In the following pages, lists of bright stars and planets for each of the months December, 1907, January, February, and March, 1908, have been arranged for the convenience of navigators. The monthly lists contain the fixed stars given in the list on page 5, together with the four planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, excepting that stars and planets within 30° of the sun have been omitted. In the American Ephemeris for 1908, pages 324 to 399, inclusive, there are given the apparent places for every ten days of nearly 40O stars, prima- rily for the use of astronomers. To the navigator only about 40 of the brighter stars are available. By arranging a list limited approximately to stars which may be observed with the sextant when the sea horizon is visible in twilight or moonlight, the selection and identification of the stars is made easier. The quantities given in the columns headed “Daily Variation " are to be multiplied by the number of intervening days and added algebraically for dates following the 15th of the month, and subtracted algebraically for dates preceding the 15th of the month. In case of the planets, the “Daily Varia- tion ” should not be used when accurate positions are desired. The references in the footnotes give the page in the American Ephemeris and Nautical Almanac where the exact position of the planet for the time of observation may be interpolated from its daily ephemeris. . The chart attached is intended to aid in the identification of the stars on the monthly lists and has been constructed by means of a modification of Mercator's Projection. In addition to the stars on the lists, a number of fainter stars, needed to give the outlines of the principal constellations, are shown as are also the paths of the sun and moon for the year 1908. In order to avoid complication, all names and dates, as well as the paths of the planets, have been omitted from the chart. The position of the sun, moon, or a planet, for any given time can be found in the Ephemeris and laid down on the chart when necessary, and the names of the stars and constel- lations can be found by taking the approximate right ascensions and decli- nations off the chart and referring to the star lists.
