The efforts of the Papists in Spain during the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella to convert the Jews having failed, it was proposed to banish flom the kingdom all who would not embrace the Christian religion. { To avert this fate the Jews commissioned one of their body to tender a donative of 30,000 ducats toward defraying the expenses of the Moorish war. The negotiation, however, was suddenly interrupted by the Inquisitor-General, Torquemada, who burst into the apartment of the palace where the Sovereigns were giving audience to the Jewish deputy, and drawing forth a crucifix from beneath his mantle, held it up, exclaiming “Judas Iscariot sold his master for thirty pieces of silver. Your Highnesses would sell him anew for thirty thousand; here he is, take him and barter him away.” Overawed by her spiritual adviser, Isabella silenced her scruples and consented to the fatal meas- ure of proscription.— Prescott’s Ferdinand and Isabella, Vol. II., p. 125. Sombreuil appears; he is condemned. The door opens; his daughter springs forward and throwing her arms around the neck of the old man covers him with her body. She implores the assassins to spare her father or to kill her with the same blow, Touched by the sub- limity of her devotion, the fervor of her supplications, a cry of mercy arises from the mob. The pikes are lowered and the life of the father is spared to the daughter, but at a horrible price. She must abjure the aristocracy by wetting her lips from a glass filled with the blood of the murdered aristocrats. Mlle. de Sombreuil seizes the glass with an intrepid hand, carries it to her lips and drinks to the health of her father. This gesture saves him. — Lamartine's History of the Gyrondins. c. * ~~!
