SH2 SOUTHERN HIGHLAND SCHOOLS MAINTAINED BY DENOMINATIONAL AND INDEPENDENT AGENCIES Price 30 cents COMPILED BY OLIVE D. CAMPBELL ENT OF FOUNDA SOCIALDAND NEW YORK RUSSELL SAGE FOUNDATION, 1921 SOUTHERN HIGHLAND SCHOOLS MAINTAINED BY DENOMINATIONAL OR PRIVATE AGENCIES The following list covers, as far as information could be obtained, all school work under other than public auspices carried on in the Southern Highlands primarily for the Southern Highlanders. It has seemed best not to attempt to list so-called "community work," "mission stations," or specific religious, health, or agricultural undertakings supported by private funds, such undertakings being maintained usually by the same agencies that conduct schools and generally in connection with school centers.¹ Mention only can be made, therefore, of the very helpful service rendered to local public schools by denominational and independent boards, by the Federa- tions of Women's Clubs in some of the states, and by certain indi- viduals, through co-operation and through the supplementing of public terms and curricula by supplying, for example, a pay term when the public school term is over, courses in domestic science, manual training and music, dormitories to girls in the county high schools, etc. The difficulties in the way of listing schools that may properly be considered as mountain and private are many. In the case of cer- tain denominations, lack of centralization has seriously interfered. with securing accurate information and even with ascertaining the existence of particular schools. Where work is independent, similar difficulties have been encountered. In other cases schools have failed to supply the data requested. A number of institutions-colleges in particular, situated in the Highlands and founded originally for the Highlander-do not now receive a distinctively mountain patronage. Some, whose aim is to serve the Highlands, continue to class themselves as mountain in- stitutions, even when the majority of their students are from other sections. Others, apparently similar, do not so regard themselves. A considerable number of small schools are gradually being given over to the public school authorities, and their status, as public or private, is not clear. The list has been compiled, however, entirely on the basis of data supplied by school authorities or by the officials of boards and agencies under whose auspices the schools are maintained. Only those schools have been omitted which were returned as non- mountain or reported closed at the time data were given on account of lack of teachers or funds. ¹A notable exception is the community work maintained by the Country Church Department of the Presbyterian Church, U. S. A. 2 It will be observed that schools are listed by their denominational affiliation, even when they are directed by individuals or boards of trustees rather than by a church board. Those designated as inde- pendent have no denominational affiliation. All data which were based on information secured by John C. Campbell, Secretary of the Southern Highland Division of the Russell Sage Foundation, are here given for 1919-1920.
