T h e late Eruption of Mount- Ve-
fuvius was of fo fmgular a na-
ture , fo very violent , and alar-
ming , that it necefl'arily at-
trafled the attention of every one , not
only in its’ immediate Neighbourhood (a)
but for many miles arround , and confe-
quently feveral slight defcriptions of it ha-
ve been already handed about , and fome
( as I am informed ) more accurate, and
circumftantial are preparing for the Prefs.
That , on which the Abbot Bottis is
aftually employ’d by command of His Si-
cilian Majesty , will undoubtedly be exe-
cuted with the fame accuracy , truth , and
precifion , as have render’d that Author’s
former Publications upon the Subject of
Mount- Vefuvius fo univerfally , and defer-
vedly efteem’d .

Such a Publication , executed with ma-
gnificence in the Royal printing Office ,
may perhaps , render every other account
of the late Eruption fuperfluous , neverthe-
lefs I shou’d think myfelf in fome degree
guilty of a neglect towards the Royal So-
ciety , who have done fb much honor to
my former communications , if I did not,
through the refpc6table canal of it’s wor-
thy Prefident, and my good friend , fimply
relate to them fuch remarkable circum fiances,
as attended the late tremendous Explofions
of Mount Vefuvius , and , as either came
immediatly under my Own infpeftion , or
have been related to me by fiich good
Authority , as can not be call’d in quefiion.

(a) The Inhabitants of this greaf City in general give
fo little attention to Mount-Veluvius , tho ia full view
of the greatefl: part of it , that j am well convinced , many
of it’s Eruptions pafs totally unnoticed by at leaft two
thirds of them.

L a dernlere Eruption du Vefuve à
été ft finguliere , ft violente , &
accompagnée de tant de circonjîan-
ces alarmantes ^ qu Elle attira /’ at~
tention non feulement de tous ceux , qui fe
trouvèrent dans fon Vuijinage , mats encore
des habitants , qui etoient a une afsés grande
di fiance du Volcan Ça). On a déjà pulJié quel-
ques defcriptions imparfaites de ce Phenomene^
Ù' /’ on dit , qu on en imprime d ’ autres en-
core plus exatîes , Ô* plus détaillées ; Celle
que compofe f Abbé de Bottis par ordre de
Sa MAJESTE Sicilienne fera furement faite avec
VexaBitude , la precijion , Ô* la vérité , qui
dijiinguent les Ouvrages , que nous a déjà don-
né Jur le Vefuve cet Auteur Ji univerjelle-
ment ejiimé du public .

Un tel Ouvrage exécuté avec magnifcence a
/’ Imprimerie Royale rendra peut être Juper-
flue toute autre Relation de la derniere Erup-
tion , mais je crotrois manquer en quelque fa-
^on a la Société Royale qui a re^u avec tant
de bonté ce que j' ai eu I honneur de Lui com-
muniquer jujqu a prejent fur ce fujet , fi je
ne Lui faijois pas parvenir par le moyen de
fon digne Prefdent , ô* mon ami , une rela-
tion Jimple des dernieres Explojions du Vefuve j
Je vais donc expojer les circonjiances remar-
quables , que f ai vues de mes yéux , ou que
f ai récuetllies de Ji bonne part , que je ne
f ^aurais douter de leur vérité .

Depuis la grande Eruption de ij 6 'j * dont* pl. vi.
f ai eu P honneur de donner une relation de-
taillée a la Société Royale le Vefuve ti a ja-
mais été fans fumeé , ni plujieurs mois de jui-
te fans jetter des fcories enflammées y ces Jym-
ptomes s augmentant a un certain degré ont
été ordinairement fuivis dt un Torrent de La-
ve liquide , Ù" ces Laves ( excepté celle deP
Eruption du 1777 * ) fortirent de la même* V\.L 1.
Bouche , (s’ coulèrent a peu près dans la même 5 * ^
direSlion , que celle de P Eruption fameufe de

ij 6 j.

Depuis cette eruption remarquable on en
compte neufs autres parmi les quelles ,
quelques unes ont été ajfes fortes . Je nai ja-
mais manqué cP examiner les Laves qui ont
accofnpagnées ces éruptions pendant qu elles
étaient dans leur plus grande force , Ù* lorfque
la montagne était calmée je les ai e^uore revues
avec foin , de même que le cratere du Volcan (o').

Je répéterai ce qui a été déjà dit dans
mes Lettres precedentes fur ce Jujet , Ji je
rapportais les remarques que J^ai faite dans
ces dijferentes expeditions . Les Laves en dé-
bordant le cratere , ou fartant du Cône du Vol-
can ont formé confiamment des canaux aujji
réguliers ^ que / ils avaient été taillés par Part
fur la partie efcarpeé de la montagne ,
pendant qu elles étoient dans un état de fu-
Jion parfaite elles ont fuivi leur route dans
ces canaux , qui étoient quelquefois remplis
jujqu au bord ^ Ù" dP autres fois un peu moins
jelon la quantité de matière en mouvement .

^yant examiné ces canaux apres une éruption^
j ai trouvé , qù en general ils étoient larges
de cinque a fix pieds , Ô* profonds dP environs
fept a huit y ils étoiont fouvent dérobés a la
vue par des fcories qui les cachoient fous une
croûte epaifse ^ (S" la Lave ayant fait quel-
ques pas dans ces chemins couverts reparoijfoit
de nouveau dans un ht ouvert • -

Since tKe great Eruption of 17^7 of
wich I had the honor of giving a parti-
cular account to the Royal Society , Ve-
fuvius has never been free from fmoke , nor
ever many months without throwing up
red hot Scoriæ , which increafing to a
certain degree was ufually follow’d by a
current of liquid Lava, and except in the
Eruption of 1777, thofe Lava’s broke out
nearly from the fame fpot , and ran much
in the fame direftion , as that of the fa-
mous Eruption of tySy,

No lefs than nine fuch Eruptions arc
recorded here fince the great one above
mention’d , and fome of them were conli-
derable , I never fail’d vifiting thofe Lava’s,
whilft they were in full force , and as con-
ftantly examined them , and the crater of
the Volcano after the ceafing of each E-
ruption (a ) .

It wou’d be but a repetition of what
has been defcribed in my former letters on
this fubjefl , were I to relate my remarks
on thofe different Expeditions . The Lava’s,
when they either boil’d over the Crater ,
or broke out from the Conical part of the
Volcano , conftantly formed channels , as
regular , as if they had been cut by art ,
down the fteep part of the mountain, and
whilft in a Rate of perfed fufion , conti-
nued their courfe in thofe channels , which
were fome times full to the brim , and at
other times more , or lefs fo , according to
the quantity of matter in motion . Thefe
channels upon examination after an erup-
tion I have found to be in general from
two to five , or fix foet wide , and feven,
or eight feet deep * They were often hid
from the fight by a quantity of Scoriæ ,
that had formed a cruft over them , and
the Lava having been convey’d in a cover’d
Way for fome yards , came out fresh again
into an Open Channel .

(a) The laft vifit to the crater of Vefuvius, which was
în the month of May 1779 , was my 58*^- , and to be
fure I have been four times as often on parts of the moun-
tain without climbing to it’s fummit , and , after all ,
am not ashamed to own , that I comprehend very little
of the wonders I have feen on this great laboratory of na-
ture , yet there bave been Naturalifts , of fuch a wonderfull
penetrating genius , as to have thought themfelves fuffi-
ciently qualified to account for every Phenomenon of Ve-
fuvius , after having , litterarly fpeaking , given the Vol-
cano, un coup d’oeil.

After an Eruption I have walked in fe-
me of thofe fubterraneous , or cover’d gal-
leries, which were exceedingly curious ;
the fides , top , and bottom being worn
perfectly fmooth , and even in moft parts,
by the violence of the currents of the red
hot Lava’s , which they had convey’d for
many, weeks fucceflively ; in others , the
lava had incrufted the fides of thofe chan-
nels with fome very extraordinary Scoriae
beautifully ramified ; (a) white faits , in the
form of dropping ftalaétires , were alfo at-
tach’d to many parts of the ceiling of tho-
fe cover’d galleries.* It is imagined here ,
that the faits of Vefuvius are chiefly am-
moniac , tho often tinged with green , deep,
or pale yellow, by the vapour of various
minerals .

In the month of May laft , there was
a confiderable Eruption of Mount Vefuvius,
when I pafled a night on the mountain in the
company of one of my country men as eager
as myfeif in the purfuit of this branch of na-
tural Hiflory (b) . We faw the operation of
the Lava in the channels as above mention’d,
in the greateft perfeftion but it was indeed
owing to our perfeverance , and fome de-
gree of refolution . After the Lava had
quitted it’s regular channels , it fpread it-
felf in the Valley , and being loaded with
Scoriae , ran gently on , like a river that
had been frozen , and had malTes of ice
floating on it ; the wind changing , when
we were dole to this gentle Ilream of La-
va , which might be about fifty or fixty
feet in breadth , incommoded us fb much
with it’s heat and fmoke , that we muft
have returned without having fatisfied our
curiofity , had not our Guide fc) propofed
the expedient of walking a crofs it , which,
to our aftonishment , he inftantly put in
execution , and with fo little difficulty ,
that we fellow’d him without hefitation ,
having felt no other inconveniency than
what proceeded from the violence of the

heat on our legs, and feet ; the cruft of

vraiement fmgulier, he deffus , les cotés , Ô*
le fond fe trouvoient ordinairement fort unisy
(y prefque polies par le frottement violent
des courants des Laves en fufion , qui avai-
ent coules dans P ejpace de plujleurs femai-
nés de fuite . Les parois de quelques autres de
ces canaux préfentoient de très belles feories
fmgulierement incrujiées (a) . /’ ai remarqué
auffi des crijlaux de fel en forme de flala-
Bite qui pendaient au plafond de ces galeries
couvertes . On croit ici , que les fel s du Ve-
fuve font principalement ammoniaques , quoi-
quon les voit fouvent dt une couleur verte ,
(s’ d un jaune plus , ou moins foncé par les
vapeurs de plujieurs minéraux .

^u mois de mai dernier tl y eut une eru-
ption conftderable au Vefuve'^ Je pafai alors
une nuit fur la montagne accompagné d un
de mes compatriotes , qui e/l auff curieux que
moi de cette partie de P Hijloire naturelle (^).
Nous vîmes très diJlinEîcment la Lave couler
dans les canaux de la maniéré que Je viens
d expofer , mais pour y reufftr il nous fallut
de la confiance , & mime un peu de courage,
jiprés que la Lave eut quitté fes canaux , ou
elle marchait avec une forte de régularité elle
fe répandit dans le Vallon , & fe trouvait

chargée de Scories ; elle coula doucement , com-
me une riviere qui degele , Ô* fur la quelle
fiotteroient des gros glanons le vent ayant chan-
gé dans le moment , que nous nous trouvâmes d
coté de cette Lave , qui coulait très lentement^
(s’ qui était large d environ 50 ou 60 pieds ^
la chaleur^ (S’ la fumée nous incommodèrent
tellement , que nous aurions été force%^ de re-
tourner fur nos pas , fans avoir fatisfait nô-
tre curiojité , Ji notre Guide (r) ne nous eut
proposé de pajfer avec vitejfe Jur la Lave mê-
me ^ ce qu il exécuta tout de fuite a nôtre
grand étonnement , (s avec Ji peu de difficul-
té , que nous le fuivimes fans heftter ; cette
traversée fe fît fans accident ,* nous eûmes feu-
lement une chaleur exceffive au pieds , (s au

the Lava, was fo tough; befides being loa-
ded with cinders and Scoriæ , that our
weight made not the Jeaft impreffion on it,
and its motion was fo slow, that we we-
re not in any danger of loofing our ba-
lance , and falling on it, however this ex-
periment shou’d not be tried except in
cafes of real neceffity , and I mention it
with no other view, than to point out a
poflibility of efcaping, shoud any one he-
reafter, upon fuch an Expedition as ours,
have the misfortune to be inclofed between
two currents of Lava . Having thus got
rid of the trouble fome heat, and fmoke ,
we coafted the river of Lava , and ifs
channels up to ifs very fource, within a
quarter of a mile of the crater . The li-
quid , and red hot matter bubbled up vio-
lently with a hiffing and crackling noi-
fe , like that which attends the playing
off of an Artificial firework , and by the
continual fplashing up of the vitrified mat-
ter , a kind of arch , or dome , was for-
med over the crevice , from whence the
Lava iffued ; it was cracked in many parts,
and appeard red hot within , like an hea-
ted oven; this hollow’d hillock might be
about 1 5 feet high , and the Lava , that
ran from under it , was received into a
regular channel , raifed upon a fort of wall
of Scoriæ , and cinders , almofl perpendi-
cularly, of about the hight of eight , or ten
feet , refembling much an ancient acqueduft.

We then went up to the crater of
the Volcano , in which we found , as
ufual , a little mountain , throwing Sco-
riæ , and red hot matter with loud explo-
fions , but the fmoke, and fincll offulphur
was fo intollerable , that we were under
the neceffity of quitting that curious fpot
with the utmoft precipitation . In another
of my excurfions to Mount Vefuvius laft
year, I picked up fome fragments of lar-
ge , and regular criflals of clofe grain’d La-
va , or Bafalt , the diameter of which ,
when the Prisms were compleat , may ha-
ve been 8 , or p inches ; as Vefuvius does
not exhibit any lava’s regularly criflalized,
and forming what are vulgarly call’d Giants
Caufe-ways, ( except a Lava that ran in-
to the Sea near Torre del Greco in «^31.

celle (f un four chauffé ; Ce monticule creux
en dedans pouvait avoir environ pieds
de hauteur , (s la Lave , qui s en échappoit
etoit re^ue dans un canal taillé d* une manié-
ré reguliere , (s élevé prefque perpendiculaire-
ment fur une efpecée de muraille de feories ,
(s' de cendres , qui etoit de la hauteur a
peu prés de % ou 10 pieds , (S qui avoit beau-
coup /’ air J un ancien acqueduc .

Mous grimpâmes alors jufqu au cratere du
Volcan dans le quel nous trouvâmes a /’ ordinai-
re un monticule , qui vomijfoit des f cônes , (S’
de la matière enflammée avec qrand bruit
mais la fumee (s f odeur de fouffre ét oient fi
tnfupportable que nous fumes obliges de quitter
cet endroit curieux avec la plus qrande preci-
pitation , Dans un autre votaqe que je fis fur

After this slight sketch of the moft re-'
markable events on Vefuvius fince the year
17 ^ 7 . which I flatter myfelf will not be
unacceptable , as it may ferve to conneft
what I am going to relate with what has
already been communicated to the Society
in my former letters on the fame fubje£t,

I come to the account of the late erup-
tion, which affords indeed ample matter
for curious fpeculation .

As many Poetical defcriptions of this
eruption will not be wanting , I shall
confine mine to Ample matter of fad , in
plain profe , and endeavor to convey to
you , Sir , as clearly , and diftindly , as
I am able , W'hat I law myfelf , and the
impreflion it made upon me at the time ,
without aiming in the leafl: at a flowery
ftile .

The ufual fymptoms of an approaching
eruption , fuch as rumbling noifes , and
explofions within the bowells. of the Vol-
cano , a quantity of fmoke iffuing with
force from it’s crater , accompanied at ti-
mes with an emiflion of red hot Scoriae ,
and ashes , were manifeft more , or lefs ,
during the whole month of July, and to-
wards the end of the month , thofe fym-
ptoms were increafed to fuch a degree ,
as to exhibit in the night time the moft
beautifull fireworks , that can be imagined.

Thefe kind of throws of red hot Sco-
riae , and other Volcanik matter , which at
nig ht are fo bright , and luminous , appear;
in broad daj/light like fo many black fpots
in the midft of the white fmoke , and it
is this circumftance, that occafions the vul-
gar

on the cone of Vefuvius had been evidently thrown out
of it’s crater, may not Lava be more fubje£l to criftalize
within the bowells of a Volcano , than after it’s emiflion,
and having been expofed to the open air ? and may not

nuclei of Volcanik Mountains , whofe lighter , and lefs
folid parts may have been worn away by the hand of
time? Monsr Faujas de St Fond in his curious book late-

example of Bafalt columns that are placed deep within tha

On remarqua plus ou moins dans le courant
de Juillet des bruits fouterrains , des explnjions
dans F intérieur du Volcan^ (D‘ une fumée epaijje^
qui fortoit avec force du cratere accompagnée de
tems en tems de dejeSlions de cendres , de
Scories enjîam7nées ^ fymptomes ordinaires d'une
eruptio7% prochaine y vers la fin du quel mois
ces fymptomes augmentèrent ^ é3 le Vefuve of-
voit tous les foirs des gira?7doles de feu , qui

in the day time *

On Thursday the 5 *^’ of Auguft laft ,
about two O’clock in the afternoon , I per-
ceiv’d from my Villa at Paufilipo in the
Bay of Naples , from whence I have a
fullview of Vcfuvius ( which is juft op-
pofite, and at the diftance of about 6 mi-
les in a dire£l line from it ) that the Vol-
cano was in a moft violent agitation ; a
white , and fulphurious fmoke iftued con-
tinually , and impetuously from it’s crater,
one puff impelling another and by an ac-
cumulation of thofe clouds of ftnoke , re-
fembling bales of the whiteft cotton, fuch
a mafs of them was foon piled over the
top of the Volcano, as exceeded the height,
and fize of the Mountain itfelf , at leaft
four times . In the midft of this very ,
white fmoke, an immenfe quantity of fto-
nes. Scoriae , and ashes were shot up to
a Wonderfull height , certainly not lefs
than two thoufand feet : I could alfo per^
ceive by the help of one of Ramsden’s
moft excellent refrafling Telefcopes , at
times , a quantity of liquid Lava feeming-
ly very weighty , juft heaved up high e-
nough to clear the rim of the crater , and
then take it’s courfe impetuously down the
fteep fide of Vefuvius , oppofite to Somma:
Soon after a Lava broke out on the fame
fide from about the middle of the conical
part of the Volcano , and having ran with
violence Lome hours , ceafed fuddenly , juft
before it had arrived at the cultivated
parts of the Mountain above Portici , near
four miles from the fpot , where it if>
fued .

During this day’s eruption , as I have
been credibly informed ft nee , the heat was
intollerable at the Towns of Somma ,
and Ottaiano , and was likewife fenfibly
felt at Palma , and Lauro , which are much
farther from Vefuvius than the former ;
minute ashes , of a reddish hue , fell fo
thick at Somma , and Ottaiano , that they
darken’d the air in fuch a manner , as that,
objefts cou’d not be diftinguished at the
diftance of ten foet ; long filaments of a
vitrified matter like (pun glafs were mixed,

les d un cotton très blanc , formèrent bien
tôt au dejfus de la pointe du Volcan une maff
fe Ji enorme , qu elle étoit au moins 4 fois
plus haute , 6* grande que la Montagne y
une quantité immenfe de pierres , de fcories ,
Ô* de cendres étoit lancées a une hauteur qui
n et oit certainement pas moindre de deux mille

lent Telefcope de refraSîion de Pamfden qu une
groffe majfe de Lave liquide^ qui de plus pa-
roiffoit très pefante fe foulevoit a une hauteur
pour franchir le bord du cratere ,
qu apres avoir débordé , elle couloit avec im-
petuoftté en bas fur les flancs efearpés du Ve*
fuye vis a vis de la Montagne de Somma ^
bientôt une Lave / échappa du milieu de la
partie conique du Volcan , 6* fe répandit du
même côte , ^Ayant coulée avec force quelques
heures , elle ceffa tout d un coup , / arrê-

ta a une petite diftance des terreins cultivés
de la Montagne , au deffus de Portici ^ & a
peu près a quatre milles de la bouche d ou
elle étoit fortié *

Pendant /’ eruption de ce jour ( felons les
details^ que ;’ ai enfuite re^u de bonne partj
la chaleur étoit exceffive dans les Villes de
Somma , éy dOttaiano , on en étoit même incom-
mode a Palma ^ (y a Lauro beaucoup ^ qui font
plus éloignées du Vefuve. Des cendres fines ^ Ô*
rougeâtres tombèrent en Ji grande abondance fur
Somma ^ éy Ottaiano , 6’ le Ciel en étoit tel-
lement obfcurci , qu on ne pouvoit dijlinguer
les objeSis a dix pieds de diftance » Des longs
filaments d une matière vitrifiée femblable a
du verre filé fe trouvaient mêlés avec ces cen-
dres

ral birds in cages were fuffocated , the lea-
ves of the trees in the neighbourhood of
Somma , and Ottaiano were cover’d with
white faits very corrofive •

Abouth two a clock in the afternoon an
extraordinary globe of fmoke of a very
great Diameter was diftinftly perceived by
many of the inhabitants of Portici to if-
fue from the crater of Vefuvius , and pro-
ceed haftily towards the Mountain of Som-
ma , againfl: which it ftruck , and difper-
fed it felf having left a train of white
fmoke , marking the courfe it had taken ;
this train I perceiv’d plainly from my Vil-
la , as it lafted fome minutes , but 1 did
not fee the Globe itfelf.

A poor labourer who whas making fa-
gots on the Mountain of Somma lolt his
life~at this time, and his body not having
been found , it is fuppofed , that futfocated
by the fmoke, he muft have fall’n into
the valley from the craggy Rocks , on
which he was at work , and been cover’d
by the current of Lava that took it’s cour-
fe through that valley foon after . An afs
that was waiting for it’s mader in the val-
ley left it very judiciously , as foon as
the Mountain became violent , and arriving
fafe home gave the firft alarm to this poor
man’s family.

It was generally remarked , that the ex-
plofions of the Volcano were attended with
more noife during this day’s eruption ,
than in any of the fucceeding ones , when,
moft probably , the mourh of Vefuvius was
widen’d , and the volcanick matter had a
freer palTage . It is certain however , that
the great eruption of lydy ( which in

ce blanchâtre qui marquait exaBement le che-
min qu il avoit fait ; De ma maijon de cam-
pagne f ai très bien remarqué cette trace ,
car elle dura quelques minutes , mais je n ai
pas vu le globe qui la procéda .

Un pauvre homme occupé a faire des fagots
fur la Montagne de Somma perdit la vie dans
ce moment , (S’ comme on n a pas trouvé fon
cadavre , il e/l a fuppofer , que ce malheureux^
après avoir été fujfoqué par la fumée , ejl tombé
dans le vallon du haut des rochers ejearpés ^ ou
il travailloit , Ô* qù il a été enfeveli par la
Lave , qui coula bientôt dans ce vallon . Un
ane , qui attendait foîi maitre dans le vallon^
quitta très judicieujement cet endroit dangereux
dés que les expulfwns de la Montagne commen-
cèrent , Ô* f’ étant fauvé dans fon ecuri'è il
donna la premiere alarme a la famille du pau-
vre homme , qui venait de périr.

On a remarqué généralement ^ que les expulfons
du Volcan etoient plus fortes pendant C eruption
de ce jour , que celles des jours fuivants^ pareeque
vraijemblablement la bouche du Vefuve s étant
élargi la matière volcanique aura eu le paf-
fage plus libre . Il ejl certain pourtant , que
la grande eruption de ij6j ( la quelle a tout
autre egard était modérée Ù’ legere en compa-

matières vitrifiées en forme d* herbes , ou de pailles trouvées
dans le vdtfinage du Vefuv^ pendant une éruption df cette
montagne f année 1724.

pared to the late violent eruption ) occa-
fion’d much greater concuflions in the air,
by it’s louder explofions .

Friday Auguft the 6***' the fermentation
in the Mountain was lefs violent , but a-
bout noon there was a loud report , at
which time it was fuppofed that a por-
tion of the little Mountain within the cra-
ter had fall’n in : at night the throws from
the crater increafed , and proceeded evident-
ly from two feperate mouths, wich, emit-
ting red hot Scoriæ in different direfHons,
formed a moft beautifull , and almoft con-
tinued Fire w^^orck .

On faturday Auguft the the Volcano
remain’d much in the fame ftate , but about
12a clock at night it’s fermentation in-
creafed greatly . The fécond fever fit of
the Mountain may be faid to have mani-
fefted itfelf at this time : I’ was watching
it’s motions from the mole of Naples ,
which has a full view of the Volcano , and
had been witnefs to feveral glorious pi£lu-
refque effe£ls produced by the reflexion of
the deep red fire, which iflued from the
crater of Vefuvius , and mounted up in
the midft of the huge clouds , when a
fummer ftorm , call’d here a Tropea ca-
me on fuddenly, and blended it’s heavy
watry clouds with the fulphurious , and
mineral ones, which were already like fo
many other Mountains , piled over the fum-
met of the Volcano ; at this moment a
fountain of fire was shot up to an incre-
dible height , calling fo bright a light ,
that the fmalleft obje 61 s cou’d be clearly
diftinguished , at any place within fix mi-
les or more of Vefuvius .

The black ftormy clouds palTing fwifty
over , and at times , covering the whole ,
or a part of the bright column of fire , at
other thimes clearing away, and giving a
full view of it with the various tints pro-
duced by it’s reverberated light on the whi-
te clouds above, in contrail with the pale
flashes of forked lighte ning , that atten-
ded the Tropea formed fuch a fcene , as
no power of art can ever exprels. That,
which follow’d the next evening , was
furely much more formidable , and alar-
ming , but this was more beautifull , and

mentèrent , on les voyait partir de deux bou-
ches differentes , les quelles vomijf oient des

naient des direSiions diverfes elles formaient
des girandoles de feu continuelles bien faites ,
Ù" de la plus grande beauté .

.Samedi 7 d' Jîout le Volcan fe trouvait a
peu prés dans le même état , mais vers minuit
fa fermentation augmenta conjiderablement .
On pourrait dire , que la fécondé fievre de
la Montagne fe manifejloit alors . f étais au
Molo de Naples d’ ou P on voit parfaite-
ment le Vefuve je faifais mes remarques fur
les moindres details^ & f avais déjà été té-
moin des plufteurs effets très pittorefques pro-
duits par la reflexion du feu cP un rouge fon-
re, qui for toit du cratere du Vefuve , & fe
lançait au milieu des vafles amas de fumée
lorfqù un orage cP été , qù on appelle ici Tro-
pea , / eleva tout d' un coup , & mêla fes
nuages humides ér lourds avec ceux , qu on
voiyoit empreints de foufjre , Ô' d’ autres mi-
néraux , qui étaient déjà comme autant de
Montagnes entajfées les unes .y fur les autres
au dejfus de la pointe la plus haute du Vol-
can , Dans ce moment une fontaine de feu li-
quide s eleva a une hauteur incroyable , la lu-
mière en était fi vive , que par tout a plus
de fix milles du Vefuve on dijîinguoit clai-
rement les moindres objets .

Les nuages noirs de Porage paffant avec viteffe
fur le colonne de feu y (S' quelque fois la cachant
totalement y ou en partie , (S' d'autres la laijfant
voir dans toute fa fplendeury les teintes diffe-
rentes produites par la reflexion de la lumière
fur les nuages blancs , qui étaient dans la re-
gion fuperieure de P air , (s' leur combat a-
vec les éclairs pales , qui accompagnaient la
Tropea formaient tous enfemble une fcene
qu il eji impoffible de peindre . L' eruption du
lendemain au foir fut furement plus formida-
ble y (s* plus alarmante y mais celle ci était d'une
beauté y & (P un fublime que l'imagination mê-

fublime, than even the moft lively imagi-
nation can paint to itfelf. This great ex-
plofion did not laft above 8, or lo minu-
tes after which Vefuvius was totally eclip-
fed by the dark clouds , and there fell a
heavy shower of rain .

Some fcoriæ , and fmall ftones fell at
Ottaiano during this eruption , and fome
of a very great fize in the valley between
Vefuvius, and the Hermitage ; all the in-
habitants of the towns at the foot of the
Volcano were in the greateft alarm , and
preparing to abandon their houfes had
the eruption continued longer .

One of His Sicilian Majesty’s game
keepers , who was out in the fields near
Ottaiano , whilft this combined llorm was
at it’s height was greatly furprifed to find
the drops of rain fcald his face , and hands,
which phenomenon was probably occafion’d
by the clouds having acquired a great de-
gree of heat in palfing through the above-
mention’d column of fire : The King of
Naples did me the honor of informing me
of this curious circumftance.

Sunday Augufl: the 8“* Vefuvius was
quiet till towards 6 *o clock in the eve-
ning, when a great fmoke began to gather
again over it’s crater , and about an hour
after a rumbling fubterraneous noife was
heard in the neighbourhood of the Volca-
no and the ufual throws of red hot ftones,
and fcoriæ began , and increafed every in-
ilant ; I was at this time at Paufilipo in
the company of feveral of my countrymen,
obferving with good telefcopes the curious
phenomena on the crater of Vefuvius ,
which with fuch help , we cou’d diftin-
guish as well , as if we had been adually
feated on the fummit of the Volcano; The
crater feem’d much enlarged by the violen-
ce of laft night’s explofions, and the little
Mountain no longer exifted . At about p ’o
clock there was a loud report , which shook
the houfes at Portici , and it’s neighbour-
hood to fuch a degree as to alarm their
inhabitants, and drive them out into the
ftreets , and as I have fince feen many
windows were broken , and walls crack’d
by the concuflion of the air from that ex-
plofion , tho faintly heard at Naples . In
an inftant a fountain of liquid trafparent

Des feories , & de petites pierres tombèrent
a Ottaiano pendant cette eruption , Ùt quelques
unes extrêmement grojfes dans le vallon entre
le Vejuve ^ V Hermitage , Les habitant des
villes fttuées au pied du Volcan étaient dans
la plus grande alarme , fo préparaient a
abandonee leurs maifons , Ji /’ eruption avait
continué .

Un garde chaffe du Roi , qui fe trouvait
en pleine campagne près dt Ottaiano pendant
que cet orage combiné avec les nuages du Vol-
can était dans fa plus grande force fut très
étonné de fentir^que les goûtes de la pluye lui
bruloient le vifage , les mains , vraifembla-
blement les nuages avaient acquis un extrême
degré de chaleur en pajfant a travers de la
colonne de feu , dont je viens de parler . Sa
M-^JESte' Sicilienne me fit l' honneur de me
racconter ce fait curieux .

Dimanche 8 d’ jiout le Vefuve fut tran-
quil jufque vers les fix heures de P après midij
lorfque une grande fumée s accumula derechef
fur fon cratere Ô* une heure après on entendit
dans le voifinage de la Montagne un bruit
foufterrain , qui fut terrible , les mêmes de-
jeSlions de pierres ^ (3“ de feories enflam-
mées recommencèrent , Ô' augmentèrent a
chaque inftant. Je me trouvais alors a Paufi-
lipo avec plujieurs des mes compatriotes , a
r aide de quelques bons telefcopes nous faifions
enfemble nos obfervations fur les phenomenes
curieux que nous prefentoit la bouche du V ?-
fuve (3" que nous diftinguions auffi bien , que
ji nous eufftons été ajjis fur le fommet du
Volcan . La violence des explofions de la veille
fembloit avoir élargi confiderablement le crate-
re , és' le monticule n exiftoit plus . V trs les
P heures le Vefuve donna un grand coup qui
ébranla tellement les maifons de Portici , Ô* de
fon voijinage , que tous les habitans allarmes
s enfuirent au milieu des rues ^ On m y a mon-
tré depuis des murailles crevafées , & des
vitres , qui avaient été cajfés par la commo-
tion de /’ air au moment de cette explojion quoi
qu a Naples nous ne Feuffions entendus , que

fire began to nfe, and gradually increafing
arrived at fo amazing a height , as to ftri*
ke every one, who beheld it , with the
ifioft awfull aftonishment : I shall fearfely be
credited , when I aflure you , Sir , that
to the beft of my judgement the height
of this ftupendous column of fire cou’d not
be lefs than three times that of Vefuvius
itfelf , which , as you know , rifes perpen-
dicularly , near 3700 feet above the level
of the fea (a) .

Puffs of fmoke as black as can poflibly
be imagined fucceeded one an other ha-
flily , and accompanied the red hot tranf-
parent , and liquid lava interrupting it’s
fplendid brightnefs here , and there by pat-
ches of the darkeft hue ; within thefe puffs
of fmoke at the very moment of their e-
miffion from the crater I cou’d perceive a
bright , but pale eleftrical fire briskly playing
about in zig zag lines (^) . The wind was
S. W. and tho gentle was fufficient to
carry thefe detatched clouds , or puffs of
fmoke out of the column of fire , and a
colleflion of them by degrees formed a
black , and extenfive curtain ( if I many
be allow’d the expreffion ) behind it , in
other parts of the sky it was perfe£lly
clear , and the liars were bright . The fie-
ry fountain , of fo gigantick a lize upon
the dark ground abovemention’d made the
moll glorious contrail imaginable , and the
blaze of it reflefling llrongly on the furfa-
ce of the fea , which wâs at that time
perfedly fmooth , added greatly to this fu-
blime view *

The liquid lava mixed with Hones , and
Scons after having mounted , I verily
beleive , at the leaft ten thoufand feet ,
was partly direded by the wdnd towards
Ottaiano , and partly falling almoft per-
pendicularly Hill red hot , and liquid on
Vefuvius, cover’d it’s whole cone, part of

du cratere f ai remarqué un feu eleSirique ,

fuffijoit pour emporter hors de la colonne de
feu ces boujfées , ou ces efpeces de nuages dé-
tachées , & plujieurs enjemble formèrent peu a
peu derrière elle une efpece de rideau noir ( s il
m ejl permis de me fervir de cette expreffion)

& d ’ une grande etendue ; par tout ailleurs le
Ciel était parfaitement clair, on y voyait
hrtller tes etotles . La colonne enflammée d* un
volume gigantefque fe trouvant fur le fond
obfcur , dont je viens de parler , fai fait con-
trafte le plus admirable, & fa lumière écla-
tante réfléchie fortement fur la furface de la

the Mountain of Somma , and the valley
between them ,

The falling matter being nearly as vi-
vid , and inflamed as that which was con-
tinually iffuing fresh from the crater for-
med with it one compleat body of fire ,
which cou*d not be lefs than two miles ,
and a half in breadth, and of the extraor-
dinary height abovemention’d , calling a
heat to the difiance of at leafi fix miles a-
round it .

The brush wood on the Mountain of
Somma was foon in ablaze, which flame
being of a different tint from the deep red
of the matter thrown out of the Volcano,
and from the filvery blue of the eleftrical
fire fiill added to the contrafi of this
mofi extraordinary fcene .

The black cloud increafing greatly on-
ce bent towards Naples , and feem’d to
. threaten this fair city with fpeedy deflru-
£lion , for it was charged with eleftrical
matter which kept confiantly darting about
it in firong , and bright zig zags , jufi
like thofe defcribed by Pliny the younger
in his letter to Tacitus, and which ac-
companied the great eruption of Vefuvius,
that proved fatal to his uncle {d).

This Volcanick lightening however , as
I particularly remarked , very rarely quit-
ted the cloud , but ufually return’d to the
great column of fire towards the crater of
the Volcano from whence it originally ca-
me Q})'. once, or twice indeed I faw this
lightening ( or ferilli as it is call’d here )
fall on the top of Somma, and fet fire to
fome dry grals , and bushes (c) .

Les bruoffailles fur la Montagne de Somma

Fortunately for us the wind increafing
from the S. W. quarter carried back the
threatening cloud juft as it had reached the
city, and began to occafton great alarm •
All publick diverfions ceafed in an inftant,
and the Theatres being shut , the doors of
the churches were thrown open . Numerous
procédions were formed in the ftreets, and
women, and children with deshiveld heads,
filled the air with their cries , ‘infilling
loudly upon the reliks of S* Januarius being
immediatly oppofed to the fury of the
Mountain; in short the populace of this
great city began to difplay it s ulual extra-
vagant mixture of riot, and bigotry-, and
if fome fpeedy, and well timed precautions
had not been taken , Naples wou’d perhaps
have been in more danger of fuffering from
the irregularities of it’s lower ^clafs of in-
habitants , than from the angry Volcano .

But to return to my fubje^t , after the
column of fire had continued in full force
near half an hour the eruption ceafed all
at once , and Vefuvius remain’d fullen and
filent . After the dazzling light of the fie-
ry Fountain (^) , all feemed dark , and
difmal , except the cone of Vefuvius which
was cover’d with glowing cinders , and fco-
riæ , from under which , at times , here ,
and there , fmall ftreams of liquid lava
cfcaped , and roll’d down the fteep fides
of the Volcano ; this feene put me in mind
of Martial’s defeription of Etna .

In the parts of Naples neareft Vefuvius ,
whilft the eruption lafted a mixed fmell ,
like that of fulphur with the vapours of an
iron foundery was fenfible , but nearer to

the

continued greatly impregnated with eleflicral matter. The
Duke of Cotrofiano a Neapolitan nobleman ( who from
his fuperiour knowledge in experimental Philofophy , and
mechanicks does honor to his country ) told me , that ha-
ving about half an hour after the great eruption had cea-
fed, held a Leyden bottle armed with a pointed wire, out
of his window at Naples, it foon became confiderabl y char-
ged . Whilft the eruption was in force , it’s appearance was
too alarming to allow one to think of fuch experiments.

(a) The light diffufed by this huge column of fire was
fo ftrong , that the moft minute objefts cou’d be difeerned
clearly within the compafs of ten miles , or more round
the Mountain. M' Morris an english Gentleman told me ,
that at Sorrento which is twelve miles from Vefuvius ,
he read the title page of a book by that Volcanick light.

pris de fages precautions^ Naples aurait ^ peut
être foujfert davantage par les extravagances
du bas peuple , que par le colere du V ilcan .

Pour revenir a nôtre fujet la colonne du
feu ayant continué avec la même force prés
d une demi heure , P eruption cejfa tout d un
coup , 6* le Vejuve rejia tranquille . ^prés le
lumière éclatante de la colonne enflammée
tout avait P air f ombre , Ù‘ lugubre , excepte
le cone du Volcan , qui étoit couvert de cen-
dres^ (y de f caries enflammées , du pied des
quelles f’ échappaient de tems en tems de petits
ruijfeaux de lave liquide qui coulaient fur les
flancs efearpés du Volcan , cette feene me rap-
pella la defeription que Martial fait du mont^
Etna .

Dans les endroits de Naples les plus voifins
du Vefuve , on fentit pendant P eruption une
odeur de foujfre unie a celle d une fonderie de
fer ^ plus prés de la Montagne , cette odeur

étoit

treuvoit encore empraint de mattere eleSirtque , le Duc de Co»
tYofiano Seigneur Napolitain ( qui par fes talent fuperieurt
dans la Philofophie naturelle , & dans la Meccanique fait
honneur a la Patrie ) rn a dit , qu environs une demi heure
après ayant prefentè a fa fenêtre a Naples une bouteille de
Leyden armée d'une pointe de fer , cette bouteille fut bientôt
fortement chargée. Pendant que l' eruption eut lieu , l'allarme^
qu elle répandit ne permit pas fans doute , qu on penfat a
de telles experiences.

(a) La lumière produite par cette enorme colonne de feu
étoit fi forte ^ que les plus petits objeBs fe difiinguoient claU
rement dans l' efpace de plus de dix milles a l' entour de la
Montagne. Monfieur Morris gentilhomme .Anglais tn a dit
avoir là avec cette même lumière Volcanique le titre d'un h-
vre a Sorrento ^ qui eji a douze milles du Vefuve.

Thus, Sir, have I endeavor’d to convey
to you at leaft a faint idea oft a Tcene fo
glorious , and fublime , as perhaps may
have never before been view d by human
eye , at leaft in ftich perfeétion .

I am fenfible, from the traces of them
I have obferved in the Volcanick ftrata ,
■which compofe the greateft part of this
country, that there have been many mo-
re confiderable eruptions , than the one
juft deferibed , yet moft probably tho-
fe very violent eruptions muft either ha-
ve been attended with earthquakes , and
other fuch alarming clrcumftances as to
make the beholders lefs attentive to the
beauty of the feenes , fuch phenomena
offer’d than to their own fafety ; or
clouds of fmoke , and ashes , as is ufual-
ly the cafe in all great eruptions , muft
have fo far obfeured the Volcano , as to
exhibit only a confufed mafs of fire , and
fmoke .

Whilft we had been enjoying the ex-
traordinary fight of this gigantick fountain
of liquid fire in perfea fafety , the unfor-
tunate inhabitants of the other fide of the
Mountain of Somma , particularly at Otta-
iano , and Caccia-bella were Involved in
that dark , and footy cloud , which formed
fo proper a back ground to our bright pi-
£lure, and were pelted with ftones , and
feoriæ of lava ; but I shall prefently give
you a particular defcription of their truly
diftrefsfull fituation , juft as I had it from
many of the poor fufferers themfelves , when
I vifited that part of the country a few
days after this eruption .

Monday Auguft the about p o clock
in the morning the fourth fever fit of the
Mountain began to manifeft itfelf by the
ufual fymptoms , fuch , as a fubterraneous
boiling noife, violent explofions of inflamed
matter from the crater of the Volcano ,
accompanied with fmoke , and ashes , which
fymptoms increafed every inftant . The fmo-
ke was of two forts, the one as white ,
as fnow , and the other , as black as jet ,
The white as deferibed in the former part
of this journal roll’d gently mafs over

que f ai remarqué dans les couches des matières
volcaniques dont la plus jfrande partie de ce Pays
ici eft compofée je fuis convaincu cependant , qu
il y en a eu jadis de plus fortes ; mais il efi
probable aujfi , que ces eruptions très violentes^
auront été accompagnées , ou de tremblements de
serre , Ô* d’ autres circonftances alarmantes ,
qui auront rendu les fpeclateurs moins atten-
tifs a la beauté des feenes produites par de
tels phenomemes , qu a leur propre fureté , ou^
que f abondance de la fumée , èr des cendres
^ comme il arrive ordinairement dans toutes les
grandes eruptions ) aura tellement envelloppé
le Volcan , qu on n aura pu diftinguer ', qu u-
ne rnajfe confufe de feu^ 6* de fumée .

Pendant que nous joui jfions fans rien craindre
du fpeSîacle extraordinaire de cette colonne gi-
gantejque de feu liquide les malheureux habit ans
% f autre coté de la Montagne de Somma ,
Ô* principalement ceux d'Ottaiano , Ô* de Cac~
cia bella fe trouvoient au milieu de ce nuage
noir chargé de cendres ^ qui faifoit le meilleur
fond poffible a notre brillant tableau ) & afi
faillis de pierres , & de feories de lave ; mais
je vous donnerai bientôt une relation détaillée
de leur fituation vraiement alarmante . Je ne
vous dirai rien ' qui ne m’ ait été ajfuré par
plufteurs de ces infortunés lorfque { allas les
voir peu de jours après f eruption .

Lunedi 9 . d'Jout vers les 9 . heures du
matin le quatrième accès de fievre de la Mon-
tagne commentait s annoncer par les fymptomes
ordinaires , tels qu un bouillonement fouter-
rainy des explofions violentes de matières en-
flammées du cratere du V jlcan , accompagnées
de fumée 6* de cendres ; ces fymptomes aug-
mentaient chaque infiant • Le fumee etoit^ de
deux efpecés , F une blanche comme la neige ,
r autre noire comme du jdiet ; Les flocons de
la blanche ainji que je f ai dépeinte dans la
premiere partie de ce journal roulaient douce-
^ f> ment

nute ashes shot up with force in the midft
of the white fmoke , which from the mi-
nerals was alfo fbmetimes tinged with yel-
lou blue and green prefently fuch a tre-
mendous mafs of thefe accumulated clouds
flood over Veluvius , as feem’d to threaten
Naples again , and aftually made the Moun-
tain itfelf appear a mole hill .

This days eruption was fimilar to that
of Thurfday lafl , but many degrees more
violent. Some flones were thrown near as
high as thole of lafl night fell on the
Mountain of Somma , and fet fire to the
brush wood, with which it is cover’d ,
but there being little wind , and that We-
flerly , the Volcanick matter rofe, and fell
in a more perpendicular dire£lion , and Ot-
taiano did not fuffer by this day eruption,
but moll of the inhabitants of the towns
on the borders of Vefuvius fled to Naples
alarmed by the tremendous clouds , and the
loud explofions .

We remarked , that feveral very large
flones after having mounted to an immen-
fe height, formed a parabola leaving be-
hind them a trace of white fmoke that
marked their courfe; fome burfl in the air
exaflly like bombs , and others fell into
the valley between Somma , and Vefuvius
without burfling , others again burfl into
a thoufand pieces foon after their emiffion
from the crater , they might very properly
be call’d volcanick bombs .

In the fmoke ifluing from the crater of
Vefuvius we often remarked a fudden brisk,
and quivering motion which feem’d to com-
municate itfelf inflantaneously from one
cloud to an other, and fometimes affe£led
thofe that were very high in the great
mafs above the Volcano j Tho I cou’d not
difcern any ele£lrical fire , yet I make no
doubt but that the effe£l abovemention’d ,
was occafion’d by it, and wou’d have been
yifible in the night time.

Upon the whole this day’s eruption was
very alarming untill the lava broke out

JL eruption de ce jour fut femblable a cel-
le du Jeudi precedent , mais beaucoup plus vio-
lente , ^elques pierres ayant été jettées pref-
que aujfi haut , qu elles avaient été le foir
de la veille tombèrent fur la Montagne de
Somma , (y mirent le feu aux broujf ailles , dont
elle eji couverte , mais le vent étant foible (y
a r Oueji la matière volcanique s elevoit , (y
retombait dans une dtreflton pré f que perpendi-
culaire , (y Ottdtano ne foujfroit point de cette
eruption , Le plus part des habitons des vil- .
les dans les environs du Vefuve fe réfugièrent
cependant a Naples alarmés par ces nuages ter-
ribles ^ (y par les fortes explofions ,

Nous remarquâmes ^ que plufieurs pierres très
grojfes après avoir monté a une hauteur pro-
digieufe décrivaient une parabole^ & laiffoient
dernere elles une trace , ou ligne de fumée
blanche , qui marquait la direélion , qu elles
avaient pris * , Quelques unes crevèrent en '
air exaSiement comme des bombes , Ô* d^ autres
tombèrent dans le vallon entre Somma , ^
U Vefuve fans crever , plufieurs crevèrent
en mille morceaux au moment même de leur
emiffion du cratere . On pourrait très bien
nommer ces efpeces de pierres des bombes vol-
caniques .

Dans la fumee , qui fortoit du cratere du
Vefuve nous remarquâmes fouvent un mouve-
ment de la Vibration momentanée (y très vive^
qui paroiffoit fe comuniquer dans un infiant d'un
nuage a f autre ^ éy même a ceux^ qù on vo-
yait a une très grande hauteur dans P énorme
colonne , qui était au dejfus du Volcan g Quoi-
que je ne mkùffe point apper^u cTun feu eleSiri-
que je crois cependant , que les effets dont
viens de parler ont été caufés par cette
matière , (y que le feu même a dâ être vifit-
ble la nuit.

about 2 o clock , and ran three miles bet-
■ ween the two Mountains we were in con-
tinual apprehenfion of fome fatal event , it
continued to run about three hours, during
which time every other fymptom of the
Mountain fever gradually abated , and at
feven o* clock at night all was calm .

It was univerfally remarked , that the
air this night for many hours after the e-
ruption was filled with meteors , fuch as
are vulgarly called falling ftars , they shot
generally in an horizontal dire£Hon lea-
ving a luminous trace behind them , but
which quickly difappeafd. The night was
remarkably fine, ftar light , and without
a cloud . This kind of eleftrical fire feem’d
to be harmlefs , and never to reach the
ground , whereas that , with which the
black V^olcanick cloud of laft night was
pregnant appear’d mifehevous like the
lightening that attends a fevere thunder
florm ; as we shou’d undoubtedly have ex-
perienced ; had the eruption continued lon-
ger, and the cloud fpread over Naples ;
the fame kind of lightening proved fatal
to feveral people , and did great damage
within the fjjace of many miles round Ve-
fuvius during it’s great eruption of 1^31.,
as is mention’d in one of my former let-
ters on this fubjeft.

During this day’s eruption the relicks of
S'. Januarius were carried in proceffion ,
and expofed to the furious Mountain from
the bridge of the Maddalena a midft a
prodigious concourfe of people who are at
this moment well convinced , that to this
ceremony alone Naples may attribute it’s
happy efcape.

It was from Their Sicilian Majesties
Palace a Paufilipo that I made my obfer-
vation on this day’s eruption , and inthe
prefence of Their Majelties who had been
pleafed to fend for me in the morning as
fbon as the Volcano became turbulent.

Tuefday Auguft the 10“* Vefuvius was
quiet .

Wednefday Auguft the 11“* about 6 , *0
clock in the 'morning the fifth , and laft
fever fit of the Mountain came on , and
gradually increafed . About 1 2. ’o clock it

was

Tout le monde remarqua que le même foir
pendant plufieurs heures après la fin de P e~
ruption P air étoit chargé de météores fem-
blables a ce qù on nomme vulgairement des
Etoiles-tombantes ; Elles partaient pour P or-
dinaire avec une direSiion hori%pntale ^ Ù" laif-
foient derrière elles une trace lumineufe ^ mais
qui difparoijfoit bientôt . La foirée étoit très
belle ^ les étoiles brillantes ^ (S' le Ciel fans
tiuages . Cette efpece de feu eleSîrique ne fem-
bloit pas devoir faire du mal ^ (S' n arrivait
jamais a terre , au contraire celui dont le nua-
ge volcanique , (S' noir de la veille était char-
gé paroiffoit dangereux , comme P eclair , qui
s échappé d’ un violent orage , (S' nous en au-
rions eu furement quelques exemples fi P erup-
tion avait continué plus long tems , (S' fi le
nuage fe fut étendu fur la ville de Naples .
Les eclairs de cette efpece firent de grandes
ravages^ (s tuerent beaucoup de monde a plu-
fieurs milles a P entour du Vefuve pendant la
grande eruption de 1^31. , comme je P ai dé-
jà dit dans une des mes lettres precedentes fur
ce fujet .

Durant P eruption de ce jour les Reliques de
S* Janvier furent portées en Proceffion (^ expo-
fées a la vue de la Montagne furieufe au
Pont de la Maddalaine en prefence cP une po-
pulace immenje bien convaincue , que la ville
de Naples ne doit fon falut , qu a cette ce-
remonie •

Ce fut du Palais du Roi a Paufilipe que
je fis mes obfervations fur P eruption de ce
jour y (S’ en prefence de leurs Majestés Sici-
liemtes , qui ni avaient fait P honneur de ni y
ûppeller le matin dés que le Volcan commenta a
fe met ter en colere .

Mardi 10 d’ ^out le Vefuve relia tran-
quil»

Le lendemain vers les 6 . heures du matin
le cinquième , (s dernier accès de fievre de la
Montagne commenta , (st augmenta par degrés^
vers midi il étoit dans fa plus grande for-
ce

was at it*s height Ça) and very violent in-
deed, the explolions being louder , than
thofe that attended the former eruptions ;
we cou’d not judge of the height of the
voleys of ftones , and fcoriæ , as fome rainy
clouds were blended with the volcanick o-
nes , and hid the upper part of the cone ,
and crater of Vefuvius from our view .

The fame Mountains of white cotton-
like clouds piled one over an other rofe
to fuch an extreme height , and formed
fuch a coloflal mafs over Vefuvius as can
not poffibly be defcribed , or fcarfely ima-
gined ; it may have been from a fcene of
this kind , that the ancient Poets took their
ideas of the Giants w'^aging war with lu-
piter •

About five *o clock in the evening the
eruption ceafed . Some rain having fallen
this day , which having been greatly im-
pregnated with the corrofive faits of the
Volcano did much damage to the vines
in it’s neighbourhood .

Thurfday , and Friday the 12“* and 13“*
of Auguft Vefuvius continued to fmoke
confiderably , and at times slight explofions
were heard like cannon at great diftance,
but there have been no more throw^s from
it’s crater, nor any ftreams of lava from
it’s flanks fince wednefday laft .

On Saturday Auguft the 1 5“' I went ,
accompanied by Count Lamberg the Im-
perial Minifter at this Court , to vifit Ot-
taiano, and Caccia-bella , the diftria which
has been moft feverely treated by the hea-
vy, and deftruaive shower of volcanick
matter from the crater of Vefuvius laft
funday night .

Soon after having pafled the town of
Somma we began to perceive , that the
heat of the fiery shower which had fallen
in it’s neighbourhood had affeaed the lea-
ves of the trees , and vines , which we
found ftill more parched , and fchrivell’d
in proportion as we approached the town
of Ottaiano ; which may be about three

(a) It has been remarked by the oldeft people in the
neighbourhood of Vefuvius , that in it’s eruptions the
Volcano is fubjeft to a crifis at noon , and midnight ,
nnd indeed from my own obfervation I believe that re-
mark to be well founded.

Ver les 5 heures après midi f eruption cef-
fa . Une pluye chargée de quantité de fels cor-
roftfs du Volcan tomba ce jour là ^ (s fit
beaucoup de mal au vignes du voi finage .

Jeudi (s Vendredi 12» & J d’ ^out le
Vefuve continuoit a fumer beaucoup^ (S de tems
en tems on entendoit des explofions legeres ,
femblables a des coups de cannons tirés a une
grande dijlance mais il ne jetta plus de ma-
tières de fon cratere , (S' il ne fortit pas de
laves de fes flancs depuis le mecredi precedent.

Samedi 15. d'tout f allai avec la Comte
de Lamberg Minifire Imperial a Naples vi-
Jiter Ottaiano , ér Caccia-bella , les deux en-
droits qui avoient foufferts le plus par cette
pluye defiruSlive de matières volcaniques , qui
fortit du cratere du Vefuve le dimanche au
foir .

Des que nous eûmes pafsé la ville de Som-
ma nous nous apperc urnes bientôt que la cha-
leur de cette pluye de feu avott defechê , ou
brûlé les feuilles des arbres , (S' des vignes ,

(S' cela de plus en plus a mefure , que nous
approchions de la vtlle d Ottaiano , qut efi a
peu prés a trois milles de Somma . »A un mil-

miles from Somma At about the diftan-
ce of a mile from Somma we began to
perceive fresh cinders or fcoriæ of lava thin-
ly fcatter’d on the road , and in the fields;
every ftep we advanced we found them
of a larger dimenfion, and in greater abun-
dance ; at the di/lance of a mile and a
half from Ottaiano the foil was totally co-
ver’d by them , and the leaves , and fruit
were either entirely flripped from the trees,
or remained thinly on them , shrivell’d and
dried up by the intenfe heat of the volca-
nick shower .

After having pafîed through the mofl
fertile country , abounding with trees loa-
ded with fruits of every kind, and the moft
luxuriant vegetation ; through gay villages,
crouded with chearfull Inhabitants , to co-
me at once to fuch a fcene of defolation,
and mifery, affording to our view nothing
but heaps of black cinders , and ashes ,
blafted trees , ruin’d houfes , with a few of
their fcatter’d inhabitants juft return’d with
ghaftly , difmay’d countenances to furvey
the havock done to their tenements , and
habitations , ( from which they themfelves
had with difficulty efcaped alive on funday
laft),was fuch a melancholy fcene, as can
neither be defcribed , or forgotten .

We found the roof of His Sicilian Ma-
jesty’s {porting feat at Caccia-bella much
damaged by the fall of large hones , and
heavy fcoriæ , fome of which after having
been broken by their fall through the roof,
hill weigh’d upwards of thirty Pounds .
This place in a direfl line can not be lefs
than four miles from the crater of Vefu-
vius .

The moh authentick accounts have been
receiv’d of the fall of fmall volcanick ho-
nes , and cinders ( fome of which weigh’d
two ounces ) at Benevento , Foggia , and
Montemileto , upwards of thirty miles
from Vefuvius (a) , but what is moh ex-
traordinary , (as there was but little wind

the Duke of Popoli , who was at Montemileto the 8th of
Auguft had been alarmed by the shower of cinders , that
fell there, fome of which he had lent to Naples weighing

de defolation / offrit tout d' un coup a nos re-
gards , nous ne vimes plus , que des tas de
cendres , Ô* de fcortes noires , des arbres def-
fechés , des maifons en ruine , Ù* leurs babi-
tans difperfés , qui rêvé noient , le vif age pâ-
le , Ù' cojierné reconnoitre le ravage fait a
leurs terres ^ fs a leurs habitations , dou ils
avaient eu peine a fe fauver le dimanche pre-
cedent ^ (s’ il efi auffi difficile de peindre que
d oublier ce fpeSiacle lamentable .

Nous trouvâmes le toit de la maifon dechaffe
de fa Majefie Sicilienne a Caccia-’bella fort en-
domagé par la chute des greffes pierres , (S’ des
f caries ^ dont quelques unes même après avoir
été brijèes par leur chute fur le toit de la
maifon pef oient encore plus de trente livres ;
cet endroit efi éloigné d au moins 4 mtlles en
ligne droite du cratere du Vefuve ,

On a eu a Naples les relations les plus au-
tentiques de la chute de petites pierres ^(S" de
cendres volcaniques ( dont quelques unes pefo-
ient deux onces ) a Benevento , a Foggia , (s*
a Montemileto ^ c efi a dire a plus de trente
milles du Vefuve fa). Mats ce qui efi enco-
re plus extraordinaire ( le vent n étant

the town of Manfredonia, which is at the
diftance of an hundred miles from Vefu-
vius Ça) . Thefe fafts feem to confirm the
extreme fuppofed height of the column of
fire that ilfued from the crater of Vefuvius
lafl; funday night, and are greatly in fup-
port of what we find recorded in the hi-
üory of Vefuvius with refjpeft to the fall
of it’s ashes at an amazing difiance, and
in a short /pace of time, during it’s vio-
lent eruptions .

We proceeded from Caccia-bella to Ot-
taiano , which is a mile nearer to Vefu-
vius , and is reckon’d to contain twelve
thoufand inhabitants ; nothing cou’d be mo-
re difmal , than the fight of this town ,
unroof d , half burried under black fcoriæ ,
and ashes , all the windows towards the
Mountain broken , and fome of the houfes
themfelves burnt , the fireets choack’d up
with thefe ashes , ( in fome , that were
narrow , the firatum was not Icfs than four
feet thick ) and a few of the inhabitants
jufi returned were employ’d in clearing
them avay , and piling up the ashes in
hillocks to get at their ruin’d houfes . Others
were afiembled in little groups enquiring
after their friends , and neighbours, relating
each others woes , crofiing themfelves , and
liiting up their eyes to heaven , when they
mention’d their miraculous efcapes . Some
monks , who were in their convent during
the whole of the horrid shower gave us
the following particulars , which they re-
lated with folemnity , and precifion .

The Mountain of Somma , at the foot
of which Ottaiano is fituated , hides Ve-
fuvius from it’s fight, fo that till the eru-
ption became confiderable , it was not vi-
fible to them . On funday night , when

De Caccia-bella nous allâmes a Ottaiano ^
qui eji un mille plus près de Vefuve , Ô* qui
contient a ce qu on dit , dou%e mille habi-
tans ; On ne fiauroit imaginer rien de plus
trifle , que la fpeSiacle de cette ville , nous
vîmes les maifons fans toits ^ a demi enfe-
velies fous des feories -y & des cendres noire s^
toutes les fenêtres du coté de la Montagne caf-
fées , quelques unes des maifons mêmes brû-
lées y les rues remplies de cendres ( dans les
plus étroites elles montaient a la hauteur de
quatre pieds ) (3“ plufieurs des pauvres habi-^^
tans , qui y était retournés depuis , travailla-
ient , a les debaraffer en faifant des monticu-
les des cendres , qu ils avaient otèes pour fe
frayer un paffage . Z)’ autres ajfemblés en pe-
tits groupes demandaient des nouvelles de leurs
amis y Ù" de leurs voifins^Je raccontoient leurs
malheurs réciproques , faifant le figne de la
croix , (s* élevaient les mains au Ciel en par-
lant du miracle , qui leur avait confervé la
vie . Des mornes , qui étaient dans leur Cou-
vent durant ce terrible orage nous racconte-
rent cf un air encore effrayé les particularités
fuivantes .

La Montagne de Somma au pied de la quel-
le Ottaiano efl fituée cache tellement la vue
du Vefuve , que jufqu a ce que r eruption de-
vint confiderable , elle ne leur fut point vifi-
ble . Dimanche au foir quand le bruit s aug-
menta

nia, had wrote to enquire after him , imagining , that Na-
ples muft have been dellroy’d , when they at fo great a di-
llance had been fo much alarmed by a shower of minute

the 8th of Auguft , as to open all the churches , and go to

the noife increafed , and the fire began to
appear above the Mountain of Somma ,
many of the inhabitants of this town flew
to the churches , and others were preparing
to quit the town , when a fudden violent
report was heard, foon after which they
found themfelves involved in a thick cloud
of fmoke , and minute ashes ; a horrid claf-
hing noife was bear’d in the air , and pre-
fently fell a deluge of ftones , and large
fcoriæ, fome of which fcoriæ were of the
diameter of feven , or eight feet, and mufl:
have weigh’d more than an hundred pounds
before they were broken by their fall , as
fome of the fragments of them , which I
picked up in the ftreets, ftill weigh’d up-
wards of fixty pounds . When thefe large
vitrified mafles either flruck againft one an
other in the air , or fell on the ground ,
they broke in many pieces , and cover’d a
large fpace a round them with vivid fparks
of fire , which communicated their heat to
every thing, that was combuftable (<7).In
an inftant the town , and country about it
was on fire in many parts for in the vi-
neyards there were feveral draw huts , which
had been erected for the watch men of the
grapes , all of which were burnt . A great
magazine of wood in the heart of the town
was all in blaze, and had there been much
wind , the flames muft have fpred ^univer-
fally, and all the inhabitants wou’d have
infallibly been burnt in their houfes , for it
was impoifible for them to ftir out , fome,
who attempted it with pillows , tables ,
chairs , the tops of wine casks &c. on their
heads , were either knocked down , or foon
driven back to their clofe quarters , under
arches , and in the cellars of their houfes .
Many were wounded , but only two per-
fons have died of the wounds they recei-
ved from this dreadfull volcanick shower;
to add to the horror of the feene inceffant
volcanick lightening was whisking about
the black cloud, that furrounded them ,
and the fulphurious fmell , and heat wou d

fcarfely allow them to draw their breath.

des fragmens , qui pefoient encore foixante li-
vres . J^sand ces grojfes majfes de matière vi-
trifiée fe heurtaient f une contre /’ autre dans
f atmofphere , ou , qù elles tombaient a terre^
elles fe cajf oient en mille morceaux , Ô* cou-
vraient un grande e fpace d étincelles d un feu
vif ^ qui fe communiquait a tout ce qu il y
avoit de combufhble (fi) . Dans un inftant la
ville , & la campagne des environs fe trouvè-
rent enfiamées en plujieurs endroits ^ les cabanes
de paille répandues & la dans les vignobles
pour les gardes des vignes furent toutes brû-
lées , un gros maga%in de Bois au milieu de la
ville fut brulê aufii , & s il y eut eu du verity
les flammes auraient gagné toute la ville ,
les habitans auraient infalliblement pens
dans leurs maifons , car il leur était impofft-
ble d en fortir ; quelques uns , qui F effayerent
avec des oreilhers , des tables , des chaifes j
des couverts de tonneaux &c.^ fur la tête ^ ou
furent terrajfées , ou obligés de fe réfugier bien
vite dans les caves , ou fous quelque arcade •
Plujieurs furent blefsés ^ mais jufqu a prefent
il n en eft mort que deux des blejfures , qu ils
reçurent de cette terrible pluye e Ce qui ajou-
tait encore a F horreur de la feene , des eclairs

In this mlferable , and alarming fituation
they remain’d about twenty five minutes ,
when the volcanick ftorm ceafed all at on-
ce , and the frighten’d inhabitants of Otta-
iano apprehending a fresh attack from the
turbulent Mountain , haftily quitted the
country , after having depofited the fick and
bedridden , at their own defire , in the
churches .

Had the eruption lafted an hour longer,
Ottaiano muft have remain’d exaftly in the
ftate of Pompeii which was hurried under
the ashes of Vefuvius juft 1770 years ago
with moft of it’s inhabitants , whofe bones
are to this day frequently found under ar-
ches , and in the cellars of the houfes of
that ancient city .

We were told of many miracles that
had been wrought by the Images of Saints
at this place , during the late difafter , but
as they are quite foreign to my purpofe ,
I shall , as ufual , pafs them over in fi-
lence .

The Palace of the Prince of Ottaiano is
fituated on an eminence above the town ,
and nearer the Mountain ; the fteps leading
up to it being deeply cover’d with volca-
nick matter, refembled the cone of Vefu-
vius, and the white marble ftatues on the
baluftrade made a lingular appearence pee-
ping from under the black ashes , which
had entirely cover’d , both the baluftrade ,
and their pedeftals. The roof of the Pala-
ce was totally deftroy’d, and the windows
were broken , but the houfe itfelf being
ftrongly built , had not fuffer’d much .

We had an opportunity of feeing here
exaftly the quality of the dreadfull shower,
as the volcanick matter , which broke
through the roof of the Palace , and fell
into the garretts , on the balconies , and
in the courts , had not been removed . It
was compofed of the fcoriæ of fresh lava
much vitrified , great , and fmall , mixed
with fragments of ancient folid lavas of
different forts , many pieces were invello-
ped by the new lava , which formed a
cruft about them , and others were only
slightly varnish’d by the fresh lava, thefe
kind of ftones being very compaft , and fo-
me weighing 8 or 10 pounds muft have
fallen with greater force , than the heavier

Ottaiano aurait eu le fort de Pompéii qui fut
cnfevalie fous les cendres du Vefuve il y a
1700 ans avec la plus grande partie de fes
habitans , dont on découvre les os frequente-
ment a prefent fous les voûtes , & dans les
caves des maifons de cette ancienne ville .

On nous racconta differens miracles opérés
par les Images des Saints dans cet endroit pen-
dant /’ eruption derniere , mais , comme ils nap-
partienent pas a mon plan , je les pajferai com-
me de coutume fous fflence .

Le Palais du Prince dt Ottajano efl fitué fur

Nous eûmes tout lieu ici de voir dift in Ele-
ment la qualité de cette pluye terrible , la ma-
tière volcanique , qui avoit percé les toits , &
qui ètoit tombée dans les greniers^ fur les bal-
cons , Ô* dans les cours du Palais n avoit
point encore été enlevée . Elle ètoit compofée
de greffes , & de petites feories cf une lave
nouvelle , (s* très vitrifiée melée de fragments
d ’ anciennes laves folides , é?’ de differentes ef-
peces y plufieurs morceaux étaient envelopés dans
la nouvelle lave , qui formait une croûte a
r entour *. D’ autres n étaient , que vernijfés
par la lave fraiche. Ces efpeces de pierres é-
tant très compares , & quelques unes du poids
de 8 ou 10 livres durent tomber avec beau-
coup plus de force que les feories , qui quoi-

The Pallace of Ottaiano is built on a
thick ftratum of ancient lava , wich ran
from the Mountain of Somma , when in
it’s aftive volcanick ftate ; under this ftra-
tum we were shewn three grotto’s from
which iflues a confiant extreme cold wind,
and at times with impetuofity , and a noi-
fe like water dashing upon rocks . They
are shut up with doors , like cellars , and
are made ufe of as fuch , as alfo to keep
provilions fresh , and to cool liquors . I
had never feen thefe VenParoU before ; in
my letter to Dr. Maty upon the nature
of the foil round Naples I have mention’d
others of the fame kind that I had met
with on Vefuvius, Etna, and in the Island
of ifehia (a ) ,

We obferved , that the tra£l of country
completely cover’d with a ftratum of the
volcanick matter above mention’d, was about
two miles, and a half broad, and as much
in length , in which fpace the vines , and
fruit trees were totally flripp’d of their
leaves , and fruit , and had the appearen-
ce of being quite burnt up, but to my great
furprife , having vifited that country again
two days ago , I faw thofe very trees ,
which were cherry , apple , pear , peach ,
and abricot in blofom again , and fome
with the fruit already formed , and of the
lize of hazel nuts . The vines there had
alfb put forth fresh leaves , and were in
bloom . Many foxes , hares , and other ga-
me were deftroy’d by the fiery shower in
the diflri£l of Somma , and Ottaiano (a ) .

des portes , comme des caves , (S' on en fait
la même ufage pour conferver les proviftons ,
Ô* tenir les liqueurs fraiches . Je n avais pas
encore vu ces Ventaroîi y dans ma lettre au
DoSieur Maty fur la nature du fol des envi-
rons de Naples , f ai fait mention de plufieurs
autres de la même efpece^ que f ai découvert
fur le Vefuve , le mont Etna , (S' dans l'isle

Nous remarquâmes que /’ efpace couvert en
entier dé une couche de matière volcanique de
la derniere eruption était dé environ deux mil-
les (s' demi de longeur ^ (S' dé autant en lar-
geur j dans toute cette étendue les vignes , Ô*
les arbres fruitiers étaient dépouillés de leur
fruits ^ (s' de leur feuilles , (S' paroijfoient brû-
lés , mais a mon grand etonnement ayant vi-
fité ce même Pais il y a deux jours , j' ai vu
ces mêmes arbres ( qui étaient des cerifters ,
des pruniers , des pechers , (S' des abricotiers )
tous en fleur ^ (S’ fur quelques uns le fruit deja
bien formé ^ (S* de la grojfeur déune noifette .
Les vignes avaient aufjéi pouffées de nouvelles
feuilles , (S' commenpient a fleurir . Plufieurs

On the i8“* of September I went upon
Mount Vefuvius accompanied by Lord Her-
bert , and m}’^ ufual guide . We cou’d not
poffibly reach it’s crater being cover’d with
a thick fmoke too fulphurious, and off'en-
hve to be encounter’d , neither wou’d it
have been prudent to have ventured up ,
had there not been that impediment , as it
was evident from the loud reports we
heard from time to time , that there exi-
ted ftill a great fermentation within the
bowels of the Volcano . We therefore con-
tented ourfelves with examining the effefts
of the late extraordinary eruption on it’s
cone , and in the valley between it , and
the Mountain of Somma .

The conical part of Vefuvius is now co-
ver’d with fragments of lava , and feoriæ,
which makes the afeent much more diffi-
cult , and troublefome , than when it was
only cover’d with minute ashes . The par-
ticularity of this laft eruption was , that
the lava , which ufually ran out of the
flanks of the Volcano forming cafeades ,
rivers, and rivulets of liquid fire, was now
chiefly thrown up from it’s crater in the
form of a gigantick fountain of fire (^) .

inclined to think, that a fudden communication of water

phenomenon , particularly , as we know , that pools of rain
water have been found formely in caverns with in the bo*
wels of Vefuvius, and, that a river fuppofed to be that
anciently call’d Draco, and which was burried by an an-
cient eruption , burft out fome years ago with fuch force
from under a ftratum of lava at Torre del Greco as to be
fufficient to turn mills there , but a late curious experiment
mention’d by Mr. Faujas in his recherches fur les Volcans
éteints ( page ) feems to contradift my fuppofition
and that water introduced to the furnace of a Volcano fin-
ding there a more rarified air wou’d not produce an ex-
plolion . Monfieur Deslandes Direftor of the Royal mani-
fa£lure of looking glafs at St. Gobin , made the following
cx?periment in 17^8 in the prefence of the Duke de la Roch-
foucout , Monfieur de Faujas, and others * 'he poured fome
water upon a quantity of glafs in fufion , and which had

infupportable ^ qu on n of oit rifquer de /’ ap-
procher , independament de cette fumée il n au-
rait pas même été prudent de s avancer trop
prés , car les coups forts , que nous enten-
dîmes de tems a autre au dedans du Vol-
can annonçaient encore une très grande fer-
mentation . Nous nous contentâmes donc d'exa-
miner les effets finguliers de la derniere erup-
tion fur le cône , Ù" dans le vallon entre le
Vefuve Ù" la Montagne de Somma .

La partie conique du Vefuve efî aSluellement
toute couverte de fragments de laves ^ (3‘ de
feories , qui en rendent la montée beaucoup plus
feabreufe , (S' beaucoup plus pénible , que ,
quand elle ètoit fmplement couverte de cendres
fines . Ce qu il y a de particulier dans cet-
te derniere eruption c efi que la lave , qui
for toit ordinairement des flancs du Volcan^ &
y formait des cafeades , des rivieres , Ô' des

Which falling ftill in feme degree of
fufion, has, in a manner, cafed up the
conical part of Vefuvius with a ftratum of
hard feoriæ , on the fide next to the Moun-
tain of Somma , that ftratum is furely mo-
re than 1 00 feet thick , forming a high
ridge ; the valley between Vefuvius , and
Somma has received fuch a prodigious quan-
tity of lava, and other volcanik matter du-
ring this laft eruption , that it is ralfed ,
as is imagined 250 feet , or more , three
fuch eruptions as the laft wou d compleat-
Jy fill up the valley, and by uniting Ve-
fuvius, and Somma, form them into one
Mountain , as they moft probably were be-
fore the great eruption in the Reign of
Titus . In short I found the wole face of
Vefuvius changed . Thofe curious channels
in which the lava ran in the month of
May laft are all buried, the Volcano^ ap-
pears to have likewife increafed in height,
the form of the crater is changed , a great
piece of it’s rim towards Somma being
wanting , and on the fide towards the fea
it is alfo broken. There are fbme very lar-
ge cracks towards the point of the cone
of the Volcano , which makes it probable,
that more of the borders of the crater will
fall in : The ridge of fresh Volcanick mat-
ter on the cone of Vefuvius towards Som-
ma, and the thick ftratum in the valley
are likewife full of cracks, from which
there ifllies a conftant fulphurious fmoke
that tinges them , and the circumjacent
fcorlae, and cinders, with a deep yellow ,
or fbme times a white tint . Thefe laft
mention’d cracks , tho deep , do not , as
I apprehend , pafs the ftratum formed by
the laft eruption, and which from its ex-
treme thicknefs , particularly in the valley,
will probably retain a great degree of

been in that ftate in the crucible for twelve hours . The
water did not occafion the leaft fermentation , but on the
contrary roll’d upon it’s furface without even producing any
fmoke,' and after having become feemingly red hot like the
metal in fufion, difappeared in about three minutes wuhout
having occafion’d the leaft explofion. If the great emiflions
of lava abovemention’d were not then occafion d by water
mixing with the lava , may not they have been produ-
ced by violent fubterraneous exhalations having forced their
way into the cauldron of the Volcano ( if I
low’d the expreffion ) replete with matter in fufion and
blown it’s whole contents with what ever oppofed it 5 pal-
fage at once into the air

Vefuve , ( 3 " Somma , n en feraient qu une
feule Montagne ; il eji probable , qù elles éta-
ient ainfi reuniés avant la grande eruption ,
qut arriva fous Titus . En un mot j at trouve
toute la face du Vefuve changée y Ces canaux
curieux dans les quels la lave couloit au mois
de Mai precedent font tous entièrement cou-
verts y le Volcan parait aujft avoir augmenté
en hauteur , la forme du cratere n ejl plus la
même , un gros morceau de fon bord vers Som-
ma a été emporté ^ & il eft cafsé aujft du co-
té de la mer . Vers la pointe du cône on voit
de larges fentes , ce qui fait croire que (f au-
tres morceaux des bords du cratere pourraient
bientôt tomber dans la bouche du V ilcan , Lc-
levation , qu ont produite dernièrement ces ma-
tières volcaniques fur le cône du Vefuve du
coté de Somma ^ & la couche epaijfe des mê-
mes matières dans le vallon , font remplies de
fentes d ou fort continuellement une fumée ful-
phureufe , qui répand fur toutes les feories ,

Il eat for fome years to come , as did a
thick ftratum of lava that ran into the
grande in the year iy6y.

The number , and fize of the ftones, or
more properly {peaking , of the fragments
of lava , which have been thrown out of
the Volcano in the courfe ofthelaft erup-
tion, and which lie fcatterd thick on the
cone of Vefuvius , and at the foot of it ,
is realy incredible. The largeft we mea-
fured was in circumference no lefs than
108 english feet, and 17 feet high, it is
a folid block , and is much vitrified , in
fome parts of it there are large pieces of
pure glafs of a brown yellow colour , like
that of which our common bottles are ma-
de , and throughout it’s pores feem to be
filled with perfedf vitrifications of the fa-
me fort . The fpot where it alighted is
plainly marked by a deep impreflion al-
mofl: at the foot of the cone of the Vol-
cano, and it took three bounds before it
fettled , as is plainly perceived by the marks
it has left on the ground , and by the fio-
nes which it has pounded to attorns under
it’s prodigious weight when we confider
the enormous fize , and weight of fuch a
folid mafs , thrown at leaft a quarter of
a mile clear of the mouth of the Volca-
no , we can but admire the wonderfull
powers of nature , of which , being fo
very feldom within the reach of human
infpeéf ion , we are in general too apt to
judge upon much too fmall a fcale .

An other folid block of ancient lava
feet in circumference , and ip feet high ,
being nearly of a fpherical shape , was
thrown out at the fame time , and lies near
the former . This fione , which has the
marks of having been rounded, nay almoft
polished by continual rolling in torrents,
or on the fea shore , and yet having been
fo undoubtedly thrown out of the Volca-
no, may be the fubje£f of curious fpecula-
tion (a) . An other block of folid lava ,
that was thrown much farther , and lies

de les voir dans toute leur etendue .

que , fut jettée en meme tems , (y refie prés
de la premiere y celle ci paroit avoir été ar-
rondie^ Ù" même prefque polie a force de rou-
let dans des torrents , ou fur le rivage de la
mer , offre une matière intereffante aux fpe-
culations des Naturalijies (a ) . Un autre maffe
de lave folide qui a été jettée bien plus loin^

Ô* qui fe trouve encore dans le vallon entre
le cône du Vefuve ^ (S’ f Hermitage a 16 pieds

in the valley between the cone of Vefu-
vius , and the Hermitage is 1 5 feet high,
and Ç2 feet in circumference, tho it plainly
appears by the large fragments , that lie
round , and were detatched from it by
the shock of it’s fall , that it muft have
been twice as confiderable when in the air.

. There are thoufands of very large frag-
ments of different fpecies of ancient , and
modern lava’s , that lie fcatter’d by the la-
te explofions on the cone of Vefuvius ,
and in the valleys at it’s foot , but thefe
three were the largefl of thofe we mea-
fured (a) ,

We found alfo many fragments of thofe
volcanick bombs that burfl in the air , as
mention’d in the former part of this jour-
nal , and fome entire , having fall’n to the
ground without burning . The fresh red
hot and liquid lava having been thrown
up with numberle/s fragments of ancient
lava’s , the latter were often clofely invel-
ioped by the former, and probably, when
fuch fragments of lava were porous , and
full of air bubbles , as is often the cafe ,
the extreme outward heat fuddenly rarifying
the confined air, caufcd an explofion ; when
thofe fragments were of a more compact
lava , they did not explode , but were Am-
ply inclofed by the lava , and acquired a
îpherical form by whirling in the air, or
rolling down the fteep fides of the Vol-
cano .

The shell , or outward coat of the bombs
that burft , and of which we found feve-
ral pieces , was always compofod of fresh
lava, in which many fplinters of the mo-
re ancient lava that had been inclofed , are
feen flicking . I was much pleafed with
this difcovery , having been greatly puzzled
for an explanation of this volcanick ope-
ration , which was new to me , and which
was very frequent , during the eruption of
the 9*** of Augufl .

Il y a des milliers de gros fragments de
differentes efpeces de laves anciennes^ & mo-
dernes , qui repofent fur la cône du Vefuve ,
Ô* dans les vallons au tour de fa bafe ^ ^
qui y ont été placés par les dernieres explo-
rons , mais ceux^ que Je viens de citer ^ éta-
ient les plus grands de tous ceux ^ que nous
avons mefurés (a) .

Nous trouvâmes auffi plufteurs morceaux de
ces bombes volcaniques , qui creverent en Pair^
Ù" dont f ai fait la dejeription dans une au-
tre partie de ce journal y quelques unes tom-
bées a terre fans crever étaient toutes entiè-
res . ha lave fraiche , liquide , élt' infam-
mée ayant été avec une très grande quantité
de fragments de laves anciennes , celles ci ont
jouvent été enveloppés en entier par la lave
nouvelle * , Ô* vraifemblablement , quand de
tels fragments de lave étaient poreux , és" rem-
plis de bulles cP air ( ce qui arrive f auvent )
P extreme chaleur extérieure rarifiant P air en-
fermée , caufoit une explofion y lorfque enfuite
ces fragments fe trouvaient d’ une lave plus
compaEie , P explofion n avait pas lieu , ils éta-
ient fimplement couvert de la lave fraiche ,
éy ils prenaient une forme fpherique par leur
mouvement de rotation en P air , ou en roulant
fur les flancs efearpés du Volcan *,

La partie extérieure^ ou Pecorce des bom-
bes , qui creverent , Ô* dont nous trouvâmes
beaucoup de morceaux étoit toujours compofée
de lave nouvelle , dans la quelle on voyait plu-
fieurs éclats d une lave plus ancienne , qui
y avoit été renfermée Cette decouverte me
flt cP autant plus de plaifir , que je rn étais
beaucoup tourmenté pour trouver une explica-
tion de cette operation volcanique , qui m étoit
tout a fait nouvelle , (D' qui fut très frequen-
te pendant P eruption du p cP^out.

on the 5*** of Auguft was likewife clear-
ly explained to me here. I have already
mention’d , that the lava thrown up by
this eruption , was in general more perfe-
dly vitrified, than that of any former e-
ruption , and which appeared plainly upon
a nearer examination of the fragments of
folid fresh lava , the pores of which we
generally found full of a pure vitrification,
and the fcoriæ itfelf, upon a clofe exami-
nation with a magnifying glafs , appeared
like a confufed heap of filaments of a foul
vitrification . When a piece of the folid
fresh lava had been cracked in it’s fall wi-
thout feperating entirely , we always faw
capillary fibres of perfeft glafs reaching from
fide to fide within the cracks . If I may
be allow’d a mean comparifon , which ho-
wever conveys the idea of what I wish to
explain better than any other, I can think
of, this lava refembled a rich Parmefan
Gheefe , which when broken and gently
, feparated fpins out tranfparent filaments ,
from the little cells , that contain’d the
clammy liquor of which thofe filaments
were compofed , The natural fpun glafs
then that fell at Ottaiano during this e-
ruption , as well , as that , which fell in
the Isle of Bourbon in the year lyôô.muû
have been formed , moft probably , by the
operation of fuch a fort of lava as has
been juft defcribed , cracking , and fepara-
ting in the air at the time of it’s emiflion
from the craters of the Volcanos , and by
that means fpinning out the pure vitrified
matter from it’s pores, or cells, the wind
at the fame time carrying off thofe fila-
ments of glafs as faft as they were produced.

I obferved flicking to fome very large
fragments of the new lava , and which
were of a clofe grain , fome pieces of a
fubftance , whofe texture very much refem-
bled that of a true pumice ftone , and upon
a clofer examination , and having feparated
them from the lava , I perceived , that this
fubftance had aftually been forced out of
the minute pores of the folid ftone itfelf,
and was a colleflion of fine vitrous fibres,
or filaments confounded together at the
time of their being prelTed out by the con-
tradion of the large fragments of lava in
cooling , and which had bent downwards

que les parties fe fujfent entièrement feparés ^
nous y vîmes toujours des fibres capillaires cP
un verre parfait , qui s e tendaient tP un coté
a P autre au dedans des fentes * . S' il wPeji
permis de me fervir d'une comparaifon ^ a la vé-
rité peu noble , mais qui pourra donner mieux
que toute autre P idée de ce que je voudrais
expliquer , cette lave refembloit au fromage
gras du parmefan , qui lors qu il efl caffé ,
^ que les morceaux en font feparés doucement
filent des fibres minces (S" tranfparentes hors
des cellules ^ ou efl contenue la liqueur vifqueu-
fe dont ces fibres font compofés . Le verre fi-
lé , qui tomba a Ottaiano dans cette éruption^
de même que celui , Qf*i tomba a l Isle de
Bourbon en ij 66 . fut donc vraifemhlablement
produite par P aPiion d' une lave femblable a
celle dont je viens de donner la defcription
cette lave en fe caffant & fe feparant en
P air aura tiré de fes pores , ou de fes cel-
lules une matière parfaitement vitrifiée , que
le vent aura emporté auffitât après fa forma-
tion * .

tachant de la lave pour les examiner de plus V.n.7.
prés je m apper^us , que cette matière avoit
été véritablement pouffée hors des pores les plus
fins de ces mêmes pierres folides , Ù" qu elle
n étoit qu un amas de fibres ou de filaments
fnifices , ^ vitreux entortillés , (S confondus
enfemble au moment , qù ils fortoient des po-
res de ces gros fragments de lave , qui s e-
toicnt referrés en fe reffroidiffant , (S’ que le

by their own weight: This curious fub-
ftance has the lightnefs of a pumice, and
refembles it in every refpe£l except being
of a darker colour .

When the pores of the fresh folid lava
were large , and filled with pure vitrified
matter , we found that matter feme times
blown into bubbles in it’s furface I fuppo-
fe by the air, which had been forced out
at the time the lava contraded itfelf in
cooling; Thofe bubbles being thin shew’d,
that this volcanick glafs has the kind of
tranfparency of our common glafs bottles
and is like them of a dirty yellow colour.
I detatched with a hammer fame large ,
and folid pieces of this kind of glafs , as
big as my lift, which adhered to , and was
incorporated with fome of the larger frag-
ments of lava and tho of the fame kind ,
from their thicknefs they appeared perfedly
black , and were opaque . An other parti-
cularity is remarkable in the lava of this
eruption many detatched pieces of it are
in the shape of a barley corn , or of a
plumbftone ; fmall at each end , and thick
in the middlle ; we picked up feveral ,
and faw many more , which were too hea-
vy for us to carry off, for they mufi: have
weigh’d more than 6o pounds . Some of
the fmaller ones do not weigh an ounce .
I fuppofe them to be drops from the li-
quid fountain of fire of the of Auguft,

and which might very naturally acquire
fuch a form in their fall , but the peafants
in the neighbourhood of Vefuvius are well
convinced , that they are the thunder bolts
that fell with the volcanick lightening .

We found many of the volcanick bombs;^
or properly fpeaking round balls of fresh
lava , large and fmall , all of which ha-
ve a Nucleus compofed of a fragment of
more ancient , and folid lava . There were
alfo fome other curious vitrifications , very
different from any I had ever feen before
mixed with the late fall’n shower of hu-
ge feoriæ , and malfes of lava .

Tho I have endeavord to be as particu-
lar , and clear as poflible in the defeription
I have given of the curious fubftances pro-
duced

parfaitement vitrifiée . Nous trouvâmes cette
matière quelque fois en forme de boules fur
la furface * produite , comme je le fuppofe ,
par f air comprimé qui s etoit échappé de ces
pores ^ au moment.^ que la lave s efl referréc
en fe refroidijfant , Ces boules ètans minces ,
montraient , que ce verre volcanique avoit le
degré de tranfparence de nos bouteilles ordinai-
res^ Ù’ la même couleur de jaune foie, f ai
détaché avec un marteau quelques morceaux fo-
lides de cette efpece de verre gros comme le
poingt , qui étaient adherens , Ô* incorporés
avec quelques uns des plus gros fragments de
lave , (2“ quoiqu ils fujfent de la même natu-
re , leur epaijfeur les fai f oit paroi tre pasfaite-
ment noirs , (S’ opaques *. La lave de cette
eruption offrait une autre particularité , c e(i
que plufieurs des morceaux détachés ont la
forme d ’ un grain cf orge , ou d’ un noyeau de
prune , étant pointus au deux bouts , (S’ gros
au milieu * . Nous en ramaffames quelques uns^
Ô* nous en vîmes autres trop lourds pour être
tranfportés commodément , car ils pefoient fu-
rement plus de 6o livres . J^elques uns des
plus petits ne pefoient pas un once y crois
qu ils pourvoient bien être des goûtes détachées
de la fontaine de feu liquide du S cf j4out ,
qù ils ont pu acquérir une forme femblahle en
tombant , mais les Pdifans des environs du
Vefuve ne doutent point , qù elles ne foyient
les foudres mêmes , qui accompagnèrent les e-
clairs volcaniques .

Nous trouvâmes plufieurs bombes volcaniques
ou pour mieux dire de ces boules rondes de
la nouvelle lave^ qui avoient touts un Nucleus
ou noiau cempofé d ’ un fragment de lave foli-
de plus ancienne *. Il y avoit auffi d’ autres
vitrifications très curieufes , (^ bien differentes
de toutes celles , que f avois remarqué jufqù
alors * . Celles ci fe trouvoient mêlées avec
les groffes feories , (S’ les maffes de laves qui
furent jettées pendant la derniere eruption .

duced by the late eruption of Vefuvius ,
yet as fpeciméns of thofe fubftances will
explain more at one fight than I can pre-
tend to do by whole pages in writing , I
shall not fail to fend you by the firft fa-
vorable opportunity a colleftion of them ,
which I have fet a part for that purpofe,
particularly as I flatter my felf they may
ferve to give fbme light into a hitherto
cbfcure fubjeft , I mean the nature , and
manner of the formation of pumice ftones.

Vefuvius continues to fmoke confiderably,
and we had a slight shock of an earthqua-
ke yefterday^ fo that I do not think, not-
withstanding the late eruption having been
fo very confiderable , that the Volcano has
vented itfelf fo fufficiently , as to remain
Jong quiet.
