The Chicago Homoeopathic Medical Society was organized April 2d, 1857.
Its Membership numbers seventeen Homoeopathic Physicians, residents of this
City; its Meetings are held once in a fortnight, at which Essays or Reports of
Cases from Practice are regularly presented. These papers are placed on file
of the Society, and it is from them that the undersigned has selected the
matter for this issue, itself simply a reprint from the First Vol. of the AMERICAN

WITH the student of Homoeopathic Medical Literature, there is no want
more keenly felt, than such as might be abundantly supplied by a punctual
and practical rendering of the Transactions of our various medical organiza-
tions. The tyro in medicine seeks for such information as among its classics;
and the tried practitioner not less, that he may sift the sweets of a multiplied.
experience to corroborate his own, to his individual edification, and to the
practical advantage of his patients. - .
I—The first paper claiming notice is from the pen of Dr. G. E. Shipman,
being his report as a Special Committee upon the question, “Are applications
of cold or warm water preferable in Acute Hydrocephalus?” We copy:
“The story of a certain Prince of Wales, and his query to the Royal Society,
is a good, if not a true one; and I might find myself in the position of the
Royal Society, should I attempt to settle the question proposed to-night without
establishing the truth that either cold or warm water is useful when externally
applied in case of Acute Hydrocephalus. As for my own opinion, my experi-
ence in this disease, previous to the last meeting, has not been sufficient to
enable me to decide positively that either cold or warm applications are de-
cidedly useful, and since the same meeting I am still unable to, satisfy my-
self upon the subject. . - .
“The few writers whom I have been able to consult do not settle the ques-
tion at all. TESTE denies the virtue of either cold or warm applications,
while PULTE says that the water must be in a stream poured constantly upon
the head for hours together. In the cases under Homoeopathic treatment, pub-
lished prior to 1837, little or no mention is made of water by any of the
writers. To come to more recent times, the only case which I remember to
have seen, in which water was a prominent part of the treatment, was a case
reported by Dr. Footº of Galesburg, Ill., and published in the North-Western
Journal of Homoeopathy, vol. 4, p. 144. He used hot water, but this suggests
another inquiry, What is hot and what is cold water 7 and this again another:
What is the difference between very hot and very cold water? or to be more
exact, Wherein would the effect of water, at a temperature of 200° Fahrenheit,
when applied to the skin, differ from that of water at a temperature of
30° below zero 7. The sense of feeling would not discriminate between
them—both would alike disorganize the tissues. -
“Now, suppose we go down the scale from 200°, and up from 30° below
zero; at what point will there be a difference perceptible by the sense of feel-
ing or otherwise? " * * * * * - - . -
“There is still another inquiry which is quite pertinent, Granting that
water, either hot or cold, is useful in the treatment of Hydrocephalus—How

does it act By constringing the capillaries, and thus driving the blood from
the surface?. If so, How far can water drive the blood from the capillaries,
and where does it drive the blood to ? Is it any better for the patient to have
the blood where it is driven to than where it was driven from? Or, is water
of use by promoting evaporation from the capillaries, and thus relieving them
of their turgidity, and hence diminishing the pressure on the parts? But, if
evaporation from the capillaries does take place, is it not the watery part of
the blood which evaporates, leaving the residuum more dense than ever—
hence the capillaries more clogged—hence the pressure on the parts greater
than before? -
Dr. BoARDMAN thought cold water almost always useful in local inflamma-
tions. During the first stages he prefers the cold, but in subsequent ones
sometimes uses warm applications.
Dr. SEYMOUR has, of late years, given the preference to warm water in Hy-
drocephalus—thinks it the most soothing.
Dr. SHIPMAN.—Hot water will constringe as well as cold. - *-
Dr. BoARDMAN.—The secondary effect of warm water, as well as of cold, is .
to produce contraction of the capillaries, - -
Dr. SEYMOUR.—The benefit of water locally, warm or cold, must come
from or by evaporation. With warm spongings, this process is greatly facili-
tated, and made to be a better means than the use of cold.
II.-ON DOSES–Posology—From an Essay upon this subject, by Dr. H. PER-
ABEAU, we extract the following item, as bearing upon the theory of the ex-
treme dynamization of drugs: - . . . -
“Let us look for example at the preparation of gunpowder.” Three in-
gredients—sulphur, saltpetre and charcoal, are mixed during three hours. In
that condition it has the power of throwing a ball to a distance. If mixed
and rubbed during four hours, the power thereof is much greater; and, after
five hours rubbing, still greater; but if it has been rubbed six hours, the
powder has attained its highest degree of explosiveness, and is too dangerous
to use for pieces of ordinance. But, from this point, upward, viz: the seventh,
eighth, and ninth hourly preparation of gunpowder, its power diminishes in the
same degree as it was augmented from the third hourly preparation upward.
The subjoined cases from the Doctor's practice illustrate his views:
(a.) A lady suffering under the combined effects of Quinine and Intermit-
tent Fever, lost her patience with the old-school system, and called in an old
and experienced Homoeopathic physician, who treated her for several months
with the infinitesimals, but with no good result. She finally sank so low that
her life was despaired of, at which stage I was called in. I found her unable
to sit up, with yellow complexion and no appetite; vomiting occurred every
morning, and, when I saw her, she vomited large pieces of fried ham (her
physician allowed her anything she liked to eat). Ipecac had been tried in
small doses. I gave her at once drop-doses of the Mother Tincture of Ipecac.
On the following day she had only a slight attack of vomiting, and on the next
no such thing occurred. I now prescribed a generous diet, and in about two

weeks more, she was able to take short walks out of doors. In consideration
of her symptoms and of the quantity of Quinine formerly taken, was I not jus-
tified in employing larger doses where the smaller ones had entirely failed? -
(6.) Another case occurred, in a person afflicted with Neuralgia facialis and
tooth-ache, brought on by cold. Before coming to me, he consulted several
Allopathic physicians, who blistered him, dosed him, etc. He, however, grew
rapidly worse, and finally sought my advice. I let him smell the tincture of
Chamomilla vulgaris, on the afflicted side, and, in about a minute, he felt relieved.
Another inhalation entirely cured him from his trouble, which had lasted about
a week, and was very troublesome and severe. I had found Cham, in similar
cases of tooth ache, aggravated by cold wind or weather, always quickly benefi-
cial. Would an olfaction of the decillionth of this remedy have the same result
as of the tincture? - -
III.-DYSPEPsia, Case reported by Dr. F. A. SUMNER: -
Mr. O. B–, ast. 48, with light blue eyes, red hair, spare, wiry frame and
nervous temperament, has been the subject of one of the multiſarious forms of
Dyspepsia for more than two years, and incapable of pursuing his business for
that length of time. He is a shoe-maker by trade; never worked much on
the bench ; was generally employed in cutting and superintending in his estab-
lishment. - -
Symptoms, April 15, 1857–Appetite good; light brown and yellow coat on
the tongue, which is moist, nasty, sometimes with bitter taste in the morning.
Tenderness on pressure at cardiac end of the stomach, extending quite down
under the short ribs on the left side in the direction of the colon. Bowels
habitually costive, and as habitually moved by what he supposes to be Vegetable
Cathartic pills, followed invariably, the second day after, by head-ache.
Stools dark-colored, dry and hard. Slight, dull, dragging, heavy pain at
times in 1ight hypochondrium. Hypochondriasis. Skin dry and cold—
especially of hands and feet. Pulse 72, rather languid, but in other respects
normal. - . . . -
Treatment.—Prescribed Wuz Womica 6 every other night, to be followed by Sul.
6 the following morning. He is to take such exercise in the open air as his
strength and the weather will permit. Dry friction to the trunk and extremities
for five minutes every morning, while the weather continues cool, and to substi-
tute lukewarm or cold sponge-bathing with brisk rubbing when the weather
becomes sufficiently warm to make the change. *
April 20,—No change. Patient is fearful his bowels will grow up. Gave
Cham. 6 every other night, - - --~
April 29–Better, Wur vom. and Sulph. continued with Opium 6. ... .
May 4.—Medicine discontinued until the 10th. Tongue heavily-coated. Yellow
at the roots, pale at the edges, moist throughout, with bitter taste.
May 15th–Bowels not acting satisfactorily; three globules Sulph. were pre-
scribed every other morning. - ... 3 -
One week after (31st), from an error in diet—probably eating a few bits of
fresh pork; fatty rising ensued. Pulsatilla met the emergency. *
June 9th–All medicine suspended, and half a pint of cold water recom-
mended night and morning. ! -

18th.--Symptoms aggravated since the 14th–probably in consequence of error
in diet; eructations; sinking and tenderness at pit of the stomach, extending to
the left hypochondrium. Resume Sulph. 6. - -
23d.-Bowels torpid, from a cold probably. One globule of Bryonia 6 every
other morning brought them into a soluble state, and relieved the remaining ab-
dominal disturbance.
29th.-Improving. Lycopodium 6 every forty-eight hours.
July 11th.-Patient complains of more head-ache recently—such as formerly
followed his Allopathic cathartics—-than for two-and-a-half months, or even since
the Homoeopathic treatment was commenced. Same medicine.
18th-Patient has violent head-ache, accompanied with pains in the back and
limbs, slight chills and feverishness. Pulse but little accelerated. A dose of
Aconite 6 repeated in three hours, entirely relieved him. .
Sunday, August 2–Patient attacked with one of his old-fashioned head-aches
(Hemierania), accompanied with diarrhaea, such as he has not had for nearly three
years, - -
Sunday, 9th-Head-ache after eating fatham." Sepia 3 repeated in four hours.
‘Head-ache subsided. Diarrhaea, six or eight discharges, followed through the
day, and also subsided. -
August 20th-Looks bright, and is apparently quite well. Is afraid of cold
water externally and internally, although he has worn quite faithfully, since
the weather became warm, a swathe of crash (two thicknesses), wet around the
bowels and chest. Bowels, bladder, and, in short, all the abdominal organs are
getting into quite a normal condition,
29th.-Less free in the bowels for the past week, in consequence of using more
flour bread and less fresh vegetables and fruit for several weeks past. Ordered
coarser bread, less meat, and more vegetable diet. Wuz vom. 6 every other night
soon restored the functions of the stomach and bowels to a better state than for
many years. -
The patient tells me he has not gone through a week for fifteen or twenty
years without taking Calomel, Rhubarb, or Vegetable Cathartic Pills, until the
adoption of the Homoeopathic treatment. Muz won. has appeared to effect more
than any other remedy in this very obstinate case.
May, 1858–From the last date (August 29, 1857), this patient has been im-
proving; for the most part without medicine; but with care in regard to regimen
and ‘exercise, until his weight had increased fifteen pounds above that of the
last three years, while his strength, countenance, and spirits are of course much
improved.
IV.-Endemic Neuralgia. Reported by Dr. LUDLAM.
J. E. A.—, merchant, aet. 36, of sanguino-bilious temperament, sent for me
at 5 A.M. on January 25, 1858. Found him suffering from an attack of Gas-
tralgia, Supervening upon perfect health, and accompanied by nausea, with oc
casional vomiting. An excruciating pain in the Scorbiculis Cordis, twisting,
wrenching, “as if the parts were in a vice,” shooting occasionally into the
abdomen. No constitutional disturbance; nothing to complain of save the
severity of the pains. No chill, neither fever. Prescribed Wux wom. 2; once
in half an hour, until the paroxysm subsides. Cloths dipped in warm water

to be repeatedly applied over the pain. 4 P.M.–saw my patient again ; is
perfectly easy and comfortable since 11 A. M.; has a good appetite; desires
hearty food. Continued same prescription with intervals of two hours. Or-
dered toast or crackers and tea, but proscribed an animal diet.
Jan. 26th, second day.-Messenger came for me at the same early hour.
Mr. A– slept well untill three this A. M., when he awoke with the same
characteristic pain in his bowels. This paroxysm he described as intermitting
somewhat, the severest pain being located in and below the left hypogastrium.
Has vomited but once ; had two stools and feels much inclined to a repetition
thereof; no thirst, head-ache, or fever; reports having had facial neuralgia badly
five years since in the city of Boston. With that he lost his hearing upon the
left side ; feels very weak now, and quite unnerved by the severity of the pain.
Prescribed Veratrum alb. 2 and Colocynth 2, in alternation half-hourly, and substi-
tuted cold water compresses for the warm ones of yesterday, 4 P.M.–An en-
tire intermission; no apparent disease whatever; no more vomiting, neither
diarrhoea, since my former visit. Paroxysm subsided at 10 A. M.; Continued
Verat. and Coloc. with longer intervals. -
Jan. 27th, third day, 9 A.M.–Patient suffering again; slept well until 1 A.M.,
when he was awakened by a severe pain running from the old to a new locality.
It is now seated in the left lumbar region, evidently involving the kidney on
that side. He says it has become circumscribed to a spot the size of a silver dol-
lar, and from this it follows the ureter by fits and starts, so as to occasion the
most intense suffering. No retraction of the testicle. The right kidney is not
affected. Passes water too readily—when the pains come, it runs away incon-
tinently almost. Left hypogastrium but slightly sore, while the epigastrium
shows no remnant of the original attack. Pain now of shooting and spasmodic
nature with occasional intervals of a few minutes. Ordered Belladonna 3 and
Cantharis 3 in half-hourly alternation ; warm water compresses over the seat of
the pain, and enjoined perfect rest and quiet. 4 P.M.–Paroxysm subsided as
before ; reports that, just previous to entire relief, he experienced one or two
slight turns, of strangury. Complains of a slight Soreness, referable, doubtless,
to the use of a voluntary sinapism by the nurse more than to any after or inflam-
matory symptoms remaining. Continue same prescription ; to drink freely of a
cold infusion of slippery-elm bark. -
Jan. 28th, fourth day, 9 A.M.–Slept soundly and felt almost well on rising
at 7, but half an hour subsequently the pain returned. Is growing somewhat
nervous from want of appetite since yesterday morning and the severity of the
paroxysms. No thirst or other febrile symptoms; bowels costive ; back pains
him more than yesterday; pains run down into the testicle, and this organ is
slightly retracted. Gave Wux wom. 2, until the afternoon. -
4 P.M.–Dr. S. SEYMoUR called with me ; patient but recently grown easy of
the pain; sitting up and feeling more of an appetite; grew comfortable at 11
A. M., but the pain returned at 1, continuing until 2.45 P.M.; gave him Mer-
curius solub. 2 and Cantharis 2, alternating hourly during the paroxysm, and every
two hours in the interval. Continue the infusion of slippery-elm. - - -
Jan. 29th, fifth day, 10 A. M.–Mr. A– had a quiet evening and a good

night; slept well; no pain, a good appetite, feels like going down to his store.
Dismissed. - - -
V-The Secretary read notes of the following case communicated by P. L.
HATCH, M.D., of Minneapolis, Minn. : - -
“A robust-looking man, 22 years of age, with light hair, blue eyes, fair skin,
rotund in every lineament, quick-spoken, athletic in movement, and apparently
of excellent habits, a tradesman by occupation, came seventy miles to be treated
for “fits,” which had made their first appearance a fortnight previous, in parox-
ysms occurring daily at a uniform hour, forewarning him of their approach by a
sense of weakness and desire to sleep, which preceded the attack about fifteen min-
utes. The paroxysm began with instantaneous loss of consciousness, cionic
spasms, emprosthotonos, subsultus, violent yet fruitless efforts to regain a stand-
ing position ; head hot ; superficial vessels injected with dark blood; frothing at
the mouth, and the most ludicrous grimaces during the momentary relaxations,
as if there were a very disagreeable taste in the mouth ; entire inability to swal-
low, except at the moment of the relaxation, when he would gulp down a quart
of water at five or six swallows, with swinish voracity; respiration rapid, each
attended with a groan or noise expressive of intense suffering; profuse perspira-
tion; abnormal viscera in “knots” seemingly the size of a cocoa-nut, as felt
with the hand through the parietes. No evacuation of wind or facces during the
paroxysm, which lasted the first time I saw him, about two hours. Gave no
medicine. Paroxysm had a decade of about one-fourth its period of duration,
and left him in a quiet sleep which lasted one hour, when he arose, feeling “quite
well,” except a slight sense of weakness and fatigue. Paroxysms are double-
quotidian for the last five days, with eight hours' intermission; appetite good.
The second day I gave him Bell. 2 every ten minutes when the paroxysm came
on ; paroxysm one hour and a quarter, about the same in severity. During the
interval gave Nuz vom. 12. . . . . . - - - . .
Third day same ; paroxysm only three-quarters of an hour, and considerably
lighter in the morning; had none in the afternoon, only a slight sleepiness at the
usual hour. . . . .

Fourth day; gave Bell. 12 in the same manner, with more decided effect. Par-
oxysm very slight in the morning, and that was the last.
Gave him Nur vom. 12 at long intervals for three or four days and dismissed
him; after which I saw him daily for several months, he manifesting no further
indications of the disease. - . .
VI.--Case of obstinate Constipation cured by Nux Vomica. Reported by J.
L. KELLogg, M.D.
Was called to prescribe for C. S.–, a dwarf aged 23 years. History—This
individual had been constipated from birth, the bowels having never moved
spontaneously, and but twice to the present date without laxatives or enemas.
On those two occasions evacuations followed the application of compresses wet
with brandy during the night previous. Frequently he passed eight or ten days
with no evacuation,-many times longer periods, and on one occasion I was
assured by his family that the interval extended through four weeks and three

days 1 From birth to the eighteenth year of his age various laxatives were
exhibited from time to time with but transient effect. At the period last men-
tioned, failing by the usual methods to evacuate his bowels, medical advice was
obtained and many and heroic remedies exhibited without producing the desired
evacuation—but on the contrary, producing much straining and vomiting.
Fearing the result of further attempts with Cathartics, enemas of various kinds
were persistently used until an evacuation was effected. From his eighteenth
to his twenty-third year his bowels were moved by injections alone. In char-
acter the stools were rather large—dark colored—very hard, and covered with
mucus streaked with blood. - --
When called to prescribe for him I found him with wheezing respiration, some
cough, with stitching pains in his chest; abdomen hard and extended ; feet,
hands, and eyelids bloated ; and his appearance generally most unpromising.
My prescription was one-twentieth part of one drop of the Mother Tincture of
Wuz Womica, exhibited morning and evening. His bowels moved, with no other
aid, after haviš taken two doses of the medicine. The administration was pursu-
ed until the entire drop was taken, and the result was that his bowels moved as
regularly as most persons' for the three succeeding months, and his general
health was much improved. At the end of that period I was informed that he,
was threatened with a return of his former difficulty, and sent him Nuz Wom.
3, directing one drop to be given at bed-time when needed. His bowels con-
tinued regular with slight intermission as long as he lived—some four years.
The above case occurred in my practice some eleven years since, in Central
New York, and this was the second prescription I ever made designedly in ac-
cordance with the great Homoeopathic principle.
VII.-Hypericum perfoliatum in lesions in the Spinal cord. Dr. LUDLAM re-
ported the following: -
(a) Mrs. Y., aet. 45, English, of strong, healthy frame and good habits, the
mother of five children, had suffered for ten years with repeated and violent
attacks of Spasmodic Asthma. The paroxysms originated in a diminished
density of the atmosphere, marked by a change in the weather, from clear to
cloudy and damp. If she remained in this city in the immediate vicinity of
Lake Michigan, our capricious climate would subject her to more frequent
attacks; or if in the interior, any barometric change foretelling a storm would
Surely bring them on. This was the only marked peculiarity of her case :—
the severity and duration of the paroxysms, being inversely to the duration and
severity of the storm. They did not always come on at night, but were always
relieved by a critical and most copious expectoration—blennorrhoea—from the
bronchial tubes. Her general health suffered but little until, subsequent to an
attack of double Pneumonia in April last, she seemed entirely prostrate, and
experienced as a consequence an increased susceptibility to aetiological changes.
Her asthmatic attacks became very frequeut and distressing, threatening at
times to destroy her life,
After prescribing various remedies without any considerable relief, I discover-
ed upon inquiring more carefully into the history of the case, that when a girl,
thirty years since, she had fallen down the cellar stairs and injured her spine

at a point corresponding to the superior dorsal vertebrae. She was ill but a
day or two at that time, aud had suffered so little iocal inconvenience since the
occurrence as to have quite forgotten it, until inquired of by me if she had
ever experienced any accident of the kind. There is no tenderness on pressure,
though she reports herself as better able, at intervals, to lie upon either side
than upon her back, for the reason that the latter decubitus increases the
dyspnoea. - - - . -
I withdrew my other remedies and prescribed Hypericum perf. 2 (dec.) ten
drops in half glass of water, a tablespoonful every two hours. Under this
remedy, with prolonged intervals, she recovered entirely; and the cure seems
a radical one, as she has for several months escaped any repetition of her old
infirmity. - - . .
(b) Mary, act 6, daughter of Mr. C.—had been in poor health for three years.
As often as once in a month she suffered an illness of from four days to a week's
duration, of which the following were the most characteristic symptoms:–A
chill, followed by more or less fever of a Continued type, wit} dry, parched
skin, occasional headache—especially toward evening, restlessness, jactation,
with a super-sensibility of the surface of the neck, and of the Superior extre-
mities, great dread of motion, would not walk, and screamed outright when her
mother or any person proposed to lift her from one place to another, insisting
all the while that she should be held in the lap. Face pale and anxious, white
around the mouth, and generally expressive of suffering and uneasiness.
Anorexia, slight thirst for warm drinks, and a hacking cough, which she referred
to irritation in the throat, and which was without expectoration, and apt to be
greatly aggravated by exposure to the least breath of cold air. Tongue whitish,
taste insipid, bowels natural, and urine normal in quantity and quality.
After running their course as aforesaid, these symptoms would gradually
decline into an interim of three weeks more or less, to recur again with almost
as much regularity as the paroxysm of an intermittent.
She had been variously treated, and for various infirmities. Her first
physician diagnosed Worms, and prescribed accordingly, i. e. Anthelmintics ad
nauseam for patient and parasite, but without the least benefit. The Second
thought the disorder sufficiently intermittent to call for anti-periodics, and he
gave Sulphate of Quinine, and other drugs, but with the effect to augment rather
than to relieve the symptoms. Two others had been equally unsuccessful.
On examination I found there existed a decided sensitiveness to pressure
upon the spinous processes of the two inferior cervical and the superior dorsal
vertebrae. Inquiring if she had ever fallen upon the part, her mother said she
had, but that she was not sick at the time and had never suffered from it. She
had fallen down a stairway when but three years of age, and this was my key
to the Pathology of the case. I ordered a “batch” of simple, dry, uncarded
cotton to be applied over the tender locality, and prescribed Hypericum perf. 2
(dec.) to be given internally, once in three hours during the paroxysm. This
plan had the effect of shortening the first paroxysm very considerably, and she
never had another. In anticipation of its recurrence the remedy was for a
time repeated daily ; but it never came, and, after an interval of twelve months,
I am happy to report that the child remains, to all appearance, entirely well.

My Choice of the Hypericum in the above cases in preference to other remedies
apparently better indicated, was based upon the idea that “Hypericum is to
injuries of the Nervous, what Arnica is to those of the Muscular system.” If,
in the experience of others, this proposition be as satisfactorily confirmed, the
fact is worth recording.
VIII. The Secretary called attention to the following extract from a letter
from G. A. Jaeger, M. D., of Eigin, Ill., as bearing upon the Special Thera-
peutics of Dysentery. “I have found this season that Mericurius ſodatus 3rd
Trituration, is more active and better indicated in Dysenteries than the other
Mericurial preporations. In seven cases nothing else was given, and the result
was most successful. This remedy is particularly indicated in cases of frequent
evacuations of green mucus, with but little or no blood. Fven grass green evacu-
ations have been arrested after twelve hours administration, but I have seen no
effect whatever in case of a mere diarrhoea with green stools. If much pain,
colic-like, accompanied the attack, I gave a few pellets of Coloc. 3; but in the
other cases gave nothing in alternation, or even as an “intercurrent.” I have
never witnessed such speedy and satisfactory results from any of the Mercurial
preparations, and I hope you may be induced to try it so soon as an appropriate
case offers.
IX. PERTUssis and its most appropriate remedies. Five adult cases reported. An
inquiry being made if the members had found the usual remedies less effica-
cious than ordinary in the prevailing Pertussis,
Dr. Cooke had not. He had employed vaccination successfully in a few cases.
Dr. Small had witnessed the best effects from the Corallia.
Dr. Ludlam remarked two cases in which prompt relief had followed the use
of the Mephitis Pictorius. Cuprum had relieved others, and Atropine proved
sometimes beneficial. - .
Dr. Seymour reported two well-marked examples of this disease in adults.
Both had had it in childhood.
Dr. Shipman, I have had it twice myself. - - . . . . . . -
The secretary reported two analogous cases occurring this year in his own
practice. .
Dr. Seymour. I have have had two cases of Measles this season occurring
the second time, the one patient aged five years, the other an adult, a lady in
whom there was no mistaking the Special Diagnosis. To the former of these
cases I was summoned in the night through fear of Scarlatina, but found it to
be Rubeola.
X. Mercurius Vivus and Mercurius Corrosivus in the Diarrhoea of young children
Dr. Kellogg read brief notes of the following cases. . . . . . . . . . .
Aug. 6, 1858. Master W. A.—, aged two and a half years, has been subject
to diarrhoea for a week or more. Discharges profuse, thin, yellowish-brown,
fetid, at times involuntary, and attended with much rattling in the bowels,
Thirst and emaciation. During the summer of '57 had a diarrhoea similar in
character which was treated Allopathically, but continued nearly unchecked ,
until winter. His bowels now are moving as often as once in two hours,
Prescribed China 1, and Mercurius Vivus 3, in alternation two hours apart, with

very slight improvement during the following twenty-four hours, when Merecurius
Corrosivus 6. was given instead of Merc. Viv, Inforty-eight hours the diarrhoea
was cured. - --
Oct. 1, ’58. The child remains well and is more fleshy than ever in his life
before. -
I have had several similar cases cured by the same remedies. -
XI. PHRENITIs; Allopathic Prognosis and Homatopathia Practice. Iły S.
Seymour M. D. - - - . . . -
Mr. A. W-, of this city called for me at 8 P.M., Sept. 15th, 1858, to visit
his wife, who he said was worn out with care and anxiety, having had little or
no rest for three weeks, on account of a sick child. a little boy twenty-two
months old. On the way to his house he remarked that the child was still alive
but that no hopes were entertained of his recovery; the attending Physician
had given him up, and he supposed he could not live many hours longer.
After prescribing for the mother, I was requested to see the child and inform-
ed that the Family Physician (Allopathic) had been in attendance for about
three weeks; the first few days assuring the parents the illness was so slight
that the child would be all right very soon; but the prognosis proved deceptive.
The illness daily assumed a more serious and allarming character, “till it was
pronounced a congestion or inflammation of the brain. The day on which I
was called a consultation had been held, consisting of the attending and two
other Physicians, the result of which was a very unfavorable prognosis, so
much so as to deprive the parents of all hope of the recovery of their darling
and only child, especially under the present mode of treatment. I hesitated on
the principlee of non-interference with other Physicians patients in their absence
and suggested the propriety of first sending for the attending physician, but was
assured it was unnecessary inasmuch as he had told them to do what they pleased
and call for whom they pleased; and more than this, they had known him for
years to be a most kind and considerate man; therefore it was finally dispensed
with, with the understanding that he should be notified early the next morning
of the change of Medical treatment. - -
On examining the child I found one of the most distressing little objects I
ever saw—a mere living skeleton covered with a shrivelled colorless skin—all
the flexor muscles and tendons of the body, (excepting the left arm—which was
constantly in motion, sometimes passing in a circular manner on the left side
of the head and face, and then picking and grasping at the bad-clothes and at
vacancy,) were in a state of tonic spasm or rigidity, which could not be resisted
without greatly aggravating the suffering. already too painful to behold—al-
though the Doctor had declared the child unconscious of suffering. He was
taking large doses of anodynes, oft-repeated, which instead of mitigating, only
seemed to aggrevate the suffering. Great dilatation of the pupils and consid-
erable strabismus were present. Head hot, while other parts of the body were
cold; constant nausea and retching; billious diarrhoea; and sleeplessness,
which had existed for a week or ten days past. The above were the most
prominent features of the case. The afflicted parents most beseechingly re-
quested me to give something to allay the suffering and procure sleep. Belladonna
and Chamomilla in hourly alternation, and warm baths were prescribed. -

16th, 5 A. M. Found the patient in a quiet sleep, having fallen asleep within
an hour after the first dose of the Bell, and rested well all night. Bowels
moved less frequently and character of the evacuations much improved. Same
remedies continued, but less frequently repeated. -
Dr. M-, called earlier than usual this morning, before he was notified of the
change of treatment, and on being informed manifested much dissatisfaction,
and to the suprise of the parents, much less amiability of temper than they
expected. He said the child was no better, that the more comfortable night was
not attributable to Homoeopathic remedies—they were deceived, he would be no
better; he might live several days but they need not expect his ultimate re-
covery; the brain was toe much affected to warrant any such prognosis, etc.
17th, 6 P. M. Has had a comfortable day and night, dilatation of the pupils
less, strabismus about the same, stomach and bowels much better, rigidity of
the muscles somewhat less, less picking at the bed-clothes, and left arm lying
most of the time still across the chest, Belladonna and Cuprum alternately
every third hour. Warm bath once a day. - -
18th. About the same. Same remedies continued.
19th. All the symptoms better. Cuprum every 4 hours.
20th, 8 A. M. Passed a very comfortable night, slept well, little or no rolling
of the head on the pillow, slight dilatation of the pupils, strabismus less and
bowels natural. * - - - *
21st. Invited my friend Dr. Ludlam to visit the patient with me, and found
him decidedly improving. Having occasion to be absent from the city a few
days, Dr. L. kindly consented to take charge of my patient.
Returning home on the 25th, I was much gratified to find the little boy doing
well. Pretty much the same course of treatment had been pursued most satis-
factorily. A little strabismus still remained, but the spasmodic rigidity had all
disappeared, and but little medicine was required afterwards; now and then
a dose of Coffea for sleeplessness, and Cina occasionally on occount of worm
symptoms, were administered, with happy effects.
For the last two week (now Nov. 6,) no medicine has been given, and nothing
remains but the debility consequent upon his long sickness and the violent
Allopathic treatment. In short the child is now “all right, ‘‘ as talkative,
bright, cheerful and happy as need be. - . .
Although I do not view the case and its results as very extraordinary under
Homoeopathic treatment, still it is by the parents and friends considered a
miraculous cure, almost equal to a resurrection from the grave. I report the
case merely to encourage the practice of presenting something from our clinical
records at each meeting, expecting for myself to reap more than I shall sow.
XII. Chronic Diarrhºea, Case reported by DR. J. L. KELLOGG. Miss A.—
aged 22, Sanguino-Nervous temperament, 3 years ago was well and weighed
148 lbs. At that period reverse of fortune made it necessary for her to make
personal effort for her support. Great mortification and depression of spirits
resulted, and following these, Diarrhoea during three years as hereinafter
described. -
The affection was ushered in by griping pains in the bowels, soon followed

by a discharge—rather slight, of pale color and streaked with blood. Took
Homoeopathic remedies and was relieved of the intensity of her suffering in a
few days, but from that time to this has scarcely had one evacuation of natural
consistence. The discharges have been in number from one to four in twenty-
four hours. During the first few weeks had to be up nights as well as days. In
consistence the discharges vary from that of a porridge-like substance to that
of mush; in color, from dark to a dirty yellow, sometimes tending to greenish.
Every day has more or less griping pains before evacuations and at other times.
Discharges are copious, sometimes half filling a common night-vessel Appetite—
In the morning, no desire for food, constant desire for stimulants and the most
stimulating condiments; at noon has a most ravenous appetite approaching a
gnawing sensation at the stomâch, which, for the time being, is relieved by a
full meal. Usually about two hours after having eaten there is a return of
uneasiness and distress in the bowels. Anger, anxiety, or grief, excite a motion
of the bowels. Coffee invariably induces an evacuation. Active physical
exercise seems to delay the evacuations. Moral Symptoms—Mind exceedingly
irritable—excitable—desponding—hopeless as to her recovery. Menstrual
habits slightly irregular. Form emaciate, countenance pale and fallen.
Extremities inclined to be cold—always so in autumn and winter.
Prescribed Aug. 1st., Lachests 200, three drops. The first day had no dis-
charge. The second day but one, with less pain and but little change in the
character of the stool. The same remedy, but of different potencies down to
the 8th, was subsequently repeated with indifferent success. During the month
of August, Colocynth, China, Gummi Gutti and Mercurius were administered
with little benefit, except in a measure to relieve the pain. -
Sept. 1st, Prescribed Mere. Sol. 3, in the morning, and Veratrum 3 at bed-
time. Sept. 13th., Much improved—but one passage daily, nearly natural in
consistence, color, and quantity. Has no pain—strength improved—cheerful,
and confident of recovery. -
Nov. 1., Continues regular. Improved in flesh, and in all respects considers
herself cured. - .
XIII. The following extract from an Essay by DR, SEYMoUR entitled, “The
Importance of calling Things by their Right Names,“ is worthy of re-print
and reflection. Touching the mooted question of nomenclature among physicians,
we read:— . - - - -
“Is it not especially appropriate, and even the duty of Homoeopathic Phy-
sicians to occupy such a position that they may be “epistles known and read
of all men?'" What Homoeopath does not feel annoyed when a patron of Allopathy
stumbles into his office, and calls for billious pills, an emetic, blister-salve,
strengthening bitters, a vial of paregoric, &c., &c.? Then why not, in every
way in which he announces himself to the public, a physician, present the
distinctive characteristic of his system of practice. -
“I would like to see the word “Homoeopathic,’ stand out in bold and legible
characters, as a prefix to the name of every genuine Homoeopathic physician–
on his door plate, his office sign, his business card, and in the City Directory.
Then he would stand committed before the community, and feel obliged to carry

out his principles in his practice, and advocacy of the law of Cure, Similia &c.
“The habit which prevails to some extent, with some professed Homoepath-
ists, of accommodating their practice or prescriptions to the Allopathic pro-
clivities of their patients, is dishonorable to him who resorts to it, and suicidal
to the best interests of Homoeopathy. He, who will be habitually, or even
º , occasionally, guilty of Hºmoeopathic practice, under the guise of Homoeopathy,
"deserves, and will receive, the execration of every honest person, and especially
of every veritable Homoeopath. Such a man is a stinking excrescence; and the
sooner he is sloughed off, the better for the interests and reputation of our
School of Medicine.
“If we were true to our avowed principles, we would tolerate no Mongrelism
within our borders. If Homoeopathy be not based upon, and sustained, by the
impregnable principles of truth, the sooner it is exploded, abandoned, and
consigned to oblivion, the better. But, if it be fixed upon an immutable Law
of Cure, as we believe, let us stand up boldly, manfully, and fearlessly, and
show to the world, that we are not ashamed, but proud of our name and pro-
fession. Let no pecuniary consideration influence us to a compromise of prin-
ciple. If any of our patients desire Allopathic treatment, let them have it, but
not at our hands. Better, far better, to pass them along into Allopathic hands.”
Further on he remarks:
“I apprehend, that the Homoeopathic School of Medicine is strong and
vigorous enough to stand in its own shoes, and bid defiance to all opposition.
If not, it will never acquire the stature of manhood, by a vacillating, cringing,
crouching and time-Serving policy.
“Then, let us manifest an independence and confidence in our principles,
by acting consistently with the dignity of our high calling. Let us say, by our
manual bearing, that we verily believe our avowed Medical creed. Let the
Chicago Homeopathic Medical Society, as such, present an unbroken, undivided,
and consistent phalanx of genuine Homoeopathic practitioners. Let no sort of
eclecticism find favor among us. Let us strive to perfect our noble and bene-
ficent science of medicine, not by looking back, but forward. Our beacon light
is ahead, not in the rear.”
XIV. Coffee Injections in Neuralgia of the Rectum. The Secretary reported
the following:— .
Mrs. U-, at 30, three weeks after confinement, which was complicated only
by a slight attack of Colitis with diarrhoea, and which responded to the ordinary
remedies, became excessively “nervous,” anticipating the accident of a milk-
leg from which she once suffered in New York. This morbid condition of the
nervous system was plainly referable to Spinal disorder mixed up with a drug
eachexia, and the weather being stormy at the time, she experienced repeated
attacks of an erratic Neuralgia. For chronic hamorrhoids, aggravated by her
recent confinement, she had used a small enema containing ten drops of Ham-
mamclis virg. 1, twice daily, with the most signal relief. Suddenly one evening,
after a comfortable day, she was seized as follows:—There came on a “prick-
ing, as of forty needles in the rectum,” with “pressing down and burning;”

a dragging in the coccyx and sacrum, which latter are too tender to lie upon.
The pressing down in the rectum is increased by rolling upon the left side, but
the pricking and burning are lessened thereby. The pain remits but is intoler-
able at short intervals. Bowels soluble—moved two hours since and without
pain, except in the hiemorrhoidal tumor. Is disposed to cough a little, which
effort produces great aggravation of the suffering. Stranguary at intervals.
She rolls about in agony, is excessively nervous, and cannot be composed, to
sleep. She had been in this condition some hours when I saw her. When the
symptoms first appeared, the nurse, supposing the trouble due to the haemorr.
hoids, had administered an extra enema of the Hammamelis, but with greatly
increased aggravation of the suffering. The poor patient declared she could
not live, nor did she desire to, if called to endure such pain another hour.
I gave her a table-spoonful of a strong Decoction of Coffee from the table,
once in ten minutes, and an enema of the same article diluted, once in half an
hour, to her entire relief. She soon became easy and comfortable and went to
sleep. No other remedies were administered.
XV. D.R. N. F. CookE made a verbal report of an interesting case illustrative
of the fact that a correct Diagnosis is essential to success in our practical
Therapeutics. - . -
The patient, Mr. C.—, a middle aged man, had been suffering for three years
with Chronic Rheumatism which would occasionally put on an Acute type. He
Thad experienced such severe pain that both his joints and limbs were distorted.
The feet were very much deformed, the toes overlapping each other. For the
past twelve-months he has been free from Acute attacks save in the feet. These
latter were so painfully diseased that he could not walk. His face bore an
expression of agony; his disposition, naturally jovial, was soured; and he said
The “felt as though walking on needles at every step.” , -
I prescribed various remedies for him, Nitric Acid, Colchicum, etc., some-
‘times with apparent, but really without permanent relief. One evening, about
*wo months since, when he was suffering and scolding even more than usual,
I expressed a desire to look at his feet. At each bearing of the foot I found a
great callosity,+four on one foot and five on the other. The treatment then
became very obvious. Removed these deposits, and, to prevent their return,
had him wear a cork sole so prepared as to relieve pressure, and from which he
afterward experienced great relief and satisfaction. His natural expression
of countenance returned, and he “feels like a colt,” as he says. Several
eminent medical gentlemen had previously treated him constitutionally for the
same infirmity. -
XVI. The Causes of Disease. Translated from the French of M. RASPAIL,
by G. E. SIIIPMAN, M. D. Prefacing this paper, of which we give only a brief
abstract. Dr. S. says: . -
To the Medical philosopher especially, the causes of things have ever been
matters of deep interest, and though the search after these causes has not al-
ways been successful it has been prosecuted with an ardor which gives promise
of success, certain, though it may yet be future. It is the intention of this

paper to present the results of the researches in this field of an original thinker
of great erudition and unwearied industry. Many of his views are perhaps
enthusiastic, but as the opinions of every man who thinks for himself are
worthy of consideration, those of M. Raspail certainly deserve a hearing.
In the 1st Division of the subject, as laid down by the Author, we have
Physical Causes. Chapter 1st gives us a sub-division of these into the Pneu-
matic, Dietetic or digestive, and Thermanic Causes of Disease. Chap. II.
Causes which proceed by the decomposition of the liquids, and the disorganiza-
tion of the tissues. These are divided into, a, those which act by the vehicle
of the respiration, as acid emanations or exhalations, and basic emanations or
exhalations; and b. disorganizing causes which act by the alimentary canal.
Chap. III. Causes which proceed by solution of continuity. Of these the first
category takes cognizance of Inert or not living causes; the second of Organized
or living causes of disease. Dr. S. has selected and given us M. Raspail's
views of the First Category embracing the Inert Causes of Disease. r
425. I take as a point of departure the introduction into our tissues of a
simple briar, a sort of smooth and curved cone drawn out at the ends into a
sharp point. Let this brier be thrust into our skin iike the coulter of a plough;
the direction of this tearing body will be almost immediately indicated to the
eye by a red furrow; and to the thought by a sensation of burning, a re-union
of two characters, one visible, the other sensible, which by common consent
is designated inflammation. As the cause is readily perceived, but little notice
is in general taken of the effects; it is a simple case of disorganization readily
-comprehended by most men. The universal redness of the tissue evidently
comes from the extravasation of the blood of the sub-epidermic capillaries,
which employ themselves into this furrow by the orifice of their solutions of
continuity; blood which undergoes hoematiosis by becoming oxygenized in this
tissue traumatically pulmonary. For every internal tissue imbibes and elabor-
ates air, as do the lungs, and as soon as it comes in immediate contact with
the air itself, the venous blood is immediately changed into arterial. Hence
augmentation of caloric; for we have here condensation of the oxygen of the
air, absorption by a liquid and transformation by combination; a local fever;
that is to say, alteration by interuption of the regularity of the circulation.
At a trifling depth this case of disease cures itself; evaporation suffices for the
dessication of the extravasated liquids. As nothing ferments while dry, there
is no fear of purulent poisoning; the crust which forms, protects both the
subjacent tissues and the vessels which may still be open whether from the in-
flammatory action of the air or the contagious infection of decomposition; it is
a case similar to that of incisions made into a tree, which cure themselves by
the transformation of the wounded inner-bark into a new protecting outer-bark.
In p. 426, our author supposes a case resulting from a wound produced by
such a thorn or briar which has had its point dipped in some poison. Of this .
class are dissecting wounds etc., “where the contagion of death will infuse
itself into the blood with all its train of most fearful symptoms. The slightest
puncture may produce a fatal inoculation. * * * * * * 428. What kind of
a disease is it in fact which announces itself almost without a precursory stage

by vertigo, obscured vision, lipothymia, swooning, desire to vomit, a burning
irregular fever, which in a few moments ascends to the brain; cramps in the
extremities, palpitations and oppression at the centre; the nervous susceptibil-
ity everywhere aroused; then general prostration, delirium and in three days
death? What name will be given to this entity if the cause is not suspected?
Is it a cerebral fever, a neurosis, a putrid and typhoid fever, a sporadic case
of typhus? The autopsy reveals nothing, and the too rapid march of the
symptoms has left nowhere sufficiently deep traces. You then who have sur-
prised the cause in the very act, do you open the deliberation without enlight-
ening any one; and you will have opportunity to appreciate by this one case,
the value of medical theories which have for their end to eliminate by the
combinations of Symptoms, the unknown, which is the cause of the trouble.
The domain of the imagination commences where that of observation ends;
and the domain of the imagination is a desert of sand where one has no guide
but the stars at night and the mirage by day. The fact and then illusion; the
observation abruptly terminated, and then the hypothesis which follows it
without connection or order—such is Medicine from the time of Medea, to
our day. - - . . .
429. However that may be, we have here a cause of disease which is simple
and which falls quite within the reach of our senses, Let us change the place
and we shall proceed, each time, to change the characteristic symptoms of the
disease, and according to the nature of the organ which is their seat, we shall
see the disease presenting itself as severe or light, curable or mortal.
430. Let some analogous sharp point penetrate deeper into the flesh of the
arm or leg; from that moment the scratch will become a phlegmon, of an in-
flammatory character much more severe, as it will be protected with less care,
and as the temperature will be more favorable to the progressing fermentation
of the stagnant liquid. In fact the solution of continuity being more profound,
and consequently the mass of blood whether venous or arterial, disgorged by
the capillaries, being more considerable in this artificial cloaca, the decompo-
sition of liquids will take place more rapidly and upon a larger scale; for the
air, that principle of all fermentation, will penetrate there, through a larger
orifice. Soon after, the movement of the muscles will displace the point in
every direction, they will thus multiply the solutions of continuity and give so
much more access to the external air. The inflammation will thus spread from
space to space, an interval will be formed between the oxygenated and the
unoxygenated blood, an obstacle to the regular circulation; and the abnormal
products of this elaboration of a dead and inert liquid, being absorbed with all
their most subtle properties, by the adjacent veins will soon carry fever with
its consecutive disorders into the whole circulatory torrent, then death.
After remarking at considerable length, upon the liability of any organ or
section in the regional anatomy of the body to such an accident, and that the
consequent symptoms would go by different names as located variously, we
have a catalogue of examples from several authors whose names or cases we
need not enumerate. We may however copy one of the most authentic and
interesting: - . " . . -

“M’lle Bronhan, Soubrette of the Theatre-Francais, complained, for many
years, of pains which she experienced successively in various parts of the body
—pains sometimes dull, at others acute, but always of a character difficult to
explain. The pain finally became seated in the breast and produced there a
growing tumor which led her to fear the formation of a cancer; her physician
himself partaking of the same fear. M'lle B. decided to submit to an opera-
tion. The evening before the day fixed for the important act, she perceived in
her breast a sharp point protruding, which finally perforated the epidermis and -
showed the point of a needle, which our actress lost no time in extracting, and
from that time she was relieved of all the nosological train of her sufferings--
her rheumatisms, her coxalgiae, her neuralgiae, and finally her cancer, all
resided at the point of the needle, which traveled through her flesh, and bore
from place to place an irritation which changed its name according to organs
in which it was present—the needle was oxydized over a great extent.”
434. “We have taken as a type, a sharp pointed substance, smooth upon its
surface, and which to penetrate deeply must be urged by force from behind.
But let us suppose a sharp pointed substance pursuing the course above indica-
ted, itself covered more or less regularly with sharp projections extending
towards its base; such are splinters of wood or bone, with irregular asperities
which result from the fracture of an organized tissue either woody or bony;
such are also the beards of the grasses and many other organs of those vegetables
so common about us. The beard, or the splinter, once introduced into the skin,
will be susceptible, simply by the play which the motions of the muscles im-
part to it, to penetrate from space to space, even to organs the most noble and
the most necessary to life; to the liver, the heart, the spleen, the intestines,
the genital organs, there to produce ravages which will change their name
according to their seat, their extent and duration which multiply contacts and
combinations in an incalculable progression.”
Extending the argument by a practical illustration of the effects of these
little “arrow headed substances' upon the respiratory surfaces, our author
enquires, p. 436: - - -
“What physician would divine the nature of these disorders if the patient
should not reveal to him their accidental cause? None. After the revelation
of the cause, each one would consider himself capable of it, and calling to his
aid all the resources of the vocabulary, he will favor us impromptu with twenty
symptoms which would have led him to diagnosticate the nature and the cause
of the disease, and finally the differences which this accident presents from
such a spontaneous disease from which it has taken the mask. * * * * “
437. “During the year 1824 there appeared near the environs of Pesth in
Hungary an epizooty which raged chiefly among the flocks of sheep. The
animal seemed all at once seized with an unusual restlessness; it leaped up
frightened and as if pursued by some invisible demon, its fleece might be seen
to shudder here and there and the pain seemed to be most acute upon the least
aproach of the hand; the unquiet rams butted with their horns without objects
and without anger. To such an extreme of agitation, there succeeded a state
of apparent calmness; the animal languished, the eye became dull and deject-

ed, the head hung low, the gait slow and painful, eating at first as much as
usual, nevertheless becoming rapidly emaciated. Then disgust followed,
even in the richest pastures,-soon the disease assumed a grave character,
sometimes cough, at others diarrhoea, at others again a kind of ascites; a fever
was always present—a slow and ataxic fever. The skin was covered with foetid
ulcers; at other times it appeared healthy and in good condition, nevertheless
at this very time the animal fell as if struck by apoplexy. An ill-omened
sanies trickled frequently from the mouth and eyes; the animal laid down re-
signed to die, and if on the first appearance of the symptoms the animals were
not immediately slaughtered, they soon became putrid and the owners were not
sure of securing even the skin, devoured as it was in large patches by this
devastating disease. Was it contagious? or an infection? In the stables they
were not troubled, but they only needed to go to the infected pasture and they
bore away the germ of the disease, which however, they did not communicate to
others. Commissioners were appointed to visit the place to study this new
disease; never were the precursors, the symptoms, the phases, the crises, classed
and observed with more care and in a more exact manner; the reports scientifi-
cally drawn up occupied many sessions, and during the course of the discussion
the disease took a multitude of different names; none analyzed it better than
those who had never seen it; it was never better described than at a distance;
it was thought that the admirable description of Virgil, more than one pecular-
ity of which was recalled by this epizooty, was not forgotten by the philologists
of the assembly. The disease then was very well studied; the limits of the
centre of infection were topographically determined; the direction of the minds,
the temperature, the range of the barometer were exactly set down every day.
But what was the cause of the disease? Must such rich pastures be abandoned
in a country where such rich pastures were none too abundant; or was there
rather a hope to purify them, to make them salubrious or less injurious for
cultivation or pasturage? What were finally the means to employ?
438. An observing botanist put an end to these wise discussions and this
disease passed by a single work from the domain of Pathology to that of the
Genera Plantarum. The entity of the contagion, the malignity of the epidemic
influence, tho archaeus of Van Helmont, the stimulus of Brown, the germ of
the contagious virus, the inflammation of Stahl and Broussais, the spirit of evil
- in fine as the red skins called it, that mysterious cause of such ruin and so many
ills, this unknown disease with so many titles, had nevertheless a name in our
catalogues; it was inscribed there under the name of Stipapennata, a high grass
of the sandy pastures. * * * * * * * *
439. Furthermore, men are not beyond the reach of such accidents, but they
readily divine their nature and relieve themselves promptly. Desfontaines.
relates that nothing so incommodes the traveller to Africa, as these flowrets (ºf
the Stipapennata, which, insinuating themselves into their garments, begin to
bore and penetrate the flesh, occasioning the accutest pain, f man was not
so organized, that in this case he could use his five fingers and his tongue, he
would carry the dart without knowing its nature, and without ability to remove
it, and would parish like the sheep under the wound of a straw. Sarragin

relates that the quills of the porcupine once introduced into the flesh, work
their way among the muscles, till they meet and penetrate one of the viscera,
whence death ensues. - - . . .
Omiting the detail of cases quoted in support of these viows, some of which
are very reliable and interesting, we read again. º
444. But if, in place of an entire spike or beard, we have to do with a broken
one merely—a powder composed of its spiculae—from that moment the disease
would preserve its place in the nosographic table, because the cause, reduced
to dimensions too minute to be appreciated by the eye, will be discharged un-
noticed and confounded with the substance of the pus. Whoever has endeavored
to find in the living subject, or even in an autopsy, in the products of decompo-
sition, the palpable traces of the mechanical cause? The Scapel cuts, lays
open, cuts off, but never analyses; and how manythings pass beneath its edges,
carrying with them as rejected tho solution of the riddle and the end of dis-
putation? . - * - -
445. Fix your thoughts now upon that which surrounds us; calculate how
often, at certain seasons, deglutition or inspiration may receive from a breath
of air, the pulverised debris of these harvests of the spikes of obscure grasses
which line our roads, streets and alleys, and say, if many of our epidemics,
so scientifically studied, may not have been in their essence or in their compli-
cation, the work of these little straws? -

447. We have just studied some interesting cases of the introduction into
the air passages of foreign bodies whose very structure explains the regularity
and uniformity of the morbid phenomena. The relative position of the larynx
sufficiently demonstrates how it happens that these foreign bodies introduce
themselves into the lungs rather than into the alimentary canal; these bodies
which advance creeping must insinuate themselves into the tirst cavity which
they meet in their course. But the alimentary canal, as one may readily pre-
suppose, is not exempt from like accidents; it is evident indeed from the very
nature of deglutition, that it is more frequently exposed than any other part,
Now, here again, when the foreign body is brought to view it is but an accident
hardly worth a mention; when it escapes observation (and what is it which
does not escape observation, during the twenty-four hours which separate the
visits of the physician—visits which last but a few minutes,) then the learned
science seizes its rights and the disputation has full sway; the more obscure as
it is more profound, it recedes from the light in its very effort to penetrate its
subject, - . . .
448. Read all the cases which Science has registered of different foreign
bodies introduced accidentally into internal organs; how laconic is the descrip-
tion, how simple the history, how meagre the symptoms detailed. '.
According to Ant. Benivenius a woman of Tuscany swallowed a pin. Three
years after she discharged it by the umbilicus without any consequent derange-
ment of the health. - - . . . . . - -
According to Walescus of Tarentum, a young girl in Venice passed in her
urine a needle three inches long. - - -

Monsieur de Rohan says Ambrose Pare, had a fool named Guion who swal-
lowed the end of a sharp sword three fingers long or thereabouts and twelve
days after passed it per anum.
And all other descriptiens are as brief as these—when the foreign body is
of such dimensions that its presence admits of no doubt. . . .
But when the foreign body is of such minute dimensions as to escape our
sight, Oh! we shall then have a journal of observations from hour to hour, the
better ballanced by the worse, a succession of aggravations and ameliorations;
and at the end of this interminable train of exact observations, comes the
eternal refrain of Death and Autopsy with their endless disappointments.
449. Are there then no bodies, except those of a certain dimension, which
may happen to introduce themselves into our organs? And has Nature fixed
as a measure of these dimensions, the extent of our sight? It seems to me on
the contrary that these cases of introduction should be the more frequent the ,
more minute the foreign bodies are; for under this form they find fewer obstacles.
Now why does not the analogy of the consecutive effects of the introduction of
foreign bodies of a large size lead us to assign to the introduction of those of a
small size the cause of phenomena entirely and proportionally similar?
For, finally, all this reasoning reduces itself to the following formula which
carries its evidence with it:~A GERTAIN CAUSE HAVING PRODUCED A cKRTAIN

450. Hence, in making an application of this axiom, which I shall call a
counter-proof, if it is certain that a foreign body introduced into the lungs in-

duces there according to its dimensions and its exterior forms, one or the other
of the numerous affections which we have registered in our catalogues under
the name of catarrh, asthma, croup, peripneumon, pleurisy, emphysema, empiayéma,
. phthsis, pnlmonalis etc.; why should not these affections always and in all cases
be the effect of foreign bodies of dimensions less appreciable to our gross
methods of observation? . . . . . ‘. .
451. A foreign body in the stomach induces there all the sufferings of gas-
tritis; in the intestines all those of enteritis. Why should not gastritis and en-
teritis always be the effects of analagous foreign bodies?
452. The same of diseases of the heart; the same of diseases of the liver
and of the spleen, icterus or intermittent fevers. -
453. The same of diseases of the vagina and uterus. . . . . . . . . . .
454. The same of diseases of the urinary passages and of calculi in the
bladder, which the presence of a foreign body introduced in a visible manner

mation being once recognized, does it not suffice to explain all other cases of a
similar nature even when the dimensions of the nucleus are such as to elude
our sense? . . . . .
455. The same of rheumatic or arthritic pains, of nervous spasms. The
introduction of a needle into one of our muscles is sufficient to determine, with
the most acute pains, the loss of locomotion; why, in general, may not every

loss of motion, coxalgia, paraplegia etc., arise from an analogous cause acting
not hypothetically, but quite simply and in a mechanical manner, by dividing
the muscular and nervous filaments which it meets in its passage, thus cutting
off communication between the passive and the active organ, the contractile
organ and the organ whose electrical influence induces contraction.
456. That these inductions should be stamped with falsity it would be
necessary that Medicine should be a Science without any point of contact with
all others, cast beyond the domain of actual nature, having separate law8,
separate reasoning, separate truth, while the physician in treading upon the
threshold of its sanctuary should resign his distinctive character as man, divest
himself of his power to perceive and reason, to see and foresee, to observe and
to judge; he should then empty from his cranium that cerebral organ in whic
thought is elaborated and reasoning completed. Has man in fact ever reasonet
in Chemistry, in Physics, in Astronomy etc., with that incoherence and that
duplicity of formulae which characterize medical reasoning?
457. Surrounded by dangers, in this world where everything is active as
well as ourselves, let us well remember that it is to the smallest matters that
we are most frequently the victims, for the very reason that it is against these
we guard ourselves the least; these are spirits since they are invisible, but
spirits which torture us after the manner of natural bodies.
If then it is certain and demonstrated that such a body acts by cutting the
thread of everything which is soft, by opening the canal of everything which
circulates, every time that I shall find these filaments severed, these canals
emptied in this manner, I shall have the right to suspect the action of a foreign
body analagous by its structure and its organization.
XVII. The Hammamelis Virg, in Intestinal Haemorrhage. The Secretary read
notes of the subjoined case communicated by L. PRATT, M. D., of Rock
Creek, Ill.
I was called iast March to visit the case referred to—a young man aet. 19.
Some six months before the present sickness he had Intermittent Fever which
was treated with Quinine. Had not enjoyed good health since that time—could
endure ittle exercise—easily affected by changes of weather which frequent-
ly produced slight chills, and occasionally diarrhoea—had a poor appetite and
a feeling of general weakness most of the time. For two weeks before I saw
him he appeared dull and inactive—had frequent chills and flushes of heat,
was restless and slightly delirious at night. For three nights before the first
visit he had had a watery diarrhoea. Also he complained of pains in the back,
limbs, and head. His tongue was coated with a dark yellow fur, with a portion
through the centre almost black, very dry and cracked, pulse small and fre-
quent, great prostration of strength, trembling of the hands and subsultus.
Very little urine secreted, and that of a dark brandy color. Gurgling sound
after or while drinking—sordes on the teeth, continued heat of the body with
cold feet, intense thirst for cold water and internally feeling of heat in the
bowels.
Prescribed Rhus to.c. and Arsenicum alternately every three hours. The
patient seemed to improve a little until the third day, when I was suddenly

called to see him again in consequence of Haemorrhage from the bowels. The
blood passed by the rectum amounted to at least two quarts before I saw him.
He had stools of blood about once in fifteen minutes, Prescribed four drops
of the Mother Tingture of Hammamelis virg. in a tumbler of water, a desert-
spoon-full to be taken every ten minutes until the discharges were arrested for
an hour—omit for an hour, then to take one more dose. Afterwards omit until
a relapse occurred. I was not able to see the patient again until twenty-four
hours later. Ordered the dose to be repeated immediately after each passage
of blood. Found the next day that it had twice returned, but was at once
arrested by a single dose each time.
This patient took for the week following Arsenicum 3 and China 12, alternately
every three to six hours. Afterwards for three days took the Arsenicum at
night only, for diarrhoea, and a dose of China at 9 A.M. and 3 P. M. daily.
Discharged, and has since enjoyed good health.
In the above case the blood discharged was of a dark grumous nature. The
prompt suppression of these stools is one of the many proofs of the efficacy of
Hammamelis in passive Hamorrhages. Its use is of course empirical, having
been recommended by different authorities as of service in Haemoptysis and in
Haematemesis.
In order to decide intelligently whether or not it is adapted to any given case
with or without haemorrhage, we should know its pathogenesis more fully. It
is probable we shall then learn that the cases where its action has bee so marked
are those where the totality of the symptoms corresponds with those of the
remedy. And this knowledge can only come by a careful proving of the drug
itself.
XVIII. HALE’s Medicated Glycerine as a Topical Application, D.R. Lup LAM
called the attention of the Members to the value of Glycerine as a vehicle for
our remedies when we desire to apply them locally. Adopting the suggestion
of Dr. E. M. Hale, as set forth in the Nov. No. of THE AMERICAN HoxideoPATHIc
REVIEW, he had employed it frequently and with the most satisfactory results.
The following cases illustrate its use:— . - . . .
a. A little infant of some three months became sorely affected with a form of
Eczema—the E. Rubrum. Various extra-professional measures were resorted
to to heal, the surfaces which were irritated and excoriated by the constant
exudation of a thin, acrid, serous fluid. But all these means failed. The case
became a very bad one—next akin to the pustular, E. Impetiginoides. The eyes,
ears, axillae, umbilicus and the folds of flesh in the neighborhood of the joints
and of the nates, were all “raw” with the successive eruption of new vesicles
and their extravasating liquid. A neighbor’s child had died of the same disorder
Without fear of drying up an “issue” in this case, I prescribed three pellets
of Rhus Tor 3. to be given thrice daily, and ordered, through our excellent
Pharmaceutists HALSEY & King, the following preparation: -
R. Tinct. Calendula 2. gtts xx. -
Glycerine oz. 1-2
Apply locally to the diseased surfaces by means of a feather, morning and
evening. This patient began immediately to improve and soon recovered:

The Calendula with the Rhus would undoubtedly have cured the case with-
out the Glycerine, but it was a most happy and grateful vehicle to the former,
and by its property of excluding the atmospheric air—a great desideratum in
such instances, certainly contributed somewhat to the speedy relief which
followed. -
b. Mrs. S- had had for thirty years what is vulgarly denominated salt-rheum,
affecting especially the skin about the joints of the fingers, and more or less
the whole surface of the hands. Characteristically it was only observable and
troublesome in the winter season. Urtica urens 2 employed as above directed,
with the Glycerine, cured the disorder entirely, without creating any injurious
consequences whatever. Glycerine alone is a good application for this vexa-
tious infirmity, but it can scarce be styled curative. In my practice the Urtica
urens has acted like a specific, though I do not apprehend it would prove such
in all cases. Conjoined with the Glycerine I consider it very valuable, and
my experience is by no means confined to its use in the single example just cited.
In one case of Herpes—H. Proputialis, I employed the Ithus tox. 2, with
Glycerine, and with the same good result. The case was an aggravated one,
but the above named preparation alone, soon effected a cure. I have not pre-
scribed any remedy with the Glycerine of a lower potency than the second dec.,
or the reason that the results are quite as satisfactory thus far as any that I
could expect from the Mother Tincture, as recommended by Dr. Hale. Ex-
amples might possibly occur in which the lower forms of a remedy would be
indicated locally, as they sometimes appear to be constitntionally, but such are
of course very rare.
In certain varieties of Erysipelas, medicated with Bell, Rhus tor., etc.; in
the Crusta Laetea—Impetigo Larvalis, with Calendula, or Viola tric.; in the
Tinea Captis—Porvigo Favosa, with Nitric acid; in Infantile Dysentery, with
Nur vomica, Aloes, or Angustura, as a soothing enema to subdue the tenesmus;
in Acute Articular Rheumatism, with the Actora racemosa, Bell., Rhus ete, ; in
Haemorrhoids, with Hammamelis, etc., etc., we may find the Glycerine to be one
of the few successful and really valuable juvantia within reach of the Profession.
XIX. Arsenic as a Hygienie Agent in Phthisis Pulmonalis. DR. N. F. Cooke
detailed some very interesting cases in which he had employed this article in
Phthisis with good results. He was first led to prescribe it thus in consequence
of its reputed power to diminish the quantity of Oxygen required to work the
machinery of the animal organism. A grand indication in the treatment of
Phthisis is to lessen the labor of calorification. When the calorifacient digestion
is not performed properly, the general system of course suffers, and, if the
same oxygenation of the tissues be required as before, the wear and tear is
shown by emaciation, debility and general disorder. The Cod’s Liver Oil is an
aid to this function, reaching the same indication in Phthisis from exactly the
opposite direction, but whether so well or so effectually as the Arsenic, it doth
not yet appear. .
Dr. C. thought the latter exceedingly valuable in cases where from some
cause the digestive and assimilative sfunctions are so disordered that the
necessary nutriment is not supplied, and it becomes absolutely imperative to

relieve the respiratory apparatus of extra labor in supplying oxygen to the
economy. Under these circumstances the Dr. is satisfied he has kept patients
alive with the Arsenic for months, and in one case for nearly two years, who,
otherwise, must have succumbed to the destroyer at a much earlier period.
Eventually they die; but if by any such means we may prolong life to the
society of friends and the like perquisites of existence, it becomes our duty to
attempt it. -
He gives a low trituration, at long intervals, and, excepting in one case, has
not witnessed any constitutional symptoms worthy of note, Taken in this
manner it is not in the way of other remedies prescribed upon purely patho-
genetic indications, any more than the Cod’s Oil; and under proper regulations
he believes may be continued indefinitely. - . .
The Dr. has promised to elaborate his report, and we hope hereafter to to be
able more fully and satisfactorily to present his views and experience in the
direction indicated. - - - -
XX. Compression of the brain. DR. G. E. SHIPMAN presented notes of this
case, which read as follows:
Dec. 24th, 758. , I was called about 4 P. M., to see Mrs. P—, a lady about
62 years of age, who had been suffering for 27 years or thereabouts, with
frequently recurring attacks of pain in the stomach—cramp-like pain, attended
with vomiting, and passing off in two or three days. These attacks had been
much lighter for the past month. Some six or seven years ago, when living in
Maine, her stomach was relieved, but she suffered from some affection of the
brain for five months, which was finally cured by taking Croton Oil which re-
produced the trouble in the stomach.
At the time above noted she was talking with the family, apparently in as
good health as ever, but suddenly ceased conversing in the midst of a sentence.
Her daughter looking up in a moment saw her left cheek reddened and the left
eye blood-shot, and soon observed that the old lady was totally unconscious—
could neither see nor speak. She was got upon the sofa directly, some slight
convulsions of the jaw ensued, and soon after she vomited up her dinner, which
had not been more hearty than usual. I saw her within thirty minutes of the
attack: she was then lying on her back quite unconscious, breathing sterterous,
face flushed and swollen, pupils insensible and somewhat dilated, pulse a little
quickened but soft and regular; a spoon was still between her teeth to prevent
her biting her tongue. I was misled by the account given me, and thought I
had a case of temporary congestion of the brain, from over-eating or some
other cause, and gave her at first strong Coffee every few moments, then Cem-
phor and water; but after watching her for several hours and enquiring more
particularly into the case, I concluded it to be a more serious one. She was
put upon Bell, and Opium. In the morning she was about the same, but shewed
slight and doubtful signs of consciousness, breathing was more regular and
without stertor, with occasional flashes of febrile excitement, pulse 120, respir-
ation about 30. r -
This state of things continued with but little change for three or four days
and nights, during which time the remedies used were mainly Bell, and Opium

with 4conite occasionally. Her lingering so long without growing apparently
worse, led her friends and myself to cherish a hope that something might yet
be done. Drs. Small and Boardman were called in about the third day.
Sinapisms between the shoulders and upon the legs were tried, injections con-
taining Groton Oil, and finally Croton Oil by the mouth three drops every six
hours, but without avail. During the last thirty-six hours of her life her pulse
and respiration became gradually more rapid, but the pulse did not become
any weaker until Wednesday P. M.–the fifth day. Her respiration at this
time was 42-44, and the pulse about 130 to 140. She gradually sunk away and
died at nine P. M. -
Post-Mortem. Appearances.—Twenty-four hours after death we examined the
body. The right side of the brain seemed healthy although the meningeal
vessels were distended, as were also those distributed through the substances
of the brain, as shown by minute red spots wherever a section of the brain was
made. In the left hemisphere a clot was found as large as a hen’s egg distending
and lacerating the ventricle. There was evident congestion of the vessels of
the spinal cord as the blood-continued to discharge from them as long as the
head was allowed to hang down. . . . . .
The stomach was also examined. The integuments of the abdomen were
well provided with fat, there being a layer of nearly half an inch in thickness.
The stomach was smaller than natural and showed signs of inflammation of a
sub-acute character; some softening of the villous coat was also observed.
I should have stated before, that the right side was partially paralysed,toward
the close perhaps entirely so, while the left side was by turns quite sensitive.
XXI. D.R. S. SEYMoUR made a verbal report of a case analagous to the
foregoing. . . . - - -
A lady had been for many years subject to an excruciating headache, with a
boring, digging pain in the left side of the head. The paroxysms became
frequent, and would then subside for a week or so. This ran on for five or six
years. For the last two or three weeks of her life, however, it was almost
continuous. Finally she experienced a paralysis of the left side, and some
time after died. Post-Morten examination revealed a projection of bone, about
the centre of the left parietal bone, of the size of half a hen’s egg, though a little
more conical in shape. The brain, save in the immediate neighborhood, was
perfectly healthy; the external conformation of the skull quite natural. We
never could discover, nor could she recollect that she had ever sustained an
injury from a blow or anything of that sort. Both the lesion and the hemiplegia
were upon the left side. At her death this patient was fifty years of age. Being
an allopathist at that time, I administered the various anodynes, but these at last
ſost their effect, and I could really do nothing for her. It was of course quite
impossible to make out a correct diagnosis ante mortem.
XXII. Specifics. By J. L. KELLOGG, M. D.
In considering the subject of Specifies I shall at the outset admit the exis-
tence and potency of some general laws, as expansion by heat, attraction of
gravitation, etc., in general physics; and of the law represented by “Similia
Similibus Curantur,” pertaining as generally to the medicinal action of drugs

—indicating the specific remedy for disease as the plummet indicates the direc-
tion toward the centre of the earth, or the compass the position of the poles.
These great principles of Nature exert a modifying influence upon all bodies.
but are in themselves inadequate to produce or elucidate the innumerable forms
of being and phenomena of Nature by which we are surrounded. To attempt
the solution of the problen of the universe solely by the agency of these gener-
al principles, I think will be found quite irrational as we proceed.
This tendency to generalization in Medicine, has led men quite eminent in
the profession to teach the dogma that, to successfully combat “all diseases
which flesh is heir to,” the physician requires only Calomel. Opium, Antimony
and the lancet—directed in their use by what are termed the “general princi-
ples of Medicine.” To combat in some degree this heroic and baneful error,
which pervades the mind of the profession to an unwarrantable extent, I offer
for your reflection the following considerations:
When we attempt from the point of causation to conceive the origin and mode
of existence of the beings and substances by which we are surrounded, the
mind can only save itself from chaotic stultification by assuming the existence
and energy of Specific forces. The truth of this assumptiom is clearly demon-
strated when we start from the opposite end of the Series and proceed analyti-
cally from effect to cause. .
Let us look for a moment at the globe we inhabit. The law of attraction of
cohesion holds its primitive particles in close proximity, and thus are formed
the central nuclei of all substances, Add to this the law of gravitation, and
the lesser bodies are merged in the greater, and retained in situ. This, being
a general law, extends its potency to distant planets and systems, and the
knowledge of it becomes a golden key by which are unlocked many of the
stupendous mysteries of the Universe. In penetrating the globe, we find for-
mations and depositions arranged in definite order, always holding specific
relations to each other, insomuch that, certain formations being given an adept
in Geology, other formations may be described by him, and their relative
positions indicated. In chemical combinations the same evidence of a specific
law is found to exist. Atom unites with atom according to a definite law of its
nature. And in obedience to these laws of combination, all mineral compounds
exist—from the scintillating diamond which sparkles and glows a thing of light,
to the dull clay which we thoughtlessly trample beneath our feet. It has been
ascertained by Chemistry, even in its present imperfect state of development, -
that all substances which make up the sum of the world may be reduced to a
catalogue of about sixty in number. From these simples are produced, by
specific laws peculiar to each, this wondrous world of diverse forms and almost
infinite qualities. -
Keep the mind fixed upon the astonishing and fundamental fact, that all we
behold of physical existence is the result of various combinations of (in round
numbers) some half a hundred simple substances, and we will proceed to
glance cursorily at some few of the facts pertaining to vegetable existence.
Imagine, with me, these half hundred simples to be contained in one grand
reservoir, awaiting the mandate of Specific law, and note the wondrous issues -

and the bearings they have upon the question under consideration. By virtue
of a specific force contained within its germ, the Aloe draws or devolops from
these original elements the intensest bitter. From the same source the Sugar
cane, by the law of its existence, elaborates. its saccharine qualities. Also
from the same source springs forth the majestic oak—at whose base we behold
in wondrous contrast the tiniest shrub. By what reason but Specific law can
we account for the vast difference existing between the magnitude of their
proportions and the qualities of their composition? -
Let us pass to the consideration of some illustrations of this law afforded by
the floral kingdom. What human mind could have conceived the varieties
which Nature presents to our view! In form, how unique and graceful; in
color, how distinct and brilliant in some varieties, in others how exquisitely
shaded and blended are their magnificent hues, and in others still how distinct-
ly diversified! And most wonderful of all, how definitely true is each to the
specific law of its organization. Side by side stand the thistle and the rose—
the nasturtion and the sweet-pea—thh honeysuckle and the trumpet-flower—
by proximity frequently intertwining their blossoms, but still, in obedience to
the specific law of their existence, each maintaining with the integrity of truth, -
its own individuality. . . .
These remarks apply to fruits as well as to flowers. Everywhere among
them also, we shall find the evidence of a specific law, no less distinctly mani-
fest—definite, unvarying forms, characteristic colors, diversified odors and
flavors, with each variety'so distinct as to be readily described, and so invari-
able in its individuality as not to be mistaken for another. But for the existence
of such specific laws, applied to the products of the Vegetable kingdom, the
beautiful Science of Botany could not be known or studied. * * * * *
Next we have an application of the argument to the forms and features of
animal existence. The Dr. says:- .
And here, notwithstanding the perfect distinctness of varieties, both in the
Vegetable and Animal kingdoms, still the two approach each other so gradu-
ally that it is as difficult for the senses to determine the exact confines of each,
as for the eye to determine at the close of the day the precise moment when
light ceases and darkness obtains dominion over the fading beauties of the
evening landscape. But, be it the sponge or any other substance that forms the
wondrous link, one thing is certain—it yields distinct obedience to the law of
its nature, by that law becoming definitely the creature it is, drawing in ae-
cordance therewith from the common reservoir of simples the covering or
habitation of its essential force, and through the medium of that external cover-
ing, manifesting to our senses the outlines of its character. Once entered
upon the domain of the animal kingdom, our attention is as distinctly challeng-
ed to specific modes of existence as when surveying the vegetable forms of
life. For a moment go back into the dim distance of the earliest era of animal
life—pierce through the crusts of the globe until you descend to the fossil re-
mains of its pioneers, and you will find, from the stellar-formed being upward,
evidence of the action of undeviating specifle forces, monlding from the reser-
voir of original simples each in accordance with its peculiar law, a saurin or a


shell-fish, and these so various yet so distinct, as to form the basis of many of
the Natural Sciences. In short, everywhere, in every species of vegetable
and animal, are found these distinctive marks of Specific law. By them the
comparative anatomist will tell you by a single bone from what animal it came,
And these qualities are so definite that should we carefully note them, the
individuals of any species might be identified. The shepherd learns to know
the individual members of his flock and will recognize an estray coming into,
or lost from his ſold; the dog will select from the common highway the peculiar
quality retained in his master's track and reach him by this means alone,
though every other indication of the course he had taken be blotted out.
Ornithology presents us with some most pleasing illustrations of these laws,
but we may not pause to quote them. Let it suffice then, so far as the general
consideration of the subject is concerned, to remark that without the existence
of such laws, there would and could be no science of Natural History, since
the history of these invariable specific qualities forms the sum total of the
ponderous volumes which make up that department of literature,
We pass therefore to the consideration of specific forces as they exist in man,
for the cure of whose maladies our profession was instituted. The most pal-
pable object which meets our senses is his body, which like all other tangible
things, is composed from the half hundred original simples drawn together by
internal specific forces. These occult forces by virtue of their specific powers,
each forming their peculiar organs, and appropriating to each organ its specific
function; these grouped and brought into harmonious action by a force
peculiar to the ganglionic system of nerves, constitute this vast assemblage
of forces, this being which we denominate man. , . . . . . . -
osteology with all its detail of processes, foramina and articulations, distinct-
ly reveals the operation of specific law, by whose power the proper elementary
particles were arranged in the bony frame-work with such definite regard to
the purposes they were designed to subserve. About and within this skeleton
are arranged the various organs of the economy, by whose specific actions the
functions of the organism are performed. Every organ has its function:-the
Brain, or portions it, to elaborate or manifest thought:—the nerves of animal
life to communicate intelligence from the external world to this secluded seat
of mind, and thence returning to convey to subordinate organs the mandates
of the imperial will. Through these avenues of communication, each organ
of sense becomes informer to the grand sensorium of what exists and transpires,
within the laws of its limitations, in the universe without. Thus the organs
of the sense of sight convey to the mind a large amount of knowledge within
certain boundaries and under certain conditions. But beyond its scope in all
directions lie immense fields glowing with wonders, and which, unaided, it
cannot explore. Immense magnitudes it cannot compass, minute substances
though teeming with life and beauty and perfection of organization, or hideous
and ferocious in their forms and instincts, become cognizable only when the
subtle energies of the brain have placed between this organ and these minute
objects the wonder-moving microscope. Great velocity—intense light-deep
darkness—very close proximity or great remotenºs, with mºny other circum-
stances define limits of its power.

The sense of hearing has an organ also for its specific purpose; and so of all
the special senses. Their functions are definite, specific, comprehensive, and
yet subject to limitation. So it is with the whole digestive and assimilative
apparatus, whose function as a unit, is to change foreign and crude substances
into its own vitalized organism, to build up and repair its physical structure
and to maintain its perfect integrity. The whole physiology of life is a com-
mentary on Specific law. * * * * * * * *
Let us now consider that condition of the organism to which our profession is
more appropriately related—its pathological condition. Having seen that each
organ is peculiar in structure and definite in function, performing its operations
through the action of stimulants proper to itself, is it not reasonable to suppose
that disturbing causes would be such as have a peculiar relation and natural
determination of such organ? Leaving out of account for a moment the action
of the Sympathetic system of nerves, I think we can arrive at no other conclu-
sion than that each organ must become diseased by itself, though it may be
synchronously with other organs, by some force having definite relations to
each organ so disturbed. If now we link these various organs together by
means of the ganglionic nerves, it must be apparent that general disturbance
must ensue throughout the organism as inevitably as harmony was established
through the same agency, while each organ maintained the integrity of its in-
dividual action. It is admitted that some general causes as sudden and great
changes of temperature, may disturb to a greater or less degree every organ
of the economy. But it may well be doubted if these general influences are
sufficient to establish a pathological condition of the organism while each organ is
left free from the action of disturbing forces having direct relation to such
organ. The harmonious antagonism of the different organs will be found suf-
ficient to establish an equilibrium or health, unless as in case of excessive cold,
or intense heat, or excessive electrical changes, the powers which resist death
are blotted out. - - . . . -
Wherever, therefore, we find permanent and continued indisposition, we should
seek the cause of that indisposition in some disturbing force, having a definite
relation to one or more of the constitutional organs of the system; or in those
semi-organic rudiments, the fluids, which must be recognized as such in passing
from simple alimentary substances into the tissues of the various organs them-
selves. There is no instant in which we can conceive them changed from the
one to the other condition. That these fluids may be specifically diseased
originally there can be but little doubt. Miasms of various kinds reach them
through the organs of respiration; and still more directly affect them by inoc-
ulation. And here, as elsewhere, we find specific causes producing definite
results. # * * * * * * * * * *
The common opinion has been that cases of disease were general agencies
acting upon the organism, and that the varieties observed in diseases were the
results of accidental conditions existing in different individuals subjected to
these general influences—producing in one person Croup, in another Cholera
Morbus etc. Indeed it is more than suspected that for centuries the Small Pox
itself was considered a disease resulting from general causes—and to be treated
upon general principles. . . . . . . . . . . . .

No physician who has practiced his profession long and observingly can have
failed to notice that diseases are generally gregarious. If we have one case of
Membraneous Croup, we soon have, or hear of, others in the same vicinity. At
one time every exposure to cold in followed by an Influenza, and during these
periods many will have the Influenza who are confident they have not been ex-
posed to any chill. Again, sore-throats prevail; or dysentery, acute or chronic;
or at irregular intervals Typhus fever sweeps over the country a general pesti-
lence, while again, years may transpire without a single case of it; or Inter-
mittents, Yellow fever, Scarlatina, Pertussis, Erysipelas, etc., etc. Some of
these diseases are known to be the result of a specific force, as we are able to
produce them at will. Others are admitted to be the result of specific mia Sms,
though we are wholly unable to detect the presence of the virus in the atmo-
sphere, and only become conscious of its existence by the diseases which follow
in its train—as intermittents, cholera, yellow fever, etc. -
From thºse facts we learn that all diseases, whose causes are definitely known
are the results of Specific forces acting upon the organism in accordance with
the laws of their own existence, producing morbid impressions peculiar to
themselves. Is it not hence more reasonable to infer that those diseases of
whose causes we are not informed are also the result of specific forces peculiar
to each, (4) than to suppose, in opposition to the general course of Nature,
that they result from accidental and incongruous agencies? -
The erroneousness of a position is many times best illustrated by the absur-
dity of its results. Let us enquire into the results which have followed from
the assumption of general causes of disease, and general principles, as they
are termed, in the application of remedies to their cure. The central root of
this mode of reasoning in pathology seems to start from the seminal idea of the
ancients, that all disease was a vague something of general diffusion in crude
condition pervading the system which must by some means be concocted or
cooked and then expelled by a natural crisis or some medicinal evacuant,
From the days of Hippocrates, with slight alterations, the profession has been
engaged by general laws in cocting these morbific agents, and afterward by
irritants exciting the various emunotory organs of the body, hoping by these
discharges to purge the system of its impurities. But, say these early philos-
ophers, it may happen that coction could not be effected, or only imperfectly.
In such cases we must again recur to our general principles, and excite the
general forces of the system ’till either the patient dies, or we are enabled to
expel the morbific matter. In view of the history of Medicine and its results,
we find among the most experienced and erudite of the profession, individuals
who unhesitatingly declare that Medicine as thus practiced, has cursed as
many as it has cured. Indeed statistics prove the expectant plan more success-
ful than the enlightened generalizations of those who are treading with conser-
vative zeal and unvarying “regularity” in the faintly expressed footsteps of
their “illustrious predecessors.” # * * * * *
These positions are well taken by Dr. K., and sustained by ample illustra-
tion of the published opinions of some of the most eminent names in the pro-
fession—Bichat, Broussais, Bouillaud, M. Louis and others. We may not
quote them at length, but append the applieation. -

Such being the result of the observations and experiments of the most gifted
and learned of the profession, can any unbiassed mind of common capacity
fail to perceive that it were better for mankind to “throw physic to the dogs,”
and leave Nature's recuperative powers unmolested to re-establish harmony
among its disturbed organs? Or, in view of these disastrous results flowing
from the attempt to follow as an established principle, the mere hypothesis that
disease and remedies are general and not specific in their nature and action—
does it not seem that nothing else than blind routinism, or over-weening self-
conceit could lead one farther to pursue this ignus fatuus of the brain along
the blood-stained paths so fruitlessly trodden through many centuries, by men
whose discernment we well may envy, and whose eminence we can never hope
to attain? In vain has the alchemist sought a law by which to transmute the
baser metals into gold—the mechanic to construct a machine capable of self-
sustaining, perpetual motion; and the physician to discover a general law of
Therapeutics, applicable alike to all tissues and localities, operating simultane-
ously upon all organs, however various in structure or diseased in function.
The reason of failure is the same in each case. All are alike attempting to
force Nature to abandon the Creator's laws and yield herself to the control
of the vagaries of a disordered imagination. If it be true that specific laws
produce each organ and control its function, and that specific causes produce
derangements of the various functions, does it not become self-evident that
specific remedies, having natural relations to the organs affected, must be the
appropriate means of restoring normal action?
A system of Medicine, to be in harmony with what we know of the nature
of things, must be specific in its operations; and the fact that we are yet in-
capable of discerning the causes and fine distinctions existing in the aberrant
action called disease—or of discerning the nicer pathogenetic action of remedies
does not absolve us from the duty to seek ox—much less does it annihilate the
existence of an etermal principle of Nature. -
Let us pursue this subject a little farther, as illustrated by Allopathic writ-
ings In their Materia Medica we find a partial acknowledgement of the
special specific action and determination of medicines, in the arrangement of
drugs into classes, as Emetics, Cathartics, Tonics, Diuretics, Alteratives, etc.
This principle is further admitted in the sub-divisions of each class, theoretically
and still more practically made, when all judicious practitioners point out
Antimony as the Emetic for one case, Ipecac. for a different one, or for others
Sulphate of Zinc or Mustard Seed. . • ,
Some Cathartics are said to act specifically upon the exhalents, as hydrago-
gues; some upon the liver and the salivary glands, and some upon the rectum.
And so on through all the classes of the Materia Medica. The distinctions
certainly point to the specific determinations and actions of these remedies.
In that class of remedies termed Alteratives we shall find included by the
practice of the profession (if not so stated in the books) nearly all the articles
included in the Materia Medica. These remedies are defined to be “those
medicines which are given with a view to re-establish the healthy functions of the
Animal economy, without producing any sensible evacuation.“ In this class
upon what hypothesis, except that of specific action, can an intelligent physician

select his remedies for administration? What would lead him to prefer Ipecac. to
Antimony in Dyspepsia; for Piles, Sulphur instead of Gamboge; or for affec-
tions of the liver, Mercury rather than Magnesia? In short, is it not apparent
that while stoutly decrying the specific use of medicines, yet the great differ-
ence in skill exhibited among physicians, results mainly from the different
degrees of knowledge they possess respectively of the various local determina-
tions and peculiar actions of medicines? . . . . .
If we consult that portion of our medical Journals devoted to “Practical
Medicine” we shall find but little said of General Principles. The great mass
of their contents will be found to be made up of accounts of particular remedies
which have proven successful in particular cases.* - -
Further on the Dr. remarks: -
I can construe the use of the multiplicity of remedies, each successful in
one case, and each futile in others, into nothingless than incontestible evidence
that diseases of the same nosological class may and do depend upon distinct
specific causes, and require for their cure different remedies having specific
relations to each. And I must consider this department of the Allopathic
literature as nothing more nor less than a catologue of specific remedies dis-
covered by accident or experiment, authoratively published by the Journals,
and “regularly" and impirically practiced by the profession. . .
Admitting the doctrine of Specifics to be established, I am aware that it
presents before the profession an extensive and intricate, labyrinthine way to
be traversed. But we should not be discouraged in our investigations by the
seeming impossibility of their successful issue. * * * * One fact should
inspire us with courage and hope—that ideas are immortal, that though our
bodies die, our truthful thoughts are indestructible and cumulative, that suc-
ceeding minds will take up the investigation and start from the results of our
life-long researches. . * * * * * * # * *
In view of the achievements already made in the collateral Sciences, who will
be so brave a coward as to talk of the impossibility of success in the direction
which we point? I am aware that Medicine is not ranked among the Exact
Sciences. The same, and with equal propriety, might have be affirmed of
Astronomy when its professors were Astrologers. But such assertions in either
Cà86. have no effect upon the Natural laws pertaining to these subjects. When-
ever the laws of Nature have been comprehended, their action has been found to
be specific and unchanging, and doubtless will be found equally so in Medicine.
Indeed any other view would remand one subject of Creative wisdom back to

“Disease, as Brown and Rush have said of life, ‘is a forced ,
state; it is never spontaneous.”" The term has been variously
defined. It, however, represents what is opposite to, the con-
trast, and negative of health.f “Looking to Anatomy and
Physiology as standards, we may define disease to be, a changed
condition or proportion of function or structure in ame or more
parts of the body.”f Physiology comprehends a knowledge of
the functions, forms, forces, and elements of life. Pathology is
a morbid physiology; a science which searches out the essential
nature, causes, and characteristics of all the variations from
regularity in the actions performed by living beings, and which
together, constitute the phenomena of disease. Pathology is
based upon a correct system of anatomy and physiology. It may
be true, however, as some have taught, that pathology is the key
to physiology, that we should know but little “of the circula-
tion without congestion and inflammation, or of the nerves with-
out convulsion, neuralgia, and paralysis;”; yet is the converse
of this most certainly true. These fundamental branches of our
science must consequently be the same in all the schools. It is
upon the Ars Medendi, or the art of healing, that physicians
are found to differ. It is the question of squaring the art to the
science which more than any other separates and distracts the
great medical mind. . . . . .
Now we are not of those, who, because of having given in their
adhesion to a law in therapeutics, pretend to ignore all patho-
logical research. We would know somewhat more of disease
than the simple fact that we may have set it aside unwittingly,

It is not sufficient to content us with recognizing only the pa-
thogenetic effects of our remedies, and their value as means of
cure. That were to leave our work as physicans but half accom-
plished. The overgrown catalogue of symptoms pickled away
among the choicer meats of JAHR and his fellows, fail, and very
naturally, to satisfy one's thirst for science as applied to the
great end of healing. Here is a duality in medicine,—two hemis-
pheres, and we are but half-learned, or half-travelled, if we ac-
cept the one and deny the other. To be a good pathologist does
not make a man a good physician; neither is he fitted to be
classed as such who knows nothing but the pathogenesy of drugs.
Pathology and therapeutics have a common aim—to unravel
disease; and their mission loses none of its interest because
the field chances to lie between their two points of departure.
We are now speaking of that department of general pathology
which relates to ante-mortem phenomena. The details of mor-
bid anatomy may prove more interesting than valuable, and are
seldom of real worth unless free from the tokens of a gross
medication. “It can be seen at first glance, that a departed
person has gone off and left his cadaver with, perhaps, a tumor
on it about the size of a cocoa-nut, and of the consistence of
white-oak cheese. But that does not tell us the half, and is, in
truth, a very useless piece of intelligence if we do not associate
with it an immense amount of other intelligence. The tumor is
not the disease, nor does it tell much about its antecedents, nor
does it more than hint at all the consequents of the disease. * *
* * To look at that man’s cadaver with persevering penetration
will not enable us to persuade the next man not to leave his ca-
daver in the same way. We fear there has been a fearful waste
of material in this cutting-up business. Cutting-up must be
done. There can be no getting at the truth in a cytoblast with-
out it. But let it be done with the expectation of finding only
the coarse and altered illustration of a small part of the com-
plex processes which preceded death.” It is the misapplication
of this species of intelligence which has introduced so many
classical errors into the detailed history and teachings of morbid

Nor can pathology and pathological anatomy be divorced. To
classify the former as consisting only, or essentially, in a recog-
inition of the more sensible symptoms denoting inflammation, for
example, or the latter in the details of a never-failing lesion,
left as a sort of “legacy or sign” to the surviving doctor, were
to restrict them to a mean and narrow capacity unworthy of
either. Indeed, if the consideration of either be valuable, it
must embrace a knowledge of the essential causes, as well
as the functional and structural consequences of the attack—
provided always these same be not so subtle and recondite as
altogether to escape our recognition. -
We notice severally each of the sub-divisions of General Pa-
thology—Eriology, SYMPToMATology, DIAGNosis and PROG-
Nosis. . . . . . -
To be successful in a contest, depends equally upon a know-
ledge of the topography of a battle-field, and the various con-
tingencies which may tend to a defeat, as upon a confidant reli-
ance on our aim and ammunition. We should also know the in-
mate and characteristic nature of the foe we have to deal with
else our brightest hopes are worth but little, and the odds are
against us. SYMPTOMATOLOGY gives us the topography of
disease; Etiology, the motive which prompted its invasion;
TMAGNosis, the characteristic peculiarities of our enemy; and
PROGNosis, the beacon-light to pilot and passenger, .

Applied to the subject before us, as indeed throughout the
whole domain of nature, cause and effect are invariable co-rela-
tives. The causes of disease are very numerous. They lie
about and within us, on every hand, and embrace whatever is
foreign to the necessities of a purely physiological state of sys-
tem—whatever is not really called for among the wants of the
healthy organism. To these influences are we constantly sub-
ject. A complete exemption therefrom would afford that abso-
lute anomaly in physical life which we are accustomed to style
perfect health. We need not enumerate them. For the pre-
sent purpose it is sufficient to include them all under the three
general heads of Accidental, Incidental, and Artificial causes
of disease. . . . -

- a. The AccidentAL causes—Under this head, we include
all those extrinsic agents to the production of disease which are
ordinarily narrated by, writers on pathology. They are the ex-
citing causes of the old authors. WILLIAMs" divides them into
cognizable and non-cognizable agents. The subjoined table

We need not detail particular examples of disease from one
or another of these various sources; nor pause to speculate
upon their modus operandi. Suffice it to say that each and all
of them possess inherent properties capable of engendering dis-
ease, in some one or more of its many phases. Acting under
very diversified states of system, and modified in a thousand
ways by the contingencies of constitutional predisposition, age,
sex, habit, location, &c., &c., they are nevertheless inherently
and individually adequate to the production of that morbid con-
dition we familiarly term disease. The varieties of consequent
disorder are endless. We witness them hourly. To humanity
they are become a common inheritance—of our fraternity, the
almost invincible foes. Let it be borne in mind that these agents
are now spoken of with reference to their effects upon the healthy
system. The perturbation, or perversion, which they occasion
is synonymous with disease, “and does not imply a simple differ-
ence in force, marked by the characters of plus or minus.”f
b. The INCIDENTAL, or intrinsic causes.—Literally inter-
preted, these are not causes, but mere contingencies of disease
! ... or disorder. They are the old-style predisposing causes. We

use the word predisposition as implying a passive state or con-
dition on the part of the subject himself. Nor is this condition
necessarily incompatible with that of health. Removed from
the influence of accidental agents afore-named, a state of com-
parative exemption from disease and its consequences may bless
a long life, though all the while the germ of suffering lies dor-
mant within. Nevertheless a peculiar diathesis may of itself
furnish the essential phenomena of disease. All this is sup-
posed to be understood by the reader. . . . . . . . .
The principal effects of the causes under consideration are
found in a modification of the phenomena more directly tracea-
ble to the operation of the other two classes of agencies. This
explains them as contingent upon the others.

1. Idiosyncratic, or personally constitutional.
2. Parental, or hereditarily “

Acquired predisposition is:—
1. Normal, or 3. Transient, or
2. Morbid. 4. Permanent."
Examples of disease engrafted upon one or more of these con-
tingences are quite too common to demand a mention here, and
we leave it to the reader to summon them at pleasure as we pro-
ceed. The predisposing pathological tendencies of the subject
will modify his disease, and, reasoning from effect to cause, we
must be able to recognize the former, in order the more certainly
and safely to comprehend the latter. The influence of the dif
ferent temperaments, age, sex, habits of life, occupation, &c.,
&c., likewise afford the theme for very interesting and profitable
study. This, however, pertains to the province of special pa-
thology, and we pass to the consideration of
c. The ARTIFICIAL causes of disease.—Under this head we
arrange all those drugs, or medicaments, having specific affini-
ties for particular tissues and organs of the body, and which,
administered in HEALTH, will more or less readily occasion
disorders of the functional or structural system. They might

peculiar to itself.”
also be termed voluntary causes, since their effects are induced
at pleasure, and for the express purpose of instituting a com-
parison, or drawing a parallel, between them and such as follow
the operation of the accidental, or more ordinary causes.
The members of this class, as of the first or accidental vari-
ety, are each possessed of individual and specific properties.
Administered to the healthy subject, their poisonous or mis-
chievous effects are more or less readily evinced by symptoms
plainly signifying some morbid invasion of the functions of
the economy. The law holds good that, in common, “each is
possessed of an individuality—a specificity—a modus medemdi
We do not speak of these artificial agencies as being adequate
to the production of bona fide diseases, as we find these latter
nosologically arranged in our works upon the practice. Cincho-
na may not () develop a true intermittent, as classified and di-
agnosed by Wood, or Watson, or Bartlett; while it is neverthe-
less a fact that it may, and will occasion, in certain subjects, an
analogous set of symptoms. Its operation, like that of miasm,
or whatever it is which develops an ordinary intermittent, is lia-
ble to a similar modification by the predisposing pathological
tendencies, temperament, &c., of the patient. The incidental
causes must play their part in both. - * -

mus, Stramonium, Hellebore, &c., while yet it is possible to de-
velop such a train of morbific symptoms as shall closely coun-
terfeit this same accidental process, and which physicians are
frequently called upon to cure. Carry the experiment far
enough, however, and morbid anatomy confirms our suspicions.
The symptoms capable of being produced by Mercury, Anti-
mony, Ipecac, Arsenic, Aloes, Colocynth, and every other reme-
dy, so-called, afford an aggregate simile or counterpart of all the
morbid changes referable to the operation of such agencies as
are ordinarily accepted in the etiology of disease. These arti-
ficial disorders may not be identical with such as we see in eve-

ry-day practice, but we do find them as certainly and easily sus-
ceptible of scientific classification and arrangement as are the
known effects proceeding from any other set of causes.
But “the principle of Homoeopathy—‘Similia Similibus
Curantur’—is a theory of cure and not of disease.” Hence
the necessity of setting a boundary or limit to experimentation
with these voluntary agencies; and the key also to the fact that
the revelations of morbid anatomy are of much less significance
to, the practical Homoeopath, than are the teachings of that
more available and agreeable department of pathology to which
our attention is principally directed. . . . .
Thus much being established, and the propositions advanced
are such as recommend themselves to inquiring minds, it is ob-
vious that “the only correct method of learning the pathogene-
tic character of drugs is by their trial upon the healthy. This
method, even in the days of empiricism, and in the schools of
theoretical medicine, has been acknowledged as a good one, if
not the best. Yet, till the time of Hahnemann, it was never
followed with any practical success.”f
Take again the two general classes of agencies to the produc-
tion of disease. If, for the sake of available knowledge, we
classify the symptoms pertaining to the operation of the one
variety, then why not those which belong to the other? If the
symptoms which follow the introduction into the system of marsh
miasm be of real practical import, why then are not those pe-
culiar to and capable of being produced by Mercury 2 If the
former operate in attenuated doses, why may not the latter also?
If the pathologist recognizes the feeblest impressions of an ac-
cidental influence through or by means of the phenomena accru-
ing, why need the physician question the evidence of voluntary
impressions induced upon the same medium?
Moreover, if without this detailed knowledge we cannot pos-
sibly comprehend the properties and special characteristics of
miasmata, how shall we, except through a like means, be fitted
to recognize those belonging to Mercury? The cases are strictly

parallel. In both the exciting cause is not a necessity of, but
foreign to the animal economy. The only difference between
them lies in the fact that mankind are not subject alike to their
mischievous influences—the one is an accidental, the other an
artificial occasion of disorder. The parallel might be still more
closely drawn, but our limits forbid. ' . . .
Special pathology and special pathogenesy are the rails which
reach to our destination, and the car of TRUE MEDICAL SCI-
ENCE cannot roll upon either the one or the other, exclusively

a host of engineers, for over two thousand years, and their suc-
cess in running at long intervals from station to station, is at-
tributable to the fact of their stumbling occasionally upon the
second rail—an aid, a means, with which, did they but know it,
the principle Similia would not fail always to supply them.
2. SYMptom Atology. . . .
Symptomatology is a most interesting branch of Pathology.
A correct and intimate knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology
are essential requisites to its proper study. If we know what
is normal, we are the better fitted to recognise the abnormal;
just as the fact of being familiar in our every-day intercourse
with the points of perfection in physical development, unwittingly
educates the eye to the detection of deformity.
Symptoms are the appreciable signs of disease or disorder.
They are sometimes mistaken for the disease itself, of which they
are in reality but the outward tokens. BAYLE first classified
symptoms into physical and vital. Our limits forbid us taking
up these classes singly, and we accordingly treat of them in a
general sense. -
To the mere pathologist—he who dwells upon the morbid pro-
cesses going on within his fellow, delighting in the detailed tes-
timony of symptoms, superficial and recondite, toward establish-
ing his favorite science—independent of its relations to “the
Divine Art of Healing,” as Homer hath it, they furnish an am-
ple theme for his noblest and most manly powers. To the phy-
sician, who digests all the knowledge of the former, that he may
assimilate with it a special, careful and comprehensive detail of
drug-symptoms, to the end of healing and mitigating human in-
firmities, they afford a sublime and delightful study.

We have seen that the phenomena of disease and of drugs, or
natural and artificial disorders, are very similar.
It is the province of Symptomatology to complete this parallel.
Setting out with the simplest and most elementary ailments,
transient and trifling departures from the normal physiological
status, the resemblances are of easy recognition. But compli-
cated with the reactions of the organism, and modified by nu-
merous contingencies, it becomes more difficult to discern and to
keep in view their similarity, and at the same time their indivi-
duality. We arrange our remarks under a few general heads.
a. To whatever source attributable, symptoms have a chrono-
logical order in their development and manifestations. The cause
or agent thereof may propagate its impressions through the
nervous or the circulatory systems, or it may operate exclusive-
ly in the neighborhood of its application; but, nevertheless, the
order of its manifestations constitutes a marked feature in their
history. This is a very important item in the study of the pa-
thogenesy of drugs, as of pathology proper, since it must have an
important bearing upon our Therapeutics. “Rhythm in disease
is nothing else than the rhythm of the normal vital process it-
self;” so disease, of whatever variety, must be due to the pri-
mary or subsequent operation of certain agencies acting intelli-
gibly or otherwise.
b. Ordinary ailments have what are styled their pathogno-
monic, as well as their idiopathic, symptoms. The same is true
of those extraordinary disorders due to the operation of drugs.
Hence the loose and empirical classification of remedies into
Emetics, Cathartics, Diuretics, Diaphoretics, Expectorants, Em-
menagogues, Sedatives, Stimulants, &c., &c. Hence, too, such
confessions as the following from an eminent Allopathic autho-
rity:f “There is scarcely a single remedy in common use which
does not possess properties, in addition to the leading one upon
which its classification has been based, even more important than
this, that will render their employment proper and peculiarly
advantageous in forms of disease in which, judging alone from
their place in the lists of the Materia Medica, they would seem

to be absolutely contra-indicated.” Marshall HALL" in touch- - .
ing upon this subject, likewise declares : “We still want an essay
on the morbid effects of remedies.” And, what is worthy of
note, a more recent authort has promulgated the idea that
“remedies operate like morbific causes,” and that to cure dis-
ease, they must institute “a succession of pathological changes”
which shall displace the morbid conditions present. A like ac-
knowledgment of the power of drugs to produce their character-
istic idiopathic as well as their pathognomonic symptoms,
should speedily obtain with the whole profession. VogFLt re-
commends experimentation upon animals, and man also, with a
view to produce an artificial morbid condition, which, he alleges,
can be carefully studied, and will afford the most valuable aid,
since the quality and quantity of the causes in action are much
much more controllable than in ordinary cases of disease.
c. Granted that, whether the result of a pathogenetic or of a
morbid cause, the disease itself is “a forced state,” we must con-
clude its symptoms are given to signify the proving of this in-
dividual influence upon the economy. If we classify in detail
the course and characteristics of the one variety, the revelations
of the other can scarce be less significant. We must note them
both, and not alone in their bolder and more prominent outlines,
but likewise in those more delicate shades of expression which
frequently determine the selection of a proper remedy and its
consequent cure. Each works its own characteristic changes,
whether in the periphery or the penetralia of the system, and
we are to index those changes with a most scrupulous regard to
correctness. Over against the catalogue of symptoms grown
familiar through the study of Pathology proper, we are to place
such as indicate the particular effects of a few chosen agencies
operating upon the same medium.
d. Chronic ailments may be, and frequently are, secondary,
in which case their manifestations hold a less important relation-
ship to a primary cause; while, nevertheless, in instituting a
careful and appropriate treatment, their every possible shade of
expression must be taken into the account.

likewise is it true regarding the vital phenomena.
e. Whether we adopt the creed of the vitalist, and make our-
selves content to follow its principles in explanation of all the phe-
nomena yielded by a morbid physiology; or if we turn humoralist,
and accept its old-style dogmas on the one hand, or its more
modern and attractive chemico-physical doctrines on the other,
we shall find this truth substantially the same, viz.: All dis-
eases, not strictly chemical or mechanical in their origin, and
which do not tend to suffering and dissolution through the
operation of chemical or chemico-mechanical laws, have their
counterpart in the language of symptoms educed by artificial
means, and are most amenable to a Therapeia based upon
this peculiar signification. .
If we look to the perversions of health indigated by physical
signs—such as signify some disturbance in the functions of the
circulation, nutrition, secretion, or absorption, &c., we find,
with the exception of such as have originated and are curable as
aforesaid, the whole catalogue of our known ailments is included
under the head of diseases amenable to that other Law repre- -
sented by the motto, “Similia Similibus Curantur.” And so
From this stand-point, how beautiful a thing is the practical
science of Homoeopathy! She proves her remedies beforehand,
tries them on the physiological subject that she may ascertain
their pathological bearings. She prosecutes, and for herself, an
elementary analysis of organic physiology and chemistry, ap-
plies the true touch-stone of therapeutics to diseased parts and
tissues, even down to their proximate principles, and translates
the language of symptoms into a common and a comprehensive
dialect. Her interest and influences alike obtain from direct
experiment with medicinal agents upon the human body—not
with a view to their torical or even the chemical effects, such as
other systems have inflicted upon the inferior animals, but with
an eye to their true therapeutical relations where we most need
them.
That such results are, or may be, available in the practice of
medicine, is very evident. Indeed, we may style the symptoma-
tology of Homoeopathy—educed through the action and peculiar
properties of voluntary agents, and which runs the most singu-
larly parallel with disease in most of its phases—a sine qua

non in the scientific practice of our profession. We cannot prose
per without it. . . . . .
8. DIAGNosis. - -
This is the most important division of our subject. Diagnosis
constitutes the chief basis of pathology, as does symptomatology
of diagnosis; while nosology depends upon them both. -
From what has already been said, it will be inferred that the
practical advantages of a correct system of diagnosis, render it
a two-fold more valuable acquirement of the homoeopathic, than
of any other physician. If a nice discrimination of disease be a
necessary qualification of the “dominant” practitioner, much
more is it requisite for the intelligent and successful homoeopath
to possess it, since he is not only to weigh the significancy of
certain morbid revelations, and which he is expected to relieve or
supersede, but likewise, and in order to this, to balance these
symptoms with such other characteristics, as, if properly poised
and carefully chosen, are as certainly antidotal to the former as
are the alkalies to acids, or albumen to an over-dose of the Salts
of Bismuth, Copper, Mercury, or Tin.
The distinctive symptoms of different diseases require espe-
.cial and careful study. To learn to diagnose the various legiti-
mate disorders properly, is a pursuit in which but few excel.
And so is it true of the artificial ailments comprising an off-set
to the former. Their characteristic symptoms require especial
and careful study. One may not believe this until he sets him-
self to master the fund of interesting and valuable information
locked up in the pathogenesy of drugs. Here a new field opens
before him. He learns what the fraternity, as a body, has never
discovered or acknowledged—that drugs may cause as well as
cure disease, and that the classification of drug-symptoms is as
readily accomplished as of symptoms due to the more ordinary
and orthodox agencies.
But the utility of diagnosis is not wholly embraced in a mere
nosological classification of symptoms, to be marched out under
command of some such classic head or centurion as—“Disorders
of the circulatory or nervous, the secretory or absorbent sys-
tems " The simplest and least noticeable epi-phenomena, so-
styled, will sometimes point with unerring significancy to the

pathological lesion; aye, and to the pathogenetic remedy also.
“The more simple the symptoms presented to our notice, the
more certain is our diagnosis;” as the narrower the range of our
specifics, the more certain the cure. . .
Homoeopathy differs from empiricism in this essential particu-
lar—she recognizes the worth of individual symptoms, any one
of which may indicate a characteristic and corresponding reme-
dy. Her only specifics are, or may most properly be, directed
against separate symptoms, rather than against a whole group
of those morbid phenomena which our table-makers have graced
with a birth-right into the family of special pathology.
The classification of diseases may be quite necessary, but the
best nosologists from Cullen to Chapman, have by no means consi-
dered it as constituting the most important link between patho-
logy and therapeutics. Indeed, as we approach the domain of
quackery, we find this characteristic feature more and more
prominent; her whole itinerant brood are ready to match their
specifics against any given compound of symptoms, whether they
conclude them as aggregating consumption, apoplexy, epilepsy,
or what not. But “Nature is always like herself.” She delights
in detail, and abhors the lumping process. The fall of an apple
is more full of significancy to the eye of a Newton than is the
toppling of the tower of Siloam. If HAHNEMANN was swal-
lowed up in the study of these details, as showing the relations
and reactions between animal and vegetable, as well as inorganic
nature; if he ran his hopes into hypotheses, why, “the world
has a sure chemistry, by which it extracts what is excellent in
its children, and lets fall the infirmities and limitations of the
grandest minds.”
It is not within the province of diagnosis to inquire very fully
into the modus operandi of the changes, under process of in-
vestigation; but, instead thereof, “to learn to group symptoms
together, and to analyze them separately, in such a manner that
we may be able to apply to them a scheme, already supplied to
our hand, which shall, in some way, account for their existence,”
and likewise indicate the means to their removal. The patholo-
gist, of our day, avails himself of various appliances, in aid of

his calling. Physical, chemical and microscopical diagnosis shed
their light upon his researches. They exalt his theme to the
level, and grace it with the title of a liberal science. So with
the physician. Not one of these aids is useless in his hands;
he has learned that physical diagnosis may reduce an incoherent
symptomatology to a physical certainty; he knows its language
is not a dead, but a living one—its literature more valuable than
voluminous. Under his direction chemical physiology and toxico-
logy, microscopical and morbid anatomy are yielding the “peacea-
ble fruits’ peculiar to a well-developed and elaborate science.
We might speak at much greater length, but our limits forbid,
The theme is a noble one, and the only marvel is that it has
been so much neglected. If half the time and talent wasted
upon the popular discussion of our tenets, had been spent in
developing the rich stores of treasure hidden here, we should
not now have been left to look, almost in vain, over the records
of our special treatment, for those nicer shades of artistic and
scientific discrimination which characterize the detailed obser-
vations of some of our neighbors. .
We should strive to do away with the significantly domestic
character hitherto maintained. Literally to interpret the crud-
est phenomena, in the crudest possible manner, is not to develop
the science, or to deserve the name of physician. Emphatically
we must identify ourselves with the dearest interests of our call-
ing. We must learn to diagnose the different phases of disease,
resulting from the modifying conditions of climate, constitution,
temperament, predisposition, idiosyncrasy, characteristic epi-
demic tendency, &c., &c. Such details, drawn from nature by a
species of cross-examination, are to afford us the very informa-
tion we require; while, to the scientific and veritable homoeo-
pathist, it must ever be true that diagnostic indications are
likewise therapeutical indications. . . . . . -

To know the result from the beginning, or in any wise to an-
ticipate the course, duration, and event of a disease, is one of the
sublimest and most satisfactory departments of medical study
and experience. To balance the significancy of symptoms prog-
nostic of good or evil, with the powers held in reserve for their
removal, is both a delicate and a responsible undertaking.

The relations of prognosis to homoeopathic therapeutics must
be apparent to all. After what has been said of the teachings
of semeiology and diagnosis, we need not specify them. They
are of a peculiar and a responsible kind—peculiar, because, in
each individual case, their worth must balance alone with the
judgment of the medical adviser; responsible, since upon them
will frequently hinge not only the life of a fellow-mortal, but
likewise a coveted reputation for probity and professional acu-
men which no man among us may reasonably forfeit. . . .
of the two faces of nature, represented in the anatomy of the ºf
human organism, with its relations and susceptibilities, physi-
ology is the obverse and pathology the reverse.
The theoretical chemistry of disease has contributed but little
in aid of practical medicine. “Vital processes depend on chemical
processes, but are not chemical, and cannot, therefore, be ex-
plained by chemistry. There is something special in vital phe-
nomena, which necessarily transcends chemical investigation.
* * * * No analysis of a nerve will ever throw light
on sensibility.” These remarks apply to pathology, as well as
to physiology.
The aids to a correct diagnosis are not disregarded by sensible
and educated homoeopathists. -

XXVI—Encysted Tumors of the Face—The follow-
ing cures were reported by JNo. L. KELLogg, M.D., of Chicago.
CASE 1–Jane L., aged eighteen, had an encysted tumor upon
the right cheek, above and anterior to the angle of the inferior
maxillary bone. Its growth had been slow, and nearly painless;
color of the skin natural; shape inclined to oval; size that
of half a pigeon’s egg, if divided longitudinally; and it pre-
sented to the touch a sense of fluctuation, as if from the presence
of some semi-fluid substance.
Prescribed Calc.-carb., 21st, pellets No. 2.; dose: six of
them, half an hour before each meal, or thrice daily.
This young lady was attending a boarding-school, and sought a
prescription when at home, on account of the deformity occa-
sioned by the swelling. Directly after the prescription, she re-
turned to her school, and I lost sight of her until her next
vacation, when I found the tumor shrunken to the dimensions of
a small pea and feeling hard. I called it cured. . .
Something like two years subsequent to this, the pea-like
remnant began to expand again, when the patient called for
more of the same medicine. This she received, and from it
there resulted a permanent cure. . . . .
CASE 2–Byron S., aged fifteen, called with his father, desiring
me to excise a tumor which had been growing, nearly a year
upon the superior point of the right ear. It had now increased

to such a size as to be troublesome, from its weight and lopping
down the ear. It was nearly painless; skin of natural color,
and gave to the touch the sense of fluctuation, as of a semi-fluid
substance. My first impression was in favor of its removal by
the means proposed; but, on closer examination, finding the sac
extended over the top, embracing the out- and inside of the ear,
and that its removal would require an exposure or excision of a
portion of the cartilage, I decided to try the Calc-carb.
Prescribed Calc-carb., 21st., pellets No. 2.; dose: six, three
times a day, half an hour before eating. - -
At the end of a fortnight he returned, with the tumor palpably
diminished, and his pills all taken. The same prescription was
renewed.
He did not return for more medicine; but, meeting him on the
street three months subsequently, he informed me he was cured.
On examination, a slight thickening and hardness were all that
remained of the tumor. This person remained near me some
three years after the cure, and had no further difficulty with his
tumor. . . . . . - -
CASE 3.—Miss J.U., aged twenty, called to consult me respect-
ing a tumor which had been troubling her for some six or eight
months. This swelling was situated directly at the root of the
nose, making quite an unpleasant feature in an otherwise in-
teresting countenance. Like those above mentioned, this was
most troublesome on account of the deformity it occasioned.
Excision was supposed by the patient to be necessary. On
examination, I found a fluctuation similar to that mentioned in
Cases 1 and 2, but differing from them in the color of the skin,
and, not only of that covering the tumor, but adjacent to it.
There was evidently at that moment an unusual erysipelatous
inflammation, attended with some stinging pain. ...
Prescribed Bell, 3, while the redness and pain continued;
afterwards, Calc.-carb., 30, three times a day. - -
At the end of two weeks the patient called, with the tumor
much reduced; she received the same medicine once more, and
the necessity for excision had evidently passed away. The first
prescription in this case was made Nov. 1st, 1858; and, up to
this date, June 1st, 1859, she remains well.
I will add, the three patients had light hair and eyes, and
were of sanguine, verging to lymphatic temperaments.

XXVII-PUERPERAL FEveR.—A complicated case. Com-
municated to the Secretary by C. A. JAEGER, M.D., of Elgin,
Illinois.
Mrs. R., aged twenty-nine years, mother of four children, was
confined last spring. The birth was natural, although difficult,
and her medical attendant used her rather “roughly.” Four days
after confinement she took cold; the lochia ceased, fever set in,
the abdomen became distended, and puerperal fever was de-
veloped. The patient was very ill, so that the doctor and friends
thought her near her end, and she was treated for six weeks
most unmercifully—was blistered, &c., &c., to the heart's con-
tent of her medical advisers. After a fortnight's attention, at
the hands of these good but active men, there appeared two
sores upon her back. The doctors called them “bed-sores.”(?)
She suffered much from these—could neither rest or sleep;
was out of patience with the physician, and began to think she
would rather die under “little pills” than be longer tormented
in this manner. But the doctor told her that all she needed was
tonics and time; hence she continued a little while longer with
him, but did not improve very rapidly. r
April 8th the husband came for me. Being unable to go that
day, I sent her of Silicia, third trit., two powders, two grains each,
marked 1-3; and Bell., 30th, two powders marked 2.4; one powder
to be dissolved in twelve teaspoonsful of water, two spoonsful
to be given every four hours. The medicines to be taken as
numbered. This prescription I made upon the following state-
ment: Patient was very feeble, restless, had no sleep, much
pain in the whole lower part of the body, and hips, legs, feet,
back, &c., &c. The two “sores” had discharged considerable
pus; at times thick, and again thin, of a foetid odor. She
could not move without violent pain; lies generally upon her
right side and her stomach; has nocturnal perspirations, no
appetite, little fever, some chills, bowels quite regular, but some-
what inclined to constipation ; she nurses her babe, is very much
discouraged, and has no hopes of recovery. -
13th.-The husband reported his wife better. She rested and
had some sleep, sores still discharged freely and were not so
much inflamed (I had previously ordered slippery-elm poultices.
to be applied, and the ulcers to be cleansed with Castile soap-
suds); night-sweats less profuse. . . . . . .

second trit., with Sacc.-lact, for forty-eight hours.
19th.-I called to see her; examined the sores, and found two
of them quite large, located in the region of the lumbar verte-
brae; the largest one immediately upon the third of these bones,
the other a little lateral from the spinal column, and somewhat
downwards. These “sores” had the appearance of old abscesses,
and discharged freely; the openings were quite deep, all the
parts around them swollen and inflamed, extending as far as the
left hip, in fact that hip was very sensitive; otherwise they
had a healthy appearance. The patient related all these details,
and complained considerably of being unable to move. I then
requested her to move on her right side, which she did, but with
great pain and much exertion, taking her five minutes or more
to accomplish it, she crying and moaning all the while. She
had again, for the past few nights, been restless, and had little or
no sleep. There were no signs of the menses, but she had much
pain in the groin and uterine region.
Gave her Calc., carb., 30th, in pellets, every night for five
nights, with a few doses of Coffea, 3, now and then. -
Her miserable condition was one to be deeply sympathized
with, for she suffered much both mentally and physically. I
advised her to wean her babe, which she did.
24th.-Husband reports patient “better and doing well.”—
My journal says of her : Mrs. R. has been up and walked a
short distance without a cane, there is less discharge from Sores,
sleep not very good, some perspiration at night, lower extre-
mities much stronger, is more contented, &c., (I should have
stated that it had been her custom, with the help of her husband,
and for the purpose of being rested for a short time, to get up
and limp around the room until her bed was made). T -
26th.-Repeated the same medicine, with a few doses of China
to take in the morning, ' . -
May 1–Report came : still gaining, has been out of doors for
a short time, works a little, sleeps well, appetite very good,
gaining strength, discharge much less, small sore begins to heal,
inflammation and swelling subsiding.

12th.-She is now decidedly better. Her lameness is improved,
and she goes out again; thinks the last medicine has had a good
effect upon her. Sent her another dose of the Sulph, with the
Sacc.-lactis. - . . -
23d.—Has been out riding; rode at one time ten miles, to get
her babe; commenced nursing it again. Walks for quite a while
without her cane, works some in the kitchen, gains strength
rapidly, less discharge from sores, all the parts around look and
feel natural, her hips feel a little lame at times, although she
can turn and lie on either side now, and rejoices that she is so
well. Continue Sacc.-lactis. . .
June 7.—Visited me; feels “real smart;” menses appeared
this morning, they are rather scanty however. Gave her Puls.,
3, three doses for twenty-four hours. -
14th.-Was called to see Mrs. R. again. Found her again in
bed, where she had been for three days. The whole uterine region
was much distended, and she felt the most violent pain from pres-
sure upon it; vagina swollen, and parts very sensitive to the touch;
labia-majora highly inflamed; pain and tenderness in the groins
and hips—-in fact she was in pain all over the body. A very
severe pain was felt where she had the large ulcer; sores had
healed slowly; the whole spinal column was tender to the touch,
but the lower dorsal, and all the lumber vertebrae were very
painful, and it was with the greatest difficulty that she could
move from one side to the other. She had not slept for three
nights; had no appetite, no perceptible fever, tongue coated
white, pulse 80, and feeble. . -
Left her Coffea, 3., and Bell., 3, every half-hour for two hours,
then every hour for eighteen hours, or until she was more quiet;
these remedies to be followed by Ars., third trit., and Bell, 3,
every two hours, for twenty-four hours.
15th.-Ars, third trit., and Acom., 3, every two hours, in
alternation. Coffea if in much pain. She was a little more
comfortable, but there was no great alteration in the case.

17th–Is better; sleeps better, uterine region not so swollen
and tender, spine less tender, but very painful yet for her to
19th-Saw her, and to my surprise she moved without much
effort, and, as she said, with little pain, from one place to another
in bed; has been up to-day in her chair for the first time since
her relapse. All the painful and sensitive parts and regions
are better. Patient has improved beyond my expectations.
Acom., 3, and Sacc.-lactis every four hours. -
July 1–Patient is well, except a little lameness in her left
hip, which causes her to limp a trifle. -
P. S.—At the time when the uterine region, &c., were affected
I had a weak solution of Arnica, in warm water, applied to the
vagina, the spine, and the groins. She was under my treatment
nearly three months. . .
XXVIII.-CEREBRAL TYPHOID FEVER witH ANoMALous
Sequelas. Reported by P. L. Hatch, M.D., of Minneapolis,
Minn. Presented to the Society through DR. LUDLAM.
N. L., aged twenty-five, a man of sedentary habits, nervo-bilious
temperament, large angular head, black hair, blue eyes, and a
vigorous restless mind, was suddenly seized with a cerebral
typhoid fever, which persisted for twenty-one days. The case
being a critical one, a large council of allopathic physicians met
at the bed-side frequently, and not less than three of them
daily. Mercury was exhibited almost uninterruptedly, in some
form or quantity, during the whole course of the disease—as I
was subsequently informed by the principal attending physician—
but “without touching the gums.”
At the end of three weeks, the delirium, which had been
constant from the onset, gradually ceased, and an auspicious
convalescence set in, which continued for some five days, when
suddenly, and, without the least warning, or the slightest
discernible cause, the fever returned, and the following symptoms
were found to be present: Furious delirium; a hard, quick, and
small pulse; dry skin; the tongue parched, dark in the middle,
and red at the margins; the head hot; pupils dilated; general
subsultus; the mind haunted with fears of a violent death by
drowning or assassination; a constant desire to escape (requiring

the exertions of several strong men to restrain him), and utter
sleeplessness. Simultaneously, or nearly so, there appeared an
oedematous swelling of the left tarsus, accompanied by extreme
sensibility and redness. .
Again the assembled wisdom of the “dominant school” decided
upon the employment of Mercury, in divided doses, to be
followed, at intervals of from twenty-four to thirty-six hours
by a purgative. Four days had thus elapsed, without a moment's
sleep intervening, when the “alteratives” gave place to ano-
dynes, soporifics, and stimulants; but, after twenty-four hours
more, they too were abandoned for—homoeopathic remedies.
I undertook the case; the principal physician giving it his
unceasing attention, so far as seeing that my orders were
strictly carried out, and all the appliances of a judicious nursing
attended to, declaring, at the same time, that he regarded it as
a hopeless task. * e- . .
Prescribed Bell., 3, ten drops in three ounces of water; a tea-
spoonful every hour for six hours; then every hour and a half,
and subsequently every two hours, until the twenty-four hours
had elapsed. For the first time, a few moments of partial sleep
intervened, and this was followed by a slight modification of the
pulse. The head still remaining hot, and the swelling extending
from the foot towards the knee, I ordered ice to the former, and
cold water to the latter; and, in addition to this, frequent
sponging of the entire body with water at a moderate tem-
perature.
Continued the Bell.; at intervals of forty-eight hours, followed
a very slight, but certain decrease of the heat in the trunk and
extremities, excepting only on the diseased leg. There was still
much heat about the base of the brain, with sleep at long intervals
only, until gradually he became able, if absolute silence was
observed, to sleep for a full hour, but even this was attended
with a constant muttering or whispering. -
At this time, on the fourth day of my attendance, a cough
appeared. This was, at first, a dry hack, at intervals of an hour
or two; but gradually increased in degree and frequency. Physi-
cal examination revealed only a slight rhonchus in the bronchi
of the left anterior lobe. The leg was now swollen fearfully
from the foot to the knee; indeed, the foot was nearly as much

affected also. The use of the cold water had been kept up
constantly by trickling it slowly upon the part from a sponge,
and allowing the heated waste to run into a tub, placed at the
foot of the bed. At this juncture, I discovered three sphacelated
spots upon the diseased leg: one near the origin of tibialis-
anticus, or perhaps the middle of the superior third; another at
the inner margin of the belly of the soleus, and a third two or
three inches below. The longest was about the size of a quarter,
and soon reached the size of a silver dollar. There was not the
slightest indication of reaction in the living tissue surrounding
these spots. Then followed a decrease in the volume and
velocity of the pulse, an increase in the rhonchus and cough, and
momentary intervals in the delirium, a slight perspiration upon
the upper lip, pupils less dilated, and very soon the muttering
ceased altogether. . . . . ' , - -
Prescribed Bell., 3, alternately with Arsenicum, 6, every two
hours. In twenty-four hours I found the patient coughing
considerably, and expectorating a frothy, glairy, colorless
matter; the pulse was still lower; the sensorium apparently
clear, but too weak for the least possible exertion; the head
cooler, and the toes of the sound leg quite cold. The gangrenous
spots had not increased in size, the largest having a bold red
rim at its margin, and the others a bright redness around them
without the elevated margin. Hitherto the patient had taken
little or no food; although I ordered a little animal broth
every three hours, and dressed the leg in pulverized charcoal,
still continuing the application of water to the foot. Ars., 6,
was also given every two hours. -
In twenty-four hours more, I found almost every symptom of
the original disease (as it came into my hands) gone, except as
concerned the unfortunate leg. The cough was about the same
as on the previous day, with, perhaps, an increased expectoration;
but the leg had commenced to slough badly, and was discharging
at the gangrenous orifices, although, by this time the larger spot
had gradually disappeared, and only the two others remained.
Continued the Ars. - . . .
The next day noted an increased sloughing, and a hectic
fever, which lasted two hours, followed by a gentle perspiration,
and a more free expectoration. Appetite improving, however;
; ; : ordered increased amount of food, of a light and bulky nature.

In this condition, and without much apparent alteration, he
remained for the three following days, during which time a great
part of the remaining cellular tissue of the leg, between the
knee and the foot, came away in a mass. I employed injections
of tepid water into the cavity, thoroughly applied, and followed
at each time with a single injection of Glycerine. Continued
the Ars, every three hours, for two days; then every four hours.
At the end of this time, the cough had almost disappeared; the
paroxysms of fever were gone; the became head normally cool
(the ice having been abandoned previous to the discontinuance
of the Bell.); the sleep was refreshing and natural ; appetite
good enough ; digestion ditto; daily dejections from the bowels.
In short, my patient, weak to the utmost extremity, with a terribly
sore leg and foot, was slowly, very slowly convalescing, and I
soon dismissed the Ars, placing my reliance upon the recuper-
ative efforts and power of nature to complete the work of his
restoration.—HATCH. -
In a similar case of sloughing of the leg, the gangrenous spot
was clipped out early, three or four incisions were made, as far
as a probe could be passed under the edges—some of them two
or three inches long—so that the whole gangrenous and sloughy
portion was readily accessible; lint spread with a weak oint-
ment of Balsam of Peru was applied to the very depths of the dis-
eased part, all sloughy and gangrenous parts was removed several
times daily; the patient was put upon beef tea and weak brandy
and water, and the disease was stayed. It did not spread one
half-inch after the incisions and thorough dressings were made,
and the whole disease was confined to a space, two or three
inches square. A rapid recovery ensued.—PETERs. -
XXIX.-Hypericum-Perfoliatum in Spinal Lesions. For
notes of this interesting case the profession are indebted to DR.
WM. WALLETTE, of Wheaton, Du Page Co., Ill.
Willie, aged nine years, son of a prominent lawyer in Napierville,
in this county, while at play—some time during the month of
July, 1857—upon the roof of an out-house, met with the following
accident. While sliding down the roof, a projecting splinter of
one of the shingles pierced the muscles, about three inches below
the last spinous process of the lumbar vertebrae; was forced

upward to the distance of one and a half inches; divided itself,
the larger part passing to, and becoming fixed near the surface,
directly opposite the before-named process, while the smaller
portion lodged in the same vicinity. An attempt was made by
the mother to withdraw this splinter; but, being much decayed,
it broke off, say an inch from the orifice. .
By the advice of a physician, the wound was left to suppurate,
but became partially healed, however; in which condition it
remained for about four or five months after the accident, at
which time it commenced afresh to discharge pus, which was
thick and yellow in consistence and color, with dark-colored
particles, supposed to be the decomposed wood of the splinter,
interspersed through it. In three to five weeks this opening
healed entirely, and was, to all appearance, sound and healthy.
It appears, that the boy's general health since the accident
had been much more delicate than previously, up to about the
last of February, 1859, when he took a violent cold by getting
his feet wet, after which the following symptoms supervened:
General fever, with severe lancinating pains in the head and
back; super-sensitiveness to noise and light; very profuse and
painful diarrhoea, with tympanitis, and urine of a dark red
color. In the evening, before I was called (Feb. 28), and about
nine o’clock, he was taken with a spasm, accompanied by great
distortion of the muscles of the face, and frothing at the mouth.
In a few moments, however, he became more calm, and remained
so for about two hours, when he had another, but less frightful
spasm. This passed off, and he lay comparatively easy until
my visit was made. - .
I prescribed Bell, and Ars., with an occasional dose of Merc.,
should more profuse diarrhoea supervene. Aconite was also to
be given during the exacerbations of the fever. The improvement
was slow, but he got better. I did not see the patient again
until March 17, when I found him with the following symptoms:
He had been better of his diarrhoea, but this had become
suddenly worse and very exhausting; a bad cough, with rusty,
brick-dust colored sputa (for which latter he had received a few
doses of Bry, and Phos.); oadematous swelling of the feet and
ankles; great stiffness of all the joint, so much so that he had
to be removed to his bed and keptin a strictly horizontal position,

and perfectly straight. It was with difficulty that any of his
limbs could be moved. His flesh was very sensitive to the touch
over the entire chest and abdomen, and, in fact, over the entire
body. There was also considerable mental aberation at times
during the night. . .
I diagnosticated the nervous system to be the seat of his
disease, and inquired if he had been hurt by a fall, or otherwise.
This inquiry brought out the foregoing facts relative to his
injury, sustained some two years previously. Upon examination
of the cicatrix, now very much inflamed and swollen, my previous
opinion was strongly confirmed. It was supposed by the parents
that his having laid so long upon his back was the cause of the
Soreness there. - - -
March 25.—Sent for Dr. Ludlam, of Chicago, in counsel; for
the patient was running down, being excessively prostrate and
nervous, worrying and fretting until completely exhausted, when
he falls into a labored sleep, waking afterwards almost as much
excited as ever. Is a precocious child; will have some one read
to him, or relate him a story, and this is the only successful
method of calming him. Lumbar and sacral regions excessively
tender and sore, cannot bear us to look at, much less to handle
them. Diarrhoea less frequent, although of the same character.
Appetite for objectionable food only. Is considerably emaciated,
while his countenance and whole general appearance indicate
great nervous erethism.
At Dr. Ludlam's suggestion, ordered a more stimulating diet;
gentle frictions to the back and extremities with alcohol and
water, after which they were to be wiped dry, and then enveloped
in dry uncarded cotton. Perfect quiet was enjoined, and no
more books and stories allowed. Hyperieum peºf, third dec.
dilution, with Bell., 12, were given internally, at intervals of two
to three hours.
Subsequently he was kept upon the Hypericum, two doses per
diem, with Ars, and Merc., each one dose, or Bell., whenever the
mervous excitement became excessive. Other remedies appeared
to render no perceptible service. His recovery was very slow,
and nothing seemed to relieve the diarrhoea like the Merc. and
Ars.; although I certainly have good reason to believe that
Hypericum was the most useful remedy for the injured spine,

both from his early and prompt improvement after its first
prescription, and from the fact that, when he happened to be out
of that medicine, he did not improve as before.
To this date, August 9, 1859, he appears as well as ever
