PRINTED FROM A MS. IN THE POSSESSION OF SIR HENRY PEEK, Bart. Privately Printed. LONDON : WYMAN AND SONS, PKINTERS, GREAT QUEEN STREET, Lincoln's- INN fields, w.c. PREFACE. rjlHE MS. from whicli this book has been printed is the Diary of Mr. Justice .Rokeby. It is bound in leather, and the date 1688 is stamped on the back, as are also the letters AA under the date. These letters are evident proof of the existence at one time of more MSS. of this eminent Judge. It contains ninety-four leaves, the numbering of which commences on the third leaf. The two metal clasps which once kept it closed have been broken off. On the front cover the date 1 Mar., 1688, and the signature, Thomas Eokeby, are written, as is also the entry as given p. 1. Thomas Uokeby, the writer of this MS., was the second son of Thomas Rokeby, of Sandal, Yorkshire, and a memoir of him, containing his journal, &c., will be found printed in the publication of the Surtees Society for 1861, ably edited by Canon Eaine. He was born in 1631 or 1632. On 20th June, 1646, he was admitted a pensioner at Catherine Hall, Cambridge. In January, 1649-50, he became a B.A. At Christmas, 1650, he was made a Fellow of his College. The following extract from the Book of Admissions of Gray's Inn, vol. II., p. 1,051, shows the date at which he entered that Society : — Decimo septimo die Maii, 1650. I. g. A, Sot. 3.6.8. Thomas Rokeby filius secundus Thomse Rokeby de Burnby in Com York Armig Admiss est in societatem huius hospitij die et ano sup^dict. THO: BRICKENDEK After he was called to the bar he seems to have passed a considerable portion of each year in chambers at Gray's Inn. His country residence when . 131 IV PEEFAOB. term was over was at York. He married Ursula, daughter of James Danby, of Newbuilding, Thirsk. He was the principal adviser of the Non- conformists in the North of England and took a leading part in the movement in favour of the Prince of Orange. ' The entries made on the cover, the first leaf, and the first twenty pages were made before he was raised to the Bench, which took place on the 8th of May, 1689,* when he was placed in the Common Pleas, whence he was removed, 25th October, 1695,t to the King's Bench, where he remained till his death on 26th November, 1699. He was buried at Sandal, near Doncaster. Full particulars as to his family, &c., have already been printed in the publication of the Surtees Society which has been before referred to.
