Gardner Sash Balance Co. Chicago III. 311 FIRST NATIONAL BANK BUILDING, NOTE WHAT IT IS. The Steel Ribbon is practically indestructible, and is conse- q ii ntly superior to any quality of cord or chain. It is made specially for the purpose, and is thoroughly tested to a point far in excess of the strain to which it will be subjected. It is specially prepared to prevent corrosion. It can be painted to match the color of the woodwork. They are made with turned axles and turned wheels, and steel pins. The grooves in the pulleys are made expressly to allow the ribbon to run noiselessly. With it any door or window weighing from 5 to 5,000 lbs. can be hung in the most satisfactory manner. The pulleys are made in the best manner, with particular reference to their use with the steel ribbon. The attachments are easily applied and so constructed that the strength of the ribbon is not impaired at any point. Samples and any further information desired, sent on appli- cation. We Can Make Ribbon Cheaper Than the Cheapest Rope. We Do Not Guarantee It. F rom experience gained in refitting fifteen of the largest buildings in Chicago, besides repairing a great many windows in various buildings, we have found iiniversall}^ that too small pulleys are used in connection with heavy windows. For the best working of the windows, the following size pulleys should be used: Windows not over 40 pounds, 2 inch. 60 pounds. 2] inch. 100 pounds, 2I inch. 150 pounds, 3 inch. 250 pounds, 3I inch. 300 pounds, 4 inch. 350 pounds, 4.2 inch. While we give these sizes as furnishing the best results, and insuring long life to the hanging of the window,* the smaller sizes can be used with fair satisfaction, yet with not so per- manent results. All our pulleys in all sizes will be fonnd very heavy in comparison with other pulleys, with large pins and very snb- stantially made. The above figures are simply as a suggestion, which we have gained by our experience in rehanging old buildings. In figuring the weight of windows, 5 ponnds per square foot is the approximate weight of plate glass, and 3 pounds for donble strength. These figures can be relied npon in figuring the sizes of ribbon needed for different size sash. F. 3Ierrill, Esq., General Manaqcr: Dear Sir — We liave used the Gardner Noiseless Pulleys on most all the windows in the General Office for the last tw(* years, and have found them to give general satisfaction. The windows handle much easier and are never out of order, and so far have never had to replace one. I Ihinlc they are a great imiirovement on tlie old cord formerly used, and in the long run are much more economical. They have worked so satisfactorily that it was decided some time ago that as fast as the old cords gave out they are to be re|)laced by the Gardner system. A’onrs truly. P. A. It consists ol a ribbon made ot aluminum bronze or steel, used in connec- tion with weights in the same manner as rope or chain. l ire ribbon will not get caught, will not kink, and can not get out of order. It jjresents a neat appearance and will not collect dust or dirt. Our pulle)s are made e.xpressly lor use with ribbon, and will run smoothly and noiselessly. Our attachment, the result crt years of experiment and trial, is easil)' made and will not pull out or cut the ribbon. 'I'liis attachment is one ol the secrets ol our success, as the wooden wed^re which secures the ribbon, being less hard than the latter, will not cut it, and we can state positively, after years of experience, that no other method will give satislaction.
