BIBLE GEMS. :• """^^^ W=^ <^^^>"' («^ f'"'^ ^ sg; I Know That My Redeemer Liveth. DEAR FRIEND: Having been myself rescued from the power of sin, through the love and mercy of Jesus Christ, I have long had an earnest desire to do something that might recommend Him to my friends of the University ! of California. Every well posted person in the State must know that the many students, year by year coming outfrom Berkeley, are destined to have a very considerable influence on the people of this coast. The educa tion of the University settles that. But whether that influence shall be on the side of righteousness, purity of life and moral progress, depends upon ivhat is the foundation of our moral life. I trust that all who hove tried to post themselves on the current learn- ing of the day, have found that no amount of learning will give u^ the rnastery over the simplest bad habit, how much less purge the recoi'ds of our past lives from, guilt. Having tried by many devices to rid my- self from, evil and to live an honest and upright life, and having foi' years been baffled in every attempt, in sheer despair I turned to the much disused and neglected Bible, and by earnest prayer, found a Saviour who was able to save to the uttermost. Now I know that in the University, with all its literary and scientific training the Bible is a disused book., I speak from personal experience. It is to supply this lack to some extent at least, that I desire to present you this little book of Bible Gems. They are not my words but God's. Accept them as such and you will surely find peace. With this book go my most earnest prayers, and the prayers of many Christian people, that the Spirit may help you to believe and under- stand. Yours in the love of Christ, FRANKLIN RHODA, J Class of '73. Feuit Vale, Alameda County, California, July 18, 1382. BI15LE aEMS, SPECIAL EDITION, For the Professors, Students, and Alumni of the University of California. FRUIT VALE, ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA. OF THS OAKLAND: WEEKLY VIDETTE STEAM BOOK AND JOB PRINTING OFFICE. 1882. 'jb-b-2>Q P RE FACE. This little book o£ Gems is published for the child- ren of the Fruit Vale Sunday School, and by the aid of their contributions. The Gems have been selected after earnest prayer for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Each is intended to be a help to some soul in time of need. Christ alone is the strong ship that can carry us safely over the troubled sea of life, but one of these Gems may be a light-house to warn us from the reefs and shoals of sin ; another may be a faithful compass when clouds and darkness hang over the soul ; another may be the glorious sun shining forth when we have lost our reckoning ; another may be a life-boat to bear up the poor shipwrecked sailor; and all together may guide us at last to the Golden Gate that opens to the harbor of refuge and rest, where the heavenly city appears all glorious in the light of God's own loving presence. But to those who would drink deep of the waters of life, I can only point to the cross of Christ, and to the Bible which is filled with many more Gems as beautiful as those printed here. To all who need the salvation purchased by the in- finite love of Christ, but more especially to the child- ren who should store their minds with these precious Gems, this book is afiectionately inscribed. GEM II. THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. EXODUS XX. And God spake all these words, saying: 2 I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. heaven above, or tliat is in the earth beneath, 5 or that is in the water under the earth : Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth gene- 6 ration of them that hate me : And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain. 8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy 10 work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God : in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy 1 1 gates : For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. 12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee. 13 Thou shalt not kill. 14 Thou shalt not commit adultery. THE TEX COMMANDMENTS. 15 Thou slialt not steal. 16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour. 1 7 Thou, shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor an}i:hing that is thy neighbour's. 18 And all the people sa^v the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and 19 stood afar oft. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou ^vitli us, and we will hear: but 20 let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people. Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may 21 be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the people stood afar oft', and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was. 22 And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you fi'om heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. 24 An altar of earth thou shalt make imto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon 'thy burnt off'er- ings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless 25 thee. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast 26 polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon. GEM III. He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayers shall be abomination. — Pfoverhs xxviii^ 9. GEM IV. THE Sl^EMON ON THE MOUNT. :tATTHEW V, VI, VII. 5 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat doA^m, 2 his disciples came unto him: and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying, 3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are they that mourn : for they shall be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall in- herit the earth. 6 Blessed are they that hunger and thirst THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. after righteousness: for they shall be filled. 7 Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy. 8 Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God. 9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God. 10 Blessed are they that have been perse- cuted for righteousness^ sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 1 1 Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake. 12 Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. 13 Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot 14 of men. Ye are the light of the world. A 15 city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a lamp, and put it under a bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that 16 are in the house. Even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven . 6 THE SERMON OX THE MOUNT. 17 Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets : I came not to destroy but to 18 fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things 19 be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great 20 in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you. That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scril)es and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter the kino^- dom of heaven. 21 Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time. Thou shalt not kill : and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judge- 22 ment: but I say unto you. That every one Avho is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell 23 of fire. If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy 24 brother hath aught against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way. THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. first be reconciled to thy brother, and then come 2 5 and offer thy gift. Agree with thine adversary quickly, whiles thou art with him in the way; lest haply the ^adversary deliver thee to the judge, and the judge deliver thee to the officer, 26 and thou be cast into prison. Verily I say unto thee. Thou shalt by no means come out thence, till thou have paid the last farthing. 27 Ye have heard that it was said, Thou shalt 29 not commit adultery: but I say unto you, that every one that looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery w^ith her 29 already in his heart. And if thy right eye causeth thee to stumble, pluck it out, and cast it from thee : for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not 30 thy whole body be cast into hell. And if thy right hand causeth thee to stumble, cut itoftV and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, 31 and not thy whole body go into hell . It was said also. Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: 32 but I say unto you that every one that put- teth away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, maketh her an adulteress: and whosoever shall marry her when she is put away committeth adultery. 8 THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. 33 Again, ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine 34 oaths: but I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by the heaven, for it is the 35 throne of God; nor by the earth, for it is the footetool of his feet; nor by Jerusalem, for it 36 is the city of the great King. Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, for thou canst not 37 make one hair white or black. But let your speech be. Yea, yea; Nay, nay: and what- soever is more than these is of the evil one. 38 Ye have heard that it was said. An eye for 39 an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: but I say unto you. Resist not him that is evil : but whosoever smiteth thee on thy right cheek, 40 turn to him the other also. And if any man would go to law with thee, and take away 41 thy coat, let him have thy cloke also. And whosoever shall compel thee to go one mile, 42 go with him twain. Give to him that asketh thee, and from him that would borrow of thee turn not thou away. 43 Ye have heard that it was said. Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy: 44 but I say unto you. Love your enemies, and 45 pray for them that persecute you; that ye may be sons of your Father which is in i THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. 9 heaven : for lie maketh his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sendeth rain on the 46 just and the unjust. For if ye love them that love you, what reward have ye? do not 47 even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethern only, what do ye more than others? do not even the Gentiles the 48 same? Ye therefore shall be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect. 6 Take heed that ye do not your right- eousness before men, to be seen of them: else ye have no reward with your Father which is in heaven. 2 When therefore thou doest alms, sound not a trumpet before thee, as the hypocrites do in the sjniagogues and in the streets, that they may have glory of men. Verily I say unto 3 you. They have received their reward. But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand 4 know what thy right hand doeth: that thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret shall recompense thee. 5 And when ye pray, ye shall not be as the hypocrites: for they love to stand and pray in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Ver- ily I say unto you. They have received their 6 reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter 10 THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. into thine inner cliamber, and having shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in se- cret, and thy Father which seeth in secret 7 shall recompense thee. And in praying use not vain repetitions, as the Gentiles do : for they think that they shall be heard for their 8 much speaking. Be not therefore like unto them : for your Father knoweth what things ye 9 have need of, before ye ask him. After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which 10 art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in 11 heaven, so on earth. Give us this day our 12 daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as 13 we also have forgiven our debtors. And bring us not into temptation, but deliver us 14 from the evil one. For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will 15 also forgive you. But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses. 16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hyp- ocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfig- ure their faces, that they may be seen of men to fast. Verily I say imto you. They have 17 received their reward. But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thy head, and wash thy face ; 18 that thou be not seen of men to fast, but of THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. 11 thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall recompense thee. 19 Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon the earth, where moth and rust doth consume, and where thieves break through and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, ^vhere neither moth nor rust doth consume, and where thieves do not l)reak through nor 21 steal: for where thy treasure is, there will 22 thy heart be also. The lamp of the body is the eye : if therefore thine eye be single, thy 23 whole body shall be full of light. But if thine eye be evil, thy w^hole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is the dark- 24 ness! No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other ; or else he will hold to one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. 25 Therefore I say unto you. Be not anxious for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink ; nor yet for your body, w^hat ye shall put on. Is not the life more than the food, 26 and the body than the raiment? Behold the birds of the heaven, that they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; and your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are not ye 27 of much more value than they? And which 12 THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. of you by being anxious can add one cubit 28 unto his stature? And why are ye anxious concerning raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, 29 neither do they spin: yet I say unto you, that even Solomon in all his glory was not 30 arrayed like one of these. But if God doth so clothe the grass of the field, which to-day is, and to-morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little 31 faith? Be not therefore anxious, saying, What shall we eat ? or. What shall we drink ? 32 or. Wherewithal shall we be clothed? For after all these things do the Gentiles seek; for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye 33 have need of all these things. But seek ye first his kingdom, and his righteousness ; and 34 all these things shall be added unto you. Be not therefore anxious for the morrow: for the morrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. 7 Judge not, that ye be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it 3 shall be measured unto you. And why be- holdest thou the mote that i^ in thy brother's eye, but considerest not the beam that is in 4 thine own eye ? Or how wilt thou say to thy THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. 13 brother, Let me cast out the mote out of thine eye ; and lo, the beam is in thine own 5 eye ? Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye. 6 Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast your pearls before the swine, lest haply they trample them under their feet, and turn and rend you. 7 Ask, and it shall be given you ; seek, and ye shall find ; knock, and it shall be opened 8 unto you: for every one that asketh receiv- eth ; and he that seeketh findeth ; and to him 9 that knocketh it shall be opened. Or what man is there of you, who, if his son shall ask 10 him for a loaf, will give him a stone; or if he shall ask for a fish, will give him a ser- 11 pent? If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father w^hich is in heaven 12 give good things to them that ask him? All things therefore whatsoever ye would that men should do unto you, even so do ye also unto them: for this is the law and the prophets. 13 Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wdde is the gate, and broad is the way, that lead- eth to destruction, and many be they that 14 THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT. 14 enter in thereby. For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto * life, and few be they that find it. 15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly are ra- 16 vening wolves. By their fruits ye shall know them. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or 17 figs of thistles? Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but the corrupt 18 tree bringeth forth evil fruit. A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a 19 corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn 20 down, and cast into the fire. Therefore by 21 their fruits ye shall know them. Not every one that saith unto me. Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven ; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in 22 heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy by thy name, and by thy name cast out devils, and by thy 23 name do many mighty works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you, depart from me, ye that work iniquity. 24 Every one therefore which heareth these words of mine, and doeth them, shall be likened unto a wise man, which built his 25 house upon the rock : and the rain descended : THE BLESSING AND THE CURSE. 15 and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it 26 was founded upon the rock. And eveiy one that heareth these words of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand : 27 and the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds l)lew, and smote upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall thereof. 28 And it came to pass, when Jesus ended these words, the multitudes were astonished 29 at his teachins;: for he tauo-ht them as one haWng authority, and not as their scribes. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yes- terdsBy when it is past. And as a watch in the night. Yet is their strength labour and sorrow; For it is soon cut ofif, and we fly away. 11 Who knoweth the power of thine anger? NO CONDEMNATION TO THEM THAT AEE IN CHEIST JESUS. ROMANS VIII. There is jtherefore now no condemnation 2 to them that are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus made me free from the law of sin and of death. 3 For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God, sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and as an offering for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: 4 that the ordinance of the law might be ful- filled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but 5 after the spirit. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the spirit the things of 6 the spirit . For the mind of the flesh is death ; but the mind of the spirit is life and peace: 7 because the mind of the flesh is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law 8 of God, neither indeed can it be: and they 9 that are in the flesh cannot please God. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if so , be that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you. But if any man hath not the Spirit of Christ, 10 he is none of his. And if Christ is in you. NO CONDEMNATION, ETC. 37 • the body is dead because of sin; but the 1 1 spirit is life because of righteousness. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwelleth in you, he that raised up Christ Jesus from the dead shall quicken also your mortal bodies through his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12 So then, brethren, we are debtors, not to 13 the flesh, to live after the flesh: for if ye live after the flesh, ye must die; but if by the spirit ye mortify the deeds of the body, ye 14 shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are the sons of God. 15 For ye receive not the spirit of bondage again unto fear; but ye receive the spirit of 16 adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit himself beareth witness with our 17 spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children^ then heirs ; heirs of God, and joint- heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified with hira. 18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us- 19 ward. For the earnest expectation of the creation waiteth for the revealing of the sons 20 of God. For the creation was subjected to vanity, not of its own will, but by reason of 38 NO CONDEMNATION, ETC 21 liim who subjected it, in hope that the crea- tion itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the 22 glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travail - 23 eth in pain together until now. And not only so, but ourselves also, which have the first- fruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for our adoption, 24 to -wit, the redemption of our body. For by hope were we saved: but hope that is seen is not hope : for who hopeth for that which he 25 seeth? But if we hope for that which we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. 26 And in like manner the Spirit also help- eth our infirmity: for we know not how to pray as we ought; but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings 27 which cannot be uttered; and he that search- eth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for 28 the saints according to the will of God. And we know that to them that love God all things work together for good, even to them that are 29 called according to his purpose. For whom lie foreknew, he also foreordained to be con- formed to the image of his Son, that he might 30 be the firstborn among many brethren : and NO CONDEMNATION, ETC. 39 whom he foreordained, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31 What then shall we say to these things? 3 2. If God is for us, who is against us? He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not also with him 33 freely give us all things ? Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is 34 God that justifieth; who is he that shall con- demn? It is Christ Jesus that died, yea rather, that was raised from the dead, who is at the right hand of God, who also maketh 35 intercession for us. Who shall separate us fi'om the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or anguish, or persecution, or famine, or naked- 30 ness, or peril', or sword? Even as it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; We were accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37 Nay, in all these things we are more than 38 conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things pres- 39 ent, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 40 YOUTH AND AGE. REVELATIONS XXI, XXII. 21 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for tlie first heaven and the first earth are 2 passed away; and the sea is no more. And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, made ready 3 as a bride adorned for lier husband. And I heard a great voice out of tlie throne saying. Behold, the tabernacle of God is witli men, and he shall dwell with them, and they shall be his peoples, and God himself shall be with 4 them, and be their God: and he shall wipe away every tear from their eyes ; and death shall be no more; neither shall there be THE NEW JERUSALEM. 53 mourning, nor crying, nor pain, any more: 5 the first things are passed away. And he that sitteth on the. throne said. Behold, I make all things new. And he saith, Write: 6 for these words are faithful and true. And he said unto me. They are come to pass. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. I will give unto him that is athirst of the fountain of the water of life 7 freely. He that overcometh shall inherit these things; and I w^ill be his God, and he 8 shall be my son. But for the fearful, and unbelieving, and abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, their part shall be in the lake that burneth with fire and brimstone; whij^h is the second death. 9 And there came one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls, who were laden with the seven last plagues; and he spake with me, saying. Come hither, I will shew 10 thee the bride, the wife of the Lamb. And he carried me away in the Spirit to a moun- tain great and high, and shewed me the holy city Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven 11 from God, having the glory of God: her light was like unto a stone most precious, as 12 it were a jasper stone, clear as crystal: hav- THE NEW JERUSALEM. mg a wall great and high ; having twelve gates, and at the gates twelve angels ; and names written thereon, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the children of Israel : 13 on the east were three gates ; and on the north three gates; and on the south three gates; 14 and on the west three gates. And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them twelve names of the twelve apostles of 15 the Lamb. And he that spake with me had for a measure a golden reed to measure the city, and the gates thereof, and the wall 16 thereof. And the city lieth foursquare, and the length thereof is as great as the breadth : and he measured the city with the reed, twelve thousand furlongs : the length and the breadth and the height thereof are equal. 17 And he measured the wall thereof, a hundred and forty and four cubits, according to the 18 measure of a man, that is, of an angel. And the building of the wall thereof was jasper: and the city was pure gold, like unto pure 19 glass. The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of pre- cious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; 20 the fourth, emerald; the fifth, sardonyx; the sixth, sardius; the seventh, chrysolite; the THE NEW JERUSALEM. 55 eighth, beryl; the ninth, topaz; the tenth, chrysoprase; the eleventh, jacinth; the 21 twelfth, amethyst. And the twelve gates were twelve pearls; each one of the several gates was of one pearl : and the street of the city was pure gold, as it were transparent 22 glass. And I saw no temple therein : for the Lord God the Almighty, and the Lamb, are 23 the temple thereof. And the city hath no need of the sun, neither of the moon, to shine upon it: for the glory of God did 24 lighten it, and the lamp thereof is the Lamb. And the nations shall ^valk amidst the light thereof: and the kings of the earth do brmg 25 their glory into it. And the gates thereof shall in no wise be shut by day (for there 26 shall be no night there) : and they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into 27 it: and there shall in no wise enter into it anything unclean, or he that maketh an abomination and a lie: but only they which , 22 are written in the Lamb's book of life. And he shewed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding out of the *throne of God and of the Lamb, in the midst of the 2 street thereof. And on this side of the river and on that was the tree of life, bearing twelve manner of fruits, yielding its fruit 56 THE NEW JERUSALEM. every month : and the leaves of the tree were 3 for the healing of the nations . And there shall be no curse any more: and the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be therein: 4 and his servants shall do him service; and they shall see his face; and his name shall 5 be on their foreheads. And there shall be night no more; and they need no light of lamp, neither light of sun; for the Lord God shall give them light : and they shall reign for ever and ever. 6 And he said unto me, These words are faithful and true: and the Lord, the God of the spirits of the prophets, sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must 7 shortly come to pass. And behold, I come quickly. Blessed is he that keepeth the words of the prophecy of this book. 8 And I John am he that heard and saw these things. And when I heard and saw, I fell down to worship before the feet of the 9 angel which shewed me these things. And he saith unto me. See thou do it not: I am a fellow-servant with thee and with thy breth- ren the prophets, and with them which keep the words of this book : worship God. 10 And he saith unto me, Seal not up the words of the prophecy of this book;*the for THE NEW JERUSALEM. 57 11 time is at hand. He that is unrighteous, let him do unrighteousness still: and he that is filthy, let him be made filthy still : and he that is righteous, let him do righteousness still: and he that is holy, let him be made 12 holy still. Behold, I come quickly; and my reward is with me, to render to each man ac- 13 cording as his work is. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the begin- 14 ning and the end. Blessed are they that wash their robes, that they may have the right to come to the tree of life, and may 15 enter in by the gates into the city. Without are the dogs, and the sorcerers, and the for- nicators, and the murderers, and the idola- ters, and every one that loveth and maketh a lie. 16 I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things for the churches. I am •the root and offspring of David, the bright, the morning star. 17 And the Spirit and the bride say. Come. And he that heareth, let him say. Come. And he that is athirst, let him come : he that will, let him take the water of life freely. 18 I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book. If any man shall add unto them, God shall add unto 58 THE NEW JERUSALEM. him the plagues which are written in this 19 book: and if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the tree of life, and out of the holy city, which are written in this book. 20 He which testifieth these things saith, Yea: I come quickly. Amen: come, Lord Jesus. 21 The grace of the Lord Jesus be with the saints. Amen. GEM XXXIX.
