G-T 4-6 ºi S. ill; the Gauermur af Allinnis A #Irurlautafiult To the People of Illinois, Greeting: * * Fire last year destroyed resources worth $570,000,000 in the United States, of which Illinois con- tributed $28,500,000. Resources destroyed by fire are wasted. Our country is poorer by the amount of the waste. More deplorable is the loss of life by fire, an estimated total of 15,000 each year in the United States, with twice that number injured or maimed. The most startling fact is that losses have been increasing each year. Yet three-fourths of all fires are preventable through exercise of ordinary care. It is apparent that the situation challenges the earnest consideration of all. Now, therefore, I, Len Small, Governor of Illinois, do hereby appoint and proclaim the week from (ſºrtmber 3 fu (ſºrtmber II, 1925 fu he ultaeruen in the 5tate uſ 3||littuta ita 3fire #irementiun Aileek Systematic inspections of property by proper local officials will control fire hazards in any community. Careful inspections should be made during this week and continued throughout the year. … --—-- ~~~~~ School officials should see that schools are safe from fire, that ample exits are provided and that fre- quent fire drills are held. Similar precautions should be taken by those having custody of churches, theaters, hospitals, public halls, hotels and other buildings where fire would jeopardize lives. Instructive talks and programs should be given in schools and before Chambers of Commerce and civic organizations. Every citizen should rid his home of fire hazards. Rubbish should be cleaned up. Flues and heat- ing plants should be cleaned out and repaired. Defective wiring or gas connections should be remedied. The same suggestions apply to factories and places of business. In addition, fire extinguishers and other fire protection equipment should be examined and put in good condition. All should cultivate habits of carefulness in all things where danger of fire is involved. Press and pulpit can help greatly in carrying out the purposes for which Fire Prevention Week is set aside. Their cooperation is earnestly invited. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of Illinois to be affixed.
