Heathcote, Bart., the Rev. E. Kell, the Rev. T. L. O. Davles, M.A., S. Shaw, Esq., and especially to Sir Wm. Cope, Bart., who, by his untiring efforts, has rendered so material an assistance In the getting up of this work. It is hoped that many gentlemen may be by it stirred up to greater research Into the History of " Our County," and may be sufficlendy inter- [ iv. ] ested in this study not only to make notes for a new and enlarged edition of this work, but also with a view to bring out a complete History of Hampshire, a work which is yet to be written, and which would be regarded with great interest, and, I may say, be sure of a hearty welcome and successful reception. The present work would have been delayed with the view of greater completeness, but sub- scribers have been anxious for its publication, and therefore it is sent forth as it is, pretending to be nothing more than the title indicates, " an attempt." Y., with the original Domesday book of the County, &c., by R. Warner, jun., of Sway, Hants. 5 vols, in 6. 4to. (1795) Warner states, in his "Literary Recollections," that this work is a most bare-faced piracy ; that he did not know of its publication till he received an anonymous letter, severely criticising what was supposed to be his work. He says that he then procured a copy, and on going through it was asto- nished to find that the compiler had incoi-porated into his " Collections" not only the Domesday Book but also nearly the whole of his "History of the Isle of Wight," "Clausentum," and topographical remarks on the south-western parts of Hampshire. But it seems incredible that respectable book- sellers, whose names are on the title-page (Rivington, Cadell, and others) should have lent themselves to so gross a literary fraud ; or that Warner's "Hampshire Domesday," published six years previously, should have been actually incorporated into the work, as the second volume, without Warner's know- ledge and consent. And it is not a little remarkable, as con- tradicting Warner's story, that he himself, in 1792, circulated " Proposals" which clearly indicate such a work as was subse- quently published under his name, almost the only difference being that he proposed to print it in 3 vols, folio. A copy of these "Proposals" is among Cough's collections in the Bodleian, and they are reprinted in Warner's " Clausentum."
