Since the publication, in 1890, of the Map of the Cahaba Field, by Joseph Squire, DOWN TO THE CORE SEAM

revision of the original map, now out of print. The present sheet embodies the results i | - fee?
of these investigations up to the year 1903, in the Southeastern part of the Field. |
This area embraces several small basins separated by low anticlinals, and / Aſ ºf ' Top Seam 18 inches
nowhere has steep dips, as may be seen by the figures adjacent to some of the s
arrows showing the direction of the dip, the rate of dip being indicated by the
figures. In most of the slopes sunk upon seams within this area, the rate of dip
decreases rapidly, becoming often within a few hundred feet of the outcrop, less than
half of the rate at the outcrop.
The vertical section at the side of the map shows fifteen seams, mostly of small
size, above the Montevallo, and contained in about 1800 feet of measures.
The numbers upon the outcrops mark the locations of test pits in which the
seams have been cut, the detailed sections thus obtained being on file in the office
of the Survey; the short double lines on the outcrops mark the locations of some
of the slopes from which coal has been mined. | l . Thin 5earn
It is the intention to proceed with the examination of other parts of the field, f Upper Maylene
