DUBUQUE, IOWA AVERY L!EK..;!t COLUMBIA UfliVERSiTY, Reg. U. S. Patent OflSce BUILDING MATE.RIALS PETER J.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUILOrNC MATef(LAL.S Who We Are and What We Do T o many thousands who receive this book, we need no in¬ troduction, since we have been continuously in business in the city of Dubuque for thirty years. During that time we have conducted one of the largest lumber businesses in the Middle West and for the past ten years have disposed of our products “Direct to the Consumer.” The natural advantages which we enjoy in being located on the Mississippi River, which enables us to secure a good share of our stock by the water route, thus reducing the cost of transporting materials to our plant to a minimum, the low rail rates from all sections to this river point, the low freight rates to the various stations throughout this rich agricultural section, assured our success from the very beginning. High Quality our Constant Aim Low grade lumber and poorly manufactured mill work have been so persistently furnished to users of these commodities that many buyers have been, and no doubt still are, under the impression that a good quality was no longer obtainable, or only at exorbitantly high prices. During the years we have been disposing of our “Gilt Edge Building Materials” direct to the user, we have been able to dispel this idea from the minds of thousands upon thousands who have permitted us to supply them. Our contention that the great intelligent body of home builders and users of building materials in general would ap¬ preciate high quality lumber and mill work, has proven correct. The truly phenomenal increase in our business fully substan¬ tiates the fact that we have succeeded in establishing a reputa¬ tion for furnishing a better and more satisfactory quality of building materials than it has been possible for the users of such goods to secure elsewhere for the same money. Of the thousands of carloads of material we have sold and shipped direct to consumers throughout the country, not a single one has been rejected, and we have had no justifiable complaint whatever on quality. This, we believe, is a record without prece¬ dent and we feel justly proud of it. When you buy our “Gilt Edge Lumber and Mill Work” you secure the best that can be produced, both from a standpoint of quality of raw materials as well as workmanship. Thousands of our old customers will gladly substantiate this assertion. d.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA AUIU}INC MATERlAl^ Your Protection In the first place, any guarantee we make is backed up by our financial responsibility. Our paid-up Capital Stock and Surplus aggregates $400,000.00, and you can verify this by hav¬ ing your banker look us up through the commercial agencies. By permission, we refer you to the German Savings Bank, the Dubuque National Bank, the German Trust & Savings Bank, of this city, or you can write to any of the many mercantile es¬ tablishments in Dubuque and can secure information as to our reputation for fair dealing. Since we have shipped materials to practically every com¬ munity in the territory tributary to this market, we can without doubt refer you to some one of our customers in your neigh¬ borhood. We simply could not hope to continue this business and build it up to still greater proportions if we did not have the confidence and good will of those whom we have supplied in the past. Our steady growth can be attributed largely to the continued patronage of those with whom we deal and the assist¬ ance they give us in recommending us to their friends and neighbors. Our Complete Line of Mill Work During the first few years after inaugurating our direct to the consumer” method, we confined ourselves largely to the sale of lumber, shingles, lath and such items. Our desire to serve our customers to better advantage, impelled us to add to our assortment a complete stock of mill work and other build¬ ing specialties, but we did not issue a catalogue covering such items and showing net prices on same until we had perfected our facilities to such a degree that we were able to offer our patrons a line of “real bargains” not only from the standpoint of price alone, but “High Quality” as well. The instantaneous increase in the volume of our sales of mill work after distributing former issues of our “Home Builders’ Guide” demonstrated to us that our patrons really appreciated our efforts. The people of many communities and hundreds of carpenters and contractors regard our “Gilt Edge brand of goods as the standard of High Quality.” They know from experience that they are right, not only occasionally, but every time and all the time. Furthermore, kindly bear in mind that we are in position to ship promptly, out of stock, all items shown in our Home Builders’ Guide No. 7, and you will appreciate what it means to you to be able to secure such a line of dependable goods at an enormous saving in cost, and have them forwarded to you the same day your order reaches us, if necessary, either by local freight or loaded in car with lumber from our yards. 4 PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. l<^'‘A OUlLDfNC MATERIALS Our Low Prices Save You Money While the increased cost of some of the raw materials enter¬ ing into the manufacture of the various articles has made it necessary for us to advance our prices on some of the items listed, you will find by making comparisons with the prices demanded by retail establishments, that you can save all the way from 20 to 50 per cent by buying from us. You may wonder how this can be possible. Let us explain. We carry on hand here in Dubuque, one of the largest and what is conceded to be the most complete assortment of Lumber and Mill Work in the entire Middle West. We secure our stock in large quantities in the various items, so that a truly tre¬ mendous saving is effected in the manufacture of the goods. You can readily understand that a factory can make up several carloads of one item at a much lower price than a part of a car¬ load consisting of hundreds of items. The saving effected under our method in time and labor enables us to offer these goods at lower prices than it would cost the small factories to produce them. Our facilities for storing and loading the goods economically are of the very best; we deal direct with the consumer; conse¬ quently eliminate the cost of maintaining branch agencies, or selling through retail lumber dealers, and you save this differ¬ ence. “As Represented By Us—or Your Money Back’’ AVhen you order any mill work or other material from us and order is accepted by us, we guarantee to furnish just as repre¬ sented, and if you find anything to the contrary, we pay freight both ways and refund your money. In no case, however, can we agree to accept the return of materials made up “special.’’ By this we mean items not regular stock, or of special design or size, which cannot readily be used by other builclers, nor listed in our catalogue and therefore could not be re-sold by us. It is, of course, understood that we shall gladly rectify any error made by us in filling an order, and this applies to special items as well as stock goods. Prompt Shipments and Safe Delivery Guaranteed All items shown in this Home Builders ’ Guide, as well as lum¬ ber, shingles and such material (except a few items where ship¬ ment from factory is specified) are shipped from Dubuque, under our personal supervision, out of our own stock, and we can con¬ sequently assure everyone immediate shipment. All goods are packed carefully and in accordance with the requirements of the railroad rules, which enables us to guarantee safe delivery. Nat¬ urally, however, a shipment may be damaged in transit, but in such cases, the railroad or express company is responsible, and 5 PETER d.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUtLDINC MATERIALS is obliged to make the damage good. We will replace or repair damaged goods as may be necessary, but in all such cases we must have the freight bill issued by the agent at your station, with a notation on the original bill explaining as near as pos¬ sible the extent and nature of the damage to the goods. We can¬ not collect a claim for damages without having this freight bill with proper notation, and can consequently not entertain a claim from our customers unless they furnish us the necessary docu¬ ments which will enable us to secure reimbursement from the transporting line or lines. In cases where merely some glass is broken or the damage to the article is such that you can have it properly and promptly repaired locally, we allow you to purchase glass from your local dealer or have the repairs made, sending us receipted bill with freight receipt, showing agent’s notation of damages, and we will promptly send check to cover. Low Cost of Freight Our traffic department is under the supervision of an expert who has had years of experience in railroad office work and who is thoroughly familiar with all the details necessary to secure the very lowest rates on the various items, no matter where they are to be shipped. Many people seem to be under the impression that freight charges on building materials are enormous and that this feature prevents them from buying such items from us. The fact is that the retail yard is obliged to pay the very same freight on these very same items. You can ship the goods just as cheap as anyone; in fact, our advantageous location here makes it possible for those located in various sections of the territory tributary to this market to have their goods shipped at a lower transportation charge than your dealer who buys in other mar¬ kets. AVhat is of the greatest importance to you, however, is the established fact that these freight charges, when compared with the profits asked by the retailers, are really insignificant. Owing to some impending changes in rates, it would be impractical at this time to make up a lengthy list of stations, showing rates applying, but to give you an idea what a small percentage of the total cost of a lot of items the freight really amounts to, we are giving herewith an example : Article Price Ea. D. 5.62 " Advantages in Buying Car Lots This example will give you a fair idea how little the item of freight amounts to on any lot of material you may want shipped by local freight, and if you can arrange to have these mill work items loaded in car with lumber from our yards here, the freight in most cases will be from 35 per cent to 60 per cent less. For instance, the 4th class rate from Dubuque to Ft. Dodge is 18.3 per cwt., while the carload rate is only 8.3 per cwt. And right here is where we serve you better than anyone else and make it possible for you to take advantage of the low car-lot rates, because wC ship not merely the mill work, but lum¬ ber of every description, shingles and lath; in fact, everything right out of our stock here at Dubuque, and your entire order will come in one car. When you do not need a full carload your¬ self, get your neighbors who are needing building materials to join with you, and in this way all will save money. We will arrange to load the various orders in such a manner that all trouble and confusion will be avoided when unloading, and each man’s goods will be plainly marked. PETER d.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUrUDINC FERIAL^ Special Work Under this head would come all orders for mill work of special design and odd sizes, as is frequently required in buildings planned by architects and to meet the ideas of the owner. AVhile we advise the use of stock sizes and designs wherever feasible, we are in position to execute orders for special work promptly and at most reasonable prices. If a memorandum is sent us indicating exact sizes, also sketches or drawings where neces¬ sary, we shall gladly furnish estimate. Bear in mind, however, that the use of stock sizes is an economy, and delays are avoided. Any goods made special are not returnable under any circum¬ stances, unless of course an error has been made by us in filling order, but we guarantee in every case that the goods shipped will be according to order in quality and design. Our Prices and Terms All prices named in this catalogue are net cash with order, where orders amount to $50.00 or less, unless arrangements are made to the contrary by contract for a large amount of material, such as may be required in building a new house or barn. No cash discounts are allowed, because our margin of profit does not permit this, and those needing only a few items buy them just as cheap as those needing a large bill. All enjoy the same advantages and buy on the same basis. In cases where a bill of more than $50.00 or as much as a full carload of lumber and mill work is purchased, all we ask is that you send us a letter of reference from your banker or someone personally known to us, together with a reasonable deposit with your order and we will ship you the goods, you to pay us within ten days after arrival of car at your railroad station. This gives you ample time to unload the material and inspect it so that you can satisfy yourself that we furnished everything strictly as represented. This certainly is as fair a proposition as anyone could make. Thousands of others who have purchased their building mate¬ rial from us were more than pleased with the quality we fur¬ nished, and our service, and saved a good sum of money. Send us your orders today. s PETER J.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ, DUBUQUE, IOWA DUIUOfNC h -JtlALS A Free Trip to Dubuque T he gates of the most beautiful, most progressive, most thriving city in the Middle West are wide open to you— free of cost. You are invited to enter and be our guest. We want to show you a sample of whole-souled Dubuque hos¬ pitality such as few cities offer to the individual visitor. During the 33 years we have been in business in Dubuque, we have met thousands of the residents of this section, know them personally and have had pleasant business relations with them continuously. So satisfactory have been our dealings with them that 90 per cent of those who dealt with us the first ten years of business are still our customers. But there are a great many in this big rich ‘‘garden spot of the world” whom we have never met and are anxious to meet —men who now have no conception of Dubuque’s commercial greatness and who would find real pleasure, profit and inspira¬ tion from a visit here. We want to meet you and give you the hand of good fellow¬ ship. We want to show you why Dubuque is entitled to your recognition as the commercial center of this section, and prove to you that the people of Dubuque are your friends and appreciate your good will and that it is really largely to your advantage to deal here, especially in lumber and mill work. If you live within 350 miles of Dubuque and are in the market for a house or barn bill and are needing material enough to make a carload or more, come to Dubuque to see us. While here you can inspect our stock, select just what you want out of our thoroughly complete assortment and we can load your car the same day if desired. We shall gladly go over your proposition with you personally and in detail and can without a doubt offer suggestions that will not only save you money but will also insure you a more satisfactory and better class of material for the particular work in hand than you could secure in other quar¬ ters, and besides we will refund your railroad fare. You will save money on your bill and will have a nice trip to this beautiful city absolutely free. We will gladly furnish you an estimate on your bill if you will mail us a memorandum of your needs, but the most practical thing for you to do is to come here personally. Come and pay us a visit. We’ll be glad to meet you and shall endeavor to make your stay here a pleasant one as well as a most profitable one for you. 9 PETER d.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUIUDINC MATERIALS White Pine Doors T here is not an item that goes into the construction of a dwelling which is noticed more by the visitor than the doors. Neither is there another item, aside from the floor¬ ing, perhaps, that is subjected to such continual usage and wear as doors, and it is consequently most necessary that in selecting this item, proper care be exercised and that quality and design have first consideration. The Solid White Pine as well as the White Pine Stiles and Rails and Yellow Pine Panel Doors as shown in this book are made of the very best quality of material produced, and the manner of construction and the workmanship simply cannot be excelled. We have given these features special consideration, and in addition, are offering such designs as we have found from years of experience are the most practical and at the same time insure the buyer the patterns most popular in modern construction. We want to call your particular attention to our 2-Pan. door, our No. S-202, which we are offering with White Pine Stiles and Rails and Yellow Pine Panels, as also with Fir Panels. Both the Y. P. and Fir panels are 3-Ply Rotary Cut Veneer, a feature which makes it possible to show the beautiful grain of these woods to the best advantage, and as the experience of door manufacturers has demonstrated, produces a door that positively cannot be surpassed in quality. The Soft White Pine Stiles and Rails prevent warping and the texture of this wood harmonizes sufficiently with the panel stock so that the entire door can be finished in a manner that will produce the best results. We positively do not use any Spruce or woods of that nature in constructing the doors we style “White Pine” and we ab¬ solutely guarantee every door we furnish to be free from defects in material as well as workmanship. All doors in the sizes listed are carried in stock by us, and inasmuch as the assortment of sizes is complete and comprises all sizes required in the construction of any modern residence, our customers are assured prompt deliveries in every instance. All doors are carefully packed and the face of the package covered with water-proofed chip paper, thus protecting ship¬ ments from damage in transit. You will find our prices lower than the retail dealers are asking for an inferior quality of goods. PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUtbDINft HATCRIALB Oak Veneered Doors T here are few items in the building material line in which an inferior quality of stock has been marketed more per¬ sistently than in Veneered doors. Many manufacturers and dealers seem to have been and are still laboring under the im¬ pression that the proper thing to market in the way of hard¬ wood doors is something that can be sold at an extremely low price. As you have perhaps noticed, there is a wide difference of price made in Oak doors, but it has been demonstrated time and again that it pays to use only the very best quality, and doors constructed along lines that have been found practical and will insure the purchaser lasting qualities. To begin with, a veneered door that will stand must have a White Pine core, properly jointed. Every one of the Oak Veneered doors shown in this catalogue is built with Strictly Soft White Pine core, held together with dove tail joints. The doors are manufactured by people who have made a specialty of this item for more than a quarter of a century and they are thoroughly familiar with the best and most modern methods of construction and the handling of the veneers, and we feel we can truthfull}" say that the Oak Veneered doors we are offering have no superior on the market. Every item that goes into the construction of them is carefully selected, thoroughly kiln-dried, put together by skilled workmen in a factory equipped in every respect with the most modern machinery and appliances. A few features bearing on the care and handling of Oak Veneered doors are worthy of your attention. It should hardly be necessary to call attention to the fact that a veneered door must not be stored or hung in a building until the walls and plaster are thoroughly dried out. It should be remembered that all material in veneered doors is thoroughly kiln-dried, and if exposed to dampness or weather, it will absorb the moisture and this will naturally have a tendency to check the wood or loosen the veneer. In shipping our doors, we cover them with water-proofed chip paper and crate them. This will protect them under or¬ dinary conditions from any damage while they are in the hands of the transporting railroad lines. When the doors are received, they should be examined carefully, and if they have been damaged by exposure or rough handling, attention should be called to your local railway agent of this fact before the goods are re¬ moved from the depot and you should insist on him making 20 PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA OUILOTNC MATnniAM proper notation on the face of the expense bill setting forth as near as possible the nature and extent of the damage, if any. When doors are taken from the crates, unless stored in a dry place, a good stain or filler should be applied at once. Oak, being a porous wood, requires a pigment filler. All outside doors should have at least one coat of good exterior varnish and the top and bottom edges should be thoroughly painted with lead and oil as soon as the door is fitted. We do not recom¬ mend nor will we guarantee a veneered door for outside use when not protected from the weafher by a wide porch or overhanging projection. Doors that are exposed to the weather should be made of Solid AVhite Pine. We absolutely guarantee every door we furnish to be free from defects in material as well as workmanship and will replace any doors showing defects, due to these features. The enormously large quantities in which we handle these doors makes it possible for us to quote some exceedingly low prices and you will find our prices on these high grade Oak Veneered doors much lower than the retail dealers are asking for an inferior quality of goods. Send us your order for your requirements and be convinced. The Gilt Edge label is a posi¬ tive guarantee to you. 21 PETER J.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA Window Frames L of our Window Frames are built with a two inch Solid Sill, inch Outside Casing, Drip Cap, Blind X A. and Parting Stop all made from Northern Soft White Pine. The Pulley Stiles are %x5V2 inches, made from Soft Arkansas Yellow Pine, an ideal wood for the purpose. It is soft of texture, can be finished in the natural color or can readily be stained to harmonize with the interior trim, whether Oak or some other Hardwood. All Pulley Stiles are fitted with Lacquer faced Steel Axle Pulleys, countersunk in stiles and securely fastened with screws. We positively do not use any of the common cheap drive pulleys so frequently found in frames and which cause the carpenter as well as the owner of a building endless trouble. The quality of every single item that goes into the construc¬ tion of our frames is the very best obtainable, and we are just as exacting about the workmanship. All parts are properly mitred, beveled and cut to exact length, so that no trimming or fitting is required. Even an inexperienced mechanic can set these frames up without trouble and a good carpenter can set up all the frames for an entire house job in a few hours. Every frame is shipped Knock Down in two bundles; i. e., the head jamb, sill, outside head casing and drip cap in one, the Pulley Stiles and Outside Casing in the other. Single sash frames are constructed and bundled the same as AVindow Frames except that no pulleys are included. OUTSIDE DOOR FRAMES All of our outside door frames are built with two-ply jambs, l%x5|/^ inches, so constructed as to prevent warping and the face of the jambs all sound and practically clear lum¬ ber. These jambs, drip cap and 1 ^ 8 x 41/4 inches outside cas¬ ing are all made from Northern Soft AVhite Pine. And note in particular: All sills are two inch solid Clear Oak. This feature alone makes our frames worth considerable more than the ordinary stock being offered. These door frames are also shipped Knock Down in one bun¬ dle, This method of shipping' frames reduces the possibilities of breakage as well as freight charges to a minimum, and we can ship frames the same day your order reaches us, if neces¬ sary. Just consider the advantages we are offering you in this item alone—a big saving in cost; strictly high grade frames; prompt shipments; quick and safe deliveries because of the compact and substantial bundling, which facilitates handling by the railroad employees, and consequently lowers freight charges. Save time and money by sending us your next order. 46 PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CO.. DlfBUOUE. IOWA BtilLOfNC MATCR1AL4 Stock Designs of Stair Work Y ears of experience have demonstrated to us that the stock designs of stairs as shown in this book are adapted for use in the great majority of dwellings. The various items are of the very latest designs and made up of the highest quality of material and by thoroughly experienced workmen and the most modern machinery, so that the purchaser is assured the very highest class of stock that can be produced. The dotted lines shown on the cuts of the wall strings indi¬ cate where steps and risers are to be housed into strings. Our stock strings are not housed, since this work can be done better and cheaper by the carpenter on the job. The rise and run are invariably not determined until a building is practically com¬ pleted and the use of our stock design of stairs avoids the costly and aggravating delays always experienced when stairs are built to order. Please note that prices on stair rail and shoe include fillet strip set in rabbet. No extra charge is made for specified lengths of rail and strings. Example—A flight of stairs in (2) runs. Y. P. IOWA Wood Mantels T he demand for wood mantels is increasing daily because home builders are realizing that there is no other item that lends so much attractiveness to the living room as the old- fashioned fireplace. As the poet has so aptly said: “It is a boon to health and good cheer; it is the master-key of the imagination; the password of good fellowship, and the seal of the heart.” As everyone knows the poisoned air which accumulates in i dwellings settles to the floor and with the fireplace in the room * this poisonous air is instantly carried up the chimney, and the j installation of one of our mantels, which means a comparatively j small expenditure of money, will afford proper ventilation for ; your dwelling and it will do away with one of the greatest ] dangers to health—impure air. I I ' This item of house furnishing, however, should be selected i with extreme care, and the variety of designs that we are offering makes it possible for anyone to select a proper mantel whether for a modest little cottage or mansion. All of our mantels are built of selected oak, all lumber is , thoroughly kiln-dried, mantels are built by the most skilled ; workmen in a factojy equipped with the most modern machinery, j and not a single item is permitted to go out without being thor- , oughly inspected, thus insuring the purchaser the same high quality in this item as characterizes all of our mill work. We are showing two different styles of grates. These grates are made of the best material, scientifically constructed in every respect, and insure the buyer an outfit that will give absolute satisfaction. They are suitable for burning either wood, soft coal or hard coal. The frame and summer front are finished in oxidized copper; only the very best glazed tile are furnished for the face and hearth. PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA Detailed Deseription and General Instructions for Ordering I T is always advisable to buy a mantel outfit complete. In assembling this material we have endeavored to make the various parts interchangeable as much as possible. A com¬ plete mantel would consist of the following: Mantel, whichever design may be chosen; , The necessary amount of glazed tile for face and hearth; Grate, whichever design is selected. These grates are fitted with damper and shaker bottoms and the frame and summer front. The tile can be furnished in prac¬ tically any color desired, although the following combinations seem to be preferred : Brown, olive and white; ]\lixed dark and light green; Mixed brown and yellow; Light brown and white. In order to avoid errors and to make it possible for us to fill your order promptly it is necessary that care be exercised in writing out your order; making it explicit in every way as to what is wanted. This will not entail a lengthy description on your part, but mere definite reference to the designs and num¬ bers. As an illustration we are listing below the manner in which your order should be made up. Ship one mantel. Primrose. Grate outfit, including summer front No. 1. Tile, light brown and yellow. These three items make up a complete mantel. These mantels ai'e shipped either from Dubiuiue or factory from whichever ])oint the freight rate will be lowest to your station. 69 BUIUDINC MATERIALS PETER d.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. IOWA BUILDING MATLALALS OUTSIDE AND INSIDE MOULDINGS All patterns of mouldings shown in this book intended for exterior work, such as cornices, we furnish in STRICTLY SOFT WHITE PINE AND PRACTICALLY CLEAR. You will not find any spruce, fir, hemlock or other woods mixed in. White pine is recognized as the ideal material for outside mouldings and our slock insures you the highest quality obtainable, perfectly milled and free from the many objectionalde features usually encoun¬ tered in the average lot of mouldings that you have used. All of our Yellow Pine mouldings and interior trim are made of the celebrated Arkansas Soft Yellow Pine, a specie of this Southern timber peculiarly adapted for this class of stock. It is soft in texture, fine fibre and a most beautiful grain. It will not si)lit and sliver like so much of the yellow pine that is offered in general, and consequently makes it possible for the carpenter to do his work quicker and better. This finishing, because of its nice grain, can be readily stained to match the furniture, whether antique oak, cherry, mission oak, Flemish green or any of the popular shades. The Red Oak trim and mouldings are manufactured out of the finest oak logs produced on the table lands of Tennessee. These logs are not water soaked before they are sawn into lumber and consequently the stained stock which frequently proves sueh an annoying feature in oak trim is not to be found in the material we furnish. The oak lumber out of whieh our mouldings and trim are made is handled scientifically and properly from the time the tree is cut until the finished product reaches you. It is piled properly, thoroughly air-dried and then kiln-dried. The natural acids con¬ tained in the oak are preserved, and this feature, with perfect milling, assures our customers a product that makes it easy for the carpenter and decorator to bring out the beautiful effects natural to this wood. OAving to the scientific handling of the lumber, checked and split ends so frequently found in this class of stock are avoided, and you will not find any waste material in our products. 82 i PETER cJ.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA SEIPPEL PERFECT SILO A Silo is a most necessary improvement on the farm. The majority of wide-awake farmers realize that there is profit in a silo, since it aids in utilizing what would othei'- wise be waste, and converting it into the best of feed. Wood is the best material to use in con¬ structing a practical silo since it is the best non-conductor of heat, and it conserves the warm temperature at the beginning of fermentation so the proper acid is formed. The Seippel “Perfect Silo” is built of clear one piece fir staves only. Two piece staves are not practical and fir is con¬ ceded to be the best material on the market for durai)ility in silo construction. THE PERFECT DOOR Note the construction of the door. It cannot sag, is easily and quickly detached, cannot stick or bind, and when closed forms an absolutely air-tight job. 96 PETER J.SEIPPEL LUMBER CQ. DUBUQUE. IOWA BUILOmC MATCRIAtS THE NATURAL VISION AUTOMOBILE LENZ Per pair, regardless of size, $2.50. Parcel Post prepaid All Sizes Carried in Stock The main problem in headlight design is that of applying the light effec¬ tively for driving purposes without producing glare. After a great deal of intensive study and experimenting on the subject, F. 0. Jacobson, the inventor of the NATURAL VISION LENZ accom¬ plished this by means of a patented process of stippling on the upper half of the lens, while the bottom consists of a series of patented grooves, placed in a vertical position across the lower half. The rays of light passing through the stippled portion are softened, thus giving a soft and mellow light and eliminating the glare from the top of the reflector. The grooves on the lower portion diffuse and spread the light out over the road, doing away with the glare from the low^er portion of the reflector. This combination makes an ideal light for both city and country driving. The NATURAL VISION LENZ has six essential advantages over any other lens. 1. They give headlight range of 300 to 500 feet with standard 24 candle- power bulb, when properly focused. 2. They spread the light 75 feet on either side of the road, giving the driver a natural vision of cross roads and dangerous railroad crossings. 3. They bring the light back close to the car enabling the driver to see distinctly in turning corners, and give three times as much useful light for driving purposes. 4. They have a smooth convexed outer surface and will not fill up with mud and dust. 5. They eliminate all glare but still retain sufficient strength to pene¬ trate fog, dust and smoke, and make driving safe at 30 miles an hour under adverse weather conditions. 6. They are designed especially for country driving and comply with all city and state non-glare laws. You save the dealer’s profit on NATURAL VISION I>ENZ. All other non-glare lenses on the market retail at from $.3.50 to $5.50 per pair and are sold through dealers. We have adopted the plan of selling direct to the automobile owners, and have established a price equal to the dealer’s cost which gives you the advantage of the dealer’s profit. It is practically an impossibility to get away from these features when using any of the fibre or compressed paper boards. The base of Gilt Edge Gypsum Panel Board is rock gypsum and is more nearly like plaster than other and similar boards on the market. It has all the good qualities of lath and plaster and, in addition, is much easier applied and is less expensive. It is nailed directly to the studding and no plaster ' is required, although you can very readily apply a hard finish coat of plaster if you prefer. This, however, is not necessary since you can apply any kind of decoration right on the surface of the board and can paint it with ■ calcimine, and no panel strips are necessary. The joints are concealed by ■ filling them with Gilt Edge Crack Filler and you decorate as you would a plaster wall. You can, of course, produce a neat j)aneled effect with the aid of panel strips, and you can have any sort of panel arrangement you may desire because you are not obliged to apply the panel strips over the joints. How¬ ever, Avhen panel strips do not cover the joints the latter must be filled in the usual manner. Anyone at all handy with tools can make a finished wall. This I’anel Board is made in sheets of different sizes and a building can be finished without waiting for lathers or plasterers. Gilt Edge Gypsum Panel Board is suitable not only for new work but for repair work as well.
