INTRODUCTION. When I sent out the messenger "How to Make Use of the Power Within" which I was inspired to write, in order to reach those who had not devel- oped the light that shines from within and could not realize the happiness that was theirs by divine right, I said, "If you call for me I will come again." I thank those of you who have made it possible for me to come before you again, as the little book was well received, and is still on its way trying to find those who have not known the light that never fails and that pervades all life. I mentioned then my hope to establish a humane park as a rest for horses who had served some one faithfully and when old and worn out deserved a rest from labor before they leave this plane. I have the promise now of quite a sum toward this institution and it is my intention to have con- trol of the same during my natural life and to se- cure funds by the sale of my books and otherwise, to make it a permanent institution, in connection with the boarding home for young men which I mention further on. These institutions I will place in the hands of other permanent public welfare societies as I only desire a life lease in them. If anyone who reads this book is interested in the subject,, having the means to donate something toward this good work, wishes to consult with the Author, they may do so by submitting their credentials and arranging for an interview. Very sincerely, THE AUTHOR. THE GIFT OF HEALING. One of the author's intentions is to have a farm for dumb animals as she has told you in her little book, "How to Make Use of the Power Within." And in the city to have a boarding home for young men with all the social conditions of a private home. The food for the home could be raised on the "Humane Farm/' and this would make the home self-supporting from the start; and any of the young men out of employment could find work temporarily on the farm. The author believes in prevention instead of cure for immorality. If these young men were to meet the young ladies before they got into the whirl of excitement, they would probably marry and never go wrong, for they would not have the experience of such a life nor the longing for lux- uries which they acquire from experience. Most of these young women have been brought up to moderation in their living. This book on spiritualism is to be sold to help along the work. We will have a large dormitory built on the farm as a free vacation home for aged people who will be permitted to bring their pets. For the author is not among those who believe that animals are spreaders of disease germs, for they are not allowed where contagious diseases are any more than human beings are. When a child, she brought home to her dear mother every broken-winged butterfly, or bird, or crippled animal, that she could find, and the mother taught her how to treat them for their ailment. And she still brings into her home every sick crea- THE GIFT OF HEALING. ture she can find and she has never contracted a contagious disease. The good spirits tell her that she will be granted three graces before she enters the higher grade of life, two of which she mentions here, when she has accomplished these two parts of her life's work, the third will be easily gained. She asks God to spe- cially favor all who secure her book and sends helpful thoughts to you all. THE SOCIAL EVIL. To you mothers who lay away your little ones, the author knows all the sorrow, and the feeling that you can no longer serve them, and keep them warm and protect them; the author loved her pets and cared for them in the same way that you loved your infants, and oh ! the sorrow of it she must sen$ away these creatures that she loved with all the intensity of her nature and feel that perhaps they were being ill-treated. She loved her home and pets, and she decided owing to the intemperance and abuse she was sub- jected to, that she must give up all, and go out into the world. Ill, broken in health and spirit, she would look at the golden sunset, she loved to look out over that beautiful green field (where her pets gathered before going to their rest) and watch the golden clouds turn to rose color and then purple before darkness came on. And she thought, why am I driven from my home, I am doing right here, why must I go out into the world? And the an- swer came, you are doing right but you are living for self, as those who are serving family and things they love are only working for self. You are fitted to do much good out in the world, and your gifts and understanding will be developed more and more as you do His work. She will not touch upon all she suffered and en- dured in sacrificing her loved ones, but will give a poem here which will express it for her. 11 THE GIFT OF HEALING. WHAT CHRIST SAID. I said, "Let me walk in the fields"; He said, "Nay, walk in the town" ; I said, "There are no flowers there" ; He said, "No flowers, but a crown." I said, "But the sky is black, There is nothing but noise and din" ; But He wept as He sent me back — "There is more," He said, "there is sin." I said, "But the air is thick, And fogs are veiling the sun" ; Lie answered, "Yet hearts are sick, And souls in the dark undone." I said, "I shall miss the light, And friends will miss me, they say" ; He answered me, "Choose tonight If I am to miss you or they." I pleaded for time to be given ; He said, "Is it hard to decide? It will not seem hard in heaven To have followed the steps of your Guide." I cast one look at the field, Then set my face to the town; He said, "My child, do you yield ; Will you leave the flowers for the crown?" Then into His hand went mine, And into my heart came He, And I walk in a light divine The path I had feared to see. George MacDonald, 1 824-1905. 12 THE GIFT OF HEALING. In giving up her loved creatures who depended upon her for their welfare, she gave up all that she cherished in an unhappy home and in parting with them and her home she gave up almost her life and her heart's blood. After sorrowing for months to gain the submission to His will, she asked God to place her, for she knew that all this sorrow was for her progression, and she said, "Not mine, but Thy will be done." The author has no intention of inflicting her per- sonal sorrows upon her readers, but she gives this side of her life to show the selfish ones who do not appreciate love for God's creatures. That God gave an all absorbing love for dumb animals to some, so that His lower creation would be cared for and given the attention He wished them to have; to some He has given love for children in the same intensity, and to others the love for the aged. So fate drove her out into a big city, with very little ahead of her for her immediate needs, and to what? She was physically unable to do hard work, and as the only work she understood was the hotel business, she entered that line of labor, until some- thing else would present itself. This brought her in contact with the women who had gone wrong, and many times she would think, why was I driven out of my little home to come in contact with these men and women? People who imagine they can save these women are greatly mistaken ; they only laugh at the re- formers. She invited many of them to call on her and induced them to tell her about their present life. This they were very willing to do, and she 13 THE GIFT OF HEALING. learned that there was a caste among them the same as in any other social life. Those who were not so well educated could not associate with those who were accomplished, nor could they command the same recompense, financially, as the others. Many times she tried to induce these handsome creatures to get employment and begin life anew and settle down and marry and become useful citi- zens. And they would say to her, "We like you for talking to us like this and we know you like us, and are interested in us, and if you can tell us where we can earn a hundred dollars a week or more, as we do now, we will go to work." Of course, there was nothing more to be said. The author has arrived at the conclusion that the only ones who reform are those who find them- selves. That is, something comes into their lives which brings about a willing change. As a rule, if these women marry, they return to their old life after a short time, and are found frequenting their old haunts while living with their husbands. To give you an illustration of how important these young women consider themselves. Several of them were discussing the marriage of one who had followed that profession for fifteen years ; one of them said, "Miss S did not do very well, did she? She married a man earning only thirty-five dollars a week." I said, "Don't you think that a woman of that stamp should consider herself for- tunate to get any man to marry her when he knows just what she is?" and they indignantly said, "Oh, I don't think so." In regard to the women who have gone wrong. 14 THE GIFT OF HEALING. No one can reform them; they are what they are from choice, and it is born in them. They will lie and pretend to reform and tell you that they have given it all up, and you will learn, from their inti- mate friends that they are frequenting their favorite meeting resorts the same as usual. They cannot deceive the author on this question, for the spirits showed her one of these reformed ( ?) women with a long-handled drag net swung over her shoulder and this interpreted meant she has the drag net out for men, and it was verified afterwards by some of her acquaintances. Some societies for the suppression of vice are paying young men good salaries, some of whom go out on the streets nights and try to induce these young women to solicit their acquaintance. This is very wrong, and is distinctly contrary to the prayer "Lead us not into temptation." SEGREGATION. Segregation by an unwritten law would be much more effectual, for if they were driven to live in the restricted section of the cities their parents and relatives would soon know the life they were liv- ing. This could be done by driving them out of every part of the city excepting that section, where they could be compelled to maintain orderly con- duct. These creatures have played at love making so much that deception has become a second self to them. They cannot sincerely love anything or anybody, and they prefer to lie and deceive even 15 THE GIFT OF HEALING. when the truth is much easier for them. This is the only conclusion to come to after several years of close contact with them. If they are to reform they must find themselves ; arrest and punishment does not change them. Most of these women were wronged by a lover under promise of marriage before they came to the city. The city life nor low wages never was the cause of their downfall, for you will find many young women working for low wages and rooming in attics, doing their sewing and laundry evenings, who never go wrong and will not, no matter how hard a time they have. They will endure it. It is the one that has started wrong who comes to the city to bury her trouble that we must keep from going any further in that direction, and that can be done by prevention. "The Working Girl Who Goes On Call." Many young women in all big cities are employed through the day, and are called evenings and any time of the night by messenger or otherwise to houses where they make the acquaintance of men. This could be prevented by the parents of many of them if they were aware of the lives their daugh- ters were leading, and if the segregated district was well guarded by police and agents of societies they could turn back any of the women "called" to that section of the city, as only those who roomed there would be allowed to enter that section. And as most of those who are "called" are keep- ing up a respectable appearance to their relatives 16 THE GIFT OF HEALING. and gentlemen friends, they would not room in the segregated section and they would be obliged to give up their immoral way of living. It is the fact that they can keep up an air of respectability under present conditions that induces many of them to remain in that way of living. The men they meet take them to dinners and they dine at the next table to the wealthiest and ride in automobiles, wear fine clothes and jewels and enjoy all the lux- uries of life ; but many of them would not lead this life if they could not keep it from their friends and under cover of respectability. The remedy is back to the soil where the daugh- ters could be kept at home until they are married or have arrived at the age when they are not so susceptible to this danger. Many of the working women who are leading a sporting life, marry sports, and, under cover of the marriage certificate entertain socially, men of wealth give dinners at these couples' homes, and young women, married and single, are invited to meet these men several times a week. And in this way these working girls acquire the desire for automobile rides, swell dinners and luxury. One of the oldest resorts was run in this man- ner, the husband bringing in the guests, and after a time they quarreled and separated and the wife, in order to continue the money-making business, was obliged to give the husband an allowance, and he was living with another woman supported by the wife. Death has since then ended that resort. Many of the young women pretend to their friends that they work, and they go out every day 17 THE GIFT OF HEALING. just as if they went to work. They go to some of the houses, where they pay a dollar a day for the privilege of remaining there to receive their calls from men or to "houses" where they are wanted. I am giving you every side of this question, so you will know just what you have to cope with. The author is telling you these facts so that you will fully understand that the police and societies for the suppression of vice can handle this subject only in a limited way. For if they suppress it in one direction it rises in a new form, for if you scatter them they take small apartments and enter- tain even more than they did before, as they are not under the rules of the one who runs the house, as they were before. You will find this subject in the Bible, and it probably will be found in all ages of the future. Prevention, in the form of education, will do much toward suppressing it, if the next generation is taught that health and womanliness is above every- thing else ; it will be one step toward it. Also give them things to love, for love is the tie that binds and the whole theme of nature. If some of the professional men could have their way, all creatures that people love would be ex- terminated and the next generation would be like so much machinery; the man or woman who has a pet to love him or her when they go to their home have something to love and bring them home. For many married men and women long for love as they do not get it from those they have chosen for their partners for life. And this little bird or ani- mal that runs to greet them with all the joy of its 18 THE GIFT OF HEALING. little heart gives them the love they do not get from the selfish one they live with. And it is love that makes the home life. If they do not get love in the home they usually go where they will get it. Every form of physical life must have love, from the little insect up to the largest bird or animal, and the human. Nature's laws are ruled by love, and God is love. As the daily papers are now discussing the social problem of progression, the author gives her ex- perience on this subject after several years of study and close contact with those who know personally, and are willing to tell of their own experience, as well as that of their many associates. Some of these say that they live with their parents or relatives and are among the sporting set, and their parents are ignorant of the fact. It is the hope of the writer that this book will go into many homes, and place this subject before many parents, and in this way accomplish much good. "The Call House." There is in all big cities what is termed a "Call House," where many young women room and board. They are not allowed to receive any callers at this house, as the place does not conflict with the law by "doing business." This proprietor charges from twelve to fifteen dollars per week to each boarder; the boarders have the privilege of being called by telephone or messenger to any house that wishes them to entertain men, day or night. 19 THE GIFT OF HEALING. They are called to houses of ill repute or private apartments or lodging houses that do "some busi- ness" in this line. At some of these houses where they are "called" the girls are expected to drink wine, as the greatest profit to the "landlady" is on the wine and other drinks. Many of the girls do not like drink and refuse to take it at first, but if they do not drink they will not be "called" again, as more money can be made when the girl drinks a great deal. I am told by some of these girls that some men will spend from $25 to $150 in a night, just for wine, and the girls try to learn to drink so as to become popular with all concerned, as they do not make much if they are only called to the places where they do not have to drink, as it is only the "cheap places" that do not sell wine. In this way the girls acquire the drink habit, then when they become drunkards the "houses" do not call for them, as they are not fit to present to their gentlemen callers, as these men believe that these girls are nurses, bookkeepers, artists, musical students, etc., and tell their men friends how they have met the music student, etc. They think they ;are meeting some one who has never been around ; that this student, etc., was induced to come in answer to this call, especially for them. When all the time the "select party" is a "Call House" pro- duct. These young women laugh over the credulity of the men and say, "Wouldn't you think that they would know that if we could be called for a man 20 THE GIFT OF HEALING. that we never saw that we also could be called for anyone ?" I am telling this, so you will know every side of this question and how much there is to guard against. I had lived in the city many years and never knew that there was such an institution as a "Call House" until I met one of the supposed to be "music students" and I asked her where she was stopping and she laughingly said in one of the "swellest call houses in the city." I said,, "What kind of a house is that?" and she explained it to me to my amazement and enjoyed my astonish- ment very much. If mothers could see this side of life they would never consent to their daughters going away, from home, and the fact that some one may go with her does not make any difference, as we find sisters to- gether in these houses and several girls from the same city or state who have known each other for years. Of course they will not tell on each other. If you could see these girls after two or three years of dissipation you would prefer to see your child in her grave than to live the life she is living, for when she becomes addicted to drink she is an outcast, for none of the "Houses" will receive her, as she is likely to attract attention toward the house. And her next step is to solicit men on the street, and then the career of this poor "moth" is very swift down the scale of life, as part of the time she starves and is turned out of her boarding place for not paying and for creating a disturbance. And this beautiful child of somebody's is a piti- ful wreck that no one can do anything for, because 21 THE GIFT OF HEALING. she will not do any different. And to help her by giving her money is only to give her money to buy drink with, and if anyone allows her to visit them she is likely to call on them when intoxicated, and people who see her call say you are associating with low people. To try to help them is to drag yourself down in public opinion, so she is shut out all together. Usually she goes from bad to worse. She finds herself in the street starving, no home and without a friend. She is too far gone to think of work and as a last resort turns to the river, and death is the best friend for her. The morning paper tells of finding a woman's body in the river or harbor, and perhaps a dear mother waits and longs for the return of her darling child, and she may never know how that dear one suffered. And I think if that dear mother had only known the danger there was for her child perhaps she would be with her today and be a help to her instead of a sorrow. This is why I am anxious to place this awful subject before you in a way that will make you fully understand the danger that any or all young girls are in who are away from home. They are free to go where they will, and as bachelor girls they have no delicacy in entering this life, no more than several young men do who go out together, when they go to saloons or other resorts. I hope I may be inspired to make you see this awful situation in its proper light. I wish it were possible to have you see some of these beautiful girls as I see them very often, cast off by first one 22 T,HE GIFT OF HEALING. lover and then another, trying to find some man to support them. When I ask them what their mother thinks they are doing, they say, "Oh, she thinks I am a stenographer or bookkeeper." But it won't be long before "mother" must know, for she is a confirmed drunkard and must have strong drink the first thing in the morning, and when they reach that condition they cannot hide it from anyone any longer. Some of them marry and bring children into the world, and there is nothing so pitiful as a child with a drunken mother, beside the suffering it en- dures from neglect in the home. Every child loves its mother, and its pride is hurt by other children taunting it about its awful mother. People who live in comfortable and pleasant con- ditions cannot realize how much there is to be thankful for. If they should go into a Criminal Court a few mornings they would soon know what suffering is. There you will find young men and women being tried for various crimes, and it will make your heart ache to hear them sentenced to different prisons for short or long terms. And you feel, if you only could be allowed to do something for them, but it would be of no use for you to try, for many others have tried before you saw them, and, like the "Moth and the Flame," these poor human moths return again and again until judges and officials know that they must be sent away. The poor immigrant or the girls brought up in humble circumstances are seldom among those who live immoral lives, for the poor girls are willing to work and hope to marry and have a home of their THE GIFT OF HEALING. own to take care of. It is the pampered daughter of parents who try to live above their means and are brought up to false ideas of their importance. That is, they are led to believe that with their edu- cation and good looks, that they can marry wealth, and they will not look at an honest working man, and when they find that they cannot find anyone who is wealthy to marry them they decide to have luxury without marrying. The girl who is willing to marry the man she loves and is willing to work with him to establish a respectable home is much happier than her foolish sister who prefers luxury and ease to happiness, for she is always unhappy. She is in constant fear of coming to want, for if she has a man that is sup- porting her she knows that she may lose him most any day, for generally he is a sport and is apt to leave her for the first pretty face he meets, and usually she is left without a dollar and without a home. And as she grows older her chances of find- ing another man friend are few, and altogether life is a very discouraging proposition for her. Save the Boys. Another reason for the segregated district is that young boys are sent to deliver groceries and other goods to houses and apartments of ill repute, and the women living there tell them all about their manner of living, nothing is sacred to those who are dissipated, and you will hear these young boys remark that "there are no good girls." You cannot wonder that they think so when you consider how many of these abandoned creatures 24 THE GIFT OF HEALING. there are in large cities and the boys from the age of sixteen years upwards are sent to their homes every week to deliver goods. If we had the segre- gated district we could prevent boys under age from delivering in that section. And in this way they would not know these harmful creatures. Neither Do I Condemn Thee. The women of the first-class establishments are not the sort to advertise themselves in this manner ; they keep their business to themselves, and anyone going there would not know that they were in an immoral business. And no man or woman who is not well known there will be admitted. If a new comer gets into one of these houses they must be introduced there by one who is well known by the proprietor. The segregated district should have a chapel and lectures daily; this would attract them, and the excuse to get them to come in would be to ask their aid toward different charities, the care of infants, the aged, etc. The lecturer should ignore their mode of living, simply give talks on the life of Christ and the saints and topics of the day; the lecturer should take the stand that Christ did, "Neither do I condemn thee." Many people say to me "Why do you not have a home for girls?" There are many homes for girls, and I want to save the boys from becoming "sports," for once they enter the sporting life they do not care to become family men. They can have all the sociability without marrying and they do not want the responsibility, so if we can keep them 25 THE GIFT OF HEALING. from losing the ideals they received from their home influences, then we will have more and hap- pier marriages, saving the girls will not make do- mestic life if there are no good men to marry them. The man and woman who have a family to care for and love are not likely to enter the sporting life, and it is the sporting life that is the cause of so many early deaths. These women spend more money on their hair dressing, manicuring and "facial massage" than the little working girl earns in a week. And the good little working girl who is forced to dress within her means is not invited out to dinners, rides, etc., as her sporty sister is ; for the sporty sister indulges in drink and is more amusing and interesting and is playing her part in the game of life, the same as the actress or other professionals are. They usually brag of their home life and pose as heiresses, princesses, or coming from families of wealth, and their men friends think they have found a wonderful prize for an acquaintance, but if they should investigate the home life of those who brag the most, they would find that they came from the commonest people and are so poor that they have hardly a chair to sit on and the whole family must work to eke out a living. Many of these women become drunkards, and then they are turned out of the first-class places, and then their course downward is swift, and they frequent low-grade drinking resorts and associate with the lowest type of men in hopes to get a living, for the strongest of them will starve before they will work. 26 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Hundreds of beautiful girls every year become victims of the drink habit and very often of the opium habit. I am telling this to you mothers so that you will look into the lives of your daughters, many of them who have very little education pre- tend when visiting their parents that they are book- keepers or holding other high positions that they possibly could not fill, and they consider work way beneath them. Consumption claims many of them for its victim, as when they are on their downward course, they do not have nourishing food, and the drink habit soon undermines their health ; many of them end their own lives rather than starve, and others end in prison and the hospital. You, mothers should save them from this by learn- ing all yoa can of this side of life, for if you are ig- norant of this awful situation, you can not help your children and if you find that they have gone wrong do not turn against them, as you hope that the heavenly Father will not turn against you. Many times this condition like the drink habit is prenatal, owing to some unguarded thought of the mother before the child was born. The mother may have been annoyed by some one who drank, or had gone wrong and she was horrified at the thought; all these things will in- fluence the embryo mind. A real mother will never turn against her child, no matter how low down life's scale he or she goes, but will study the case and help them all she can. The daily papers are doing all they can to edu- 27 THE GIFT OF HEALING. cate the public in regard to the suppression of vice and all who study this matter, must eliminate the sensational side of the question and realize that sup- pression is impossible, but that individual, preven- tion is the only real good. I will give you an example of how your son may be dragged down and it will make your blood boil as it did mine when I witnessed it. I was out in front of my home one night about ten o'clock when a young couple came along. They were under twenty years of age ; the girl was stylishly dressed and carried a silver hand bag, she turned suddenly, and struck the boy in the face with the hand bag several times and made him turn and go back toward where they came from and compelled him to put his arm around her and she had her arm around him. Evidently she wanted more drink and the boy was being ruled by her. Think of this you mothers, and keep your sons at home if you possibly can. It is better to work in their home town for small wages and be of some account in a community than to be lost in the crowds of a big city with more pay, but more expense. And the lonely life that a stranger has in a crowded city, for one can be more alone in a crowded city than in a forest. When your sons or daughters err do not turn them out as many do, but think this is my little baby that I held in my arms and I will love it so much that I will reclaim it. If you could see these women victims of the drink habit as I have seen 28 THE GIFT OF HEALING. them, beautiful girls strong and able to do some kind of work, but with only a thought of where they will get money for more drink. I very often take one of these in to my home. I find them without money and no place to stay in, turned out of their room, because they could not pay rent, for none of them look ahead and think I will need this money for my room rent, but drink until they haven't a cent left, and men who frequent the eating and drinking places that they do, most always take the advantage of their weakness. They hear of me in some way and come to me crying and tell me that they have no place to go, and I to save the mother from hearing of this, take them in for a few weeks and start them out again ; only to hear in a short time that they are down and out again and their mother living in a near by state wholly unconscious of the pitiable conditon her dear child is in. The mother thinks she is working as steno- grapher or clerk when instead she has been under the protection of a man who has cast her off because she drank and associated with the lowest men in the drinking places who hang around waiting for the "down and outs" to take advantage of their weakness. Some of them attach themselves to married men and when the man tries to break away from them they threaten him with exposure if he does not come back to them and the man hoping that fate will find a way out of the difficulty without ex- posure and disgrace to his family submits to all 29 THE GIFT OF HEALING. sorts of abuse, for some of them strike, scratch and blacken the eyes of the victim who was attracted by their good looks. Wives are to blame in a measure for this, for if a woman was the chum she should be to her hus- band he could go to her and tell her of the trouble and she could protect him from this, as he would not fear exposure to her. A husband and wife are in duty bound to protect each other, as they take the place toward each other that the parents did and of course they could look to their parents to help them out of trouble. A woman should make the same allowance for a husband that she would for her brother and eliminate the jealousy, and see this matter in its proper light. You know you may love roses and bring them home with you but this does not prevent you from admiring the sweet little violets and other flowers, but all the time the rose is the one to you and you want it with you and it is the same with the hus- band, you are the one. One young working woman entertained a mar- ried man for nearly twenty years, and he stopped calling on her because he was ill, but as he could still be about, the woman became furious and went to his wife and told her that she believed him single all these years and that he had called on her all that time. The wife was overcome by the story but said to the girl, "He has been the best husband in the world and I want you to promise me that you will never tell him that you have told me this. He is ill and I am going with him to a water cure 30 THE GIFT OF HEALING. resort and I do not think he will live to come back, and I do not want him to know that I knew this before he died." Just think of the nobility of character of that wife, she suffered in silence and had pity for him ; that is real love. This happened eight years ago and last month I saw a notice of his death in the daily papers. The Author sometimes casts a thought back to the little farmstead and the dear pets she was obliged to give up and thinks, I gave them all up to gain this knowledge of the dark side of life. It is awful but I could not help in this cause and do good if I did not know all the evil side of life and much good will come from this knowledge, as we will know how to cope with it. Good will come from it, just as the most beautiful flowers grow from filth. All is good. The spirits teach us that we all belong to God that a wife or husband is loaned us for the time be- ing to fulfill His purpose here and aid progression. We are given a certain amount of happiness here, so that it will not seem to be all duty and when any man or woman attempts to rule another on account of jealousy and spite, he or she will be punished to show them that the one they are spitefully controll- ing belongs to Him. And that person is the innocent means used to punish them and bring them to real- ize that He is supreme for it is only through that one that they can be made to suffer most and he is used as the means of punishment. So the only way to keep your mate with you is not to send evil 31 THE GIFT OF HEALING. thoughts after him or her every step they take; if you are in constant fear of some one taking them from you, you are tied body and soul to them and you can not think good thoughts. You are shutting out all the beautiful things God placed here for your pleasure and progression, for one who is not worth it. We should realize that we are a part of the whole eternal plan, and not narrow ourselves down to seeing and thinking of one human being. That is making idols to our- selves and God destroys idols of any kind that are worshipped. Many a good man has been drawn into an alliance of this kind with the very best intentions on his part ; he accidentally meets some young woman who pretends to have been wronged and has not known any other man and that she is without work and doesn't know what she will do and he pities her and heroically offers to help her, thinking how cruel one of his sex has been to her, and before he real- izes it she has a hold on him and it is difficult to break away. Proverbs. Chapter 16. 4. "The Lord hath made all things for Himself; yea even the wicked for the day of evil." The Author was reluctant to bring the social evil subject into this book, she thought what has that to do with healing and the spirits answered, you must touch upon all subjects pertaining to life as the Bible does. And as you have the necessary knowledge on this subject, you must bring it into 32 THE GIFT OF HEALING. the book as it is for the healing of the soul and to save other souls from that course, which means only suffering for them and unfits them for the natural course of life. In regard to the social evil. A State or munici- pality has no right to drive these women out unless they have a home supported by the State to take them to, until employment can be found for them. They are not competent to do any kind of work and it is unmerciful to drive them out, as there is not employment enough for them all. Women can help to make work for the unem- ployed by refusing to wear any kind of fur except- ing that manufactured by hand, as this would in- crease the work in mills and also the work for those who sew for a living. And the merciless trappers ■who inflict suffering on helpless dumb animals could find work in these factories. The author is sincere in this work, as her love for the helpless of any form of life is the all absorbing thought of her existence. (Read Chapter 9 of Judith in regard to women.) To give you an instance why the women should not be scattered in the residential quarters : A little news boy said to me, the lady across the street sent me on an errand and gave me a dollar and a half for going. I said what is the matter with her. He said, "she is drunk, she hasn't any clothes on." You can see what an education this boy is getting, his mother works to support her children. This could not happen in a segregated district. I was talking with a young woman a short time 33 THE GIFT OF HEALING. ago, explaining how we have a right to ask for prosperity as Jesus says, "Do ye not give good gifts to your children" and she said, "They would not answer my prayers, I am done for, there is no sal- vation for me." And I told her the story of the lost sheep and I said, some day you will settle down and become a useful citizen. You are just the kind that can be of use in the world for one must have knowledge to be able to point out the danger to others. I said to her, if I ever get my "Home for Young Men," I will have professional men lecture there to tell these stories to my flock, just as Jesus did to his disciples and I will invite just such wo- men as you .there. "The Red Door." I do not advocate legalizing the Red Light dis- trict as this is recognizing them and making them feel that they are in the right to a certain extent, so it is best to ignore their existence and restrict them as far as possible. The social workers can aid the police in this and their agents, both men and women can keep new comers away. It could be handled much easier this way than at present for the new comers will take a chance of going to these places, thinking that the police have not located them all, and it is difficult to locate them all after scattering them all over a big city ; for many of them go to the suburbs to live and it takes some time to locate them again. But they notify their friends where they are located and they can con- tinue in the business in this way. 34 THE GIFT OF HEALING. The most of these women are deeply in debt as they buy clothing, jewelry and everything- they need of men who call at these "houses" with samples to sell them goods on the installment plan, and then if business is dull, as it very often is, as they cease to attract after a while and they are deeply in debt and without money, also without friends, as the most of them are so grasping, that they will not assist another of their associates. Widowed mothers with several children to sup- port, must work during the day, and their little girls are on the streets after school hours, wholly unpro- tected. These young girls and boys become way- ward and you can go out any evening on the differ- ent streets and see two or three couples, girls and boys from twelve to sixteen years of age, convers- ing in loud voices on the most obscene subjects. And their mothers do not realize that they are be- ginning a very bad career. These mothers should be pensioned ; it would be much better to permit the mothers to be with their children than for the city or state to pay their board in an asylum or lay out the money for suppression of vice ; by heading off this menace in many directions it will be reduced to a minimum. Dress. Every mother should insist on a modest manner of dress for her daughters. Young women in busi- ness should not be allowed to wear jewelry and should dress their hair in as plain a style as possible and when they go to their homes, they may dress 35 THE GIFT OF HEALING. as they wish. But to wear jewels in shops and ex- travagant clothing is to tempt those who cannot af- ford it to go into debt to get the same apparel, and as their income does not permit this extrava- gance, they must economize on their supply of food and this undermines their health. And they cannot give the best there is in them to their duties if their health is poor. And the girl who is wearing a business suit is lielping her poorer sister and in this way doing her duty toward her fellow beings. The employers of all large stores should insist that their employees should wear business apparel and no jewelry. They would not permit the men to go behind their counters in evening dress, why should they tolerate this in women? Every one of these young women should consider herself a part of the establishment she is working for, and aim to be an honor to it, and she will show her breeding by being a lady in her deportment and -dress, and not wear exaggeration of any style. If she wears a slit skirt for convenience in walking let it be a short slit with nearly a quarter of a yard flap, so the slit is not in evidence. It was placed there for comfort in walking and not for show. If we will be careful in our deportment, men will not need to legislate to prevent women from exposing themselves unnecessarily. It is a shame to the sex to read that many of the States have been obliged to legislate against immoral dressing, and danger- ous hatpins. It does not go a long way toward con- vincing men that women are capable of ruling 36 THE GIFT OF HEALING. states by the ballot or otherwise. Every woman should feel her importance, from the little cash girl up to the high salaried woman and she must fill her part to the credit of all. A young lady that is modest will not display her attractions to the coarse man on the streets, if she has any charms they should be displayed to the near and dear friends of her immediate circle, who will not make vulgar remarks about her as the vulgar men of the street do. Ecclesiticus, chapter 9: 43. The Father waketh for his daughter when no man knoweth ; and the care for her taketh away sleep ; when she is young, lest she pass away the> flower of her age and being married lest she be; hated: (Also 10th). >, 11. Keep a sure watch over a shameless daugh- ter, lest she make thee a laughing-stock to thine enemies, and a by word in the city, and a reproach among the people and make thee ashamed before the multitude. St. Luke, Chapter 8. 2. And certain women which had been healed of evil spirits and infirmities, Mary called Magdalene, out of whom seven devils were cast. I do not intend to place this subject before you in a sensational light, there is much that I have learned that I cannot publish, but I have found that it is not the uneducated or uncultivated that are among the immoral, for the above mentioned cling to religion and their early training. Also I find that there is very little "White Slav- 37 THE GIFT OF HEALING. ery." A daughter or wife will go astray and on be- ing found will tell her friends that she was held against her will, so as to make herself appear right in their estimation and refuses to prosecute so as to save the family. name. This is subterfuge, they went voluntarily and tell this story to get sympathy instead of blame. LET HIM WHO HATH NOT SINNED CAST THE FIRST STONE, Chapter 8, 2. And early in the morning He came again into the temple and all the people came unto Him; and He sat down and taught them. 3. And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto Him a woman, taken in adultery. 5. Now Moses in the law commanded us that such should be stoned but what sayest thou? 6. This they said, tempting Him, that they might accuse Him. But Jesus stooped down and with His finger wrote on the ground as though He heard not. 7. So when they continued asking Him he lifted up Himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her." 8. And again He stooped down and wrote on the ground. Chapter 6, 9. And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last ; and Jesus was left alone and the woman standing in the midst. 10. When Jesus had lifted up Himself and saw 38 THE GIFT OF HEALING. none but the woman He said unto her, woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man con- demned thee? II. She said, "No man, Lord," and Jesus said, unto her, Neither do I condemn thee, go and sin no more. Why do I place all these subjects in this book? Because all the ways of living are religion and of God. The Bible teaches God, and all the best ways of living. I can not copy the passages in the Bible, mentioning the social evil for they would be too offensive for the twentieth century critics to enter- tain, as this subject is printed in plain English and is not handled with gloves. To learn what I have written here I walked through all the scorching sorrow and darkness of sin, but I held my head up and with my eyes toward what might be attained further on, by saving the awful heartache to many mothers, which must come to them through the downfall of a dear child that they would gladly lay down their life for. "I walked in a light divine The path I had feared to see." WHEN MY WORK IS DONE. Though the call to the wilds is strong And the fields I long for are green, My heart is full of the song, Of duty so plain to be seen. 39 THE GIFT OF HEALING. I can hear His voice so dear, Telling me 'tis bright just ahead, That I have nothing to fear, To follow where He has lead. My heart a glad song is singing, When I think of the fields so fair, And the birds and butterflies winging, And the daisies and field flowers there. And I know that sometime in the future, The day that I've longed for will come, That I'll go back to the flowers and nature, And hear His voice saying, "Well Done." (End of Part One) 40 Part II THE GIFT OF HEALING. SPIRITUALISM. It is the author's earnest desire to serve her fel- low beings and if she can point out the way to the laws of nature and God, to anyone, she will feel that she has fulfilled her purpose to serve. She has no desire to lead, for her little light is only one of the stars in the sky of life, and she is but an echo of the Master teacher who has passed from the view of the physical eyes, but whose noble life lights all the world, for without Christianity the animal side of nature would prevail. If you will consider the sacrifice He made, to prove the spirit side of life you will realize how real spirit is. It is this sacrifice, that stands out so clear today and causes so many to acknowledge Flim, and oh ! the pity of it all, to think that He was so persecuted, for doing good to the sick, and help- less, it makes one feel, that if they only could give up their life to make amends for all the persecution and cruelty that He suffered ; and yet, every time a brother or sister is persecuted to-day, we are again crucifying Christ. He proves this, in His words to St. Paul, "Saul, Saul! why persecuteth thou me?" The medical profession, and the heads of many religions, are persecuting Christ through his fellow- men, and disciples, the faith curists and spiritual science healers. Spiritualism was the first religion, THE GIFT OF HEALING. as the old and new Testaments prove and it will in time be the only religion all over the world. I have given you, only parts of the different chapters proving spiritualism, and Psychic power and proph- ecy, and I would advise my readers, to write the numbers of the different chapters mentioned here and read them in full and they will find much more to prove my statement, as well as learn more of the self-sacrificing Christ, who came to give us proof of spirit return. Matthew, Chapter 5-12, 12th Verse. Rejoice and be exceeding glad, for great is your reward in heaven ; for so persecuted they the pro- phets which came before you.} Christ says we are to rejoice, when we are perse- cuted for being healers, mediums and psychics, and we know that this same persecution leads others to think and to study the teachings of Christ, and also to assist us to gain the freedom to practice our belief. Joel, Chapter 2, Verse 28. And it shall come to pass, afterward, that I will pour out my spirit, upon all flesh, and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions. This chapter proves that the greatest gift that can be bestowed upon anyone by the Lord is to be a seer, psychic or prophet. Spiritualism teaches us the law of nature which 44 THE GIFT OF HEALING. is physical and spirit combined, destroy a living being and the spirit has left and only matter re- mains, destroy the tree and the God life departs and leaves only wood. This proves that nature is spirit life, that without spirit nothing would exist, spirit is the motive power, for all is inanimate, without the eternal spark, life. You can not consider nature without spirit, for the two are inseparable, unless the tie is severed by what we call death, which is when the spirit has progressed as far as it can in the physical form which holds it for the present. Spiritualism as Jesus Lived and Practised It. F Reader, do you doubt spiritualism? Then read the life and teachings of Jesus, and you will find that he healed and prophesied through the spirit power that God had given him and he taught his disciples to use the power that belongs to every- body, by divine right. Spiritualism embodies everything that is good and true and of high principle.! Those who use the power to defraud and for gain are like the lying prophets of the old testa- ment, who were a lot of mad men thirsting for blood and vengeance. If the law of Moses had been sufficient, there would have been no necessity of a Christ to bring about reform, as they had prophets and seers, but they used their psychic power for gain. Tests, and all business pertaining to spiritualism and mediums, should be done in separate halls ; the 45 THE GIFT OF HEALING. church or temple should be devoted to lectures and sermons, taken from the life of Jesus and the saints as given in the New Testament, for the greatest proof of materialization and spirit messages is given in the New Testament. You may say "Of what use is spiritualism?" It is a great consolation to know that life does not end here, that the spirit is only placed in the body so that it may grow and progress in a physical world and be fitted to go to a higher sphere, just as one must go from a school to one of a higher grade. Spiritualism is of great assistance to us here in this world, as those in the spirit Avorld have pro- gressed and can advise us to our advantage on business and on all the affairs of life. If in danger, we are warned, if there is illness coming upon us we are warned, and told what the outcome will be, whether to permit a surgical operation or not, or to prepare for death. A Warning to Investigators of Spiritualism. I will give you good advice here in regard to mediums. Shun the mediums that say "You may ask questions" before giving you a sitting. They should give you what they get without any ques- tions, and never ask a medium how to invest money. Find your place of investment first, and if you want a medium's advice as to whether that is a good way to invest, simply ask, "Will I do in re- gard to business what I have planned?" In this way they will not try to get your money away from you, for many who are not psychics take up mediumship to defraud the unsuspecting. 46 THE GIFT OF HEALING. And some who are good mediums, who feel that they do not take money fast enough, negotiate with some one who has bogus stocks or 'real estate schemes and in this way get all the money their victim has and then they disappear. Spiritualists are organizing now and registering their psychics and mediums and in this way they can weed out the frauds and then the law can take hold of those who can not show their certificate from the spiritual association. And every spiritua- list should assist in denouncing the fakes, as it is an offence to heaven to permit fraud in the name of spirit, and they can not be too severely dealt with. The Author consulted a medium a short time ago just to see if she was real and the medium did not ask a question but told her just what was on her mind and the outcome. Also told her she would write a book that her work would reach world wide. The work I hope to do, I have told you of in this book, and the success for this book I have yet to learn, as I am writing it now. She also told me of a band of spirits that came with me, who had told me in my own home to write and to do the work I hope to do. These are things the medium could not know, as she could not know that the spirits had told me in my home. You will notice in the verses I have copied from the Bible that the prophets always tell the person what they came to see them about. Jesus did this also; without asking questions He told the woman who went with a pitcher to get water that she had 47 THE GIFT OF HEALING. many husbands, and she was frightened, as it was true. «« Some male mediums make love to women who go to them for advice, so they can get their money away from them. They even go so far as to marry women in every State so as to get their money and then leave them. - The Holy Ghost. St. John, 26, Chap. 14 But the comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and bring all things to your remembrance whatsoever I have said unto you. Chap. 15, 16. Ye have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in My name He may give it to you. 17. If the world hate you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19. If ye were of the world, the world would love his own; but because ye are not of the world, but I have chosen you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you. 20. Remember the word I have said unto you, the servant is not greater than his Lord. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will also keep yours. 26. But when the "comforter" is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the 48 THE GIFT OF HEALING. spirit of the truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me. Chap. 16, 7. Nevertheless I tell you the truth ; it is expedient for you that I go away, for if I go not away, the comforter will not come unto you ; but if I depart I will send him unto you. 8. And when He is come, He will reprove the world of sin and of righteousness and of judgment. 13. Howbeit, when Fie, the Spirit of Truth, is come, He will guide you into all truth; but what- soever He shall hear, that shall He speak; and He will show you things to come. 14. He shall glorify Me; for He shall receive of Mine and shall shew it unto you. I. Samuel, 1-6. And the spirit of the Lord will come upon thee and thou shalt prophesy with them and shalt be turned into another man. 7. And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that do as occasion serve thee, for God is with thee. II. And it came to pass when all that knew Him before times saw that behold, He prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, "What is this that is come unto the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?" In Samuel, Chap. 10-6. — "Thou shalt be turned in to another man," is the trance condition, and change which takes place when a spirit controls the medium. Also, "When these signs are come unto thee." This means to give out whatever the spirits give you, for God has sent the Holy Ghost to you. We have in this verse of Chapter 16, 13, of St. 49 THE GIFT OF HEALING. John, in regard to the Holy Ghost, which is spoken of as the Comforter, "Howbeit when He the Spirit of Truth is come, He will guide you into all truth, but whatsoever He shall hear that shall He speak; and He will shew you things to come." When the Spirit of Truth or the Holy Ghost has come to a psychic, He guides the psychic and gives to the medium or psychic that which is given to him from the spirit side of life and that which is from the Holy Spirit can be nothing but the truth, for if the psychic is real, and has received the "Com- forter," whatever he or she receives must be the truth, for only the truth can come from God. Then Christ says of the "Comforter," He will show you things to come. This line proves that the "Holy Ghost" will foretell the future to the psychic. All real psychics know this to be a fact I. have often received information which was sometimes verified in a few hours ; other information was veri- fied in days, months or years, according to the time it took to bring about what was predicted. The Acts, 6-39. But if it be of God, ye cannot overthrow it, lest haply ye be found even to fight against God. ^ Spiritualism is of God, and it can not be over- thrown, as its glorious mission is reaching every part of the world, and in America alone there are over ten million of this following, and thousands are of this belief that do not profess it, nevertheless our numbers are increasing steadily and surely. The Acts, 6-5. And the saying pleased the whole multitude; and they chose Stephen, a man full of 50 THE GIFT OF HEALING. faith and of the Holy Ghost and Philip and Pro- chorus, and Mecanor and Timor and Parmenas and Nicolas, a proselyte of Antioch. 6. Whom they set before the Apostles and when they prayed they laid their hands on them. 7. And the word of God increased ; and the num- ber of the disciples multiplied in Jerusalem greatly and a great company of the priests were obedient to the faith. 8. And Stephen full of faith and power did great wonders and miracles among the people. 10. And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the Spirit by which he spake. 11. Then they suborned men, which said, we have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses and against God. 51. Ye stiff necked and uncircumsized in heart and ears, ye do always resist the "Holy Ghost," as your fathers did, so do ye. 52. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One of whom ye have been now the betrayers and mur- derers. 53. Who have received the law by the disposi- tion of Angels and have not kept it. 55. But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. 56. And said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God." 57. Then they cried out with a loud voice and 51 THE GIFT OF HEALING. stopped their ears and ran upon him with one ac- cord. 58. And cast him out of the city and stoned him. And the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet whose name was Saul. 59. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God and saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my spirit." 60. And he kneeled down and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, lay not this sin to their charge," and when he had said this he fell asleep. The Acts, Chap. 8-1. And Saul was consenting unto his death. And at that time there was great persecution against the church which was at Jeru- salem, and they were all scattered abroad through- out the regions of Judea and Samaria, except the apostles. 2. And devout men carried Stephen to his burial and made great lamentations over him. 3. As for Saul, he made havoc of the church, entering every house and hailing men and women and committing them to prison. "This Saul is the man upon whom the Holy Ghost suddenly descended while he was on his way to persecute more of the followers of Christ, then lie became a prophet and was named Paul and followed Christ's footsteps ever after. Everyone should read the beautiful epistles of Paul to his fol- lowers and they will learn what a great change the gift of prophecy and of the "Holy Ghost" can make in a man. One would never dream that the awful man Saul who was determined to destroy every one who believed in Christ can be the holy man that Paul became after he received the gift of prophecy. 52 THE GIFT OF HEALING. And it is the same with all psychics ; they feel that a new world has opened for them, the veil has been lifted and they have been let into the friendship and partnership of God, and they become holy with the responsibility of this new life teeming with all the wealth of love that only God can give to mortals through the Holy Ghost. Daniel, Chap. 3-21. ''And the king commanded that these men be bound and their coats, their hosen and their hats, and their other garments and they be cast into the midst of the burning fiery furnace." 23. "And these three men, Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego, fell down bound into the midst of the fiery furnace." 24. ''Then Nebuchadnezzar, the king, was aston- ished, and rose up in haste, and said unto the coun- sellors, 'Did not we cast three men bound into the midst of the fire?' They said, 'True, O King.' " 25. "He said to them, T see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.' " 26. "Then the king came near the fiery furnace, and spake, and said, 'Shadrach, Mesach and Abed- nego, ye servants of the most high God, come forth, and come hither.' Then they came forth out of the midst of the fire." 2.7. "And the princes, governors and captains and all gathered there saw these men upon whose bodies the fire had no power, nor was a hair of their heads singed, neither were their coats changed, nor smell of fire had passed them." 53 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 28. "Then said the king, 'Blessed be the God of these men, who hath sent His angel and delivered His servants that trusted in Him/ " 29. "Because there is no other God that can de- liver after this sort." God's emissary, an angel, announced the coming birth of Christ, this is spiritualism and prophesy, just as we have it today, a spirit announces some- thing about to take place to a medium or psychic, and it is given to the person or persons for whom it is intended; the shepherds who saw the star of Bethlehem were ordinary men and the vision of the birth of the Christ child was given to them in a trance or vision, by the same process that we re- ceive messages in this century. The only differ- ence is that they were honest, God fearing men and they were respected for the gift of prophecy, which they possessed, and all through the Bible you will find that they made use of this gift in religion and business, and in every walk of life, and the kings also had their favorite prophets to consult whenever necessary. 54 Invocation. Let me live today as if it was my last day on this earth, and let my attitude toward my loved ones and friends and the whole world at large be what I would want it to be on my last day, in expressing the God spirit within. THE GIFT OF HEALING. PROGRESSION. Spiritualism prepares us for the continuation of our life after we leave the earth plane, and enables us to avoid much suffering and delay of the progres- sion which must take place, for we must learn there, just as we must learn to walk here. If we understand that we have left the natural life for the spiritual we will soon be placed where we will progress, but if we still think we are living in the natural life we will refuse all assistance and wander around alone trying to make out what has happened to us. But by understanding that the spirit is the real, instead of the temporary life, we will soon be at home there, and meet those whom we have known before. Spiritualism fits us for this natural progression, and after we have left the casket or shell, which the real self, the spirit, has inhabited we are at home in the new sphere of life, and are not confused and lost for a long time as many poor souls are. Spirit works through physical force, if people had progressed to a high degree we would have no need of a humane society, because a soul that has pro- gressed is all kindness to even/ form of life, animal or vegetable. When the world has reached this stage of pro- gression the Humane Societies' work will be to prevent disease and heal. 57 THE GIFT OF HEALING. It is strange that the old religions do not wake up and teach humane kindness in their Sunday Schools. A child that is taught not to destroy the life of any animal or destroy any vegetation need- lessly, and to be equally considerate of the feelings of its parents and friends, will make a very desirable citizen. All of the later day religions and humane societies are following these teachings. A boy or girl taught to observe the rights of all of God's creatures will not desert their religion and God as soon as they grow up, for if they are taught that they owe a duty to all that God has created their religion is with them everywhere they go; they have not left it behind them in a church, for the religion of love and humane kindness we take with us everywhere and have use for it always. It is a crime to teach a child that the beautiful living creatures we see around us everywhere were only made to destroy, for sport. Instead teach them to photograph the different forms of animal life ; their collection may be of much value to them in time to come. Have them write upon the habits of each creature they have photographed, take one of the little feathers and see how perfectly and beautifully it is formed and how perfect the bird or animal is, and how much thought the creative mind, God, has used in perfecting it. To go hunt- ing with a camera, instead of a gun, is instructive and beneficial, as the time passed in the open air and forest is good for old and young, and helpless young are not left to starve as they are when a boy goes gunning. The author has no sympathy for the parents of 58 THE GIFT OF HEALING. the boy who is injured when gunning, for they should not permit their child to take a creature's life for sport, and it would be easy to interest them in hunting with a camera, and they would have something to show for it. A boy could give quite an evening's entertainment lecturing upon progres- sion, the habits, homes or nests with pictures of each. We sometimes see pictures in daily papers of col- lections of stuffed birds, and the picture of the boy or men who shot these beautiful creatures stating that "He is a lover of birds." He is a lover of mummies, not birds. How far has civilized man progressed when men and women call it "sport" to go out and kill and maim defenceless and harmless dumb creatures? Spiritism teaches us that every time a needless cruelty is perpetrated it stunts the soul and retards progression. To know the different forms of life is to know God in the many ways that he manifests his work. The Message. What has spiritualism done for the author? This : She was inspired to write the little book "How to Make Use of the Power Within for Health and Prosperity," and was told by the spirits to publish it, as it would be well received, and it was very graciously received, as many letters of appreciation for the work were received, thanking her for the good it was doing. The spirits foretold a dangerous illness. She was in good health, but every time she closed her eyes 59 THE GIFT OF HEALING. she saw herself ill and in a limp condition; then she received a written message "automatically" say- ing that she would be very ill but would get well, and would have better health than she ever had, and the last warning came in a dream. She was in a white boat with one sail on front, a square sail (this is called the death boat) ; there was an awful storm raging and the small boat tossed so she thought it must capsize, but at last she caught a rope that steadied the boat, and it sailed so swiftly for shore that she felt that she would be dashed to pieces when the boat struck the land ; but when the boat reached the shore it turned gently on its side and the writer stepped out. This dream interpreted meant that death would be near, but that she would speedily recover, after the danger was past. A few days later she was taken suddenly and violently ill. A physician said there was an internal growth and when she was stronger she must submit to a surgical operation. This she refused to do. That night she turned out the light at her usual bed time about ten o'clock, and was in great pain. She closed her eyes and thought it would be awful to endure that pain always ; she had been ill then two weeks; in an instant, although she was alone, some one touched her arm, and she heard a click and a little whirr and a woman's voice spoke from the head of the bed, saying "Your Spiritual Instruc- tor is here sitting at your elbow; listen to what he has to say." She did not open her eyes, and a deep bass voice spoke, saying "We are told to tell you that we have taken charge of your case; you are 60 THE GIFT OF HEALING. not to have an operation. You are to get well ; you will be better in a week; Ave have lots of work yet for you to do; you are not to try to do anything, just get well; we will provide for you wholly." The voice died away into silence and she was so happy because she felt that she was not alone, then she grew much worse and sinking spells came on, one after another, until she felt that endurance had reached a limit and she could not retain her senses much longer. The pain became more intense and the awful weakness and trembling after each sink- ing spell and she was alone, just her little dog and her invisible friends, and she thought she would never be able to do the work they had just told her she must do, not on this side. Then the growth which her physician told her she had broke itself. This is what was causing all the weakness and sinking. No one can ever realize the agony she was in. She had grown a very large cyst tumor and was not conscious of it until it had grown so large that it had displaced all the internal organs. But the spirits who had taken charge of her case must have performed the operation for her, for she has lived to do their work, and she feels that their work is this book, and any work that may come after it. This is her message to the world from the spirit world. She came back from the border of the grave, feeling that she had entered a new life, for she knew that from that time she was never alone, the spirit band was ever near to guide and assist her, and she has proof that the spirit life is the real life since then. 61 THE GIFT OF HEALING. She closed her eyes and asked would she live to do her work, and she saw Death at the foot of her bed. He passed slowly by in his winding sheet and his face and head wound with white, excepting black holes for eyes. He turned his head and looked at her lying there, and he raised his skeleton arm and waved good-bye. This meant that he had passed close to her but would not stop this time. Had he intended to take her he would have ex- tended his arms. False Prophets. Let us get together and say ''For God and humanitarian principles" (not for God and religion) beware of the religion that says "all will be of our denomination in this country," for any religion that holds out that hope is seeking power and authority. By standing by the religion that prays that all will be for God regardless of denomination, we will obey His will. Christ came to revise the law of destruction and to do away with false prophets and to promote the brotherhood of man. ) Not long ago a clergyman made a plea for more money for missionary work among those who know nothing of Christ, and he deeply deplored the fact that another religion was making rapid strides in missionary work among the heathen. Instead of telling them that the light of Christ was reaching the heathen and rejoicing over the fact, God should be first, not earthly power. \ Missionaries all over the world deserve great credit for their self-sacrificing work, regardless of 62 THE GIFT OF HEALING. denomination. Many have lost their lives, have been killed by cannibals or they were destroyed in revolts among- nations or they succumbed to tropi- cal fevers. We who are living in comfortable loca- tions do not realize what these missionaries suffer to spread the Gospel of Christ, and we should ap- preciate every one of them regardless of the religion they represent. An Angel Opposeth Balaam. Numbers, Chap. 23, 21. And Balaam rose up in the morning and saddled his ass and went with the princes of Moab. 22. And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the Lord stood in the way for an adversary against him. Now he was riding on his ass and his two servants were with him. 23. And the ass saw the angel of the Lord stand- ing in the way and his sword drawn in his hand, and the ass turned aside out of the way and went into the field, and Balaam smote the ass to turn her into the way. 24. But the angel of the Lord stood in a path of the vineyards, a wall being on this side and a wall on that side. 25. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord she thrust herself unto the wall and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall, and he smote her again. 26. And the angel of the Lord went and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn either to the right nor the left hand. 27. And when the ass saw the angel of the Lord 63 THE GIFT OF HEALING. she fell down under Balaam. And Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with a staff. 28. And the Lord opened the mouth of the ass and she said unto Balaam, "What have I done unto thee that thou hast smitten me these three times?" 29. And Balaam said unto the ass "Because thou hast mocked me. I would there were a sword in mine hand, for now I would kill thee." 30. And the ass said unto Balaam, "Am I not thine ass, upon which thou hast ridden ever since I was thine unto this day? Was I ever wont to do so unto thee?" And he said "Nay." 31. Then the Lord opened the eyes of Balaam and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the way with his sword drawn in his hand and he bowed down his head and fell flat on his face. 32. And the angel of the Lord said unto him, "Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass three times? Beheld I went out to withstand thee be- cause thy way is perverse before me." 33. "And the ass saw me three times and turned from me; unless she had turned from me surely now also I had slain thee and saved her alive." 34. And Balaam said unto the angel of the Lord, "I have sinned, for I knew not that thou stoodest in the way against me. Now therefore if it displease thee I will get me back again." Here we have materialization and psychic vision for both man and beast ; the Lord opened Balaam's eyes just as he does the eyes of the mediums of this century. It is also a well known fact that animals have clairvoyant vision. 64 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Raphael Sent to Aid Tobias. Apocrypha, Chap. 6, i. Then the young man said to the angel, "Brother Azanas, to what use is the heart and the liver, and the gall of the fish?" 7. And he said unto him, touching the heart and the liver, "If a devil or an evil spirit trouble any, we must make a smoke thereof before the man or woman, and the party shall be no more vexed. 8. ''As for the gall, it is good to anoint a man that hath whiteness of the eyes, and he shall be healed." Chapter 11, 7. Then said Raphael, I know, Tobias, that thy Father will open his eyes. 8. Therefore anoint thou his eyes with the gall of the fish and being pricked therewith, he shall rub, and the whiteness shall fall away, and he shall see thee. This chapter proves that the Bible does not claim that all diseases were cured by prayer or faith, but that remedies were used. Chap. 12, 7. It is good to keep the secrets of a king but it is honorable to reveal the works of God. 8. It is better to give Alms than to lay up gold. 15. I am Raphael, one of the seven holy angels, which present the prayers of the saint, and which go in and out before the Glory of the Holy One. 18. For not of any favor of mine, but by the will of our God I came ; wherefore praise Him forever. 19. All these days I did appear unto you; but I did neither eat nor drink, but ye see a vision. 20. Now therefore give God thanks ; for I go to Him that sent me, but write all things in a book. 63 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 21. And when they arose they saw him no more. 22. Then they confessed the great and wonder- ful works of God and how the angel of the Lord had appeared unto them. This is materialization, just as we have it today, only this cannot be proven to all, as the ungodly drive the spirits away, as they do not believe, by the command of Christ, "Cast not pearls before swine." The angel Raphael told Tobias to cure his father Tobit of blindness by shew. How beautiful the story of the seven angels, who present our prayers and requests to the "Most High." This proves to us that we are in close touch with our spirit home. Why should we not be? When we are spirit now, sent here to pro- gress, and the fact that they are ever ready to take these messages, shows how close they are to us at all times. Very often the author closes her eyes at night and is thinking and hoping that certain things will come about, when suddenly she is shown how this will progress. It is given to her in pictures like the moving pictures. For instance she was thinking whether she would bring out this book right away. She was not asking the spirits, although her eyes were closed, when suddenly she saw a spirit clothed in white with a halo around the head and a lighted candle, and the arm extended as far as it could reach. This meant let your light shine, of course. As this book is inspired by spirit, it is the spirit light that will shine; the candle and light were white like an electric light. THE GIFT OF HEALING. Another time I was lying down and thinking of something - that annoyed me very much. My eyes were closed when I saw a sheet of water, and an air ship hovering over it, and the airship dove into the water and disappeared. This meant that the an- noyance would be wiped out, and it was. It ceased to trouble me. This proves that our guardian angels enter our thoughts and try to assist us and make the way clear, and they are trying to reach you who are troubled, but you dwell on your troubles and affairs of life so much that it makes it difficult for them to reach you. Sometimes they reach people in dreams, as they can control their thoughts then. If you will try to give five minutes' thought to this subject at night before going to sleep you may get results. Pray and then ask, you may get it ; that is, you hear it, yet it is not spoken so anyone else can hear it, for the answer comes into your mind. Sometimes I am looking for something I can not find, and as I have other work to do I cannot take the time to look for it, and I ask the spirits to tell me where it is, I must have it. I go back to my work and suddenly after a few moments it comes into my mind to go and lift up some papers or a box and I find it there. I never fail to find it after asking. Just as Raphael said to Tobias, write these things in a book; so I am told by the spirits that I must give out the message that is given to me ; they are using me to reach those who would welcome this beautiful truth, if they only knew how to find it. 67 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Visions. Those who have Psychic visions, know that the old Masters painted thier angels with wings, be- cause they had psychic visions, and angels were pic- tured with wings. Whenever the Author is shown an angel or cupid in a psychic vision, they are always shown with wings. Sometime ago I was shown in a vision that a per- son would go out of this world and I will tell you of this vision just as I saw it. A burst of light came and I was looking down into a room, a person was lying on the bed and there were large easy chairs near, when a flash of light, white like electric light came and an angel in white with her robe twisted around her feet, and large white wings, flew down to the bed, and when she went up she held the per- son in her arms, and their head against her cheek, and then the vision was gone. And I thought that if their going out was as beau- tiful as that, we should never feel badly when they go. Just think how beautiful that was and how little we have to fear, when one of Gods emissaries, comes for our loved ones in this beautiful way and folds their pure white wings about them ; is it any wonder that a psychic sees the world and its sor- rows in a different light from the rest of the world? You who see in visions must try to understand what is given you. Ask a question and try to in- terpret what is given; now if you ask about a per- son who is trying to do you some injury, they will 68 THE GIFT OF HEALING. show you this person with horns, as evil is repre- sented by horns ; also if there is treachery toward you. there will be a black cat and the person who is. treacherous will be shown looking very cross at you ; do not think you are seeing the devil when you see the person with horns, but notice whose face it is. One time I asked if a certain Governor would be elected again, and I saw a platform and empty seats, and in the back of the hall with his back toward me was a red headed boy, I said, "that isn't any answer at all," then the light was thrown on that red head until it looked like fire ; then it dawn- ed on me that the spirits were very up-to-date and were using the slang phrase, "red headed," meaning angry. The next day was election day and the candidate I favored lost and I was not pleased. When they show me a baby it signifies new life. I asked, if I was to go to the next world was that the new life ? Then they showed me a globe slowly revolving which I interpreted as meaning that I would have a new life on this globe. The Author is not a religious fanatic. She is broad and liberal and accepts the Gospel in the light that Christ gave it, that all may be among the high- est in time to come, if they have the will to do so. A person may have done every wrong and yet be- come a saint; Christ said to the Apostles, when they asked who then shall be saved? "All things are possible to God." Spiritualism means life. Real and joyous life, because it can never end. If brought up in this be- 69 THE GIFT OF HEALING. lief, we must escape much of the sorrow of life, ow- ing to our loved ones leaving for the eternal home, where Jesus went to prepare the mansions for those he loved, and died for. He died in bringing the truth of eternal life to us, for his message to this world was one of love, and duty to all our fellow creatures, and to be just to all. So we could pre- pare to continue our life's work after we leave the body and avoid remaining close to this earth while learning how to live there. There are many spiritual societies under different names all over the world and their numbers are in- creasing all the time. It is the members of these societies with their high standard of Justice and deep regard for humane kindness that will bring about the progression of the world. When we have progressed men will not be in politics for the money there is in it or for the honor of it, but there will be " Leaders of Men" full of brotherly love and hu- mane kindness, whose earnest desire will be to help their fellowmen in every way possible. The next generation, only a quarter of a century from the present time, can accomplish much in this direction, if the people of today will bring up their children in the right way and with the thought be- fore them that they are here to be of some use in the world and not for their own selfish pleasure. Make them feel the importance of their duty in this life ; if they have money do not permit them always to spend it for their own pleasure, tell them of aged people who drop down on the streets, from slow starvation, and ask them to save something toward 70 THE GIFT OF HEALING. helping these poor people, also little children who do not have milk. Can you imagine what the mother heart must feel when her child is hungry for milk, and she must give it water. I have seen all this ; the helpless aged, and poor baby, and these were among those who would not appeal to charitable associations. They were poor and would starve before going to one of these places. I have helped them all I could but that was only temporary relief and I was pow- erless to do more for them. If there Avas a fund where people in this station of life could borrow and return it in small sums this would not be char- ity and they would accept it and in this way the fund committee could ascertain whether they were worthy, without humiliating them, and if they could not return the amount borrowed it would not matter. Another form of progression is to have some one appointed to protect the interest and rights of the immigrants coming to work here ; he is the one who builds our highways and bridges and canals and railroads. I have watched these poor fellows work- ing and doing their best and a boss standing by urg- ing them to work faster. This is extreme cruelty to man or beast. There is nothing that wears on the nerves so much as to be urged when you are doing the best you can. I am pointing out all these wrongs because I hope that many mothers will read this book and tell them to their children, for they will be the employers of the next generation. The mother who is bringing 71 THE GIFT OF HEALING. her little "brood" up to be helpful and kind to all of God's creatures, is doing much more toward pro- gression, than the woman who lectures in public, for the mother practices her belief in her home life and develops progression. 72 THE GIFT OF HEALING. SPIRITUALISM. 'The poets read the future and foretell what is coming long before and far better than either the experimenter or the patentee. Tennyson made ref- erence in 1842 when he wrote, "There rained a ghastly den of falling human bodies from Airy Navies." Already 300 aviators have fallen from the "Central Blue" in which hostile navies may yet grapple. ^ I have copied the remarks above from a news- paper. It is a well known-fact that "Tennyson" was a psychic. I have read of his personal investiga- tions along spiritual lines and how he received evi- dence of spirit manifestations. The Holy Ghost. II Peter, Chapter 1. For the prophecy came not in the olden time by the will of man but holy men of God spake, as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. Chapter 2, 1. But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teach- ers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies even denying the Lord that bought them. We are told in this chapter that we can not have the gift of prophecy because we wish it, for it is gained usually, by the faith of a person, and their willingness and patience for every ill put upon 73 THE GIFT OF HEALING. them ; their enduring fortitude is observed by the powers above and rewarded by the " Great Light" suddenly being given them ; and then they do not regret that they suffered so much, for their happi- ness in knowing that they have been chosen to ex- press the divine truth. Here, is the greatest happi- ness that can be bestowed on any mortal. The Acts, Chapter 8-14. Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard Samaria had re- ceived the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John. 15. Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost. 16. For as yet he was fallen upon none of them, only they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus. 17. Then laid they their hands on them and they received the Holy Ghost. 18. And when Simon saw that through the lay- ing on of the Apostles' hands the Holy Ghost was given he offered them money. 19. Saying give me also power that on whom- soever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. But Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. Some religions today are accepting money for teaching faith healing. This gift can only be received by faith and prayer, 1/ you may learn the manner of using it, but you can 74 THE GIFT OF HEALING. not acquire the gift of healing which is the Holy- Ghost, from any one who accepts pay for it. St. Matthew, Chapter 16, 16. And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the son of the living God. 17. And Jesus answered and said unto him, blessed art thou Simon Barjona, for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. 18. And I say unto thee, that thou art Peter and upon this rock Twill build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 19. And I will give unto you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. Priests and clergymen claim to have the power that was vested in St. Peter, but it is only those who have received the "Holy Ghost" and the power of interpretation and divination who have the power to bind or loose as they are advised by the heavenly host in a psychic vision, as to what is right to give or withhold. All ordained ministers have not received the Holy Ghost and can not understand fully the meaning of the great light that is given to psychics ; they as- sume that they are vested with this power, because they have chosen religion as a profession, but this is not true, they are only imitations of those who have received the Holy Ghost and are pretending that they can bind anything in heaven. St. Mark, Chapter 4, 28. Verily I say unto you, 75 THE GIFT OF HEALING. all sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men and blasphemies wherewith soever they blaspheme. 29. But he that shall blaspheme the "Holy Ghost" hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Chapter 13, 10. And the Gospel must first be published among all Nations. 11. But when they shall lead you and deliver you up, take no thought before hand what ye shall speak, neither do ye premeditate, but whatsoever shall be given you in that hour, that speak ye ; for it is not ye that speak, but the "Holy Ghost." We have proof enough here that psychic power is the "Holy Ghost," the Comforter, that Christ said would come after Him. Spiritualists would be the largest denomination in the world if their followers had not in their ignorance refused to include Christ in their belief. They abhorred religion because the seers and prophets of old were so persecuted, but the spiritualist of today understands that Christ gave up his life to prove the gift of prophecy and the truth that our maker is the Living God. The Acts, Chapter 7, 48. Howbeit the most High dwelleth not in temples made with hands, as saith the prophet. 49. Heaven is my throne and the earth is my footstool. What house will ye build Me, saith the Lord or what is the place of My rest? 50. Hath not My hands made all these things? 51. Ye stiflnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do alwa}^s resist the "Holy Ghost" ; as your fathers did, so did ye. 76 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 52. Which of the prophets have not your fathers persecuted? And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One of whom ye have been now the betrayers and murder- ers. 53. Who have received the law by the disposi- tion of angels and have not kept it. This chapter explains fully the fact that the "Holy Ghost" and gift of psychic power and of prophecy, are one. Mediums and seers are receiving the "law" today as it says in verse fifty-three, "by the disposition of angels." "The Most High dwelleth not in Temples made by hands." As the body is the Temple of the Soul, the "Most High" dwelleth in us, and we can prove that He dwells in us by making it manifest in our kindness and care of every living thing that we come in con- tact with. And the "Most High" dwells in those who receive the "Holy Ghost." Let the God light within you shine upon all and you will be happy in making others happy. The Acts, Chapter 10. 9. On the morrow as they went on their journey and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour. 10. And he became very hungry and would have eaten but while they made ready, he fell into a trance. 11. And saw heaven opened and a certain ves- sel descending unto Him as it had been a great THE GIFT OF HEALING. sheet knit at the four corners and let down to the earth. You will note by this chapter that St. Peter was a trance medium inspired by the "Holy Ghost" and you will note also that all through the testament that Jesus and all his followers, had to defend their lives and themselves against persecution, because they were prophets and seers, and that those who were ruling then were performing bluff miracles, and they knew that if they permitted the real prophets to heal and cure, that they themselves would lose power, and as they cared more for power and gain than they did for God, they persist- ed in trying to destroy all those who professed to believe in the teachings of Christ and the gift of prophecy from the "Holy Ghost." And the same persecution is being attempted to- day by religious denominations, but in spite of their aggressive efforts the time for ignorance has gone by and the truth will prevail, and the Gospel of free communication with spirits will take its proper place in the world and nothing will be able to undermine it. I am told to make this very plain to you, for it is a fact. The Acts, Chapter 3, 1. Now Peter and John went up together into the Temple at the hour of prayer, being the ninth hour. 2. And a certain man lame from birth was car- ried, whom they laid daily at the gate of the temple which is called beautiful to ask alms of them that entered into the temple. 3. Who seeing Peter and John about to go into the temple asked alms. 78 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 5. And he gave heed unto them, expecting to receive something of them. 6. Then Peter said, Silver and gold have I none., but such as I have I give thee, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth rise up and walk. 7. And he took him by the right hand and lifted him up, and immediately his feet and ankle bones received strength. 8. And he leaping up stood and walked and entered with them into the temple, walking and leaping and praising God. 9. And all the people saw him walking and praising God. 10. And they knew that it was he which sat for alms at the Beautiful gate of the temple, and they were filled with wonder and amazement at that which had happened unto him. 11. And as the lame man which was healed held Peter and John, all the people ran together unto them in the porch that is called Solomon's, greatly wondering. 12. And when Peter saw it, he answered unto the people, Ye men of Israel, why marvel ye at this or why look ye so earnestly on us, as though by our power or holiness we had made this man walk ? St. Peter tells us that we must not think we have the power to work these miracles, we are used as mediums by Christ to do His work. The Acts, Chapter 4, 7. And when they had set them in the midst they asked, by what power or by what name have ye done this? 79 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 8. Then Peter, rilled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of the people and elders of Israel. 9. If we this day examined of the good deed done to the impotent man, by what means he was made whole. 10. Be it known unto you all, and to all the peo- ple of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11. This is the stone which was set at naught of you builders which is become the head of the corner. 12. Neither is there salvation in any other for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved. 13. Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John and perceived that they were unlearned and ignorant men, they marvelled and they took kowledge of them, that they had been with Jesus. 14. And beholding the man which was healed standing with them, they could say nothing against it. 29. And now. Lord, behold their threatenings, and grant unto thy servants, that with all boldness they may speak thy word. 30. By stretching forth thine hand to heal, and that signs and wonders may be done by the name of thy holy child Jesus. 31. And when they prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together : and they were 80 THE GIFT OF HEALING. all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness. 32. And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul, neither said any of them that aught of the things which he possessed was his own ; but they had all things common. 33. And with great power gave the apostles wit- ness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus and great grace was upon them all. We often read in the newspapers that some working man has suddenly received the power of healing and there are many who ridicule the fact; they do not know that this gift can come to rich or poor, if we seek it, but not all who profess to be healers are healers, for many pay money to learn faith healing and charge money for healing; these turn to healing as a science and a means of making money and the Lord Jesus cannot be made a party to a money-making scheme. The gift of the Holy Ghost cannot be bought or sold. The way to acquire it is first to be sincere and ask to have this gift given you to have the power through Jesus to do good, then heal, without a money thought or price, and those who are grate- ful will recompense you, as they know you must live. Christ has said, "Freely ye have received, freely give." Those who pay money to learn faith-healing and charge for healing may get patients who believe in the cure, but they cannot cure, as they have not re- ceived the power. 81 THE GIFT OF HEALING. The Acts, Chapter 5, 4. And when they had call- ed the apostles and beaten them, they commanded that they should not speak in the presence of Jesus and let them go. 41. And they departed from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer shame for His name. 42. And daily in the temple, and in every house, they ceased not to teach and preach Jesus Christ. The way to get the gift of healing and to receive psychic power is to read books and papers on these gifts and spiritualism generally. The Banner of Light, a paper on spiritualism published at 28 School Street, Boston, Mass., is a great source of education for those wishing to develop their heal- ing or psychic power. The price is one dollar per year. Their writers are international and some of them are of the most scientific men and women. The Conversion of Paul. The Acts, Chapter 22, 6. And it came to pass that as I made my journey and was come nigh unto Damascus about noon, suddenly there shone from heaven a great light round about me. 7. And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying unto me, "Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me?" 8. And I answered, "who art thou Lord?" and he said unto me, "I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom thou persecutest." 9. And they that were with me saw indeed the 82 THE GIFT OF HEALING. light, and were afraid ; but they heard not the voice of Him that spoke unto me. io. And I said, What shall I do Lord?" And the Lord said, Arise and go into Damascus and there it shall be told thee of all things which are appointed for thee to do. ii. And when I could not see for the glory of that light being led by the hand of them that were with me, I came into Damascus. 12. And one Ananias a devout man, according to the law, having a good report of all the Jews which dwell there, 13. Came unto me, and stood, and said unto me, Brother Saul, receive thy sight and the same hour I looked upon him. 14. And he said, The God of our Fathers hath chosen thee, that thou shouldst know His will, and see that Just One shouldst hear the voice of His mouth. 15. For thou shalt be his witness unto all men, of what thou hast seen and heard. 17. And it came to pass that, when I was come again to Jerusalem, even while I prayed in the Temple, I was in a trance. 18. And I saw Him saying unto me, make haste, and get thee quickly out of Jerusalem ; for they will not receive thy testimony concerning Me. You will see by this verse that Paul was in a trance condition, and received his message from above in the same manner as the mediums of today. The Acts, Chapter 7, 16. And it came to pass as we went to prayer, a certain damsel of divination, 83 THE GIFT OF HEALING. met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying. 17. The same followed Paul and us and cried saying, these men are the servants of the most high God. 18. And this she did many days, but Paul said to the spirit, I command you to come out of her. And he came out the same hour. This chapter proves the trance condition the spirit power had taken possession of her and it also proves fortune telling for money, and that nothing else is meant than fortune telling. The Acts, Chapter 18, 9. Then spake the Lord to Paul in a vision, be not afraid but speak and hold not thy peace. 10. For I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to hurt thee for I have much people in this city. Chapter 21, 9. And the same man (Philip the Evangelist) had four daughters, Virgins, which did prophesy. 10. There came from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. 11. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, so shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. And Paul was delivered just as Agabus prophe- sied. "Paul" had been a vicious man previous to his message from above, as he ordered the execution of 84 THE GIFT OF HEALING. St. Stephen, and persecuted those who were not of his faith and were believers in Christ. The Lord knew that a man who was so sincere as to destroy all who did not believe in his religion, would be just as faithful to the truth, if he received it from the spirit side of life. This was the only way that a determined man could learn the truth, not from others, but direct from heaven. There are many "Pauls" on the earth today and many of them are convinced after a time in the same manner that Paul was, by the spirit from the "Holy Ghost." The Epistles of Paul. I hope that everyone who reads this book, will read the "epistles of Paul" in full. Every line teems with brotherly love and sincere regard for their physical welfare and that is what Christ came to teach, and is still teaching, by his chosen ones, and he seeks these out in every walk of life, and urges them to go and give out the truth as it has been given to them. Every step along humane lines, is a step nearer to God. The mind is the citadel of the physical body and the spirit in turn dominates that. We should cloth the body the very best we can out of respect for the eternal spark it envelopes. We must not go beyond our means to do this, however, as we can be thoroughly clean, both in body and raiment, and look beautiful, for what is more beautiful than a thoroughly clean person. God intended everything to be beautiful, you will 85 THE GIFT OF HEALING. notice the beautiful colors of the birds and flowers. A little bird takes a bath every day and takes pride in his fine plumage, thus paying- homage to the God who gave it. It seems as though the lower animals were more grateful for the good gifts the Creator has given to them. The human is inclined to self- ishly take everything as a matter of course. There is a pretty legend of the birds when they drink they raise their heads toward heaven in grate- ful thanks for the gift of water. Let us also be grateful for water and bathe often, and acknowl- edge His gift when we drink it, for He has placed everything here for the good of the body as well as for our spiritual welfare. The Epistle of Paul to the Romans. Chapter 12. Verse 4. For as we have many members in one body, and all members have not the same office : 5. So we being many, are one body in Christ, and everyone, members one of another. 6. Having their gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, whether prophecy, let us prophesy according to the proportion of faith. Chapter 14. Verse 23. And he that doubteth is damned if he eat, because he eateth without faith: for whatsoever is not of faith is sin. Here again we are told to prophesy, and we must endeavor to give only that which is given to us by the spirits, otherwise we will become only an injury to all mediums and psychics, as prophets, 86 THE GIFT OF HEALING. and a hindrance to spiritualism. You owe this duty to the gift that has been given to you. When an investigator goes to a medium for a sitting, and the medium cannot get anything for that person, they should be honorable and tell them so and ask them to try some other time, as we know that we cannot use our psychic power at will, as there are times when we cannot get a message for several weeks or days. But some mediums are so grasping to get the money, that they are arrested for fraud, for they deserve it. Paul to the Corinthians. Chapter 2. Verse 12. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are given freely to us of God. 13. Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth : comparing spiritual things with spiritual. 14. But the natural man receiveth not the things of the spirit of God : for they are foolishness unto Him : neither can he know them, for they are spirit- ually discerned. Paul expresses it just as the author or any psy- chic sees it. We know and commune with spirits and see them, and are advised by them, but the natural man, the man or woman who has not been given the second sight, thinks that one who says he hears voices, or sees visions which are given him, must be insane or unreliable. 87 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Paul to Timothy. Epistle of Paul. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Jesus Christ. Spiritualism of John. i John. Chapter 4, 1. Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try thou the spirits whether they are of God ; because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2. Hereby know ye the Spirit of God. Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God. Here we have a good test of those who have the spirit power, many who profess to be mediums and psychics, do not recognize Christ. It would be well to avoid them, for if they are ungodly they cannot be helpful to you. If the message comes true it is of God. 3. And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, is not of God. And this is that spirit of Antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come ; and even now already is it in the world. 6. We are of God; he that knoweth God, hear- eth us ; he that is not of God heareth not us. Here- by know we the spirit of truth and the spirit of error. 7. Beloved, let us love one another ; for love is of God, and everyone that loveth is born of God and knoweth God. 88 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 8. He that loveth not, knoweth not God for God is love. 10. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the pro- pitiation for our sins. ii. Beloved if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another. 12. No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another God dwelleth in us and His love is perfected in us. 13. Hereby know we that we dwell in Him, and He in us, because He hath given us of His spirit. 18. There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear; because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love. 20. If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar; for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21. And this commandment have we from Him, that he who loveth God love his brother also. This commandment teaches us that we cannot hate anyone and love God, for God is love and we must be all love or all hate, if you can not like a person put them out of your mind, think they do not exist and to you they do not Jesus Tells the Past. St. John, Chapter 4, 16. Jesus saith unto her, Go, call thy husband and come hither. 17. The woman answered and said, I have no 89 THE GIFT OF HEALING. husband; Jesus said unto her, thou hast well said, I have no husband. 18. For thou hast five husbands; and he whom thou now hast is not thy husband, in that saidst thou truly. 19. The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet. 28. The woman left her water pot, and went her way unto the city and saith to the men. 29. Come, see a man which told me all things that ever I did; is not this the Christ? 44. For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet hath no honor in His own country. These chapters prove that Christ meant prophecy when He said go and prophesy, and His talk to the woman is what we term fortune telling today. St. John, Chapter 6, 35. And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life, he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst. The Jews were surprised because Christ could preach, and said "How knoweth this man letters, having never learned?" 7-16. Jesus said, "My doctrine is not mine but His that sent me." Mediums and psychics are gi^en the gift of ex- pressing that which they have never learned. 12. Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying "I am the light of the world ; he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness but shall have the light of life." 24. I say therefore unto you, that ye shall die in 90 THE GIFT OF HEALING. your sins; for if ye believe not that I am He, ye shall die in your sins. St. John, Chapter 10, n. I am the good shep- herd ; the good shepherd giveth His life for His sheep. 16. And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold ; them also I must bring and they shall hear My voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd. 31. Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him. To you who read these verses, it seems awful that they should stone Jesus for doing good, and claim- ing to do that good through the power given by God, but people today are persecuting others for do- ing good, and in this way throwing stones at them. Affliction is not Sin. St. John, Chapter 9, 1. And as Jesus passed by, He saw a man which was blind from His birth. 2. And His disciples asked Him, saying Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents that he was born blind? 3. Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned nor his parents ; but that the works of God should be made manifest in him. 5. As long as I am in the world I am the light of the world. The works of God are made manifest, by afflic- tion of various kinds, to show us that He is God. If it were not for sickness and trouble, we would not care to learn about God, we would think that we were as great as He, but when we are weak, we 91 THE GIFT OF HEALING. realize that He is the supreme power that controls all creation, and we must turn to Him for strength and light. Jesus said, As long as I am in the world, I am the Light of the World. We also are the light of the world and we must do all in our power to help others to see the truth and progress and con- tinue His work. He left the message with the dis- ciples who would come after Him, for all time to come, they must reflect His light. St. John, Chapter 10, n. I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd giveth his life for his sheep. 12. But he that is an hireling and not the shep- herd who owns the sheep, seeth the wolf coming and leaveth the sheep and fleeth; and the wolf catcheth them and scattereth the sheep. 13. The hireling fleeth because he is an hireling and careth not for the sheep. 14. I am the good shepherd and know my sheep and am known of mine. 15. As the Father knoweth Me, even so I know the Father; and I lay down my life for My sheep. St. John, Chapter 10, 12. He that believeth on Me the works that I do shall he do also, and greater works than these shall he do, beacuse I go unto My Father. Jesus realized, that in time to come the progres- sion of the world would require greater works than he was doing at that time. If we have faith and believe in His promise and believe in the power we have gained by faith, we will convince others and when they have faith they also will be healed, and heal others, for He tells us that we can do so by believing. 92 THE GIFT OF HEALING. St. John, 5, 2. Now there is at Jerusalem by the sheep market a pool which is called in the Hebrew tongue, Bethesda, having five porches. 3. In these lay a great multitude of impotent folk of blind, halt, withered, waiting for the mov- ing of the water. 4. For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool and troubled the water; whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in, was made whole of whatever disease he had. 5. And a certain man was there which had an in- firmity thirty-eight years. 6. When Jesus saw him, He knew that he had been a long time in that case. He saith unto him, wilt thou be whole? 7. The impotent man answered him, Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me. 8. Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed and walk. 9. And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed and walked ; and on the same day was the Sabbath. Jesus in saying Destroy this Temple and in three days I will raise it up, meant His own body which was raised from the dead in three days. St. John, Chapter 6, 63. It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing; the words I speak unto you, they are spirit and they are life. St. John, 8. Some said He is a good man, others said nay, but He deceiveth the people. St. John 8. Then spake Jesus again unto them 93 THE GIFT OF HEALING. saying I am the light of the world; he that follow- eth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life. St. John, 9, 2. We find that disease or affliction is not sin or error nor yet in the mind or wrong thinking, as some would have us believe, "but that the works of God should be made manifest in him." If we were in perfect health at all times we would think we were as great as God, but when we are ill we realize how weak we are and are inclined to turn to the Power which sent us here for more strength. In this way we understand His works. 4. I must work the works of Him that sent me, while yet it is day ; the night cometh, when no man can work. 5. As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world. 6. When He had thus spoken He spat on the ground and made clay of the spittle, and He an- ointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay. 7. And said, Go wash in the pool of Siloam (which is by interpretation, sent). He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing. Jesus is in the world today and is still the light of the world, and we can be healed by faith today and can be made to see by His light. The clay that Christ used to anoint the blind man's eyes had healing properties ; this was of assistance in con- nection with the man's faith. St. John, 10, 10. The words that I spake unto you I spake not of myself, but the Father that dwelleth in Me; He doeth the works. 94 THE GIFT OF HEALING. ii. Believe Me that I am in the Father and the Father in Me, or else believe Me for the very work's sake. 12. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that N be- lieveth in Me, the works that I do shall he do also ; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto My Father. 14. If )^e shall ask anything in My name I will do it. That the Father may be glorified. St. John, 15, 5. I am the vine ye are the branches ; he that abideth in Me and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit; for without Me ye can do nothing. 7. If ye abide in me, and My words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you. 18. If the world hates you, ye know that it hated Me before it hated you. 20. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you. St. John, Chap. 17, 27. For the Father Himself loveth you; because ye have loved Me and have believed that I came out from God. 28. I came forth from the Father and am come into the world : again I leave the world, and go to the Father. 30. By this we believe that Thou earnest forth from God. We also came forth from God and we will go back to the world whence we came. St. John, Chap. 12. Beloved, believe not all the spirits, but try them to see if of God. 95 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Sometimes an unprogressive spirit manages to reach some medium, and as he has remained in the same condition in which he left the earth plane, he cannot give out the truth, as he does not know. It sometimes happens that a highly cultivated person gives a message through a person who is very illiterate, because he cannot find any other means of communication. As he must use the physical force of the medium his message is given in an illiterate manner. 9(5 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Invocation. May the God of light shine upon your pathway and illumine your spiritual eyes. 97 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Obsession. You will notice that when Christ treated the in- sane He never said "Pray that ye may be well," nor "You are a child of God and cannot be insane, for you are spirit." But He said "Come out of him, evil one." He recognized the evil, and banished it, just as today we must first learn what is causing an illness or disease and remove the cause and also get the mind right with mental science, so that the patient will not worry and add to his discomfort. Distant Healing of Jesus. St. Luke, Chap. 7, 2. And a certain centurion's servant who was dear unto him was sick and ready to die. 3. And when he heard of Jesus he sent unto Him the elders of the Jews, beseeching Him that he would come and heal his servant. 4. And when they came to Jesus they besought Him instantly, saying that he was worthy for whom He should do this. 5. For he loveth our nation, and he hath built us a synagogue. 6. Then Jesus went with them, and when He was now not far from the house, the Centurion sent friends to Him, saying unto Him, Lord, trouble not thyself, for I am not worthy that Thou shouldest enter under my roof: 7. Wherefore neither thought I myself worthy to come unto Thee : but say in a word and my servant shall be healed. 8. For I also am a man set under authority, THE GIFT OF HEALING. having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth ; and to another, Come, and he cometh. And to my servant do this and he doeth it. 9. When Jesus heard these things, He marvelled at him, and turned him about and said unto the people that followed him, I say unto you, I have not found so great a faith, no, not in Israel. 10. And they that were sent, returning to the house, found the servant whole that had been sick. The Acts, Chap. 19, 6. And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. n. And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul. 12. So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons and the disease departed from them and the evil spirits went out of them. 13. Then certain of the vagabond Jews exorcists took upon them to call over them which had evil spirits the name of the Lord Jesus, saying, we ad- jure you by Jesus whom Paul preacheth. The Acts, Chap. 17, 23. For as I passed by and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this 'inscription, To The Unknown God, whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, Him declare I unto you. 24. God that made the world and all things therein, seeing that He is Lord of Heaven and Earth, dwelleth not in Temples made with hands. 25. Neither is worshipped with men's hands as though he needed anything, seeing He giveth to all life and breath and all things. 26. And hath made of one blood all nations of 100 THE GIFT OF HEALING. men for to dwell on all the face of the earth and hath determined the times before appointed and the bounds of their habitation. 28. For in Him we live and move and have our being as certain also of our poets have said, "For we are also His offspring." 14. And there were seven sons of one Sceva, a. Jew and chief of the priests which did so. 15. And the evil spirit answered, Jesus, I know y . and Paul, I know, but who are ye? 16. And the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, and overcame them and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. 17. And this was known to all the Jews and Greeks, also dwelling at Ephesus and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. 18. And many that believed came and confessed and shewed their deeds. 19. Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together and burned them be- fore all men; and they counted the price of them and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver. 20. So mightily grew the word of God and pre- vailed. Christ says by their works, ye shall know them; and those in authority before making arrests, should ascertain whether they are real spiritual healers or not ; we learn here that Paul could send a piece of cloth that came in contact with his body to a person and he was healed. Paul could do this because he had the divine and psychic power, but today if any- 101 THE GIFT OF HEALING. one is caught sending a paper or cloth to another for healing purposes, they are arrested and the news- papers take up the matter and ridicule it instead of seeking out their patients to learn whether they per- formed any cures or not. And also they should learn from the Bible that cures were performed in this way by the saints who were given the power by God to heal by the spirit. This is the religion of the gospel and should not be interfered with by the law that admits and recognizes the gospel. People should read the Bible and then they will know better than to laugh at cures to distant per- sons, for what is the difference to reach them across a room or across greater space, for faith can go anywhere and if the Healer is real and true he can perform the cure by faith in the spirit. The Acts, Chapter 17, 12. So that from His body were brought unto the sick, handkerchiefs or aprons and the disease departed from them and the evil spirits went out of them. Here we have proof that St. Paul whose name is sacred to all religion, did distant healing and sent articles that were magnetized by coming in contact with His body to assist in placing the mind of His patient in the right concentration, to aid in the heal- ing. I have read remarks in the daily papers made by officials who had arrested mediums for doing just what Paul had done and they ridiculed the subject, evidently they had never read the Bible. 46. So Jesus came again into Cana of Galilee, where he made the water wine; and there was a 102 THE GIFT OF HEALING. certain nobleman whose son was sick at Caper- naum. 47. When he heard that Jesus was come out of Judea into Galilee, he went unto Him and besought that He would come down, and heal his son for he was at the point of death. 48. Then said Jesus unto him, except ye see signs and wonders ye will not believe. 49. The nobleman saith unto him, Sir, come down ere my child die. 50. Jesus saith unto him, go thy way, thy son liveth. And the man believed the word that Jesus had spoken unto him and he went away. 51. And as he was now going down his ser- vants met him, and told him saying, Thy son liveth. 52. Then he inquired the hour of them when he begin to amend, and they said unto him, yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him. 53. So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said unto him, thy son liveth, and himself believed and his whole house. St. Luke, Chapter 4, 14. And Jesus returned in the power of the spirit into Galilee and there went out a fame of Him through all the region round about. 15. And He taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16. And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up ; and as His custom was He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up for to read. 17. And there was delivered unto Him the book 103 THE GIFT OF HEALING. of the prophet Essias, and when he had opened the book He found the place where it was written. 18. The spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He hath anointed me to preach the Gospel to the poor; He hath sent me to heal the broken hearted, tc preach deliverance to the captives and recover- ing of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised. 19. To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20. And he closed the book and He gave it again to the minister and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him. 21. And he begun to say unto them, this day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears. 22. And all bare Him witness and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth; and they said, is not this Joseph's son? 23. And he said to them, Ye will surely say unto Me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself; whatso- ever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy own country. 24. And he said, verily I say unto you, no pro- phet is accepted in his own country. St. Mathew, Chapter 6, 28. And why take ye thought for raiment ; consider the lillies of the field, how they grow, they toil not neither do they spin. 29. And yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. 33. But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things shall be add- ed unto you. 104 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 34. Take therefore no thought for the morrow. We are told in the 6th chapter of St. Mathew that we are to expect prophecy if we seek the king- dom of God. It is our right and God can give us anything we ask for if we get in touch with Him, for then we would not ask, for anything we should not have; we would renounce that which was not right for us to have and accept the gifts that were for our good. St. Matthew, Chapter 6, 6. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret ; and thy Father which seest in secret shall reward thee openly. 7. But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions as the heathen do ; for they think they shall be heard for their much speaking. 8. Be not ye therefore like unto them, for your Father knowest what things ye have need of, be- fore ye ask Him. 9. After this manner therefore pray ye, Our father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. 10. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven. 11. Give us this day our daily bread. 12. And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. 13. And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil ; for thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. St. Matthew, Chapter 7, 6. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls be- fore swine, lest they trample them under their feet and turn again and rend you. 105 THE GIFT OF HEALING. The power of healing is holy and the God given gift of psychic vision is a priceless pearl, and if we offer it to those who do not understand, we are like- ly to be treated as if we were not to be taken seri- ously, but this must not prevent us from giving out the truth whenever it is given to us. Christ tells of the Gifts God has given Us. n. If ye then being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father in heaven give good things to them that ask Him. You all have the gift, it is for you to learn how to use it. Those who scoff at the laying on of hands in healing should read Chapter 8, St. Matthew. St. Matthew, Chapter 10, 19. But when they de- liver you up take no thought, how or what ye shall speak, for it shall be given to you in that hour. This can only be interpreted as meaning, that the spirits will give us the proper words to defend our belief and cause. All attempts to overthrow the teachings of Christ have failed; his religion, the Brotherhood of Man, is the best religion one can have. We must not narrow ourselves to our own immediate famil- ies, but we must consider all are our mothers and brothers and sisters. Do everything you can for some unfortunate aged woman just as if she was your mother, if you cannot afford to do anything for her materially, be kind to her. St. Matthew, Chapter 8, 28. There met Him two possessed with devils, coming out of the tombs, 106 THE GIFT OF HEALING. exceeding fierce, so that no man might pass by that way. 26. And, behold, they cried out, saying, what have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou son of God? Art thou come hither to torment us before the time. 30. And there was a good way off from them a herd of many swine feeding. 31. So the devils besought him saying, if thou cast us off permit us to go away into the herd of swine, and He said unto them, Go, and they went into the herd of swine; and behold the whole herd of swine ran violently down a steep place into the sea and perished in the waters. Now you can plainly understand that Jesus rec- ognized spirit return, as he distinctly says, "Come out of the tomb." Also there is no doubt that up to the present day some people are obsessed, espe- cially those who are insane, and become just the op- posite to what they were in their sane moments. There should be at the head of all insane retreats a man of God who understands psychology which is soulology, who would cast out these undesirable spirits who have taken possession of some kind soul. Matthew 9, 37. Verily I say unto you, this gen- eration shall not pass till all these things be ful- filled. St. Matthew, Chapter 27, 52. And the graves were opened and many bodies of the saints which slept arose. 53. And came out of the graves after His resur- rection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many. St. Matthew, Chapter 9, 28. And when He was 107 THE GIFT OF HEALING. come into the house, the blind men came to him and Jesus saith unto them, Believe ye that I am able to do this? They said unto Him, yea, Lord. 29. Then touched He their eyes, saying, accord- ing to your faith, be it unto you. 30. And their eyes were opened. St. Matthew, 10, 1. And when he had called unto Him His twelve disciples, He gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and disease. 8. Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out devils, freely ye have received, freely give. 7. And as ye go preach, saying, the Kingdom of heaven is at hand. 17. But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will scourge you in their synagogues. These verses apply to conditions of this century. Many there are who attempt to legislate so that the teachings of Christ may be prohibited, but this rul- ing will never be accomplished — Christ will prevail. St. Matthew, Chap. 12, 22. There was brought unto Him one possessed with a devil, blind and dumb : and He healed him, inasmuch that the blind and dumb both spake and saw. 28. But if I cast out devils by the Spirit of God, then the Kingdom of God is come unto you. 31. Wherefore I say unto you, all manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men ; but the blasphemy of the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men. St. Matthew, Chap. 12, 10. And behold, there 108 THE GIFT OF HEALING. was a man which had his hand withered, and they asked Him, saying, Is it lawful to heal on the Sab- bath Day, that they might accuse Him. ii. And He said unto them, What man shall be among you that shall have one sheep, and if it fall into a pit on the Sabbath day, will he not lay hold on it, and lift it out? 12. How much then is a man better than a sheep? Wherefore it is lawful to do well on the Sabbath day. 28. But if I cast out devils by the spirit of God then the Kingdom of God is come unto you. 43. When the unclean spirit is gone out of a man, he walketh through dry places, seeking rest and home. 44. Then saith he, I will return into my house from whence I came out, and when he is come, he findeth it empty, swept, and garnished. 45. Then goeth he, and taketh with himself seven other spirits more wicked than himself, and they enter in and dwell there; and the last state of that man is worse than the first. 50. For whosoever shall do the will of My Father which is in heaven the same is My brother, and sister and My mother. Matthew 13, 10. And the disciples came and said unto Him, wiry speakest Thou unto them in parables? 11. He answered because it is given unto you to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven but to them it is not given. 16. But blessed are your eyes for they see : and your ears for they hear. 109 THE GIFT OF HEALING. These disciples had the Psychic power, as many mediums and seers do today. It is a great gift but one that very few can understand unless they have developed the power within. 17. For verily I say unto you, that many pro- phets and righteous men have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them; and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them. Mediums today see and hear the things those men saw. Christ passed this gift down to all ages so His Father's work would be done for all the people who would come upon the earth. St. Matthew, Chap. 7, 4. Then answered Peter and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here; if Thous wilt let us make here three taber- nacles ; one for Thee and one for Moses and one for Elias. 5. While he yet spoke, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them ; and behold a voice out of the cloud which said, "This is My Beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased, hear ye Him." 6. And when the disciples heard it they fell on their face and were sore afraid. 7. And Jesus came and touched them and said, Arise, be not afraid. 8. And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no man save Jesus. 14. There came to Jesus a certain man kneeling down saying, 15. Lord, have mercy on my son; for he is sore vexed, for often times he falleth into the fire and oft into the water. 110 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 17. And Jesus rebuked the devil, and he de- parted out of him and the child was cured from that hour. St. Mark, Chap. 17. And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James and John, his brother, and bringeth them up into a high mountain. 2. And was transfigured before them, and His face did shine as the sun. 3. And behold Moses and Elias talked with Him. St. Matthew, Chap. 18, 19. Then came the disciples to Jesus apart and said, Why could not we cast him out? 20. And Jesus said unto them, because of your unbelief, if ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place ; and it shall remove ; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Now this does not mean that the mountain will move itself, but if you ask its removal, some one may come to think that it should be removed for commercial reasons or otherwise for improvement, and take upon themselves the task of removing it. Nevertheless your desire has been granted. The Second Coming of the Lord. Matthew Chap. 24, 5. For many shall come in My name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many. 6. And ye shall hear of wars and rumors of wars; for all these things must come to pass, but the end is not yet. 7. For nation shall rise against nation and king- 111 THE GIFT OF HEALING. dom against kingdom, and there shall be famine, and pestilences and earthquakes in divers places. 9. And then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you, and ye shall be hated of all nations, for My sake. n. And many false prophets shall rise and shall deceive many. 13. But he that shall endure unto the end the same shall be saved. 14. And this gospel of the kingdom must be preached in all the world, for a witness to all na- tions, aud then the end shall come. 15. When ye therefore shall see the abomination of desolation, spoken of by Daniel the prophet, stand in the holy place (whoso readeth let him understand). 26. Wherefore if they shall say unto you, Be- hold, He is in the desert; go not forth; behold He is in the secret chambers ; believe it not. 29. Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken. 30. And then shall appear the sign of the Son of Man in heaven ; and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of Man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. 31. And He shall send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet and they shall gather together His elect from the four winds from one end of heaven to the other. 112 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 32. Now learn a parable of the fig tree; when his branch is yet tender, and putteth forth leaves, ye know that summer is nigh. 33. So likewise ye, when ye shall see all these things, know that it is near, even at thy doors. 35. Heaven and earth shall pass away but My words shall never pass away. Thy Kingdom Come. When Christ healed the sick and commanded his disciples to heal and prophesy, saying, Matthew 10, As ye go, preach, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is at hand." If you are healed by faith through medium- ship of one of God's chosen ones, the kingdom of heaven has come unto you. This is the meaning of the words in the Lord's prayer, for if you pray for health or prosperity, and you receive it, the kingdom of God has come to you. Also if you have received the gift of seeing with spiritual eyes. Christ's Sermon — The Law. Matt. 40. And if any man will sue thee at the law, and take away thy coat, let him have thy cloak also. 41. And whosoever shall compel thee to go a mile, go with him twain. 46. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have you? Do not even the publicans do the same? 48. Be ye therefore perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven. 44. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, 113 THE GIFT OF HEALING. bless them that curse, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you. Father. St. Matt., Chap. 23, 9. And call no man Father, upon the earth, for one is your Father which is in heaven. How can any religion that accepts the teachings of the Bible go contrary to Christ's commands in this respect? In spite of this command, the leaders of many religions are called "Father." This proves that they do not accept all the teachings of Christ ; then how can we accept their teachings? St. Matt., Chap. 25, 34. Then shall the King say unto them on His right hand, come ye blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. 35. For I was an hungered and ye gave Me meat; I was thirsty and ye gave Me drink. I was a stranger and ye took Me in. 36. Naked, and ye clothed Me; I was sick and ye visited Me ; I was in prison and ye came unto Me. 37. Then shall the righteous answer Him, say- ing, Lord, when saw we Thee an hungered and fed Thee? or thirsty and gave Thee drink? 38. When saw we a Stranger and took Thee in? or naked and clothed Thee? 39. Or when saw we Thee sick or in prison and came unto Thee? 40. And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, in as much as ye have 114 THE GIFT OF HEALING. done it unto one of the least of My children, ye have done it unto Me. Christ teaches us that every kindness done to one of His brothers and our brothers is a kindness done unto God the Father, just as a father on earth would consider a kindness to his child as a favor done for him. We must remember to be kind and courteous to all who come our way even if we can- not assist them otherwise. God. We breathe and live through the Spirit God, the Creator of all life, animal or vegetable, and the same life courses through all His creation. Therefore all are of the same importance to Him, although some are of a higher state of progression. The author believes in a personal God and in the Divinity of Christ. All else on earth is God mani- festing Himself in different forms. St. Matt., 27. And whosoever will be chief among you let him be Your servant. 28. Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto but to minister, and give His life a ransom for many. Every time a person says a prayer, it is commun- ing with spirits, and it is spiritualism to commune with spirits. I. Corin., 8. For to one is given, by the spirit, the word of wisdom ; to another the word of know- ledge, by the same spirit. 9. To another faith by the same spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same spirit. 115 THE GIFT OF HEALING. io. To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another interpretation of tongues. ii. But all these worketh that one and the self same spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will. 12. For as the body is one, and hath many mem- bers and all the members of that one body, being many, are one body ; so also is Christ. Deut., Chap. 8, 18. But thou shalt pray the Lord thy God ; for it is He that giveth thee power to get wealth. Samuel, Chap. 9, 9. In Israel when a man went to inquire of God, thus he spake, Come and let us go to the seer, for he that is now called a Prophet was before time called a seer. In verse 18 we have the subject of wealth, that we may pray for it and expect it, and He will give us the power to get. The belief in and expression of prophecy went out for a while, because of the fear that the pople developed when they saw how the prophets and saints were persecuted by religious organizations, but we are prepared to fight the battle all over ;again, if necessary, to gain our religious freedom. Hebrews, Chap. 12, 9. Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence; shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits and life? Hebrews, Chap. 9, 14. How much more shall the blood of Christ who through the Eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, purge your 116 THE GIFT OF HEALING. conscience from dead works to serve the living God. 16. For where a testament is, there must also of necessity be the death of the testator, for a testa- ment is of force after men are dead, otherwise it is of no strength at all while the testator liveth. Christ was filled with sorrow at the thought of leaving His Apostles, but He must give up His life to fulfil the prophec)^ that was made by the prophets of old, and prove the gift of prophecy by laying down His life as proof. There are people today who would crucify all mediums and Psychics and all those who are not of the same belief as they are; let them beware, for they may loose their hold for making the attempt. Romans, Chapter 14, 7. For none of us liveth to> himself and no man dieth to himself. 8. For whether we live, we live unto the Lord; and whether we die we die unto the Lord, therefore we are the Lord's. 9. For to this end, Christ both died, and rose and revived that He might be Lord of the dead and living. 20. For meat, destroy not the work of God. All things indeed are purej but it is evil for that man who eateth with offense. It is good neither to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor anything whereby thy brother stumbleth, or is offended, or is made weak. Corinthians 1, Chapter 8, 13. Wherefore, if meat make my brother to offend, I will eat no flesh while the world standeth, lest I make my brother to offend. 117 THE GIFT OF HEALING. St. Mark, Chapter 7, 9. And He said unto them. Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition. 15. There is nothing from without a man that entering into him can defile him; but the things which come out of him, these are they that defile the man. St. Matthew, Chapter 15, 18. For out of the heart proceed evil throughts, murders, adulteries, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. 20. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashen hands, defileth not a man. St. Matthew, Chapters 23-34. Wherefore behold, I send unto you prophets, and wise men ; and scribes ; and some of them ye shall kill and crucify ; and some of them ye shall scourge in your syna- gogues, and persecute them from city to city. And then came the only Christ to teach them to do good with the gift of prophecy and to give out the truth, instead of deceiving, and taking from the poor that which they had worked for. Spiritualism was the first religion and will be the last, for noth- ing can undermine the teachings of Christ, some churchmen preach from the words of Jesus but seek to eliminate the spiritual belief which Christ taught so as to make the church commandment supreme. St. Mark, Chapter 9, 17. And one of them said, Master, I have brought thee my son, which hath a dumb spirit. 18. And wheresoever He taketh him, he teareth him and he foameth, and gnasheth with his teeth, and he pineth away; and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out ; and they could not. 118 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 20. And they brought him unto Him; and when they saw him, straightway the spirit tare him, and he fell to the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21. And He asked his father, how long is it ago since this came unto him and he said, of a child. 22. And oftimes it has cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him but if thou canst do anything have compassion on us, and help us. 23. Jesus said unto him, if thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believest. 24. And straight the father of the child cried out, and said with tears, Lord I believe ; help thou my unbelief. 25. When Jesus saw that the people came run- ning together, he rebuked the foul spirit, saying unto him, Thou dumb and deaf spirit, I charge thee, come out of him and enter no more into him. 26. And the spirit cried and rent him sore and came out of him ; and he was as one dead, and many said, he is dead. 2J. But Jesus took him by the hand, and lifted him up ; and he arose. 28. And when he was come into the house, his disciples asked Him privately, why could we not cast him out? St. Mark, Chapter 9, 29. And he said unto them, this kind can come forth by nothing, but by prayer and fasting. This verse explains why every one cannot heal, and why many doubt spirit power to heal, people whose minds are occupied by business or labor, do not have the time to pray and concentrate on the spiritual, you will notice all through the Bible, that 119 THE GIFT OF HEALING. the guiding angel, commanded those he had chosen to give out the message to go out in the solitude and commune with nature in the wilds, and get near to God. by fasting and prayer, and avoid the every- day cares of life. Those who live away from public life develop their psychic power to a greater extent than those who are interested in their families and social life. Christ Tells the Disciples to Recognize Anyone Coming in His Name. St. Mark, Chapter 9, 38. And John answered Him saying Master, we saw one casting out devils in Thy name, and He followeth not us ; and we for- bade him, because he followeth not us." 39. But Jesus said, forbid him not, for there is no man which shall do a miracle in My name, that can lightly speak evil of Me. 50. For he that is not against us is on our part. 41. For whosoever shall give you a cup of water in My name, because ye belong to Christ, verily I say unto you, he shall not lose his reward. These chapters give the stand Christ takes in re- gard to religion, it does not matter which religion or association, you belong to as long as you do your work or cures or charities in His name, and those denominations, that are making such a big display of religion and are jealous over the success other religions are having that are working quietly and are not setting themselves up as above all others, are doing the same as the disciples did, are trying to drive out other religions, because they are not of their following. 120 THE GIFT OF HEALING. They do not appreciate the good work not done under their supervision and denominational name, but Christ will continue to do His good work through many avenues, until all are reclaimed and recognize the spirituality of man and every form of life. Then all will be of one belief and that is spiritualism. St. Mark, Chapter n, 43. But whosoever of you will be great among you, shall be your minister. 45. For even the son of man came not to be min- istered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many. St. Matthew, Chapter 25. 8. For one is your Master even Christ ; and all ye brethren. 8. And call no man Father upon the earth, for one is your Father which is in heaven. 11. But he that is greatest among you shall be your servant. This is true of men in all professions, the clergyman must serve his congregation, the physician his patients ; the lawyer, his clients ; the professor, his students; he who is greatest in his profession, has become so by serving many, Jesus said. Chapter 12, 26. And as touching the dead that they arise; have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spoke unto him, saying I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob. 27. He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living. 29. Jesus answered, Hear, O Israel ; the Lord our God is one Lord. 30. And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with 121 THE GIFT OF HEALING. all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength : this is the first commandment. In this thirtieth verse, Jesus says plainly that these three Fathers, although they had passed away, are still living, and that there are no dead, but all are living, and have obeyed the Master's call, to be placed where they may do good, just as the fisher- men obeyed the call, Follow Me and be fishers of men. Christ Condemns Display and Long Garments. St. Mark, Chapter 15, 38. And He said unto them in His doctrine, beware of the scribes, which love to go in long clothing, and love salutations in the market places. 39. And the chief seats in the synagogues and the uppermost rooms at feasts. These verses are directly contrary to the clergy of some denominations who set themselves up al- most as kings and expect the same homage as a king does, and attempt to overthrow other religions that are doing good in His name. Matthew, Chapter 23, 5. But all their works they do for to be seen of men ; they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the borders of their gar- ments. 8. But be not ye called Rabbi; for one is your master, even Christ, and all ye are brethren. 9. And call no man Father upon the earth, for one is your Father, which is in heaven. 15. Woe unto you scribes and Pharisees, Hypo- crites ! for ye compass sea and land to make one 122 THE GIFT OF HEALING. proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him two fold more the child of hell. 29. Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, Hypo- crites ! because ye build to the tombs of prophets, and garnish the sepulches of the righteous. 30. And say, If we had been in the days of our fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets. 31. Wherefore ye be witnesses unto yourselves that ye are the children of them which killed the prophets. Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord. St. Mark, Chapter 16, 15. And He said, go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. Missionaries are now obeying this command and carrying the Light that Jesus brought to the World to every corner of the earth, and the countries that had not advanced under their own belief are now progressing under religion that Christ taught, for they have learned brotherly love, and are taking their stand among the nations of the world instead of warring among themselves as all nations do, who do not know God. Chapter 16, 9. Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils. 10. And she went and told them that had been with Him, as they mournel and wept. 11. And when they had heard that He was alive, they believed her not. 123 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 14. Afterward He appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their un- belief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen Him after He was risen. 15. And he said, go ye into all the world and preach the Gospel to every creature. 16. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. 17. And these signs shall follow them that be- lieve : In My name shall they cast out devils ; they shall speak with new tongues. We are told here that a sure sign of our faith and belief is our power to heal and control spirits, and prophesy. St. Luke, Chapter 10, 1. After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before His face into every city and place, whither He Himself would come. 2. Therefore said He unto them, the harvest truly is great, but the laborers are few ; pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth laborers into His harvest. 3. Go your ways; behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves. 5. And into whatsoever house ye enter, first say Peace be to this house. 6. And if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it; if not, it shall turn to you again. 7. And in the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give for the laborer is worthy of his hire. Go not from house to house. 8. And into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you. 124 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 9. And heal the sick that are therein and say unto them, Thy Kingdom of God is come nigh you. 10. But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same and say, 11. Even the dust of your cuy, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you ; notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you. 16. He that heareth you heareth Me ; and he that despiseth you despiseth Me; and he that despiseth Me despiseth Him that sent Me. 23. And He turned unto His disciples and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see. It is only by the heaven-given psychic power, that one can see as the disciples saw, and the psy- chics of today have the same gift of vision and they will meet a just retribution if they use this sacred power wrongfully to gain wealth and to defraud. The Acts,, Chapter 7, 52. Which of the prophets have not your Father persecuted? And they have slain them which shewed before of the coming of the Just One ; of whom ye have been now the be- trayers and murderers. 53. Who have received the law by the disposi- tion of angels and have not kept it. 54. When they heard these things they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed their teeth. 55. But he being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56. And said, Behold I see the heavens opened, 125 THE GIFT OF HEALING. and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God. 57. Then they cried with loud voices, and stop- ped their ears, and ran upon him with one accord. 58. And cast him out of the city and stoned him ; and the witnesses laid down their clothes at a young man's feet, whose name was Saul. 59. And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit. 60. And he kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, Lord, lay not this sin to their charge, and when he had said this he fell asleep. We learn from this chapter that St. Stephen gave up his life because of prophecy and believing in Christ's teaching. Saul mentioned here is St. Paul who afterward was spoken to by the voice of Christ and he fell down in terror when he heard the voice and saw the light; he was converted from this day and was in a trance, and he in turn was persecuted for prophesying and preaching of Christ. Chapter 8, 5. And Saul was consenting to his death. And at that time there was a great persecu- tion against the church which was at Jerusalem ; and they were all scattered abroad throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria, Epceh the Apostles. 6. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did. 7. For unclean spirits crying with loud voice, came out of many that were possessed with them; and many taken with palsies and that were lame, were healed. 8. And there was great joy in the city. 126 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 18. And when Simon saw that through laying on of hands by the Apostles, the Holy Ghost was given, he offered them money. 19. Saying give me also this power, that on whomsoever I lay my hands, he may receive the Holy Ghost. 20. But Peter said unto him, thy money perish with thee, because thou hast thought that the gift of God may be purchased with money. 21. Thou hast neither part nor lot in this matter, for thy heart is not right in the sight of God. 22. Repent therefore of this thy wickedness and pray God, if perhaps the thought of thine heart may be forgiven thee. 23. For I perceive that thou art in the gall of bit- terness, and in the bond of iniquity. 24. Then answered Simon, and said Pray ye to the Lord for me, that none of these things which ye have spoken come upon me. 127 1/ THE GIFT OF HEALING. INSPIRATIONAL WRITING. APOCRYPHA. Esras, II, Chapter 14, 58. And tomorrow at night thou shalt remain here. 59. And so shall the Highest shew thee visions of the high things, which the most high will do unto them that dwell upon earth in the last days. Here is the promise that psychic vision will be given as long as the world lasts, just, as we have it today. Chapter 12, 51. But I remained in the field seven days as the angel commanded me ; and did eat only in those days of the flowers of the field, and had my meat of the herbs. This verse teaches us that we must not eat flesh, if we would be spiritual and receive communication from the angel band that are sent to teach us. Chapter 14, 26. And when thou hast done, some things shalt thou publish and some things shalt thou shew secretly to the wise; tomorrow at this hour shalt thou begin to write. 42. The Highest gave understanding unto the five men, and they wrote the wonderful visions of the night, that were told ; which they knew not and they sat forty days and they wrote in the day and at night they ate bread. 43. As for me I spake in the day and held not my tongue by night. 128 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 44. In forty days they wrote two hundred and four books. 45. And it came to pass, when the forty days were fulfilled, that the Highest spake : saying, the first that thou hast written publish openly, that the worthy may read it. 46. But keep the seventy last, that thou mayest deliver them only to such as be wise among the people. Chapter 15. 1. Behold, speak thou in the ears of my people, the words of prophecy which I will put in thy mouth, saith the Lord. 2. And cause them to be written in paper, for they were faithful and true. The Author has had the same inspiration and the same command from on high, to write as it is given to her, and permit the spirit world to express its will, in the physical sense, through her. The Faith Cure in Science. "Dr. George W. Jacoby, the veteran neurologist, has just illustrated anew some of the curious con- flicts and agreements which appear in modern methods of treating disease. On the one hand is the faith-curist relying on amulets and charms, in- voking miracles, or appealing to the native powers of the mind ; on the other comes the scientific physician, claiming that disease is real, and provid- ing physical remedies for it. For a long time it seemed as if there could be nothing scientific in the occult, and nothing occult in the scientific. But we now confront a certain interblending of the two methods. If the occultist is more and more leaning 129 THE GIFT OF HEALING. on science, so the scientist is more and more com- ing to recognize a soul of things "good" in the oc- cult. The faith-curist must know something of neu- rology, and certainly of metaphysics ; the physician who would be up-to-date must be versed in sug- gestion and psychotherapy. It is admitted by both that many nervous maladies may not only be miti- gated, but sometimes entirely cured by mental in- fluence. The power of appeals to imagination, sen- timent, passion, even when exercised through "un- truthful statements," is expressly emphasized by Dr. Jacoby. "Why," he says, "should not the phy- sician make use of this power of imagination in order to restore his patients to health and content- ment?" Science has thus found a valuable agency for supplementing medicine in the treatment of disease. The patient is kept hopeful, encouraged to expect improvement of his condition, taught through thick and thin to look forward to convalescence. If he is worse, it is well that he should think he is better; if he is no better, it is just as well that he should not be persuaded of the fact. In time he may be convinced that there is nothing really the matter with him. The science of healing is doubtless right in repudiating the illusions of the occultist, and they must be pared down to the vanishing point. But as long as it needs "suggestion and psycho- therapy" it must cling to the essence, if not the vagaries of the "faith cure." It will be a finished world and a perfect humanity that need no help from the great power of the make believe." 130 THE GIFT OF HEALING. A Remarkable Statement. "During a recent trial in Middlesex County in Massachusetts, an aged Professor connected with Harvard College and a regular M. D., made the fol- lowing statement. It was a trial by jury and he was called as a witness and he said that 90 per cent of the calls a doctor makes are unnecessary because the patients would get well without any treatment, 5 per cent will die anyway and 5 per cent can be cured by him. Cannot many of the wonderful cures we read about nowadays where medicine is tabooed, take place because the physi- cian is not allowed to experiment." These statements were copied from newspapers, they will give you an idea of scientific opinion on faith cures. To Rest. Just, as in the evening, we go to our homes to rest, so in the evening of life we go home to God who sent us out into this life to grow and do his work here. / Faith Healing. St. Luke, Chap. 9-49. And John answered and said, Master, we saw one casting out devils in thy name; and we forbade him, because he followeth not with us. 50. And Jesus said unto him, forbid him not, for he that is not against us is for us. Jesus teaches a lesson to all religions in this 13] THE GIFT OF HEALING. chapter and that lesson is that it does not matter, whether the healer be of one denomination or an- other or one following or another as long as they come in his name and are not against him, and the Father who sent him. Mediumship. There are many phases of mediumship, there are trance mediums, who while in an unconscious con- dition are used by some spirit control to give ad- vice to anyone consulting the spirits through the hearing the spirit voice without being entranced. Clairvoiance is seeing objects and persons which the mediums describe and explain to others. Some people develop all or several of these phases. I will explain how some of these phases are ex- pressed for the benefit of those who do not under- stand, for I have seen many of them laugh at messages when they were given excellent read- ings. But they did not understand the impersona- tion of the conditions that were being described. A medium may describe the suffering some one endured before they passed out, and locate the pain by placing their hand over their heart or throat or head, etc. The medium does not always get messages from the dead or about the dead, but may t>e describing the physical condition of yourself or relatives or friends; it may be that some spirit there is anxious to speak to you of the condition of some friend of the spirits who is now living and if you will ask how they can be cured they may tell you of some remedy or just what the cause of their suffering is. 132 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Some mediums seldom get messages in regard to those who have passed away, but messages for the living, advising them on business and the affairs of life so they may be able to better their condition. Our Aged Friends. What would be more beautiful than a settlement for aged people? Little four-room houses built of cement, each with its sheltered little piazza, and women attendants to look in on them each day and to help them if they need assistance in any way. Some day this dream of mine, I hope, will be re- alized and I will see the square of land I have: pictured with its rows of little houses, all around the square, leaving a park or garden in the center; each having a little plot of ground for gardens for those who like to work in the garden and raise a few vegetables, etc. This will be living indeed for those who have grown old with the struggle of life in the cities. I can picture their happy faces when they know that they will not have to worry any more for fear they will not be able to pay the rent. This dream of mine is not impossible, for there are large tracts of un- occupied land only a few miles out of the city that are not very expensive, and where every modern im- provement can be used. A few thousand dollars would start this settle- ment and then the kind hearted public would assist in maintaining it, as they know they would be wel- come there later on when they were too old to be self-supporting. Dear friends, think how much good can be done 133 THE GIFT OF HEALING. with a little money, and people wear fortunes in jewels to adorn themselves with and for the other people to look at and admire. My little settlement for the aged and helpless would be much more beautiful in my eyes than all the jewels in the world as Christ said, "They are my mothers and brothers and sisters," and I hope to have the oppor- tunity to work to get these homes for them, and to tell them that if they haven't any near relatives that I am willing to be their relative, by doing all I can for them. In every large city there is a Zoo, and wild ani- mals are caged there and attendants are paid to take care of them and money is paid for their food. If they were left in their natural surroundings they would not be dependent on anyone for their sup- port, and the suffering physically and mentally that these poor captives endure is awful. Death would be more merciful. People can see these animals in museums ; it is not necessary to see living creatures caged in order to study natural history. Many children can tell you about wild animals who do not know anything about domestic animals. The money spent on maintaining a Zoo of suffering creatures would better be spent for the support of the aged and helpless. Many worthy people never earn enough money to be able to save any, and they bring up children and they hope that their children will help them and the children generally marry as soon as they are able to work and cannot assist them or they are too selfish to think of the sacrifice their parents made for them. 134 THE GIFT OF HEALING. If any of you who are reading this book are thinking of leaving money for charity, think this over. A sum to the Humaine Society would buy the land for the settlement for the aged and five hundred dollars would build one of the little houses. It would not be long if each person that could afford it would leave five hundred dollars be- fore there would be quite a row of little houses. This would be better than giving them the money for they would be sure of a home, and when they were gone some other worthy people could move in. And it would be a source of good for all time to come, as a monument to your name, for each little home will be named after the donor. St. Luke, Chapter 19. 8. And Zaccheaeus stood before the Lord ; behold Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken anything from any man by false accusation, I restore him four fold. 9. And Jesus said unto him, this day is salvation come to this house, forasmuch as he also is a son of Abraham. 10. For the son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. Chapter 12. 33. Sell that ye have, and give alms ; provide yourselves bags which wax not old, a treas- ure in the heavens that faileth not, where no thief approacheth, neither moth eorrupteth. 34. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The Liquor Question. State, Church and Municipalities have been try- 135 THE GIFT OF HEALING. ing to solve the liquor question from the time the world begun. You will find this subject in the Bible, but no one has been able to regulate it yet. Prohibition does not have the desired effect, for in all prohibitory states liquor is sold on the quiet in kitchen bar rooms, in stables, in the woods and anywhere that they can hope to sell without being- discovered. And the quality of the drink is of the poorest grade, very often poisonous and injurious, causing all sorts of nervous disorders and insanity. Those who have studied this question have found after investigation that a high license is best, as the law enforces the sale of only pure drinks and those that are the least injurious. It is not considered fair to those who can drink and not become a slave to it, to be deprived of the privilege of using it if they wish. But it is the poor "Moth" that continually darts back into the flame of the saloon that we must con- sider. The question is, how can we protect him against this awful failing. He is a constant source of torture to his family and friends, and a most pitiable object as well as an annoyance to every one he comes in contact with. It is the hope of scientists that Medical Science will finally solve this problem for Medical Science must necessarily take its stand in the world from this time forth, on the side of prevention instead of cure, for many ills of the physical body could be prevented if we avoided the foods and other things that are injurious. We must study this out for ourselves. Many cannot eat a hearty meal at night and feel welL 136 THE GIFT OF HEALING. They should eat a dinner on the noon hour. Others cannot eat meat for breakfast without becoming bilious. Then eat only cereals. In time you will find what does agree with your system. Love. Then man or woman who marries from any other motive than love, is committing an awlful crime against themselves, against the laws of God and against their descendants. It is from alliances of this kind that the degenerate makes his appear- ance, every child should have the right to be born of love, this is its natural inheritance and it should not be taken from him, for the law of God and na- ture is love. You will see the result of love marriages in the people who walk in the humble paths of life. They are one family and remain so; they love each other and are interested in each other and rejoice over any good that may come to each other. Notice the difference in the marriage of ambition. The first question asked in regard to a couple is "did they do well?" meaning from a financial standpoint, not "is it a love match, and how happy they will be." Consider the love Christ had for his apostles and how deeply be grieved because he must leave them and return to the spirit life, whence he came. The only religion that will stand the test, of time is the one that will live brotherly love. It is my earnest hope, that in time spiritualists will get together and form an anti-suicide society and collect funds for the same and send out word to those who are ill and 137 THE GIFT OF HEALING. out of work to apply to the society for assistance until they can help themselves. This is the religion of Christ and if we express the God life within us by assisting a helpless broth- er or sister and save them from casting their soul back into God's face by suicide, we will have ac- complished much more than erecting imposing buildings ; we will be assuring those who are in doubt that there is a God by bringing them in con- tact with Him through brotherly love. This asso- ciation would go a long way toward perpetuating spiritual belief, for he has said, "By their work ye shall know them." When love is the all of life, the vice and sorrow that goes hand in hand will be eliminated. Love is now treated as a joke by the majority of people. Display of luxury and wealth are placed above sacred love in the home life. When a man or woman have built their home upon ambition, the re- sult is disastrous after the said ambition is gratified, for love is the soul of nature, the life of the physical and spiritual self, and love for anything artificial cannot take the place of this God-given emotion. All forms of life God has given and we should protect the lower organization, as much as the higher because He has created all. It is just as absurd to refuse to appreciate the beauty and skill in a statuette, because the sculp- tor has been skillful in monuments and groups. The statuette is just as dear to the sculptor as the larger group or monument and he has put the same thought and work in the smaller creation. And so it is with God, he gave of his spirit to every living 138 THE GIFT OF HEALING. creature, and spirit is life, and the same spirit per- vades all life. Spiritualists, New Thoughtists, Theosophists and all you spiritualists under different names, get to- gether, and form a "brotherhood of man society," where any one in need could get a loan without in- terest while convalescing. This would be the true religion to save them from suicide or starving to death. This would bring them to know God. We are told by writers that religion is losing ground ; this is because there is too much pomp and ceremony and not enough of God. Whispering Leaves. There was a rustling among the leaves on the great oak tree overshadowing the lawn. The little rose blooming on a rose bush near by said, why all this commotion? you are so stately as a rule. "Just think," said the leaves, "a man has killed him- self in our park because he felt that he was not of much use and he would not be missed because there were so many people." Why he will be missed just as much as a blade of grass would be on the lawn down there nodding their heads toward the lawn. The rose swayed her pretty head toward the lawn and said, "no one would miss a blade of grass." The leaves said every blade of grass has its individuality and is of great use in beautifying the lawn. If two hundred blades should die out thinking they would not be missed, all the beauty of the lawn would be de- stroyed and all the labor and care of the Gardener would be in vain, as the lawn would be unsightly 139 THE GIFT OF HEALING. and it is the same with people, each individual is a blade of grass in God's eternal plan. And whenever an individual ends his life before the appointed time he has spoiled the effect of the great eternal plan, just as the lawn is spoiled by the dying grass. Each individual is of very much im- portance and should be content to fulfill their part of the Eternal Plan trusting unto the end for if they were not needed they would not be here. Medicine. Ezekiel, Chapter 47. And the Fruit thereof shall be for meat, and the Leaf thereof for Medicine. You will hear anti-medicine faddists say, "Man- made Laws." How absurd this remark is when God created every herb and food; everything we eat is medicinal ; vegetables contain potash, soda iron as well as different kinds of salts ; even the ani- mal food we eat contains some form of medicine, and eggs also. Spiritualists should use the methods of Jesus in healing and also make use of every modern assist- ance to bring about good health. Paul. Hebrews. Chapter 1. God who, at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by prophets. He hath in these days spoken to us by his son. Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation. 140 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Vivisection. The day will come when vivisection will take its place in history along with burnt offering, sacri- fice of human life, etc., for it is a merciless sacrifice of the God given life and a torture of helpless ani- mals. Chemistry will supply the necessary knowledge to offset all ills of the physical body. Where is the inspired one who will discover the remedy for this cruel evil? If Radium will cure cancers, etc., it will prove how useless the torture of animals for producing toxins has been. Radium as a Life-Saver. "The claim that radium can restore the hardened arteries of middle-aged persons to a healthy condi- tion and so prolong- life was made by Dr. Sauber- mann of Berlin in a lecture in London before the Rontgen Society this week. If the theory is cor- rect it will be possible for a few dollars to buy a radium apparatus which will manufacture an elixir of youth. The apparatus consists of an earthen- ware receptacle containing a minute amount of ra- dium, which is placed at the bottom of a glass bot- tle. The bottle is filled with water. In the course of time the water becomes charged with radium emanations. The radium remains active for hun- dreds of years, so it is only necessary to renew the water in order to get any number of doses." 141 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Peace. The survival of the fittest, is the law of nature as well as the nations, and this is as it should be. Divinity should rule man, in his dealings with his brother man, but each nation should assume power and fortify and be so strong a power as to maintain peace by this very strength so that all other nations will realize that it will be safer to arbitrate their differences. The Agitator. Every little while some man makes his appear- ance as a Labor Agitator. He is to emancipate the working man, etc., you will find this agitator living on the fat of the land while the poor fellows whom he has succeeded in stirring up to quit work in a body on one pretence or another, are having a hard time. The working man of today should not permit any stranger to upset him in this manner, for if he has a wrong he is intelligent enough to make it known and have it made right. There is just as much sense in a man of this stamp who feels above work, and is trying to bring working men up to his belief that they are ill treated because they do not have everything that their employers do, as it would be for a rose to try to bring the whole field of daisies and dandelions up with him into the rose garden, each is out of place. 142 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Lesser Lights. To you who feel that you do not amount to any- thing in the world consider the stars as compared with the sun, and do your best, and you will be ap- preciated as the stars are, for who does not admire the stars ; we miss them if they do not put forth their little light. Faith Cures. A short time ago the Holy Jumpers were brought into Court for their method of healing. Their patients were placed in an unconscious con- dition upon the platform and when they came out of this condition they pronounced themselves cured. The Bible mentions this unconscious condition be- fore some of the cures that Jesus performed. The only mistake that the faith curists made was that they did not place the different sexes apart, say at each end of the platform.v 143 THE GIFT OF HEALING. REDEMPTION. The Lost Sheep. St. Luke 15, 4. What man among you having one hundred sheep, if he loses one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness and go after that which is lost until he finds it. 5. And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders rejoicing. 6. And when he cometh home, he calleth to- gether his friends and neighbors, saying unto them, rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost. 7. I say unto you that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than ninety and nine just persons which need no repen- tance. To you, who have erred and were lost, if you erred you have suffered, and the suffering and sor- row developed your soul, and you progressed, for progression is the law of nature. You paid the penalty of suffering and if you find yourself, that is to do right. You stand in even better light spiritu- ally, than if you had never fallen, and physically you are able to assist others, to avoid the errors you fell into. If not you are able to lead them out of the danger or point out the way, and the good seed will grow, for all is good, all comes from God. 144 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Every soul will be redeemed in the end. Those who do not progress, must live many lives on this sphere, or on the spirit side, to reach the same con- dition as the one who did not transgress and they will suffer through those numerous conditions which bring about the refining of the spirit. St. Luke 18, 2J. He said, the things which are impossible with men are possible with God. 10. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost. 45. And he went into the temple and begun to cast out them that sold therein, and them that bought. 46. Saying, this is my house of prayer but ye have made it a den of thieves. It is the duty of all spiritualists to seek" to elimi- nate all the mediums or those who profess to being such, who defraud those who go to them in all con- fidence. Spiritualism is a great truth, and if those who are real mediums will assist in weeding out the fradulent, then our beautiful belief will have the re- spect that it justly deserves and our numbers will increase accordingly, as the time is at hand for spiritualism to take its proper stand in the world. In St. Luke as quoted above, Christ says very plainly that his temple is not for gain. If a person is an Atheist and does not believe in Jesus, or God, have nothing to do with him, for Christ said, "Those who love God are my brothers and mother and sisters." We are told that if a per- son does not believe that he has a soul, that his soul will be taken from him and he will be as nothing and will never meet his loved ones again. 145 THE GIFT OF HEALING. An evil person may entertain some holy emotion and do some kind act, that is from the very heart, and this one act will wipe out all the error of the past and make him very acceptable to God. I have given proofs of spiritualism in this book, and if any medium or healer is prosecuted because they are using this gift of healing, they can turn to the passages in this book, copied from the Bible, and their right to heal. A Judge cannot repudiate this proof as the Bible is used by the Courts to prove the good faith of a witness in swearing to the truth of a statement. Spiritualism. Daniel Chapt. 5, 4. They drank wine and praised the gods of gold, and of silver, of brass, of iron and of stone. 5. In that same hour came forth fingers of a man's hand, and wrote over against the candlestick upon the plaster of the wall of the King's palace, and the King saw part of the hand that wrote. 7. The King cried aloud to bring the astro- logers, the soothsayers, and the King spake to the wise men, whosoever shall read this writing, and show the interpretation thereof shall be clothed with scarlet, and have a chain of gold about his neck and shall be the third ruler in the Kingdom. Then came all the King's wise men ; but they could not read the writing. 11. Then the Queen said "There is a man in thy Kingdom in whom is the spirit of the holy gods," and wisdom like the wisdom of the gods was found in him. 146 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 12. Forasmuch as an excellent spirit and knowl- edge, and understanding, interpreting of dreams, and shewing of hard sentences and dissolving doubts were found in the same Daniel. And Daniel interpreted the writing for the King. This writing on the wall is the same as the slate writing of to-day, but as there has been so much fraud perpetrated by mediums in this "writing," people do not have much faith in it. Daniel, Chapter 6. 27. He delivereth and rescueth and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in the earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions. Deuteronomy, Chapter 22. 5. The woman shall not wear that which per- taineth unto a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment; for all that do so are abomina- tion unto the Lord thy God. 6. If a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way in any tree, or on the ground, whether they be young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young. 7. But thou shalt in any wise let the dam go and take the young to thee and that thou mayest pro- long thy days. Here we have kindness to animals as all God- fearing people should have. St. Luke 10, 17. "And the seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name. 147 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 20. Jesus said: "Notwithstanding in this re- joice not, that the spirits are subject unto you; but rejoice, because your names are written in heaven." When you tell church members, that spiritualism is the religion of the Bible, they say, "Oh, well, it doesn't mean that." Now what does the above 20th verse of St. Luke mean. "Rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you." Does not that con- firm the facts that spirits are a reality? Spiritual- ists accept the Bible as a whole and it pervades the Bible all the way through and we, who commune with spirits are highly favored. The Simple Life. There are many good, normal men and women in the world, and these do not come in contact with those who are abnormal and so they do not realize how many there are, who are almost insane on the subject of what they call "Having a Good Time." They crave wealth to indulge themselves in all ■sorts of excitement; the thought that they should be of some use in the world never enters their :head, as they do not allow themselves a moment's time to think of anything else but their own selfish -pleasure. If they are not having some excitement they are not fit to live with, as they are irritable and unhappy and when it comes to race suicide it is all for the best that these people should not perpetuate their kind. The parents of these men and women have de- prived themselves of everything thinking that they would be proud of their children when they grew 148 THE GIFT OF HEALING. up, but instead, their children look down on them and leave them when they need them most. They have been educated beyond their station in life and they can not find contentment anywhere. They spend their money having a good time, and can never hope to have a home of their own, as they can never save anything toward one. The foreign working people are different, they are always happy and content with their lot, they do not try to dress and live as the millionaires do, but aim to have something of their own. They create their own amusements by parties, music, and harmless entertainments, and if you will watch a group of these you will see that they love their neighbors and are doing their utmost to make it a happy time for all. Every country must return to the simple life if they do not want to reach decadence, as insanity is on the increase, and those who are studying the vice question, realize that craving for fresh excite- ment produces the degenerate, and the degenerate or abnormal person does, not appreciate nature, but loves the artificial. It is in our power to make the next generation perfectly normal if all will start right, and insist on plain living and not give their children everything that grown up people have. The peasant immi- grants are teaching us the way to progress, they save and own homes and buy land, while our pampered offspring are in furnished rooms, with- out a dollar ahead of them. Ask the heads of the different colleges and they will tell you that only a few of the shining lights 149 THE GIFT OF HEALING. who graduate from the colleges are ever heard from after they leave college. This is because they will not settle down to hard work after leaving college, and spend what little they have in going the pace. "The Light of Asia." The Protestant missionaries are carrying the light of Christ into all the countries that formerly worshipped idols. This Christ light will free them from many of the old customs that they clung to and made them slaves to tradition. We need more good sense in religion instead of more religion. We must spend less money on imposing structures and more in giving the aged comforts that they can not have in destitution. I never look at a tall church spire without think- ing how heartless those who ordered it built must be, to send a man up there to paint or repair it is the extreme of cruelty. When our religions have reached the height of perfection that Jesus intended they should, they will not think of outward display but the religion of the heart will be taught; then every one of our aged mothers will have a pension for the asking, as many would not ask for it unless sorely in need. The religion that will strive for this end is the real religion, for He said, 'Those who love my Father are my Mother, my Brother and Sisters," and these aged people are our Mothers and Broth- ers and every time one of them suffers from priva- tion, it is due to our lack of interest in this matter. Read the letters to the daily papers in the women's department and you will realize how self- ish humanity is becoming. They consider their 150 THE GIFT OF HEALING. parents who worked to bring them up a nuisance, and feel that they should not be obliged to support them when they are old and feeble, and many sons and daughters send them to public institutions and feel perfectly justified in doing so. They can not hope to prosper if they are unkind to these dear old people, for Christ said, "Honor thy Father and thy Mother that thy days may be long." Our world is progressing and growing better each day and church and state are discussing the welfare of those who are not able to support them- selves. It would not cost any more if the state gave the money to the parents to support their children than it would to pay their board in an institution; only those who have no relatives should be placed in institutions and even then a widowed mother with children of her own could give them better care and attention than they get at home. And it is the same with the aged, if they have any relatives willing to take them to board, they should be given the money that it costs to support them in the institution. Our dear old world is growing bet- ter all the time, in spite of the few clergymen who try to make us think that it is growing bad all the time. The world has increased in population but ac- cording to the size of that population it has not grown worse. The fellowship of man is stronger today than ever and you will notice the bond of sympathy that pervades all men in all nations. When any great calamity occurs we are one family then, brotherly love proves the Christ spirit, and when business men lay aside their work to get to- 151 THE GIFT OF HEALING. gether to discuss the welfare of others as they are doing today, our world is surely growing better, and the spirit of Christ rules the world today more than it ever has, for one need not profess any religion to live the brotherly love that Christ taught. Men and women of today aim to be of some use to their fellowmen. If you will stop to think you will find that no one can or has succeeded in undermining the teachings of Christ, after thou- sands of years, you will realize how deep is the ap- preciation of the beautiful life he led, with his fol- lowers going about with them by day, seeking the helpless and the poor and lowly and raising them up and teaching his honest-hearted followers to do the same and at night to sit with them wherever they happened to be, and explain the sayings they did not understand, for he was guiding them to see with spiritual eyes and hear with spiritual ears. He is teaching the Author these things now, and he will teach them to you also if you will receive him and open your eyes, ears and heart to what he would say to you. I have asked him to inspire me to place this teaching before you in such a light that you will feel as I do that he is here, and now, point- ing out the way just as he did to those lowly fisher- men who became his disciples. So many think that one must profess religion to have him come to them ; this is not so, he has the same interest in us that he had in those he picked up to make them his disciples. He did not seek to impress any religion but the love of God and the power of prophetic and psychic vision. For a real psychic can not be selfish, they must 152 THE GIFT OF HEALING. love every living thing, for all comes from the creator, Christ knew that with the gift of pro- phecy and healing we would be guided right and in this way enjoy life. Those who ridicule these things are only postponing their own progression as they will not develop the gift until their souls are fitted to receive it, as Christ has told you in some of the chapters I have quoted here. The Author does not accept these teachings be- cause others have told them to her, but because the gift has been given to her just as Christ and all the prophets received it. She has asked Christ and his emissaries, the shining lights who are her instruc- tors in the spirit life to use their power through her, to tell you of this gift which is yours if you will re- ceive it. In order to receive this gift you must give up self and not consider your side of a matter first ; you must not think, how much can I get out of my friends, but how much can I do for my friends and how helpful can I be in every walk of life? You must not hold any spiteful or envious thoughts, for if you wish any one ill, that same wrong will be inflicted on you before long. If you are jealous because some one has a lover and send them envious thoughts, you will be punished by losing your lover and friend and the same sorrow you wished on them will be given to you. And your friend will be used as the unconscious means of punishing you for sending out those evil thoughts. If you are envious because others are prosperous and have things that you do not have, vou will lose what you alreadv have ; just notice 153 V THE GIFT OF HEALING. this for yourself and you will find that every un- kind thought comes home to you in the end. Spiteful thoughts are a second nature to many people and ihey look disagreeable. It spoils their looks, as you can not harbor those thoughts and look and feel happy. Now talk to yourself on this subject. You, who feel so important and above others, and do not want any one to have any more than you do, just say to yourself, what do I amount to in the world, why do I think I am so im- portant and better than others? And you will find the answer is, I do not amount to much, the world outside of my own little circle could get along very well without me. If you will look at your real self, you will soon get in right and know that you are but a grain of sand on this earth and you will radi- ate indifference instead of spite and you will enjoy life much better in enjoying the good success of others. We are building our future life now, and those who have a spiteful nature say that they must tell people what they think of them and vent their spite on them. This is what the serpent does ; he tries to inflict poison on everything, and everybody is his enemy. He gets back what he radiates and that is hate. Stop and say to yourself, what will all the spite 'and venom amount to less than a hundred years hence, and you will see how useless it all is. Get away from those who do not use you right, and do not place yourself on a level with them by quarrel- ing with them. And if you cannot get away, close yourself to them, that is go about the house as if 154 THE GIFT OF HEALING. they do not exist and you will be happier, because you are making it pleasant for others. The trouble with many people is that they expect everyone to cater to them, they should know that this world was not for them alone but to be shared by all. Every time you stir up the venom within you, it causes suffering to yourself; it causes you to be ill, and as long as you are radiating hate to- ward that person, they are doing the same towards you, and you are not free to think your own thoughts until you get right again by radiating in- difference. The mantle of shame may be placed upon your- self, if you think immoral thoughts of others, this may come through yourself or some one near and dear to you; because you do not understand a friendship or intimacy does not necessarily make it immoral. It simply appears so to you because your thoughts are impure; many a virtuous person has an immoral mind, as they think everyone bad but themselves, and the badness is in their own hearts. And there is a just retribution that over- takes them in the end, they are made ill or have some great sorrow inflicted upon them, to try and take their thoughts from evil. HYMN. "My God is reconciled, His pardoning voice I hear, He owns me for his child And I no longer fear. 155 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Jesus paid it all, All the debt I owe, Sin that left a crimson stain, He washed it white as snow." Vegetarianism. Meat produces heat, and in warm countries, heat is avoided, as it causes diseases of the blood. Mod- ern dwellings are at the temperature of summer heat, so that any heat creating food is unnecessary for the human system. Meat supplies more strength for a short time but it wears out the sytem for that reason, the same as if you should keep a piece of machinery at high power all the time, it is soon worn out. You will hear people say "I am going to eat meat." Yes, and they will have their cancers, and tumors, and craving for strong drink, and other ex- cesses that lead to insanity, which statistics tell us is on the increase; stimulating foods cause auto- intoxication and the over-worked nerves break down. Vegetarianism of the Bible. Daniel Chap i, 8^ "But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the por- tion of the king's meat, nor with the wine which he drank ; therefore he requested of the prince of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself. 10. "And the prince of the eunuchs said, I fear 156 THE GIFT OF HEALING. my Lord the king, who hath appointed meat and your drink; for why should he see your faces worse liking than the children which are of your sort? Then shall ye make me endanger my head to the king." 12. "Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days ; and let them give us pulse to eat and water to drink." 15. "And at the end of ten days their coun- tenance appeared fairer and fatter in flesh than all the children which did eat a portion of the king's meat." These passages, prove vegetarianism. Daniel, Chapter 1, 16. "Thus Melzar took away the portion of their meat and drink ; and gave them pulse." 17. "As for these four children God gave them knowledge and skill in all learning and wisdom: and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams. 20. "And in all matters of understanding that the king inquired of them he found them ten times better than all the magicians and astrologers, that were in all his realm." This proves that the vegetarian diet makes the mind clearer, and to avoid eating the flesh of any living thing brings us closer to spirit land. Daniel had the gift of prophecy, also of inter- pretation. This is a great gift as there are many who see visions who are not able to explain their meaning. 157 THE GIFT OF HEALING. What the Bible Says of Women, i Esdras. 14. O ye men, it is not the great king, nor the multitude of men — neither is it wine that excelleth ; Are they not women? 15. Women have borne the king and all the peo- ple that bear rule by sea and land. 16. Even of them came they, and they nourished them up that planted vineyards from whence the wine cometh. 17. These also make garments for men; these bring glory unto men and without women cannot men be. 18. Yea, and if men have gathered together gold and silver, or any other goodly things go, do they not gape and even with open-mouth fix their eyes on her, and have not all men more unto her than unto silver or gold, or any goodly thing whatso- ever? 20. A man leaveth his own father that brought him up, and his own country, and cleaveth unto his wife. 21. He sticketh not to spend his life with his wife and remembereth neither father nor mother nor country. 22. By this also must know that women have dominion over you; do ye not labor and toil and give and bring all to the woman. 28. And now do ye not believe me? Is not the king great in his power? Do not all regions fear to touch him? 158 THE GIFT OF HEALING. 29. Yet did I see him and Apame, the king's concubine the daughter of the Admirable Bartacus, sitting at the right hand of the kind. 30. And taking the crown from the king's head and setting it upon her own head, she also struck the king with her left hand. 31. And yet for all this the king gaped and gazed at her with open mouth % if she laughed upon him the king laughed also but if she took any dis- pleasure at him the king was fair to flutter that she might become reconciled to him again. 40. Neither in her judgment is any unrighteous- ness, and she is the strength, kingdom, power, and majesty of all ages. Blessed be the God of Truth. Progression of the Old Testament. All through the old testament we find seers and prophets, and many of them foretold the future most accurately, but many others intermingled their own ideas and beliefs with their prophetic visions and in this way slandered God, especially where they make him a "God of Vengeance" and thirsting for blood. Can you imagine anything so cruel and so un- reasonable as to burn helpless animals for sacrifice, and to cut the throat of others and sprinkle the altars of public Temples with the blood of the vic- tims? What sacrifice is it to injure some living creature and make an offering of it? It is taking something already given by God and offering it back to him and that is no sacrifice at all, but if we should deprive ourselves of something and sacrifice ourselves in some way as an offering to 159 THE GIFT OF HEALING. God, that would be a real sacrifice and one worth while. You will notice all through the Bible that a leader was sent in different generations to lead the people on in progression, as this could not be done all in one century you will notice that we find Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist, Paul and Jesus, each one trying to bring the people out of the cruel belief that was keeping them from progressing; even circumcision was one of their cruelties. It seems that their idea of God was a fearful one, his anger must be appeased by torture of some living creature. Jesus came and taught circumcision of the heart which is to cut out all selfishness and punish our- selves by doing good for others. The God of spirit- ualism is all mercy, all kindness and all love and the more we appreciate every form of life the more we are deserving of the God love, and the more kind- ness he will show us. And the leader and great man of today is the one teaching and practicing humane kindness, for the day of the warrior and fighter is over, for the world has not progressed un- der animosity. For the sole aim under that leader- ship was to exterminate all who did not believe as they did, instead of living the examplary life that would prove that it was the only way for the good of all. The Birds. The English sparrow has many enemies and it seems at times as if his nationality has much to do with his abuse. I have become well acquainted with the little fellow and find that he makes a very 160 THE GIFT OF HEALING. affectionate pet and will follow you all over the house. If you will study his habits, watch him in the fall down in the grass, eating weed seeds and in- sects and their eggs ; if the seeds are not allowed to grow, we will not have so many weeds if the spar- rows multiply too fast do not kill them, but place convenient nesting places for them and allow them to raise their young only once a year, remove all eggs but do not disturb the nest. The Agricultural Department in their article on helpful birds include the crow. This the Author discovered for herself on her "Farmstead," in put- ting in corn for seed she ordered corn scattered above ground for the crows, so they would not dis- turb the seed that was planted, and they did not touch that left on the surface. They nested in a clump of trees along the fence at the end of the farm and I watched a mother crow teaching her five "babies" to fly. The fifth one was smaller and weaker than the rest, he being five days younger and the mother bird flew on ahead leading them and casting her eye backward saw that the little fel- low was flying lower and lower, not being able to keep up with the rest, and she would dive down- ward and come up under the "weak baby" take him on her back and toss him high in the air. She con- tinued to do this until they were out of sight, and I thought how much love and care she showed for her baby. Could any mother do more for her child? And this bird has been cruelly treated when she has been trying to save the farmers' crops by eating up the insects, and if she eat a little grain with it she more than offsets this by doing good. 161 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Flies. Flies were created to purify the air, and are found j wherever there is filth, and are fulfilling their part, I in being there, as they eat the germs created by the -Refuse. Do not allow your children to kill them but teach them to keep the place clean so the flies will not be obliged to destroy the germs caused by their neglect, for they collect wherever there is dirt. Do not permit them to kill anything. The Prophecy of Isaiah. Chapter 2, 6. "I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day or night; ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence." 7. "And give him no rest till he establish and till he make Jerusalem a praise on the earth." 11. "Behold, the Lord hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, say ye unto the daughter of Zion, Behold thy salvation cometh ; behold, his reward is with him and his work before him. 12. "And they shall call them, the holy people, the redeemed of the Lord ; and thou shalt be called, sought out, a city not forsaken." Chapter 65, 19. "And I will rejoice in Jerusalem, and joy in my people and the voice of weeping shall no more be heard. 25. "The wolf and the lamb shall feed together and the lion shall eat straw like the bullock ; and dust shall be the serpents' meat. They shall not 162 THE GIFT OF HEALING. hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord." This last verse is what we who love all of God's creatures desire the most, "they shall not be hurt nor destroyed," and as the first part of "Isaiah's" prophecy is about to be fulfilled, I have no doubt that the twenty-fifth verse will also be fulfilled, for at last in this twentieth century, one has made the attempt to restore the city of Jerusalem, and under his untiring perseverance, the desolation of Jerusa- lem will disappear, for a son of Israel from America has undertaken the task to restore the Holy City. We gather from "Isaiah" that when a prophecy has come to pass, that has proved it is of the Lord,, and this prophecy has certainly come to pass, for Jerusalem is being restored at the present time. I give a poem which expresses Christ's love, for Jerusalem. Fallen is the Throne. By D. B. Towner. "Lord, thou didst love Jerusalem, Once she was all thine own ; Her love thy fairest heritage, Her power thy glory's throne, "Till evil came and blighted Thy long-loved olive tree, And Salem's shrines were lighted For other gods than thee. 163 THE GIFT OF HEALING. Then sank the star of Solima, Then passed her glory's day, Like heath that in the wilderness The wild wind whirls away. Silent and waste her bowers, Where once they mighty trod, And sunk those guilty towers, Where Baal reigned as God. Go, saith the Lord, O Jerusalem, Steep in her blood your swords, And raze to earth her battlements, For they are not the Lord's. Fallen is thy throne, O Jerusalem, Silence is o'er thy plains. Thy dwellings all lie desolate, Thy children weep in chains. Where are the dews that fed thee On Elim's barren shore? That fire from heaven which led thee, Now lights thy path no more." It will probably take many years to rebuild Jeru- salem, as there is no water supply, no business and a very illiterate population, and much will be needed to make the necessary improvements. The first thing to be done is to supply water, and that is a great expense. I am told that there are plans to build a trolley car line at the present time. With 164 THE GIFT OF HEALING. that and the automobile to encourage tourists, per- haps the money may be supplied to rebuild. "Isaiah" also prophesied the second coming of Christ, and as the desolation he prophesied for Je- rusalem has come true, also after many years the re- building, we can have no doubt the rest will come true and that the gift of prophecy is true. But do not accept any man's word that he is the Saviour until you see Christ coming out of the heav- ens as he has told us, "preceded by a Host of An- gels, with a blare of trumpets and Christ himself floating on a white cloud coming out of the heav- ens." Then will the prophecy be fulfilled and the full truth of prophecy and spirit return be estab- lished. Amen. 165 THE GIFT OF HEALING. WALKING WITH CHRIST. I have studied the Bible so much, so as to be able to give you proof of the spiritual side of life, that when I awake in the morning, I feel that I have been with Christ and the apostles, and that I have witnessed the devotion that He has for His apostles, and that I have followed them through all their good works in trying to make every one ac- knowledge God as the ruler of the world. To you who doubt, the day will come when you will be compelled to recognize His power, and that is when you are forced to watch one you love en- during the agony of death, then you will feel how powerless you are to alleviate one moment's suf- fering, and that you must yield to the overpower- ing force that rules the universe, and that is God. I have been through all this, I have watched my nearest and dearest sinking into death's embrace, and have felt that I would gladly lay down my own life to save them, but it could not be, and I realized how utterly useless it was to try to change fate, that the force back of all this sorrow was. proving to me as it does to< each one individually, that we must admit that no matter how great our strength or power in this world, that back of it all is the God who brings us to recognize Him through the 166 THE GIFT OF HEALING. refining process of sorrow. I am always indignant with anyone who says we suffer for our sins or the sins of our parents. They have taken this un- just idea from the saying in the Old Testament that the sins of the parents shall be inflicted on the chil- dren even unto the third and fourth generation, this simply refers to a certain disease and means contagion, the same as a medical book refers to the subject. It does not mean that all sins are the cause of our sufferings, for animals suffer from most of the diseases that human beings do, and they are not conscious of sin, in any way, and are not to blame in any way for their suffering. It seems to be the law of nature to suffer in order to pro- gress, and the animal must suffer when the spirit separates from the body the same as the human does, and it is suffering that aids in the progres- sion of the spirit. I have held a pet bird in my hand and watched it die, and have wished that I could endure its suf- ferings, and I have suffered with the little creature until the tears rolled down my cheek, and I have thought if this power were only something I could battle with I would fight it until I gave up my life, but with all my grit and energy to battle with, there is nothing but a wall of silence to meet it and that is God, and then I know that I am as nothing in His hands, and that I am here simply to do His will, and that I am powerless. God, what a God ! in; THE GIFT OF HEALING. SPIRIT RETURN Canonization of Saints It is a well known fact that the spirit of Canon- ized Saints must perform several wonderful mira- cles before they are canonized by the Church. This is of course spirit return acknowledged by the Church. There are many spirits who are saints who are not canonized, for they walked in the ordinary paths of life when on earth. These are instructors in spirit life and return to assist those on earth who are willing to receive them. If you lay aside all spite and envy and be the sacrificing self that Jesus was, and say as St. Peter did, "I have nothing to give but I will help you," in time you will receive the Illumination of seeing and hearing. Many people who deride spirit return say, "Why does not this gift come to me as a proof of spirit return?" Do you think that Christ will humble himself to come to a mortal like you, when he refused to give proof to those who crucified him, saying, "Why do you not save yourself?" Some clergymen say they have investigated spir- it return and have found no proof. This is because 168 THE GIFT OF HEALING. they doubt and have not received the Holy Ghost. They are false prophets. Christ has said, "Let him who hath eyes see, and he who hath ears hear." We who have our spiritual eyes opened know that the Lord advises us through his instructive spirit band. He has said, ask and ye shall receive. If you ask and go to him in the humiliation of spirit and of faith you will receive, but Jesus the Man who made the sacrifice on the cross, will not hum- ble himself to anyone for he represents the creator. And you who doubt the communion of spirits doubt His teachings for he has made them very plain. One can believe in spirit return and belong to any religious organization, for any real spiritualist loves anyone who believes in Jesus Christ. Clergy- men who have not received the Holy Ghost are disciples only. The apostles can forgive sins and heal and bind or loose in heaven, for they are prophets of the Holy Ghost and Christ has entered into them. The Message. I have given you the message as it was given to me, and it is "His old message" to the world, the one of humane kindness, and brotherly love. That he lived this great love unto the last is proven by His prayer, "Forgive them Father, they know not what they do." "And He was numbered with the transgressors."
