Explanations and Directions. Four parallel courses, equivalent in units of work, are offered for the pupil’s choice. Pupils on entering the school must select one of these courses. Changes from one course to another may be made on the request of the parent, approved by the Principal and Superintendent. The purpose of this course of study is to meet the needs of all classes of pupils who enter the High School; both those who intend to complete their school work in the High School, and those who intend to continue their work in colleges. Choice of Courses. English and History are required in each course offered, and throughout each year of the course. The same work in Mathematics is required in all courses in the first and second years. Music is required of all pupils in the school, but does not count toward credits for graduation. Parents are requested to make careful choice of the course of study they desire their children to pursue. It is expected that pupils will continue in the course thus selected throughout their High School work. But, if parents should desire a change of course for a pupil, such change may be granted for reasons satisfactory to the Principal and Superin- tendent, upon presentation of a written request from the parents. Pupils desiring a course without Ancient or Modern lang- uages should select the English-Scientific. Pupils wishing to prepare for the Classical course in col- lege should select the Classical-Scientific Course. In the Junior year of this course electives are offered in Greek and Science. The subject chosen at this time must be continued throughout both the Junior and Senior years. Pupils who desire to prepare for Literary or Philosophi- 1a1 courses in college should elect the Literary-Scientific course. In the Junior year of this course a choice is offered between French and Science. As in the Classical-Scientific 8 Course, so in this, the subject elected must be continued throughout the two years. Students intending, on completing their High School work, to engage in business pursuits, or to enter Colleges offering advanced Commercia1 courses, should take the Commercial Course. The elective (German or French), chosen in the Jun- ior year of this course, must be continued throughout the Senior year. Adjustment of Pupils to New Courses of Study. Work completed by pupils under the old course of study will be given full credit under the new ; that is, pupils who have finished any year of work in the old course will at once enter upon the work of the next higher year in the new, sub- ject to the following adjustments. Sophomores, having had General Geology and Physical Geography last year, will this year take Botany in place thereof. All other work prescribed in new courses will be re- quired as set forth. Juniors, having had Civics and having had a part of Plane Geometry, will continue and complete Plane Geometry in the first half of the year. The second half will be given to the study of Economics. Seniors, having already had Physics, may elect General History which will be offered this year specially for them, or Chemistry with the Junior class. Seniors, having also had Higher Algebra and Solid Geometry, if they prefer, may elect both General History and Chemistry. Senior Grammar and Senior Arithmetic are required only of the English-Scientific students, but it is suggested that Classical-Scientific and Literary-Scientific students, intending to prepare for teaching, elect these subjects. Requirements for Graduation. A total of eighty credits, or eighty units of work, is re- quired for graduation. A unit of work, or a credit, is one hour's work per week for one year. Hence, a pupil, reciting five times per week for one year in one subject, will obtain 9 five credits for that work, and twenty credits for the full work of any year. As stated elsewhere Music does not count to- ward this total of eighty required credits. Rule for Promotion. “Pupils of the High School, completing the work of any year with an average grade of seventy-five per cent., and not falling below sixty per cent in any branch of study, shall be regularly promoted to the next higher class.” This rule means that if a pup11 fails in any one subject of his year’s work he must take that subject again and must be passed in it before he can be admitted to the same subject, or to the corresponding work, of the next higher year. That is, the pupil may be advanced with his class in a11 subjects ex- cept the one in which failure occurs. Should a pupil fail in two or more studies, or fail to make the yearly average re- quired, he must remain in the same grade, but may take work with the next higher class in place of those subjects in which he has passed. Opportunities Offered Former Graduates. Former graduates of the High School, desiring to do fur- ther work necessary for admission to college or for other pur- poses, will be permitted to select any subjects in the different courses, for which their previous work may have prepared them, and a graduate in one course may receive a diploma in a second upon completing all work required in this course. But no graduate shall be permitted to contest a second time for honors The pupil’s daily program will consist of four recitations and three study periods, in addition to such general exercises as may be provided for all the school. >{< >{< >{< >{< >{< >{< >{< >{< >{< The Principal will be at his office in the High School building during the week beginning September 7th, from 8 to to 9 o'clock A. M., and from 4 to 5 o'clock P. M., to confer with parents or pupils in regard to the selection of courses of study, or arrangement of daily program. IO
