. L. 22, she says, "THERE IS 
 NO SIN," here she says, "SIN IS NOT FORGIVEN, we can- 
 not escape its penalty." Which shall we believe? But let 
 the Scripture speak here, and you will see that it does not 
 agree with the teachings of Mrs. Eddy. 
 
 1 John 1:9, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and 
 just to FORGIVE US OUR SINS." 
 
 Numbers 30: 5, "The Lord shall FORGIVE her." 
 
 Psm. 86: 5, "For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to 
 FORGIVE; and plenteous in mercy unto all that call upon 
 thee." 
 
 Jer. 31 : 34, "For they shall all know me, from the least 
 of them to the greatest of them, saith the Lord ; for I WILL 
 FORGIVE THEIR iniquities; and I will REMEMBER THEIR 
 SIN NO MORE." 
 
 Math 6:14, " — For if ye forgive men their trespasses, 
 your heavenly Father WILL ALSO FORGIVE YOU;" 
 
 Our Lord taught that we could be FORGIVEN, when 
 He taught his disciples to pray in Luke 11: 4, "And FOR- 
 GIVE US OUR SINS. ,, 
 
 74th Edition, P. 328, "Atonement requires constant 
 SELF-IMMOLATION." 
 
 The Bible says we RECEIVE IT, and do not REQUIRE 
 IT, nor ATONE for ourselves, but RECEIVE IT. 
 
 Rom. 5: 11, "We also joy in God, through our Lord 
 Jesus Christ, by whom we have now RECEIVED the A- 
 TONEMENT." 
 
 We RECEIVE IT THROUGH OUR LORD JESUS 
 CHRIST and in verse (10) we learn how we get the 
 ATONEMENT. 
 
 Rom. 5: 10, "If, when we were enemies we were RE- 
 CONCILED to God by THE DEATH of His Son." 
 
 The Bible says we were RECONCILED to God, not by 
 SELF-IMMOLATION, but by THE DEATH OF HIS SON. 
 
 P. 23. L. 3, "It would be divinely unnatural for God to 
 vent His wrath upon His Beloved Son; that such a doctrine 
 is a theory man-made." 
 
 In the Word of God it is written. 
 
 Psm. 88 : 7, "Thy wrath LIETH HARD UPON ME."

 These statements of the Scripture, show that the state- 
 ment made by Mrs. Eddy is not according to the Bible, 
 therefore not true. 
 
 The Bible not only tells us that God did VENT His 
 wrath on His Son, it also tells us why He did it. 
 
 John 3 : 16, "For God so LOVED THE world, that He 
 GAVE HIS ONLY BEGOTTEN Son, that whosoever believ- 
 eth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life." 
 
 P. 24 L. 20, "Does erudite theology regard the CRUCI- 
 FIXION OF JESUS chiefly as PROVIDING A READY 
 PARDON FOR ALL SINNERS who ask for it and are will- 
 ing to be forgiven? THEN WE MUST DIFFER FROM 
 THEM." 
 
 All who believe the Bible, believe that the CRUCIFIX- 
 ION of JESUS provides a ready pardon for ALL SINNERS 
 WHO ASK for it, and are willing to be FORGIVEN, because 
 the Bible says so. 
 
 Rom. 10: 13, "For WHOSOEVER SHALL CALL UP- 
 ON THE NAME OF THE LORD, shall be SAVED." 
 
 John 3 : 16, "For God so loved the world that He GAVE 
 His only begotten Son, that WHOSOEVER believeth on Him 
 should not perish, but have EVERLASTING life." But Mrs. 
 Eddy says, "then we must differ from them," and you must 
 always remember they claim to "take the Bible as their 
 sufficient guide." Here she not only differs from them, but 
 from the BIBLE. 
 
 We have proved every statement quoted here from 
 Christian Science to be untrue, if the Bible is true. Now 
 which do you accept? To accept Christian Science, you 
 reject the Bible; To accept the Bible, is to reject Christian 
 Science.

 FORGIVENESS 
 
 P. 6. L. 1, "We cannot escape the penalty due for sin." 
 
 Notice the contradictions here. On P. 447, L. 22,

 339. L. 28. "TO GET RID OF SIN through Science, is to,

 quotation above, she says, "We cannot escape the penalty

 The Scripture teaches that we can ESCAPE the penalty

 Does she presume to know more about this than Jesus 
 Christ, who taught His disciples to pray, Math 6: 12, "And

 IN PRAYER, believing, ye shall receive." If you ask for 
 SIN to be cancelled, it will be done. 
 
 1 John 1 : 9, "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and

 P. 6. L. 7, "Calling on Him to forgive our work badly 
 done or left undone, implies a vain supposition that we have 
 nothing to do but to ask pardon, and that afterwards we

 Mrs. Eddy cannot name one single Church that teaches 
 any such thing as she states in the quotation above, that we 
 ask pardon, then to be "free to repeat the offence," but 
 we believe what the Scripture says here.

 FORGIVENESS, so the statement of Mrs. Eddy must be

 world to bestow on the righteous their full reward. ..It is 
 useless to suppose that the wicked can gloat over their of- 
 fences to the last moment and then be suddenly pardoned 
 and pushed into heaven." 
 
 Here is a new system of religion which teaches, "Sin is 
 not forgiven, but must be PUNISHED on this, and the other 
 side of the grave." And yet she dares to call it "Christian." 
 Any teaching that does not conform to the teaching of 
 Jesus Christ, cannot be called "Christian." And every state- 
 ment of Mrs. Eddy quoted here, is a CONTRADISTION of 
 the SCRIPTURE, But you must keep in mind she says, P. 
 497. L. 3, "As adherents of truth, we take the inspired word 
 of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life." I am 
 sure that you will not believe this statement, when you com- 
 pare it with the Bible. 
 
 The Bible teaches that SIN is forgiven, because the 
 PUNISHMENT was LAID ON CHRIST. Isaiah 53 : 5, "He 
 was WOUNDED for our TRANSGRESSIONS, He WAS 
 BRUISED for OUR INIQUITIES; the chastisement of our 
 peace was upon Him; and WITH HIS STRIPES WE ARE 
 HEALED." 
 
 Isaiah 1: 18, "Come now, let us reason together, saith 
 the Lord; though your sins be as SCARLET, they shall be 
 as WHITE AS SNOW; though they be red like crimson, 
 they shall be as WOOL." 
 
 I am sure the reader will have trouble in harmonizing 
 the statements of Mrs. Eddy. She says, "THERE IS NO 
 SIN" then she says, "Sin must be punished." Then "We 
 cannot escape the penalty due sin." then she says, "To get 
 rid of sin through Science, is to divest sin of any supposed

mind or reality." and then she says, "All that we term sin 
 is a mortal belief." then she says, "It is impossible for 
 sinners to receive their full punishment this side of the 
 grave." then she says, "No final judgment awaits mortals." 
 
 and "There is no hell." And all the while you must keep in 
 mind that she says, "In this volume of mine there are no 
 contradictory statements." To the thinking person, there 
 is nothing but contradictions.

 We are sure that she never learned this in the Bible, 
 but she does not claim that she did, but in Science, for the 
 Bible teaches the reverse of this. And you should keep in 
 mind that on P. 497. L. 3, she says, "As adherents of truth, 
 we take the inspired word of the Bible as our sufficient guide 
 to eternal life." The material is the channel through which 
 the real man works. Before the body puts into practice the 
 sinful act, the Soul of man gives its consent, so God says, in 
 Ezk. 18: 4. "The SOUL that SINNETH, IT shall die." 
 
 P. 482. L. 1, "The substitution of the word SENSE for 
 SOUL gives the exact meaning in a majority of cases." 
 
 Let us trv a few and see how they will read. Ezk. 18: 
 4. "The SENSE that sinneth, it shall die." Math. 16; 26", 
 "What shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, 
 and lose his own SENSE — ? Or what shall he give in ex- 
 change for his— SENSE"? 
 
 Rev. 20: 4, "I saw the SENSE of them that were be- 
 headed." 
 
 P. 482. L. 6, "The proper Use of the word Soul can al- 
 ways be gained by substituting the word God where the 
 deinc meaning is required." 
 
 Let us try a few passages. Psm. 16: 10, "Thou wilt not 
 leave my — GOD — in hell." Math. 10: 28, "Fear not them 
 which kill the body, but are not able to kill the — GOD — ; 
 but rather fear him which is able to destroy both — GOD —

 Psychologists recognize in a man a trinity of power — 
 Physical, Spiritual, Mental; the Bible also recognizes the 
 same thing. Body, Soul, and Spirit. 
 
 1 Thes. 5: 23, "I pray God, your whole SPIPwIT, SOUL, 
 and BODY be preserved."

CHAPTER IX 
 
 REFORM 
 
 P. 285. L. 23, "By interpreting God as a corporal Savior 
 but not as a saving PRINCIPAL, we shall CONTINUE to 
 seek Salvation through PARDON AND NOT THROUGH 
 REFORM." 
 
 According to the above quotation, Mrs. Eddy's Christ, 
 or the Savior of Christian Science, is not a corporal Savior, 
 but a "SAVING PRINCIPLE." Her Christ was never born 
 of the Virgin Mary. Her Christ is not the Christ of the 
 Bible, and her plan of salvation is not the one recorded in 
 the Bible. There is no place for PARDON in her so-called 
 religion, because there is nothing to be pardoned. Note 
 the following statements, and we will prove this. 
 
 P. 71. L. 2. "EVIL HAS NO REALITY." 
 
 P. 330. L. 29. "EVIL IS NOTHING." 
 
 Let the Bible speak here. Our Savior is a corporal 
 being. 
 
 Math. 1: 21, "And she shall bring forth a SON, and 
 thou shalt call HIS name JESUS; for HE shall SAVE HIS 
 people from their SINS." 
 
 Luke 1: 31, 32, " — Behold, thou shall conceive in thy 
 womb, and bring forth a SON, and shalt call HIS name 
 JESUS.— He shall be great, and shall be called the SON of 
 the highest: and the Lord God, shall give unto Him the 
 throne of HIS father David." 
 
 Luke 2:7, "And she brough forth her first born Son, 
 and wrapped HIM in swaddling clothes, and laid Him in a 
 manger, because there was no room for them in the Inn." 
 
 Mrs. Eddy says, "We shall continue to seek salvaltion 
 through PARDON and not THROUGH REFORM/' 
 
 We seek salvation through PARDON, because it is the 
 Bible way, and ONLY way. 
 
 Jer. 33: 8, "—I will PARDON ALL their iniquities, 
 whereby they have sinned, and whereby they have trans-

 Ish. 55 : 7, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the un-

 gracious and merciful."

 Here is how she perverts the Scripture. She says, 
 "Christ's purpose was to reconcile man to God." Hear what 
 the Bible says. 
 
 2 Cor. 5: 18, 19, "And all things are of God, who hath 
 reconciled us TO HIMSELF BY JESUS CHRIST, and hath 
 given to us the ministry of reconciliation ; To wit, that God 
 WAS IN CHRIST RECONCILING the world UNTO HIM- 
 SELF." 
 
 P. 6. L. 3, "Divine Love corrects and governs man. 
 MEN MAY PARDON, but Divine PRINCIPLE alone RE- 
 FORMS THE SINNER." 
 
 According to Christian Science teaching, God does not 
 pardon, divine PRINCIPLE does this. Now take the testi- 
 mony of the Bible here. 
 
 Ish. 55: 7, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the 
 unrighteous man his thoughts; and let him return unto the 
 Lord, and He will have mercy, and to our God for He will 
 abundantly PARDON." 
 
 Jer. 33 : 8, "I Will PARDON ALL their iniquities/' 
 
 According to the above quotation, "DIVINE PRIN- 
 CIPLE alone REFORMS THE SINNER." Christian Science 
 claims nothing more than "REFORMING THE SINNER," 
 but Jesus said to Nichodemas, in John 3: 3, 7, " — Verily, 
 verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be BORN again he 
 cannot see the kingdom of God." — Marvel not that I said 
 unto thee, Ye MUST be BORN AGAIN." 
 
 P. 291. L. 12. "Universal salvation rests on PROGRES- 
 SION and PROBATION and is unattainable without them." 
 
 The Bible teaches, that God offers Salvation to all who 
 call upon His name. Rom. 10: 13, "For whosoever shall 
 CALL upon the name of the Lord shall be saved." 
 
 John 5 : 24, " — He that heareth my word, and believeth 
 on Him that send me, hath everlasting life." 
 
 No PROGRESSION or PROBATION here, which do 
 you believe?

P. 291. L. 23, "As death findeth mortal man, so shall 
 he be after death, UNTIL PROBATION AND GROWTH 
 shall effect the needed change." 
 
 What will mortal man be changed to? According to 
 Mrs. Eddv's teachings, man is PERFECT, and IMMORTAL. 
 P. 428. L. 22. "MAN IS, not shall be, PERFECT AND IM- 
 MORTAL." What will his PERFECTION be changed to? 
 Again, P. 336. L. 10, "Man is COEXISTENT and ETERNAL 
 WITH GOD." If he is COEXISTENT with God, what will 
 he be when he is changed, as the above quotation says he 
 will be. We think Mrs. Eddy would have trouble in ex- 
 plaining these statements. In the above quotation she is 
 teaching a salvation through suffering in this life, and after 
 death sufficient to REFORM the SINNER. Her Salvation 
 is REFORMATION. The Bible Salvation is REGENERA- 
 TION. 
 
 John 3: 6. 7. "That which is born of the flesh is flesh; 
 and that which is BORN of the SPIRIT is SPIRIT,— Marvel 
 not that I said unto thee, Ye MUST BE BORN AGAIN." 
 
 2 Cor. 5 : 17. " — If any man be in Christ he is a NEW 
 creature, old things are passed away ; behold all things are 
 become new." 
 
 She holds out the hope of probation after death, but 
 she cannot produce one single passage of Scripture to justi- 
 fy her contention, for as death finds us, so will eternity find 
 us. 
 
 Luke 16: 26, " — Between us and you there is a great 
 gulf fixed ; so that they which would pass from hence to you 
 cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from 
 thence." 
 
 Heb. 9: 27, " — It is appointed unto man once to die, 
 but after this, (after death) the judgment." 
 
 2 Cor. 5: 10, "For we must all appear before the judg- 
 ment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things 
 done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it 
 be good or bad." 
 
 P. 404. L. 26. "Healing the sick and REFORMING THE 
 SINNER are one and the same thing in Christian Science." 
 
 Here is a new scheme of salvation. No CONFESSION 
 of Sin. No REPENTANCE. No CALLING ON GOD for 
 mercy. No NEW BIRTH. No REGENERATION. Just 
 REFORM, that is all there is to it. Then Jesus did not know 
 when he said to Nichodemas, John 3: 7, 3, "Ye MUST, 
 be BORN again. — Except a man be BORN AGAIN

he CANNOT see the Idngdom of God." 
 
 In order to understand her theology, one must under* 
 .•stand her system of healing ; this we have explained in the 
 -chapter on healing, — quoting her own words, "Sickness is 
 an illusion." prayer to God is not necessary, faith in God 
 not required, By mmd alone sick are healed. Then accord- 
 ing to her own -statements ouoted above, the sinner is RE- 
 FORMED the same way. "Sin is an illusion of the mortal 
 mind." 
 
 P. 447. L. 22. "A sinner is not reformed merely "by as- 
 suring him that he cannot he a sinner because there is no 
 SIN." 
 
 The Bible teaches there is SIN. 
 
 Rom. 3 : 23. "—All have SINNED." 
 
 1 John 1:10. "If we say that we have not SINNED, 
 we malre him a liar." 
 
 This is exactly what Mrs. Eddy teaches, and you have 
 the Bible name for her. 
 
 Psm. 32 : 5, "I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine 
 iniquity have I not hid. I said I will confess my transgres- 
 sions unto the Lord ; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my 
 sin." 
 
 Then again, the Bible teaches that the healing of the 
 sick is one thing, and forgivine sin is another. 
 
 Psm. 103: 3. "Who FORGIVETH all thine iniquities: 
 who healeth all thy diseases." 
 
 P. 327. L. 24. "But HOW SHALL WE REFORM THE 
 MAN who has more animal than moral courage? REASON 
 IS THE MOST active human faculty. Let that inform the 
 sentiments and awaken the man's dormant sense of moral 
 obligation, and by degrees he will learn the nothingness of 
 the pleasures of human sense, and the grandeur and bliss 
 of a spiritual sense, which silences the material corporeal. 
 THEN HE NOT ONLY WILL BE SAVED, BUT IS SAVED.'' 
 
 Mrs. Eddy claims the Bible as her only guide, but the 
 writer of these lines will present any person $1,000.00 who 
 will find the quotation above or anything that has any 
 semblance of it in the Bible. The only use Mrs. Eddy has 
 for the Bible is to deny absolutely, and contradict EVERY 
 FUNDAMENTAL doctrine of the Bible. No where does 
 she speak of the NEW BIRTH, but of REFORMATION. 
 Confession of sin is not necessary, for "there is no sin." If 
 there is "no sin" there is nothing to be repented of, and 
 nothing to be saved from, then we need NO SAVIOR. If we

need no Savior, then the mission of Jesus Christ to the world 
 was a mistake on God's part. John 3: 16, 'God so loved 
 the world that HE GAVE His only begotten Son, that who- 
 soever believeth in Him should not perish, but have ever- 
 lasting life." And Mrs. Eddy maligns God when she so 
 represents HIM. 
 
 Take the testimony of the Scripture here. 
 
 Rom. 3: 23, " — All have SINNED, and come short of 
 the glory of God." 
 
 Prov. 28: 13, "But whoso confesseth and forsaketh 
 shall find mercy." 
 
 1 John 1 : 9, "But if we CONFESS our sins, He is faith- 
 ful and just to FORGIVE us our sins." 
 
 Please notice how Mrs. Eddy "reforms the man who 
 has more animal than moral courage." She does not point 
 him to the Lion of the tribe of Judah, that can break every 
 chain. Nor to the Christ who can cast all demons out of 
 men, but "REASON" will do the work. "Let REASON IN- 
 FORM the sentiments and awaken the man's dormant sense 
 of moral obligation, then he not only will be saved, but is 
 SAVED." 
 
 REASON is deified, Christ is dethroned. 
 
 Acts 4: 12, "Neither is there SALVATION in any oth- 
 er ; for there is none other name under heaven given among 
 men, whereby we must be SAVED." 
 
 Mrs. Eddy says REASON will save the moral degener- 
 ate. 
 
 The Bible declares Christ is the ONLY ONE who can 
 save any one. 
 
 Which do you believe? If you accept Christian Science 
 you reject the Bible. 
 
 If you accept the Bible, you reject Christian Science. 
 WHICH WILL it be?

 P. 7. L. 8, "Audible prayer is impressive; BUT DOES

 The Bible says it does. The experience of the unnum-

 James 5: 16, "CONFESS your faults one to another, and 
 PRAY ONE FOR another. The effectual fervent prayer of 
 a righteous man AVAILETH MUCH." 
 
 Job 42 : 10, "And the Lord TURNED THE CAPTIVITY 
 of Job, when he prayed for his friends ; also the Lord gave 
 Job TWICE AS MUCH as he had before." 
 
 P. 7, L. 27, "The danger of prayer is it MIGHT LEAD 
 US INTO TEMPTATION. By it we may become INVOL- 
 UNTARY HYPOCRITES." 
 
 Here Christian Science gives the lie to Jesus Himself, 
 for He taught His disciples to pray. 
 
 Math. 6 : 12, 13, "Forgive us our tresspasses" and "Lead

 Luke 18: 1, "And He spake a parable unto them to this 
 end, that man ought ALWAYS TO PRAY." 
 
 According to Christian Science, the Lord Jesus was 
 teaching men to do something that would lead them into 
 temptation, and make them INVOLUNTARY HYPO- 
 CRITES. Thus Mrs. Eddy sets her teaching above that of 
 Jesus Christ. 
 
 Acts 6: 4, "But we will give ourselves continually to 
 prayer." 
 
 Here we find the disciples praying CONTINUALLY; 
 that which Mrs. Eddy says might make HYPOCRITES of

 Here the Bible teaches that the HIM is BODILY, which 
 you all know means CORPORAL. 
 
 Then God the Father Himself speaking- to the Son in 
 Heb. 1 : 8, says, "But unto the Son He saith, Thy throne O 
 God is forever and ever." 
 
 P, 5. L. 22, "Prayer is NOT TO BE USED AS A CON- 
 FESSIONAL to cancel sin. Ff prayer nourishes the belief 
 THAT SIN IS CANCELLED, and that MAN FS MADE BET- 
 TER merely by praying PRAYER FS AN EVIL." 
 
 I need not comment on this statement, but hear what 
 God in His word s&ys about this. 
 
 Numb. 5: 6, 7, "Speak unto the children of Israel- 
 When a man or woman shall COMMIT any SIN that men 
 commit, to do a trespass against the Lord, and that person 
 be guilty; Then they SHALL CONFESS THEIR SIN which 
 they have done/' 
 
 Neh. 1 : 6, "Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine 
 eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, 
 which I pray before thee now, DAY and NIGHT, for the 
 children of Israel thy servants, and CONFESS THE SINS of 
 the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee/' 
 
 Psm. 32: 5. "I acknowledge my sin unto thee, and mine 
 iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will CONFESS MY TRANS- 
 GRESSIONS unto the Lord ; and thou FORGAVEST the IN- 
 IQUITY of my SIN/' 
 
 Prov. 28: 13, "But whoso CONFESSETH and forsaketh 
 them shall find mercy/' 
 
 1 John 1 : 9, "If we CONFESS our SINS, He is faithful 
 and just to FORGIVE us our sins. ,, 
 
 Here you see that the teaching of the Bible contradicts 
 what Mrs. Eddy says about prayer. 
 
 Eighth Edition, Vol. 2. P. 124. "Prayer to a PERSONAL 
 GOD is a hinderance; petitioning a PERSONAL DEITY is 
 a miscomprehension of the SOURCE and MEANS OF ALL 
 GOOD and BLESSEDNESS, therefore it cannot be benefi- 
 cial."

I need not comment on these quotations. If there is 
 NO PERSONAL GOD, then prayer is of no avail. To whom 
 shall we pray? You must pray to a PERSON. The God 
 of the Bible is a PERSON, having all the attributes of 
 PERSONALITY, and the Bible teaches men to pray to Him. 
 
 Luke 6 : 12, "And it came to pass in those days, that He 
 (Jesus) went out into a mountain to PRAY, and continued 
 all night in PRAYER TO GOD." 
 
 Here Jesus prayed to a PERSONAL GOD. 
 
 Phil. 4 : 6, " — In everything by PRAYER and supplica- 
 tion with thanksgiving, let your request be made known un- 
 to God." 
 
 Jer. 29 : 12, "Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall 
 go and PRAY UNTO ME, and I will hearken unto you." 
 
 Jer. 33 : 3, "Call unto ME, and I will answer thee, and 
 show thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not/ 
 
 Here God tells us that the source and means of blessing 
 is GOD, AND OBTAINED by CALLING UPON GOD. 
 
 Jam. 1 : 17, "Every GOOD gift and EVERY PERFECT 
 gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of 
 lights.' , 
 
 P. 12. L. 1, "The prayer of faith shall save the sick," 
 says the Scripture, What is this healing prayer? A mere 
 request that God will heal has NO power to gain more of 
 the divine presence than is always at hand. The BENEFI- 
 CIAL EFFECT of such prayer for the sick is ON THE HU- 
 MAN MIND, making it act more powerfully on the body 
 THROUGH A BLIND FAITH IN GOD." 
 
 This shows that Christian Science does not depend on 
 the prayer of faith to heal the sick, nor does it look to God 
 to do the healing, but TO THE HUMAN MIND, ACTING 
 ON THE BODY. Let the Bible speak here. 
 
 1 Kings 13: 6, "And the king answered and said unto 
 the man of God, Entreat now the face of the Lord thy God, 
 and PRAY FOR ME, that my hand may be RESTORED me 
 again. And the man of God besought the Lord, and the 
 king's hand was restored him again, and became as it was 
 before." 
 
 Here the man of God PRAYED to GOD for the King, 
 and the HAND WAS restored, by PRAYER, and not by 
 HUMAN MIND ACTING ON THE BODY. 
 
 James 5: 15, "The PRAYER OF FAITH SHALL SAVE 
 THE SICK." 
 
 1910 Edition, Chap. 7. P. 179. "Science can heal the

sick who are absent from their healer, as well as those pres- 
 ent, since space is no obstacle to MIND." 
 
 This shows that Christian Science calls their healing, 
 MIND, not Faith. 
 
 Again, This is very strange that SCIENCE CAN HEAL 
 SOMETHING THAT DOES NOT EXIST, for in 1913 Edi- 
 tion, P. 278. L. 28. "All that we term sickness and death IS 
 AN ILLUSION. DOES NOT EXIST 
 
 Miscellanies, P. 308. "Intensely contemplating person- 
 ality impedes spiritual growth. — I earnestly advise all Chris- 
 tian Scientists to remove from their observation or study 
 the PERSONAL SENSE OF ANY ONE." 
 
 Thus you see that Christian Scientists cannot pray ; for 
 prayer is the address of A PERSONAL human being to a 
 PERSONAL God, on the merits of a mediatory Personal 
 Savior directed by a Personal Holy Spirit. 
 
 Eph. 2: 18, "For through Him (Christ) we both have 
 access by one Spirit unto the Father." 
 
 Job 22 : 27, "Thou shalt make thy PRAYER unto HIM, 
 and HE shall hear thee." 
 
 Psm. 65: 2, "O thou that hearest prayer, unto THEE 
 shall all flesh come." 
 
 Jer. 32: 18, 19, "Thou showest loving kindness unto 
 thousands, and recompensest the iniquity of the fathers into 
 the bosom of their children after them: the GREAT, the 
 MIGHTY GOD, the LORD of HOSTS, is His name. Great 
 in council, and mighty in work; For thine EYES are open 
 upon all the ways of the sons of men ; to give every one ac- 
 cording to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings.'' 
 
 2 Sam. 22: 7, "In my distress I called upon the Lord, 
 and CRIED to my God; and He DID hear my voice out of 
 His temple, and my cry DID enter into HIS ears." 
 
 Here we find the Bible does not agree with Christian 
 Science. Which do you believe? 
 
 P. 12. L. 6. "Prayer to a corporal God effects the sick 
 LIKE A DRUG, which has NO EFFICACY OF ITS OWN, 
 but borrows it FROM HUMAN FAITH AND BELIEF." 
 
 You will please notice here that she does not even claim 
 to heal by prayer to God, for the God of the Bible is a cor- 
 poral God, but BY HUMAN FAITH AND BELIEF." Very 
 different from the healing of the Bible, which says, "The 
 PRAYER of FAITH shall save the sick." Jas. 5: 15. 
 
 1910 Edition, Chap. 1. P. 15. "In order to pray aright 
 we must CLOSE THE LIPS and SILENCE the material

sense. In the quiet sanctuary of earnest longing WE MUST 
 DENY SIN, and plead God's allness." 
 
 Notice the first part of the statement. "In order to 
 pray aright we must CLOSE THE LIPS and silence the 
 MATERIAL SENSES." here let the Bible speak. 1 Cor. 1 : 
 2, "Unto the Church of God which is at Corinth, to them 
 that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with 
 all that in every place CALL UPON THE NAME of the 
 Lord." 
 
 Rom. 10: 13, "For whosoever shall CALL upon the 
 name of the Lord shall be saved." 
 
 Zach. 13 : 9, " — They shall CALL upon my name, and 
 I will hear them ; I will say, It is my people ; and they shall 
 say, The LORD is my God/' 
 
 And the last part of the quotation is just as absurd when 
 compared with the word of God. 
 
 Christian Science says, "we must DENY SIN," but the 
 Bible says, 
 
 1 John 1 : 9, "We must CONFESS SIN," 
 
 Prov. 28: 13, "But whoso CONFESSETH." 
 
 Christian Science takes direct issue here with the 
 Bible. Which do you believe? 
 
 P. 12. L. 22. "THE COMMON CUSTOM of praying for 
 the recovery of the sick finds HELP IN BLIND BELIEF, 
 whereas HELP SHOULD COME FROM THE ENLIGHT- 
 ENED UNDERSTANDING." 
 
 Help from THE ENLIGHTENED UNDERSTANDING," 
 and not from God. Are you surprised at this statement? 
 You should not be. While Christian Scientists glibly tell 
 you they believe in prayer, it is not the belief that the Bible 
 commands, nor the child of God exercises. 
 
 Vol. 2. P. 127. "Asking God to pardon sin IS A VAIN 
 REPETITION such as the heathen use." 
 
 You will please keep in mind that she says, P. 497, L. 3. 
 "As adherents of truth, we take the inspired word of the 
 Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life." by the side of 
 this quotation above, place the scripture, and see if she 
 takes the inspired word of the Bible. 
 
 Psm. 25: 11, "For thy name's sake, O LORD, pardon 
 mine iniquity." 
 
 Luke 11: 4, 9, "Jesus taught that we were to ask God 
 to pardon," "And— FORGIVE us our SINS, — And I say un- 
 to you, ASK and it shall be given you." 
 
 In denying prayer, Christian Science denies the Bible

 Christian Science and the Bible have nothing in com- 
 mon on this issue of prayer. 
 
 A Christian Scientist cannot consistently pray to God 
 to deliver him from evil, for there is no evil, He says. 
 
 A Christian Scientist cannot pray to God to deliver him 
 from sin, for there is no sin, He says. 
 
 A Christian Scientist cannot pray to God to deliver him 
 from Sickness, for there is no sickness, HE SAYS.

CHAPTER XI 
 HEALING 
 
 What is the explanation of the so-called healing of 
 Christian Science? and how do these practitioners effect the 
 cures ascribed to them? To answer these questions, we need 
 only to give their theory, "That it is the RESULT of MIND 
 acting on MIND to dispell the illusion of sickness." I propose 
 here to prove from Mrs. Eddy's own works and words, that 
 her system of healing is not the healing as taught in the New 
 Testament, and as believed by the followers of the Christ. 
 We will show that PRAYER and FAITH are eliminated. 
 That God is a minus quantity. We will show that her so- 
 called healing is "MENTAL HEALING" and not Divine heal- 
 ing as the Bible teaches, and as Christians believe. 
 
 Mrs. Eddy is so sure of her position, that she says her 
 system of healing PROVES her system of theology to be 
 corect. For she says, 
 
 P. 547. L. 3. "IF ONE OF THE STATEMENTS OF THIS 
 BOOK IS TRUE, EVERY ONE MUST BE TRUE. YOU CAN 
 PROVE FOR YOURSELF, dear reader, the SCIENCE OF 
 HEALING, and so acsertain if the author has given you the 
 correct interpretation of Scripture." 
 
 Now, if a system of healing proves the correctness of a 
 person's theology, then the allapathy, the homeopathy, the 
 osteopathy, the chiropractic, the starvation doctor and all 
 other schools of healing can make the same claim that Mrs. 
 Eddy makes. If Mrs. Eddy's system of healing proves her 
 interpretation of Scripture to be correct, then how about all 
 the other forms of healing, which are many, and as great 
 cures claimed for them as Mrs. Eddy claims for Christian 
 Science. 
 
 Let us name here some of the different kinds of cures 
 that are in vogue today. 
 
 1. Prayer and faith cure; which are based upon faith 
 in God and the Virgin.

2. Relic cures of all sorts; which are based upon faith 
 in the Holy emblems, seen and touched. 
 
 3. Mind cures ; effected by the realization of the power 
 of mind over matter. 
 
 4. Spiritualistic cures; effected by faith in departed 
 spirits. 
 
 5. Mesmeric cures ; effected by supposed fluid of mag- 
 netic influence passing from healer to patient. 
 
 Is the theology of these systems of healing correct be- 
 cause they perform cures? Every one of them claim they 
 can produce as many cases of healing as Christian Science 
 can. 
 
 In the story of the delivery of the children of Israel out 
 of the land of Egyptian bondage, as told in Exodus 7 to 11, 
 the magicians did some of the things that Moses, God's ser- 
 vant did, but only in two of the very minor plagues were they 
 able to imitate God's servant, then their methods were a 
 failure, and so with the modern "magicians" today, are able 
 to imitate the healing performed by God's servants, but only 
 where the effect of mind over matter will bring results, and 
 NO further can they go. And as E. A. Kimball, a noted 
 Christian Scientist lecturer, said in his lecture at Blooming- 
 ton, Illinois, "I will go farther, and say that seventy-five or 
 eighty percent of all the cases of sickness that occur, would 
 recover spontaneously if they were left alone, if they had no 
 treatment, no doctor, no change of air, no electricity, or any 
 thing else. Seventy-five or eighty percent of the different 
 ailments, if left alone would disappear if nothing were 
 done." Thus the testimony of Christian Scientists, is that 
 they do not heal, that the persons would get well, if left 
 alone. 
 
 P. 109. L. 11. "For three years after my discovery, I 
 sought the solution of this problem of MIND HEALING — I 
 won my way to absolute conclusion through divine revela- 
 tion, reason, and demonstration." 
 
 She does not even claim that her system of healing is 
 divine healing, but calls it, "MIND HEALING." 
 
 P. 107. L. 3, "God has been graciously preparing me 
 during many years for the reception of this final revelation 
 of the absolute divine principle of SCIENTIFIC MENTAL 
 HEALING." 
 
 Here she calls it, "MENTAL HEALING." 
 
 P. 445. L. 27. "There is great danger in teaching MIND 
 HEALING indiscriminately."

Here she calls it, ''MIND HEALING." 
 P. 447. L. 5. "In MENTAL HEALING." 
 
 Here she calls it "MENTAL HEALING." 
 
 P. 424. L. 12. "In medical practice objections would be 
 raised if one doctor should administer a drug to counteract 
 the working of a remedy prescribed by another doctor. It 
 is equally important in METAPHYSICAL PRACTICE that 
 the MINDS which surround your patient should not act 
 against vour influence." 
 
 Here she calls it "METAPHYSICAL PRACTICE. 
 Where is any faith cure here? 
 
 P. 420. L. 28. "If it became necessary to startle MOR- 
 TAL MIND to break the dream of suffering, vehemently tell 
 your patient that he must awake. — Tell him that he is suf- 
 fering only as the insane, from A FALSE BELIEF." 
 
 Note the difference here in the methods of healing. 
 
 Christian Science professes to heal, by making the per- 
 son believe a lie, that is, they are SUFFERING FROM A 
 FOUL BELIEF. The Bible way is different. It recognizes 
 the fact, and through the prayer of FAITH, as we find in 
 James 5: 14, 15, "Is any sick among you? let him call for 
 the elders of the Church ; and let them pray over him, — and 
 the PRAYER of FAITH shall save the sick." 
 
 P. 421. L. 11, "If a crisis occurs in your treatment, you 
 must treat the patient LESS FOR THE DISEASE and more 
 for the MENTAL DISTURBANCE." 
 
 This shows that her work is on the MIND and not the 
 DISEASE. 
 
 In Retrospection and Introspection Mrs. Eddy uses the 
 expression, MIND CURE, and MIND HEALING twenty 
 times and implies it more than five hundred other places, 
 while she never mentions FAITH CURE, except as she dis- 
 cards it at once. 
 
 P. 421. L. 18. "When the supposed suffering is gone, 
 from the MORTAL MIND there can he no pain." 
 
 This shows that her work is on the mind and not on the 
 disease. Then where there is a real disease, Christian 
 Science can do nothing, it works only where there is SUP- 
 POSED SUFFERING, and so when you suffer, never call a 
 Christian Scientist practitioner. 
 
 P. 396. L. 9. "AVOID SPEAKING ALOUD the name of 
 the disease." Here she instructs her followers not to speak 
 ALOUD the name of disease. 
 
 P. 349. L. 49. "Not understanding Christian Science,

the sick usually have little faith in it till they feel its bene- 
 ficient influence. THIS SHOWS THAT FAITH IS NOT THE 
 HEALER IN SUCH CASES.'' 
 
 What do you think of this statement, where she says, 
 "THIS SHOWS THAT FAITH IS NOT THE HEALER IN 
 SUCH CASES.*' There could be nothing clearer, than that 
 the so-called healing of Christian Science, is not the HEAL- 
 ING of THE BIBLE, for the healing of the BIBLE, is always 
 BY FAITH. 
 
 On P. 419. L. 8. she says, "If your patient from any 
 cause SUFFERS A RELAPSE, MEET THAT CAUSE MEN- 
 TALLY and courageously." 
 
 P. 419. L. 22. "A RELAPSE CANNOT REALLY OC- 
 CUR in mortal or so-called mortal mind." 
 
 Now hear the contradiction, P. 419. L. 31. "If it is found 
 necessary to TREAT AGAINST RELAPSE." 
 
 First it is RELAPSE, then there IS NO SUCH THING 
 AS RELAPSE, and finally, if it is FOUND NECESSARY to 
 treat against relapse. How can these statements be har- 
 moniized, and she says, "In this book of mine there are no 
 contradictions." If these are not contradictions, then what 
 are they? 
 
 P. 12. L. 1. "The prayer of faith shall save the sick, says 
 the Scripture. What is this healing prayer? A mere re- 
 quest that God will heal has no power to gain more of the 
 divine presence than is always at hand. The beneficial ef- 
 fect of such prayers for the sick, is ON THE HUMAN 
 MIND, making it act more powerfully ON THE BODY 
 THROUGH A BLIND FAITH IN GOD." 
 
 Here she says, "The beneficial effect of prayer is, ON 
 THE HUMAN MIND, making it act MORE POWERFULLY 
 ON THE BODY THROUGH A BLIND FAITH IN GOD," 
 and yet she dares to call it divine healing. Here she quotes 
 the Scripture and then follows it with her statement, which 
 is not what the Scripture says at all. Which do you believe? 
 
 Mrs. Eddy claims that Christian Science heals diseases 
 just as Jesus did; if this is so, there is no sickness it cannot 
 heal. Now listen to the following quotations and see if they 
 even profess to do so. 
 
 P. 401. L. 27. "Until the advancing age admits the 
 EFFICACY and SUPREMACY OF MIND, it is better for 
 Christian Science to leave surgery and the adjustment of 
 broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon." 
 On page 402 she says, "Christian Science is always the most

skillful surgeon, but surgery is the branch of its healing 
 which will be last acknowledged." 
 
 Now notice her statement in the following quotation, 
 and see if you could harmonize this with the healing of the 
 Bible. 
 
 P. 464. L. 13. "If from any injury or from any cause, a 
 Christian Scientist WERE SEIZED with PAIN, so VIO- 
 LENT" — You must remember she has been telling us there 
 patients believe there IS NO PAIN. Surely this is the very 
 IS NO PAIN, "that he could not treat himself MENTALLY, 
 the SUFFERER could call a surgeon, who would give him 
 a HYPODERMIC injection, then, when the BELIEF of pain 
 was lulled, he could handle his own case MENTALLY, thus 
 we prove all things (and) hold fast that which is good." 
 
 Let us note her statements. "If a Christian Scientist 
 were seized with PAIN." She has all the while been trying 
 to make them say there WAS NO PAIN, and here she tells 
 them they "They might be seized with pain, and could not 
 treat Themselves MENTALLY, the SUFFERER could call a 
 surgeon, who would give him a HYPODERMIC injection, 
 and then when the BELIEF of pain was killed." 
 
 Please remember they HAD the PAIN, for she says, 
 "they MIGHT be seized WITH PAIN." then when the HY- 
 PODERMIC injection lulls the BELIEF of pain; I suppose 
 when the hypodermic injection killed the PAIN, the patient 
 could believe it was gone, but they could not believe it was 
 gone until it was killed by the hypodermic, for until the hy- 
 podermic injection KILLED IT, it WAS THERE and even a 
 Christian Scientist must BELIEVE, but it is the business of 
 the Christian Scientist healers to make their SUFFERING 
 essence of DECEPTION and HYPOCRACY. Call a surgeon 
 for your self but as Mrs. Eddy tells her healers, "If it be- 
 comes necessary to STARTLE MORTAL MIND to break the 
 dream of SUFFERING, vehemently TELL YOUR PATIENT 
 that he must be awaked, that he is suffering as the insane, 
 FROM A FALSE BELIEF." Thus you see they go to the 
 surgeon for themselves, but it is their business to deceive 
 poor SUFFERING humanity. 
 
 P. 12. L. 16. "Prayer to a corporal God effects the sick 
 like a drug, which has no efficacy of its own, but BORROWS 
 ITS POWER FROM HUMAN FAITH and BELIEF." 
 
 Here she tells us that prayer to a corporal God, has NO 
 power of its own, but BORROWS its POWER FROM HU- 
 MAN FAITH and BELIEF,

Now let me call your attention to some of the foregoing 
 quotations. 
 
 1 "This shows that FAITH IS NOT THE HEALER in 
 such cases. '' 
 
 2 "PRAYER has NO EFFICACY of its own." 
 
 3 "The beneficial effect of such prayer for the sick IS 
 ON THE MORTAL MIND." 
 
 4 "Through a BLIND FAITH IN GOD." 
 
 5 "PRAYER borrows its power from HUMAN FAITH 
 and BELIEF." 
 
 When you hear Christian Scientists talking about wait- 
 ing upon God, just remember the above statements made by 
 their author. 
 
 If you have observed closely the quotations from Mrs. 
 Eddy's book, you will have noticed that the founder of 
 Christian Science refers to her healing, as, "Scientific 
 MENTAL HEALING," "MIND HEALING," "MENTAL 
 PRACTICE," "METAPHYSICAL PRACTICE," The MOR- 
 TAL MIND must be STARTLED, "Tre»t your patient for 
 the MENTAL DISTURBANCE," "SURROUND YOUR PA- 
 TIENT with SYMPATHETIC minds." 
 
 She does not even presume here to call her system of 
 so-called healing divine healing, we are quoting from the 
 last edition of her book, and we suppose will be the last 
 revision, because she IS DEAD, and surely no one else will 
 dare to revise this so-called divine revelation. 
 
 P. 461. L. 15. "If you believe you are sick, SHOULD 
 YOU SAY, I AM SICK? NO." 
 
 How do you like this statement? Why should they 
 call a surgeon to kill a pain? Here Mrs. Eddy sets her 
 authority above that of the Bible, for the Bible says there 
 is sickness, and SAYS SO. 
 
 Mark 1 : 30, "But Simon's wife's mother lay SICK with 
 a FEVER." 
 
 Ish. 38: 1, "In those days was Hezekiah SICK unto 
 death." 
 
 Deut. 28 : 22, "The Lord will smite thee with consump- 
 tion, and with a FEVER, and with an INFLAMATION, and 
 with EXTREME BURNING." 
 
 Now do you suppose it would have changed the fact, 
 to have denied they were sick, as Christian Science teaches 
 its followers? The Bible recognizes the fact of SICKNESS, 
 but Christian Science denies it, which do you believe?

 Let the Bible speak here. 
 
 James 1 : 17, "EVERY GOOD and perfect gift is from 
 above, and cometh down from the FATHER of lights." 
 
 Now, if Christian Scientists do not pray to a personal 
 God, to whom do they pray? The God of the Bible is a 
 person, having all the attributes of personality. The God 
 of the Bible is the source of all GOOD, and when we pray 
 to Him, it is not with BLIND FAITH, nor is the only results 
 of our praying, a, "beneficial effect upon the human mind," 
 as the prayer of the Christian Science is. 
 
 How very different are the words of Jesus from those 
 of Mrs. Eddy; Christ said to Peter, Mark 11: 22 "HAVE 
 FAITH IN GOD." Again Math. 9: 22, Where the woman 
 with the issue of blood pushed her way through the crowd, 
 and said, "If I can but touch the hem of His garment I shall 
 be made whole, and Jesus said to her, THY FAITH HATH 
 MADE THEE WHOLE." In Math. 15. 28, Jesus said to the 
 Syro-phenecian woman, "O woman great is thy FAITH ; be 
 it unto thee even as thou wilt, and her daughter was made 
 whole from that hour." In Luke 7: 50, Jesus said to the 
 woman who annointed His feet with oil, "Thy FAITH hath 
 saved thee " 
 
 In Heb. 11: 16, we read, "Without FAITH it is impos- 
 sible to please God, for he that cometh to God must believe 
 that HE is, and that HE is the rewarder of them that dili- 
 gently seek Him." 
 
 In Math. 9 : 29, 30, Jesus touched the eyes of the two 
 BLIND men and said, "According to YOUR FAITH be it 
 unto you, and their eyes were opened." 
 
 If there is no place for an active FAITH in a real per- 
 sonal God in Mrs. Eddy's system, there is no room for such 
 faith in the teachings of Jesus. 
 
 In Mark 9: 14-29, To the father of the boy who had a 
 dumb spirit^ whom the disciples had failed to relieve, Jesus 
 said, "If thou canst BELIEVE, all things are possible to him 
 that BELIE VETH. And when He was come into the house, 
 His disciples asked Him privately, Why could not we cast 
 him out? and He said unto them, this kind can come forth 
 by nothing, but by PRAYER and FASTING." 
 
 If you have noticed the quotations by Mrs. Eddy who 
 is the founder and teacher of this so-called healing system, 
 you will have discovered that it has NO place in it for

PRAYER, and FASTING, and FAITH, and yet the author 
 of Science and Health claims to be performing cures as 
 Jesus did. 
 
 P. 402. L. 15, "In Science no breakage nor dislocation 
 can really occur. You say that accident, injuries, and dis- 
 ease kills men, but this is not true." 
 
 According to her own statement here, there is NO 
 SICKNESS. If there is no disease, or sickness, how then 
 did she perform all her wonderful cures as reported in her 
 book. 
 
 Why does she advise her followers to leave the adjust- 
 ment of broken bones to surgery, if there is no such thing in 
 Science. "P. 401. L. 27, "Until the advancing age admits the 
 EFFICACY and SUPREMACY OF MIND, it is better for 
 Christian Science to leave surgery and the adjustment of 
 broken bones and dislocations to the fingers of a surgeon." 
 
 Some contradiction here, How are you going to har- 
 monize these statements? 
 
 Now does Christian Science heal as Jesus did? If the 
 Bible is true, there can be but one answer, most assuredly, 
 NO. 
 
 Jesus' healings were IMMEDIATE CURES, and He 
 NEVER FAILED. Do Christian Scientist practioners per- 
 form their cures the first visit? or do they continue to visit 
 their patients as long as they have money? NO PAY, NO 
 PRAY is their slogan. The writer can cite cases where 
 practitioners have said, "The reason the persons did not re- 
 cover, was they were not willing to pay for the service." 
 that an EVIL SPIRIT came upon Saul." 
 
 Edward A. Kimball a noted Christian Science lecturer, 
 in an address given at Bloomington, 111., (Chautauqua) said 
 as follows, "We find that when we get hold of a person who 
 does not want to pay, he is one of the hardest people to 
 heal. The fact is, it is SIN. — the sin of selfishness, of greed ; 
 unwillingness to give credit where credit is due. This will- 
 ingness to get something for nothing is a SIN, and Christian 
 Scientist would be helping to perpetuate that sin if they 
 went and healed people for nothing." Every turn they 
 make they contradict themselves and their teaching. Hear 
 what Mrs. Eddy says, P. 278. L. 28, "All that we term SIN, 
 is a mortal belief." 
 
 P. 244. L. 3, "Sickness, SIN, and death is an ILLUSION, 
 the MIRAGE of ERROR." 
 
 Again, do Christian Scientists never fail? You can

answer this question, just look about you and recall the 
 failures. BROKEN bones and DISLOCATIONS were the 
 same to Him as any other ailment. But Christian Science 
 practitioners have been told to leave that to the FINGERS 
 of a SURGEON. Did Jesus ever call a surgeon? He heal- 
 ed all who came to Him. Has any one ever known of a 
 Leper being healed by a Scientist? Have any eyes which 
 were born blind been opened? Have any dead been rais- 
 ed? Have any devils been cast out? Have any lunatics 
 been cured? Have any ears been restored which were cut 
 off? I ask, has any person ever known of such cases? I 
 do not ask, have you heard of such cases, but do you know 
 of such cases? I have heard of such supposed healings, 
 and I am frank to tell you, that of the many that I have in- 
 vestigated to the end, I have not found ONE single case. 
 
 Christian Science healings are not immediate cures, if 
 cures at all, and this is performed by the effect of MIND 
 over matter, as thev themselves admit. 
 
 "MENTAL HEALING, MIND HEALING, MENTAL 
 PRACTICE, METAPHYSICAL PRACTICE, MORTAL 
 MIND MUST BE STARTLED, the patient must be treated 
 for the MENTAL DISTURBANCE." Until they heal any- 
 thing and every thing, they must not make the claim that 
 they perform these healings as Jesus did, for the undeceiv- 
 ed person will not believe it. 
 
 In conclusion, let me say, to warn Christians lest they 
 be beguiled away from the simplicity that is in Christ. Let 
 such as would abide in the truth, give head to the clear de- 
 nials of Scripture indicated in the quotations above, set in 
 contrast with the word of God; and then the warnings of 
 St. Paul, 1 Tim. 6: 29, to avoid, "THE OPPOSITIONS OF 
 SCIENCE FALSELY SO CALLED, WHICH SOME PRO- 
 FESSING HAVE ERRED CONCERNING THE FAITH," 
 And when this science talks about Jesus Christ's "SUPPOS- 
 ED LIFE IN MATTER" let them remember that some in the 
 days of St. John spoke precisely the same way, — "AGNOS- 
 TTCS'V-or SCIENTISTS— as they were called, and that of 
 them the Apostle wrote when he said in 2 John 7, "For 
 many deceivers are entered into the world, WHO CONFESS 
 NOT THAT JESUS CHRIST IS COME IN THE FLESH, 
 This is a deceiver and an antichrist."

 on me." Here SIN is not believing on Jesus CHRIST. Not

 SIN." In the first quotation she says SIN exists, in the other 
 she says, THERE is NO SIN.

 is to DIVEST sin of any supposed mind or reality." 
 
 The way Christian Science gets rid of SIN is just DI- 
 VEST it of any supposed mind or reality. All that is ne- 
 cessary for the thief, the murderer, the adulterer, the har- 
 lot, the liar, the fornicator, the idolater, the covetous, the 
 drunkard, the extortioner, the reviler to do, is to de- 
 clare there is NO SIN. But the Bible way of setting rid of

 How can this be true when the Bible says, Ezk. 18: 4, 
 "The SOUL that SINNETH it Shall die." 
 
 1910 Edition, Chap. 8. P. 207, L. 1, "These evil beliefs 
 often called EVIL SPIRITS; but these evils are NOT 
 SPIRITS, for there is NO EVIL spirit." 
 
 The Bible teaches there are EVIL spirits.

 Who added the finishing touch to man? The Bible

 after our likeness; and let them have dominion over the 
 fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the 
 cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing 
 that creepeth upon the earth. So God created man in His 
 OWN IMAGE, in the IMAGE OF GOD CREATED He 
 him." And David says, Psm. 51 : 5, "In SIN DID my mother 
 conceive me." 
 
 Christian Science not only claims that man is not a 
 Sinner, but that, "MAN IS INCAPABLE OF SIN." and that 
 God could not make man capable of SIN." 
 
 Then the Bible teaches what is not true, for it teaches 
 very plainly that man is capable of sin, and does sin. 
 
 Rom. 3: 23, "ALL HAVE SINNED." 
 
 Psm. 51: 4, "Against Thee, Thee only HAVE I SIN- 
 NED." 
 
 If Man is INCAPABLE of SIN, then God commanded 
 man not to do that which He knew they could not do, as we 
 find in Gen. 3 : 3-6, "But of the fruit of the tree which is in 
 the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of 
 
 it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die, And when the 
 
 woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was 
 pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one 
 wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and DID EAT, and 
 gave also unto her husband, and HE DID EAT." Here we 
 see that man did do what God said to them they must not 
 do, and in Verse 12 the man said, "The woman which tho*u 
 gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I DID 
 EAT." Now which do you believe? 
 
 1910 Edition, Chapter 4. P. 70. L. 9, "The supposition 
 that there are GOOD and EVIL spirits, is a MISTAKE."

Here we see that the Bible says there are EVIL SPIR- 
 ITS. Which is right the Bible, or Christian Science? You 
 must keep in mind that Mrs. Eddy says, "We take the in- 
 spired word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal 
 life." This is not true, for her words positively contradict 
 the plain words of the Bible. 
 
 P. 481. L. 29, "In Science we learn that it is the MA- 
 TERIAL sense, not the Soul, which sins; and it will be found 
 that it is the SENSE OF SIN which is lost, and not a SINFUL 
 SOUL." 
 
 Here we agree that she learned this IN SCIENCE, we 
 are very sure that she never learned it in the Bible, for this 
 is not what the Bible teaches, and yet she says, "she takes 
 the inspired word of the Bible as her sufficient guide," so 
 now hear what the Bible says about this. 
 
 Ezek. 18: 4, "The SOUL that SINNETH, IT, (that is 
 the soul) SHALL DIE." 
 
 This states very clearly that it is the SOUL that shall 
 DIE, and not the SENSE of SIN. Nothing plainer. Which 
 do you believe? 
 
 Miscellanies, P. 63, "If there is no sin, why did Jesus 
 come to save sinners? Jesus came to SEEK AND TO SAVE 
 THEM FROM FALSE BELIEF." 
 
 The Bible says Jesus came to SAVE from SIN, and not 
 FROM FALSE BELIEF. 
 
 Math. 1 : 21, "And she shall bring forth a Son, and thou 
 shalt call His name JESUS : For He shall SAVE his people 
 FROM THEIR SINS." 
 
 Luke 19: 10, "For the Son of man is come to seek and 
 SAVE that which was lost" 
 
 1 Tim. 1 : 15, "This is a faithful saying, — That Christ 
 Jesus came into the world to SAVE SINNERS." 
 
 John 1 : 29, "The next day John seeth Jesus coming un- 
 to him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which TAKETH

 Here the Bible contradicts the teaching of Christian 
 Science. Which do you accept? 
 
 P. 356. L. 25, "Does divine love commit a fraud on hu- 
 manity by making man incline to sin, and then punish him 
 for it?" 
 
 Man is a FREE MORAL AGENT, with power to choose. 
 This is clearly shown in God's attitude toward man in the 
 garden of Eden. Gen. 3 : 3, "But of the fruit of the tree 
 which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall

NOT eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die." and 
 here did man demonstrate his ability to disobey the com- 
 mandments of his maker; for the Twelfth verse tells us 
 that they did do what God told them not to do. "And the 
 man said. The woman whom thou gravest to be with me, she 
 gave me of the tree, and I DID EAT." 
 
 Gen. 4 : 7. "If thou doest not well. Sin lieth at thy door." 
 
 NOT DOING WELL, is God's first definition for sin. 
 
 P. 373. L. 5, "It is easier to cure the most malignant 
 disease than it is to cure sin," — You will please note the con- 
 tradiction here. How can she cure something" that does not 
 EXIST? on P. 447. L. 2. "THERE IS NO SIN." Now how 
 are you going to harmonize these statements of Mrs. Eddy? 
 But let us read again. "It is easier to cure the most malig- 
 nant disease than it is to cure SIN. The author has raised 
 up the dying, partly because they were willing to be restor- 
 ed, while she was struggling long, and perhaps in vain, to 
 lift a student out of chronic sin." 
 
 This statement is startling, when we remember some 
 of the quotations that she has made. On Page 447, L. 22, 
 "There is no SIN." Why should she struggle to lift a per- 
 son out of that which does not exist? And then sometimes 
 not do it, as she says,"in vain." but again why not get rid of 
 sin by her method as she tells us. P. 392. L. 28, "TO GET 
 RID OF SIN through Science, DIVEST IT of any supposed 
 MIND or REALITY." 
 
 It is very evident that the author of Christian Science 
 cannot do what she tells others to do, DIVEST IT of any 
 supposed MIND or REALITY. For if she could, she would 
 not struggle IN VAIN, as she says she has. 
 
 P. 457. L. 28. "Man is INCAPABLE OF SIN. The real 
 man cannot depart from holiness, nor can God, by whom 
 man is evolved, engender the capacity of freedom to sin." 
 
 Notice in the first place, according to Christian Science, 
 man was not CREATED by God. but EVOLVED from Him. 
 The Bible says he was CREATED. 
 
 Gen. 1 : 27, "So God CREATED man in His own image." 
 
 Then again, the Bible teaches us that man IS CAP- 
 ABLE OF SIN, and does SIN, 
 
 Psm. 51 : 3, 4, "For I acknowledge my transgression, 
 and my SIN is ever before me.' — Against Thee, Thee only 
 HAVE I SINNED." 
 
 The Bible story of our first parents show that Mrs.

 who are eating the God-forbidden, Soul-blighting, Truth 
 killing, deadening teaching that comes from the same teach- 
 er that deceived our first parents. 
 
 P. 186. L. 11, "Evil is a NEGATION, because it is the 
 absence of truth. It is NOTHING, because it is the absence 
 of something. It is unreal, because it pre-supposes the ab- 
 sence of God." 
 
 Evil is not a NEGATION, but some thing that men do. 
 
 Psm. 51: 4, "Against Thee, Thee only, have I sinned 
 and DONE THIS EVIL in thy stent." Here the Psalmist 
 HAD DONE IT, and GOD SAW IT. 
 
 It is something that men can discern. 
 
 Heb. 5: 14, "But strong meat belongeth to them that 
 are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their 
 senses exercised to discern both good and EVIL/' Here Paul 
 tells us that they that have their senses exercised, can dis- 
 cern Good, and EVIL. This may be the reason that Chris- 
 tian Science denies the fact of EVIL.

 Do you see how well this teaching suits SINFUL human 
 nature? In Christian Science you can lie, steal, commit 
 adultry, swear, rob their fellow men, get drunk, and com- 
 
mit all manner of the workings of the body, and they can 
 do no harm. This is the undisputed teaching of Christian 
 Science, according to the quotation above, and given by the 
 author of Christian Science. Get the statement again. "IN 
 CHRISTIAN SCIENCE men can do NO HARM." 
 
 1 John 1 : 8, "If we say that we HAVE NO SIN, we de- 
 ceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us." 
 
 Rom. 5: 12, "Wherefore as by one man SIN entered in 
 to the world, and death by sin, and so death passed upon 
 all men, for that ALL HAVE SINNED." 
 
 Here God tells us that something entered into the world 
 that caused DEATH to PASS UPON ALL MEN, and that 
 ALL MEN have done it. What is this if it is not EVIL? Let 
 Christian Science answer. But no answer comes. 
 
 Now please notice what Mrs. Eddy says in the fore- 
 going quotations. 
 
 "SIN is an ILLUSION, a NEGATIVE, UNREAL 
 NOTHINGNESS, UNCONSCIOUS ERROR, an AWFUL 
 DECEPTION, a DELUSION, a MIRAGE OF ERROR, a 
 MORTAL BELIEF. There is NO SIN, MAN is INCAP- 
 ABLE of SIN, and God did not make man CAPABLE of 
 SIN." 
 
 I have shown with each statement that the Bible 
 teaches something very different from what Christian Sci- 
 ence teaches, and that the teachings of Christian Science 
 are not in harmony with the teaching of the Bible, nor from 
 the God of the Bible. If you accept the teachings of Chris- 
 tian Science, you reject the Bible; But if you accept the 
 teaching of the BIBLE, you deny Christian Science. Which 
 do you accept?

CHAPTER XIII 
 SATAN 
 
 P. 248. L. 12. "Devil, DELUSION." 
 
 The Bible tells us that he is a PERSON. 
 
 Math. 4:1, "Then was Jesus lead up of the spirit into 
 the wilderness to be tempted of the DEVIL," Here he 
 TEMPTS Jesus. 4: 5, "Then the DEVIL Taketh Him up 
 into the holy city, and setteth Him on a pinnacle of the 
 temple.,, Here he TEMPTS the Lord Himself. 4 : 8, "Again 
 the DEVIL took Him up into an exceeding high mountain." 
 Here he is the tempter of our Lord. 
 
 Luke 4: 3, 6, "And the DEVIL said unto Him," Here 
 he is talking to Jesus. "And the DEVIL said unto Him, all 
 this power will I give to thee," Here the DEVIL is talking 
 to Christ, and offers to Him the power and glory of the 
 world, as it belonged to him, and Jesus did not deny the 
 statement made by SATAN. 
 
 Rev. 20: 10, "And the DEVIL that deceived them was 
 cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beasts 
 and the false prophets are, and shall be tormented day and 
 night for ever and ever." 
 
 Heb. 2: 14, "Forasmuch then as the children are par- 
 takers of flesh and blood, He (Christ) also Himself likewise 
 took part of the same : that through death He might destroy 
 him that hath POWER over death, THAT IS, THE DEVIL." 
 
 The statements of the Scripture here are conclusive, 
 that the Devil is not a DELUSION, but a PERSON. Which 
 do you believe? 
 
 P. 187. L. 11, "ILLUSIVE PERSONIFICATION, named 
 Satan." 
 
 The Bible does not teach this, but that he is a PERSON. 
 
 John 8: 44, "Ye are of your father the devil." The 
 devil then had children, for this is the statement of Jesus 
 Himself Fatherhood is the characteristic of personality. 
 
 2 Cor. 11: 14, "Satan HIMSELF is transformed into an

angel of light/' 
 
 Psm. 109 : 6, "—Let SATAN STAND at his right hand." 
 
 Each of the above statements show the personality of 
 Satan. 
 
 P. 406. L. 19, "Resist evil,— ERROR OF EVERY SORT

 Now notice the contradictions here. P. 71. L. 2. "EVIL 
 HAS NO REALITY. It is neither person, place, or thing, 
 but is simply a belief, an illusion of the material mind." If 
 it has NO REALITY, then how resist it? 
 
 The Bible says in James 4 : 7, "Rseist the DEVIL, and 
 HE will flee from you." 
 
 1 Peter 5 : 8, " — Your adversary the DEVIL, as a roar- 
 ing lion, WALKETH about, seeking whom HE may devour." 
 
 Math. 25: 41, "The devil and HIS angels." 
 
 In each of the above statements, we find PERSONALI- 
 TY, and not as Mrs. Eddy says, "error of every sort." 
 
 P. 292. L. 22, "Ye are of your father, the devil, — 
 EVIL." 
 
 Now notice her statement, P. 330. L. 29, "EVIL IS 
 NOTHING CLAIMING TO BE SOMETHING." Now hear 
 this in the light of her statement above. Ye are of your 
 father, the NOTHING. Take the Bible statements here, 
 and you will see that Mrs. Eddy is wrong. 
 
 Job 2: 2, 4, 6, 7, "And the Lord said unto SATAN, 
 From whence comest thou? And SATAN ANSWERED the 
 Lord, and said, from going to and fro in the earth, and from 
 WALKING up and down in it.— And SATAN ANSWERED 
 the Lord, and SAID, Skin for skin, — And the Lord said unto 
 SATAN, behold lie is in thine hands, but save his life. — So 
 went SATAN forth from the presence of the Lord, and 
 SMOTE Job with sore boils." 
 
 Here we find the Lord (SPEAKING to SATAN, SATAN 
 ANSWERING the Lord. Satan WALKING up and down 
 through the earth. Satan in the presence of the Lord. 
 Satan SMOTE Job with sore boils. Every statement show- 
 ing personality. 
 
 In John 14: 30, Jesus calls him "the Prince of this 
 world." 
 
 P. 462. L. 25, "We lose the high signification of omni- 
 potence, when after admitting that God, or good, is omni- 
 present and has all power, WE STILL BELIEVE THERE IS 
 ANOTHER, named evil." 
 
 Christian Science must believe there is, for she says on,

 Here she admits it but does not believe it. We believe 
 it because the Bible says there is. 
 
 Rom. 7: 19, "For the good that I would I do not; but 
 the EVIL which I would not, that I do." 
 
 Rom. 7 : 21, "I find then a law, that, when I would do 
 good, EVIL is ever present with me." 
 
 P. 469. L. 15, "The SUPPOSITIOUS OPPOSITE of in- 
 finite Mind — called devil or evil — is not TRUTH, but ER- 
 ROR without intelligence or reality." 
 
 Here she means GOD. on P. 275. L. 12, "LIFE, TRUTH, 
 and LOVE are the Scripture names for God." No one ever 
 claimed the devil was God, but her theology makes God 
 EVERY THING. P. 257. L. 1. "IF GOD is within and with- 
 out all things, then ALL IS GOD." so since the DEVIL IS 
 NOT GOD, she argued him out of existence, and makes 
 him "ERROR, without intelligence or reality," but when we 
 turn to the Bible we find Christian Science and the Bible do 
 not agree at all. 
 
 Rev. 12: 9, "And the great dragon was cast out, that 
 old serpent, called the DEVIL, and SATAN, which deceiv- 
 eth the whole world ; he was cast out into the earth." 
 
 1 John 3 : 8, "He that committeth sin is of the DEVIL ; 
 for the DEVIL sinneth from the beginning. For this pur- 
 pose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy 
 the works of the DEVIL." 
 
 1 John 3: 10, "In this the children of God are mani- 
 fested, and the children of the DEVIL." 
 
 Acts 13 : 10, " — O full of all subtilty and all mischief, 
 thou child of the DEVIL, thou enemy of all righteousness." 
 
 Here the Bible and Christian Science do not agree. 
 Which do you believe? You cannot accept both, to accept 
 one, means to reject the other. 
 
 P. 554. L. 20, "Jesus defines this opposite of God and 
 His creation better than we can, when He said, "He is a 
 liar, and the father of it," Jesus also said, "Have not I chosen 
 you twelve, and one of you is a Devil, Jesus never intimat- 
 ed that God made a devil, but He did say, Ye are of your 
 father, the devil! All these sayings were to show that mind 
 in matter is the author of itself, and is simply a falsity and

an illusion." 
 
 Now the question for every honest person to settle, is ; 
 Did Jesus mean what He said, or did He mean what Mrs. 
 Eddy says He meant? Jesus said in plain words, to be 
 understood by the humblest, "Have not I chosen you twelve, 
 and one of you is a devil," According to Christian Science, 
 it would read, "Have not I. chosen you twelve, and ONE OF 
 YOU IS A FALSITY AND AN ILLUSION." Then one 
 "was A FALSITY and an ILLUSION," Jesus never chose 
 twelve as He said He did, but chose eleven. 
 
 Here she denies the personality of the devil. This is 
 pure "Theosophy." One of the fundamental Axioms of 
 Theosophy is this, "There is NO PERSONAL devil. That 
 which is mystically called the devil is the negative and op- 
 Dosite of God. and whereas God is I AM, or positive Being, 
 the devil IS NOT." 
 
 Christian Science calls itself, "The understanding of 
 God." Which is the correct translation of the Greek word, 
 "Theosophy." Here is the danger signal which should 
 warn all from this system. Any "Wisdom of God," which 
 throws Satan into eclipse has the clear imprint of the prince 
 of darkness. For I am sure that Satan wishes to hide his 
 identity more than any man ever tried to prove his. 
 
 But what saith the Scripture. 
 
 Acts 5: 3, "But Peter said, Annanias, why hath Satan 
 filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost?" 
 
 James 4: 7, "Resist the devil, and HE will flee from 
 you." 
 
 Rev. 20: 10, "And the DEVIL that deceived them was 
 cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beasts 
 and the false prophets are, and shall be tormented day and 
 night forever and ever." 
 
 1 Peter 5 : 8, " — Your adversary the DEVIL, as a roar- 
 ing lion, WALKETH about, seeking whom HE may devour." 
 
 Mrs. Eddy refers to the devil as an "ILLUSIVE per- 
 sonification, delusion, evil, without intelligence or reality; 
 the devil is simply a falsity and illusion. 
 
 Let us substitute some of her terms for the word devil, 
 and see how it will read. 
 
 John 8: 44, "Ye are of your father the ILLUSION." 
 
 1 Peter. 5: 8, "Your adversary the ILLUSION, as a 
 roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may de- 
 vour." How could an ILLUSION WALK? 
 
 Math. 25: 41, "The ILLUSION and HIS angels." Does

 1 John 3: 8, "He that committeth sin is of the ILLU-

 Rev. 3. 9, "Behold, I will make them of the synagogue 
 of 'ILLUSION'." 
 
 Psm. 109: 6, "Let 'ILLUSION' stand at his right hand." 
 
 We might multiply quotations to show what a delusion 
 Mrs. Eddy was laboring under when she was trying to prove 
 the devil is an "illusion" but we have quoted enough. Scrip- 
 ture here to convince the seeker after TRUTH. 
 
 You will please note how positive the Bible speaks of 
 the PERSONALITY of SATAN, by using the PERSONAL 
 pronoun in most every instance. 
 
 This one thing is sure, if you accept the teaching of the 
 Bible concerning Satan, you will reject the teaching of 
 Christian Science, and if you accept the teaching of 
 Christian Science, you will reject the Bible. Which will it 
 be?

 JUDGMENT. 
 
 74th Edition, P. 187, "NO FINAL JUDGMENT 
 AWAITS MORTALS." 
 
 The Bible says there is. Here Mrs. Eddy must be mis-

 2 Peter 2 : 9, "The Lord knoweth how — to reserve the 
 unjust unto the day of JUDGMENT to be punished." 
 
 Acts 24: 25, "And he (Paul) reasoned of righteous- 
 ness, temperance, and JUDGEMENT to come." 
 
 Acts 17: 31, "He (God) hath appointed a day, in which 
 He will JUDGE the world." 
 
 Luke 10: 14, "It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and 
 Sidon at the JUDGMENT than for you." 
 
 Heb. 9: 27, " — It is appointed unto men once to die,

 In the above quotations, Mrs. Eddy declares, that man 
 is NOT lost spiritually; And that "It IS A SENSE OF SIN, 
 AND NOT A SINFUL SOUL, that is lost." Let us take the 
 testimony of the Bible, and hear what it says. 
 
 Ezk. 18: 4, "-The SOUL that SINNETH, IT shall DIE." 
 
 Math. 10: 28, "And fear not them which kill the body, 
 but are not able to KILL THE SOUL." 
 
 Math. 16: 26, "For what is a man profited, if he shall 
 gain the whole world; and LOSE HIS OWN SOUL? Or 
 what shall a man give in exchange for his SOUL?" 
 
 You will see in her system of religion, if soul is lost, 
 her God is lost, for in Christian Science, God is iSOUL, and 
 SOUL is God. P. 335. L. 16, "SOUL and Spirit being one, 
 God and SOUL are one." This we have answered with the 
 Bible under the head of SOUL.

 The Scripture says heaven is a locality.

 2 Kings 2: 11, "Elijah went up by a whirlwind INTO 
 HEAVEN." 
 
 2 Chron. 6: 19-21, "O Lord my God — harken unto the 
 cry and the prayer which Thy servant prayeth before Thee 
 —HEAR, THOU FROM THY DWELLING PLACE, EVEN 
 FROM HEAVEN." 
 
 Jesus Christ speaks from heaven and closes the issue 
 concerning locality. 
 
 Rev. 3: 21, "I AM SET DOWN WITH MY FATHER

 We have proved her first statement to be untrue. Her 
 second is just as absurd. Christ does not show us the way, 
 He IS THE WAY.

 not give her light, and the stars shall fall from 'a divine state 
 of mind' — and the powers of the — 'harmony of being* — shall 
 be shaken ; and then shall appear the sign — 'idea of God' — 
 coming in the clouds , of a — 'divine state of mind' — with 
 power and great glory." 
 
 Rev. 21 : 1-3, "And I saw a new — 'harmony of being' — 
 and a new — 'illusion'; — for the first — 'divine state of mind' 
 — and the first — 'illusion' — were passed away and there 
 was no more sea. And I John saw the Holy City, New Jeru- 
 salem, coming down from — 'principle' — out of — 'harmony 
 of being' — prepared as a bride for her husband. And I 
 heard a great voice out of — 'a divine state of mind' — saying, 
 behold the tabernacle of — 'principle' — is with men, and He 
 shall dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and 
 — 'principle'— Himself shall be with them, and He shall be

 RESURRECTION.

 Christian Science teaches the REPRODUCTION of a 
 non-existing body, and not the RESURRECTION of the 
 actual body of Christ. But the Scripture teaches nothing 
 of the REPRODUCTION, but of the RESURRECTION of 
 the BODY. 
 
 1 Cor. 15. 3, 4, "For I delivered unto you first of all 
 that which I also RECEIVED, how that Christ DIED for our 
 sins according to the Scriptures; and that He was buried, 
 and that He ROSE again the third day according to the 
 Scriptures." 
 
 This teaches four things. 1. CHRIST DIED. 2, He 
 DIED for our sins. 3, He was BURIED. 4, He ROSE from 
 the dead. 
 
 Isa. 26: 19, "MY DEAD BODY SHALL ARISE." 
 
 74th Edition, P. 490, "Our Master reappeared to His 
 students; that is, TO THEIR APPREHENSION. He rose 
 on the third day of His ASCENDING THOUGHT." 
 
 This is repeating what she has already stated, that the 
 resurrection of Christ was not the resurrection of the body, 
 but the higher raising of His thoughts. But let the Scripture 
 speak here. 
 
 Matt. 17 : 23, "And they shall kill Him, and the third 
 day He shall be RAISED again." 
 
 After His resurrection, we have the testimony of the 
 women that met Him. 
 
 Matt. 28 : 9, "All hail. And they came and HELD HIM 
 BY THE FEET, and worshipped Him." 
 
 It was Jesus whom they held by the feet, and not Hia 
 ASCENDING THOUGHT. 
 
 It was Jesus, not an idea who met them.

 triumph over body and matter." 
 
 The Bible plainly declares that the resurrection of 
 Christ was not the triumph OVER THE BODY, but the

 HANDS ; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into My 
 SIDE : and be not faithless but believing." 
 
 Acts 10: 40, 41, "Him God RAISED UP the third day, 
 and showed Him openly ; not to all the people, but unto all 
 the witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, WHO DID

 DEAD." 
 
 Isa. 26: 19, "MY DEAD BODY SHALL RISE."

 after His resurrection, that His body was not changed until

 In this quotation, she makes the ASCENSION of Christ 
 a "RISING INTO A HIGHER UNDERSTANDING OF THE 
 SPIRIT." The Bible says the ascension of Christ, was the 
 rising up from this earth to heaven.

 Bethany, and He lifted up His hands, and blessed them. — 
 And it came to pass while He blessed them, He was parted

 and IMMORTALITY. This error theorizes — that man 
 HAS a resurrection from the dust." 
 
 Why does she depart from the Bible, and give us 
 BRAINOLOGY here as her theology, when she declares 
 "that as adherents of the truth they take the inspired word 
 of the Bible as their sufficient guide." We are sure she 
 never found this teaching in the Bible, so she calls it brain- 
 ology. But let the Bible speak here. 
 
 John 5 : 28, 29, "And shall come forth ; they that have 
 done good, unto the RESURRECTION of life: and they 
 that have done evil, unto the RESURRECTION of damna- 
 tion." 
 
 Acts 24: 15, "There shall be a RESURRECTION of the 
 DEAD, both of the just and unjust." 
 
 Isa. 26: 19, "My DEAD body shall arise." 
 
 P. 291. L. 25, "No resurrection from the grave awaits 
 mind or life, for the grave has no power over either." 
 
 This statement is no exception to the statements made 
 by Mrs. Eddy, for in all my study of Christian Science liter- 
 ature, I have not found one place where she refers to a Bible 
 doctrine that she does not contradict it. Here she declares 
 there is not resurrection from the dead. 
 
 1 Cor. 15: 12- 14, 35-38, 42-44, 51-53, "Now if Christ 
 be preached that He rose from the dead, how say some 
 among you that there is NO resurrection of the dead? But 
 if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not 
 risen : And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, 
 and your faith is also vain. — But some men will say, How 
 are the dead raised up? and with what body do they come? 
 Thou fool, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except 
 it die: — and that which thou sowest, thou sowest not that 
 body that shall be, but bear grain, it may chance of wheat 
 or some other grain. But God giveth it a body as it hath 
 pleased Him, and to every seed his own body. So also is

the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption, it 
 is raised in incorruption : It is sown in dishonor ; it is raised 
 in glory: it is sown in weakness; it is raised in power: It 
 is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There

 show you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall 
 all be changed. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, 
 at the last trump ; for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead

 The Scripture speaks with no uncertain sound here. 
 Now which do you believe? The Scripture or Christian 
 Science? You cannot accept them both.

 DISEASE 
 
 74th Edition, P. 46, "You say a boil is painful; but that 
 is impossible. The boil simply manifests your belief in 
 pain." 
 
 Take the testimony of the Scripture here. 
 
 2 Kings 20: 1, 5, 7, "In those days was Hezekiah sick 
 unto death. And the prophet Isaiah the son of Amoz came 
 to him, and said unto him, thus saith the Lord, Set thine 
 house in order; for thou shalt DIE, and not LIVE. — Turn 
 again and tell Hezekiah the captain of my people, Thus 
 saith the Lord, The God of David, I have heard thy prayer, 
 I have seen thy tears: behold I will heal thee: On the third 
 day thou shalt go up into the house of the Lord. — And 
 Isaiah said take a lump of figs, And they took and laid it 
 on the BOIL and he recovered." 
 
 Here we learn that Hezekiah was sick. Sick unto 
 death. This sickness was caused by a BOIL. 
 
 Job 2: 7, "So went Satan forth from the presence of 
 the Lord, and smote Job with SORE BOILS from the sole 
 of his foot unto his crown." 
 
 Job had BOILS. They were SORE BOILS. Some pain 
 surely. 
 
 74th Edition, P. 415, "Sickness IS A DREAM from 
 which the patient needs to be awakened." 
 
 74th Edition, P. 447. "Sickness IS AN ILLUSION." 
 
 The Bible says sickness is some thing real. Neither a 
 DREAM nor an ILLUSION. 
 
 Ish. 38: 1, "In those days was Hezekiah SICK unto 
 DEATH. And Isaiah the prophet son of Amoz came unto 
 him, and saith unto him. Thus saith the Lord, set thine 
 house in order, for thou SHALT DIE, and not live." 
 
 Here we find that the King was sick. The sickness was 
 known to the prophet. So it was not a dream of the King, 
 but known to the prophet who came to him. It was not an

ILLUSION, for others knew that the King was sick. 
 
 Dan. 8: 27, "And I Daniel fainted and WAS SICK cer- 
 tain days." 
 
 Daniel says he WAS SICK. So SICK he FAINTED. 
 
 Mark 1 : 30, "But Simon's wife's mother lay SICK with 
 a FEVER." 
 
 Not a DREAM, but a FEVER. Not an ILLUSION, but 
 a REALITY. 
 
 Ex. 15: 26, "And said, If thou wilt diligently harken 
 to the voice of the Lord thy God, and wilt do that which is 
 right in His sight, and wilt give ear to His commandments, 
 and keep all His statutes, I will put none of these DISEASES 
 upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians; for 
 I am the Lord that healeth thee." 
 
 Here we find that it is not an ILLUSION, but some- 
 thing that God does send on the people. 
 
 74th Edition, P. 401. "The sick through BELIEF, have 
 induced their own STIFF joints and COMPACT muscles." 
 
 Deut. 28: 35, "The Lord shall SMITE thee in the 
 KNEES and in the LEGS, with a SORE botch that cannot 
 be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the top of thy 
 head." 
 
 74th, Edition, P. 410, "ARGUE with the patient that 
 HE HAS NO DISEASE." 
 
 Christian Science claim to get rid of disease, by "Ar- 
 guing with the patient that he has NO DISEASE." Chris- 
 tian Science would try to make the patient believe that 
 which was not true, if the Bible is true. Here let us take 
 the testimony of the Bible. 
 
 Mark 1 : 30, "But Simon's wife's mother lay SICK OF 
 a FEVER." 
 
 The Bible says she was SICK. 
 
 2 Kings 13 : 14, "Now Elisha was fallen SICK of his 
 SICKNESS, whereof he died." 
 
 Elisha WAS fallen SICK, and DIED from the SICK- 
 NESS. 
 
 Ish. 38: 1, "In those days was Hezekiah SICK unto 
 death." 
 
 Do you suppose that any amount of ARGUING that 
 they were not sick, could have changed the fact, and saved 
 the lives of Elisha and Hezekiah? 
 
 Deut. 7: 15, "And the Lord will take away from thee 
 all SICKNESS, and will put none of the evil diseases of 
 Egypt, which thou knowest, upon thee; but will lay them

upon all them that hate thee." 
 
 Here the Lord takes Sickness away from some, NOT 
 ARGUES it away, as Mrs. Eddy tells Christian Scientists to 
 do. He not only takes it from some, but LAYS it on others. 
 Would Christian Science get it from them by ARGUING 
 with them that THEY HAD NO DISEASE. The Bible says 
 the Lord LAID ON THEM. 
 
 The Lord tells the children of Israel that He will SEND 
 disease and SICKNESS because of their disobedience. 
 
 Deut. 28: 59-61, "Then the Lord will make thy plagues 
 wonderful, and the plagues of thy seed, even great plagues, 
 and of long continuance, and sore SICKNESS, and of long 
 continuance. — Moreover He will bring upon thee all the 
 diseases of Egypt, which thou wast afraid of; and they 
 shall cleave unto thee. — Also every SICKNESS, and every 
 PLAGUE, which is not written in the book of the law, them 
 will the Lord BRING upon thee." 
 
 74th Edition, P. 392. "Man is NEVER SICK." 
 
 If Christian Science is true, then our hospitals are fill- 
 ed with hearty, sound, robust, well people. Just working 
 a fraud on their friends. They are having a picnic and a 
 delightful time, while their friends all the while think they 
 are suffering. You doubtless know that Christian Science 
 builds no hospitals. Gives no sympathy to the suffering. 
 Feeds no hungry. Their delusive teaching has taken all 
 the human sympathy out of them, and as was said to the 
 writer of this book by a Scientist, "They look on such de- 
 luded folks with a kind of scorn, saying, why don't you listen 
 to Christian Science and be well?" 
 
 The Bible does not say Man is NEVER SICK. 
 
 2 Chron. 21 : 15, "And thou shalt HAVE great SICK- 
 NESS." 
 
 Dan. 8 : 27, "And I Daniel fainted and WAS SICK cer- 
 tain days." 
 
 Deut. 28: 61, "Also every SICKNESS,— will the Lord

 The testimony of all who have had experience with 
 consumptives, is that they do not believe they have the dis- 
 ease, even while they are passing away. 
 
 The Bible tells us it is not a FALSE BELIEF, but some- 
 thing that God sends on the people. 
 
 1910 Edition, Chap. 7, P. 176. "ALL disease is the RE- 
 SULT of EDUCATION, and disease can carry its ill-effect 
 no farther than mortal mind maps out the way." 
 
 Take the first part of this quotation, "All disease is the 
 result of education," Let the Bible testify here, and you will 
 readily see that this statement is not true. 
 
 Deut. 28: 59-61, "Then the LORD WILL MAKE thy 
 plagues wonderful, and the plague of thy seed, even great 
 plagues, and of long continuance, and sore SICKNESS, — 
 Moreover He will BRING UPON thee all the diseases of

 The Scripture here shows that Disease is not the result 
 of education as Mrs. Eddy teaches, and would have you be- 
 lieve. 
 
 Ezk. 5: 17, "So will I send upon you famine, — and 
 pestilence." 
 
 If all disease is the result of education, what is it that 
 snatches from our loving embrace the darling child? 
 
 Now take the last part of the quotation. "Disease can 
 carry its ill-effects no farther than mortal mind maps out 
 the way." 
 
 How can disease then be in garments? Is a garment 
 mortal mind? The Bible tells us it will be there. 
 
 Lev. 13: 51, 52, "And he shall look on the plague on 
 the seventh day; if the plague be spread in the GARMENT, 
 either in the warp or in the woof, or in a skin, or in any work 
 that is made of skin; the plague IS A FRETTING LEPRO- 
 SY; it is unclean. He shall therefore burn that garment, — 
 wherein the PLAGUE IS, for it is a FRETTING LEPROSY." 
 
 Again. If Disease can carry its ill-effects no farther 
 than mortal mind maps out the way, How can disease be in 
 the walls of the house? Are they mortal? The Bible tells

us it will be there. 
 
 Lev. 14: 34-45, " — When ye be come into the land of 
 Canaan, which I give to you for a possession, and I PUT 
 THE PLAGUE of leprosy in a house of the land of your po- 
 session ; And he that owneth the house shall come and tell 
 the priest, saying, It seemeth to me there is as it were a 
 plague in the house; Then the priest shall command that 
 they empty the house, before the priest go into it to see the 
 plague, that all that is in the house be not made unclean: 
 and afterward the priest shall go in to see the house; And 
 he shall look on the plague, and, behold, if the plague be 
 in the walls of the house with hollowed strakes, greenish 
 or reddish, which in sight are lower than the walls; Then 
 the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house,

 74th Edition, P. 472. "The less mind there is manifest- 
 ed in matter, the better. When the UNTHINKING LOB- 
 STER loses his claw, it grows again. If the science of life 
 were understood, it would be found that the senses of mind 
 are never lost, and that matter has no sensation. ..Then the 
 human limb (supposing it were lost through sickness, dis- 
 ease, or accident) would be replaced as readily as the lob- 
 sters claw — not with an artificial limb, but with a GENU- 
 INE ONE." 
 
 If there is no such thing as matter; and Christian Sci- 
 ence says there is not; Eighth Edition, Vol. 2. PL 147, "Sci- 
 ence decides matter of the mortal body to BE NOTHING 
 BUT A BELIEF AN ILLUSION." This being true, the lob- 
 ster had no real body, and therefore no claw, and how could 
 he lose that which he did not have, and also, how could he 
 replace it with another, when another cannot exist. The 
 natural conclusion is that the person who has NO MIND AT 
 ALL, and ALL IDIOTS would be immune from disease. 
 
 Then the reason the stump-tail dog does not grow an- 
 other tail, is because the dog has too much mind, and is 
 thinking too much about his tail.

 CONTRADICTIONS 
 
 P. 345. L. 13, "In this volume of mine there are no con- 
 tradictory statements." 
 
 I am going to ask the reader to follow the statements 
 quoted here, and we will prove this statement to be untrue, 
 by giving many contradictory statements from Mrs. Eddy's 
 own books. 
 
 P. 393. L. 29, "MAN IS NEVER SICK, for mind is not, 
 and matter cannot be." But listen now to the next state- 
 ment she makes. "It is well to BE CALM IN SICKNESS: to 
 be hopeful is still better," again, "The author has restored 
 health in cases of both acute and chronic diseases in their 
 severest form." Now if MAN IS NEVER SICK, how could 
 she perform these supposed cures? 
 
 P. 159. L. 11, "Is the skillful or scientific surgery to 
 take no heed of material conditions, and treat the patient 
 as if she was so much MINDLESS MATTER, and as if mat- 
 ter were the only factor to be consulted?' 7 
 
 Now listen to her contradict herself. P. 281. L. 18, 
 "The MIND supposed to exist in matter or beneath the skull 
 bone is a MYTH." 
 
 P. 120. L. 12, "Is a man well if his senses say he is sick? 
 YES." To an undeceived person, this looks like lying, but 
 in Christian Science there is no such thing as lying. Listen 
 to her statement here. P. 464. L. 27, "If from any injury or 
 from any cause, a Christian Scientist were seized with pain." 
 Here even a Christian Scinetist may be seized with pain. 
 
 P. 293. L. 32, "THE FIVE PHYSICAL SENSES ARE 
 THE AVENUES and the instruments of human error." Mrs. 
 Eddy claims to have healed persons from almost every ail- 
 ment that the human family is subject to. Now how does 
 she know she has performed these healings, if the physical 
 senses are not to be relied on? Now hear what she says. P. 
 278. L. 5, "The material senses oppose this, BUT THERE

ARE NO MATERIAL SENSES." This contradicts her state- 
 ment, "The five physical senses are the avenues." If there 
 are no material senses, then how can the senses tell one 
 they are sick or well? 
 
 P. 244. L. 3, "Sin, sickness, and death are illusions of 
 the mortal mind." She also says that "Mortal mind is an 
 illusion," If this is so, then sin, sickness, and death are il- 
 lusions of an illusion. 
 
 P. 447. L. 24, she says, "THERE IS NO SIN.'' P. 480. 
 L. 19, "Man is incapable of sin." Now notice how she con- 
 tradicts these statements. P. 6. L. 1, "We cannot escape the 
 penalty due sin." P. 291. L. 23, "Probation growth after 
 death is needed to get rid of sin." P. 36. L. 4, "Sufficient 
 suffering before and after death, is necessary to quench the 
 love of sin." P. 37. L. 2. "They who sin must be punished." 
 
 In these quotations, she says there is no sin, then she 
 says, sin must be punished. She says, there is no death, 
 then she says, Sin must be punished after death, and you 
 must keep in mind that she says, P. 345. L. 13, "In this vol- 
 ume of mine there are NO CONTRADICTORY statements." 
 Do you believe it? 
 
 P. 393. L. 29, "Matter cannot be sick." Now notice 
 what she says P. 110. L. 2, "Contradict forever the belief 
 that MATTER can be actual." She seems to be serious here, 
 but we can hardly believe that she is honest. 
 
 P. 80. L. 27, "MORTAL MIND produces TABLE-TIP- 
 PINGS as certainly as table-settings." Her belief in table- 
 tippings remains with her. When she was a Spiritualist 
 and practiced such things, she says, "Mortal MIND tips the 
 table." Now hear what she says. "The PHRASE MORTAL 
 MIND implies something UNTRUE and therefore UN- 
 REAL." Now does mortal mind tip the table, or does it not? 
 On, P. 71. L. 25, "I NEVER COULD BELIEVE in Spiritual- 
 ism." She could not believe in it, and yet she practiced it. 
 Now if she practiced something that she could NEVER be- 
 lieve, can we believe that she is honest when she practices 
 Christian Science? 
 
 P. 291. L. 12, "Universal salvation rests on progression 
 and probation, and is unattainable without them." Now 
 hear her contradict this statement. P. 428. L. 22, "The great 
 spiritual fact must be brought out that MAN IS, NOT shall 
 be, PEPRFECT AND IMMORTAL." If MAN IS PERFECT 
 AND IMMORTAL, how can he progress further?

 her statement, "It is easier to cure the most malignant dis- 
 ease, than it is to cure SIN." How can she cure something 
 that does not exist? 
 
 P. 419. L. 8, "If your patient from any cause suffers a 
 RELAPSE." Then she says, P. 419. L. 22, "A RELAPSE 
 CANNOT REALLY OCCUR." 
 
 P. 401. L. 27, "It is better for Christian Science to leave 
 surgery and the adjustment of broken bones and disloca- 
 tions to the FINGERS OF A SURGEON." Then she tells us

 P. 497. L. 3, "As adherents of TRUTH, we take the in-

 ica." Here you see how she takes the Bible as her sufficient 
 guide, and the importance she puts on it.

 THE BIBLE, OR SCIENCE AND HEALTH. WHICH? 
 
 We here propose to show you the contrast, and esti- 
 mation that Mrs. Eddy and Christian Scientists places on 
 the Bible and Science and Health. You will see that the 
 Bible is not their guide, but what Mrs. Eddy teaches, is al- 
 ways authority with them. To the Christian Scientist, the 
 Bible is a book of "LIES, MYTHS, ERRORS, ALLEGORIES, 
 FABLES, METAPHORS," etc., according to the teachings 
 of Mrs. Eddy. 
 
 P. 497, L. 3, "As adherents of truth, we take the inspir- 
 ed Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal life." 
 We will prove to you in this chapter, that they do not take 
 the inspired word of the Bible, but rather, the words of 
 "Science and Health," which is their GUIDE to eternal life. 
 
 Miscellanies Writings, P. 170, "The material record of 
 the Bible IS NO MORE IMPORTANT TO OUR WELL-BE- 
 ING than the HISTORY OF EUROPE and AMERICA." 
 Now hear what she says about the importance of her book. 
 P. 456. L. 25, "A Christian Scientist requires my work on 
 Science and Health for his textbook, and so do all his stu- 
 dents and patients. Why? First; Because it IS THE VOICE 
 OF TRUTH TO THIS AGE, and contains the full statement

 darkening to some extent the inspired pages." The fore- 
 going quotation says that "mortal and material sense STOLE 
 into DIVINE records," thus the Bible has "MANIFEST MIS- 
 TAKES," But not so with Mrs. Eddy's book. P. 232. L. 32, 
 "In this volume of mine, there is NEITHER PLACE NOR 
 OPPORTUNITY for ERROR of any sort," and again she 
 says, "345. L. 13, "In this volume of mine there are NO 
 CONTRADICTORY STATEMENTS." Here she makes the 
 Bible a book of Errors, and her book INFALLIBLE. 
 
 Let us take just a few of her Scriptural interpretations, 
 and see if you can harmonize them with the Scripture. Gen. 
 1: 1, "In the beginning God created the heaven and the 
 earth." P. 503. L. 1, "Creation consists of the UNFOLDING 
 OF SPIRITUAL IDEAS and their IDENTITIES, which are 
 embraced in the infinite Mind and forever REFLECTED. 
 These IDEAS range from the innnstestimal to infinity and 
 the HIGHEST IDEAS ARE THE SONS AND DAUGHTERS 
 OF GOD." Is this taking the Bible as her guide? 
 
 In Genesis 2: 7, we read "And the Lord God formed 
 man out of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his 
 nostrils the breath of life, and man became a living soul." 
 Mrs. Eddy says here, P. 524. L. 24. "Is this addition to his 
 creation real or unreal ? Is it the truth, or is it a lie concern- 
 ing God and man? IT MUST BE A LIE." Do not forget 
 that she says, "As adherents of truth, we take the inspired 
 word of God as our sufficient guide." But here she makes 
 the Word of God teach a LIE. But again she says, P. 526. 
 L. 24, "This second Biblical account is a PICTURE OF ER- 
 ROR THROUGHOUT.'' Her book is infallible, but the 
 Bible accounts, are ERROR THROUGHOUT. How can she 
 take such a book as her "SUFFICIENT GUIDE TO ETER- 
 NAL LIFE?" 
 
 In Gen. 2 : 6, we read, "There went up a mist from the 
 earth, and it watered the whole face of the ground. " Hear 
 what Mrs. Eddy says about this, P. 546. L. 14, "This repre- 
 sents ERROR as starting from an idea of good on a material 
 basis. It supposes God and man to he manifested only 
 through the corporeal senses although the material sense 
 can take no cognizance of Spirit or the spiritual idea." P. 
 521. L. 23, "The second chapter of Genesis contains a state- 
 ment of the material view of God and the universe, a state-

ment which is the exact opposite of the scientific truth as 
 before recorded. ..The HISTORY OF ERROR or matter, if 
 veritable, would set aside the omnipotence of Spirit; but 
 it is the FALSE HISTORY in contradiction to the true." 
 
 P. 522. L. 25, 'This latter part of the second part of 
 Genesis, which portrays Spirit as SUPPOSEDLY co-operat- 
 ing with matter in constructing the universe, is based on 
 some HYPOTHESIS OF ERROR." P. 523. L. 6, "Although 
 presenting the exact opposite of truth, the LIE claims to be 
 truth, the CREATION OF MATTER ARISES from a MIST 
 or FALSE CLAIM." This does not look as though she takes 
 the Bible as her sufficient guide. 
 
 Of Gen. 2: 16, 17, she says, P. 27, L. 11, "Here THEi 
 METAPHOR represents God as TEMPTING MAN." Of 
 Gen. 2 : 19, she says, P. 527. L. 26, "Here THE LIE repre- 
 sents God as repeating creation, — asking a prospective sin- 
 ner to help him." Of Gen. 3: 4, 5, she says P. 530. L. 17, 
 "THIS MYTH represents ERROR as always asserting its 
 superiority over truth. — The history of error is a DREAM 
 narrative." Of Gen. 3: 9, 10, she says, P. 523. L. 28, "In 
 the ALLEGORY the body has been naked." and on P. 537. 
 L. 19, "No one can possibly doubt that the purpose of this 
 ALLEGORY — this second account in Gen. — is to depict the 
 FALSITY OF ERROR." In commenting on Gen. 1: 11, she 
 says, P. 543, L. 21, "Minerals and vegetables are found, ac- 
 cording to divine Science, to be the CREATION of ERRON- 
 EOUS THOUGHTS." And of Gen. 3: 22, she says, P. 545. 
 L. 3, "This could NOT BE THE UTTERANCE OF TRUTH 
 or science, for according to the record, material man was 
 fast degenerating, and NEVER HAD been divinely conceiv- 
 ed. On P. 457. L. 28. "Man is INCAPABLE OF SIN." Then 
 listen to P. 428. L. 22, "The great spiritual fact must be 
 brought out that MAN IS, NOT SHALL BE, PERFECT and 
 IMMORTAL." I am sure that the undeceived person will 
 see the absurdity here. Nothing but CONTRADICTIONS. 
 
 Of Genesis 1 : 9, she says, P. 506. L. 15, "And God said, 
 let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto 
 one place, and let the dry land appear; and it was so. 
 Spirit, God, GATHERS UNIFORM THOUGHTS into their 
 proper channels and UNFOLDS THESE THOUGHTS, even 
 as he opens the petals of a holy purpose in order that the 
 purpose may appear." Do you detect any similarity be- 
 tween the Scripture as recorded in Gen. 1 : 9, and the quo- 
 tation of Mrs. Eddy? Surely none. According to Mrs. Eddy

our Oceans and Seas, are only bodies of Uniform Thoughts. 
 
 Take another Scripture passage, P. 20. L. 27, "St. Paul 
 wrote, 'Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin that doth 
 so easily beset us, and let us run with patience the race that 
 is set before us; that is, LET US PUT ASIDE MATERIAL 
 SELF and SENSE, and SEEK THE DIVINE PRINCIPAL 
 and SCIENCE OF HEALING." This is not what the Bible 
 says at all, it is what Mrs. Eddy says. But again, P. 216. L. 
 28, "When you say man's body is material, I say with 
 Paul: Be willing rather to be absent from the body, and 
 be present with the Lord.' GIVE UP YOUR BELIEF IN 
 MIND AND MATTER." Paul never said the last. "Give up 
 your belief in mind and matter," Mrs Eddy said that, and 
 not the Bible. But again, P. 324. L. 27, "Paul writes, 'If 
 Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain.' That is, if 
 the IDEA of supremacy of Spirit, which is the true concep- 
 tion of being, come not to your thought, you cannot be bene- 
 fited by what I say." Here again, Paul never said what Mrs. 
 Eddy says he did. Paul is talking of the resurrection of 
 Jesus Christ from the dead, and not the idea of supremacy 
 of Spirit, as Mrs. Eddy would have him say. 
 
 P. 545. L. 11, "The notion of a material universe is ut- 
 terly opposed to the theory of man as evolved from mind." 
 The Bible tells us that man was not evolved from mind, but 
 CREATED by God Himself, as we have shown in the chap- 
 ter on Man. 
 
 P. 545. L. 21. "The translators of this record of scienti- 
 fic creation entertainea a false sense of being. They believ- 
 ed in the existence of matter, its propagation and power." 
 Now if the translators gave us the Bible, and they "enter- 
 tained a false sense of belief," how can Mrs. Eddy take "The 
 Bible as her sufficient guide," and she says she does. Then 
 she says, P. 547. L. 3, "If one of the statements of this book 
 is true, — she means Science and Health — every one must 
 be true." We wonder if she would admit the opposite. If 
 one of the statements was false, every one must be false? 
 
 P. 127. L. 26, "SCIENCE is an EMENATION OF DI- 
 VINE MIND, and is ALONE ABLE TO INTERPRET GOD 
 ARIGHT. IT HAS A SPIRITUAL, and not a MATERIAL 
 ORIGIN. IT IS DIVINE UTTERANCE." P. 147 L. 24, 
 "Our Master healed the sick, but He left NO DEFINITE 
 RULE for demonstrating this principle of healing and pre- 
 venting disease. THIS RULE REMAINED TO BE DIS- 
 COVERED IN CHRISTIAN SCIENCE." This sets aside the

Holy Spirit, and ascribes His power and work to Christian 
 Science. John 14: 26, "But the Comforter, which is the 
 Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, He 
 SHALL TEACH YOU ALL THINGS/' Now can it be that 
 the Holy Ghost failed in the work He was to do, and left 
 that to a woman who, "Was conceived in sin, and brought 
 forth in iniquity," as Mrs. Eddy says she was. Get this.P. 
 476. L. 13, "MORTALS are not fallen children of God.—- 
 They were From the beginning of mortal history, CONCEIV- 
 ED IN SIN and brought forth in INIQUITY." Now do you 
 believe that the Holy Ghost committed this task to such a 
 person? Then He did not do what Jesus said He would do, 
 "Teach you ALL things," but this is not the only place where 
 Mrs. Eddy sets herself above the Holy Ghost. But the 
 question for every honest person, is, which is to be believed ; 
 The Bible, or Science and Health? 
 
 P. 232. L. 32, "THERE IS NEITHER PLACE nor OP- 
 PORTUNITY IN SCIENCE for ERROR of any sort." We 
 would like to know when Science attained this perfection. 
 And WHY WAS their text book, Science and Health revis- 
 ed so many times? 
 
 P. 274. L. 23, "Divine Science IS ABSOLUTE." Now 
 hear what she says about the Bible. P. 139. L. 15, "The 
 MANIFEST MISTAKES in the ancient versions; the THIR- 
 TY THOUSAND DIFFERENT READINGS in the old Tes- 
 tament, and the THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND IN THE 
 New, these facts show how a MORTAL and MATERIAL 
 SENSE STOLE INTO the divine record." But NO place for 
 such mistake in Mrs. Eddy's book. 
 
 In the Christian Science Quarterly, the official maga- 
 zine of the cult, we find the following. "The cononical 
 writings, together with the word of our text book (Science 
 and Health) corroborating and explaining the Bible texts 
 in their spiritual import and application to all ages, past, 
 present, and future— constitute a sermon un divorced from 
 truth, uncontaminated and unfettered by human hypo- 
 thesis and authorized by Christ." again we find the Editor 
 of the Christian Science Journal, writes, "The Bible and 
 Science and Health as one Book — The Sacred Scripture." 
 The Christian Science Journal Apr. 1889 says, "Horror 
 many good people have of our making the author of 
 Science and Health equal with Jesus — She is God — sent to 
 the world as much as any character of Sacred Writ." and 
 again, "Mrs. Eddy and God makes a majority." In The

Christian Sentinel, June, 1899, we read, from an address 
 given by Mrs. Eddy at the annual meeting at the mother 
 church, "It was not then Mrs. Eddy whom the people heard 
 but— THE VOICE OF GOD." 
 
 We believe that we have shown here by quotations 
 taken from Science and Health, concerning her own book, 
 and the Bible, that Mrs. Eddy and Christian Scientists, take 
 the "Key to the Scriptures" Science and Health as their 
 guide, and not the teachings of the Bible, as they would 
 like to have you believe. In every quotation that Mrs. Eddy 
 uses, she either CONTRADICTS or theorizes it until the 
 Holy Ghost Himself would not recognize it as His revela- 
 tion. There is one thing sure. If you accept Christian Sci- 
 ence, you MUST REJECT the BIBLE : And if you accept the 
 Bible, you MUST REJECT Christian Science. You CAN- 
 NOT believe both.
