ELECTRIC-WELDED SILVER-GLOSS STEEL CHASES Every bar of steel used in the manufacture of our Electric-Welded Silver-Gloss Steel Chases is made up from a special grade of open-hearth steel. This special mixture was compounded to meet the peculiar conditions of electro-welding, which require- ments are that the impurities shall be very low, so that the steel shall weld well and also prevent what is known as a congregation of impurities rendering the steel brittle and liable to breakage. The secret of the Electric-Welded Silver-Gloss Steel Chase lies, first, in the grade of steel used and second in the method of welding. In electro-welding the heat is first generated at the center of the bars, and thus the weld is made from the center out- ward. This is just the opposite to what takes place in making the common hammer and anvil weld, and is largely responsible for the perfection of the electric weld. In electro-welding, too, exactly the right amount of heat may be applied to bring the metal to just the degree of fusibility that gives the best result. The material is not weakened by burning, nor is its temper drawn at any point except where the weld is made; and yet the heat is sufficient to cause the molecules of steel to intermingle just as they would were the metal melted and cast in a mold ; hence it is that the four bars originally used for making an Electric-Welded Chase really become one solid, perfect piece of steel, without flaw or blemish of any sort to indicate that a weld has been made. The first cost of the Electric-Welded Chases is a little higher than the prices charged for chases made from cast-iron, but they will last a lifetime, and when cost alone is considered, are much cheaper in the end. But when the value of time they save stone- man and pressman, and the cutting out of loss thru pied forms caused by broken chases are taken into account, the printer who will not recognize their value and supply his office with them must be short-sighted indeed. In ordering give exact outside measurements. Where chases are to fit press give actual size of bed. An allowance of 9% inch will be made in the length of the chases. INSTRUCTIONS AS TO THE ORDERING OF CHASES IMPORTANT—In ordering chases mistakes will be avoided by observing the following instructions: Give outside measure- ments. Where chase or chases are to fit press give actual size of bed; an allowance of 36 inch will be made in length of chases. If chases are to be made from other than regular stock, state size desired. If side sticks are ordered, state whether they are to be straight or beveled, and give length of forms if other than standard newspaper size. After the chase is finished both the serial number and our trade-mark is stamped on same. From the very beginning we have kept a card index of all dimensions, size of stock, etc., thus simplifying the ordering of duplicate chases. Distance between mortises A and B, B and C, and D and E, 3 inches. Distance between mortises X and Y, Y and Z, and V and W, 2 inches. The two short bars in this chase are placed in mortises distant from each other half the length of the paper to be printed. For example, if a chase is made to hold a form to print on 32×44 stock, then the out- side mortises will be 22 inches apart (A to Z), center to center, and the bars will accurately fix the position of the running heads and folios, so that there will be no registering of pages on stone or press. For stock 40 inches long, bars should be placed at A and Y, giving distance of 20 inches; for 41-inch paper add 3-pica fur- niture to outside of each bar and for 42– inch paper add 6-pica furniture. The latter with a 4-pica bar would measure 10 picas in the head. For 38-inch stock use mortises B and Z. For 22X32 paper use C and Z, and for 24×36 use A and X. For regular weekly or monthly publications or for any work of uniform style and size standard in any office it is best to have chases with rigid bars of width and posi- tion to fit the work exactly. For miscel- laneous book and magazine work the style with narrow bars and mortises is better. The form is locked up on three sides and in the middle when the long bar is not used; when the long bar is used, on four sides and in the middle. This chase with four bars, two long and two short, may be used in locking up either 16 or 32 page forms of various sizes, by shifting bars to the right mortises to give the correct position to the heads of pageS. This chase is arranged for use in lock- ing up 32-page forms, but an additional short bar should be ordered, so that it may be readily converted into the chase illustrated in Fig. 1 by taking out one long bar and adding one short one. The two Sixteens are locked up in same as single sixteens. The price of this chase is found in the Same manner as for our regular chases. There is no extra charge on account of the patent. BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER UTILITY ELECTRIC–WELDED SILVER-GLOSS STEEL JOB-PRESS CHASE - The Utility Job Chase meets a long-felt rº --- want in the job pressroom. With it you can - - lock up a form without having any “spring” in it. The bars and cross-bars act just like a spider chase, as they can be put close to the form, which prevents it from springing. It is an ordinary and a spider chase combined in one. Compositors, as a rule, are not affected by “sprung" forms. So long as everything is tight they are satisfied. But - not so the pressman. What does he do when - - Bºi he receives the form? Usually he unlocks it VANA). AN º and with the help of a few strips of cardboard º endeavors to lock it up so it will not spring. - - - The Utility Chase does for the pressman what the lining system has done for the compositor (breaks up the scissors and cardboard habit), and by so doing saves time in the printery. It came into being because a practical printer realized the need of it. He made one for his own use and found it a great improvement over the ordinary chase. The sides of the chase are grooved. Steel bars, as easly removed as ordinary wood fur- niture, fit into these grooves. They can be (PATENTED MARCH 28, 1905) placed in any desired position. The bars engaging the sides of the chase are also grooved to receive shorter cross-bars of any desired length. The illustration shows the method of locking the form in this chase. Place the bars as close as possible to the form, then put the balance of the furniture and quoins on outside, as shown. The Utility Chase has been tried and proved. It gives satisfaction wherever used. It is just what you need on all job presses. If you are buying a new press specify that it be supplied with the Utility Chase. Each chase is provided with two bars. The short bars (A–B) are made in 15, 20, 25, 30, 40, 50 and 60 em lengths. The top is raised by pulling the lever toward the operator, and lowered by pushing the lever back. At one end of the top is a dovetailed recess, which fits into a cor- responding recess in a steel strip attached to the end of a beating table or the surface of a matrix press. The two surfaces are brought together, the make-up top is raised and its dovetailed recess lowered into that of the beating table. This joining of sur- faces is entirely self-adjusting. Thus held the two surfaces cannot move apart when the form is being slid from one to the other, avoiding all danger of mishaps in this operation. The dovetailed recess or interlocking edge of the Truck is shown at A in cut. Showing interlocking recesses on Make-up and Matrix Tables, ready to join. Showing the two Tables interlocked, done by lowering top of the Make-up Truck. All Self-Adjusting Make-Up or Transfer Trucks, unless otherwise ordered, are made 38% inches high, which is the standard height in newspaper offices. Orders for heights and sizes other than those listed below are promptly filled. Finished regularly in olive-green enamel. Furnished with or without shelf in bottom. SUPERIOR FORM ROLLER This is the handiest and most reliable form conveyance made. It can be attached in- stantly; can be attached to any chase; can be attached while form is on stone or press. FORM TRUCK The use of a Form Truck should be insisted upon in every pressroom of any size, not only because it is a time-saver, but because sliding forms along the floor is a source of frequent accidents. This Form Truck differs from previous makes in that the trough for the form is placed above instead of below the center of the wheels, and it is much longer, being 13 inches in length. The higher position of the trough does away with the possibility of the type in the form coming into contact with the wheels. It is machined from solid cold-rolled steel bars, with the exception of the eccentric holding dogs, which are of brass. Every Superior Chase Lock is tested out as in actual use, on a large, true surface plate, before being shipped. Notice the simplicity of the Superior Chase Lock as shown in the illustration. The side-bars are left in place for each job. The chase is gauged on anywhere on the bed of the press, the cross-bar is placed in the notches nearest the chase and the two dogs are put into place, then the adjusting screws on the end of each side-bar are screwed up by hand until the dogs are hand- tight on top and sides of the chase. Now screw up on the clamps on the bed of the press and the chase is held absolutely tight on all four sides. No chance for off-register or work-up. Makes locking on a chase a pleasure. It is the best chase lock made and every cylinder press either drum or two-revolution, should be equipped with it. º º º 22 ºntºniº- - ------ In ordering Superior Chase Locks be sure and state the following facts: name of press, whether drum or two-revolution, and do not give the advertised size of press bed, but send in actual depth of bed and width between bearers of press on which the lock is to be used, as on some presses the advertised size and the actual size varies as much as % inch or more. The width between bearers determines price. The Superior Chase Lock is shipped in a wooden case, which can be placed under the press out of the way, or hung on the wall. NOTE: If a Superior Chase Lock is desired for two presses in the same office, it is not necessary in all cases to buy two full sets, as an extra set of cross-bars is sufficient, the price of which is one-half the price of the chase lock as indicated by the in- side width between bearers. For example, if a chase lock is purchased for a bed 35×50 (price of which is $21.00) and cross-bars are desired for a press measuring 62 inches inside the bearers, the additional charge would be $12.00. SPECIAL NOTE: Some printers, however find that they can use the Superior Chase Locks without the front plain cross-bar, the two dogs and the back cross-bar without notches. We, therefore, will make up the Lock in this simplified combination at $6.00 less than the list price for the complete set. 12 BARNHART BROTHERS & SPINDLER STEEL COMPOSING AND MAKE-UP RULES Composing Rules in Leather Case. The one end is a cylinder and bearer gauge and with it the cylinder, bearer and rollers of a press can be adjusted accurately. While a great many printing offices and pressrooms now have a Practical Height Gauge, there are still thou- sands of offices which would have use for one of them almost every day and find it a most desirable labor- saving device. As soon as cuts are received from the engraver or electrotyper they should be tested for height. If, before locking blocks in a form, they are first passed thru this Gauge, face downward, all dis- crepancies in height are at once made apparent and - can be quickly corrected. If too high the blocks can - be shaved or sandpapered to proper height. If too low the Gauge will show it and they can be built up to the required height. After being made up the form need not be unlocked or removed from the press, avoiding all danger of pied forms, shifted rules and loose type. The time and money saved by turning over cuts of proper height to the compositor is too evident to need lengthy argument. The Gauge is neatly finished and takes up but little space. It admits blocks 12 inches wide and of any length. This patent galley is made and sold under a guarantee that it is better and stronger than any other galley. With proper use it will practically last forever. Of rough use, such as galleys invariably get in large offices, it will stand more than any other. Heretofore there has never been a galley which would hold fast at the corners when used around machines or for handling large heavy pages, but this One-Piece Rim Galley will hold fast all around. The rim is flanged so that the galley with its load can be readily and safely grasped. No type load will cause yielding and nothing short of inexcusable abuse will affect the accuracy and durability of this galley. STYLE B, witH Both SIDES HIGH This galley was designed to furnish an efficient and quick method of handling linotype slugs. It is made in two styles: Style A, where slugs are use exclusively, and Style B, where type is used in connection with the slugs. In Style A one side of the galley rim is made considerably lower than the other and the inside of the rims are tapered at the top, which permits very rapid corrections, as the slugs can be tipped up endwise and lifted out of the galleys without interference from the sides. Style B is made with both ends of equal height and finished straight inside. Both styles are locked at the bottom by a foot clamp, which slides over the rims and is tightened by pushing the lever to the left. Pins are set into the ends of the rims to keep the clamp from sliding off and getting lost. Prices for either style galley are the same. - lear. - widºr H 10 OR LESS 11 To 49 50. The end-piece is made remov- able and the sides are milled out at the ends, so that the end-piece can be set at either end, as desired. By this means the operator on the Monotype is able to shift the end of the galley, after it comes from the machine, thus avoiding the necessity of transferring the matter from one galley to another when making up. This added advantage will be appreciated by those who know the trouble caused where solid-end galleys are used. The rims are angle-shaped and are riveted to the bottoms by short but strong rivets. The slug is in two parts, one giving the number of the “take" and the other the number of the case or compositor, and is so matched and grooved that it can very readily be extracted from lock-up matter on a galley. The “case” portion of the slug (fig. 2) is to be kept at respective cases or composing machines. At or near the copy desk is placed a receptacle for the “take” portion (fig. 1). Superior Steel Furniture is one of the greatest labor-savers ever introduced to the printing trade. For color and blank work there is nothing that can compare with it. It makes a light and accurate form and insures a square and reliable lock-up. Superior Steel Furniture is made of specially cold-drawn steel. It consists of pieces of steel accurate in every dimension to the thousandth part of an inch, and cut to accurage lengths, with milled notched ends, which can be quickly set around blank spaces instead of filling them in the ordinary way with wood or metal furniture. Weight for weight it goes six times as far in filling space as metal furniture, and can be put into a form in from one-half to one-sixth the time. We herewith give the schemes of the different fonts into which we regularly pack Superior Steel Furniture, with the list prices. With the same investment the steel will possess several times the covering or EL FURNITURE filling capacity of metal furniture, and prove very much the cheaper. Four pieces, each 42 picas long, will fill a blank space of 49 square inches, weigh but little, be almost instantly in- stalled, and prove more secure, with a minimum of pieces. Using the largest pieces, eight will fill a blank space of 12x24 inches, or 288 square inches. The few pieces required for large spaces, its security, and little liability to damage from use or corrosion, give Superior Steel Furniture advantages not possess- ed by any other material used for the purpose. QUOTATION QUADS Quotation Quads are cast on regular type-casting machines and therefore are as accurate as type. The small sizes will answer for all tabular matter, and any compositor will see at a glance their extreme usefulness. When the 18-point body Quads are used with 2-point space rule, the space between lines is 20 points; when 14-point or 16-point body Quads are used the lines are spaced 16 or 18 points. By using 1-point space rule the lines are 1 point closer. The saving of time by the use of these Quotation Quads is simply astonishing. Forms containing them are solid and true. There is no harm done if they are pied; in fact, they are distributed just as well by placing each size in a box by itself, though it is perfectly easy to keep them set up in line in a wood-type case. They require no special galley for storage, do not get off their feet, nor untrue in form because of accumulated dirt. We have sold literally tons and tons of these splendid auxiliaries, and every printer who uses them is frank in praise of their usefulness. They are very inexpensive. With a few dozen pieces of space rule and these Quotation Quads a compositor can just "cut time in three" in setting tabular matter, and an hour after the form is off the press the same quads are likely to be in a type line, or filling a panel, or used in blanking a color form, or for any other space filling. They are simply fine—equaled by nothing else for versatility and usefulness. The larger sizes are also extremely handy. The whole outfit is used in just the same manner as labor-saving metal or iron furniture, but the Quotation Quads are made in sizes smaller than the furniture. Wherever small white space is required the Quotation Quads are just the thing. Every compositor will be at them many times a week, and they will save labor every time. No matter which way the Quotation Quads are laid they are quads for some standard body. There is no other item in the print- ing world so uniquely and universally useful. The following table gives the sizes of the Quotation Quads we supply, and states the approximate number of these per pound and the approximate space a pound will cover in square inches: size in Pieces PER square size in Pieces PER square size in pieces per square size in pieces per square size in Pieces PER square size in pieces PER square Points Pound |-CHES points Pound NCHES Points Pºu-d Inches Points Pou-d Incº-Es Points pound -----> Po-Ts Pou-º -----> 14×18. . . .96 . . . . 4% 16×24. . .76. . . . . 5% 18×30. . . .54. . . . . 5% 24×36. . . .32. . . 5% 30×48. . . 19. . . . 5% 36×72. . . .11 . . . . .5% 14×24. .84. 5% 16×30 60. . .5% 18×36. 39. . . 4% 24×42. 27. . . . . 5% 30×60. 16. 5% 42×42. . . . 15. . . .51% 14×30. 69. . . . . 5%. 16×36-43. . . . 4% 18×42. . . .37. 5% 24×48. . . 24. . . . 5% 36x36. . . 21. . . 5% 42×72... 10. , 5% 14×36. 50. . . . . 4% 16×42. . . . 41. . 5% 18×48 30. . 5 24x60. . . 19. 5% 36×48. 16. 5% 48×48. 13. , 5% 14×42 .47. . . . 5% 16×48. 33. .. 5 18×60. . . .26. 5% 24×72. .18. . . . 6 36×54 - 15 . . . 5% 48×60. . . . 12 6% 14×48. . . .38. 5 18×18. . .76. . . . 4% 24×24 . . . 48 . . . 5% 30×30. 31. . . .5% 36-60. ... 14- 5-3-1 48×72. . . . 9. . . . . 6 16x18. . . .85. . . . . 4% 18×24 66. . . . 5% 24×30. 40. . . . . 5% 30×36. . . . 26. . . . 5% 36×66 12 . . . 5% . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Its lasting qualities are so much greater than that of wooden presses that it is bound to prove cheaper in the long run. The Perfection Steel Tableting Press is intended to straighten up and hold the sheets of paper while being glued. It is simple and convenient and will be found to be one of the best and handiest articles yet devised for that purpose. It will handle any number of sheets up to three thousand with equal ease. Is made sloping, so that the paper will rest alone while being adjusted. The clamp is separate from the box and is quickly arranged to take various thicknesses. Any desired pressure may be obtained by turning the screw-crank. The advisability of equipping with this Tableting Press will be apparent to the up-to-date printer. It has no clamp or screws to be operated, and is effective, rapid and thuro. Figure 1 shows the apparatus with iron base- plate in position, forming the bottom of the box, and a small pile of sheets resting on it. All trash, dust, etc., are sifted out as the sheets are put in, the two side-pieces not coming quite together, and thus leave an opening for that purpose. Figure 2 shows a pile of sheets ready for gluing. Having the sheets in the box, as shown in Figure 1, and having placed the iron brick on top of the pile, it is only necessary to take the apparatus by the handle and leg and put it in a perpendicular position. Now, con- tinuing to hold the box in a perpendicular FIG. I. position, withdraw it from under the base- FIG. 2 plate (which is made possible by the ingenious and simple arrangement of the bottom frame of the box) and the pile is left stand- ing on the base-plate, all ready for the glue-brush.
