O Lord our God, and the God of our fathers, to accustom us to thy law, and to attach us to thy precepts. Suffer us not to be led into the power of sin, trans- gression, temptation or contempt ; but remove us far from evil imagination, from evil occurrences, from the enmity of mankind, from evil diseases, and from unnatural death ! Cause ais to adhere to what is good, and grant unto us this day, and every day, grace, favour and mercy, in thy sight, and in the sight of all who behold us, and bestow gracious favours upon us. Blessed art thou, O Lord ! who bestowest gracious favours upon thy people Israel. Thou wast One before thou didst create the world, and One didst thou remain after thou hadst created the world : thou art God in this world, and thou art God in the world to come ; "thou art immutable; thy years have no end." Thou hast made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them : and who among all the works of thy hands, whether above or below, can say unto thee, What doest thou ? or. What workest thou ? Our Father who art in heaven, deal charitably and graciously with us, for the sake of thy great, mighty and awful mame by which we are called ; and confirm unto us, O Lord our God ! the word of which thou hast assured us : " At that time I will bring you back ; and at that time I will gather you : I will appoint you for a name and a praise among all the people of the earth : when 1 bring back your captivity before your eyes, saith the Lord." Thine, O Lord, is the kingdom, and thou art exalted Supreme above all. Riches and honour proceed from thee, and thou hast dominion over all : and in thy hand is power and might ; and in thine hand is it to make great, and to give strength unto all. And now, O our God, we thank thee, and praise thy glorious name." " And the people shall bless thy honoured name, for thou art exalted above all blessing and praise. Thou art Lord alone ; thou hast made the heaven, the heaven of heavens, with all their host, the earth and all that is therein ; the seas and all that is therein ; and thou preservest them all ; and the host of heaven worshippeth thee." Praised for ever be thy name, O our King ! thou great, holy and sovereign God, in heaven and earth ; for unto thy great and holy name, or Lord, our God, and the God of our ances- tors, appertain for evermore, song and praise, hymn and psalm, strength and dominion, victory, greatness and power, adoration and glory, holiness and majesty, blessings and thanksgivings. Blessed art thou O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who formest the light, and Greatest darkness, makest peace, and createst all things. Thou enlightenest with mercy the whole earth, and those who dwell thereon ; and in thy good- ness thou renewest from day to day the work of the creation. How great are thy works, O Lord ! in wisdom hast thou made them all ; the earth is full of thy possessions. Thou art the only King, extolled, praised, glorified and exalted ever since the creation. Everlasting God ! in the abundance of thy mercy have compassion upon us. O Lord of our strength, Rock of our fortress, Shield of our salvation, who art our defence ! Be thou blessed, O Lord our God ! in the heavens above, and on the earth beneath, for all the admirable works of thy hands, and for the bright luminaries which thou has formed. Blessed art thou, O Lord, the Creator of the luminaries. With everlasting love thou hast loved us, O Lord our God ! and with exceeding great mercy hast thou compassionated us. O our Father, our King ! for the sake of thy great name, and for the sake of our fathers who trusted in thee, and whom thou didst teach the statutes of life, that they might perform thy will with a perfect heart, be also gracious unto us. O our Father, merciful Parent, have mercy upon us, and endue us with intelligence, that we may understand, obey, learn, con- sider, observe and accomplish with affection all the words of thy law ! Enlighten our eyes in thy law. and attach our hearts unto thy precepts : unite also our hearts to love and revere thy name, that we be not confounded nor put to shame, and that we may never stumble : for we trust in thy holy, great, mighty and awful name ! Hasten and bring us blessing and peace from the four corners of the earth, and lead us securely to our land ; for thou art the God who workest salvation. Thou hast made choice of us in preference to every people and language and in love, O our King, thou hast brought us near unto thy great name, to praise thee, to proclaim thy unity, and to love thy name ! Blessed art thou, O Lord, who in affection hast chosen thy people Israel! Hear, O Israel ! the Lord our God, the Lord is One." (Blessed be the name of the glory of his Kingdom for ever and ever !) ' And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might. And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thy heart. And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt speak of them when thou sittest in thy house, and when thou walkest by the way; when thou liest down, and when thou risest up. And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand ; and they shall be as frontlets between thine eyes. And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates " " O Lord ! open thou my lips, that my mouth may declare thy praise." Blessed art thou, O Lord our God, and the God of our fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob : the great, mighty and awful God ; Most High God, who bestowest gracious favours, and possessest all things ; who rememberest the piety of the patriarchs, and who in love wilt send a Redeemer to their posterity, for the sake of thy name. Who is like unto thee, O Lord of mighty acts ? Or who can be compared unto thee, O King, who orderest death, and restorest to life, and causest salvation to spring forth ? Thou art also faithful to revive the dead. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who revivest the dead ! " And thou art holy, O thou who abidest amidst the praises of Israel !" Blessed art thou, O Lord, who art the support and confidence of the just ! 1O Hear our voice, O Lord our God ! most gracious Father, have compassion and mercy upon us, and accept our prayers with mercy and favour ; for thou art God, who hearkenest to prayers and supplications ! Dismiss us not empty from thy presence, O our King ! for thou hearest the prayers of every heart. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who hearkenest unto prayer ! We gratefully acknowledge that thou art the Lord our God and the God of our fathers for evermore. Thou art our Rock ; the Rock of our life, and the Shield of our salvation throughout all ages. We will render thanks unto thee, and declare thy praise ; for our lives, which are at the disposal of thy hand, and for our souls, which are committed to thy care ; and for thy marvellous providence, which we daily experience ! and for thy wonders and thy kindness, which are at all times exercised towards us, at morn, noon and even. Thou alone art good, for thy mercies never fail ; thou alone art merciful, for thy benevolence never ceases; for evermore have we put our trust in thee. And for all thy mercies, may thy name, O our King, be praised and highly exalted for ever and ever. All that live shall give thanks unto thee, and shall ever truly praise thy great name, O God of our salvation and our help. Blessed art thou, O Lord ! Goodness is thy name, and unto thee it is fitting to give thanks. Grant peace, happiness and blessing, life, grace, favour, charity and mercy unto us, and unto all people ; and bless us, even all of us together, O our Father, with the light of thy countenance ! For by the light of thy countenance, hast thou given us, O Lord our God, the law and life, love and benevo- lence, righteousness and mercy, blessing and peace ; and may it please thee to bless thy people Israel with abundant fortitude and peace. Blessed art thou, O Lord, who blessest thy people with peace ! Amen. O God, guard our tongues from evil, and our lips from uttering deceit. Let our souls be silent towards those that curse us ; and grant that our souls be humble as the du^t to every one. Open thou our hearts to thy Law, that our souls pursue thy commandments. Frustrate speedily the devices, and destroy the machinations of all who rise up against us for evil. " May the words of our mouths, and the meditations of our hearts, be acceptable in thy presence, O Lord, our Rock and our Redeemer ! " May he who established! peace in his high heavens, grant peace unto us and unto all men ! Amen. II O merciful God, Searcher of secret thoughts, who hast aroused in the recesses of the heart a soft still voice to make known unto man his right course, and to save him from the path of corruption. Thou hast graciously admonished us by this chastening voice, and hast not suffered the testimony of Thy awful presence to perish within us ; for, behold, our sins testify against us, and press on us like a heavy burden. To Thee, therefore, we raise our eyes, O Thou who dwellest in the heavens, and we penitently implore Thy compassion ; for Thon despisest not the affliction of contrite worshippers, nor turnest aside from the cry of those who knock at Thy gates, and come to pour out their supplications in the courts of Thy holiness. Thou removest sin and demandeth pious love ; and Thy hand is stretched forth to conduct homeward all erring children who long to repose in Thy shadow, and yearn for their portion of the Divine heritage. Let now Thy mercies be extended unto us, that we may retire from Thy presence in holiness and purity, and that we may not stumble again in the path of Thy judgments, as we stumbled in the days that are past. O Almighty God, we beseech Thee, sanctify our inclinations and purify our thoughts, so that we may keep Thy command- ments, through the observance of which man liveth. Teach us this day and every day to find favour and acceptance in Thy sight, and to conduct ourselves with truth, uprightness .and charity towards all men. O be gracious unto us when we pray for pardon, forgiveness, and remission of sin, and do Thou influence all those who fear Thee to proclaim this day " peace, peace to the far and to the near." Lift up the light of Thy countenance upon us and impress us with the words of Thy inspired seer, that we have all one Father, and that one God has created us ; and dispose Thy children from one end of the earth to the other to acknowledge how good and how pleasant it is to live in unity. Make manifest amongst us Thy righteousness which lookest down from the Heavens, .and enable us this day and every day to perform conscien- tiously the mutual duties of brotherhood, to supress enmity, to forgive injuries, and to promote the happiness and the well being of mankind. Thus may Thy pure words be realized in our mouths and in our hearts ; may they conduce to the atonement of sin, and to the establishment of righteousness ; and may they stand forth the signs of Thy covenant from age to ae. Amen. 12 f~\ LORD our God, we. hope that Thou wilt speedily make- manifest Thy glorious power, and that Thou wilt cause idolatry to be removed from the earth, and all idols to be utterly destroyed. Then shall the universe be established under Thy sole dominion, O Almighty Ruler ! All flesh shall invoke Thy name, all the wicked turn unto Thee, and all the inhabitants of the world know and acknowledge that unto Thee every knee must bend, aud every tongue swear. Before Thee, O Lord, our God, shall they kneel and fall 1 prostrate, and to Thy glorious name shall they acscribe honour : and all of them shall willingly submit to the yoke of Thy dominion and Thou wilt reign over them for ever and ever. For the kingdom is Thine, and to all eternity shalt Thou reign in glory ; as it is written, " The Lord shall reign, for ever and ever." Choir. PSALM 95. 1 An exhortation to praise God, 3 for his greatness, 6 and for his goodness, 8 and not to tempt him. r^\ COME, let us sing unto the LORD : let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. 2 Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms. 3 For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods. 4 In his hand are the deep places of the earth : the strength of the hills is his also. 5 The sea is his, and he made it : and his hands formed the dry land. 6 O come, let us worship and bow down : let us kneel before the LORD our maker. 7 For he is our God ; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice, 8 Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness : 9 "When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work. 10 Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways : 11 Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest. or PSALM 96. 1 An exhortation to praise God, 4 for his greatness, 8 for his kingdom, 11 for his general judgment. C\ SING unto the LORD a new song : sing unto the LORD, v - y all the earth. 2 Sing unto the LORD, bless his name ; shew forth his sal- vation from day to day. 15 3 Declare his glory among the heathen, his wonders among all people. 4 For the LORD is great, and greatly to be praised : he is to be feared above all gods. 5 For all the gods of the nations are idols : but the LORD made the heavens. 6 Honour and majesty aye before him : strength and beauty are in his sanctuary. 7 Give unto the LORD, O ye kindreds of the people, give unto the LORD glory and strength. 8 Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name : bring an offering, and come into his courts. 9 O worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness : fear before him, all the earth. 10 Say among the heathen that the LORD reigneth : the world also shall be established that it shall not be moved : he shall judge the people righteously. 11 Let -the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad ; let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof. 12 Let the field be joyful, and all that is therein; then shall all the trees of the wood rejoice 13 Before the LORD : for he cometh, for he cometh to judge the earth : he shall judge the world with righteousness, and the people with his truth. PSALM 97. 1 The majesty of God's kingdom. 1 The church rcjoiccth at God's judgments upon idolaters. 1U An exhortation to godliness and gladness. *1pHE LORD reigneth ; let the earth rejoice ; let the mul- titude of isles be glad thereof. 2 Clouds and darkness are round about him ; righteousness and judgment are the habitation of his throne. 3 A fire goeth before him, and burneth up his enemies round about. 4 His lightnings enlightened the world ; the earth saw, and trembled. 5 The hills melted like wax at the presence of the LORD, at the presence of the Lord of the whole earth. 6 The heavens declare his righteousness, and all the people see his glory. i6 7 Confounded be all they that serve graven images, that boast themselves of idols: worship him, all ye gods. 8 Zion heard, and was glad ; and the daughters of Judah rejoiced because of thy judgments, O LORD. 9 For thou, LORD, art high above all the earth : thou art exalted far above all gods. 10 Ye that love the LORD, hate evil : he preserveth the souls of his saints ; he delivereth them out of the hand of the wicked. 11 Light is sown for the righteous, and gladness for the upright in heart. 12 Rejoice in the LORD, ye righteous ; and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. of PSALM 98. 1 The psalmist exhorteth the Jews, 4 the Gentiles, 7 and all creatures to praise God. A Psalm. f~\ SING unto the LORD a new song ; for he hath done marvellous things : his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory. 2 The LORD hath made known his salvation : his righte- ousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen. 3 He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel : all the ends of the earth have seen the salva- tion of our God. 4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth : make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise. 5 Sing unto the LORD with the harp ; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm. 6 With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King. 7 Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof ; the world, and they that dwell therein. 8 Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together 9 Before the LORD ; for he cometh to judge the earth : with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity. 7 PSALM 99. 1 The prophet, titling forth the kingdom of God in Zion, 5 exhorteth all, by the example of forefathers, to worship God at his holy hill. I An exhortation to praise God cheerfully, 3 for hts greatness, 4 and for his povur. A Psalm of Praise. TV/TAKE a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands. '2 Serve the LORD with gladness : come before his presence with singing. 3 Know ye that the LORD he is God : it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves ; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise ; be thankful unto him, and bless his name. 5 For the LORD is good ; his mercy is everlasting ; and his truth endureth to all generations. i8 PSALM 103. 1 An exhortation to bless Gcd for his mercy, 15 and for the constancy thereof. A Psalm of David. "DLESS the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name. 2 Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits : 3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities ; who healeth all thy diseases ; 3 \Yho redeemeth thy life from destruction ; who crowneth thee with loving-kindness and tender mercies ; 5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things ; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle's. 6 The LORD executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed. 7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel. 8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy. 9 He will- not always chide : neither will he keep his anger for ever. 10. He hath not dealt with us after out sins ; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities. 11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, 50 great is his mercy toward them that fear him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. 13 Like as a father pitieth his children, 50 the LORD pitieth them that fear him. 14 For he knoweth our frame ; he remembereth that we are dust. 15 As for man, his days are as grass ; as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth. 16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone ; and the place thereof shall know it no more. 17 But the mercy of the LORD is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children's children ; 18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them. 19 The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens ; and his kingdom ruleth over all. 20 Bless the LORD, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word. 21 Bless ye the LORD, all ye his hosts ; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure. 22 Bless 'the LORD, all his works in all places of his dominion ; bless the LORD, O my soul. or PSALM 139. 1 David pnitseth Gcd for his allseeiiig providence., 17 and for his infinite' msrcies. 19 He deficth the wicked. 23 He prayeth fur sincerity. To the chief Musician, A Psalm of David. f~} LORD, thou hast searched me, and known me. 2 Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising,, thou understandeth my thought afar off. 3 Thou compasseth my path and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways. 4 For thtve is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, thou knowest it altogether. 5 Thou hast beset me behind and before, and laid thine hand upon me. 6 Suck knowledge is too wonderful for me ; it is high, I cannot attain unto it. 7 Whither shall I go from thy spirit ? or whither shall I flee from thy presence? 8 If I ascend up into heaven, thou art there ; if I make my bed in hell, behold thou art there. 9 // I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the- uttermost parts of the sea ; 10 Even there shall thy hand lead me, and thy right hand shall hold me. 11 If I say, Surely the darkness shall cover me ; even the night shall be light about me. 12 Yea, the darkness hideth not from thee ; but the night shineth as the day : the darkness and the light are both alike to thee. 13 For thou hast possessed my reins ; thou hast covered me in my mother's womb. 14 I will praise thee ; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made : marvellous are thy works ; and that my soul knoweth right well. 15 My substance was not hid from thee, when I was made in secret, ar.d curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth. 20 16 Thine eyes did set my substance, yet being unperfect ; and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance w T ere fashioned, when as yet there was none of them. 17 How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God ! how great is the sum of them. 18 // I should count them, they are more in number than the sand : when I awake, I am still with thee. 19 Surely thou wilt slay the wicked, O God : depart from me therefore, ye bloody men. 20 For they speak against thee wickedly, and thine enemies take thy name in vain. 21 Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate thee ? and am not I grieved with those that rise up against thee ? 22 I hate them with perfect hatred ; I count them mine enemies. 23 Search me O God, and know my heart : try me, and know my thoughts : 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting. PSALM 141. 1 David pro.) eth that his suit may be acceptable, 3 his conscience sincere, 7 and his life safe from snares. A Psalm of David. L< ORD, I cry unto thee : make haste unto me ; give ear unto my voice, when I cry unto thee. 2 Let my prayer be set forth before thee as incense ; and the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice. 3 Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth ; keep the door of my lips. 4 Incline not my heart to any evil thing, to practise wicked words with men that work iniquity : and let me not eat of their dainties. 5 Let the righteous smite me ; it shall be a kindness : and let him reprove me ; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head ; for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities. 6 When their judges are overthrown in stony places, they shall hear my words ; for they are sweet. 7 Our bones are scattered at the grave's mouth, as when one cutteth and cleaveth wood upon the earth. 21 8 But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord : in thee is my trust '; leave not my soul destitute. 9 Keep me from the snares which they have laid for me, and the gins of the workers of iniquity. 10 Let the wicked fall into their own nets, whilst that I withal escape. or PSALM 142. David sheweth that in his trouble all his comfort was in prayer unto God. Maschil of David ; A Prayer when he was in the Cave. T CRIED unto the LORD with my voice; with my voice unto the LORD did I make my supplication. 2 I poured out my complaint before him ; I shewed before him my trouble. 3 When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then thou knewest my path. In the way wherein I walked have they privily laid a snare for me. 4 1 looked on my right hand, and beheld, but there was no man that would know me : refuge failed me : no man cared for my soul. 5 I cried unto thee, O LORD : I said, Thou art my refuge and, my portion in the land of the living. 6 Attend unto my cry ; for I am brought very low : deliver me from my persecutors ; for they are stronger than I. 7 Bring my soul out of prison, that I may praise thy name :. the righteous shall compass me about ; for thou shalt deal bountifully with me. A Psalm of David. "LTEAR my prayer, O LORD, give ear to my supplications : in thy faithfulness answer me, and in thy righteousness. 2 And enter not into judgment with thy servant : for in thy sight shall no man living be justified. 3 For the enemy hath persecuted my soul ; he hath smitten my life down to the ground; he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead. 22 4 Therefore is my spirit overwhelmed within me ; my heart within me is desolate. 5 I remember the days of old ; I meditate on all thy works ; I muse on the works of thy hands. 6 I stretch forth my hands unto thee : my soul thirsteth -after thee, as a thirsty land. Selah. 7 Hear me speedily, O LORD : my spirit faileth : hide not thy face from me, lest I be like unto them that go down into the pit. 8 Cause me to hear thy loving-kindness in the morning ; for in thee do I trust ; cause me to know the way wherein I should walk ; for I lift up my soul unto thee. 9 Deliver me, O LORD, from mine enemies : I flee unto .thee to hide me. 10 Teach me to do thy will ; for thou art my God : thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. 11 Quicken me, O LORD, for thy name's sake : for thy righteousness' sake bring my soul out of trouble. 12 And of thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that afflict my soul : for I am thy servant. or PSALM 145. 1 David praiseth God for his fame, 8 for his goodness, 11 for his kingdom, 14 for his providence, 17 for his saving mercy.
