PONTIAC PUBLIC SiOOLS.

HE Public Schools of Pontiac are organized upon a course of study ex-
tending over twelve years. For convenience of classification and exam-
ination, each year is divided into two terms of twenty weeks each. Each
year of the course is called a grade. The twelve years of the course are set
off in three groups of four years each, which constitute respectively, the
Primary, the Grammar, and the High School Departments.
PROMOTION.
Pupils are regularly promoted by classes when they have completed the
work of each grade as it is prescribed in the course of study, but individual
pupils are transferred to higher or lower grades at any time when it becomes
evident that their scholarship will be subserved by the change.
*RADMISSION,
Those desiring admission to the grades of the city schools will be requir-
ed to undergo such an examination only as will enable the Superintendent
to decide in what grade they are prepared to do the best work. When classi-
fied pupils are required to do thoroughly the work of the grade to which
they are admitted. • .
Pupils coming from the graded schools of good standing in the state may
be admitted on certificates of grade and standing in the schools from which
they come. •
ENTERING SC, PAOOL,
Pupils in all the departments of the schools should be present at the
opening of the school year, for at that time classes are formed and new stud-
ies begun; and it is not only very desirable, but quite necessary that pupils
begin with their classes.
Beginning classes in the First Primary are organized only at the open-
ing of the year in September, and at the opening of the Spring term in April;
therefore, if pupils becoming of school age, and desiring to enter later in the
year, are not prepared to enter classes already formed, they cannot be accom-
modated with profit to themselves or the school, and the good judgment of
parents will at once enable them to see the wisdom of not sending the little
ones until a new class is formed. .
As a rule our little ones are sent to school too young. The children that
are carefully nurtured at home until the age of six or seven more often than
otherwise, overtake and pass their fellow pupils who enter school one or two
years before.
SESSIONS.
The sessions of the schools are from 8:45 to 12:00 a.m., and 1:30 to 3:30
p.m., with a recess from 1030 to 10:45 a. m. Two bells precede each session.
In the morning the warning bell rings from 8:15 to 8:20, and the last bell from
8:40 to 8:45. In the afternoon the first bell rings from 1:05 to 1:10, and the
last from 1:25 to 1:30. All pupils not in their seats at the close of the ring-
ing of the last bell, will be marked tardy. This rule will be strictly adhered to.
TOIITION.
Pupils whose parents or guardians live outside the district limits are
subject to tuition, which is charged per term in advance, as follows:

Tuition bills are made out for the whole term on the first day of attend-
ance, when they must be paid, and in no case will any deduction be made
except for protracted illness.
Under the law of 1874 non-resident pupils whose parents present a re-
ceipt from the collector, showing that they pay a school tax in the city, will
have that amount deducted from their tuition.
THAE HAIGHA SCHOOL.
HE High School presents five courses of studies: The Classical, the Lat-
in, the Scientific and the English are to meet the requirements of the
University, and other institutions of learning. The High School has,
for a quarter of a century, ranked as one of the best preparatory schools in
the state, and students completing any of the above courses are admitted to
corresponding courses in the University without examination.

The Commercial Course is intended to meet the needs of those who wish
to prepare for a commercial or business life. It aims to give practical and
thorough instruction in the best actual business methods, and at the same
time not to lose sight of the demands of a good English education. The
course of study consists of Book-keeping by single and double entry, Pen-
manship, Business Forms, (Notes. Drafts, Deeds, Mortgages, Etc.) Commer-
cial Law, Civil Government, and Common English Branches. No text-books
will be used in teaching Book-keeping, and no fictitious transactions allowed.
The aim will be to carry on business among the students the same as it is car-
ried on among merchants in the outside business world. ... The requirements
for admission to this course are the same as for entering the High School.
*AD/AISSION.
Applicants for admission to the High School should be prepared for ex-
amination in Practical Arithmetic, English Grammar, Geography, U. S. His-
tory, Reading and Spelling. Candidates for advanced standing, who do not
come from some other High School or Academy, will be examined in those
studies with which tiley wish to be credited in advance. Those pupils found
not prepared to enter the High School will be classified according to their
advancement, and placed in the Grammar Department where the course of
study is strong, practical, quite complete in itself, and if thoroughly master-
ed will furnish a good, practical, English education. Entrance examinations
are not rigid, being intended simply to ascertain at what point in the course
candidates can most advantageously enter.
THAE LIBRYRARY.
A well selected library of nearly 2,000 volumes, with a printed catalogue,
is open for the benefit of the school. The session rooms are quite well pro-
vided with books of reference, and reading tables with the best magazines and
periodicals. The library is made an important adjunct of the school in its
regular work, especially in studies in history, the sciences and literature.
OBSERVI EATIONS.
1. Daily work in the study and reading of the best English and American
classics, with reproduction and composition work, is required of all pupils
in the High School. The benefit to be derived from such work can hardly
be overestimated.
2. Rhetorical work, consisting of Declamations, Debates, Essays and
Orations, is requred, periodically, of all pupils.
3. We have no regular system of reporting to parents the standing of
pupils in scholarship and deportment, but we are always ready to answer in-
quiry concerning them. However, if a pupil's work fails to be satisfactory
for a number of successive days or weeks, notice thereof will be Sent to the
parent or guardian.

WORKING REGULATION,
1. Except by regular promotion, teachers may receive pupils to, or ex-
cuse them from, classes, or permit them to take up or drop a study, only on
reception of a written permission, signed by the superintendent and session-
teacher.
2. Teachers must report to session-teachers daily all cases of absence
and tardiness in their respective classes. -
No pupil shall be admitted to class after absence without a written
permission from the session-teacher.
4. On marking pupils “left” for any cause, the session-teachers must
notify all teachers of the same, and teachers must continue to report absence
against a pupil until such notice is recieved. Notice must also be sent to
the parent or guardian, if the cause of absence is unknown
Written examinations in all subjects will be held on Friday at the
end of each five weeks of school. Pupils whose average daily standing in all
studies is eighty per cent or above will be excused. Others will be exam-
ined in all of their studies. -
6. Absence from any regular recitation or examination is marked zero;
but the lost recitation or examination may be made up when (and only when)
an excuse is presented, accepted and signed by the session-teacher. The ses-
sion-teacher will accept and sign such excuse only when satisfied that the
absence was caused by the pupil’s illness, or illness in the family. The lost
recitation or examination must be made up within two weeks and also before
the regular examination, otherwise the pupil will be required to report for
examination. -
7. Eighty per cent is regarded as a standard for passing studies seventy
per cent entitles a pupil to continue a study; a lower standing may subject
a pupil to re-classification.
8. Teachers must report at the monthly Teachers' Meeting all pupils
whose yease standing, for the month preceding, has been below seventy
per cen
9. No pupil in the High School will be allowed to pursue more than
three studies (four including daily English) at the same time, unless permis-
sion be obtained by written application to the superintendent and teachers.
Selections from the Rules of the Board.
Part IV — Pupils.
Anttic LE 1. The Public Schools have been established for the benefit of
the community generally, and all resident pupils from five to twenty years of
age shall be admitted and advanced from grade to grade, on the ground of
merit and proficiency only.
ART. 2. Pupils are required to attend the schools in the district to
which they may be assigned, and in no case shall a pupil go from one school
to another, after having been registered, without permission in writing from
the Superintendent.
ART. 3. All pupils are required to walk quietly and in single file through
the halls and up and down stairs, and not to remain or converse at any time
in the halls or stairways; to make no loud noise in any part of the building,
and not to go at any time into rooms belonging to other departments without
permission from their teacher.
ART. 4. Pupils are required to be punctual and regular in attendance;
to devote their time exclusively to the proper studies of the school room; to
occupy such seats as the teacher may assign; and to enter such department,

ART. 5. Pupils not in their seats at the opening of the forenoon or after-
noon session of school shall be marked tardy, and any pupil thus tardy shall
be suitably warned and reported to his parents and if not satisfactorily ex-
plained, shall be suspended from school until his parents or guardian give
assurance that the irregularity will be corrected. .
ART. 6. Any pupil who shall be absent from school four half days in
any four consecutive weeks without a satisfactory excuse from parent or
guardian, either in person or by note, shall forfeit his or her seat in school.
Pupils thus forfeiting their seats shall not be restored until the parent or
guardian shall satisfy the Superintendent that said pupils will be punctual
in the future, and obtain from him a written permission for their return.
ART. 7. The mere statement that the parent has kept the pupil at home
shall not be accepted by the teacher as an excuse for absence or tardiness,
and unless it shall appear that sickness, or some other urgent reason, has
caused the tardiness or absence, the excuse shall not be accepted.
ART. 8. Pupils who shall be guilty of marking, scratching, or in any
way defacing or injuring any of the school property whatever, shall pay in
full for all damages, or in default shall be suspended from school, and be
admitted only by permission of the Board.
ARt. 9. For open disobedience and insubordination, or for using pro-
fane or improper language, on or about the school premises, or immoral or
vicious conduct, or habitual disregard of duty, or for any other sufficient
cause, rendering the pupil an unfit member of the school, the teacher thereof
may suspend such pupil. -
ART. 10. All pupils on entering school must procure the required books
and pursue the gours: of study prescribed for th: class to which§hey belong.

ART. 18. The use of tobacco in any form in any school building or on
the school grounds is prohibited. -
