LIBRARY 't y of Call, .-nia - *"*" SHORT CATALOGUES OF ENGLISH BOOKS PRINTED BEFORE MDCXLI II EMMANUEL COLLEGE CAMBRIDGE C. ft YYI lor \4gje* LW\ \/fe.rsi4y. / A HAND-LIST OF ENGLISH BOOKS IN THE LIBRARY OF EMMANUEL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE PRINTED BEFORE MDCXLI PRINTED FOR THE BIBLIOGRAPHICAL SOCIETY AT THE CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS z NOTE In 1905 ' A Short Catalogue of English Books in Archbishop Marsh's Library, Dublin, printed before MDCXLI. By Newport J. D. White, D.D., Marsh's Librarian ' was issued at the joint expense of the Curators of the Library and the Bibliographical Society. It was hoped that the offer of pecuniary help and sympathetic readers would induce other libraries to arrange for the publication of similar lists ; but for ten years there was no response. The Society is now indebted to the Governing Body of Emmanuel College, Cambridge, for the generous permission to print for itself an edition of the present Hand-List without making any contribution to the cost of composition. It is earnestly desired that the series of ' Short Catalogues of English Books printed before MDCXLI,' now resumed on such favourable conditions, may be continued at less lengthy intervals. i ALFRED W. POLLARD. Who is not sensible with sorrow of the distractions of this age ? But be pleased to know that when I left my home, it was fair weather, and my journey was half past, before I discovered the tempest, and had gone so farre in this Work, that I could neither go backward with credit, nor forward with comfort. THOMAS FULLER (1642) PREFACE THE present Hand-list is an abridgment of a slip catalogue of English printed books to 1640, which was begun in 1909 at the suggestion of Mr C. E. Sayle of the University Library and was completed in 1913. The books (in number about 2,600) are arranged according to their authors, when known: the titles are abbreviated as much as possible: and each entry also gives the size of the book with the date, the printer's name and the place of printing, when these are known. The original spelling has been retained both in the imprints and in the abbreviated titles. An index of printers and booksellers and an index of places of printing have been added. No attempt has been made to indicate the source from which each book came to the Library; in most cases the evidence is inconclusive, but it is certain that a large number of the more valuable books were presented by Archbishop Sancroft (Master of the College, 1662-1665) or bequeathed by John Breton (Master, 1665-1675). During the last six years both the compilers of this list have been engaged in other work so that only disconnected periods could be devoted to bibliography, and it is therefore inevitable that there should be inaccuracies and inconsistencies. Publication without further delay was decided upon in the hope that Librarians of other Colleges will compile similar lists for their own Libraries. As far back as 1892 Mr Sayle circulated proposals for a "Hand-list of Early English Books in the University of Cambridge to A.D. 1640"; but his proposals and others made privately again in 1913 met with no support. viii PREFACE The greater part of the work has been done by the Library Clerk, Mr G. H. Watts, who has shown admirable skill and patience throughout. A large number of doubtful points have been cleared up by an appeal to Mr Sayle, and I gladly take this opportunity of offering him my best thanks for his unfailing kindness in placing at our disposal his vast stores of bibliographical knowledge and experience. I need hardly add that his Early English Printed Books in the University Library, Cambridge has been invaluable; the identification of imperfect copies of the Bible was established by reference to the Historical Catalogue of the printed editions of Holy Scripture in the Library of the British and Foreign Bible Society compiled by Mr T. H. Darlow and Dr H. F. Moule. In the later stages of our work Dr M c Kerrow's Monograph on Printers' and Pub- lishers' Devices gave clues to many printers not previously identified. If this Hand-list has any merits, they are entirely due to Mr Sayle and to Mr Watts; for its many faults Mr Watts and myself are jointly responsible. I have to thank the Governing Body of the College for their encourage- ment and for defraying the expenses of publication. P. WORSLEY WOOD. EMMANUEL COLLEGE, CAMBRIDGE. Feb. 1915.
