FROM CHRISTMAS EVE TO 
 EASTER MORN 
 
 Long ago there was no Christmas day in 
 the world. The years came and went, and 
 some days were brighter than others ; but not 
 one of those bright days was Christmas day. 
 
 Do you wonder why that was? It was 
 because Jesus Christ had not come to earth. 
 
 But one year He did come, and was born 
 a little baby in Bethlehem, and now all over 
 the world we keep Christmas day as one of 
 the gladdest days in all the year, because it 
 takes our thoughts back to the time when 
 Jesus Christ was born. 
 
 About three months after Christmas day 
 is Easter morning; but the first Easter 
 morn did not come for thirty-three years 
 after the first Christmas day. Here is the 
 story of those thirty-three years, the story 
 of the life and death and resurrection of our 
 Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

 CHRIST 
 
 There was in the days of Herod, the king 
 of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, 
 and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron. 
 And her name was Elisabeth. They were 
 both righteous before God. And they had 
 no child. 
 
 And it came to pass that Zacharias went 
 into the temple of the Lord. And the whole 
 multitude of the people were praying without. 
 And there appeared unto him an angel of 
 the Lord, standing on the right side of the 
 altar. And when Zacharias saw him, he 
 was troubled, and fear fell upon him. 
 
 But the angel said unto him, 'Fear not, 
 Zacharias, for thy prayer is heard, and 
 thy wife Elisabeth shall bear thee a son, and 
 thou shalt call his name John. And thou 
 shalt have joy and gladness, and many 
 shall rejoice at his birth. For he shall be 
 great in the sight of the Lord; and he

 shall be filled with the Holy Spirit; and 
 many of the children of Israel shall he turn 
 to the Lord their God. And he shall go 
 before the Lord to turn the hearts of the 
 fathers to the children, to make ready a 
 people prepared for the Lord.' 
 
 And Zacharias said, * Whereby shall I 
 know this, for I am an old man, and my 
 wife well stricken in years?' 
 
 And the angel answering said unto him, * I 
 am Gabriel that stand in the presence of 
 God, and am sent to shew thee these glad 
 tidings. And behold, thou shalt be dumb 
 and not able to speak, until the day that 
 these things shall come to pass, because 
 thou believest not my words which shall be 
 fulfilled in their season.' 
 
 And the people waited for Zacharias, and 
 marvelled that he tarried so long in the 
 temple. And when he came out he could 
 not speak unto them ; and they knew that 
 he had seen a vision in the temple, for he 
 beckoned unto them, and was speechless. 
 
 And the angel Gabriel was sent from God 
 unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, to a 
 virgin of the house of David ; and the virgin's 
 name was Mary.

 And the angel came to her and said, * Hail, 
 thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is 
 with thee ; blessed art thou among women.' 
 And when she saw him she was troubled at 
 his saying. 
 
 And the angel said unto her, 'Fear not, 
 Mary, for thou hast found favour with God. 
 And behold, thou shalt bring forth a son, and 
 shalt call his name Jesus. He shall be 
 great, and shall be called the Son of the 
 Highest. And the Lord shall give unto him 
 the throne of his father David, and he shall 
 reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and 
 of his kingdom there shall be no end.' 
 
 Then said Mary unto the angel, 'How 
 shall this be ? ' 
 
 And the angel answered and said unto her, 
 'The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, 
 and the power of the Highest shall over- 
 shadow thee ; therefore also that holy thing 
 which shall be born of thee shall be called 
 the Son of God.' 
 
 And Mary said, c Behold the handmaid of 
 the Lord; be it unto me according to thy 
 word.' 
 
 And the angel departed from her. 
 
 Now Elisabeth brought forth a son, and

 her. And it came to pass on the eighth day 
 that they called him Zacharias after the 
 name of his father. 
 
 And his mother answered and said, 'Not 
 so, but he shall be called " John."' 
 
 And they said unto her, l There is none of 
 thy kindred that is called by this name.' 
 And they made signs to his father how he 
 would have him called. 
 
 And he wrote saying, ' His name is John/ 
 And they marvelled all. And the mouth of 
 Zacharias was opened, and he spake and 
 praised God and said, ' Blessed be the Lord 
 God of Israel, for he hath visited and re- 
 deemed his people, to perform the mercy 
 promised to our fathers that he would grant 
 unto us, that we might serve him without 
 fear all the days of our life. And thou child 
 shalt be called the prophet of the Highest, 
 for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord 
 to prepare his ways.' 
 
 And the child grew and waxed strong in 
 spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of 
 his shewing unto Israel. 
 
 Now the birth of Jesus was on this wise. 
 There went out a command from Cesar that

 all the world should be taxed. And all went 
 to be taxed, every one to his own city. And 
 Joseph went up from Galilee out of the city 
 of Nazareth, unto the city of David which is 
 called Bethlehem, to be taxed with Mary his 
 wife. And so it was that while they were 
 there, Mary brought forth her first-born son, 
 and wrapped him in swaddling clothes and 
 laid him in a manger, because there was no 
 room for them in the inn. 
 
 And there were in the same country shep- 
 herds abiding in the field, keeping watch 
 over their flock by night. And lo, the angel 
 of the Lord came upon them, and the glory 
 of the Lord shone round about them, and they 
 were sore afraid. 
 
 And the angel said unto them, ' Fear not, 
 for behold, I bring you good tidings of great 
 joy which shall be to all people. For unto 
 you is born this day in the city of David, a 
 Saviour which is Christ the Lord. And this 
 shall be a sign unto you : Ye shall find the 
 babe wrapped in swaddling clothes lying in 
 a manger.' 
 
 And suddenly there was with the angel a 
 multitude of the heavenly host praising God 
 and saying, * Glory to God in the highest, 
 and on earth peace, good will toward men.'

 And it came to pass as the angels were 
 gone away from them into heaven, the shep- 
 herds said one to another, i Let us now go 
 even unto Bethlehem and see this thing 
 which is come to pass, which the Lord hath 
 made known unto us/ 
 
 And they came with haste, and found 
 Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a 
 manger. And when they had seen it, they 
 made known abroad the saying which was 
 told them concerning this child. And all 
 they that heard it wondered at those things 
 which were told them by the shepherds. 
 But Mary kept all these things, and pondered 
 them in her heart. And the shepherds 
 returned, glorifying and praising God, for all 
 the things which they had heard and seen, 
 as it was told unto them. 
 
 And the child's name was called Jesus, 
 and they brought him to Jerusalem to 
 present him to the Lord. 
 
 And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem 
 whose name was Simeon. And the same 
 man was just and devout; and the Holy 
 Spirit was upon him. And it was shewn 
 unto him by the Holy Spirit that he should 
 not see death before he had seen the Lord's 
 Christ And he came into the temple, and

 the parents brought in the child Jesus. 
 Then took he him up in his arms and blessed 
 God, and said, 'Lord, now lettest thou thy 
 servant depart in peace, according to thy 
 word, for mine eyes have seen thy salvation.' 
 And Joseph and his mother wondered at 
 those things which were spoken of him. 
 
 Now behold there came wise men from the 
 East to Jerusalem, saying, * Where is he 
 that is born King of the Jews? For we 
 have seen his star in the East, and are 
 come to worship him/ 
 
 When Herod the king had heard these 
 things, he was troubled. And when he had 
 gathered all the chief priests and scribes of 
 the people together, he asked of them where 
 Christ should be born. 
 
 And they said unto him, ' In Bethlehem.' 
 
 Then Herod, when he had called the wise 
 men, asked them what time the star appeared. 
 And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, 
 'Go and search for the young child, and 
 when ye have found him, bring me word 
 again, that I may come and worship him 
 also.' 
 
 When they had heard the king they 
 departed, and lo, the star which they saw in

 the East went before them till it came and 
 stood over where the young child was. 
 When they saw the star they rejoiced with 
 exceeding great joy. And when they were 
 come into the house, they saw the young 
 child with Mary, his mother, and fell down 
 and worshipped him. And when they had 
 opened their treasures they gave unto him 
 gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 
 
 And being warned of God in a dream that 
 they should not return to Herod, they went 
 into their own country another way. 
 
 When they were departed, behold the 
 angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a 
 dream, saying, l Arise and take the young 
 child and his mother and flee into Egypt, 
 and be thou there until I bring thee word; 
 for Herod will seek the young child to 
 destroy him.' 
 
 Then Joseph arose, and took the young 
 child and his mother by night and went 
 into Egypt, and was there until the death of 
 Herod. 
 
 Then Herod, when he saw that he was 
 mocked of the wise men, was wroth, and 
 sent forth and slew all the children that were 
 in Bethlehem, from two years old and under, 
 according to the time which he had heard

 from the wise men. Then was there a voice 
 heard, of weeping and great mourning. 
 Women weeping for their children, and 
 would not be comforted, because they are 
 not. 
 
 But when Herod was dead, Joseph arose 
 and took the young child and his mother, 
 and came into the land of Israel, and dwelt 
 in Nazareth. 
 
 And the child grew and waxed strong in 
 spirit, filled with wisdom ; and the grace of 
 God was upon him. 
 
 Now Joseph and Mary went to Jerusalem 
 every year at the feast of the passover. And 
 when Jesus was twelve years old they went 
 up to Jerusalem, after the custom of the 
 feast. And as they returned the child Jesus 
 tarried behind in Jerusalem. 
 
 And Joseph and his mother knew not of 
 it But they, supposing him to have been 
 in the company, went a day's journey. And 
 they sought him among their kinsfolk, 
 and when they found him not, they turned 
 back again to Jerusalem seeking him. 
 
 And it came to pass that after three days 
 they found him in the temple sitting in the 
 midst of the doctors, both hearing them and

 asking them questions. And all that heard 
 him were astonished at his understanding 
 and answers. And when they saw him they 
 were amazed, and his mother said unto 
 him, 'Son, why hast thou thus dealt with 
 us? Behold, thy father and I have sought 
 thee sorrowing/ 
 
 And he said unto them, c How is it that ye 
 sought me? Wist ye not that I must be 
 about my Father's business ? ' 
 
 And they understood not the saying which 
 he spake unto them. And he went down 
 with them, and came to Nazareth, and was 
 subject unto them. But his mother kept 
 all these sayings in her heart. And Jesus 
 grew in wisdom and stature, and in favour 
 with God and man. 
 
 After those days the word of God came 
 unto John the son of Zacharias. And he came 
 into all the country about Jordan, preaching 
 in the wilderness and saying, ' Repent ye, for 
 the kingdom of heaven is at hand/ And 
 the same John was clothed with camel's 
 hair, and with a leathern girdle about 
 his loins; and he did eat locusts and wild 
 honey. And there went out unto him all 
 the land of Judea, and they of Jerusalem,

 and were all baptized of him in the river of 
 Jordan. 
 
 And the people asked him, € What shall we 
 do?' He saith unto them, 'He that hath 
 two coats, let him give to him that hath 
 none, and he that hath meat let him do like- 
 wise.' 
 
 And the soldiers asked him, saying, 'And 
 what shall we do ? ' And he said unto them, 
 1 Do violence to no man ; and be content with 
 your wages.' 
 
 And all men asked in their hearts of John 
 whether he were the Christ or not. And 
 John said unto them all, ' I indeed baptize 
 you with water; but there standeth one 
 among you whom ye know not, the latchet 
 of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose : 
 he shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.' 
 
 Then cometh Jesus unto John, to be 
 baptized of him. But John forbade him, 
 saying, 1 1 have need to be baptized of thee, 
 and comest thou to me ? ' 
 
 And Jesus answering said unto him, 
 'Suffer it to be so now.' 
 
 Then he suffered him. 
 
 And Jesus when he was baptized went up 
 straightway out of the water; and lo, the 
 heavens were opened unto him, and he saw

 the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and 
 lighting upon him; and lo a voice from 
 heaven, saying, 'This is my beloved Son, 
 in whom I am well pleased.' 
 
 And Jesus himself began to be about 
 thirty years of age. Then was he led into 
 the wilderness to be tempted. And he was 
 there in the wilderness forty days. And in 
 those days he did eat nothing: and when 
 they were ended, he afterward hungered. 
 
 And the tempter came to him and said, * If 
 thou be the Son of God, command that these 
 stones be made bread.' 
 
 But he said, ' It is written, " Man shall not 
 live by bread alone, but by every word of 
 God."' 
 
 Then he brought Jesus up into the holy 
 city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the 
 temple and saith unto him, l If thou be the 
 Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is 
 written, " He shall give his angels charge 
 over thee to keep thee ; and in their hands 
 they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou 
 dash thy foot against a stone." ' 
 
 Jesus said unto him, * It is written again, 
 "Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God."' 
 
 Again the tempter taketh him up into a

 high mountain, and sheweth him all the 
 kingdoms of the world, and saith unto him, 
 'All these things will I give thee and the 
 glory of them, if thou wilt fall down and 
 worship me.' 
 
 Then saith Jesus unto him, 'Get thee 
 hence ; for it is written, "Thou shalt worship 
 the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou 
 serve." • 
 
 Then the tempter leaveth him, and behold, 
 angels came and ministered unto him. 
 
 Again John stood and two of his disciples, 
 and looking upon Jesus as he walked, he 
 saith, ' Behold the Lamb of God ! • 
 
 And the two disciples heard him speak, 
 and they followed Jesus. 
 
 Then Jesus turned and saw them follow- 
 ing, and saith unto them, 'What seek ye?' 
 
 They said unto him, 'Master, where 
 dwellestthou?' 
 
 He saith unto them, ' Come and see.' 
 
 They came and saw where he dwelt, and 
 abode with him that day ; for it was about 
 the tenth hour. 
 
 One of the two which heard John speak, 
 and followed him, was Andrew, Simon 
 Peter's brother. He findeth his own brother

 Simon, and saith unto him, c We have found 
 the Christ/ And he brought him to 
 Jesus. 
 
 The day following Jesus would go forth 
 into Galilee, and findeth Philip, and saith 
 unto him, ' Follow me/ 
 
 Now Philip was of Bethsaida, the city of 
 Andrew and Peter. Philip findeth Nathanael, 
 and saith unto him, * We have found him of 
 whom Moses did write, Jesus of Nazareth, 
 the son of Joseph.' 
 
 And Nathanael said unto him, * Can there 
 any good thing come out of Nazareth?' 
 Philip saith unto him, l Come and see.' 
 
 Jesus saw Nathanael coming to him, and 
 saith of him, i Behold an Israelite indeed, in 
 whom is no guile!' 
 
 Nathanael saith unto him, 'Whence know- 
 est thou me?' Jesus said unto him, ' Before 
 that Philip called thee, when thou wast 
 under the fig-tree I saw thee.' 
 
 Nathanael answered and saith unto him, 
 'Thou art the Son of God; thou art the 
 King of Israel.' 
 
 Jesus said unto him, 'Because I said 
 unto thee, " I saw thee under the fig-tree," 
 believest thou? Thou shalt see greater 
 things than these !'

 And there was a marriage in Cana of 
 Galilee ; and the mother of Jesus was there. 
 And both Jesus was called and his disciples 
 to the marriage. 
 
 And when they wanted wine, the mother 
 of Jesus saith unto him, 'They have no 
 wine/ Jesus saith unto her, ' Mine hour is 
 not yet come/ 
 
 His mother saith unto the servants, 
 'Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it/ 
 
 And there were set there six water-pots of 
 stone. 
 
 Jesus saith unto them, 'Fill the water- 
 pots with water/ And they filled them up 
 to the brim. 
 
 And he saith unto them, ' Draw out now, 
 and bear unto the ruler of the feast'; and 
 they bare it. 
 
 When the ruler of the feast tasted the 
 water that was made wine, and knew 
 not whence it was, but the servants which 
 drew the water knew, the ruler of the 
 feast called the bridegroom, and saith unto 
 him, 'Every man at the beginning doth 
 set forth good wine; and when men have 
 well drunk, then that which is worse: 
 but thou hast kept the good wine until 
 now/

 After this Jesus went down to Capernaum, 
 he, and his mother, and his brethren, and 
 his disciples ; and they continued there not 
 many days. 
 
 And the Jews' passover was at hand, and 
 Jesus went up to Jerusalem, and found in 
 the temple those that sold oxen and sheep 
 and doves, and the changers of money 
 sitting. And when he had made a scourge of 
 small cords, he drove them all out of the 
 temple, and the sheep and the oxen; and 
 poured out the changers' money, and over- 
 threw the tables ; and said unto them that 
 sold doves, 'Take these things hence ; make 
 not my Father's house an house of 
 merchandise.' 
 
 And Jesus returned unto Galilee. And 
 he must needs go through Samaria. Then 
 cometh he to a city near to the ground 
 that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now 
 Jacob's well was there. Jesus therefore, 
 being weary with His journey, sat thus on 
 the well : and it was about noon. 
 
 And there cometh a woman of Samaria 
 to draw water. 
 
 Jesus saith unto her, ' Give me to drink.'

 For his disciples were gone away into the 
 city to buy meat. 
 
 Then saith the woman unto him, ' How is 
 it that thou being a Jew askest drink of me, 
 which am a woman of Samaria?' for the 
 Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. 
 
 Jesus said unto her, * If thou knewest the 
 gift of God, and who it is that saith unto 
 thee, " Give me to drink "; thou wouldest have 
 asked of him, and he would have given thee 
 living water.' 
 
 The woman saith unto him, 'Sir, thou 
 hast nothing to draw with, and the well is 
 deep/ 
 
 Jesus answered and said unto her, * Who- 
 soever shall drink of this water, shall thirst 
 again; but whosoever shall drink of the 
 water that I shall give him, shall never thirst, 
 but the water that I shall give him, shall 
 be in him a well of water springing up into 
 everlasting life.' 
 
 The woman saith unto him, 'Sir, give me 
 this water that I thirst not, neither come 
 hither to draw.' 
 
 And again she said, c Sir, I see that thou 
 art a prophet. Our fathers worshipped in 
 this mountain, and ye say that in Jerusalem 
 is the place where men ought to worship.'

 Jesus saith unto her, 'The hour cometh, 
 and now is, when the true worshippers shall 
 worship the Father in spirit and in truth, 
 for the Father seeketh such to worship him. 
 God is a spirit, and they that worship him, 
 must worship him in spirit and in truth/ 
 
 The woman saith unto him, * I know that 
 Christ cometh: when he is come, he will 
 tell us all things.' 
 
 Jesus saith unto her, 'I that speak unto 
 thee am he.' 
 
 And upon this came his disciples, and 
 marvelled that he talked with the woman. 
 
 The woman then left her water-pots, and 
 went her way into the city, and saith to the 
 men, 'Come, see, is not this the Christ?' 
 
 Then they went out of the city and came 
 unto him. 
 
 In the meanwhile his disciples prayed 
 him, saying, 'Master, eat.' But he said 
 unto them, 'I have meat to eat that ye 
 know not of.* 
 
 Therefore said the disciples one to another, 
 ' Hath any man brought him ought to eat ? ' 
 
 Jesus said unto them, ' My meat is to do 
 the will of my Father which sent me, and to 
 finish his work.' 
 
 So when the Samaritans were come unto

 him, they besought him that he would tarry 
 with them: and he abode there two days. 
 And many of the Samaritans of that city 
 believed on him, and said, 'We have heard 
 him ourselves, and know that this is indeed 
 the Christ, the Saviour of the world.' 
 
 When Jesus was come into Galilee the 
 Galileans received him, having seen all the 
 things that he did at Jerusalem at the feast ; 
 for they also went unto the feast. And 
 there went out a fame of him through all 
 the land round about. And he taught in 
 their synagogues, being glorified of all. 
 
 So he came again into Cana of Galilee, 
 where he made the water wine. And there 
 was a certain nobleman whose son was sick 
 at Capernaum. When he heard that Jesus 
 was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went 
 unto him and besought him that he would 
 come down, and heal his son : for he was at 
 the point of death. 
 
 Then said Jesus unto him, * Except ye see

 And Jesus came and dwelt in Capernaum 
 which is upon the sea-coast. And it came to 
 pass that as the people pressed upon him to 
 hear the word of God, he stood by the 
 Lake of Galilee, and saw two boats by the 
 lake; but the fishermen were gone out of 
 them, and were washing their nets. And he 
 entered into one of the boats which was 
 Simon's, and prayed him that he would thrust 
 out a little from the land. And he sat down 
 and taught the people out of the boat. 
 
 Now when he had left speaking, he said 
 unto Simon, c Launch out into the deep, and 
 let down your nets for a draught.'

 taken nothing: nevertheless at thy word I

 And when they had this done, they caught

 that they should come and help them. 
 And they came, and filled both the boats, so 
 that they began to sink. When Simon 
 Peter saw it he fell down at Jesus' knees, 
 saying, * Depart from me ; for I am a sinful 
 man, O Lord.' 
 
 For he was astonished, and all that were 
 with him, at the draught of fishes which 
 they had taken : and so was also James and 
 John, which were partners with Simon. And 
 when they had brought their boats to land, 
 they forsook all, and followed him. 
 
 And they entered into the house of Simon 
 and Andrew, with James and John. But 
 Simon's wife's mother lay sick of a fever, and 
 anon they tell Jesus of her. And he came 
 and took her by the hand and lifted her up ; 
 and the fever left her; and she ministered 
 unto them. 
 
 And at even when the sun did set, they 
 brought unto him all that were sick. And

 And behold, men brought in a bed a man 
 which was taken with a palsy: and they 
 sought means to bring him in and to lay him 
 before him. And when they could not find

 him down through the roof with his couch 
 into the midst before Jesus. And when he 
 saw their faith, he said unto the sick of the 
 palsy, ' Son, thy sins be forgiven thee.* 
 
 But there were certain of the Scribes 
 and Pharisees sitting there, and saying in 
 their hearts, i Who can forgive sins but God 
 only?' 
 
 But Jesus said unto them, 'Why reason 
 ye these things in your hearts? Whether 
 is it easier to say to the sick of the palsy, 
 "Thy sins be forgiven thee"; or to say, 
 " Arise, and take up thy bed and walk " ? But 
 that ye may know that the Son of Man hath 
 power on earth to forgive sins/ he saith 
 to the sick of the palsy, ' I say unto thee, 
 arise, and take up thy bed, and go thy way

 man when the water is troubled, to put me 
 into the pool: but while I am coming,

 ' Ye are the light of the world. A city that 
 is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do 
 men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, 
 but on a candlestick ; and it giveth light 
 unto all that are in the house. Let your 
 light so shine before men, that they may 
 see your good works, and glorify your 
 Father which is in heaven. 
 
 'When ye pray, do not vainly repeat words 
 as the heathen do ; for they think that they 
 shall be heard for their much speaking. Be 
 not ye therefore like unto them: for your 
 Father knoweth what things ye have need 
 of before ye ask him. After this manner 
 therefore pray ye : 
 
 '"Our Father which art in heaven, hal- 
 lowed be Thy name. Thy kingdom come. 
 Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. 
 Give us this day our daily bread. And for- 
 give us our sins, as we also forgive every 
 one that is indebted to us. And lead us not 
 into temptation, but deliver us from evil : for

 Therefore take no thought, saying, What 
 shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, 
 Wherewithal shall we be clothed? for your 
 heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need

 1 Ask and it shall be given you ; seek and ye 
 shall find ; knock and it shall be opened unto 
 you; for every one that asketh receiveth; 
 and he that seeketh, findeth; and to him 
 that knocketh it shall be opened. What 
 man is there of you, who if his son ask bread 
 will give him a stone? Or if he ask a fish, 
 will give him a serpent? If ye then being 
 evil, know how to give good gifts unto your 
 children, how much more shall your Father 
 which is in heaven give good things to them

 when he heard of Jesus, he sent unto him 
 the elders of the Jews, beseeching him 
 that he would come and heal his servant. 
 And when they came to Jesus they besought 
 him, saying that he was worthy for whom 
 he should do this : for he loveth our nation, 
 and he hath built us a synagogue. 
 
 And Jesus saith, ' 1 will come and heal him.' 
 
 And when he was now not far from the 
 house, the centurion sent friends to him, 
 saying unto him, * Lord, I am not worthy 
 that thou shouldest come under my roof,

 man carried out, the only son of his mother, 
 and she was a widow: and much people of

 saw her, he had compassion on her, and said 
 unto her, l Weep not.' 
 
 And he came and touched the bier: and

 to speak. And he delivered him to his

 with the hairs of her head, and kissed his 
 feet, and anointed them with the ointment. 
 Now when the Pharisee which had bidden 
 him saw it, he spake within himself saying, 
 'This man, if he were a prophet, would have 
 known who and what manner of woman this 
 is that toucheth him ; for she is a sinner/ 
 
 And Jesus answering said unto him, 
 'Simon, I have somewhat to say unto thee.' 
 
 And he saith, ' Master, say on.' 
 
 'There was a certain man which had two 
 debtors. The one owed five hundred pence, 
 and the other fifty, and when they had 
 nothing to pay he frankly forgave them both. 
 Tell me, therefore, which of them will love 
 him most?' Simon answered and said, 'I 
 suppose that he to whom he forgave most/ 
 
 And he said unto him, ' Thou hast rightly

 in hath not ceased to kiss my feet My 
 head with oil thou didst not anoint, but 
 this woman hath anointed my feet with

 loved much ; but to whom little is forgiven,

 deepness of earth ; but when the sun was up

 when they hear, receive the word with joy, 
 and these have no root, which for a while 
 believe and in time of trial fall away. And

 And it came to pass when Jesus returned, 
 the people gladly received him, for they 
 were all waiting for him. And he came 
 into his own city. And behold there cometh 
 unto him one of the rulers, a man named 
 Jairus. He had one only daughter about 
 twelve years of age, and she lay a-dying. 
 And when he saw Jesus he fell at his feet, 
 and besought him greatly, saying, ' My little 
 daughter lieth at the point of death. I pray 
 thee come and lay thy hand on her, that she 
 may be healed, and she shall live.'

 people followed him and thronged him. 
 And a woman which had been ill twelve 
 years, and had suffered many things of many

 And while he yet spake there cometh one 
 from the ruler's house saying, ' Thy daughter

 was spoken, he saith unto the ruler, ' Be not 
 afraid, only believe, and she shall be made

 of the maiden. And he seeth the tumult, and

 them, 'Why make ye this ado and weep? 
 Give place, for the maid is not dead, but 
 sleepeth.* 
 
 And they laughed him to scorn, knowing

 came a cloud and overshadowed them, and

 for this man doeth many miracles. If we let 
 him thus alone, all men will believe on him.' 
 
 Jesus therefore walked no more openly 
 among the Jews, but went thence unto a 
 country near to the wilderness, and there 
 continued with his disciples. 
 
 And he was teaching in one of the 
 synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, 
 there was a woman which had been bowed 
 together for eighteen years, and could in no 
 wise lift up herself. And when Jesus saw 
 her, he called her unto him, and said unto

 her, c Woman, thou art loosed from thine 
 infirmity.' 
 
 And he laid his hands on her, and she was 
 made straight, and glorified God. 
 
 And the ruler of the synagogue said unto 
 the people, l There are six days in which men 
 ought to work. In them therefore come and 
 be healed, and not on the Sabbath day.' 
 
 The Lord then answered him and said, 
 1 Doth not each one of you on the Sabbath 
 loose his ox or his ass from the stall, and 
 lead him away to watering? And ought not 
 this woman, bound, lo, these eighteen years, 
 be loosed from this bond on the Sabbath 
 day?' 
 
 And when he had said these things his 
 enemies were ashamed, and the people 
 rejoiced for all the glorious things that were 
 done by him. 
 
 And he went through the cities and 
 villages teaching and journeying towards 
 Jerusalem. Then said one unto him, 'Lord, 
 are there few that be saved ? ' 
 
 And he said unto them, ' Strive to enter in 
 at the strait gate, for many, I say unto you, 
 will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. 
 And they shall come from the east and from

 of that country; and he sent him into his 
 fields to feed swine. And he would fain 
 have fed on the husks that the swine did 
 eat : and no man gave unto him. 
 
 1 And when he came to himself he said, 
 "How many hired servants of my father's 
 have bread enough and to spare, and I 
 perish with hunger ! I will arise and go to 
 my father, and will say unto him, Father, 
 I have sinned against heaven, and before 
 thee, and am no more worthy to be called

 'And he arose, and came to his father. 
 But when he was yet a great way off, his 
 father saw him, and had compassion, and 
 ran, and fell on his neck, and kissed him. 
 And the son said unto him, " Father, I have 
 sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and

 pray, the one a Pharisee, and the other a 
 tax-gatherer. The Pharisee stood and 
 prayed thus with himself, "God, I thank 
 thee that I am not as other men are, or 
 even as this tax-gatherer. I fast twice in 
 the week. I give tithes of all that I 
 possess."

 heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying,

 But when the young man heard that, he 
 went away sorrowful, for he was very rich. 
 
 And when Jesus saw that he was very 
 sorrowful, he said, i How hardly shall they that 
 have riches enter into the kingdom of God ! ' 
 
 And the disciples were astonished at his 
 words. But Jesus saith unto them again, 
 1 Children, how hard is it for them that trust 
 in riches to enter into the kingdom of God ! 
 It is easier for a camel to go through the 
 eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter 
 into the kingdom of God/ 
 
 And they that heard it said, 'Who then 
 can be saved ? ' 
 
 And Jesus looking upon them said, c With 
 men it is impossible, but not with God, for 
 with God all things are possible.' Then said

 'The kingdom of heaven is like unto a

 hire labourers into his vineyard. And when

 penny a day, he sent them into his vine-

 market place, and said unto them, "Go ye 
 also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is

 And he took again the twelve, and began 
 to tell them what things should happen unto 
 him, saying, * Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, 
 and the Son of Man shall be delivered unto 
 the chief priests, and unto the scribes, and 
 they shall condemn him to death, and shall 
 deliver him to the Gentiles, and they shall 
 mock him, and shall scourge him, and shall 
 spit upon him, and shall kill him, and the 
 third day he shall rise again.* 
 
 And they understood none of these things ; 
 and this saying was hid from them, neither 
 knew they the things which were spoken. 
 
 And they came to Jericho ; and as Jesus 
 went out of Jericho with his disciples and a 
 great multitude of people, blind Bartimaeus 
 sat by the highway side begging, and hear- 
 ing the multitude pass by, he asked what it

 for Jesus' sake only, but that they might see 
 Lazarus also whom he had raised from the 
 dead. But the chief priests plotted that 
 they might put Lazarus also to death, 
 because that by reason of him many of the 
 Jews went away and believed on Jesus. 
 
 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, 
 and were come unto the Mount of Olives, 
 Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying, i Go 
 ye into the village over against you, in the 
 which at your entering ye shall find a colt

 servant, that they should give him of the 
 fruit of the vineyard. And they caught him

 he sent a third, and they wounded him also 
 and cast him out. But last of all he sent 
 unto them his son, his well beloved, saying, 
 "They will reverence my son." But those 
 vine-dressers said among themselves, "This 
 is the heir; come let us kill him, and the 
 inheritance shall be ours." So they cast him 
 out of the vineyard and killed him. What 
 shall therefore the Lord of the vineyard do ?

 against them ; but they feared the people, and

 And one of the Scribes asked him, c Which 
 is the first commandment of all ? ' 
 
 And Jesus answered him, 'The first of 
 all the commandments is : " Hear, O Israel, 
 the Lord our God is one Lord. And thou 
 shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy 
 heart, and with all thy soul, and with all 
 thy mind, and with all thy strength." 
 This is the first commandment. And the 
 second is like, namely this: "Thou shalt 
 love thy neighbour as thyself." There is 
 none other commandment greater than

 Master, thou hast said the truth, for there 
 is one God, and there is none other but he, 
 and to love him with all the heart, and with

 he said, 'The Scribes and Pharisees sit in 
 Moses* seat; all therefore whatsoever they 
 bid you do, that do. But do not ye after 
 their works. For they bind heavy burdens 
 and lay them on men's shoulders, but they 
 themselves will not move them with one 
 of their fingers. But all their works they 
 do to be seen of men. They love the upper- 
 most rooms at feasts, and the chief seats 
 and greetings in the markets, and to be 
 called of men, "Master, master." But be 
 not ye called "Master," for one is your 
 master, even Christ, and all ye are brethren. 
 But he that is greatest among you, shall 
 be your servant.' 
 
 And Jesus looked up and saw the rich 
 men casting their gifts into the treasury. 
 And there came a certain poor widow, and 
 she threw in two mites, which make a 
 farthing. And he called unto him his dis- 
 ciples, and saith unto them, 'Verily I say

 the treasury, for all they did cast in of

 and John and Andrew, asked him, 'Tell us 
 what shall be the sign of thy coming and

 hour knoweth no man, neither the Son, 
 but the Father. Watch ye therefore and 
 pray always, that ye may be thought worthy 
 to stand before the Son of Man. For ye 
 know not when your Lord doth come, at 
 even, or at midnight, or at cock-crowing, 
 or in the morning, lest coming suddenly 
 he find you sleeping. And what I say unto 
 you, I say unto all, " Watch." 
 
 'Then shall the kingdom of heaven be 
 likened unto ten virgins, which took their 
 lamps and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 
 And five of them were wise, and five were 
 foolish. They that were foolish took their 
 lamps, and took no oil in them, but the wise

 the wise, "Give us of your oil, for our lamps 
 are gone out." 
 
 1 But the wise answered, " Not so, lest there 
 be not enough for us and you, but go ye 
 rather to them that sell, and buy for your- 
 selves." 
 
 'And while they went to buy, the bride- 
 groom came. And they that were ready 
 went in with him to the marriage. And the 
 door was shut. Afterward came also the 
 other virgins, saying, "Lord, Lord, open

 'But he answered and said, "Verily I say

 ' Watch therefore, for ye know neither the

 but Lazarus was one of them that sat at

 costly, and she brake the box and poured it

 and wiped his feet with her hair, and the 
 house was filled with the odour of the oint- 
 ment. Then saith Judas, 'Why was not 
 this ointment sold for three hundred pence

 it was nigh at hand. And the women also 
 which came with him from Galilee beheld

 And when the Sabbath was past, behold 
 there was an earthquake, for the angel of 
 the Lord came down from heaven, and came 
 and rolled back the stone from the door of 
 the tomb, and sat upon it. His face was like 
 lightning, and his raiment white as snow, 
 and for fear of him the keepers did shake 
 and became as dead men. 
 
 And very early in the morning as it began to 
 dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary 
 Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, 
 and Salome, came unto the grave that they 
 might anoint the body of Jesus. And they 
 said among themselves, ' Who shall roll us

 And when they looked they saw that the

 again from the dead. Then the disciples 
 went away again into their own home, 
 wondering at that which was come to pass. 
 But Mary stood without at the grave weep- 
 ing. And as she wept she stooped down and 
 looked into the tomb, and seeth two angels 
 sitting the one at the head and the other at 
 the feet where the body of Jesus had lain. 
 And they say unto her, * Woman, why weep- 
 est thou ? ' 
 
 She saith unto them, l Because they have 
 taken away my Lord, and I know not where 
 they have laid him.' 
 
 And when she had thus said, she turned 
 back and saw Jesus standing and knew not 
 that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, 
 1 Woman, why weepest thou? Whom 
 seekest thou ? ' She supposing him to be 
 the gardener, saith unto him, 'Sir, if thou 
 have borne him hence, tell me where thou 
 hast laid him, and I will take him away/ 
 
 Jesus saith unto her, l Mary ! ' 
 
 She turned herself and saith unto him, 
 'Master!' 
 
 Jesus saith unto her, ' Go to my brethren, 
 and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father 
 and your Father, and to my God and your 
 God.'

 Mary came and told the disciples that she 
 had seen the Lord, and that he had spoken 
 these things unto her. 
 
 And behold, two of them went that same 
 day to a village called Emmaus. And they 
 talked together of all those things which had 
 happened. And Jesus himself drew near and 
 went with them, but their eyes were holden 
 that they should not know him. 
 
 And he said unto them, l What say ye one 
 to another as ye walk and are sad ? ' 
 
 And one of them said unto him, c Art thou 
 only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not 
 known the things which are come to pass 
 there in these days?' 
 
 And he said unto them, ' What things ? ' 
 
 And they said unto him, * Concerning Jesus 
 of Nazareth, and how the chief priests and 
 our rulers have crucified him. But we 
 trusted that it had been he which should 
 have redeemed Israel. And beside all this, 
 to-day is the third day since these things 
 were done. Yea, and certain women also of 
 our company which were early at the grave, 
 when they found not his body, came saying 
 that they had seen a vision of angels, which 
 said that he was alive. And certain of them 
 which were with us went to the grave, and

 found it even so as the women had said. 
 But him they saw not. 
 
 Then Jesus said unto them, 'O fools, 
 and slow of heart to believe, ought not Christ 
 to have suffered these things and to enter 
 into his glory ? ' 
 
 And they drew nigh unto the village 
 whither they went. And he made as though 
 he would have gone further. 
 
 But they said, l Abide with us, for it is 
 toward evening, and the day is far spent.' 
 
 And he went in to tarry with them. And 
 as he sat at meat with them, he took bread 
 and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them. 
 And their eyes were opened, and they knew 
 him, and he vanished out of their sight. 
 
 And they said one to another, l Did not our 
 heart burn within us, while he talked with us 
 by the way?' 
 
 And they rose up the same hour and 
 returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven 
 gathered together, and them that were with 
 them, saying, • The Lord is risen indeed, and 
 hath appeared unto Peter.' 
 
 And they told what things were done in 
 the way, and how he was known of them in 
 breaking of bread. 
 
 And as they thus spake, Jesus himself

 them, ' Peace be unto you/ 
 
 And when he had so said, he shewed 
 them his hands and his side. Then were 
 the disciples glad when they saw the Lord. 
 And while they yet believed not for joy, 
 Jesus said unto them, 'Have ye here any 
 meat?' 
 
 And they gave him a piece of a broiled 
 fish, and of an honeycomb. And he took 
 it, and did eat before them. 
 
 Then said he unto them, c Peace be unto 
 you. As my Father hath sent me, even so 
 send I you.' 
 
 And when Jesus had said this, he saith 
 unto them, i Receive ye the Holy Spirit.' 
 
 Then the eleven disciples went away into 
 Galilee. And Jesus shewed himself again 
 to them at the Sea of Galilee. And on this 
 wise shewed he himself. There were to- 
 gether Simon Peter and Thomas, and five 
 other of his disciples. 
 
 Peter saith unto them, l I go a-fishing.' 
 
 They say unto him, 'We also go with 
 thee/ 
 
 They went forth, and entered into a boat, 
 and that night they caught nothing.

 But when the morning was now come, 
 Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples 
 knew not that it was Jesus. 
 
 Then Jesus saith unto them, * Children, 
 have ye any meat ? ' 
 
 They answered him, * No/ 
 
 And he said unto them, c Cast the net on 
 the right side of the ship, and ye shall find.' 
 
 They cast therefore, and now they were 
 not able to draw it for the multitude of 
 fishes. Therefore that disciple whom Jesus 
 loved saith unto Peter, * It is the Lord.' 
 
 Now when Simon Peter heard that it 
 was the Lord, he girt his fishers coat unto 
 him, and did cast himself into the sea. And 
 the other disciples came in a little boat, 
 for they were not far from land, dragging 
 the net with fishes. 
 
 As soon then as they were come to land, 
 they saw a fire of coals there, and fish laid 
 thereon, and bread. 
 
 Jesus saith unto them, * Come and dine.* 
 
 And none of the disciples durst ask him, 
 'Who art thou?' knowing that it was the 
 Lord. 
 
 Jesus then cometh, and taketh bread and 
 giveth them, and fish likewise. 
 
 So when they had dined, Jesus saith to

 Simon Peter, * Simon, son of Jonas, lovest 
 thou me more than these ? ' 
 
 He saith unto him, 'Yea, Lord, thou 
 knowest that I love thee.' 
 
 Jesus saith unto him, * Feed my lambs.' 
 
 Jesus saith to him again the second time, 
 1 Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?' 
 
 He saith unto him, 'Yea, Lord, thou 
 knowest that I love thee.' 
 
 Jesus saith unto him, * Feed my sheep.' 
 
 Jesus saith unto him the third time, 
 * Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me?' 
 
 Peter was grieved because he said unto 
 him the third time, * Lovest thou me?' He 
 said unto him, 'Lord, thou knowest all 
 things, thou knowest that I love thee.' 
 
 Jesus saith unto him, ' Feed my sheep. 
 Verily, verily I say unto thee, when thou 
 wast young thou girdedst thyself and 
 walkedst whither thou wouldst, but when 
 thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth 
 thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and 
 carry thee whither thou wouldest not.' 
 
 And when he had spoken this, he saith 
 unto him, c Follow me.' 
 
 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the 
 disciple whom Jesus loved, following, which 
 also leaned on Jesus' breast at supper.

 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, c Lord, 
 and what shall this man do ? ' 
 
 Jesus saith unto him, 'If I will that he 
 tarry till I come, what is that to thee? 
 Follow thou me.' 
 
 After that Jesus was seen of above five 
 hundred brethren at once. And when they 
 saw him, they worshipped him, but some 
 doubted. And Jesus spake unto them, 
 saying, 'All power is given unto me in 
 heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and 
 teach all nations to observe all things what- 
 soever I have commanded you ; and lo, I 
 am with you alway, even unto the end of 
 the world.' 
 
 And Jesus led the disciples out as far 
 as to Bethany ; and he lifted up his hands 
 and blessed them. And it came to pass 
 while he blessed them, he was parted from 
 them and carried up into heaven. 
 
 And they worshipped him, and returned 
 to Jerusalem with great joy, and were con- 
 tinually in the temple praising and blessing 
 God.
