Together With a LIST or THE MEMBERS IS69-I903 Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 1903 Charter and By-Laws of The Historical Society of Dauphin County, Pennsylvania together with A List of the Members 1869-1903 1903 Harrisburg, PES'NSYLVANIA Historical Note On the evening of May lo, 1869, several gentlemen met and agreed to issue a call for a more general meeting of those interested in the formation of a local Historical Society. In pursuance of this action a meeting was held on the 13th. It was determined to organize a society: a committee was appointed to draft a Constitution, which was adopted, substantially as presented, in the following June. Ap- plication was made to the Commissioners of Dauphin County for a room in the Court House. This request was granted: the Society fitted thf^ room opposite the present City Treasurer's officewith the necessary furniture and held all its meetings in it until 1895. Its collections of MSS, books and newspaper files grew so rapidly and were of so much value, that a Charter* of incorporation was applied for, and was granted by the Court, January 21, 1870, to "THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF DAUPHIN COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA". In May, 1895, the large room at the north west corner of the third floor of the Court House Annex was generously fitted up in a handsome and commodious manner by the County Commissioners for the use of the Society, thereby enabling a much better arrangement and display of the valuable collections to be made. •see Charter Book, Vol. I, p 288, in Recorder's Office at Harrisburg.
