Each bibliography in the new series covers a distinct subject area of biomedicine and is intended to fulfill a current awareness function. Citations are usually derived from searching a variety of online databases. NLM databases utilized include MEDLINE, AVLINE, BIOETHICSLINE, CANCERLIT, CATLINE, HEALTH, POPLINE, AND TOXLINE. The only criterion for the inclusion of a particular published work is its relevance to the topic being presented; the format, ownership, or location of the material are not considered. ''arte SJOGREN’S SYNDROME Sjogren’s syndrome is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by destruction and inflammation of the exocrine glands. The salivary and lachrymal glands are principally involved, giving rise to dry eyes and mouth, although other glands may be affected. The disease is most commonly seen as a slowly progressive development of diminished glandular secretion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or other autoimmune disease or the more rapid development of a severe oral and ocular dryness, often accompanied by episodic parotitis, in an otherwise well patient. Though sometimes described as the second most common autoimmune rheumatic disease, the exact prevalance of the disease is unknown. Some people have symptoms that are so mild that they do not seek medical advice; and there are others who complain of symptoms but in whom the disorder is not recognized and identified. This bibliography was prepared in support of the conference "The Many Faces of Sjogren’s Syndrome" held at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, on January 18-19, 1989. The conference was intended as a state-of-the-art review directed primarily toward practicing physicians, dentists, and other health professionals. The purpose was to communicate the latest understanding of several aspects of Sjogren’s syndrome, including its diverse clinical picture and its diagnosis and treatment. This bibliography focuses on three major areas: incidence and prevalence, clinical manifestations and diagnosis, and treatment and management. It consists primarily of journal articles published since January 1985. Specifically omitted were items dealing primarily with immunology and pathology, pure research, foreign language material, and letters. 5 Anks - 5 — ° a 19 %8 PURL ''SEARCH STRATEGY A variety of online databases are usually searched in preparing bibliographies in the CBM series. To assist you in updating or otherwise manipulating the material in this search, the strategy used for the NLM’s MEDLINE database is given below.
