RIVERS OF NEW ENGLAND How much New England's scenic charms are due to its glorious rivers and frolicking streams is apparent to anyone who travels over the wide-spreading lines of the Boston & Maine System. Take away its rivers, and even its majestic mountains and peerless lakes would seem lonesome. New England has many rivers, great and small. Some of them are important handmaids of commerce, furnishing power and water to scores of busy mills and factories along their shores, and all of them are indispensable adjuncts of the landscape. The Connecticut, rising in the northern part of mountainous New Hampshire and winding through that state, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut to the Atlantic, is the longest, and in many respects the most notable of our New England streams. It wends its way through as diversified scenery and surroundings as this section of the country can produce, passing mountains, villages, farm lands, manufacturing cities, and colleges. From source to mouth it is always a beautiful river ; and the same can be as truthfully said about the Merrimack, which has its origin in another part of the mountain region of the Granite State and sweeps grandly down through Massachusetts and into the sea at Newburyport. The Merrimack, like the Connecticut, offers magnificent opportunities for canoeing and boating, and long journeys can be made upon both streams. The foliage and reflection effects along these serpentine streams are among the most beautiful in the world. For sheer picturesqueness there are few rivers that excel the Nashua. The Deerfield, the Saco, the Ammonoosuc, the Pemigewasset, the Piscataqua, the Kennebec, the White, and the Winooski all have their special charm of scenery or association, while the Maine wilderness rivers, the Penobscot, the AUagash, and the St. John, are a lure for hundreds who love the primitive life that still may be enjoyed in these parts. Nowhere is there a more satisfying or enchanting railroad journey than along the banks of these longer rivers of New England, like the Merrimack and the Connecticut. It was the latter stream that Thoreau, John Boyle O'Reilly, and other of the country's literary celebrities explored with such delight in days gone by ; and this and some of the other New England rivers were the highways of the red men in days yet more ancient. Contributing, as they do, so much to the enjoyment and physical upbuilding of the vacation throngs who annually find their way into the great New England summer playground, our lovely rivers and tumbling mountain brooks and streams will ever hold an important place in the affections of the American public.
