AN Act For LIBERTY TO ERECT A Collegiate School.
W THEREAS several well disposed, and Publick spirited Per-
V sons of their sincere Regard to & Zeal for upholding & Prop-
agating of the Christian Protestant Religion by a succession of
Learned & Orthodox men have expressed by Petition their earnest
desires that full Liberty and Priveledge be granted unto certain Un-
dertakers for the ſounding, suitably endowing & ordering a Colle-
giate School within his Majtles Colony of Connecticot wherin
Youth may be instructed in the Arts & Sciences who thorough the
blessing of Almighty God may be fitted for Publick employment
both in Church & Civil State. To the intent therefore that all due
incouragement be Given to such Pious Resolutions and that so
necessary & Religious an undertakeing may be sett forward, sup-
ported & well managed :--
BE IT ENACTED by the Governi & Company of the sq Colony of
Connecticot, in General Court now Assembled, And it is enacted
& ordained by the Authority of the same that there be & hereby is
full Liberty, Right and Priveledge Granted unto the Reverend Mr.
James Noyes of Stonnington, Mr. Israel Chauncey of Stratford,
Mr. Thomas Buckingham of Saybrook, Mr. Abraham Pierson of

drew of Millford, Mr. Timothy Woodbridge of Hartford, Mr. James
Pierpont of New Haven, Mr. Noadiah Russel of Middletown, Mr.
Joseph Webb of Fairfield, being Revrd Ministers of the Gospel &
inhabitants within ye sº Colony, proposed to stand as Trustees,
Partners or Undertakers for the sq. School, to them and their suc-
cessors, To ERECT, form, direct, order, establish, improve and att
all times in all suitable wayes for the future to encourage the st
School in such convenient place or Places, & in such form & man-
ner & under such order & Rules as to them shall seem meet &
most conducive to the aforesd end thereof, so as such Rules or
Orders be not Repugnant to the Laws of the Civil Governmt, as
also to imploy the moneys or any other estate which shall be Grant-
ed by this Court or otherwise Contributed to that use according to
their discretion for the benefit of the sº Collegiate School from .
time to time & att all times henceforward.
And be it further ENACTED by the Authority aforesd that the be-
fore named Trustees, Partners or Undertakers together with such
others as they shall associate to themselves (not exceeding the
number of Eleven, or att any time being less than Seven, Provi-
ded also that Persons nominated or associated from time to time
to fill up sºl number be ministers of the gospel inhabiting within
this Colony & above the Age of forty years) or the major Part of
them, the sº Mr. James Noyes, Israel Chauncey, Thomas Bucking-
ham, Abraham Pierson, Samuel Mather, Samuel Andrew, Timo-
thy Woodbridge, James Pierpont, Noadiah Russel, & Joseph
Webb, undertakers, & of such Persons so chosen & associated as
abovesdatt any time hereafter, HAVE and shall have henceforward
the oversight, full & compleat Right, Liberty, power & Priveledge
to furnish, direct, manage, order, improve & encourage from time
to time & in all times hereafter the sa Collegiate School so Erected
& formed by them in such ways, orders & manner & by such Per-
sons, Rector or Master and officers appointed by them, as shall ac-
cording to their best discretion be most conducible to attaine the
aforesd mentioned end thereof. -
And Moreover it is ENACTED & ordered by the Governor, Coun-
cil & Representatives of ye Colony aforesd met in General Assem-
bly— - - -
That the si Mr. James Noyes, Israel Chauncey, Thomas Buck-
ingham, Abraham Pierson, Samuel Mather, Samuel Andrew, Tim-
othy Woodbridge, James Pierpont, Noadiah Russel & Joseph
Webb, Undertakers, Trustees or Partners, & ye sº Persons taken

from time to time into Partnership, or associated as aforesd with
themselves, shall HAve & receive & it is hereby GIVEN & GRANTED
unto them, the full & just sum of one hundred & twenty pounds
in Country Pay to be paid Annually & att all times hereafter until
this Court order otherwise, to them & to such Person or Per-
sons only as they shall appoint & impower to Receiv the same, to
be faithfully disposed of by ye sº Trustees, Partners or Underta-
kers for the end aforesd according to their discretion, which sº
sum shall be raised & Paid in such ways & manners & att such a
value as ye Country Rates of sº Colony are & have been usually
raised & Paid. -
It is also further Enacted by the Authority aforesd that the sº
Undertakers & Partners & their successors be & hereby are fur-
ther impowered to have, accept, acquire, purchase or otherwise
lawfully enter upon Any Lands, Tenements & Hereditam” to the
use of the sº School, not exceeding the value of five hundred
Pounds prAnn, & any Goods, Chattels, Sum or Sums of money
whatsoever as have heretofore already been Granted, bestowed,
bequeathed or given, or as from time to time shall be freely given,
bequeathed, devised or settled by any Person or Persons whatso-
ever upon & to & for the use of ye sº School towards the found-
ing, erecting or endowing the same, & to sue for, Recover &
receiv all such Gifts, Legacies, bequests, annuities, Rents, issues
& profits arising therefrom & to imploy the same accordingly, &
out of ye estate, Revenues, Rents, profits, incoms accrueing &
belonging to sº School to support & pay as the sº Undertakers
shall agree & see cause, the sd Rector or Master, Tutors, Ushers
or other officers their Respective annual Salaries or . Allowances
As also for the encouragemt of the Students to grant degrees or
Licences as they or those deputed by them shall see cause to order
& appoint.

AN ACT IN ExPLANATION OF AND ADDITION TO THE ACT FOR .
ERECTING A COLLEGIATE SCHOOL IN THIS Colony.
WHEREAs Pursuant to the Powers and Priviledges granted to
Certain Trustees for Erecting a Collegiate School in this Colony
Entituled an Act for a Collegiate School, the Said Trustees have
Erected the Said School in the Town of New-Haven which School
is now known by the Name of Yale Colledge; And Whereas it
appears to this Assembly that an Explanation and Enlargement
of the powers and priviledges granted by Said Act is Necessary
for the Carrying on the Affairs of the Said Colledge, for want of
which it has Laboured under great difficulties very much to the
prevention of that Order and good Education which is to be de-
sired there : -
Bee it therefore Enacted by the Governour, Council and Repre-
sentatives in Generall Court assembled and by the Authority of
the Same that the Said Act which provides that the Number of the
Said Trustees be not under Seven nor above Eleven is not to be
Understood or Taken so as to be restrictive of the power of the
Said Trustees Never to Choose any person to be a Trustee, when
there is of Such persons as have been Chosen and Acted as Trus-
tees Eleven persons Living in the Colony or Elsewhere, but that
in Case any person so Chosen be by Providence Incapacitated
from attending that Service or shall himself decline the Same thro'
the Necessity of his own Affairs or for any other such Reason as
he shall Judge requisite, the Trustees in any of their Meetings
Lawfully Called may be Understood to have and it is hereby
Enacted and declared that they shall be Taken to have full power

by the Majority of Such Meeting to proceed to the Choice of
Another Trustee in the Room of any such person. And it is
hereby further declared and Enacted to be the True Intent and
Meaning of the Act aforesd that the said Trustees shall be Impow-
ered and they are hereby declared to have power to Meet Together
for Considering, Advising about and Resolving upon all Matters
belonging to the Trust of the Said Colledge committed unto them
as aforesa and to Agree and Conclude, Order and determine Con-
cerning them by the Majority of the Said Meeting, and by the same
Majority to Choose and Appoint a Clerk who shall, in a fair book
prepared for that End, Register and Carefully preserve the Acts of
all such Meetings.
And WHEREAs it has been doubted what Number of the Said
Trustees may be Lookt upon as a Sufficient or full Meeting, Inas-
much as there is not in the aforest Act any Express mention made
of any Meeting of the said Trustees; It is therefore to prevent all
Scruple of that kind for the future hereby provided and declared
...that due Notice being given to the Trustees by Consent of any
three of them of a Meeting of the Trustees desired at any Time or
place, any Seven or more of the Trustees present at such Time
and place shall be Esteemed a full Meeting. And it is hereby
declared and Enacted that in all such Meetings, so Called, or
Otherwise as the said Trustees in any such Meeting shall agree,
all affairs under the Care of the said Trustees shall be determined
by the Majority of such Meeting. - -
And WHEREAs it has been found Inconvenient that in the Elec-
tion of Persons to be Trustees, the Trustees Election by the
aforesd Act should be Limitted and restrained so as that the Per-
son who shall be Chosen must Necessarily be fourty Years of
age ; It is hereby declared and Enacted that for the future the said
Trustees in any Election of a person into that Trust shall not be
Esteemed or held Obliged by said Act to Choose such persons as
shall be above fourty Years of Age, but may Choose such per-
sons otherwise Qualifyed According to said Act, Provided he is
thirty Years of Age. And it is further hereby Allowed, Enacted,
Granted and Provided that whosoever shall be Chosen and made
a Rector of the said Colledge shall by Vertue thereof become a
Trustee of the same and be so Esteemed and Taken during his
Continuance in the said Rectorship. -
THE PRESENT CHARTER,
BY THE GOVERNOR AND COMPANY of his MAJ-
ESTY's Colony of Connecticut in New-ENGLAND in
AMERICA.
An ACT for the more full and complete Establishment of
YALE COLLEGE in New Haven and for enlarging
the powers and Privileges thereof.
HEREAS upon the Petition of several well disposed and
public-spirited Persons expressing their desire that full
Liberty and Privilege might be granted unto certain Undertakers
for the founding, suitably endowing and ordering a Collegiate
School, within this Colony, wherein Youth might be instructed in
the Arts and Sciences, the Governor and Company of the said
Colony in General Court assembled at AVew Haven, on the Ninth
Day of October, in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven
Hundred and One, Granted unto the Rev'd Messrs. Žames Moyes,
Israel Chauncey, Thomas Buckingham, Abraham Pierson, ‘Samuel
Mather, Samuel Andrew, Timothy Woodbridge, Şames Pierpont,
AVoadiah Russel, and Joseph Webb, who were proposed to stand as
Trustees, Partners or Undertakers for the Society, and to their
Successors, full Liberty, Right and Privilege to erect, form, direct, ,
order, establish, improve, and at all Times in all suitable Ways to
encourage the said School in some convenient Place in this
Colony, and granted sundry Powers and Privileges for the attain-
ning the End aforesaid ; , .
And Whereas the said Trustees, Partners or Undertakers in
pursuance of the aforesaid Grant, Liberty and License, ſounded a
Collegiate School at Wew Haven, known by the Name of YALE

COLLEGE, which has received the favorable Benefactions of many
liberal and piously disposed Persons, and under the Blessing of
Almighty God has trained up many worthy Persons for the Service
of God in the State as well as in the Church;
And Whereas the General Court of this Colony assembled at
- A'ew Haven, the Tenth Day of October, in the Year of our Lord
One Thousand Seven Hundred and Twenty Three, did explain
and enlarge the aforesaid Powers and Privileges granted to the
aforesaid Partners, Trustees or Undertakers and their Successors,
for the Purpose aforesaid ; as by the respective Acts, reference
thereto being had, more fully and at large may appear;
4 na. Whereas the Rev'd Messrs. Thomas Clap, Samuel Whitman,
Şared Eliot, Ebenezer Williams, Jonatham Marsh, Samuel Cooke,
Samuel Whittelsey, Joseph Moyes, Anthony Stoddard, Benjamin Lord,
and Z)anied Wadsworth, the present Trustees, Partners and Under-
takers of the said School, and Successors of those beforementioned,
have petitioned, that the said School, with all the Rights, Powers,
Privileges and Interests thereof, may be confirmed, and that such
other additional Powers and Privileges may be granted as shall
be necessary for the Ordering and Managing the said School in the
most advantageous and beneficial Manner for the promoting all
good Literature in the present and succeeding Generations:
Therefore,
THE GoverNOR and COMPANY of his Majesty's said English
Colony of Connecticut in General Court assembled, this Ninth Day
of May, in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Seven Hundred
and Forty Five, enact, ordain, and declare, and by these Presents
it is enacted, ordained and declared— ſ. *
I. That the said Thomas Clap, Samuel Whitman, Şared Eliot,
A benezer Williams, Jonathan Marsh, Samuel Cooke, Samuel Whit-
telsey, Yoseph Moyes, Anthony Stoddard, Benjamin Lord, and Daniel
Wadsworth, shall be an Incorporate Society or Body Corporate and
Politic, and shall hereafter be called and known by the name of
THE PRESIDENT AND FELLows of YALE College IN NEw HAVEN,
and that by the same Name they and their Successors shall and
may have perpetual Succession, and shall and "may be Persons in
the Law capable to plead and be impleaded, defend and be de-
fended, and answer and be answered unto ; and also to have, take,

possess, acquire, purchase or otherwise receive Lands, Tenements,
Hereditaments, Goods, Chattels, or other Estates, and the same
Lands, Tenements, Hereditaments, Goods, Chattels or, other
Estates to grant, demise, lease, use, manage or improve for the
Good and Benefit of the said College, according to the Tenor of
the Donation, and their Discretion. -
2. That all Gifts, Grants, Bequests, and Donations of Lands,
Tenements or Hereditaments, of Goods and Chattels heretofore
made to or for the Use, Benefit and Advantage of the Collegiate
School aforesaid, whether the same be expressed to be made to the
President or Rector, and to the rest of the Incorporate Society of
Yale College, or to the Trustees or Undertakers of the Collegiate
School in New Haven, or to the Trustees by any other Name, Style
or Title whatsoever, whereby it may be clearly known and under-
stood that the true Intent and Design of such Gifts, Grants,
Bequests and Donations, was to or for the Use, Benefit and Advan-
tage of the Collegiate School aforesaid, and to be under the Care
and Disposal of the Governors thereof, shall be confirmed, and
the same hereby are confirmed, and shall be and remain to, and be
vested in the President and Fellows of the College aforesaid, and
their Successors, as to the true and lawful Successors of the orig-
inal Grantees. - - -
3. That the said PRESIDENT AND FELLOws and their Successors
shall and may hereafter have a common Seal, to serve and use for
all Causes, Matters and Affairs of them and their Successors, and
the same Seal to alter, break and make new as they shall think fit.
4. That the said THoMAS CLAP shall be, and he is hereby
established the present PRESIDENT, and the said Samuel Whitman,
jared Eliot, Æðenezer Williams, jonathan Marsh, Samuel Cooke,
Samuel Whittelsey, Žoseph Moyes, Anthony Stoddard, Benjamin Zord,
and Daniel Wadsworth shall be, and they are hereby established
the present FELLows of the said College, and that they and their
Successors shall continue in their respective Places during Life,
or until they or either of them shall resign, or be removed, or dis-
placed, as in this Act is hereafter expressed. - :
5. That there shall be a General Meeting of the President and
Fellows of said College, in the College Library on the second Wed-
nesday of September annually, or at any other Time and Place
which they shall sée Cause to appoint, to consult, advise and act
in and about the Affairs and Business of the said College; and
that on any special Emergency, the President and two of the Fel-

lows, or any four of the Fellows, may appoint a Meeting at the
said College, provided they give Notice thereof to the Rest by
Letters sent and left with them, or at the Places of their respective
Abode, five Days before such Meeting ; and that the President and
six Fellows, or in Case of the Death, Absence, or Incapacity of
the President, seven Fellows, convened as aforesaid (in which
Case the eldest Fellow shall preside), shall be deemed a Meeting
of the President and Fellows of said College, and that in all the
said Meetings, the Major Vote of the Members present shall be
deemed the Act of the Whole, and where an Equivote happens,
the President shall have a casting Vote,
6. That the President and Fellows of the said College and
their Successors, in any of their Meetings assembled as aforesaid,
shall and may from Time to Time, as Occasion shall require, elect
and appoint a President or Fellow in the Room and Place of any
President or Fellow who shall die, resign, or be removed from his
Office, Place or Trust (whom the said Governor and Company
hereby declare, for any Misdemeanor, Unfaithfulness, Default or
Incapacity, shall be removable by the President and Fellows of
the said College; Six of them, at least, concurring in such Act);
and shall have Power to appoint a Scribe or Register, a Treasurer,
. Tutors, Professors, Steward and all such other Officers and Ser-
- vants, usually appointed in Colleges or Universities, as they
shall find necessary and think fit to appoint for the promoting
good Literature, and the well ordering and managing the Affairs
of said College; and them or any of them, at their Discretion, to
remove; and to prescribe and administer such Forms of Oaths
(not being contrary to the Laws of England or of this Colony) as
they shall think proper, to be administered to all the Officers and
Instructors of the said College, or to such and so many of them
as they shall think proper, for the faithful Execution of their
respective Places, Offices and Trusts. .
7. That the present President and Fellows of said College and
their Successors, and all such Tutors, Professors and other Offi-
cers, as shall be appointed for the public Instruction and Govern-
ment of said College, before they undertake the Execution of their
respective Offices and Trusts, or within three Months after, shall
publicly in the College-Hall take the Oaths and subscribe the
Declaration appointed by an Act of Parliament made in the first
Year of KING GEORGE Ist., Entitled, an Act for the further Security
of his Majesty's Person and Government, and the Succession of the

Crown in the Heirs of the late Princess Sophia, being Protestants, and
for extinguishing the Aſſopes of the Pretended Prince of Wales, and his
open and secret Abettors ; that is to say, the President before the
Governor, Deputy-Governor, or any two of the Assistants of this
Colony, for the Time being; and the Fellows, Tutors and other
Officers before the President, for the Time being, who is hereby
impowered to administer the same ; an entry of all which shall be
made in the Records of said College.
8. That the President and Fellows shall have the Government,
Care and Management of the said College and all the Matters and
Affairs thereunto belonging, and shall have Power from Time to
Time, as Occasion shall require, to make, ordain and establish all
such wholesome and reasonable Laws, Rules and Ordinances, not
repugnant to the Laws of England, nor the Laws of this Colony,
as they shall think fit and proper for the Instruction and Education
of the Students, and Ordering, Governing, Ruling and Managing
the said College, and all Matters, Affairs, and Things thereunto
belonging, and the same to Repeal and alter as they shall think
fit; which shall be laid before this Assembly as often as required,
and may also be repealed or disallowed by this Assembly when
they shall think proper. -
9. That the President of said College, with the Consent of the
FelIows, shall. have Power to give and confer all such Honors,
Degrees or Licenses as are usually given in Colleges or Univer-
sities, upon such as they shall think worthy thereof.
Io. That all the Lands and Ratable Estate belonging to the
said College, not exceeding the yearly Value of Five Hundred
Pounds Sterling, lying in this Government, and the Persons, Fam-
ilies and Estates of the President and Professors, lying and being
in the Town of AWezu Aſazen, and the Persons of the Tutors, Stu-
dents and such and so many of the Servants of said College as
give their constant Attendance on the Business of it, shall
be freed and exempted from all Rates, Taxes, Military-Service,
Working at Highways, and other such like Duties and Services.
11. And for the special Encouragement and Support of said
College, this Assembly do hereby Grant unto the said President
and Fellows and their Successors, for the Use of the said College,
in Lieu of all former Grants, One Hundred Pounds Silver Money,
at the Rate of Six Shillings and Eight Pence per Ounce, to be
paid in Bills of public Credit or other Currency equivalent to the
said Hundred Pounds (the Rate or Vaiue thereof to be stated

from Time to Time by this Assembly) in two equal Payments, in
October and May annually, this payment to continue during the
Pleasure of this Assembly.
IN FULL TESTIMONY AND CoNFIRMATION of this Grant and all
the Articles and Matters therein contained, the said Governor and
Company do hereby order that this Act shall be signed by the
Governor and Secretary and sealed with the Public Seal of the
Colony, and that the same or a Duplicate or Exemplification
thereof shall be a sufficient Warrant to the said President and
Fellows to hold, use and exercise all the Powers and Privileges
therein mentioned and contained. -

ADDITIONAL ACT-PASSED MAY, I792.
Be it enacted by the Governor and Council and House of Represen-
tatives, in General Court assembled. - -
Sect. 1. That Mr. William Hart, Mr. John Trumbull, and Mr.
Andrew Kingsbury be, and they are hereby appointed commis-
sioners with full power and authority, to receive the balances now
due, and payable, on all the taxes heretofore laid, for the payment
and discharge of the principal and interest of the public debt of
this State, and all other balances due, and receivable, at the
i. treasury, on any public paper of this State, in trust, and for the
purposes in this act hereafter mentioned. - • • *. -
Sect. 2. Said balances, which shall come into the hands of said
commissioners, be, and the same are hereby appropriated to, and
for the use and benefit of Yale College in New Haven, to be
applied in manner following, viz.:-the sum of two thousand five

hundred pounds lawful money, out of the avails thereof, for the
purpose of erecting a new building or college for the reception
and accommodation of the students; and the residue shall be, and
hereby is established, as a fund for raising an annual revenue,
forever hereafter, to be applied to, and for the support of necessary
professors in the various arts and sciences, for the benefit of said

Sect. 3. In case this grant shall be accepted, in manner as
hereinafter provided, the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and six
senior assistants in the Council of this State, for the time being,
shall ever hereafter, by virtue of their said offices, be trustees or
fellows of said college ; and shall together with the present Presi-
dent and Fellows of said College, and their successors, constitute
one corporation, by the name and style mentioned in the charter of
said College ; and shall have and enjoy the same powers, privileges,
and authority, in as full and ample a manner, as though they had
been expressly named and included in said charter; And that in
case of vacancy, by the death, or resignation, or in any other way,
of any of the present Fellows of said College, and their Successors,
every such vacancy shall forever hereafter be supplied by them,
and their successors, by election, in the same manner as though
this act had never passed : And that the said Governor, Lieutenant
Governor, and senior assistants, or any four of them, together with
the present Fellows of said College, and their successors, or
any six of them, shall at all future meetings of said corporation be
a quorum for the transaction of business.
Sect. 4. This act shall not have any force or effect, so far as
the same respects the appropriating said balances to the use of
said College, or in any respect adding to, or varying the charter
and constitution thereof, unless the same shall be accepted, and
approved, by the present corporation of said College, in legal
meeting assembled. . . . . . . .
The above act was approved and accepted by the Corporation,
26 June, I792. :
In May, 1796, the President and Fellows of Yale College were
required, by an act of the General Court to “annually render to
the General Assembly, during their session in October, an account
of the receipts and expenditures of the monies belonging to said
College,”

ExTRAct FROM THE CONSTITUTION OF THE STATE of
CoNNECTICUT, ADOPTED I5 SEPT., 1818.
ARTICLE VIII.
Sect. 1. The charter of Yale College, as modified by agreement
with the Corporation thereof, in pursuance of an Act of the Gen-
eral Assembly, passed in May, 1792, is hereby confirmed.

In May, 1819, at the request of the Corporation, by an act of the
General Assembly, the “six senior assistants in the Council" of
the State were replaced, in the Corporation of Yale College, by
the “six senior senators,”—this change being necessitated by the
adoption of the new Constitution.

ADDITIONAL ACT--PASSED MAY, 1834.
Jºe it enacted, etc., That the funds which have been, or may here-
after be, granted, provided by the State of Connecticut, or given
by any person or persons, to the corporation of the President and
Fellows of Yale College in New Haven, and by them invested and
held for the use of that institution, shall, with the interest thereof,
be and remain exempt from taxation.
Provided, however, that the said corporation shall never hold
in this State, real estate free from taxation affording an annual
income of more than six théusand dollars; and provided, also,
that the private property of the officers of the institution shall not
be exempt from taxation.
ADDITIONAL ACT-PASSED 1838,
Be it enacted, etc., That whenever there shall be present at any
future meetings of the corporation of Yale College, a majority of
the fellows thereoſ, such majority shall constitute a quorum for the
transaction of business, provided there be present a majority of
those who are by election successors of the original trustees thereof,
and provided due notice of such meeting shall have been given to

AN Act of THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF CON-
NECTICUT, RELATING TO YALE COLLEGE, passed, July, 1871 ;
amended, June, 1872. -
Be it enacted, etc. Sect. I. All graduates of the first degree, of
five or more years' standing, in any of the departments of Yale
College, and all persons who have been admitted to any degree
higher than the first in Yale College, whether honorary or in
course, may, on the day next preceding the public commence-
ment day of said College, in the year of our Lord eighteen hun-
dred and seventy-two, cast their votes, under such regulations as
the President and Fellows may prescribe, for six persons to be
chosen from among such graduates; and the six persons who
shall be found to be elected by a plurality of the votes cast, shall
be Fellows of Yale College in the stead of the six senior senators
of the State, and shall have all the rights, duties, and privileges
as Fellows which are now by law conferred upon said senators.
In case of an equality of votes between two or more candidates,
the person who shall hold the said office of Fellow shall be desig-
nated by lot from among the persons receiving such equality of
VOtéS. -
Sect. 2. The Fellows thus elected shall enroll themselves by
lot in six classes, one holding office for six years, another for five
years, another for four years, another for three years, another for
two years, and another for one year, eligible for re-election ; and
every year as a vacancy occurs, all graduates of the first degree,
of five or more years' standing, in any of the departments of Yale
College, and all persons who have been admitted to any degree
higher than the first in Yale College, whether honorary or in
course, may, upon the day next preceding commencement day, in
the manner heretofore prescribed, elect by a plurality of votes a
person to fill the vacancy, and hold the office of Fellow for a
period of six years, eligible for re-election ; and so whenever a
vacancy shall occur from death, resignation, or any other cause,
such graduates may elect a person at the next commencement to
fill the office of Feilow for the remainder of the term in which a
vacancy has occurred. The official year of such Fellows shall
end with the day next preceding each commencement day. *
Sect. 3. This act shall not take effect until the President and
Fellows of Yale College, by a vote communicated to the Governor
of the State, shall have signified their acceptance of and consent
to the provisions of this act. - :

sect 4. The acceptance of this act by said corporation shall
not operate to make the charter of said corporation as heretofore
amended, subject to repeal, alteration, or amendment, without the
consent of said corporation. -

AN ACT IN RELATION TO THE MEDICAL INSTITUTION OF YALE
CoLLEGE, passed by the General Assembly of Connecticut, May
Session, 1834; approved 5 June, 1834; amended May, 1856, and
May, 1866.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
Assembly convened :
Sect. I. The Medical Institution established in Yale College,
pursuant to an agreement between the President and Fellows of
Yale College, and the President and Fellows of the Medical Society
of Connecticut, shall be known and acknowledged by the name of
“The Medical Institution of Yale College.”
Sect. 2. There shall be established in the Institution not less
than four professorships ; and the price of the tickets for the course
of Lectures on each branch, shall not exceed fifteen dollars,
There shall be a joint committee of an equal number of persons,
appointed by the President and Fellows of Yale College, and the
President and Fellows of the Connecticut Medical Society, who
shall make a nomination ; from which nomination the Professors
shall be chosen by the President and Fellows of the College.
Sect. 3. Every Medical Student shall be required to attend to
the study of physic and surgery for two years, with some medical or
surgical professor or practitioner who is in respectable standing ;
provided, he shall have been graduated at some College. Other-
wise, to study three years; to have acquired in addition to a good
English education, a competent knowledge of the Latin language,
and of the principles of Natural Philosophy; to have arrived at the
age of twenty-one years ; to be of good moral character; and to
deliver to the committee of examination a satisfactory dissertation
upon some subject in medicine or surgery or the auxiliary branches.
And every medical student shall attend one course of the lectures
under the professors of the Medical Institution of Yale College,
or of some other public Medical Institution, previously to his
being admitted to an examination for a license; and the course or
courses of lectures which he shall attend may be included within
the time he is required to study. .

- Provided, nevertheless, that upon the recommendation of the
members of the Medical Society in each county, one meritorious and
necessitous person from such county shall annually be allowed
the privilege of attending one course of lectures gratis; and if any
one of the counties should fail to recommend as above the Presi-
dent and Fellows of said society may fill up the vacancy. It shall
be the duty of the clerks of the several county meetings to report
to the President and Fellows the names of the persons whom they
shall agree to recommend; and the Secretary of the society shall
transmit the said names, together with such as the President and
Fellows may add, agreeably to the above provision, to the Medical
Professors of Yale College. But no person shall be recommended
as aforesaid to a gratuitous course of lectures, unless such person
shall have previously attended one course of lectures in the Med-
ical Institution of Yale College. -
Sect. 4. Each candidate for the degree of Doctor in Medicine
shall be required to attend two full courses of lectures, one of
which, at least, shall be at the Medical Institution of Yale College,
the other, if attended elsewhere, being at an institution where a
similar course of instruction is pursued ; which degree, upon the
recommendation of at least two-thirds of the committee of exam.
ination shall be conferred by the President of the College, and the
diploma signed by him and countersigned by the examining com-
mittee or a majority of them ; and the ſee for graduation shall be
twenty-five dollars. The President of the College may also confer
the honorary degree of Doctor in Medicine upon those persons
whom the President and Fellows of the Medical Society shall rec-
ommend for that purpose. -
Sect. 5. The committee of examination for the practice of
-physic and surgery, shall consist of the Professors of the Medical
; Institution of the College, and an equal number of the members
of the Medical Society appointed by the President and Fellows of
& the same ; and the President of the Medical Society shall be, ex
officio, President of the examining committee; and in case of the
absence of the President, a President pro tempore shall be appointed,
by the members of the examining committee chosen by the Med-
ical Society, with the same powers; which committee, or a majority
of them, shall possess the power, and they only, of examining for a
license. And all licenses to practice physic or surgery shall be
signed by the President of the Medical Society, and countersigned
by the secretary of the committee of examination ; which secretary

they are hereby authorized to appoint; and the fee for each license
shall be fifteen dollars.
Sect. 6. There shall be two examinations in the year, one of
which shall be held immediately at the close of the lectures, and
the other during Commencement week in the Academical Depart-
ment of Yale College ; when a candidate is prevented by sickness
from attending at that time, he may afterwards be examined by
the Medical Professors; and such examination, together with their
certificate thereof, shall entitle him to the same privileges as
though his examination had been by said committee.
Sect. 7. All Medical Students, who shall have attended two
courses of the lectures in the Medical Institution, shall have the
privilege of attending future courses gratis.
“AN ACT appropriating to the Sheffield Scientific School of Yale
College, the proceeds of lands assigned to the State by Act of
Congress approved July 2, 1862.” (Passed by the General As-
sembly of Connecticut, May Session, 1863, and approved June
24, 1863.)
Ae it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives, in General
Assembly convened.
Sect. I. Whenever the Secretary of the Interior shall have
issued to this State, the land scrip due tg this State, under the act
of Congress, entitled “An Act donating Public Lands to the seve-
rai States and Territories which may provide Colleges for the
benefit of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts,” it shall become the
duty of the Commissioner of the School Fund to take charge of
said scrip, and as agent of this State, to sell the same so soon as
in his judgment he can prudently do so, upon terms to be pre-,
viously approved by the Governor, and in the name and behalf of
this State, to convey and transfer the same in any suitable manner
to the purchaser or purchasers thereof, and to invest the avails
thereof in the manner specially prescribed by said act of Congress.
Sect. 2. Said Commissioner shall semi-annually pay over the
interest of the Fund which may result from the sale of said scrip,
to the President and Fellows of Yale College in New Haven, for
the special purposes and upon the special conditions hereinafter
set forth. - - -
Sect. 3. Said Corporation shall devote said interest wholly and
exclusively to the maintenance, in that department of Yale Col-
lege known as the “Sheffield Scientific School,” of such courses
of instruction as (including the courses of instruction already in-
stituted in said school) shall carry out the intent of said act of
Congress in the manner specially prescribed by the fourth section
of said Act. - -
Sect. 4. Said Corporation shall furnish gratuitous education
in said courses of instruction to pupils who shall be annually
nominated to be pupils of said school, in such manner as the
General Assembly shall prescribe. The number of pupils to be

... so received gratuitously into said school shall be, in each year,
such a number as would expend a sum equal to one-half of the
said interest for the same year in paying for their instruction in
said school if they were required to pay for it at the regular rates
charged to other pupils of said school for the same year. Said
pupils so nominated and received shall be citizens of this State,
and shall be admitted into said school upon the same terms and
subject to the same rules and discipline which shall apply to all
other pupils of said school, with the single exception that they
shall not be required to pay anything for their instruction. :
Sect. 5. Said Corporation shall annually make and distribute
the reports required by the fourth paragraph of section fifth of said
act of Congress. - - -
Sect. 6. No portion of said interest shall be paid over to said
Corporation until said Corporation shall contract with this State,
by its contract in writing, in such form as the Governor shall ap-
prove, to fulfil and perform all the duties and obligations imposed
upon it by this Act. -
Sect. 7. The Governor, the Lieutenant Governor, the three
senior Senators, and the Secretary of the State Board of Educa-
* tion, shall constitute a Board of Visitors, whose duty it shall be
to visit said school in each year, and report annually thereon to
the General Assembly.
“AN ACT relating to the Sheffield Scientific School." (Passed
by the General Assembly, May Session, 1864, and approved
July 6, 1864.) -
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives in General
Assembly convened.
Sect. I. The visitors of the Sheffield Scientific School designa-
ted by the Act approved June 24, 1863, and entitled “An act ap-
propriating the Scrip for public lands granted to this State under
the Act of Congress approved July 2, 1862,” to wit, the Governor,
the Lieutenant Governor, the three senior Senators, and the Sec-
retary of the State Board of Education, shall constitute, together
with the Secretary of the Sheffield Scientific School, an appointing
board, who shall select from such candidates as shall offer them-
selves, those who shall be entitled to receive the gratuitous instruc-
tion in said school, which has been provided for by the State in
said act. -
:
Sect. 2. In case there are more applications for the bounty of
the State than there are vacancies to be filled on the part of the
State, said board shall give the preference to such young men as
are fitting themselves for agricultural and mechanical or manufac-
turing occupations in life, who are or shall become orphans
through the death of a parent in the naval or military service of
the United States; next to them to such as are most in need of
pecuniary assistance; and furthermore, they shall provide that the
appointments shall be distributed, as far as practicable, among
the several counties of the State, in proportion to their population.
Sect. 3. The Secretary of said school shall also be the Secretary
of said appointing board, and shall keep a record of their trans-
actions ; and he shall furthermore, at least one month before the
close of each academic year in said school, cause to be published
in at least one newspaper in every county of this state in which a
newspaper may then be published, an advertisement specifying
the number of pupils who by virtue of said act are entitled to be
admitted into said school for gratuitous instruction during the en-
suing academic year, and designating the time and manner in
which applications may be made to said appointing board for ad-
mission to said school. -

Of the Government of the College.
IV. The President, at his discretion shall have authority to
appoint a meeting of the Faculty. All matters, which by law are
referred to the Faculty, shall be brought before such meetings, and
determined by the major part of the members present, whereof
the President shall always be one, and concurring in such deter-
mination; and it shall be the duty of the Professors and Tutors,
when requested by the President, to give their opinion and advice.
V. Annually at the Commencement, there shall be appointed a
Committee (whica shall consist of not less than three members of
the Corporation, whereof the President shall always be one, and
the other two or more shall be elected by ballot), called the Pru-
dential Committee; which shall be authorized and required to
appoint a Tutor, or Inspector of the College, whenever either of
those offices becomes vacant at any other time than at a meeting of
the Corporation—to order such repairs of the College buildings
and appurtenances, as they shall judge necessary—to audit the
accounts of the Treasurer—to make an annual statement and
report of the expenditures of the College, and state of the
treasury and of the revenues and funds of the College—to examine
and adjust all accounts, which any person or persons have with the
College, and shall lay before them : and where balances shall be

found due to any such person, to give orders on the Treasurer
for the payment of them—to institute, or cause to be instituted, in
the name of the Corporation, suits for the recovery and preservation
of the College property and interest, whenever it shall be neces-
sary—together with the Treasurer, to cause the funds of the Col-
lege to be invested in the most advantageous mode—and to do and
manage all other matters and things, whereunto they are or shall
be further authorized or required, by law, or by any special resolve
of the Corporation.
VI. The President shall be authorized to appoint the meetings
of the Committee ; and a major part of the Committee shall have
power to act; and when any other members of the Corporation shall
be present at meetings of the Committee, they shall have the same
power of acting as the members of the Committee, in appointing a
Tutor or Inspector of the College, and in all matters in which
their advice and assistance shall be desired by the Committee.
VII. In case of the death of the President, it shall be the duty of
the Prudential Committee to meet immediately at the College, and
to make such regulatious, and give such orders and directions, as
they shall judge necessary; which the Professors, Tutors, and
Students shall observe, until there shall be a meeting of the Cor-
poration ; which meeting the Committee shall call, as soon as may
be convenient. -
VIII. When any person shall have been elected to, and have ac-
cepted the office of a Tutor, he shall continue in office for a term
not less than two years, unless he shall be permitted by the Cor-
poration, or by the Prudential Committee, to resign sooner. But
the office of a Tutor shall cease and determine after a term of ser-
vice of three years, unless he shall then be requested by the Pres-
ident and Professors to remain longer. When any Tutor shall

resign the office, or enter upon it, at any other time than the Com-
mencement, his part of the salary, for the year ending at the next
Commencement, shall be apportioned to the time of his instruc-
tion, exclusive of vacations, *
No Tutor shall lodge out of college, except by consent of the
President and Professors.
IX. In case of the absence, sickness, or death, of the President,
the senior Professor present shall have all the powers of the Pres-
ident in the government of the College.

CHAPTER IV.
Of the Course of Academic Ziterature and Anstruction.
VII. It shall be the duty of the Faculty, under the direction of
the Corporation, thoroughly and faithfully to instruct the students
in the various branches of learning appointed by the proper author-
ity, to select the authors to be read and recited by the several
classes, and to appoint the particular order and time of all the
literary exercises and examinations. And it shall be the duty of
the President annually to lay before the Corporation a report
of the state and method of instruction, the authors recited, and
the progress of literary improvements in the College.
CHAPTER X.
Of College Dues and 7erm Bills.
VIII. The Treasurer shall collect the bills of the Students, and
account therefor to the Prudential Committee, as often as required,
and shall pay four times a year the officers of the College the
sums due to them, charging said sums to the Corporation, with all
other sums paid by their order, or by order of the Prudential Com-
mittee, and likewise pay three times a year to the sweepers of the
College such a sum as by agreement shall have become their due.
LAws RELATING TO THE MANAGEMENT OF
THE YALE SCHOOL OF THE FINE ARTS.
[Enacted by the Corporation in 1865.]

A Council of five persons, of whom the President of the College
; shall be ex officio one, and the chairman, shall take the management
of the School of Art. Each member of the council shall continue
in office four years, subject to reappointment. The council, or the
major part of them, shall have power to place works of art within
the building ; to appoint teachers of drawing and other arts of
design ; to allow lectures to be delivered in the building, with the
concurrence of the Faculty of the School, on the subject of the fine
arts : to purchase pictures, engravings, etc., with any funds that
may be given for that purpose ; and to appoint a janitor or custo-
dian. But the council are not authorized to incur any expenses
for the Corporation without consent previously obtained.
The council shall keep a record of their doings, and present the
same to the Corporation whenever so required. -
ENDOW MENTS OF INSTRUCTION.
LYMAN BEECHER LECTURESHIP ON PREACHING, IN THE THEO-
LOGICAL DEPARTMENT.
This lectureship was founded in 1871 by a gift of $10,000, from
Mr. Henry W. Sage, of Brooklyn, N. Y. It is to be filled from
time to time by the appointment by the President and Fellows of
a minister of the gospel, of any evangelical denomination, who
has been markedly successful in the special work of the Christian
ministry. -
BENNER FUND.
This fund, of $300, was received in 1862 from Robert Benner
(Y. C. 1842), of N. Y. City, as a fund towards the formation of an
agricultural museum.
BotANY PROFESSORSHIP FUND.
This fund, of $25,500, contributed by Judge Samuel L. Selden
and others, is held on condition that the College shall make an
effort to complete the endowment of the professorship, when cir-
cumstances are favorable for so doing; also, that if during the
lifetime of Professor Daniel C.Eaton (the present incumbent), the
endowment shall amount to $35,000, then the sum of $5,000., the
gift of Judge Selden, shall be made the private property of Pro-
fessor Eaton ; also, that, if the Corporation see fit, they may
assign other kindred branches of learning to the department of
this professorship. -
On Professor Eaton's appointment, it was also voted by the
Corporation that he need perform no duties in the Sheffield

Scientific School unless he elects to do so, but he may be required
to give lectures or instruction in the Academical Department
without special compensation, if at any time the Corporation
shall desire it.
BRONSON FUND.
Henry Bronson, M.D., of New Haven, has given $5,000, the
income, or principal, or both, to be expended for the support of a
professorship of Comparative Anatomy, or Zoology, or both, in
this College.
CHITRENDEN PROFESSORSHIP of DIVINITY, IN THE ACADEMICAL *
DEPARTMENT,
The funds of this Professorship (originally named the Livingston
Professorship, in 1746, when the sum of twenty-eight pounds and
ten shillings, given by Hon. Philip Livingston, of Livingston
Manor, N. Y., was appropriated to this purpose) include a lot of
land, given in 1755 by President Clap upon condition that the
Professor “shall always believe, profess, and teach for truth all the
doctrines contained in the Assembly's Catechism and the Confes-
sion of Faith received and established in the churches of Connec-
ticut, and none contrary thereunto, and shall preach in the College
Hall or Chapel on the Lord's Day and other days as often at least
as other ministers generally do in their respective pulpits, except
in vacations, times of sickness, and other necessary avocations. .
Provided there should be no Professor of Divinity preaching and
teaching in the College Hall or Chapel, according to the rules and
articles before-mentioned, during the space of seven years, or if
the Professor of Divinity should preach or teach any doctrines
} contrary or repugnant to any of the doctrines contained in said
:*
catechism or confession of faith, then in either case this grant shall
cease, determinate, and be void.” - -
By the donations of Mr. Simeon B. Chittenden of New York
City, the fund has been raised to fifty thousand dollars: of his gift
“the surplus income, above the amount required to pay the incum-
bent of the Professorship, shall be disposed of in the discretion of
the Corporation.” - -

Dw IGHT PROFESSORSHIP of SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY, IN THE
THEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT.
The funds contributed for this professorship at its foundation, in
1822, were given on the following conditions :—
1. The fund of this Professorship shall be kept distinct from all
other property belonging to the College, and shall never be
blended there with by loan or in any other manner, and no part of
the income or revenue shall ever be appropriated to any other
object than the support of Professors, who shall instruct students
in Theology. -
2. Every Professor who shall receive the income of this fund
shall be an ordained minister of the gospel, and shall sustain the
character of a prudent, learned, and devout Christian, laborious in
the discharge of the duties of his office. --
3. Every Professor who shall receive the income or revenue of
this fund shall be examined as to his faith, and be required to make
a written declaration thereof, agreeably to the following: “I hereby
declare my free assent to the confession of faith and rules of
ecclesiastical discipline agreed upon by the churches of the state
in the year 1708.” -
4. If at any future period any person who fills the chair of this
Professorship holds or teaches doctrines contrary to those above
referred to, then it shall be the duty of the Corporation to dismiss
such person from office forth with, and iſ they do not dismiss him,
the donors reseawe to themselves and their heirs the right to de-
mand the several sums which they may have paid.
For BEs ‘Fund.
In 1854 Mr. Jehiel Forbes of New Haven gave $1000., the in-
come of which is for the present paid as an annuity. After the
death of the annuitants, the principal of this fund is to be added
to the fund of the Professorship of Applied Chemistry.

HOLMES PROFESSORSHIP OF THE HEBREW LANGUAGE AND LIT-

The income of this professorship, so far as endowed by Mr.

and civil polity, and on such other subjects of jurisprudence as
the Faculty or Corporation shall from time to time direct or

“Whenever from time to time a new Professor shall be appointed,

have a full and free communication with the Professor elect, on
his views of doctrinal theology and of the duties of the Pastoral
charge, such as is customary in our churches in the ordination and
installation of ministers of the Gospel, and if they are satisfied of

for the office, shall proceed to induct him into the same.”

WILLIAM LEFFINGwBLL PROFESSORSHIP OF PAINTING AND DESIGN.
The incumbent shall be a practical artist of the old approved
school, and shall be ex officio Dean or Director of the Yale School
of the Fine Arts, and under, the President of the College shall
preside over the Faculty of said school.
The office of Director shall terminate, so soon as the Professor-
ship of Sculpture and Architecture have been established and filled.

PROFESSORSHIP OF SANSKRIT AND CoMPARATIVE PHILOLogy.
This Professorship, established and endowed by Mr. Edward
E. Salisbury (Y. C. 1832), of New Haven, shall be a foundation in
the Department of Philosophy and the Arts, designed for the ben.
efit of advanced students, and of students pursuing special
branches of knowledge not professional; it being understood that
the incumbent may, if requested, give instruction, also, in the
undergraduate Departments of the College, in the branches of
learning which he represents. The incumbent shall not be re-
required to instruct in any department of the College, otherwise
than in the field covered by his professorship.
The income of the fund ($50,000), or so much of it as may be
needed, shall be appropriated in the event of a vacancy in the
chair, to the support of any elected successor thereto, even if not,
at the time of his election, fully fitted for the discharge of his
duties, for a length of time not to exceed three years, while he is
devoting himself to special preparation for said duties, with the -
approbation of the President and Fellows; the balance of income
not so appropriated shall be yearly added to the principal, until
the successor to the chair shall be actively engaged in discharging
its duties. *
STREET PROFESSORSHIP of MoDERN LANGUAGES, IN THE
ACADEMICAL DEPARTMENT.
By the directions of the founder, Mr. Augustus R. Street (Y. C.
1812), of New Haven, this chair may be filled by a native of France ;
or by “some competent person, other than a native of France,
provided that before entering upon the duties of his appointment
he shall have resided at least three consecutive years, for at least
thirty-six weeks in each year, in the city of Paris, for the purpose.
of acquiring a thorough acquaintance with the French language
and literature.” In case the Corporation should at any time be
disposed to establish a Professorship of French only, the Funds
given by Mr. Street (amounting to $31,690.47) are to be set apart
to the sole and exclusive use of such Professorship.

THACHER, FUND, IN THE ACADEMICAL DEPARTMENT,
In 1877 Mr. and Mrs. Frederic W. Stevens presented a house
and lot on Hillhouse Avenue, on the following conditions:
The property is to be sold whenever the sale shall best promote
the objects of the trust, and the proceeds of the sale are to consti-
tute the Thacher Fund.
In the meantime the property is to be rented, and of the pro-
ceeds, the sum of $1 Ooo. is to be used annually for increasing by
$500, the salaries received by two Tutors, who have served as
Tutors for three years in the Academical Department, and who are
nominated to this further service by the President and Academical
Professors, and are appointed on this nomination by the Corpora-
tion. These appointments shall be for three years, and renewable
at the discretion of the nominating and appointing bodies. They
may be revoked at any time by the Corporation for any cause
which may seem to them sufficient.
The balance of the rents is to accumulate until the sale of the
property, and then to be added to the Thacher Fund. One
thousand dollars of the income of this Fund is then to be used as
above described, and the remaining income to be added to the
principal, until the Fund amounts to $60,000.
After this amount is reached, the income of $25,000, is to be
used, in equal parts, to increase the salaries of three Tutors
selected in the same manner as the two Tutors named above, and
$2Ooo. of the remaining part of the income is to be applied annu-
ally to aid in the establishment and maintenance of a new and
additional Professorship of the Latin language and literature, the
incumbent of which Professorship shall take the place of one of
the more temporary instructors in that department, and shall
receive (in addition to said $2000.) the sum usually paid to a Tutor
during his third year of service.
If for the want of suitable candidates or for any other reason,
any portion of the income of the Fund remain unexpended, it
shall be added to the principal, and the income of the increase
used in the discretion of the Corporation to further any or all of
the objects of this trust. - . - º
The expense of the care of this Fund shall not be made a charge
on either the principal or income thereof. -

THE THEOLOGICAL DEPARTMENT,
If any surplus of the income of this fund (bequeathed by the
late Mr. Augustus R. Street, of New Haven), is at any time remain-
ing, not needed for the above use, such surplus may be appropri-
ated and used by the Corporation for the increase of the Library
of the College. The fund amounts to $47,865.

The other endowed professorships have no special conditions
attached, except that the income of the funds belonging to each
shall be applied to the support of the respective incumbents,
FUNDS FOR THE PROMOTION OF SCHOLARSHIP.
BERKELEY SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
The proceeds of this fund, that is to say, the clear yearly rents
and profits of a farm near Newport, R.I., given by Dean Berkeley
in 1733, shall be paid to three students towards their maintenance
during the time between their first and second degree in Arts;
such students being called Scholars of the House, and during that
space of time, being obliged to reside, at least three-quarters of
each year, in the college. Said students shall be elected on the
sixth day of May (but if it shall be on a Sunday, then the election
I shall be on the day following), such election being performed by
the President or head of the College, jointly with the “senior
Episcopal missionary" of the state of Connecticut, “that is to say,
he who hath been longest upon the mission ” in said state, the
candidates being publicly examined by the electors, two hours in
the morning in Greek, and in the afternoon two hours in Latin ;
those who appear to be the best scholars on said examination,
shall be elected, and in case of a division of sentiment in the
electors, the election shall be determined by lot. If the senior
Episcopal clergyman shall not attend, then any other Episcopal
clergyman of Connecticut shall be entitled to elect, in course of
seniority; and if none of the Episcopal clergy shall attend, then
the election shall be performed by the President. -
Whatever surplus of money shall arise during the vacancies of
the said scholarships, the same shall be laid out for Greek and
Latin books, to be disposed of by the said electors on the said
day of election to such of the undergraduate students as shall
show themselves most deserving by their compositions in the
Latin tongue on a moral subject or theme proposed by the
electors.

BRISTED SCHOLARSHIP.
The examination for this scholarship, which was founded in
1848 by Mr. Charles Astor Bristed (Y. C. 1839), of New York City,
shall begin not more than three weeks after the commencement of
the third collegiate term. Any member of the Junior or Sopho-
more classes of the Academical Department may be a candidate.
The examinations shall consist chiefly of printed papers to be
answered in writing ; the viva zoce part shall not be more than
one-eighth, and the classical papers shall count twice as much
as the mathematical. The classical papers shall include ex-
tracts from Homer, Cicero, Virgil, Horace, Catullus, and Lucre-
tius, with critical questions on the passages set, and translation
from English prose into Latin prose ; and may include extracts
from other classical authors, questions in Ancient History, and
translation from English prose into Greek prose, at the option of
the examiners, but no original composition in Latin or Greek.
The mathematical papers shall always include three propositions
of Euclid taken from the first four books and the sixth book.
The scholarship shall be tenable till the regular time of taking
the degree of M.A. (i. e. for three years), one-third of the annual
payment to be forfeited by non-residence in New Haven. The
scholar shall not be deprived of his scholarship for any offense
short of one involving expulsion, but if rusticated or suspended
shall forfeit the proceeds during the time of his rustication or sus-
pension. All forfeits shall be added to the principal sum, which
now amounts to $1827.81.
In case of equality the examiners may divide the scholarship, or
hold a new examination between the equal candidates.
The examiners shall be the President; the Professors of Greek,
Latin, or Mathematics; and one Master of Arts of Yale College
or Columbia College, N. Y., to be appointed by the Faculty of
Yale College. 'º -
The examiners shall have power to fill all accidental vacancies,
and the Corporation of Yale College agree— -
I. To discharge the expenses of the printing and stationery
necessary to the examination, 2. To distinguish the scholar in
their annual catalogue by some appropriate mark.

CLARK SCHOLARSHIP.
Between the first of June and the first of September in each
year, a special examination for this scholarship shall be held by
the Faculty, for which any member of the Senior Class in the
Academical Department may offer himself as a candidate. The
examination shall be strict and impartial, extending to all the
branches of literature and science included in the regular course
of instruction. On the ground of this examination, the candidates,
or so many of them as it shall be thought expedient to designate,
shall be arranged in the order of merit. If two or more shall be
deemed equally meritorious, their rank shall be decided by lot.
The Faculty are authorized by the Corporation (June, 1877) to
substitute the annual examinations for the special examinations
above described.
The first scholar in each class thus determined shall be entitled
to receive the annual income of two thousand dollars (given for
this purpose by Mr. Sheldon Clark, of Oxford, Conn.), provided
he reside in New Haven nine months in each of the two years
immediately succeeding the time of taking his bachelor's degree,
and devote himself to a course of study prescribed by the President
and Academical Professors and adapted to his particular genius
and prospects of usefulness, but not including the studies of either
of the three professions. He shall not be entitled to receive the
annual appropriations until he produce to the Treasurer a certifi-
cate from the President and Professors, or some one of them au-
thorized to act in their behalf, that he has faithfully complied with
these conditions.
If the scholar who is ranked first does not reside in New Haven
and prosecute his studies in conformity with the conditions pre-
scribed, one of the other scholars in the same class in the order of
merit may succeed to the place and receive the appropriations.
The Corporation may make such changes in these regulations
as they shall judge best calculated to promote the main purpose
for which the donation was made. -
The Faculty are authorized by the Corporation to dispose of
any income from this fund, remaining after appropriations made
to scholars on this foundation, in premiums to undergraduates for
the encouragement of English composition and other learning.

DEFOREST PRIZE.
By the direction of the donor, David C. DeForest, of New
Haven, the Corporation are to procure to be made annually, a
gold medal of the value of one hundred dollars, to be denomi-
nated the “DeForest Prize,” with such inscription thereon as the
President shall direct; to be given to that scholar of the Senior
Class, who shall write and pronounce an English oration in the
best manner, on some day, either in the month of May or June, in
each year; the President and Professors being judges, and every
member of the Senior Class in the Academical Department being
permitted to compete.
Douglas FELLOWSHIP.
This Fund, to consist of $10,000., was founded in 1872 by Mrs.
Samuel Miller, of New Haven, in memory of her brothers, Suther-
land Douglas (Y. C. 1822) and George H. Douglas (Y. C. 1828).
The conditions are, that the fund shall be securely invested, and
the annual income, at least to the amount of $600., appropriated
to such person as shall be annually elected to such fellowship
from the recent graduates of the Academical Department. The
electors shall be, the President of the College, and the two sons
of the donor, Rev. A. Douglas Miller, and George D. Miller ; and
after the death of either of the two last named electors, the Pro-
fessors of the Academical Department shall be added to the
number of electors. A majority of all the electors shall be pres-
ent at each election, and assenting to the selection; and while the
college of electors consists of only three members, the President
shall concur in each election in order to render it valid.
No person shall continue in the foundation for more than three
years. -
In the elections regard shall be had to the following indispensa-
ble requisites: in addition to a good moral character, the person
selected should be a man of positive and earnest moral convic-
tions; also, he should have eminence in some branch of literature
or science, and give promise of success in imparting knowledge.
He shall reside at the College at least thirty-six weeks in each
year, engaged in the prosecution of such studies, not professional,
as may be satisfactory to the electors. Occasional services may

be required of him in the instruction and discipline of the college,
but not to such extent as to interfere with the highest success in
acquiring knowledge.
Special regulations not inconsistent with the foregoing general
conditions may be made from time to time by the President and
Fellows,
Foot'E SCHOLARSHIP.
By the last will of Harry W. Foote (Y. C. 1866), of New Haven,
who died June 28, 1873, the sum of $25,000., payable in ten years
without interest, was given to the College, as a foundation forever
of one or more scholarships in the College, to be called “Th
Foote Scholarships.” -
The incumbents shall be selected by the Corporation each year
from those graduates of the Academical Department who may
wish after graduation to devote one or more years to a course of
study in the graduate Department of Philosophy and the Arts,
and shall receive annually, for such time as said Corporation shall
direct, from the income of said fund such portion thereof as said
Corporation shall direct, upon complying with such rules and
regulations and conditions in regard to course of study, time of
study, proficiency, and examinations, as said Corporation may
impose.
FRESHMAN (OR WOOLSEY) SCHOLARSHIPS.
1. These Scholarships, founded by President Woolsey, are
open to all members of the Freshman Class in the Academical
Department who shall be, in the judgment of the instructors of
the class, of good moral character.
2. Early in the third term of Freshman year, candidates for this
Scholarship shall be examined in the Greek previously studied
during the year, in Algebraic problems selected at the time of the
examination and not before known to the students examined, and
in Latin composition. The person who shall pass the best exam-
ination in these studies on the whole (Latin composition being
always one in which he excels) shall be admitted as a scholar
upon the foundation, and shall receive all the income therefrom
for four years, the first payment being due to him by or before
the end of Freshman year, and the last payment by the end of
Senior year. - - -

3. Provided, however, that in the judgment of the Faculty he
retains a good standing in character and scholarship ; and that he
makes himself acquainted in Junior year with the Differential and
Integral Calculus, and upon failure so to do he shall have no right
to receive the payment for the Senior year; and for loss of char-
acter or scholarship he may at any time lose the right to be upon
this foundation. y
4. All cases of difficulty as to the interpretation of this instru-
ment of gift shall be determined by the Faculty, unless the founder
explains his own intention.
5. If the scholar ceases for any cause to be on this foundation,
the person next to him on the examination shall take his place.
6. The President and Fellows may make any changes in said
scholarships that they think best, or even appropriate the income
to other objects at their discretion, the consent of the founder
being first obtained during his lifetime.
There are also the HURLBUT Scholarship and the THIRD FRESH-
MAN Scholarship given for the second and third rank, respectively,
at this examination, and tenable for one year only, to which no
special conditions are attached. - -

LARNED SCHOLARSHIPS.
The scholars shall be selected by the Academical Faculty, one
from each graduating class, and each may hold his scholarship for
three years, so that in regular course one scholarship becomes
vacant every year. They shall be residents of New Haven during
all the term of their scholarship, and pursue diligently such a
course of advanced study as they may select and the Academical
Faculty approve. -
The Faculty may establish reasonable rules for their control,
and may assign to and require of them such duties and assistance
in the tuition and government of the college as they (the Faculty)
shall deem useful and expedient. - -
If any vacancy shall occur in a scholarship during the pendency
of its term, by death, resignation, or dismissal, the remainder of
the term shall be filled by the appointment of a graduate of the
same class. - -
These Scholarship Funds, of $5000, each, were bequeathed in
1877 by Mrs. Irene Larned.

MACY GRADUATE SCHOLARSHIP.
The fund derived by the College from the bequest of Rev. Wil-
liam A. Macy (Y. C. 1844), of Shanghai, China, who died in 1859,
was set apart in 1864 to accumulate for a graduate-scholarship
fund, to be established on the following terms.
“The Academical Faculty, at their discretion, the President con-
curring, may appoint a graduate of the College of recent standing
and distinguished scholarship, to hold the Macy Fellowship, or
Scholarship, for the term of five years.
“Said scholar, if appointed to a tutorship or professorship in
Yale College, shall, on accepting such office, vacate his scholarship.
“Said scholar shall pursue a course of study marked out for
him by the Faculty, in accordance with his genius and taste, and
sufficiently comprehensive to employ him through the period of
holding his scholarship. He shall not engage in teaching or in
the study of one of the learned professions, except during the last
i year of his office, that is, after four years' tenure of the same. He
may, however, pursue such studies connected with one of the
learned professions, such as Hebrew, or Roman Law, or Botany,
or Chemistry, as the Faculty shall judge not to be properly pro-
fessional studies.
“Said scholar shall be called on and required, under the direc-
tion of the President and Faculty, to assist in public examinations
for admission into College, or College examinations; but shall
not be required to read examination-papers, -
“Such scholar shall attend religious worship every Sunday in
the Chapel, at the stated times of public worship; or, if of some
other denomination, at a church of that denomination ; and shall
observe all the rules of morality and propriety. He may be
deposed from his office for misconduct, or failure to pursue his
studies according to this statute. He may resign his office at the
end of any year or term, with the consent of the Faculty. He
may be reappointed at the end of five years.”
The fund now amounts to about seventy-five hundred dollars.
MoDERN LANGUAGES SCHOLARSHIP. • T
The income of this fund of $2000., bequeathed in 1867 by
William Wheeler DeForest of New York City, shall be applied,
without subdivision, towards the support of a scholar, graduate
or undergraduate, yearly selected by the Academical Faculty, with

the concurrence of the President, preference being given to such
scholars as shall pursue the study of the modern languages,
especially French, Spanish, Portuguese, or Italian. The Faculty
have discretionary power, with the concurrence of the President,
at any time they may think needful to apply the income in aid of
the salary of the Professor of such languages.
John A. Porter PRIZE.
In 1872 an offer was received from the “Kingsley Trust Asso-
ciation,” placing at the disposal of the Corporation annually the
sum of $250., to constitute a Prize, to be called the “John A.
Porter Prize,” and to be awarded for an English Essay, on the
following conditions:—
“rst. The prize may be competed for by any member of any
department of the University, pursuing a regular course for a
degree, and who shall have been a member for at least one aca-
demic year prior to the time when the prize shall be awarded.
“2d. The prize shall be awarded by three judges, two to be
appointed by the President of the College and one by the Trustees
of the Kingsley Trust Association –such judges to be chosen or
appointed on or before the first day of the second academic term.
The award of the prize shall be announced on Commencement Day.
“3d. Subjects shall be chosen, and the length and character of
the essays may be specified, by the Trustees of the Association.
The subjects shall be publicly announced within the first two
weeks of the first academic term.
“4th. If in any year in the opinion of the judges none of the
competing essays be of sufficient excellence, the prize shall not
be awarded. -
“5th. Competing essays shall be transmitted to the judges
within one week after the opening of the third academic term,
under cover, signed by a fictitious name and accompanied by the
real name of the writer in a sealed enclosure. - -
“6th. The Trustees reserve the right to retain all competing
manuscripts and the right of publication of the same: each essay
must therefore be accompanied by an assignment of the right of
copyright.
“7th. These terms and conditions may at any time be altered
by the Trustees of the Association, with the consent of the Presi-
dent and Fellows of the College.” .

SALTER FUND.
In the year 1781, the Rev. Richard Salter, D.D., of Mansfield,
Conn., gave by deed a farm to the College “for the particular use
and purpose of cultivating, encouraging, and promoting the study
of the Hebrew language and other Oriental languages in said
College, by supporting a professor or instructor or otherwise.”
The amount of the fund is $3700. *
Scott PRIzes FoR Excel.LENCE IN THE MODERN LANGUAGES.
By the bequest of Henry W. Scott (Y. C. 1863) who died in 1871,
the Corporation received $1000., the interest of which is to be
applied for the establishment of two prizes of thirty dollars each,
which shall be given annually in the Academical Department, in
such class or classes as the President of the College may desig-
inate, for excellence in the Modern Languages. These prizes
shall be called “The Scott prizes for excellence in the Modern
Languages,” and shall always consist of books of the value of
thirty dollars respectively, on the inside of the cover of which
shall be placed the following engraved label, viz.: “Scott Prize
for excellence in the Modern Languages, awarded to — for
excellence in the language. Yale College, .”
which shall be properly filled up with the name of the successful
competitor, and the words “French " or “German " (as the case
may be), the date, and signed by the President of the College.
i All monies arising from this fund (should there be any) above
the sixty dollars allotted for the annual prizes shall be added to
the principal, and should this principal ever reach the sum of
$1500, then such additional prizes for excellence in any depart-
ment of learning in the College may be offered as the President
and Faculty of the College shall see fit. The competition for the
prizes shall take place under such regulations as the President
and Faculty may ordain. If it should ever appear desirable for
any reason that Prizes for excellence in the Modern Languages
should not be offered, it is directed that from the proceeds of this
fund other prizes in any department of learning may be established
and offered at the discretion of the President and Faculty of the
College, the only conditions annexed being that the prizes shall
always bear the name of the founder, shall always consist of books,
and shall always be suitably inscribed as indicated above.

SENIOR MATHEMATICAL PRIZES.
The proper College authorities shall annually prepare a number
of problems in both abstract and concrete mathematics, and pro-
pose them to the Senior Class of the Academical Department for
solution. All solutions returned within such time as may be
allowed for their preparation shall be examined by judges ap-
pointed by the Faculty, and that scholar whom they shall find to
have produced on the whole the best solutions shall receive the
first prize, and in like manner the second prize shall be awarded
for the second-best solutions. If it shall happen that there shall
not be two sets of solutions which shall be deemed worthy of
prizes, it shall be lawful to award both prizes to one person, if he
has produced solutions of unusual merit; or, in case of solutions
of insufficient merit, to decline to award either or both of the
prizes; but in the latter case, the value of such omitted prizes
shall be added to prizes offered to the next class,
Every member of the Senior Class may be a candidate for these
prizes, and in the distribution of them the previous scholarship
or character of a candidate shall not operate either for or against
him. To guard against deception, the candidates may be per-
sonally examined with regard to their knowledge of the problems
solved, at the discretion of the Faculty.
The first prize, which shall not be divided, shall consist of a
medal containing gold to the value of ten dollars, and ten dollars
additional in money. The medal shall bear the inscriptions,
“Senior Mathematical Prize,” “Yale College,” also the name of
the recipient, the year of his graduation, and such device as may be
agreed upon by the Faculty. The die shall be made and the medal
struck at the expense of the College. The second prize shall
consist of ten dollars in money. -
The problems may be proposed to the Junior Class, during the
third term, but the prizes shall be awarded during Senior year.
The fund for these prizes was given by John DeForest (Y. C.
1826), M.D., of Watertown, Conn., in 1855. *
SILLIMAN FELLowsHIP.
The fund, which it is intended shall amount to $10000. ($3000.
being now paid in), shall be securely invested, and the income
shall be appropriated to the maintenance of a student, who shall
be a graduate of the Academical Department, who has given evi-

dence of proficiency and promise in some department of physical
science, namely, Chemistry, Mineralogy, Geology, or Physics.
He shall be elected by the Faculty of the Academical Department.
The election shall take place annually, and the actual incumbent
may be reëlected ; but no person shall hold the Fellowship more
than three years.
It is the object of the Fellowship to further the progress of the
incumbent in studies tending to fit him for scientific investigation,
or to be a teacher of science,—excluding the ordinary professional
studies. He shall pursue studies in some branch or branches of
the physical sciences, under the direction of the professors of such
branch or branches, and shall be responsible to the Faculty, who
may declare the Fellowship vacant in case of gross neglect or for
other reasons in their judgment sufficient, and may immediately
fill the vacancy by the election of another person in the manner
prescribed. |
The holder of the Fellowship may be called on by the Faculty
to render services in the instruction or government of the College,
but no service shall be required of him which would in the judg-
ment of the Faculty prevent or hinder the successful prosecution
of his studies. He must reside in New Haven at least thirty-six
weeks in each year; but the Faculty may excuse him from this
condition, in case it shall appear that he can pursue his studies
more advantageously elsewhere.

- SOLDIERS' MEMORIAL FELLOWSHIP.
This Fellowship was founded in 1875, by Mrs. Thecdosia D
Wheeler, of New Haven, with the gift of $1 oooo, and receives its
name, “ in honor of the men of Yale who fell in battle as Union
Soldiers in the Secession War, and in affectionate remembrance
of William Wheeler of the Class of 1855, killed June 22, 1864, in
action at Culp's Farm, Ga.” -
The annual income shall be paid to such person as shall be
elected by the President and the Professors in the Academical
Department, a majority of the electors being present at and as-
senting to the election; and the person" so elected shall be at the
time of his entrance on said Fellowship, a graduate of the Acad-
emical Department of not more than three years' standing; and
the same person may continue on this foundation for five years,
provided he gives satisfaction to the electors. -

In addition to a good moral character, the person elected shall
excel in some branch of literature or science—preference being
given to excellence in Greek-and shall give promise of success
in imparting knowledge.
He shall reside in New Haven for at least thirty-six weeks in
each year, engaged in the prosecution of such studies, not profes-
sional, as may be satisfactory to the electors. Occasional services
may be required of him in the instruction and discipline of the
College, but not to such an extent as to interfere sensibly with
the regular prosecution of his studies.
Special regulations, not inconsistent with these general condi-
tions, may be made from time to time by the President and
Fellows.
Tow NSEND PREMIUMS.
Isaac H. Townsend (Y. C. 1822), of New Haven, gave one
thousand dollars in 1843, for the objects and purposes following:
“First, that the Corporation shall make loans of said money, in
such sums and on such terms as it shall deem expedient, each loan
to be evidenced by a note or bond in favor of said Corporation.
And every note or bond to be secured by a mortgage of unencum-
bered real estate, in the State of Connecticut, of double the value
of the note or bond.
“Second, the said Corporation shall annually pay out the interests
and profits of the loans abovesaid in five premiums of $12 each
to the authors in the Senior Class of the best original compositions
in the English language. The subjects for said compositions shall
be proposed from time to time, soon after the beginning of each
academical year. And all the members of the Class (Senior) in
said College for the time being shall have liberty to write for the
premiums. The subjects shall be selected by the Faculty of the
College, unless, in any year, the Faculty shall consider it expedient
to refer to each student the selection of his own subject. The
premiums shall be awarded by the Faculty, or by a Committee
designated by the Faculty for that purpose. No determination
shall be made among the compositions to which no premiums shall
be awarded. All compositions receiving premiums shall be read
in public at a meeting of the members of the College, and as far
as practicable by their respective authors, and shall then be pre-
served among the papers of the College. .

WINTHROP PRIZES.
In 1871, Mr. Buchanan Winthrop (Y. C. 1862), of New York
City, gave $5000, on the following conditions, viz:—that the sum
be kept invested in good and valuable securities, and out of the
yearly income thereof the sum of $200, be annually awarded to
that member of the Junior Class in the Academical Department,
who shall, at an annual examination, to be held in the third term
of the collegiate year, exhibit the most thorough acquaintance
with the Greek and Latin poets, six months' previous notice
being given of the authors required, which shall be chiefly selected
from those not used in the College course, and particular atten-
tion being paid to elegance of scholarship and appreciation of the
spirit of the poetry; also, that the surplus of said income, not to
exceed $10o., be awarded to the scholar who shall stand second
at such examination; and if any surplus shall still remain, that it
be paid to the scholar receiving the first award.
FUNDS FOR THE BENEFIT OF STUDENTS NOT
SELECTED FOR SCHOLARSHIP.

ATWATER SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this scholarship of one thousand dollars, founded
by Mr. Charles Atwater, of New Haven, in 1855, shall be annually
paid to such meritorious student as the Academical Faculty shall
select.
BENEvoleNT SOCIETY FUND,
The avails of this fund (of eight hundred dollars) shall annually
be appropriated, at the discretion of the Corporation, to assist
indigent young men of irreproachable morals and promising tal-
ents in acquiring a liberal education. .
CHARNLEY SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this Scholarship, of five hundred dollars, founded
in 1855 by William S. Charnley, Esq., of New Haven, shall be
annually paid to such one of the founder's children or grand-child-
ren, who may be an undergraduate student in good standing, as
he shall appoint. -
The founder reserves the right during his liſe to appoint the
beneficiary, and also the right to designate a person who shall
have, after the founder's decease, a similar right of appointment;
and after the death of both founder and such successor, and in
any previous year in case of vacancy, the right of appointment
shall rest with the Academical Faculty.

DAY FUND.
In 1832, $2Ooo. was given by Thomas Day (Y. C. 1797), of Hart-
ford, Conn., the income to be applied under the direction of the
President of the College for the time being, and in such propor-
tion as he may think fit, during the lives of Elizabeth and Olivia,
daughters of President Jeremiah Day, Thomas M. and Ellen,
children of the donor, and Charles and Elizabeth, children of
Noble Day, and during the life of the longest-lived of them, and
for twenty-one years thereafter, for the support and education,
until the time of taking their second degree, of such descendants
of the Rev. Jeremiah Day (Y. C. 1756), of Washington, Conn., as
may during the period above mentioned be educated at Yale
- College. If in any year there shall be no person entitled to aid
from said fund, the income during that year shall be added to the
principal. No graduate shall at any time be entitled to aid from
said fund, while there are undergraduates or an undergraduate
entitled to receive it, unless it shall be voluntarily relinquished
by the latter in favor of the former. In all cases it shall be within
the authorized discretion of the President to withhold the benefit
of the fund, in whole or in part, from any person otherwise enti-
tled to receive it, for immoral conduct or a violation of the College
laws; and any sum so withheld may afterwards be paid over to
such person or applied to his benefit, on his reformation, or added
to the principal, as the President shall think fit. After the expira-
tion of the period above mentioned, the fund shall become the
absolute property of the Corporation.
The President and fellows are to make good any loss in the
principal or income of this fund, during the period of trust.
The fund now amounts to $7500.

DEFOREST SCHOLARSHIPs,
One thousand dollars shal! annually be appropriated for “the
education and support at Yale College, or the University which
may grow out of it, of the male descendants of Mehitable Lock-
wood,” the mother of David C. DeForest, of New Haven, by whose
gift in 1823 these scholarships were established. In default of
descendants as aforesaid, the same sum shall be applied to the
education of others of the family of DeForest, giving preference

to the next of kin of the said donor. The Corporation may in the
default of a sufficient number of the descendants aforesaid, or of
persons of the family of DeForest applying for the benefit of the
fund, permit the unemployed surplus to accumulate to the amount
of one thousand dollars, which sum is to be replenished by accu-
mulation when reduced by distribution, and shall with the annual
appropriation above established be held for the use of suitable
persons of the family of DeForest, who shall apply for its benefits,
All the surplus over and above the said reservation of one
thousand dollars shall be applied to the education, in whole or in
part, of young men in indigent circumstances and of good talents,
to be designated DeForest Scholars. In the selection of these, :
“the religious or political opinions of themselves or family shall
not operate against or for them in any case, but a preference shall
always be given to those who are of moral and virtuous conduct;
and it is left at the discretion of the Corporation to make the
selection.” -
Due notice in the public newspapers, or otherwise, of such
vacancies as may occur, shall be given with suitable explanations,
at least once in each year.

DoDGE SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this scholarship of $700, founded in 1855 by Mr.
William E. Dodge of New York City, shall be applied to the
education of a poor student in the Academical Department, who
may have the ministry in view.
tº ELLSWORTH FUND.
This fund, received from the estate of Hon. Henry L. Ellsworth
(Y. C. 1810), is held by decree of court without conditions. The
Corporation have directed (June, 1876) that until otherwise ordered
by them, two-thirds of the income be annually applied, under
direction of the Prudential Committee, to the assistance of such
students in the undergraduate Academical Department as are
described in a will of Mr. Ellsworth, dated April 28, 1857, namely,
“those needing such assistance and having the settled and avowed
purpose of entering the Gospel ministry, and being not only men

of approved piety and good natural abilities, but men who at
least possess a full medium share of sound scholarship, and who
by their proficiency in study give decided promise of future suc-
cess and usefulness in the ministry.” The remaining third of the
income is to be applied, until otherwise ordered, under the direc-
tion of the same Committee to the assistance of deserving students
in the Theological department as described in a codicil to the
same will,

GAYLORD SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this fund, which was given in 1858 by Sereno
Gaylord, of Plymouth, Conn., and which now amounts to $946.86,
shall be paid to a student in good standing in the Academical
or Scientific Department. The right of appointment shall be
vested in the founder, his heirs and assigns forever. If in any
year no appointment shall be thus made before the first day of
July, then the Faculty shall have the right to appoint in that
year.
GOODMAN SCHOLARSHIP FUND.
Mrs. Mary A. Goodman, of New Haven, gave her estate by
will, April, 1871, to establish a scholarship or scholarships in the
Theological Department, the income of which is to be used in
aiding young men in preparing for the Gospel ministry, preference
being always given to young men of color.

GRATUITY FUND.
The annual income of this fund (now amounting to $14322.71)
shall be applied towards the tuition of indigent Academical stu-
dents. The annual income of $4,000 of the fund shall cancel each
year the tuition of eight indigent students studying for the min-
istry. -

HARMER SCHOLARSHIPS.
These scholarships are the proceeds of a bequest in 1854 of
Thomas Harmer Johns (Y. C. 1818), of Canandaigua, N. Y., for
aiding deserving and needy undergraduate students in obtaining
an education. The amount of the fund is $10,968,53, and the
scholarships shall be of not less than $100 each.

JAMES HILLHOUSE Schola RSHIP.
The interest of $1000, given in 1858 by Miss Mary L. Hillhouse,
of New Haven, shall be annually paid to a needy and meritorious
student of the Theological Department, in actual attendance

The appointment of the scholar shall be made annually, on the
recommendation of the Theological Faculty, by a vote of the
Prudential Committee, and all questions arising under this gift
shall be decided by said Committee.
The William Zofingwell Scholarship, founded in 1858 by Mrs.
Caroline M. Street, of New Haven; the Charles Atwater Scholar-
ship, founded in 1864 by Charles Atwater, Esq., of New Haven;
and the Roland Mather Scholarship, founded by Roland Mather,
Esq., of Hartford, Conn., are each of equal amount with the Şames
A ſillhouse Scholarship, and are subject to the same conditions.

Holmes SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of these Scholarships, founded in the Academical
Department and in the Sheffield Scientific School by Mr. Samuel
Holmes, of New York City, shall be paid annually to such students
from the towns of Waterbury, Wolcott, Prospect, and Middlebury,
in the State of Connecticut, as shall be appointed, within sixty
days after notification by some officer of the College, by the Board
of Agents of the Bronson Library Fund, in Waterbury; preference
being first given to those students who have received the principal
part of their education in the public schools of Waterbury, and
afterwards to students from the towns in the above-mentioned

order. In default of such appointment by said Board after such
notification, then the income for that year of any scholarships so
vacant shall be appropriated by the Prudential Committee of the
College, or their successors, to such deserving students needing
aid as they may select, preference being given to those having the
ministry in view. It shall be in the power of the President to
withhold the appropriation made in any year from any scholar for
immoral conduct or a violation of the laws of the College,
E. C. Jon Es SCHOLARSHIP.
This fund, of $1ooo., was given in 1873 by Mrs. Julia J. Abbe,
of Hartford, Conn., in memory of her father, Rev. E. C. Jones
(Y. C. 1831). The annual proceeds are to be given to aid such
poor, pious, worthy students, as in the judgment of the President
of the College stand most in need of such aid, in getting an edu-
cation in the College, whether academical or theological, as he
may see fit, one or more at a time.
LANGDON FUND.
The interest of this fund of four thousand dollars, bequeathed
by Solomon Langdon, of Farmington, Conn., shall be applied from
year to year for the instruction of poor and indigent undergrad-
uates of good talents in the course of education with the purpose
of devoting their lives to the Gospel Ministry, to be selected after
a strict inquiry and examination, by the President and the two
Senior Professors for the time being. - *
The interest shall be distributed in sums not exceeding $30
a year to any one beneficiary ; and in case in any one year there
shall not be a sufficient number of such persons as before described
to receive the whole amount of the interest to be distributed, the
residue shall be reserved on interest for application in manner
aforesaid, whenever a sufficient number shall be found and selected.
It was the expectation of the donor that the said sum of $30 should
be taken and deemed as in full for the annual instruction of such
beneficiaries severally. - -

LYON SCHOLARSHIPS.
The annual income of four Scholarships of one thousand dollars
each, founded in 1869–72 by Mr. Morris W. Lyon (Y. C. 1846), of
N. Y. City, shall be used in aiding worthy and needy Academical
students; the founder has a right to nominate before the I5th of
November in each year.
MACY SCHOLARSHIP.
The annual income of a bequest in 1859 of Rev. William A. Macy
(Y. C. 1844) amounting to $1521.65, shall be given to an Academ-
ical student preparing for the work of a foreign missionary, or to
the son ef a missionary. #

PARKER SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this scholarship of $10oo., founded in 1856 by Rev.
Peter Parker, M.D., (Y. C. 1831) shall be given to a student of
good ability and undoubted piety preparing for the ministry, to be
selected by the Academical Faculty unless nominated by the
founder. .
ROOT SCHOLARSHIPS.
The income of these scholarships, founded by Rev. David Root,
in 1864, of $1000. each, shall be applied in aiding indigent and
pious young men, members of the Theological Department of
Yale College, in acquiring an education for the Gospel ministry.
It is expressly understood that the beneficiaries of said scholar-
ships shall always be, in the judgment of the Faculty of the Theo-
logical Department, young men of sound evangelical principles,
of decided and hearty anti-slavery character, sentiments and sym-
pathies, and known as such to the Faculty by examination or
otherwise, and in their judgment likely to exert a good and effi-
cient influence in that behalf. And it is further understood that
the Faculty shall be competent and final judges of the qualifica-
tions required in the beneficiaries, and also that neither the color
nor the race of any of the applicants for the benefit of said schol-
arships shall be a ground of preference over other applicants.

NORMAND SMITH SCHOLARSHIP.
The interest of $1000, given in 1860 by Thomas Smith, Esq.,
of Hartford, shall be annually paid on the same conditions as the
james Hillhouse Scholarships (see page 52.)
But it is agreed that the income may be temporarily appro-
priated for the support of Professors or instructors in the Theo-
logical Department, provided the Corporation shall at any time
judge that the interests of said Department require it.
The 7%.omas R. Trowbridge Scholarship, founded in 1863 by
Thomas R. Trowbridge, Esq., of New Haven, the Borden Scholar-
ship, founded in 1864 by Richard Borden, Esq., of Fall River,
Mass., and the Orin Fowler Scholarship, founded in 1873 by Mrs.
M. B. Young, of Fall River, Mass., are each of equal amount with
the AVormand Smith Scholarship, and are subject to the same con-
ditions.
THOMSON SCHOLARSHIP.
The annual income of this scholarship, when fully established,
is to be given to a young man of promising talents, hopeful piety,
and industrious habits, who is a member of the Academical De-
partment and intends to become a minister of the Gospel or to be
permanently engaged in teaching:—the President, the Professor
of Mathematics, and the College Pastor or preacher to the Col-
lege students for the time being, to have the power to examine
and appoint the incumbent, to remove him if they shall see cause,
and to decide all questions concerning the same.

TRINITY SCHOLARSHIP.
The income of this scholarship of $1000, founded in 1855 by Hon.
Charles Atwater, Jr. (Y. C. 1834), of New Haven, shall be annu-
ally paid to such undergraduates in good standing as the founder
during his life shall appoint, or as shall after the ſounder's death
be appointed by the Rector and Wardens of Trinity Church in
New Haven; and in case of no such appointment in any year,
then the right of appointment shall rest with the Academical
Faculty. -

WHITON SCHOLARSHIP.
James M. Whiton, of Boston, Mass., conveyed by deed in 1854
to the President and Fellows a lot of land in East Boston, on con-
dition that the taxes on said land shall be duly paid until it is dis-
posed of. “On sale of said land, the sum of one thousand dollars
of the purchase money (if the sale shall produce so much) shall be
invested and be the foundation of a scholarship in the College,
the income of which shall be appropriated by the Faculty to aid
from time to time in the education of such young men as they
may think deserving, who shall be in circumstances requiring aid,
and of good talents and moral character, giving a preference to a
fatherless child when practicable; and the residue of the said
proceeds shall belong to the general funds of said College.”
The land has not yet been sold.
The other endowed scholarships have no special conditions
attached.

C. 1871), who died Aug. 8, 1871, the income to be applied to the

ELLIOTT FUND.
Of this fund, now amounting to about $1400, derived from the
sale of land bequeathed by the Rev. John Elliott, (Y. C. 1786)
D.D., of Guilford, Conn., in 1824, the interest is to be expended
in purchasing books appropriate to the Theological Department,
except one per cent, which is ever to be added annually to the
principal,
LARNED FUND,
The interest and income of $5000, bequeathed by Mrs. Irene
Larned, of New Haven, in 1877, shall be applied to the general
Library of the College in the department of English language and
literature. - -
NoAH AND JARED LINSLY FUND.
The income of this fund of eight thousand dollars (the gift of
Noah Linsly (Y. C. 1791), of Wheeling, Va., and of Dr. Jared
Linsly (Y. C. 1826), of New York City), shall be applied to the
purchase of books for the College Library in the department of
Modern European Languages. The books thus purchased shall
be inscribed with the names of the donors.

Music FUND,
The annual income of the sum of $1000, given in 1861 by Mrs.
Irene Larned, of New Haven, shall be expended from time to
time at the discretion of the Corporation in the purchase of books
relating to the science, history, or art of Music, including musical
compositions and scores and hymnology, which books shall be a
part of the Library of the College.
PERKINS FUND.
Alfred E. Perkins (Y. C. 1830), M.D., of Norwich, Conn., be-
queathed $10,000 in 1834, on condition that the sum be loaned on
mortgage of real estate of more than double its value, that it con-
tinue a permanent invested fund forever, that it be called the
Perkins Fund, that the same be kept separate from the other
funds of the College, that the interest on said sum be annually
appropriated to the increase of the library, and that the books
which may be hereafter purchased from time to time with said
interest be kept apart from the other books in said library and
form a separate and distinct portion thereof forever.

A bequest from Henry W. Scott (Y. C. 1863), received in 1872,
and now amounting to about $2,300., is to be kept at compound
interest until it reaches the sum of $5,000., and then the interest
of this sum shall be for ever applied to the increase of the College
Library. The books purchased with the proceeds of this fund
shall be distinguished by an engraved label which shall be pasted
on the inside cover of each book, and which shall read as fol-
lows:—" Yale College Library, from the fund established by
Henry W. Scott, Jr., of the class of 1863.” .
WADSworth FUND.
The sum of five hundred dollars was given in 1824 by Daniel'
Wadsworth, Esq., of Hartford, Conn., as a fund for the purchase
of books for the College Library in the department of Natural
History, including Chemistry and Geology.

Newport, R. I., on his attaining his majority, the sum of one
hundred and fifty thousand dollars, to be by them or their succes-
sors held in trust to found and maintain a Museum of Natural
History, especially in the departments of Zoology, Geology and
Mineralogy, in connection with Yale College, in the city of New
Haven, State of Connecticut. -

proof museum-building, adapted to the present requirements of
these three departments of science, but planned with especial
reference to its subsequent enlargement: the building, when com-
pleted, to become the property of said College, for the uses of this
trust, and none other.
“I further direct that the sum of twenty thousand dollars be
invested, and accumulate as a building-fund, until it shall amount
to at least one hundred thousand dollars, when it may be employed
by my said trustees, or their successors, in the erection of one or
more additions to the museum-building, or in its final completion ;
the land for the same also to be provided, free of cost or rental, by
the President and Fellows of Yale College, in New Haven, and
the entire structure, when completed, to be the property of Yale
College, for the uses of this trust, and no other. ,

“I further direct that thirty thousand dollars, the remaining
- portion of this donation, be invested, and the income from it be
expended by my said trustees, or their successors, for the care of
the museum, increase of its collections, and general interests of
the departments of science already named ; the part of the income
remaining, after providing for the general care of the museum, to
be apportioned in the following manner; three-sevenths to zool-
ogy, three-sevenths to geology, and one-seventh to mineralogy;
the said collections, as well as the museum building, to be exclu-
sively for the benefit of the various departments of said College.
“The Board of Trustees I have thus constituted, shall always
be composed of seven persons, of whom not more than four shall,
at any one time, be members of the Faculty of Yale College.
They shall have the general management of the museum, keep a
record of their doings, and annually prepare a report, setting forth
the condition of the trust and funds, and the amount of income
received and paid out by them during the previous year. This
report, signed by the trustees, shall be presented to the President
and Fellows of Yale College, in New Haven, at their annual sum-
mer session, and be by them filed in the archives of said College.
“In the event of the death or resignation of either of my said
trustees, I direct that his successor be the Governor of Connec-
ticut, who, ex-officio, shall forever afterward be a member of the
Board. Any other vacancy that may occur in the Board of Trus-
tees, either by resignation or by death, shall be filled by the
! remaining trustees, within a reasonable time after such vacancy
shall have occurred.
“I give to my said trustees, and their successors, the liberty to
appoint a treasurer, and to enter into any agreements with the
President and Fellows of Yale College, not inconsistent with the
terms of this trust, which may, in their opinion, be expedient.

WIN CHESTER OBSERVATORY.

In 1871, Hon. Oliver F. Winchester, of New Haven, constituted
(with the approval of the Corporation) a Board of Trustees, to
whom he proposed to entrust the management of an Observatory
for astronomical and physical researches in connection with Yale
College, They and their successors shall, annually, and when-
ever required, report to the Corporation of Yale College the con-
dition of this trust, and the state of the Observatory whenever it
shall have been established. The observers nominated by said
trustees shall not enter on their office without the approval of the
Corporation ;-it being understood that the appointment shall
not turn upon political or ecclesiastical considerations.
In this connection the Corporation conveyed to Mr. Winchester
for the benefit of the Observatory, a lot of land on Prospect street,
given to them for a like purpose by Mrs. Cornelia L. Hillhouse
and daughters, in 1858; it being understood that if no steps are
taken within ten years for the erection of an Observatory, the
land thus conveyed shall revert to the Corporation.

The sum of five thousand dollars was given in 1854 by Joseph
Battell, Esq., of New York City, as a permanent fund, the interest

1877, $5000, was added to the fund by the bequest of Mrs. Irene
Larned.
BISHOP PRIZE FUND.
This fund of $1000., given in 1850 by Hon. William D. Bishop
(Y. C. 1849), was designed for prizes in debate in the Linonian
Society. Since the decline of that Society, the donor has ex-
pressed his assent to any use of the income which the President

CENTUM MILLIA FUND.
Of this fund of $100,000, collected in 1833 and succeeding years,
the sum of $82,950. belongs to the general Academical Funds,

PEASE FUND.
This fund, a bequest in 1851 from Mrs. Jane Pease of Enfield,
Cönn., to the Theological Department, shall “be used and dis-
posed of in promoting the spread of pure religion and the prin-
ciples of the blessed Gospel as held by said institution, solely
within the limits of the United States, and in no other place or
nation under any circumstances whatever. The doctrines so
taught and promulgated shall be those and those only that are
now pursued and inculcated by the President and Professors of

under a resolution adopted at the meeting of the alumni, in New

in such manner as the Corporation shall from time to time direct.
In December, 1873, the Corporation directed that, until other-
