Earth Observing System
The Earth Observing System (EOS) is an integral part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Earth Science Enterprise, a longterm global change research program designed to improve our understanding of the Earth's interrelated processes involving the atmosphere, oceans, land surfaces, and polar regions. Data derived from EOS instruments and other Earth science measurement systems are particularly useful in understanding the causes and processes of global climate change and the consequences of human activities.
The EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS) provides a structure for data management and user services for more than 600 current NASA Earth science data products and will handle future data from a series of EOS instruments spanning the next two decades. Within the EOSDIS framework, the Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs) are responsible for providing services to support the global change research community. Data products are available through the EOS Data Gateway (EDG) search and order system, and DAAC-specific ordering systems. Additional means of access will become available as the program evolves.
EOS Data Gateway Search and Order System
This search and order system provides a consistent view of data products held at the DAACs and other cooperating data centers, allowing users without specific knowledge of the data to search science data holdings, retrieve high-level descriptions of data sets and detailed descriptions of the data inventory, view thumbnail (browse) images, and place orders for data products. It is suitable for a wide range of Earth science data users—from users with limited computer resources interested in performing occasional simple searches for data, to the professional Earth science researcher in need of executing complex data queries on a regular basis. No password or special account is necessary. This free service is accessible via the Web at

Searching & Ordering
Search Types
A search is done by specifying geographic areas of interest along with either geophysical parameter, data set name, or sensor name. Other criteria such as temporal range may optionally be used. Three different search types provide increasingly detailed information about science data available through the system.
A directory search provides summary information about EOSDIS data sets to help the user determine which data products are appropriate. This search accesses the Global Change Master Directory (GCMD), a comprehensive directory of information about Earth science data, including broad coverage of the oceans, atmosphere, hydrosphere, solid Earth, biosphere, and human dimensions of global change. The GCMD can also be accessed directly at http://gcmd.nasa.gov.
A guide search provides detailed descriptions about data sets, data sources, instruments, projects, and data centers, and can include algorithm descriptions and calibration information.
An inventory search gives descriptions of specific observations or collections of observations of individually orderable data (called granules) that are available from a data center.
When the search results are returned, summary and detailed descriptions are provided. Sample browse images are also available for many data sets. A variety of media and formatting options are available depending on the data set. Most data from the DAACs are available free or at a nominal charge. Some data are restricted to registered researchers.
For assistance or more information on searching and ordering, contact the EOS Data Gateway Support Group or any of the DAACs.
