PROPHETIC CHRONOLOGY --> OF DANIEL AND REVELATION. “We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelletſ, righteousness.” II. Peter iii. 13. * IPREFA CE. “For T testify unto every maz that heareth the prophecy of this Öook, if any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: and ºf any man shall £ake away from the words of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from Zhe things which are written in this book.” Revelation xxii. 18, 19. THE RULE. A general rule for computing prophetic time is given in Num- bers xiv. 34, and Ezekiel iv. 5, 6: A year for a day; except where the words years, months and days are made use of in a historical sense, is uniformly followed. THE MAN. “ Here is wisdom. Let him that hath understanding count the mumber of the beast : for it is the number of a man; and his number 2s sia, hundred three score and sia.” Rev. xiii. 18. A This number has been discovered, and proved by the celebra- ted Sir Isaac Newton, to apply to papistical Rome; and many other commentators say that 666 is applicable to many other con- spicuous persons in the history of ages past; but alas! those wri- ters, with delusive self-complacency, appear to except the words 5 5 “even now ;” that is, their own churches and times. This diver- sity of opinion amongst the learned, (of which number I have no pretensions to be,) amounts to very strong presumptive evidence that there are many antichrists ; and, we may add, shall be. . It is clear that the kingdom here spoken of “ is to be diverse from all kingdoms : and shall devour the whole earth, and shall y } **. {\) ; ; j - - *ś. & ** § a }\}. ; Ç 4. £read it down, and break it in pieces. And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and think to change times and laws : and they shall be given into his hand, until a time and times and the dividing of time.” Damiel vii. 23, 25. Begarding this verse, two questions occur: First, of what man does the prophet speak'ſ Secondly, what is meant by a time, times and the dividing of time ! ** s, First. An appeal may be made to history, whether there is any nation or kingdom on earth to which these verses apply, GX- cepting to the secular, ecclesiastical and military power of Rome. And a similar appeal may be made in reference to the king de- scribed by Daniel. Daniel viii. 25. Surely no king, himself and his successors excepted, did ever by peace destroy many. The characteristics of that king and his successors are so distinctly and minutely enumerated in Daniel and Revelation, particularly in Daniel, (xi.) that none can mistake that the Pope of Rome is the man, or type of one of the antichrists, for there are many. John, I. Epis. ii. 18. THE THOUSAND TWO HUNDRIED AND THREE SCORE DAYS. Secondly. What is the meaning of a time, times and the di- viding of time ! That those words are synonymous with a thou- sand two hundred and three score years, is clearly established by several passages. * • s 1. “ How long shall it be to the end of these wonders ? It shall - be a time, times, and an half.” Daniel xii. 6, 7. 2. “And the wo- man,” (as it hath rightly been interpreted by many, the gospel church) “fled into the wilderness,” (the world at large,) “where they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and three score days.” Rev. xii. 6. 3. “Where she is nowrished for a time, times, and half a time.” Rev. xii. 14. 4. “And I will give power unto my wit- . messes, and they shall prophecy a thousand two hundred and three score days clothed in sackcloth.” Rev. xi. 3. (Sackcloth being a sign of the lamentable state of the church and people.) “And they as- cended up to heaven ; and their enemies beheld them.” Rev. xi. 12. (The holy record gives no account of any one that so ascended— our blessed Lord and the prophet. Elijah excepted.) 5. “And they worshipped the beast, and power was given ºnto him to continue forty and two months ;” (multiplied by 30, gives 1260 days;) “and 5 it was given ºnto him ſo make war with the saints, and to overcome them : and power was given him over all kindreds, and tongues, and nations.” Rev. xiii. 4, 7. (Hence we may remark the universal- ity of antichrist.) 6. “ The holy city shall they,” (the Gentiles,) “tread under foot forty and two months,” (1260 days.) Rev. xi. 2. 7. “And he shall speak great words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and think to change times and laws ; and they shall be given into his hands, until a time, and times and the dividing of time.” Daniel vii. 25. - We now come to historical facts, affording additional and col- lateral proof, that the period of 1260 days is years: and that the symbolical king to whom power was given to continue 1260 years, did not subject himself to the designation of the beast till about the year of our Lord 250. At this period the Papacy arose. And they worshipped the beast forty and two months, i. e. 1260 years. These two periods being united fetch us down to a very glorious period, viz.: 1510—the commencement of the Pro- testant Reformation. About that period, “tidings out of the east and out of the north shall trouble him; therefore he shall go forth with great fury to de- stroy and utterly to make away many.” Daniel xi. 44. “And I saw a beast and one of his heads as it were wounded to death,” (without any doubt, by the Reformation.) Rev. xiii. 2, 3, 12. THE SEVENTY WEEKS OR 1290 DAYS. (c.) “As long as the land lay desolate she kept sabbath, to fulfil three score and ten years.” II. Chron. xxxvi, 21. “And this whole land shall be a desolazion, and an astonishment ; and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.” Jer. xxv. 11. “After seventy years be accomplished at Babylon, I will visit you, and per- form my good word toward you, in causing you to return to this place.” Jer. xxix. 10. Days. Daniel ix. 23–27. “Seventy weeks are determined up- 490 on thy people, and upon thy holy city. Thou art greatly - beloved; therefore understand the matter. Know therefore and understand, that from the going Jorth of the command- ment, (Ezra i. 1–4,) to restore and to build Jerusalem, ºn- to the Messiah the Prince, shall be seven weeks, and three Carried forward, 490 - * Brought forward, 490 score and two weeks,” (d) equal 69 weeks, 483 “And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week,” 7 - - - —490 “And after” [Those] “three score and two weeks shall Mes- = siah be cut off.” 434 “And after” [THose] “seven weeks and in the midst of the” [THAT] “week,” the SEVENTIETH, equal 7 1-2 weeks, 52. “We shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease.” — Being half a week less than 70 weeks, the time determin- 486; ed upon thy people. - “The perpetual sacrifice did cease A. D. 73,” which, de- ducted from this year, 1846, leaves 1773 to be added, 1773 Josephus Bel, lib. 4, c. 7. - 2259; THE THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED AND FIVE AND THIRTY DAYS. T)aniel xii. 12. “Blessed is he that waitetſ, and cometſ, to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.” The difference between this number and the former, 1290, being added, viz: 45 Gives 4 1-2 years more than the number which is fore- 2304; told in the prophecy that follows; but if we deduct the half week, 3; there will only be one year of difference. 2301 THE TWO THOUSAND THREE HUNDRED DAYS. From Daniel viii. 9–14, it is certain that the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the transgression of desolation was set up contemporaneously: and that the little horn did perpetrate these enormities—crimes that have no parallel in this world. But praise and glory to the Almighty—“the beast shall come to his end and none shall help him.” Dan. xi. 45. And that end may ar- rive even before the sanctuary is cleansed, in the year of our Sa- viour, 2300. Thy kingdom come—Hasten the time for Christ's sake.—Amen. Daniel viii. 13, 14. “ Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said ºnto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden 7 wºnder foot 2 and he said ºnto me, ºnto two thousand and three hun- dred days ; (2300 A.D.) then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.” (g) THE PROSPEROUS STATE, VAIN EFFORTS AND FALL OF THE LITTLE HORN. (e) “The great horn was broken and for it came up four notable ones, towards the foãr winds of heaven. And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed eaceeding great towards the south, and towards the east, and towards the pleasant land. And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven ; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. Yea, he magnifted himself even to the prince of the host, and by him. the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. And an host was given him against the daily sacri- fice by Yeason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practised, and prospered.” Daniel viii. 8–12. “And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that wor- shipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with örimstone. And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth : and all the fowls were filled with their flesh. Rev. xix. 19 —21. “As concerning the rest of the beasts, they had their domin- ion taken away : yet their lives were prolonged for a season and time.” T)aniel vii. 12. But the Pope continued unchecked in his full power, pride and arrogancy for 1260 years; and that, by the Reformation of the sixteenth century, his dominion was wounded, are facts that do not admit of dispute. These facts seem to be referred to in Re- velation xiii. 11: * And I beheld another beast coming up out of “the earth; [we suppose Mahomet] and he had two horns like a “lamb, and he spake as a dragon. And he exerciseth all the pow- “er of the first beast before him, and causeth the earth, and them “that dwell therein to worship the first beast whose deadly wound “was healed.” See also Rev. xix. 20. Notice, he is called the false prophet, perhaps because he says that he is greater than Moses. The first beast was in point of time before this other beast. Also, S we are not informed of any other beast whose deadly wound was healed, excepting that of the first beast—the little horn. And that his wound has been healed, there is too much daily proof. Prior to his wound, kings held his stirrups: now, his Holiness, as he has been called by his blind followers, only sits on the crup- per; but, nevertheless, by secret means, “ and through his policy “ also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand : and he shall “magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many : “he shall stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be “broken without hand.” Daniel viii. 25. However, by those base practices, and in spite of his humble posture, he still continues to direct the reins of the protestant and other kings that ostensibly occupy the saddle. In proof of this assertion, we may appeal to the general religious and political aspect of the world. Papists increase in number every where; and the power and influence of their master continues to grieve the enlightened christian. But he shall be broken without hand, [the hand of man.] A few months ago we observed from a newspaper, that fourteen graduates, or Fellows of the College of Oxford, in protestant England, had embraced Popery and, that Puseyism, the Eng- lish edition of Roman Catholicism, is fashionable!! A few days since, the following notice was observed in the New York Evan- gelist newspaper, under the column of foreign news : “It was rumored that the British Government had opened a negotiation with the Pope for the purpose of connecting the Irish Catholic church with the State, either by making a provision for the clergy, or by obtaining a concordat giving the crown the nomination of the prelates.” Here we see, probably by the operation of O'Con- nel's agitation, one of the great and notable horns opening a ne- gotiation and courting a compromise with the little horn || Also, the most enlightened portion of the American public candidly ac- knowledge, that the adherents of his Holiness do exercise in the Union a power sufficient to control their Government. And this probably is the situation of all the nations of christendom. This increase of influence through subtlety and craft, is, without doubt, an approximation to that zenith of power, which is announced by the prophet in these words: “And he shall plant the tabernacles “of his palaces between the seas in the glorious holy mountain : “yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.” Daniel xi. 45. $) THE POPE AND HIS PALACES. There are two things in that passage of Daniel that may re- quire some remarks, namely, the seas. and the holy mountain ; both of which will, as a necessary consequence, be in existence at the time of cleansing the sanctuary, A. D. 2300; at which epoch antichrist shall come to his end. . First-Of thé glorious holy mountain.” “ The wolf and the “lamb shall feed togeth er, and the lion shall eat straw like the bul- “lock: and dust shall be the serpent's meat. They shall not hurt “nor destroy in all my holy mountain, saith the Lord.” Isaiah lxv. 25. “J erusalem shall be called a city of truth, and the moun- “ tain of the Lord, The holy mountain.” Zechariah viii. 3. The circumstances and descriptions given in the precedin g verses, can be clearly shown from scripture to refer to “the new & 4 heavens and the new earth whereih dwelleth righteousness.” 2d Reter, iii. 13. Thence we see, that it is not on this earth in its present condition that the beast is to come to its end. * - Lastly, he (antichrist) is to plant the tabernacles of his palaces between the seas in the glorious holy mountain. In order to Ull] - derstand the import of the words “between the seas,” it may be necessary to premise; briefly, that there is found in the Bible a description of three earths. On the first, the one we now inha- bit, bounds are set to the waters of the sea, which fact we know from the word of God, and by our daily experience: on the se cond or new earth, there are to be streams and rivers of water on the mountains, Isaiah xxx. 25; and on the third earth; which John saw, Rev. xxi. 1, there was no more sea. . - - It is the new or second earth only that we are called upon at present to notice. The point to be proved from the scriptures literally explained is, that sea water is to be in rivers and streams on the second or that new earth which Peter looked for. 2d Pe- ter, iii. 13. “ And there shall be up on every high mountain and tº every high hill rivers and streams of waters.” Isaiah xxx. 25. “Seek him that calleth for the waters of the sea, and poureth “them out upon the faces of the earth; The Lord is the same.” Amos v. S. “In the habitation of dragons, where each lay, shall “be grass with reëds and rushes.” Isaiah xxxv. G. “They shall “suck of the abundance of the seas.” Deut. xxxiii. 16. - “And “the rivers of Judah shall flow with waters, and a fountain shall & X rºl 10 “come forth of the house of the Lord, and shall water the valley “of Shittim.” Joel iii. 18. Zech. xiv. 4–8. (b) * Many more references might be given on this subject, but it is supposed that those may suffice. It is next necessary to prove that those waters are to be sea waters. For brevity, a reference is here made to chapter xlvii of Ezekiel. The same waters are spoken of by Isaiah, Joel, Zechariah, and other prophets. In that chapter of Ezekiel, the reader will find the following expres- sions: “And it shall come to pass, that every thing that liveth “which moveth whithersoever the waters shall come, shall live; “and there shall be a very great multitude of fish, because these “waters shall come thither: and every thing shall live whither the “rivers cometh. Their fish shall be according to their kinds, as the 2: , “fish of the great sea, exceeding many.” Now, it is evident that sea-fish would not live in fresh water, therefore it is sea water that is to be on the fields and mountains; and this should be a satisfactory explanation of the prophecy of the beast planting the tabernacles of his palaces between the rivers and streams of sea waters in the glorious holy mountain. As human science will be entirely adequate to effect this new situation of the wa- ters of the sea, no miracle may be expected, nor is any promised for its fulfilment. On this subject there are other two questions that will present themselves to the reader, namely, What assu- rance have we that it is the new earth on which those waters shall be thrown And, when Answers to these questions would lead us into a much wider field than that now pro- posed : therefore, for information on those important matters, the author must refer the reader to many scripture quotations in his comparatively larger work on Prophecy. Whether those waters referred to by the Prophets shall be fresh or salt, is not very im- portant. It is as easy practically to locate on the fields the one as the other; and the words seas and rivers are applicable in scripture language to either. When that prophecy shall be ful- filled by human power, death from drought, and flood, its two principal causes, at least in Asia, will, in all likelihood, be there unknown. _* - **. APPEAL. S He that shall do my will, saith the Lord, shall know whether it be of God or of men. - The result anticipated in the preceding title, though entirely in 11 accordance with the beneficent dispensations of Jehovah, will, nevertheless, be very inferior in its importance to those moral and religious blessings which may be certainly predicted as the ac- companiment of the fulfilment of Isaiah xxx. 25. It is not improbable that the favored people of God—the Jews —may be the first to realize the good promised by the prophets, in whom they profess to believe. But it is open to all. In the progressive execution of the work referred to, two re- markable occurrences will ensue; namely: immediate relief to the poor in the vicinity of the operations; and the almost imme- diate compensation that capitalists will receive for their expendi- ture, and a hundred fold at the termination. Those two occur- rences will be received by believers as signs that God is the * author. -- NOTE S. (b) These verses in Zech. do apparently refer to Job xxviii. 7, 8,9, 10, 11; xxxvii. 10; xxxviii. 25. The very great valley formed by the cleaving of the mount of Olives, will make way for the waters east to the valley of Shittim. These waters are to flow in summer and in winter. Zech. xiv. 8. Fresh waters would be congeal- ed by frost in winter; therefore it is inferred that salt water is that spoken of by the Prophet. - g (c) Immediately prior to the commencement of the seventy weeks, a period of similar tribulation was experienced by the Israelites during the reign of 22 kings ; and their punishments during that period and the seventy weeks, did probably ori- ginate from the same cause—idolatry and disobedience to their heavenly Father.— Contrary to the remonstrances of the holy and righteous Samuel, they said, “Give us a king to judge us. And the Lord said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thce: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rojected me that I should not reign over them.” I. Samuel viii. 5, 6, 7. After ha- ving complied, Samuel concludes by this emphatic prophecy: “But if he shall do wickedly, ye shall be consumed both ye and your king.” I. Samuel xii. 25, which has been fulfilled to the very letter. From the first king of Judah, Saul, to the last, Zedekiah, there were in all 22 kings, inclusive. The great majority of these were wicked and idolatrous kings. Their aggregate reigns, including the six years usurpation of Athaliah, amounted to 514 years and ten days. But if the reign of David, who was a man after God's own sº 12 heart, be deducted, it will leave 473 years 6 months and 10 days—within a very few years of 490. • . . . . . . r - Whether the multitude of kings which have been over the nations since Zedekiah, have been better or worse than their predecessors, Omniscience will judge. One thing is sure: “And I, John, saw the beast, and the kings of the earth and their ar- mies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.” Rev. xix. 19. - - - - " . . (d) The reason why Calmet, Hales, and other commentators, have stated this number, some at 544, and others at 536, is difficult to learn. And it is equally dif- ficult to guess why, as affirmed by Jarchi, the Hebrews believed that the Messiah was born on the day of the last destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans. Calmet v. Christ. . . . . . . . - • . (e) The beast is called a little horn, Daniel viii. 9; probably from the circumstance that the Popedom is only an inferior military power. - (g) Every church on earth ought to be aware, that neither the saint nor the pro- phet have made any distinction between Jew or Gentile, Papist or Protestant. ... All churches are lying under sin: and to whom much is given, of them much will be re- quired. May the Lord save us in the day of thick darkness for Christ's sake. Amen.
