PRAYER FOR MOURNERS. I^TPM w O Lord God, who dwellest in the high and holy place, and also with the humble and contrite spirit, in thee I put my trust; for thou alone knowest the end of our days and the secret thoughts of our hearts, and from thee proceed the decrees whether of our life or of our death. Remember thou in thy goodness the soul of my father (mother), which thou hast recalled to peaceful rest. Thou, O Lord, didst give, and thou, O Lord, hast taken away; may thy name, O Lord, be blessed. Thou who hearest prayer, I implore thee, deal not with man after his deserts, for we are but dust and ashes, and our days are fleeting as a shadow. Lift up also upon me, O God, the light of thy countenance, and vouchsafe in thy grace to support and to sustain me, so that I may walk before thee in rectitude and in obedience to thy divine behests, and that I may die the death of the righteous, and that my end be like theirs. TTMu? nbsn A Prayer of Moses the man of God. — O Lord ! thou hast been our refuge in all generations. Ere the moun- tains were brought forth, ere thou formedst the earth and the world; from eternity to eternity thou art omnipotent! Thou re- ducest man to humiliation : then thou say est. Return, ye children of men. For a thousand years in thy sight are but as yesterday, which is passed ; and as a watch in the night. Thou carriest them away as with a torrent ; they are as in a sleep : in the morning they are like grass which groweth. In the morning it flourisheth, and is renovated : in the evening it is cut down, and withereth. Thus are we consumed by thine anger, and troubled by thy wrath. Thou hast set our iniquities before thee, our secret sins before the light of thy countenance. For all our days are passed away in thy wrath : we spend our years as a tale that is told. The days of our years are threescore years and ten ; and if by reason of strength they be four- score years, yet is their increase but labour and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away. Who knoweth the power of thine anger? Even as the fear of thee, so is thy wrath. So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts to wisdom. Return, unto us, O Lord ! How long yet ? — Again have pity on thy servants. Satisfy us early with thy mercy ; that we may rejoice and be glad all our days. Make us rejoice according to the days wherein thou hast af- flicted us, and the years, in which we only saw trouble. Let thy work appear unto thy servants, and thy glory unto their children. And may the beauty of the Lord our God be upon us : and establish thou the work of our hands upon us ; yea, the work of our hands establish thou it ! vol,, v. l DV2D TJSH anj^ cihsb) mk>\ *\m nan nx fni « dw p toan W? rra new wnSw M : (n^s) S*ob» ntoaa rw rrnto^ ata to; 'spgni nvaxi. nT&e> ^"rpna SjdS pmS nSy£ nSyD nyWit d^k rb ana Tfrip aS : twraa p] ' aJT^v S^ni ton na rt&j^ [y&S nbai njrrc miNa : pa pnana « njsrn npnasn fiaa rrnj r\$nx tojjjd pn pTO ria uk n"n nnx nyis ^nx * o^Nn-B^K r\mh nWi . We have heard with our ears, O God, our fathers have told us, what work thou didst in their days, in the times of old. How thou didst drive out the heathen with thy hand, and plantedst them ; how thou didst afflict the people, and cast them out. For they got not the land in possession by their own sword, neither did their arm save them : but thy right hand, and thine arm, and the light of thy countenance, because thou hadst a favour unto them. Thou art my King, O God : command deliverances for Jacob. Through thee will we push down our enemies : through thy name will we tread them under that rise up against us. For I will not trust in my bow, neither shall my sword save me. But thou hast saved us from our enemies, and hast put them to shame that hated us. In God we boast all the day long, and praise thy name for ever. Selah. But thou hast cast off, and put us to shame ; and goest not forth with our armies. Thou makest us to turn back from the enemy: and they which hate us spoil for themselves. Thou hast given us like sheep appointed for meat; and hast scat- tered us among the heathen. Thou sellest thy people for nought, and thou reapest no gain by their price. Thou makest us a reproach to our neighbours, a scorn and a derision to them that are round about us. Thou makest us a byword among the heathen, a shaking of the head among the people. My confusion is con- tinually before me, and the shame of my face hath covered me ; for the voice of him that reproacheth and blasphemeth ; by reason of the enemy and avenger. All this is come upon us ; yet have we not forgotten thee, neither have we dealt falsely with thy covenant. Our heart is not turned back, neither have our steps declined from thy way ; though thou hast sore broken us in the place of dragons, and covered us with the shadow of death. If we have forgotten the name of our God, or stretched out our hands to a strange god, shall not God search this out? for he knoweth the secrets of the heart. Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long ; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. Awake, why sleepest thou, O Lord ? Arise, cast us not off for ever. O Lord God of Israel ! turn from thy hot displeasure, and repent of the evil concerning thy people. O Lord, I deeply deplore the day on which the king of Babylon approached Jerusalem to besiege it ; when in the greatness of his pride he spread his armies before the holy city, when his right hand was like an enchantment against Zion, and when those who were engaged in pious works, poured forth their blood like water in the streets of Jerusalem. He made me faint and dreary when he brought low the majesty of Judah, and destroyed the excellency of Jerusalem. He overthrew the tower, and laid the canopy in the dust ; he kin- dled a fire in Zion which devoured her palaces ; he stirred up the Assyrians against my children, on the day that the Lord brought calamity to the gates of Jerusalem. Consider, O Eternal, my distresses, for I look in vain around for help; mine enemy hath pressed sorely upon me, and Zion hath become a ruin. We have patiently waited that our wounds might be healed, but, alas ! anguish is yet upon us. O Lord ! how long shall it be ere thou wilt turn in compassion to Zion ? O Lord God of Israel ! turn from thy hot displeasure, and repent of the evil concerning thy people. -b nx inx-i^x D^nn nlrtai rnp-|n nnv n&»i : nog t J- • v -; J-t-;|- s"T t ; - "It I v |tt | | I I "- HBwarrtB rpjnrp War rwa teti -ib>k byn rmx# Mfti nbrfasn mx D*^ Dp*nx-p n^na-na ron nnx on&3 rvnaa ob^ d^i : mnaa n^n n^N rariDi to *3 D^an vdb : onro xnb roSS dhS rva Wtn r • ; — ■• ; • * l T : " ' t «••• t vat j- v^ -1 •.- -; oirnx-p vrWrw rnnra Wo^ nirra Drr:&& wtt |t • ": I v t; -; v t; - : I v j" t ; • t • (■ /,:■ " i ' I :|t 'k pbn 'iifK 13 -inm ■ :'a -m po -iy a'3 *p 'n p"?ra D^ajn rmnp -inn roia •. nnnitf nbsn ^id ii; 'a «p rotas may*? rmrw : '3 t)T mmn imj -iy 'k tp 'x p"?n rvinw n'jsn k*3t "3 hi "n pbn 3N3 nyun 1 ? nnsna i03 roiaa mwj/ 1 ? mw nKnp : ^y_S nynn Sy_ oron} • ^sx fhqo n^ • Sxn^. \nSx » : pSg*n\ Sx * Vnii ^§ ^od dv -S^x Ss ^xnp ♦air. • » : oSb*its nopn rvn town* • uixj myi • Won Tnyn •t t v|v- tt : t»«: - : •".-;•.• nil : tbmv nin^D ♦ Ma d&i u&0 ' dw roxSo wi t t -t t ; • ; . - - T T . lT • - t v v ; » r . : dS^t pxa nxi • rrjur px-i na* iirntfttt • rrjripffl ^rp ntox rfaao rt*^ ^x-nri * nnsx Swm ^^ ^sn : ; - t ; t ; i • ; •• ••• — i : . . t; nS^3 *3 •-fflr % Sy »^«i 'W my dsx »a nxn : tb&rv on-in xS • nnx ^np nyi * nnn» nan^ n^^nn uSrr j d^*.; : dSbHh» nx •t t ; i ^y. 1 ? Ishmael also slew all the Jews that were with him, even with Gedaliah, at Mizpah, and the Chaldeans that were found there, and the men of war. And it came to pass the second day after he had slain Gedaliah, and no man knew it; that there came certain men from Shechem, from Shiloh, and from Samaria, even fourscore men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes rent, and having cut themselves, with offerings and incense in their hand, to bring them to the house of the Lord. And Ishmael the son of Nethaniah went forth from Mizpah to meet them, weeping all along as he went : and it came to pass, as he met them, he said unto them, Come to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam. And it was so, when they came into the midst of the city, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah slew them, and cast them into the midst of the pit, he, and the men that were with him. But ten men were found among them that said unto Ishmael, Slay us not : for we have treasures in the field, of wheat, and of barley, and of oil, and of honey : so he forbare, and slew them not among their brethren. Now the pit wherein Ishmael had cast all the dead bodies of the men whom he had slain because of Gedaliah, was that which Asa the king had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel : and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah filled it with them that were slain. Then Ishmael carried away captive all the residue of the people that were in Mizpah, even the king's daughters, and all the people that remained in Mizpah, whom Nebuzar-adan the captain of the guard had committed to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam: and Ishmael the son of Nethaniah carried them away captive, and departed to go over to the Ammonites. But when Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that ivere with him, heard of all the evil that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah had done, then they took all the men, and went to fight with Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and found him by the great waters that are in Gibeon. Now it came to pass, that when all the people which were with Ishmael saw Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the captains of the forces that were with him, then they were glad. So all the people that Ishmael had carried away captive from Mizpah cast about and returned, and went unto Jo- hanan the son of Kareah. And the Lord appeared in the tabernacle in a pillar of a cloud : and the pillar of the cloud stood over the door of the tabernacle. And the Lord said unto Moses, Behold, thou shalt sleep with thy fathers ; and this people will rise up, and go astray after the gods of the strangers of the land, whither they go to be among them, and will forsake me, and break my covenant which I have made with them. Then my anger shall be kindled against them in that day, and I will forsake them, and I will hide my face from them, and they shall be devoured, and many evils and troubles shall befall them ; so that they will say in that day, Are not these evils come upon us, because our God is not among us ? And I will surely hide my face in that day for all the evils which they shall have wrought, in that they are turned unto other gods. Now there- fore write ye this song for you, and teach it the children of Israel : put it in their mouths, that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. For when I shall have brought them into the land which I sware unto their fathers, that floweth with milk and honey; and they shall have eaten and filled themselves, and waxen fat; then will they turn unto other gods, and serve them, and provoke me, and break my covenant. And it shall come to pass, when many evils and troubles are befallen them, that this song shall testify against them as a witness ; for it shall not be forgotten out of the mouths of their seed : for I know their imagination which they go about, even now, before I have brought them into the land which I sware. Moses therefore wrote this song the same day, and taught it the children of Israel. And he gave Joshua the son of Nun a charge, and said, Be strong and of a good courage : for thou shalt bring the children of Israel into the land which I sware unto them : and I will be with thee. And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, that Mo- ses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying, Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck : behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord ; and how much more after my death ? Yet they tempted and provoked the most high God, and kept not his testimonies : but turned back, and dealt unfaithfully like their fathers : they were turned aside like a deceitful bow. For they provoked him to anger with their high places, and moved him to jealousy with their graven images. When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel ; so that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent where he was enthroned among men; and delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand. He gave his people over also unto the sword, and was wroth with his inheritance. The fire consumed their young men ; and their maidens were not com- mended. Their priests fell by the sword ; and their widows made no lamentation. Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine. And he smote his enemies in the hinder part : he put them to a perpetual reproach. Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim : but chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved. And he built his sanctuary like the eternal heights, like the earth which he hath established for ever. He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds : from following the ewes great with young, he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance. And he fed them according to the integrity of his heart ; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands. 'bNJJWI N7n 1VS O Zion ! wilt thou ever remain insensible to the welfare of thy children, the remnant of thy flock who fervently pray for thy peace ? From the east, from the west, from the north and the south ; yea, from far and near, thy children turn to thee, anxiously expecting the return of thy prosperity. Wilt thou not then accept the greeting of thy exiles, who pant for hope, and drop down their tears like the dew of Hermon. Would to God that they might be permitted to water thy deserted hills. When 1 brood over thy sorrows, I am the owl of the wilderness ; but when I dream of the restoration of thy greatness, I am a pleasant harp to thy sacred song. My heart clings to Bethel ; and unto God, the Omnipotent, it cries aloud. Oh ! how it weeps for the wounds which thy purity, O Zion, has received. Here abode the Presence Divine; here the bles- sings of the Guardian of Israel responded to the prayers that were addressed from thy gates. Here God was unto thee a glory and a light. Here the effulgence of the Supreme did eclipse the lustre of the sun and the stars. Fain would I pour out my soul on thy sainted hill, where the spirit of God descended upon his chosen ones. Then wast thou, O Zion, the residence of the Eternal King: but now, alas ! slaves pollute thy majestic throne. Oh ! that my spirit might be suffered to hover about the hallowed spot where the Deity appeared to thy prophets and seers ! Oh ! that I had wings to bear my wounded heart to thy ruins ! then would I cling to thy dumb rocks ; I would bow me down to the earth, and fondly cherish thy sacred dust. Jacob, and anger also came up against Israel ; because they believed not in God, and trusted not in his salvation : though he had com- manded the clouds from above, and opened the doors of heaven, and had rained down manna upon them to eat, and had given them of the corn of heaven. Man did eat angels' food : he sent them meat to the full. He caused an east wind to blow in the heaven : and by his power he brought in the south wind. He rained flesh also upon them as dust, and feathered fowls like as the sand of the sea : and he let it fall in the midst of their camp, round about their habitations. So they did eat, and were well filled : for he gave them their own desire ; they were not estranged from their lust. But while their meat ivas yet in their mouths, the wrath of God came upon them, and slew the fattest of them, and smote down the chosen men of Israel. For all this they sinned still, and believed not in his wondrous works. Therefore their days did he consume in vanity, and their years in trouble. When he was about to slay them, then they sought him : and they returned and enquired early after God. And they remembered that God was their Rock, and the high God their Redeemer. Nevertheless they did flatter him with their mouth, and they lied unto him with their tongues. For their heart was not right with him, neither were they stedfast in his covenant. But he, who is fullof compassion, forgave their iniquity, and destroyed them not : yea, many a time turned he his anger away, and did not stir up all his wrath. For he remembered that they were but flesh ; a wind that passeth away, and cometh not again. How oft did they provoke him in the wilderness, and grieve him in the desert ! Yea, they turned back and tempted God, and limited the Holy One of Israel. They remembered not his hand, nor the day when he delivered them from the enemy : how he had wrought his signs in Egypt, and his wonders in the field of Zoan : and had turned their rivers into blood ; and their floods, that they could not drink. He sent divers sorts of flies among them, which devoured them ; and frogs, which destroyed them. He gave also their increase unto the caterpillar, and their labour unto the locust. He destroyed their vines with hail, and their sycomore trees with frost. He gave up their cattle also to the hail, and their flocks to hot thunderbolts. He cast upon them the fierceness of his anger, wrath, and indig- nation, and trouble, by sending evil angels among them. He made a way to his anger ; he spared not their soul from death, but gave their life over to the pestilence ; and smote all the firstborn in Egypt ; the chief of their strength in the tabernacles of Ham ; but made his own people to go forth like sheep, and guided them in the wilderness like a flock. And he led them on safely, so that they feared not : but the sea overwhelmed their enemies. And he brought them to the border of his sanctuary, even to this mountain, which his right hand had purchased. He cast out the heathen also before them, and divided for them an inheritance by line, and made vol. v. r the ♦ DTitaa u^n *6 *a : byrto^ rby tfta$\ • apra njjrj : nna dw »n^t) • Sy»ft D'f?n# ix*i : inj^a inaa xSi on^x Dnjp : i^S jnj de^ti * bbxb jo est^.' itotiQ aru*i ♦ Dw'a Dnp yD» : yab>S onS nS^ nnn: * &*x Sax : c);| ^iy d^_ ^rpJi ♦ ik# isjja kt^ itgo!i : yb>n toya * Tiqp tyaK>?i ^xn : vrfaxtoS ran * mriti Y0 b&) eixi : Dn^a oSax niy * amxnft nrxS : cnS xa* Dnixm 1 - . . . And Zion said, Alas ! woe is me ; for my God hath cast me off, and exalted my spoilers ; my virgins are led into captivity, and my babes are dashed in pieces. O, where shall I find one who can record my sorrows ? Long have I been imprisoned in the dungeons of those who cast me forth, desolated my sanctuary, and broke my bars ; say, O my brethren, is there any sorrow like unto my sorrow ? Behold I have become an orphan, though my Father yet lives. O thou all-gracious God ! how long shall thine heritage be desolate, how long be forsaken, how long shall she be given up to the power of strangers ? Look down, O Almighty Father, upon her sufferings ; hearken unto her cry, and turn us again unto thee, O Lord, and we shall be turned. Psalm Ixxviii. PpN? "^DttfD Maschil of Asaph. — Give ear, O my people, to my law : incline your ears to the words of my mouth. I will open my mouth in a parable : I will utter dark sayings of old : which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the genera- tion to come the praises of the Lord, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children : that the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born ; who should arise and declare them to their children : that they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments ; and might not be as their fathers, a stubborn and rebellious gene- ration ; a generation that set not their heart aright, and whose spirit was not stedfast with God. The children of Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law ; and forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them. Marvellous things did he in the sight of their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan. He divided the sea, and caused them to pass through ; and he made the waters to stand as a heap. In the daytime also he led them with a cloud, and all the night with a light of fire. He clave the rocks in the wilderness, and gave them drink as out of 'the great depths. He brought streams also out of the rock, and caused waters to run down like rivers. And they sinned yet more against him by provoking the Most High in the wilderness. And they tempted God in their heart by asking meat for their lust. Yea, they spake against God : they said, Can God furnish a table in the wilderness ? Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed ; can he give bread also ? can he provide flesh for his people ? Therefore the Lord heard this and was wroth : so a fire was kindled against Jacob, nan ny&yn? nnw its nj&Kfil : ^npa aq; *6 rm i#s • TjSi^n n*a w&p\ whip tvtana • ^anip aag^L *3m? ntf *a * hht* h *y?« jvv n»5 n? : ♦ta pana^ hsn \n\ *z? • typiy «r^g ^aip d?n ^n * »nna ^nara «j^j 'Bhpo * *nnD nttipa prop ^x IB pan : *n *a$ nefov »:k • *bkj *jrrtjn *S«3©3 aiK3D -j!)B) n# ♦ n^Tjn. on? O deliver not the soul of thy turtledove unto the multitude of the zoicked : forget not the congregation of thy poor for ever. Have respect unto the covenant : for the dark places of the earth are full of the habitations of cruelty. O let not the oppressed return ashamed : let the poor and needy praise thy name. Arise, O God, plead thine own cause : remember how the foolish man reproacheth thee daily. Forget not the voice of thine enemies : the tumult of those that rise up against thee increaseth continually. Psalm Ixxvi. jTO'OJH TOJD 1 ? To the Chief Musician on Neginoth, a Psalm or Song of Asaph. — In Judah is God known : his name is great in Israel. In Salem also is his tabernacle, and his dwelling place in Zion. There brake he the arrows of the bow, the shield, and the sword, and the battle. Selah. Thou art more glorious and excellent than the mountains of prey. The stout-hearted are spoiled, they have slept their sleep : and none of the men of might have found their hands. At thy rebuke, O God of Jacob, both the chariot and horse are cast into a dead sleep. Thou even thou art to be feared : and who may stand in thy sight when once thou art angry ? Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven ; the earth feared, and was still : when God arose to judgment to deliver all the meek of the earth. Selah. Surely the wrath of man shall praise thee: the remainder of wrath shalt thou restrain. Vow, and pay unto the Lord your God: let all that are round about him bring presents unto him that ought to be feared. He shall cut off the spirit of princes : he is terrible to the kings of the earth. DTil !"tt "jN Lo ! this is the anniversary of the day on which my sin was visited ! Oh, mourn all ye who surround me, when you hear of this day. On this day my enemy prevailed, and like a lion rent me in pieces ; my purposes and the imaginations of my heart were frustrated. On the day of destruction came the spoiler and rooted me out ; with fire he laid waste my glorious temple, my kings and my princes fell beneath the sword of the stranger ; my very walls and ramparts did weep and languish together. Proudly did my foes exult when they destroyed my holy oracle, when they trampled me down and despoiled me of all my substance. Didst thou not mark their fierce vengeance, when they rent and ceased not, until Jacob was consumed and his dwelling laid waste ? Like bears did they tread down the gate, and lay prostrate the wall ; Zion, which was like the princess amongst the provinces, was made desolate, and her priests were cruelly slaughtered : the sword de- stroyed without, and terror reigned within. WJ3P TW 1M3 13 MORNING PORTION OF THE PROPHETS FOR THE NINTH DAY OF AJB. out of Zion, How are we spoiled ! we are greatly confounded, because we have forsaken the land, because our dwellings have cast us out. Yet hear the word of the Lord, O ye women, and let your ear receive the word of his mouth, and teach your daughters wailing, and every one her neighbour lamentation. For death is come up into our windows, and is entered into our palaces, to cut off the children from without, and the young men from the streets. Speak, Thus saith the Lord, Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman, and none shall gather them. Thus saith the Lord, Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might ; let not the rich man glory in his riches : but let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me, that I am the Lord who doth exercise lovingkindness, judgment, and righteousness, in the earth : for in these things I delight, saith the Lord. Remember thy congregation, which thou hast purchased of old ; the rod of thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemed ; this mount Zion, wherein thou hast dwelt. Lift up thy feet into the perpetual desolations ; even all that the enemy hath done wickedly in the sanctuary. Thine enemies roar in the midst of thy congregation ; they set up their ensigns for signs. A man was famous according as he had lifted up axes upon the thick trees. But now they break down the carved work thereof at once with axes and hammers. They have cast fire into thy sanctuary, they have defiled by casting down the dwelling place of thy name to the ground. They said in their hearts, Let us destroy them together: they have burned up all the assemblies of God in the land. We see not our signs : there is no more any prophet: neither is there among us any that knoweth how long. O God, how long shall the adversary reproach ? shall the enemy blaspheme thy name for ever ? Why withdrawest thou thy hand, even thy right hand ? Pluck it out of thy bosom. For God is my King of old, working salvation in the midst of the earth. Thou didst divide the sea by thy strength : thou didst break the heads of the sea monsters. Thou didst break the heads of leviathan in pieces, and didst give him to be meat to the people inhabiting the wilderness. Thou didst cleave the fountain and the flood : thou driedst up mighty rivers. The day is thine, the night also is thine : thou hast prepared the light and the sun. Thou hast set all the borders of the earth : thou hast made summer and winter. Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears* that I might weep day and night for the slain of the daughter of my people ! Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men ; that I might leave my people, and go from them ! for they are all adulterers, and an assembly of treacherous men. They bend their tongues like their bow for lies : but they are not valiant for the truth upon the earth ; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they know not me, saith the Lord. Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother : for every brother will utterly supplant, and every neighbour will walk with slanders. And they will deceive every one his neighbour, and will not speak the truth : they have taught their tongue to speak lies, and they weary themselves to commit iniquity. Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit ; through deceit they refuse to know me, saith the Lord. Therefore thus saith the Lord of Hosts, Behold, I will melt them, and try them ; for how shall I do for the daughter of my people ? Their tongue is as an arrow shot out ; it speaketh deceit : one speaketh peaceably to his neighbour with his mouth, but in heart he layeth his wait. Shall I not visit them for these things ? saith the Lord : shall not my soul be avenged on such a nation as this ? For the moun- tains will I take up a weeping and wailing, and for the habitations of the wilderness a lamentation, because they are burned up, so that none can pass through them ; neither can men hear the voice of the cattle ; both the fowl of the heavens and the beast are fled ; they are gone. And I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons ; and I will make the cities of Judah desolate, without an inhabitant. Who is the wise man, that may understand this ? and who is he to whom the mouth of the Lord hath spoken, that he may declare it, for what the land perisheth and is burned up like a wilderness, that none passeth through ? And the Lord saith, Because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, neither walked therein ; but have walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them. Therefore thus saith the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood, and give them water of gall to drink. 1 will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known : and I will send a sword after them, till I have con- sumed them. Thus saith the Lord of hosts, Consider ye, and call for the mourning women, that they may come ; and send for cunning women, that they may come: and let them make haste, and take up a wailing for us, that our eves may run down with tears, and our eyelids gush out with waters. As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fiuttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her pinions : So the Lord alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him. He made him ride on the high places of the earth, that he might eat the increase of the fields; and he made him to suck honey out of the rock, and oil out of the flinty rock ; Butter of kine, and milk of sheep, with fat of lambs, and rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, with the fat of kidneys of wheat ; and thou didst drink the pure blood of the grape. But Jeshurun waxed fat, and kicked: thou art waxen fat, thou art grown thick, thou art covered toith fatness ; then he forsook God which made him, and lightly esteemed the Rock of his salvation- They provoked him to jealousy with strange gods, with abomina- tions provoked they him to anger. They sacrificed to demons, to false gods: to deities whom they knew not, to new gods that came up of late, whom your fathers feared not. Of the Rock that begat thee thou art unmindful, and hast for- gotten God that formed thee. And when the Lord saw it, he abhorred them, because of the provoking of his sons, and of his daughters. And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what their end shall be : for they are a very froward generation, children in whom is no faith. They have moved me to jealousy with that which is not God ; they have provoked me to anger with their vanities: and I will move them to jealousy with those which are not a people ; I will provoke them to anger with a foolish nation. For a fire is kindled in mine anger, and shall burn unto the lowest hell, and shall consume the earth with her increase, and set on fire the foundations of the mountains. I will heap mischiefs upon them; I will spend mine arrows upon them. They shall be burnt with hunger, and devoured with burning heat, and with bitter destruction: I will also send the teeth of beasts upon them, with the poison of serpents of the dust. The sword without, and terror within, shall destroy both the young man and the virgin, the suckling also with the man of gray hairs. The hands of the pitiful women have sodden their own children : they were their meat in the destruction of the daughter of my people. The Lord hath accomplished his fury ; he hath poured out his fierce anger, and hath kindled a fire in Zion, and it hath devoured the foundations thereof. The kings of the earth, and all the inhabitants of the world, would not have believed that the adversary and the enemy should enter into the gates of Jeru- salem. For the sins of her prophets, and the iniquities of her priests, that have shed the blood of the just in the midst of her, they have wan- dered as blind men in the streets, they have polluted themselves with blood, so that men could not touch their garments. They cried unto them, Depart ye ; it is unclean ; depart, depart, touch not : when they fled away and wandered, they said among the heathen, They shall no more sojourn there. The anger of the Lord hath divided them ; he will no more regard them : they respected not the persons of the priests, they pitied not the elders. As for us our eyes as yet have failed for our vain help : in our watching we have watched for a nation that could not save us. They hunt our steps that we cannot go in our streets: our end is near, our days are fulfilled ; for our end is come. Our persecutors are swifter than the eagles of the heaven : they pursued us upon the mountains, they laid wait for us in the wilderness. The breath of our nostrils, the anointed of the Lord, was taken in their pits, of whom we said, Under his shadow we shall live among the heathen. Rejoice and be glad, O daughter of Edom, that dwellest in the land of Uz ; the cup also shall pass through unto thee : thou shalt be drunken, and shalt make thyself bare. The punishment of thine iniquity is accomplished, O daughter of Zion ; he will no more carry thee away into captivity : he will visit thine iniquity, O daughter of Edom ; he will discover thy sins. Thou hast made us as the offscouring and refuse in the midst of the people. All our enemies have opened their mouths against us. Fear and a snare is come upon us, desolation and destruction. Mine eye runneth down with rivers of water for the destruction of the daughter of my people. Mine eye trickleth down, and ceaseth not, without any intermission, till the Lord look down and behold from heaven. Mine eye affecteth mine heart because of all the daughters of my city. Mine enemies chased me sore, like a bird, without cause. They have cut oft' my life in the dungeon, and cast a stone upon me. Waters flowed over my head ; then I said, I am cut off. I called upon thy name, O Lord, out of the low dungeon. Thou hast heard my voice : close not thine ear to my breathing, to my cry. Thou drewest near in the day that I called upon thee : thou saidst, Fear not. O Lord, thou hast pleaded the causes of my soul ; thou hast redeemed my life. O Lord, thou hast seen my wrong : judge thou my cause. Thou hast seen all their vengeance and all their imaginations against me. Thou hast heard their reproach, O Lord, and all their imaginations against me ; the lips of those that rose up against me, and their device against me all the day. The precious sons of Zion, comparable to fine gold, how are they esteemed as earthen pitchers, the work of the hands of the potter ! Even the sea-monsters draw out the breast, they give suck to their young ones : but the daughter of my people is become cruel, like the ostriches in the wilderness. The tongue of the suck- ing child cleaveth to the roof of its mouth for thirst: the young children ask bread, and no man dealeth it out unto them. They that did feed delicately are desolate in the streets: they that were brought up in scarlet embrace dunghills. For the punishment of the iniquity of the daughter of my people is greater than the pu- nishment of the sin of Sodom that was overthrown as in a moment, and no hands stayed on her. Her Nazarites were purer than snow, they were whiter than milk, they were more ruddy in body than rubies, their polishing was of sapphire. Their visage is blacker than a coal ; they are not known in the streets ; their skin cleaveth to their bones; it is withered, it is become like a stick. They that are slain with the sword are better than they that be slain with hunger: for ta-^K d^-^k «3J^ kbo : riinpy nyraty rnprui wrn *riD : rtari -vinya "A pjn nnbD : rtan kS ri;nn wmim t • , ;•• I r I r r *• t t ; jt t t ; - t "II*" ins : w^fc-Sj tin's wSjj ws : D*E®n a'jjji tiD*fc>ri dikdi -u^-by \ry mn o^jfa : nawn mm uh rrn nnsi "- • *' -- ...... Behold, O Lord, and consider to whom thou hast done this. Shall the women eat their fruit, infants of a span long? Shall the priest and the prophet be slain in the sanctuary of the Lord? The young and the old lie on the ground in the streets: my virgins and my young men are fallen by the sword ; thou hast slain them in the day of thine anger ; thou hast killed, and not pitied. Thou hast called as in a solemn day my terrors round about, so that in the day of the Lord's anger none escaped nor remained: those that I have swaddled and brought up hath mine enemy consumed. Chapter iii. 1iyr\ "ON I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath. He hath led me, and brought me into darkness, but not into light. Surely against me is he turned; he turned his hand against me all the day. My flesh and my skin hath he made old, he hath broken my bones. He hath builded against me, and compassed me with gall and travail. He hath set me in dark places as they t/tat be dead of old. He hath hedged me about, that I cannot get out: he hath made my chain heavy. Also when I cry and shout, he shutteth out my prayer. He hath enclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked. He was unto me as a bear lying in wait, and as a lion in secret places. He hath turned aside my ways, and pulled me in pieces: he hath made me desolate. He hath bent his bow, and set me as a mark for the arrow. He hath caused the arrows of his quiver to enter into my reins. I have become a derision to all my people ; and their song all the day. He hath filled me with bitterness, he hath made me drunken with wormwood. He hath also broken my teeth with gravel stones : he hath covered me with ashes. And thou hast removed my soul far off from peace : I have forgotten prosperity. And I said, My strength and my hope is perished from the Lord : remembering mine affliction and my misery, the wormwood and the gall. My soul hath them still in remembrance, and is humbled in me. This I recall to my mind, therefore I have hope. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are renewed every morning: great is thy faithfulness. • The Lord is my portion, saith my soul; therefore will I hope in him. The Lord is good to them that wait for him, to the soul that seeketh him. It is good that a man should both hope and quietly wait for the salvation of the Lord. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth. He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him. He putteth his mouth in the dust ; peradventure there may be hope. He giveth his cheek to him that smiteth him : he is filled full with reproach. For the Lord will not cast off for ever : but though he cause grief, yet will he have com- passion according to the multitude of his mercies. For he doth not afflict willingly, nor grieve the children of men. To crush under his feet all the prisoners of the earth ; to turn aside the right of a man before the eyes of the most High; to subvert a man in his cause, the Lord approveth not. Who is he that saith, and it cometh to pass, when the Lord com- mandeth it not ? Out of the mouth of the most High proceed not evil and good? Wherefore doth a living man complain, a man for the punishment of his sins ? Let us search and try our ways, and turn ♦jto uhptiz ;m*-DK D^nstD ^Sy ens dw n^SKrrDN • ria t -. -|. . . .. T .. The Lord was as an enemy : he hath swallowed up Israel, he hath swallowed up all her palaces : he hath destroyed his strong holds, and hath increased in the daughter of Judah mourning and lament- ation. He hath violently taken away his tabernacle, as if it were a garden : he hath destroyed his assembly : the Lord hath caused the solemn feasts and sabbaths to be forgotten in Zion, and hath despised in the indignation of his anger the king and the priest. The Lord hath cast off his altar, he hath abhorred his sanc- tuary, he hath given up into the hand of her enemy the walls of her palaces; they have made a noise in the house of the Lord, as in the day of a joyous feast. The Lord hath purposed to destroy the wall of the daughter of Zion : he hath stretched out a line, he hath not turned back his hand from destroying : therefore he made the rampart and the wall to lament and to languish together. Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles : the law is no more ; her prophets also find no vision from the Lord. The elders of the daughter of Zion sit upon the ground in mournful silence: they have cast up dust upon their heads ; they have girded themselves with sackcloth : the virgins of Jerusalem hang down their heads to the ground. Mine eyes do fail with tears, my bowels are troubled, my liver is poured out upon the earth, for the destruction of the daughter of my people; because the babes and the sucklings swoon in the streets of the city. They said to their mothers, Where iscorn and wine? when they swooned as the wounded in the streets of the city, when their soul was poured out upon their mothers' bosom. What thing shall I take to witness for thee? what thing shall I compare to thee, O daughter of Jerusalem? what shall I equal to thee, that I may comfort thee, O virgin daughter of Zion? for thy breach is great like the sea: who can heal thee ? Thy prophets have seen vain and foolish things for thee: and they have not discovered thine iniquity, to turn away thy captivity; but have seen for thee false burdens and causes of banishment. All that pass by clap their hands at thee ; they hiss and wag their head at the daughter of Jerusalem, saying, Is this the city that men call The perfection of beauty, The joy of the whole earth ? All thine enemies have opened their mouth against thee: they hiss and gnash the teeth: they say, We have swallowed her up: certainly this is the day that we looked for ; we have found, we have seen it. The Lord hath done that which he had devised ; he hath fulfilled his word that he had commanded in the days of old: he hath thrown down, and hath not pitied: and he hath caused the enemy to rejoice over thee, he hath set up the horn of thine adversaries. Their heart cried unto the Lord, O wall of the daughter of Zion, let tears run down like a river day and night: give thyself no rest; let not the apple of thine eye cease. Arise, cry out in the night : in the be- ginning of the watches pour out thine heart like water before the face of the Lord: lift up thy hands toward him for the life of thy young children, that faint for hunger in the top of every street, vol v. c Behold, axn rrg&rh rvyy n ^T! jfei tf»3 ' *)^ r.33 : in»n ^n| ^ fiTTO Sn^ri n*j«8 rryinj-roa n^ji • vnxab jw rptftowSj y*p3 *i#ti |i»x| ' rrtn'. rD# • rigb rw i3fc> [& Dbnn : n$tt i&rrpD *i&u in^TD tfro ro? : jrpi "tjSd iaK-Djn? p*yi n|Bh DV| nirrnria uija Sip * jroitaFW nfain Tix-Ta T5pn iT y#n& ip ntpj |i»yra n&in n wnb rnrr im : -ijnfi ?J*38? All her people sigh, they seek bread; they have given their pleasant things for meat to sustain life : see, O Lord, and consider; for I am become vile. Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by ? Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is done unto me, where- with the Lord hath afflicted me in the day of his fierce anger. From above hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them : he hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back : he hath made me desolate and faint all day. The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand : they are wreathed, and come up upon my neck : he hath made my strength to fall, the Lord hath delivered me into their hands, from tohom I am not able to rise up. The Lord hath trodden under foot all my mighty men in the midst of me : he hath called an assembly against me to crush my young men : the Lord hath trodden the virgin, the daughter of Judah, as in a winepress. For these things I weep; mine eye, mine eye runneth down with water, because the comforter that should relieve my soul is far from me : my children are desolate, because the enemy has prevailed. Zion spreadeth forth her hands, but there is none to comfort her: the Lord hath commanded concerning Jacob, that his adversaries should be round about him : Jerusalem is as a menstruous woman among them. The Lord is righteous ; for I have rebelled against his command- ment: hear, I pray you, all people, and behold my sorrow; my virgins and my young men are gone into captivity. 1 called for my lovers, but they deceived me : my priests and mine elders expired in the city, while they were seeking food in order to support life. Behold, O Lord ; for I am in distress : my bowels are troubled; my heart is turned within me; for I have grievously rebelled : abroad the sword bereaveth, at home there is as death. They have heard that I sigh: there is none to comfort me: all mine enemies have heard of my trouble ; they are glad that thou hast done it : thou wilt bring the day that thou hast called, and they shall be like unto me. Let all their wickedness come before thee ; and do unto them, as thou hast done unto me for all my transgres- sions : for my sighs are many, and my heart is faint. Chap. ii. ny& How hath the Lord covered the daughter of Zion with a cloud in his anger, how hath he cast down from heaven unto the earth the beauty of Israel, and hath not remembered his footstool in the day of his anger ! The Lord hath swallowed up all the habitations of Jacob, and hath not pitied : he hath thrown down in his wrath the strong holds of the daughter of Judah ; he hath brought them down to the ground : he hath polluted the kingdom and the princes thereof. He hath cut off in his fierce anger all the horn of Israel: he hath drawn back his right hand from before the enemy, and he hath burned against Jacob like a flaming fire, which devoureth round about. Psalm cxxxvii. mini 7V By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down, yea, we wept, when we remembered Zion. We hanged our harps upon the willows in the midst thereof. For there they that carried us away captive required of us a song ; and they that wasted us required of us mirth, saying, Sing for us one of the songs of Zion. How shall we sing the Lord's song in a strange land? If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, let my right hand forget her cunning. If I do not remember thee, let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth ; if I prefer not Jeru- salem above my chief joy. Remember, O Lord, the children of Edom in the day of Jerusalem ; who said, Raze it, raze it, even to the foundation thereof. O daughter of Babylon, who art to be de- stroyed ; happy shall he be, that rewardeth thee as thou hast served us. Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones. Then say the ordinary Evening Service, from cnm Kirn Vol. I, p. 36, till the end of the "Amidah" p. 42. THE BOOK OF LAMENTATIONS. Chap. i. nyil How doth the city sit solitary, that was full of people ! how is she become as a widow ! she that teas great among the nations, and princess among the provinces, how is she become tributary ! She weepeth sore in the night, and her tears are on her cheeks ; among all her lovers she hath none to comfort her : all her friends have dealt treacherously with her, they are become her enemies. Judah is gone into captivity because of affliction, and because of great servitude : she dwelleth among the heathen, she findeth no rest : all her persecutors overtook her between the straits. The ways of Zion do mourn, because none come to the appointed feasts : all her gates are desolate : her priests sigh, her virgins are afflicted, and she is in bitterness. Her adversaries are the chief, her enemies prosper ; for the Lord hath afflicted her for the multitude of her transgressions : her children are gone into captivity before the enemy. And from the daughter of Zion all her beauty is departed : her princes are become like harts that find no pasture, and they are gone without strength before the pursuer. Jerusalem remembered in the days of her affliction and of her miseries all her pleasant things that she had in the days of old, when her people fell into the hands of the enemy, and none did help her : the adversaries saw her, and did mock at her sabbaths. Jerusalem must have grievously sinned, to have become thus rejected : all that honoured her despise her, because they have seen her nakedness : yea, she sigheth, and turneth backward. Her uncleanness was in her skirts; she remem- bered not her last end ; therefore she came down wonderfully : she had no comforter. O Lord, behold my affliction : for the enemy hath magnified himself. The adversary hath spread out his hand upon all her pleasant things : for she hath seen that the heathen entered into her sanctuary, whom thou didst command that they should not enter axa r\ywrb ivany 3 -hs. : nnrna wnata * waa-oa aaB* de> Sas i nhnr-Sy I I • *• I T : • T - ; - T T V T -;- '- waW wb*& i db> *a j wni-naa « ,l ?n • rtaina c^any t»^j y^ : P*v 1*$? w 1 ? n»# ■ n nab w^Tirn Ttf-*m : »y# nagto zbmy ijna#>rt»jt : 153 nona Sy • jrrBhiK ♦ D^n;-n« ntyx x^-nx 'aian* nS-dx ^rb ' *aie^? pa^n Dn£kn d^tt dv nx dhn* ^aS ■ « na? j *nnjpB> Bfci Sy •^-dW?b> nBta mneri ^aa _ na \ na TiD^n ny_ *njrny : a'o rn'op >vd -iy vS ep 'k pbn Dim xim p bina iraa rva-i]/ n'rsn iimni Dnaa Tian • nj&Sxa nrvn oy *nan Tyrr -na nacr ' na»N - • T - T T ; - ; T ;|T *T • T - ^- T T T T ; | T T " rimm nS^a naan iaa : wh nivn nun&a ttib> t*r ; •; T . — - *■' ; • t -r t ; | t " ; — • t t nS vn na ma rrp-Sa • n'anx-SaD Droo nS-rx rrnS W T T T ; T T ^V *• T TV - ; T • ** ~ I T | " T V; V ^- nxra kS d^-q natr wr\ may antfl >fyb mw nrta : MfcS t ; | T • t : it ■ t *•; ...»■..
