This plan obviously simplifies the computation whenever the angles are given decimally; and even when the angles are not given decimally (see conversion table on opposite page), it will usually effect a saving of time. .." The first figures of the angle are given at the side of the page, and the last figure along the top. All the values of any one junction, from 0° to 90°, will be found at one opening of the book; and on every page the function increases reading forward, and decreases reading backward. The first figure of the function is expressed (in general) only in the first and last columns; a point at which the first figure changes is indicated by the sign ſ. The negative characteristics, 1, 2, etc., may be modified into 9–10, 8–10, etc., if preferred. To facilitate interpolation the “tenths of the tabular differences” are given at the end of each line in the main part of the table (as in J. M. Peirce's table of logarithms of numbers). In using these aids always find first the nearest tabular entry, and then add or subtract as the case may require; and notice that, since the tenths of the difference are directly given, the actual size of the difference itself need not be con- sidered. Thus, to find log tan 36°.87. The nearest entry in the table is log tan 369.9 =T.8755; since the given angle is three tenths of the way toward the adjacent angle on the left, the required logarithm is (approximately) three tenths of the way toward the adjacent logarithm; but by the marginal table, three tenths of this interval in 5 units in the last place; hence, the required logarithm is 1.8750 (which may also be written 0.8750 — 1, or 9.8750 – 10). Again, to find the angle a when ctn a = 1.3333. The nearest entry in the table is 1.3319 = ctn 36°.9; the given function differs from this by 14 units in the last place, which, by the marginal table, is three tenths of the way toward the adjacent function; therefore the required angle is (approximately) three tenths of the way toward the adjacent angle, and is a = 36°.87. Any interpolated value may be in error by one unit in the last place; the parts of the table where the errors of interpolation may be greater than this are indicated in the margin. Practice in ordinary interpolation without marginal aids may be obtained from the latter part of the tables of natural tangents and secants. Marginal tabs are provided throughout the table; in using them, put the thumb on the desired tab, and throw the free pages over; do not insert the fingers under these tabs. In the logarithmic part of the table, the special tabs at the upper and lower edges of the page make it possible to manipulate the table entirely with the left hand, the book lying flat on the desk; to turn forward, insert the thumb under the required tab at bottom of page; to turn backward, insert the fingers under the required tab at top of page.
