RANSOM WARNER 1823-18^4_ rector of St. Andrew's, Simsbury and Bloomfield St. Peter's, Granby St. John's, East Windsor Connecticut Also additional records, \777 \77^, of Rev. ROGER VIETS Rector of St. Andrew's, Simsbury By Albert C. Bates, M. A. Librarian Connecticut Historical Society HARTFORD 1923 F )C4 W3 100 Copies Printed. No Ransom Warner was born May 6, 1796, in Waterbury, Conn., the first child of Obadiah and Polly (Welton) Warner of that town. He married Mary (Polly) daughter of Edmund Austin of Waterbury, January 5, 1823. She died March 21, 1828, aged twenty-eight years. He married as his second wife. May 28, 1830, Caroline daughter of Col. Isaac Phelps of Granby. She survived her husband for many years dying on Oct. 23, 1890, at the age of eighty-four years. Mr. Warner died June 18, 1856, and is buried in the cemetery of St. An- drew's parish, as are both of his wives. Mr. Warner was admitted a deacon in the Protestant Episcopal Church of Connecticut by Bishop Thomas Church Brownell at Christ Church, Middletown, on December 29, 1822; and by the same bishop and at the same church was admitted a priest on November 4, 1823. Very soon after his marriage in January 1823 he settled in Simsbury, Conn., and began to officiate in the parish of St. Andrew's, located in the eastern central part of that town, and in the parish of St. Peter's, located in the adjoining town of Granby. After his admission to the priesthood he continued as rector of these two parishes until about the beginning of the year 1832. He then removed to East Windsor, Conn., and became rector of the parish of St. John's, located in Ware- house Point, a village of that town. After four years service in Warehouse Point he returned to his former home in Sims- bury and resumed the rectorship of his former parishes of St. Andrew's and St. Peter's. There he remained and contirued to officiate until his death. "Todd house," to which he makes reference, was his residence while rector of St. Andrew's, and was so called from its having been built by Rev. Ambrose Todd, a previous rector. The church and glebe of St. Andrew's are located in a section which has long been known as Scotland, and the parish is often referred to as being in Scotland or spoken of as Scot- land parish. St. Andrew's parish has also been sometimes referred to, even in official documents, as being in Tariffville, which is a village in Simsbury about a mile distant from the church. That portion of Windsor which had previously been known as Wintonbury w^as incorporated in 1835 as a new town with the name of Bloomfield, In May 1843 the bounds of Bloomfield were enlarged so that it included the section of Simsbury known as Scotland with the church and glebe of St. Andrew's. Since that date the parish of St. Andrew's has been located in Bloomfield, Conn. Mr. Warner, as is frequently the case with ministers, made the entries which constitute his records in a rather sketchy manner, often noting down only the most essential facts and some of these by means of abbreviations, and with frequent duplication of entries. A few of the entries appear only on loose slips of paper. It was his evident intention to copy his records into more regular and permanent form, and this he did in part. In this final copying he sometimes omitted details appearing in previous entries which appar- ently did not seem to him essential in the permanent record. For these reasons, and because some of the abbreviations might not be readily understood by persons unfamiliar with the localities referred to, a verbatim copy of the records could not well be printed, and it has seemed necessary to edit them to some extent by collating the different entries of the same record and extending the abbreviations. The records continued in the possession of Mr. Warner's family after his death, and are now printed by the courteous permission of his daughter, Mrs. Alice Warner Gay of Hart- ford, Conn. Thirty years ago, when the records kept by Rev. Roger Viets were published by me, the record book was evidently imperfect. It was recently learned that leaves from this record book were on file at the Pension Bureau in Washing- ton, where they had been sent as evidence in a claim for a pension. A photostat copy of them was procured and their contents are printed herewith. They consist of what appears to have been the title leaf of the record book and the lower half of two leaves of records.
