V^^ ^— nni^ 2804 I X INTRODUCTORY X f * 'f * * * % N August, 18^8, a number of prominent citizens of Hartford and the State of Connecticut formed an organization named Tlie Putnam Plialanx. They adopted the uniform of Washington's Army and the Drill of 1776. The first major was Horace Goodwin. In October, 1859, The Putnam Phalanx visited Charlestown, Bunker Hill, Boston, and Providence, and were handsomely entertained in each city. Many places of note have been visited since, among them Richmond, Va., Newburgh, N. Y., Washington, D. C, Mount Vernon, Md., Niagara Falls, N. Y., Albany, N. Y., Newport, R. !., Block Island, etc. The Phalanx participated in the centennial of Concord, Bunker Hill, Philadelphia, Bennington, Stony Pomt, Portsmouth, and Greenwich. It also visited Putnam's grave, and took part in dedicating the Putnam statue in Bushnell Park, Hartford, and the monument erected to Putnam's memory in Brooklyn, Conn., which work of art and recognition was conceived and perfected by The Putnam Phalanx. Every year The Phalanx makes a pleasure trip to some place of interest. Perhaps the most memorable trip is that of October 9th to i6th, 1897, to the centennial at Nashville, Tenn. A Photographic Section composed a part of the party, and the results of its labors are permanently preserved in this book. It is hoped that this souvenir will prove a pleasant reminder of a very enjoyable trip. The com- mittee hereby acknowledges its indebtedness to The Cincinnati Camera Club for valuable courtesies extended. It should be remembered that this book is in no sense intended as a history of the delightful experiences of the Nashville Excursion. It is published to recall the beautiful sights of this trip from an artistic standpoint ; for the "word pictures," the committee refers you to the Phalanx historian. The work of the committee was arduous and responsible, and as it was entirely voluntary on their part and they received no remuneration, they do not feel called upon to offer any apologies. It is a new feature to make a souvenir book of a trip, and we believe this initial effort to preserve in permanent form the beauties of so extended and so delightful an excursion will prove a source of pleasure for years to come. From an artistic standpoint, the book is claimed to be a success. The edition is limited to one hundred copies, and the»full list of excursionists is herewith submitted. E. M. HUNTSINGER, i H. B.
