Long Staple Upland Cotton Long ad cotton ranges from 1 1/8 inches to 1 1/4 inches or longer in length of staple. This cotton is produced principally in n s, Louisiana, South Carolina, Texas, and Califorr bu* b grown to some t in each of the major cotton-growing States* (Tables 1 and 2.) Staple cotton constituted slightly less than 5 per cent c: upland crop of the United States during the three years 1928 to 1930 but it constituted an import'. nt portion of the crop Mississippi and in several other States, and, quantitatively, upland starle cotton is the most important type of long staple cotton consumed :he United States. The estimated domestic production of long staple upland cotton declined from about 688, COO bales in 1928 to about 444,500 bales in 1930 (Table 3) but preliminary information indicates a much larger proc :. of long staple upland, as well as a much larger total pro- duction, in 1931 than in any of the three preceding years .8/ The quan- tity of long staple upland cotton carried over on July 31 was 491,900 in 1928, 302,900 bales in 1929, 423,500 bales in 1930, and 374,900 1331. The resulting tot r l suprly of this cotton declined from . =-00 bales in 1928-29 to 868,000 b°les in 1930-31 and increased to mor . . :,000 bales in 1931-32. Data comparable to the foregoing ?re not available for any year r tc :t the total production of cotton in those counties in Mir -.sas, Louisiana, and South Carolina, in which a large proportion of the upland long staple cotton was produced in 1928, 1929, may be signi: at. (Fig. 1 and Table 4.) Production in ae areas declined generally from 1913 to 1923, then increased rapid- for two ye^rs, and has fluctuated widely since 1925. Approximately 1,034,000 bales were ginned in these counties prior to January 16. 1932 red with about 784,000 bales during the entire season of 1930-31.
