HARFIELD J S COMMERCIAL DIREC JEWS Of THE UNITED plGDO|l. COMMERCIAL DIRECTORY OF THE JEWS UNITED KINGDOM G. EUGENE HARFIELD, Author of "THE PAST FROM A FUTURE STANDPOINT," "AN ORIENTAL CONSTELLATION," "EL ANSE," ETC. A V LONDON AND RICHMOND, U.S.A. HEWLETT & PIERCE. 5654: 1894. ENTERED AT STATIONERS' HALL, LONDON, IN THE YEAR 1894, BY G. EUGENE HARFIELD. TO HEAVEN'S WILL AND PALESTINE'S FUTURE I HUMBLY DEDICATE THIS VOLUME. 2095C97 INTRODUCTION. The utility of the directory as a medium for consultation, both in a business and general manner, is too well known to require special comment by way of introduction here. That such a compilation of any particular sect or class selected from a country's inhabitants apart from its creedal statistics and ceremonies is at all requisite, or, to say the least, judicious, must be certainly negatived, in as much as they constitute a part of the whole of that country's population, responsible alike for its progression and contributing equally towards the maintenance of its dignity. To reduce, for instance, to certain statis- tical environment the Puritan, or Quaker class as in contradistinction to the Wesleyan, or Protestant, or Dissenter ; that is to say, that to enumerate, define and to publish their several individual pursuits or INTRODUCTION. collective financial status as an exemplar of excep- tional prosperity where civil and religious liberty is a safeguard to persecution, even annoyance, would be not only to enter a disclaimer to the established principles Of freedom, but to demur at the introduc- tion of liberty itself. The fact of class-distinction perse apart from spiritual tendency would at once proclaim desirability for severance from the body politic and invite enviable comparison, the hot-bed of contention and avarice, open the gates of the dark ages that have so firmly been barred since the close of the fourteenth century, and revive the wearing of the stigmatised "Rouelle" enacted by the so-called " Saint " Louis of France and Pope " Innocent " III. at what was known as " The Council of Lateran," in the middle of the thirteenth century. Yet though such inconsistency might be objec- tionable, even unpardonable, in any national branch, forming, as it does, an actual part of the national tree, no such charge could be laid at the door of the Jew- ish race, being a nation of itself, unconnected genea- logically with any other, either by admixture or grafting; and however much we may commingle socially or in mercantility ; or, as is our pleasurable duty, give to that country in which we severally dwell our patriotic devotion, we are still an individual people, and in the introduction of such a compilation disloyal to no tutelary power. That such a publication is at all necessary cannot be even personally affirmed INTRODUCTION. at first glance, and it must be admitted, however reluctantly, that its inception by the editor, is but the result of a pardonable desire for novelty the per- missibility for the assumption of the which history furnishes many a precedent and to which even many an important city owed its origin and many an empire its downfall. And, who knows, but this, the first of its kind in the history of Directories, may prove conducive, in a measure, to some beneficial result. Among many other allegations of Russia, ex- clusive of its sectarian objectiveness, is that of the uselessness of the Jewish subjects on the ground that they confine themselves to a few chosen trades only, thereby contributing but little to the country's credit. The list of trades and professions and various mer- cantile pursuits in the hands of the Jews of this country, at once the most extensive and flourishing realmdom under the sun, yet the most tolerant, and where perfect freedom is accorded all dogmatical dissentients with a most lavish hand, tend to dispel any blame that may be attached to them on that account, by reason of restriction and proscription there. Bah ! it is the old story of envy and avarice of the indolent spendthrift towards the thrifty, integral economist ! Not alone is the result of their frugality kept under constant surveillance by the " green- eyed monster " but the simplicity and purity of their lives form a continual reproach to their licentiousness! INTRODUCTION. History teems with such records in every age and clime and among all nationalities and creeds, though it has been the misfortune of Israel to suffer most, as much because of their steadfast adherence to national characteristics as to the state of enervated - ness born of incessant attrition and remembrance of forfeited grandeur; bowing in contrite submission to the chastening will that exiled them their native land. Therefore, while we rejoice when we hear of success- ful achievement on the part of our brethren in other lands, we can only heave a deep sympathetic sigh when we hear of their reverses and console ourselves with the knowledge that as in our good- so in our evil fortunes God is still with us, though in the latter instance it be with a chastening hand. It is this, I take it, that King Solomon meant when he said " If thou seest the oppression of the poor and violent perversion of judgment in a province, marvel not at the matter ; for He that is higher than the highest regardeth. So there be then higher than they." They may, with no little advantage to them- selves, regard this little volume who are foremost and loudest in racial denunciation. A word regarding its scriptural allowability. That it is forbidden to number Israel is general- ly conceded especially after a calamitous visitation, either by epidemic or war as deduced from King David's confession to its guiltiness to the prophet Gad, after a battle with his arch-enemy the Philistines, INTRODUCTION. when he took the strength of his surviving army ; for the strength of Israel lies not in their number but in their Protector, and in no instance do we find an entire census of them taken, excepting in the intro- duction of Jacob and his family into Egypt, for the purpose of future comparison. In accordance then with this precedent it has not been the intention to give a census of the Jews of the United Kingdom but a business reference of " Rosh B'nai Israel," the heads of the families established in mercantile pursuit in this country. It is recorded, somewhere, that the ancient Britons were among the Roman detachment at the siege of Jerusalem, and that they were the most zealous in the application of the torch to the temple. Many a century has since revolved round the wheel of time, and though they have themselves become extinct as a people, their successors of to-day they cannot be termed survivors do harbor a large portion of their number and are on most amicable terms with them, whilst the latter are a credit both socially and financially to the country that was among the first to oppress them and the first to plant the standard of civil and religious tolerance. Who knows for who can be so blind as not to see the practical Finger of Providence in all this but that this country, one of the instruments of chastisement, may yet prove to become the first to say unto them, " Our hearts will go with you to your own native land, INTRODUCTION. for we have heard that God is with you." And in that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the land : whom the Lord of Hosts shall bless, saying,. Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of mine hands, and Israel my inheritance." She who, like those countries, was among the first to oppress, may become God's first honored instrument in reclaiming that bit of land for them adjacent its African occu- pancy, and, in union with the sheltering wing of our Royal Father, constitute herself its protectorate. Then, indeed, will the words be realised which He spoke by Isaiah, in this latter time, as it was in the days of the Babylonian return, as expressed by Nehemiah " And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more stay upon him that smote them"; but shall, in truth, stay upon the Lord, the Holy One of Israel. The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God." London, July 6, 1893 5^53- THE EDITOR. N.B. Owing to some unforseen circumstances, coupled with the rather too protracted delay of its publication, we regret that this is not in as complete a form as we could wish, and promise in the second a more amplified edition.
