^^^:^'.Ly^/s-/f&o v^ NUMBER OF LIVESTOCK SLAUGHTER PLANTS MARCH 1, I960 August I960 On March 1, I960 there were 3, 144 livestock slaughtering plants in the United States that were either under Federal inspection or were non-Federally inspected plants with an annual output of 300, 000 pounds, or more, live weight, according to the Crop Reporting Board. There were 3, 217 of these plants on March 1, 1955, and 3, 23 8 on May 1, 1950. Of the 3, 144 plants on March 1, i960, there were 530 or 17 percent under Federal inspection, compared with 455 or 14 percent on March 1, 1955. These plants slaughter animals under inspection conducted by the Meat Inspec- tion Division, Agricultural Research Service. Plants not under Federal inspection with an annual output of 300, 000 pounds or more live weight, totaled 2, 6l4, compared with 2, 762 in 1955. Of the 2, 6l4 plants, 902 were "large" non-inspected plants--those which slaughter over 2 million pounds live weight annually. These "large" plants made up 29 percent of the combined total for inspected plus "large" and "medium" non-inspected plants. In 1955 there were 952 "large" non-inspected plants, 30 percent of the total. The remaining 1, 712 plants were "medium" non-inspected plants--those which slaughter under 2 million pounds, but more than 300, 000 pounds live w^eight annually. These accounted for 54 percent of the combined total for inspected plus "large" and "nnedium" non-inspected plants. In 1955, there were 1, 810 or 56 percent in this group. In 1959, there were also about 6, 500 "snnall" non-inspected plants that slaughtered less than 300,000 pounds live weight annually. The commercial slaughter estinnates of the Crop Reporting Board include slaughter in Federally inspected plants and in "large", "medium", and "small" non-Federally inspected plants. Slaughter in the 3, 144 plants accounted for 99 percent of the total com- mercial slaughter (live weight) in 1959 and 98 percent in 1954. Slaughter in the 530 Federally inspected plants accounted for 81 percent of the total comnnercial slaughter in 1959 and 78 percent in 1954. Classification of Plants by Number Slaughtering Each Specie Federally inspected and " large" and " medium " non-ffederally inspected slaughtering plants operating on March 1 have been classified according to the species slaughtered during the previous year. To obtain the number of plants UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE Agricultural Marketing Service Crop Reporting Board MtAn 1-2-2 (60) Washington, D.C. slaughtering a given species, it is necessary to combine the plants slaughter- ing all three species and the number of plants in the various combinations slaughering that species. For example, to obtain the number of plants slaugher- ing cattle and calves, it is necessary to combine the plants slaughtering all three species with those slaughtering cattle, calves, and hogs; cattle and calves only; and cattle, calves and sheep and lambs. No separation has been made of plants slaughtering cattle, but not calves, or of plants slaughtering calves and not cattle. Of the 3, 144 establishments, 962 or 31 percent slaughtered all species in 1959--cattle and calves, sheep and lambs, and hogs. This combination tends to be more important in the Mountain and Pacific areas, where about two-thirds of the plants slaughtered all three species. Plants slaughtering only cattle and calves represented l6 percent of the total. This classification is more numerous in the North Atlantic and East North Central areas, where over one-fifth of the plants slaughtered this specie only. About 40 percent of the plants slaughtered cattle and calves, and hogs. This combination was most common in the United States, as well as in most areas. In the South Atlantic area 62 percent fell into this class and in the South Central area 6l percent. Plants slaughtering cattle and calves, and sheep and lambs make up about 8 percent of the total. The two areas leading in the percentage of plants slaughter- ing this combination are North Atlantic area at l6 and Pacific area at 13. Slightly more than 5 percent of the slaughtering plants in the United States slaughtered hogs only, compared with 4 percent in 1954. These plants tend to be more concentrated in the States bordering on or near the Eastern metropolitan centers. Only three plants in the United States slaughtered just hogs and sheep and lambs. All these were located in the East North Central area. Nine plants in the United States slaughtered only sheep and lambs. Of the 530 Federally inspected plants, 126 or 24 percent slaughtered all species--cattle and calves, sheep and lambs, and hogs. Plants slaughtering only cattle and calves totaled 185 or 35 percent. There were 93 establishments which slaughtered cattle and calves and hogs. Eighty-two plants slaughtered cattle and calves and sheep and lambs. There were 41 plants slaughtering only hogs. Of the 902 "large" non-Federally inspected, 333 or 37 percent slaughtered all three species. The 119 plants slaughtering only cattle and calves accounted for 13 percent of the total. Plants slaughtering cattle and calves and hogs totaled 306 or 34 percent of the group. Eighty-seven plants slaughtered cattle and calves and sheep and lambs. Plants slaughtering hogs only totaled 54. One plant slaughtered sheep and lambs cind hogs. Two plants slaughtered only sheep and lambs. Among the 1,712 "mediuni' non-Federally inspected plants, 503 or 29 per- cent slaughtered all species. Plants slaughtering only cattle and calves totaled 209 or 12 percent. Almost half of the "medium" plants--852-—slaughtered cattle and calves and hogs. Seventy-two plants slaughtered cattle and calves and sheep and lambs. There were 70 plants in this group that slaughtered hogs alone, and 6 that slaughtered only sheep and lambs in 1959. - 2 - Livestock slaughter by class o£ plant as percent of total commercial slaughter (live weight) for each specie 1954 and 1959 Specie Federally- inspected plants T954 : 1959 i iV54 "Large" and "medium" non-inspected plants "T^5T "Federally inspected plus "large" and "medium" non-Federally inspected plants 1954 1959 Cattle .
