(32) TEMPERATURE OF NEW YORK AND CALIFORNIA COMPARED. THE statement below, copied from the Records, from the 1st to the 12th day of November, 1849, kept at San Francisco, California, and New York City, is interesting, showing, as it does, a comparison of Thermometers iu both cities. It will be observed that they differ but slightly ; and in some days there was but a fractional difference in the mean temperature, and on one occasion, November 7th, 57 degrees was the mean temperature of both places, and the average mean temperature of the twelve days varied only % of a degree. We are told, however, that in California the mercury frequently reaches the great height of 120, while here it seldom rises to 100. 1 San Francisco, California. New York City. 1849 7 A.M. 3 P.M. A PRIVATE letter r'rom Franconia, New Hampshire, dated June 10th, 1848, says : " There was a very severe frost here on the night of the 1st of June. On the morning of the 2d the thermometer indicated 28 degrees. Corn, beans, and all tender vegetables were cut down on the ground, and the earth was frozen to the depth of half an inch." A CONTRAST. THE temperature in this city for the first four days of June, 1848, was as follows : 6 3 6 - A.M. 12 M. P.M. P.M. First 53 65 67 66 Second ..... 56 70 73 72 Third 63 82 85 80 Fourth 71 82 82 78 FRANCONIA AND THE THERMOMETER. IT is stated that the thermometer at Franconia, which is situated near the head-waters of the Merrimack, in Grafton county, N. H., rose in the shade, on Saturday, the 10th July, 1848, to the astonishing height of one hundred and two degrees, which is several degrees above blood heat. This place is noted for extremes of heat and cold, the mercury at the iron works here having sunk a few years since as low as forty degrees below zero, at which it freezes, thus rendering a spirit thermometer necessary at this place, and occasioning the re- mark from Jack Downing, that " the weather would have been colder had the thermometer tube been longer." This makes the range, or difference of temperature here (102-J-40) 142 degrees, which is not very much less than the extreme range ever experienced by travellers. Belzoni, in his travels in Egypt, found the highest degree of heat in a cave, in summer, 125 degrees ; and Captain Parry, the arctic navi- gator, who voyaged as far as 82 degrees north latitude, and wintered at 74 degrees north latitude, tells us the lowest degree he experienced was 55 below zero, thus making the difference of the extreme limits trod by man, or the range for the globe (125-foo) 180 degrees. The range for this city is probably about 120, the highest for ten years past having been 99, and the lowest, we suppose, about 26 below zero. Hence New York is very properly said to have the summer of Rome and the winter of Copenhagen ; while at Honolulu, in the Sandwich Islands, the temperature seldom varies more than tea degrees from 70 to 80.
